Background Upregulation of CXCL8 (C-X-C motif ligand 8) in tumor cells has been reported in several types of cancer, and it correlates with a poor prognosis. However, the role of CXCL8 in glioma progression remains unknown. Materials and methods In this study, we examined CXCL8 expression levels in human glioma cell lines and in sixteen human gliomas with different grades. The molecular role of CXCL8 in glioma cells was investigated using quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) assays, Western blotting, CCK-8 assays, EdU assays, colony formation assays, Transwell migration and invasion assays. Results We found that high expression levels of CXCL8 were positively associated with progression and poor prognosis in human glioma. Mechanistically, CXCL8 promoted the epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) in glioma cells by activating the JAK/STAT1/HIF-1α/Snail signaling pathway. Conclusion Taken together, our data provide a plausible mechanism for CXCL8-modulated glioma progression, which suggests that CXCL8 may represent a potential therapeutic target in the prevention and treatment of gliomas.

We present a cascade deep neural network to segment retinal vessels in volumetric optical coherence tomography (OCT). Two types of knowledge are infused into the network for confining the searching regions. (1) Histology. The retinal vessels locate between the inner limiting membrane and the inner nuclear layer of human retina. (2) Imaging. The red blood cells inside the vessels scatter the OCT probe light forward and form projection shadows on the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) layer, which is avascular thus perfect for localizing the retinal vessel in transverse plane. Qualitative and quantitative comparison results show that the proposed method outperforms the state-of-the-art deep learning and graph-based methods. This work demonstrates, instead of modifying the architectures of the deep networks, incorporating proper prior knowledge in the design of the image processing framework could be an efficient approach for handling such specific tasks.

The optic disc segmentation is an important step for retinal image-based disease diagnosis such as glaucoma. The inner limiting membrane (ILM) is the first boundary in the OCT, which can help to extract the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) through gradient edge information to locate the boundary of the optic disc. Thus, the ILM layer segmentation is of great importance for optic disc localization. In this paper, we build a new optic disc centered dataset from 20 volunteers and manually annotated the ILM boundary in each OCT scan as ground-truth. We also propose a channel attention based context encoder network modified from the CE-Net to segment the optic disc. It mainly contains three phases: the encoder module, the channel attention based context encoder module, and the decoder module. Finally, we demonstrate that our proposed method achieves state-of-the-art disc segmentation performance on our dataset mentioned above., Comment: This paper has been accepted by the miccai workshop (OMIA-6)

Monitor inlining is a program rewriting technique to enforce security policy to an untrusted program. The program is modified so that the code for monitoring and policy enforcement is inserted into appropriate points. The embedded code will monitor the action of the program and alter its behavior in case of policy violation (security), otherwise interfere with it as little as possible (conservativity and transparency). For sequential and multi threaded Java-like programs, inlining algorithms have been proposed, but for languages with different concurrency model, the problem remains to be solved. This master thesis is done in the context of the HATS (Highly Adaptable and Trustworthy Software) project. A framework for ConSpec policy enforcement for the Abstract Behavioral Specification (ABS) language is devised. ABS language is the central contribution of the HATS project, its concurrency model is based on Concurrent Object Groups, Asynchronous Method Calls and Futures. In the framework, an adapted version of ConSpec is used and implemented. The inliner is implemented in Java and is applied to the HATS case study trading system, and its correctness properties are discussed.
