We carry out a detailed study of dynamic multiscaling in the turbulent nonequilibrium, but statistically steady, state of the stochastically forced one-dimensional Burgers equation. We introduce the concept of interval collapse time, which we define as the time taken for a spatial interval, demarcated by a pair of Lagrangian tracers, to collapse at a shock. By calculating the dynamic scaling exponents of the moments of various orders of these interval collapse times, we show that (a) there is not one but an infinity of characteristic time scales and (b) the probability distribution function of the interval collapse times is non-Gaussian and has a power-law tail. Our study is based on (a) a theoretical framework that allows us to obtain dynamic-multiscaling exponents analytically, (b) extensive direct numerical simulations, and (c) a careful comparison of the results of (a) and (b). We discuss possible generalizations of our work to higher dimensions, for the stochastically forced Burgers equation, and to other compressible flows that exhibit turbulence with shocks.

We study the buckling of pressurized spherical shells by Monte Carlo simulations in which the detailed balance is explicitly broken -- thereby driving the shell active, out of thermal equilibrium. Such a shell typically has either higher (active) or lower (quiescent) fluctuations compared to one in thermal equilibrium depending on how the detailed balance is broken. We show that for the same set of elastic parameters, a shell that is not buckled in thermal equilibrium can be buckled if turned active. Similarly, a shell that is buckled in thermal equilibrium can unbuckle if turned quiescent. Based on this result, we suggest that it is possible to experimentally design microscopic elastic shells whose buckling can be optically controlled., 10 pages, 8 figures, 2 table

We use the short-time inference scheme (Manikandan, Gupta and Krishnamurthy, Phys. Rev. Lett. 124, 120603, 2020), obtained within the framework of stochastic thermodynamics, to infer a lower-bound to entropy generation rate from flickering data generated by Interference Reflection Microscopy of HeLA cells. We can clearly distinguish active cell membranes from their ATP depleted selves and even spatio-temporally resolve activity down to the scale of about one $\mu$m. We investigate spectral properties of buoyancy driven bubbly flows. Using high-resolution numerical simulations and phenomenology of homogeneous turbulence, we identify the relevant energy transfer mechanisms. We find: (a) At high enough Galilei number (ratio of the buoyancy to viscous forces) the kinetic energy spectrum shows the Kolmogorov scaling with a power law exponent $-5/3$ for the range of scales between the bubble diameter and the dissipation scale ($\eta$). (b) For scales smaller than $\eta$, the physics of pseudo-turbulence is recovered.

We study a single, freely--floating, inextensible, elastic filament in a linear shear flow: $\mathbf{U}_{0}(x,y) = \dot{\gamma} y \hat{x}$. In our model: the elastic energy depends only on bending; the rate-of-strain, $\dot{\gamma} = S \sin(\omega t)$ is a periodic function of time, $t$; and the interaction between the filament and the flow is approximated by a local isotropic drag force. Based on the shape of the filament we find five different dynamical phases: straight, buckled, periodic (with period two, period three, period four, etc), chaotic, and one with chaotic transients. In the chaotic phase, we show that the iterative map for the angle, which the end-to-end vector of the filament makes with the tangent its one end, has period three solutions; hence it is chaotic. Motivated by wind blowing over water, we use asymptotic methods to study the evolution of short wavelength interfacial waves driven by the combined action of these flows. We solve the Rayleigh equation for the stability of the shear flow, and construct a uniformly valid approximation for the perturbed streamfunction, or eigenfunction. We then expand the real part of the eigenvalue, the phase speed, in a power series of the inverse wavenumber and show that the imaginary part is exponentially small. We give expressions for the growth rates of the Miles (1957) and rippling (e.g., Young & Wolfe 2013) instabilities that are valid for an arbitrary shear flow. The accuracy of the results is demonstrated by a comparison with the exact solution of the eigenvalue problem in the case when both the wind and the current have an exponential profile.

