Our previous work on the Greek rhotic in several positions has shown that it is typically articulated with a single constriction of short duration and a vocoid. In this study, we examine the rhotic in a new position, i.e. domain-final singleton /r/ in three prosodic positions (utterance-final, phrase-final, phrase-medial). Analyses included articulatory examination of the place and degree of constriction of the rhotic, variability due to context, acoustic duration of the constriction and vocoid phases, F1, F2 formants of the nuclear vowel and the vocoid, and classification of the constriction and vocoid on the basis of acoustic and articulatory characteristics observed in their production. A single constriction was found in the majority of tokens followed by a vocoid in all prosodic positions, typically with longer duration than the constriction. The formant structure at the vocoid mid-point was more centralised than that of the nuclear vowel. Prosodic position affected several acoustic and articulatory parameters of the constriction and the vocoid. Results are discussed in relation to accounts of articulatory weakening vs. strengthening at the edges of different prosodic domains.

Age of onset of bilingualism (AoO) has been reported to predict the mastery and interdependence of the bilingual phonetic systems. This study measured the VOT duration of Greek and German voiced stops produced by monolingual and bilingual children. All participants were children between 8-12 years old. Our findings revealed bidirectional interference in simultaneous and early sequential bilingual data (AoO: 3 to 4 y.o.). Simultaneous bilinguals had distinct categories for voiced stops while sequential bilinguals showed stronger interference from Greek and a merged velar category. Our results suggest AoO and place of articulation effects on bilingual acquisition of voiced stops.

Hearing-impaired speech presents a number of characteristics deviating from normal, which concern both the segmental level, i.e. vowel and consonant errors, and the suprasegmental level, i.e. stress, intonation, resonance, voice quality etc. Errors on both levels can compromise speech intelligibility, that is, the ability of being understood. The current paper presents a qualitative analysis of the main segmental and suprasegmental errors observed in the speech of 10 Greek adult speakers with profound prelingual hearing impairment and of various intelligibility levels. This study examined the identification and production of English consonants by Greek learners of English. Consonant identification was examined in quiet and in two types of noise, a competing talker and an 8-speaker babble. Consonant production was assessed by having English listeners identify the English consonants produced by Greek speakers. Greek speakers achieved higher identification scores in quiet than in noise and the 8-speaker babble had a more detrimental effect in their scores than the competing speaker. Within the AM model of intonational phonology, nuclear rather than prenuclear pitch accents typically monopolize our interest as the purported pivots for meaning distinctions among utterances. This paper compares, through one production and two perception experiments, the prenuclear field in statements versus polar questions in Greek, which can be string identical, differing only in intonation. Systematic differences in the prenuclear pitch accents of these two utterance types were found in both their peak alignment and scaling. Moreover, identification and discrimination experiments showed that listeners were attuned to these differences. These results underline the importance of research on the phonetics and phonology of prenuclear pitch accents and their contribution to the meaning of utterances.

This paper discusses a new method for the combined teaching of vocabulary and pronunciation to learners of English as a Foreign Language (EFL). The paper attempts to explore the long-term effectiveness of in-service teacher training courses for E.F.L. teachers in the Greek educational context. The courses were organized and run by the department of English, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. Α qnestionnaire was designed and issued to teacher trainees some months following the completion of the courses. The questionnaire aimed to assess, among others, (a) teacher trainees' beliefs regarding the relevance of the knowledge acquired to their individual needs, (b) the extent to which they used the materials provided in the course, and (c) the usefulness of the subjects offered. The data are discussed in relation to strategies for optimizing teacher-training services and implications are drawn for the implementation of change in a broader educational context. The paper investigates durational variability in Vowel-Consonant-Vowel (VCV) sequences, due to factors such as the phonetic identity of the segments involved, the context and the speaker. The speech material consisted of Greek real words containing VCV sequences with V=/i,a/ and C=/p,t,s/. The influence of the three factors on the durations of Vowel 1 (VI), Vowel 2 (V2), Consonant (C), and of the total VCV sequences are examined. In addition, further analyses are report­ed for VOT and VTT (voice termination time, i.e., carryover voicing during the consonant). The results show significant influence of all three parameters on the durations examined. This study investigates two major factors that have been documented to affect the duration of segments. The influence of stress and utterance type on duration is examined for Vowel-Consonant-Vowel (VCV) sequences in Greek (V=i,a; C=p,t,s). In particular, the influence of these factors on the durations of VI, V2, C and VCV are examined. In addition, further analyses are reported for VOT and VTT (i.e., carryover voicing during the consonant). Statistical analyses are carried out with factorial ANOVAs on all the durations. The results show significant influence of both stress and utterance type on the durations examined. The technique of electropalatography (Reading EPG system) is used in this study to examine coarticulatory effects from vowels on consonants involving different degrees of articulatory constraint in their production. The relationship between random (i.e., token-to- token) variability, degree of articulatory constraint and coarticulatory propensity is investigated. The speech material consisted of real words containing Vowel-Consonant-Vowel (VCV) sequences with V = /i, a/ and C = /p, t, s/. The results confirmed an inverse relationship between coarticulatory propensity and articulatory constraint during the production of the consonant. Coarticulatory effects on the tongue dorsum were found to decrease in the order p>t>s, i.e., from the least to the most constrained gesture. Vowel-to-Vowel (ν-to-ν) coarticulatory effects in Vowel-Consonant-Vowel sequences (VCV) in Greek are examined using articulatory data. The data were recorded with the technique of electropalatography (Reading EPG system) which records lingual contact with the hard palate in continuous speech. The speech material consisted of real words embedded in short sentences containing selected VCV sequences (ν =i,a and C=p,s,t). Two stress conditions were examined: stress of V1 and V2, e.g. 'papa and pa'pa. The aim of the study was twofold: (i) to examine ν-to-ν coarticulatory behaνiour over consonants requiring different degree of lingual involvement in their production; (ii) to investigate the relationship between stress and coarticulatory effects. The paper presents the results of a preliminary study of lingual coarticulation in VtV sequences in Greek. Ιt is part of ongoing research examining both acoustic and articulatory aspects of coarticulation in selected phonetic enνironments in Greek. The influence of one segment on neighbouring ones in speech production is described as the phenomenon of coarticulation. The problem of distinguishing those aspects of coarticulation which are the result of physiologically inherent characteristics of the human speech apparatus from those aspects which are constrained by the phonological rules of a particular language has initiated considerable research in the field. The present study compares coarticulatory tendencies and tongue dynamics in Greek and English in an attempt to highlight possible similarities and differences in the coarticulatory effects evident in the two languages. Data for the experimental part of this study were collected with the technique of electropalatography which records lingual contact with the hard palate dynamically in continuous speech. Lingual stops /t, k/ were examined in Vowel-Consonant-Vowel (VCV) sequences in the vocalic environments of /i, a/. Lingual activity was quantified by a coarticulatory index A, first globally, over the tongue as a whole, and then in the two topologically distinct parts of the tongue, the tongue tip/blade and the tongue body.
