Artifacts support evaluating new research results and help comparing them with the state of the art in a field of interest. Over the past years, several artifacts have been introduced to support research in the field of self-adaptive systems. While these artifacts have shown their value, it is not clear to what extent these artifacts support research on problems in self-adaptation that are relevant to industry. This paper provides a set of guidelines for artifacts that aim at supporting industry-relevant research on self-adaptation. The guidelines that are grounded on data obtained from a survey with practitioners were derived during working sessions at the 17th International Symposium on Software Engineering for Adaptive and Self-Managing Systems. Artifact providers can use the guidelines for aligning future artifacts with industry needs; they can also be used to evaluate the industrial relevance of existing artifacts. Brain research has in recent years indisputably entered a new epoch, driven bysubstantialmethodologicaladvances and digitallyenabled data integration and modeling at multiple scales –from molecules to the whole system. Major advances are emerging at theintersection of neurosciencewith technology and computing. This new science of the brain integrates high-quality basic research,systematic data integration across multiple scales, a new culture of large-scale collaboration andtranslation into applications. The production domain is permeated by heterogeneous data sources, a variety of IT systems, and complex industrial use cases - aspects that offer an exciting field for research. The MoPro Workshop aims to be a platform for researchers and practitioners within the production domain to exchange their modeling techniques, interesting use cases, and challenges. We are interested in the use of models for development, production, and usage cycles, as well as model-based and model-driven approaches that span these domains across disciplinary boundaries.

The complexity of wind energy systems combined with an increased trend towards mass customization require the collaboration of many experts to achieve high quality products. Currently, a major issue arises from the lack of data integration among the different tools used during the engineering process which may cause system failures eventually. Existing tools largely do not support automatic detection and indication of erroneous or contradictory parameter values between artifacts of different tools. Employing a model-driven and functional engineering approach enables to establish an integrated toolchain for the management and visualization of engineering artifacts that consume and produce the data. Within this paper, we present an automatic approach to derive an engineering digital twin for the cooperative development and management of engineering artifacts from functional models of the system under development. We evaluate our approach on the example of a hydraulic pump within the cooling system of a wind turbine. The prototype can be coupled with an existing engineering tool ecosystem. The approach enables to exchange the data produced by engineering artifacts according to a functional system model which facilitates the cooperation between different stakeholders throughout the development process.

Human workers need to cope with complex production settings when handling and monitoring cyber-physical production systems. Assistive systems can provide situational step-by-step support for human behavior, e.g., when interacting with a machine or for manual assembly. These systems need to take personal knowledge, workers skills or personal restrictions into account and are therefore subject to privacy concerns. However, the engineering of such interactive assistive systems within the production domain is a complex task as they might support critical functionality in dangerous environments and have a high need for safety and privacy considerations due to processing personal data. We want to investigate how the software engineering process of assistive systems in production can be improved to achieve higher reusability. Current research focuses on specific use cases and implements systems specifically for those needs without reusability in mind. We suggest using behavior and context models in a generative approach, to create a reusable method to engineer assistive systems for production environments, either as own applications or as services integrated within digital twins. We have already applied model-driven methods for assistive systems in the smart home domain and discuss the opportunities and challenges of an application of these methods for the production domain. These methods can facilitate the engineering of assistive functionalities within applications in production while meeting privacy, adaptability, and context-sensitivity requirements.

Cyber-Physical Production Systems (CPPSs) are envisioned as next-generation adaptive production systems combining modern production techniques with the latest information technology. A CPPS creates a complex environment between different domains (mechanical, electrical, software engineering), requiring multidisciplinary solutions to tackle growing complexity issues and reduce (maintenance) effort. Software plays an increasingly important role in assuring an effective and efficient operation of CPPSs. However, software engineering methods applied for CPPSs seem to lag behind modern software engineering methods, where tremendous progress has been made in the last years. We initiated the Software Engineering in Cyber-Physical Production Systems Workshop (SECPPS-WS) to analyze and overcome this gap. After two instances with mostly academic participants, we conducted a full-day workshop with nine industry representatives from eight companies that develop and maintain CPPSs. Each industry representative presented their current work and challenges. We collected these challenges and condensed a categorized list of challenges backed by industry statements and literature. This paper presents the resulting list and pointers to (partial) solutions to offer guidance for academia and identify promising research opportunities in this area. Domain-Specific Languages (DSLs) are tailored to a specific domain which requires them to provide domain-specific concepts and a sophisticated tooling for their engineering; aspects which we address with the language workbench MontiCore. As we use MontiCore for research and teaching, we are interested in reducing the entry barrier to use and engineer MontiCore DSLs. While there are approaches for ready-to-use learning environments such as web-based editors, only a few provide a tailored solution for specific DSLs. Within this paper, we present our experiences using JupyterLab in combination with the infrastructure of MontiCore for teaching the use and engineering of DSLs in an interactive manner. We have realized three practical courses and one conference tutorial applying this technical approach. The front-end provides immediate feedback and includes supporting explanations in an integrated manner. Initial feedback indicates that this approach can lower the entry barrier for DSL use and engineering for students and practitioners.