We use direct numerical simulations to study homogeneous, and isotropic turbulent flows of dilute polymer solutions at high Reynolds and Deborah numbers. We find that for small wavenumbers $k$, the kinetic energy spectrum shows Kolmogorov--like behavior which crosses over at a larger $k$ to a novel, elastic scaling regime, $E(k) \sim k^{-\xi}$, with $\xi \approx 2.3$. We study the contribution of the polymers to the flux of kinetic energy through scales, and find that it can be decomposed into two parts: one increase in effective viscous dissipation, and a purely elastic contribution that dominates over the nonlinear flux in the range of $k$ over which the elastic scaling is observed. The multiscale balance between the two fluxes determines the crossover wavenumber which depends non-monotically on the Deborah number. Consistently, structure functions also show two scaling ranges, with intermittency present in both of them in equal measure.

We use direct numerical simulations and scaling arguments to study coarsening in binary fluid mixtures with a conserved order parameter in the droplet-spinodal regime -- the volume fraction of the droplets is neither too small nor symmetric -- for small diffusivity and viscosity. Coagulation of droplets drives a turbulent flow that eventually decays. We uncover a novel coarsening mechanism, driven by turbulence where the characteristic length scale of the flow is different from the characteristic length scale of droplets, giving rise to a domain growth law of $t^{1/2}$, where $t$ is time. At intermediate times, both the flow and the droplets form self-similar structures: the structure factor $S(q) \sim q^{-2}$ and the kinetic energy spectra $E(q) \sim q^{-5/3}$ for an intermediate range of $q$, the wavenumber., Comment: 10 pages 7 figures

We study the spreading of viruses, such as SARS-CoV-2, by airborne aerosols, via a new first-passage-time problem for Lagrangian tracers that are advected by a turbulent flow: By direct numerical simulations of the three-dimensional (3D) incompressible, Navier-Stokes equation, we obtain the time $t_R$ at which a tracer, initially at the origin of a sphere of radius $R$, crosses the surface of the sphere \textit{for the first time}. We obtain the probability distribution function $\mathcal{P}(R,t_R)$ and show that it displays two qualitatively different behaviors: (a) for $R \ll L_{\rm I}$, $\mathcal{P}(R,t_R)$ has a power-law tail $\sim t_R^{-\alpha}$, with the exponent $\alpha = 4$ and $L_{\rm I}$ the integral scale of the turbulent flow; (b) for $l_{\rm I} \lesssim R $, the tail of $\mathcal{P}(R,t_R)$ decays exponentially. We develop models that allow us to obtain these asymptotic behaviors analytically. We show how to use $\mathcal{P}(R,t_R)$ to develop social-distancing guidelines for the mitigation of the spreading of airborne aerosols with viruses such as SARS-CoV-2.

We solve for waves in an isothermal, stratified medium with a magnetic field that points along a direction perpendicular to that of gravity and varies exponentially in the direction of gravity. We find exact analytical solutions for two different cases: (a) waves propagating along the direction of the magnetic field and (b) waves propagating along the direction of the gravity. In each case, we find solutions in terms of either the hypergeometric functions or their confluent cousins. We solve the resultant transcendental dispersion relation numerically. The changes in the eigenfrequencies due to a spatially inhomogeneous Alfv\'en wave speed are significant -- there are more oscillations or leaking of nodes of the eigenfunctions in regions of lower Alfv\'en speed and wave reflection from regions of larger Alfv\'en speed. Such changes in the dispersion relation and the mode structures may allow detection of magnetic fields buried in the stellar interior., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

The effect of turbulence on the mass and heat transfer between small heavy inertial particles (HIP) and an embedding fluid is studied. Two effects are identified. The first effect is due to the relative velocity between the fluid and the particles, and a model for the relative velocity is presented. The second effect is due to the clustering of particles, where the mass transfer rate is inhibited due to the rapid depletion of the consumed species inside the dense particle clusters. This last effect is relevant for large Damkohler numbers and it may totally control the mass transfer rate for Damkohler numbers larger than unity. A model that describes how this effect should be incorporated into existing particle simulation tools is presented., Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures

