In this study, we investigate the bulk electronic structure of Pb-substituted LaO$_{0.5}$F$_{0.5}$BiS$_2$ single crystals, using two types of hard-x-ray spectroscopy. High-energy-resolution fluorescence-detected x-ray absorption spectroscopy revealed a spectral change at low temperatures. Using density functional theory (DFT) simulations, we find that the temperature-induced change originates from a structural phase transition, similar to the pressure-induced transition in LaO$_{0.5}$F$_{0.5}$BiS$_2$. This finding suggests that the mechanism of bulk superconductivity induced by Pb substitution is the same as that under high pressure. Furthermore, a novel low-valence state with a mixture of divalent and trivalent Bi ions is discovered using hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy with the aid of DFT calculations., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures, 4 tables

According to a few studies, UAE for PPH was associated with preterm birth, fetal growth restriction (FGR), and placenta accreta spectrum (PAS) in subsequent pregnancies. These previous studies, however, lacked controls, and to the best of our knowledge, no systematic literature reviews have been conducted thus far. We report the results of our retrospective case–control study of pregnancies after UAE at a single center and include a literature review to evaluate the risk of PAS in pregnancies after UAE.Methods: We retrospectively reviewed data from deliveries at our hospital between January 2012 and October 2017. We divided the delivery data into cases with previous UAEs performed for PPH (the post-UAE group) and those without UAEs (the non-UAE group, which included women without previous PPH). We defined PAS as cases in which hysterectomy was performed and pathological examination confirmed the diagnosis. Results are presented as odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs).Results: We used data from 3155 patients in this study, of whom 16 patients had undergone UAE (post-UAE group) and 3139 had not (non-UAE group). We found no differences between the groups in terms of frequency of preterm births (12.5% versus 14.2%, respectively; OR, 0.863; 95% CI, 0.218 to 3.414; P = 0.84) or FGR (6.2% versus 10.0%, respectively; OR, 0.602; 95% CI, 0.104 to 3.584; P = 0.61). However, cases of PAS were significantly more common in the post-UAE group (37.5%) than in the non-UAE group (1.2%; OR, 50.303; 95% CI, 17.38 to 145.592; P < 0.01).Conclusion: Our results suggest that previous UAE is a significant risk factor for PAS.Keywords: placenta accreta, placenta accreta spectrum, uterine artery embolization, postpartum hemorrhage, obstetric outcomes

The photoinduced valence dynamics of EuNi$_2$(Si$_{0.21}$Ge$_{0.79}$)$_2$ are investigated using time-resolved X-ray absorption spectroscopy for Eu $M_5$-edge. Through the pump-probe technique with synchrotron X-ray and Ti:sapphire laser pulse, a photoinduced valence transition is observed from Eu$^{3+}$ to Eu$^{2+}$. Because the lifetime of a photoinduced state can be up to 3 ns, a metastable state is considered to be realized. By comparing the experimental results with the theoretical calculations, the photoinduced valence transition between Eu 4$f$ and conduction electrons is quantitatively evaluated., 5 pages, 5 figures

A two-phase cold plate using evaporators of grooved double-pipe type has been tested in order to examine its heat transfer and hydrodynamic characteristics under practical operating conditions. Under uniform heat load, excellent temperature uniformity of the cold plate was obtained. Under uneven heat load, however, the temperature distributions were not uniform, high at an active area and low at an inactive area. It seems to be due to ineffective liquid flow through inactive pipes, which causes liquid shortage at active tubes and over-cooling by sub-cooled liquid at inactive tubes. Parallel operations with two cold plates were performed successfully demonstrating that the both temperatures were kept at the same level even under different heat loads. In a certain operating condition, individual flow rate of the two cold plates was observed to oscillate symmetrically to each other, while total flow rate was kept constant and no anomalous behavior on heat transfer was induced. We study the mixed valence transition ($T$$_{v}$ $\sim$80 K) in EuNi$_{2}$(Si$_{0.2}$Ge$_{0.8}$)$_{2}$ using Eu 3$d-4f$ X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and resonant photoemission spectroscopy (RESPES). The Eu$^{2+}$ and Eu$^{3+}$ main peaks show a giant resonance and the spectral features match very well with atomic multiplet calculations. The spectra show dramatic temperature ($T$)-dependent changes over large energies ($\sim$10 eV) in RESPES and XAS. The observed non-integral mean valencies of $\sim$2.35 $\pm$ 0.03 ($T$ = 120 K) and $\sim$2.70 $\pm$ 0.03 ($T$ = 40 K) indicate homogeneous mixed valence above and below $T$$_{v}$. The redistribution between Eu$^{2+}$$4f^7$+$[spd]^0$ and Eu$^{3+}$$4f^6$+$[spd]^1$ states is attributed to a hybridization change coupled to a Kondo-like volume collapse., 4 pages, 3 figures