We obtain, by extensive direct numerical simulations, trajectories of heavy inertial particles in two-dimensional, statistically steady, homogeneous, and isotropic turbulent flows, with friction. We show that the probability distribution function $\mathcal{P}(\kappa)$, of the trajectory curvature $\kappa$, is such that, as $\kappa \to \infty$, $\mathcal{P}(\kappa) \sim \kappa^{-h_{\rm r}}$, with $h_{\rm r} = 2.07 \pm 0.09$. The exponent $h_{\rm r}$ is universal, insofar as it is independent of the Stokes number ($\rm{St}$) and the energy-injection wave number. We show that this exponent lies within error bars of their counterparts for trajectories of Lagrangian tracers. We demonstrate that the complexity of heavy-particle trajectories can be characterized by the number $N_{\rm I}(t,{\rm St})$ of inflection points (up until time $t$) in the trajectory and $n_{\rm I} ({\rm St}) \equiv \lim_{t\to\infty} \frac{N_{\rm I} (t,{\rm St})}{t} \sim {\rm St}^{-\Delta}$, where the exponent $\Delta = 0.33 \pm0.02$ is also universal., Comment: submitted to Phys. We uncover universal statistical properties of the trajectories of heavy inertial particles in three-dimensional, statistically steady, homogeneous, and isotropic turbulent flows by extensive direct numerical simulations. We show that the probability distribution functions (PDFs) $P(\phi)$, of the angle $\phi$ between the Eulerian velocity ${\bf u}$ and the particle velocity ${\bf v}$, at this point and time, shows a power-law region in which $P(\phi) \sim \phi^{-\gamma}$, with a new universal exponent $\gamma \simeq 4$. Furthermore, the PDFs of the trajectory curvature $\kappa$ and modulus $\theta$ of the torsion $\vartheta$ have power-law tails that scale, respectively, as $P(\kappa) \sim \kappa^{-h_\kappa}$, as $\kappa \to \infty$, and $P(\theta) \sim \theta^{-h_\theta}$, as $\theta \to \infty$, with exponents $h_\kappa \simeq 2.5$ and $h_\theta \simeq 3$ that are universal to the extent that they do not depend on the Stokes number ${\rm St}$ (given our error bars). We also show that $\gamma$, $h_\kappa$ and $h_\theta$ can be obtained by using simple stochastic models. We characterize the complexity of heavy-particle trajectories by the number $N_{\rm I}(t,{\rm St})$ of points (up until time $t$) at which $\vartheta$ changes sign. We show that $n_{\rm I}({\rm St}) \equiv \lim_{t\to\infty} \frac{N_{\rm I}(t,{\rm St})}{t} \sim {\rm St}^{-\Delta}$, with $\Delta \simeq 0.4$ a universal exponent.

In the presence of strong density stratification, turbulence can lead to a large-scale instability of a horizontal magnetic field if its strength is in a suitable range (within a few percent of the turbulent equipartition value). This instability is related to a suppression of the turbulent pressure so that the turbulence contribution to the mean magnetic pressure becomes negative. This results in the excitation of a negative effective magnetic pressure instability (NEMPI). This instability has so far only been studied for an imposed magnetic field. We want to know how NEMPI works when the mean magnetic field is generated self-consistently by an $\alpha^2$ dynamo, whether it is affected by global spherical geometry, and whether it can influence the properties of the dynamo itself. We adopt the mean-field approach which has previously been shown to provide a realistic description of NEMPI in direct numerical simulations. We assume axisymmetry and solve the mean-field equations with the Pencil-Code for an adiabatic stratification at a total density contrast in the radial direction of approximately 4 orders of magnitude. NEMPI is found to work when the dynamo-generated field is about 4% of the equipartition value, which is achieved through strong $\alpha$ quenching. This instability is excited in the top 5% of the outer radius provided the density contrast across this top layer is at least 10. NEMPI is found to occur at lower latitudes when the mean magnetic field is stronger. For weaker fields, NEMPI can make the dynamo oscillatory with poleward migration. NEMPI is a viable mechanism for producing magnetic flux concentrations in a strongly stratified spherical shell in which a magnetic field is generated by a strongly quenched $\alpha$ effect dynamo., Comment: published in A&A

We show analytically that the mean magnetic field does not grow, but, in an infinitely large domain, the mean-squared magnetic field shows exponential growth of the fastest growing mode at a rate proportional to the shear rate, which agrees with earlier numerical results of Yousef et al (2008) and recent analytical treatment by Heinemann et al (2011) who use a method different from ours. The negative effective magnetic pressure instability discovered recently in direct numerical simulations (DNS) may play a crucial role in the formation of sunspots and active regions in the Sun and stars. This instability is caused by a negative contribution of turbulence to the effective mean Lorentz force (the sum of turbulent and non-turbulent contributions) and results in formation of large-scale inhomogeneous magnetic structures from initial uniform magnetic field. Earlier investigations of this instability in DNS of stably stratified, externally forced, isothermal hydromagnetic turbulence in the regime of large plasma beta are now extended into the regime of larger scale separation ratios where the number of turbulent eddies in the computational domain is about 30. Strong spontaneous formation of large-scale magnetic structures is seen even without performing any spatial averaging. These structures encompass many turbulent eddies. The characteristic time of the instability is comparable to the turbulent diffusion time, L^2/eta_t, where eta_t is the turbulent diffusivity and L is the scale of the domain. DNS are used to confirm that the effective magnetic pressure does indeed become negative for magnetic field strengths below the equipartition field. We study the ability of magnetic helicity expulsion to alleviate catastrophic $\alpha$-quenching in mean field dynamos in two--dimensional spherical wedge domains. Motivated by the physical state of the outer regions of the Sun, we consider $\alpha^2\Omega$ mean field models with a dynamical $\alpha$ quenching. We include two mechanisms which have the potential to facilitate helicity expulsion, namely advection by a mean flow ("solar wind") and meridional circulation. We find that a wind alone can prevent catastrophic quenching, with the field saturating at finite amplitude. In certain parameter ranges, the presence of a large-scale meridional circulation can reinforce this alleviation. However, the saturated field strengths are typically below the equipartition field strength. We systematize the study of dynamic multiscaling of timedependent structure functions in different models of passive-scalar and fluid turbulence. We show that, by suitably normalizing these structure functions, we can eliminate their dependence on the origin of time at which we start our measurements and that these normalized structure functions yield the same linear bridge relations that relate the dynamic-multiscaling and equal-time exponents for statistically steady turbulence. We show analytically, for both the Kraichnan model of passive-scalar turbulence and its shell model analogue, and numerically, for the Gledzer–Ohkitani–Yamada (GOY) shell model of fluid turbulence and a shell model for passive-scalar turbulence, that these exponents and bridge relations are the same for statistically steady and decaying turbulence. Thus, we provide strong evidence for dynamic universality, i.e. dynamicmultiscaling exponents do not depend on whether the turbulence decays or is statistically steady.

We discuss the dynamic multiscaling of velocity structure functions in fluid turbulence and contrast it with the dynamic scaling of correlation functions in critical phenomena. We then outline our study of the dynamic multiscaling of velocity structure functions in the Gledzer–Ohkitani–Yamada shell model for fluid turbulence

2,4-Dinitrophenol and paranitrophenol are two major soil pollutants which are known to be metabolized by different soil microbes. Relative phytotoxicities of these parent compounds and their metabolic transformation products to the growth of cucumber seedlings were assessed. It was evident that such microbial transformations widely occurring in the soil are effective detoxification reactions and are beneficial for the plants.