To study interstitial insulin and glucose concentrations, microdialysis was performed in the medial femoral muscles in normal SD rats as well as in insulin-resistant obese Zucker rats during a euglycemic insulin clamp. [14C]inulin was given (0.1 mCi/rat) as a constant subcutaneous infusion 24 h before the insulin clamp. Insulin infusion rates were 5-8 mU x kg(-1) x min(-1) (low rate) for 140 min and 10-20 mU x kg(-1) x min(-1) (high rate) for another 100 min. The relationship between insulin and [14C]inulin dialysate recoveries was evaluated in vivo and in vitro in plasma to calculate interstitial insulin concentration. Relative microdialysis recovery of interstitial insulin in vivo was 3.0 +/- 0.3% (mean +/- SE, n = 68). In normal SD rats, plasma and interstitial insulin concentrations were identical when plasma insulin wasor =250 mU/ml, whereas interstitial insulin was lower when plasma insulin wasor =350 mU/ml. Half-maximal glucose infusion rate was achieved in the presence of plasma and interstitial insulin concentrations of approximately 140 mU/ml, whereas maximal glucose disposal was seen at interstitial insulin concentrations of approximately 325 mU/ml, corresponding to approximately 500 mU/ml in plasma. In electrically stimulated and contracting (1 Hz) normal muscle with markedly increased blood flow, the dialysate insulin concentration was significantly higher at high rates, but not at low rates, of insulin infusion. In insulin-resistant obese Zucker rats, the interstitial insulin concentration was similar to that in plasma, even at pharmacological concentrations. The glucose infusion rate was significantly lower in the obese Zucker rats at both insulin infusion rates than in the lean animals. The glucose content in dialysates from skeletal muscle was equal in both obese and lean rats during the low insulin infusion rate. During the high insulin infusion rate, dialysate glucose concentrations decreased significantly in both groups but were significantly higher in the obese Zucker rats. The data suggest that transport of insulin and glucose diffusion across the capillary wall are rate limiting for insulin as well as for glucose metabolism in muscle in normal rats. This does not appear to be the case in the insulin-resistant obese Zucker rats, where the reduced insulin responsiveness in muscle is due to muscular cellular defects rather than an inhibited transcapillary delivery of insulin.

Methanol aqueous solutions had the weight percent about 9.7-20.0 and ethanol aqueous solutions 7.8-20.1. Using measured solubilities, we could verified that the relation between the solubility of lead sulfate and the dielectric constant of each solvent was almost satisfied with the following equation (1) which was introduced in former report (J. Chem. Soc. Japan 68, 19 (1947)). The solvation radius of lead sulfate have also been calculated. 〓 (1)

Ureaplasma spp. are members of the family Mycoplasmataceae and have been considered to be associated with chorioamnionitis and preterm delivery. However, it is unclear whether Ureaplasma spp. have virulence factors related to these manifestations. The purpose of the present study was to determine whether the immunogenic protein multiple-banded antigen (MBA) from Ureaplasma parvum is a virulence factor for preterm delivery. We partially purified MBA from a type strain and clinical isolates of U. parvum, and also synthesized a diacylated lipopeptide derived from U. parvum, UPM-1. Using luciferase assays, both MBA-rich fraction MRF and UPM-1 activated the NF-κB pathway via TLR2. UPM-1 upregulated IL-1β, IL-6, IL-12p35, TNF-α, MIP2, LIX, and iNOS in mouse peritoneal macrophage. MRF or UPM-1 was injected into uteri on day 15 of gestation on pregnant C3H/HeN mice. The intrauterine MRF injection group had a significantly higher incidence of intrauterine fetal death (IUFD; 38.5%) than the control group (14.0%). Interestingly, intrauterine injection of UPM-1 caused preterm deliveries at high concentration (80.0%). In contrast, a low concentration of UPM-1 induced a significantly higher rate of fetal deaths (55.2%) than the control group (14.0%). The placentas of the UPM-1 injection group showed neutrophil infiltration and increased iNOS protein expression. Our data indicate that MBA from the clinical isolate of U. parvum is a potential virulence factor for IUFD and preterm delivery in mice and that the N-terminal diacylated lipopeptide is essential for the initiation of inflammation.

Annexin A1 (AnxA1) is a protein that displays potent anti-inflammatory properties, but its expression in eye tissue and its role in ocular inflammatory diseases have not been well studied. We investigated the mechanism of action and potential uses of AnxA1 and its mimetic peptide (Ac2-26) in the endotoxin-induced uveitis (EIU) rodent model and in human ARPE-19 cells activated by LPS. In rats, analysis of untreated EIU after 24 and 48 h or EIU treated with topical applications or with a single s.c. injection of Ac2-26 revealed the anti-inflammatory actions of Ac2-26 on leukocyte infiltration and on the release of inflammatory mediators; the systemic administration of Boc2, a formylated peptide receptor (fpr) antagonist, abrogated the peptide’s protective effects. Moreover, AnxA1−/− mice exhibited exacerbated EIU compared with wild-type animals. Immunohistochemical studies of ocular tissue showed a specific AnxA1 posttranslational modification in EIU and indicated that the fpr2 receptor mediated the anti-inflammatory actions of AnxA1. In vitro studies confirmed the roles of AnxA1 and fpr2 and the protective effects of Ac2-26 on the release of chemical mediators in ARPE-19 cells. Molecular analysis of NF-κB translocation and IL-6, IL-8, and cyclooxygenase-2 gene expression indicated that the protective effects of AnxA1 occur independently of the NF-κB signaling pathway and possibly in a posttranscriptional manner. Together, our data highlight the role of AnxA1 in ocular inflammation, especially uveitis, and suggest the use of AnxA1 or its mimetic peptide Ac2-26 as a therapeutic approach.