The vast amount of data in modern manufacturing demands acquisition of contextualized data to enable fast decision making where domain expertise must be provided at run-time. Within this paper, we investigate the research question how to handle human-machine-interactions for engineering of digital shadows and still ensure the traceability of computation and simulation results. Current research for digital shadows concentrates on modeling key elements such as data sharing or metadata, but does not incorporate human-machine-interaction or the traceability of data aggregation. In this paper, we present a conceptual model which covers the base concepts for digital shadows integrating human-machine-interaction by utilizing workflows. We extend the conceptual digital shadow model defined within the “Internet of Production” excellence cluster and showcase our approach on an example. This contribution presents an applicable modeling approach for designing digital shadows which provide contextual information of the underlying human integrated process.

The aim of the Human Behavior Monitoring and Support (HBMS) project has been to actively assist individuals in activities of daily living and other situations using users’ own episodic knowledge. This knowledge is represented and preserved in HBMS in the HCM, the Human Cognitive Model, expressed in the domain specific modelling language HCM-L. HCM also forms the base for reasoning, model matching and support state visualization. Moreover, in the HBMS-System conceptual models are also used to define interfaces to activity recognition systems, support clients and data available in the Semantic Web. Thus, we see HBMS-System as an application of the Model Centered Architecture (MCA) paradigm. This issue grew out of our desire to thank Heinrich C. Mayr for his various contributions to the scientific community. Thus, we dedicate this collection of inspiring articles a great boss, teacher, colleague and last but not least friend. His contributions have been celebrated at the UNISCON 2008 on occasion of his 60th birthday, in an official ceremony at the Alpen-Adria Universität Klagenfurt on occasion of his 65th birthday where he received the Golden Medal of the city of Klagenfurt, and at the INFORMATIK 2016 on occasion of his transition to emeritus status. All articles in this issue are related to conceptual modelling, an increasingly important topic in informatics and a main research area of Heinrich C. Mayr. As the ability of modelling is one of the fundamental cognitive skills of human beings and a method used in various domains up to and including our private life. Mehr und komplexere technische Systeme im täglichen Leben, eine älter werdende Gesellschaft und der nur verzögerbare, aber nicht verhinderbare Abbau der kognitiven Leistungsfähigkeit: Unsere Gesellschaft muss sich den Herausforderungen zunehmend veränderten Lebenssituationen stellen. Assistenzsysteme können Menschen unterstützen, technische Systeme zu beherrschen bzw. allgemeiner, ihre Handlungen des täglichen Lebens auszuführen. Die Kompensation von Verminderungen der kognitiven Leistungsfähigkeit durch Assistenzsysteme ist nur einer der Teilbereich des Forschungsgebiets Ambient Assisted Living (AAL). Diese Dissertation beschäftigt sich mit Fragestellungen, die sich aus einem gänzlich neuen Ansatz ergeben, nämlich der Unterstützung anhand kognitiver Modelle aus dem eigenen episodischen Wissen. Zentral für diese Dissertation ist die Frage, welche Modellierungskonzepte benötigt werden und welche Eigenschaften eine Modellierungssprache haben muss, um episodisches Wissen verlustfrei abbilden und reproduzieren zu können. Darauf aufbauend ergeben sich u.a. folgende Fragen: Ist die konzeptuelle Modellierung grundsätzlich für die Verhaltensmodellierung im AAL-Kontext geeignet? Ist die im Rahmen der Dissertation entwickelte Human Cognitive Modeling Language (HCM-L) ausreichend, alles an realen Handlungen Relevante modellieren zu können, um so eine gute Datenbasis für die zukünftige Unterstützung bieten zu können? Welche Funktionalitäten muss ein Werkzeug zur graphischen Modellierung haben? Und wie kann man Verhaltensbereiche voneinander abgrenzen, thematisch clustern und ihre groben Zusammenhänge darstellen? Diese Dissertation wurde im Rahmen des AAL-Projekts HBMS (Human Behavior Monitoring and Support, gefördert durch die Klaus Tschira Stiftung, Heidelberg) verfasst. Assistance systems can help people to carry out their activities of daily life and to handle such technical systems easier. The support of cognitive functions by assistance systems is a part of the research field Ambient Assisted Living (AAL). This thesis deals with an entirely new approach, namely the support of a person by cognitive models from one's own episodic knowledge. The main question for this thesis is which modeling concepts are needed and which properties must a modeling language have to represent and reproduce episodic knowledge without any loss. Based on that the following questions come up: Is a slim pre-design approach suitable for modeling of behavior in an AAL context? Is it possible to model human behavior with the Human Cognitive Modeling Language (HCM-L), developed in this thesis, such that the models can be used for latter support? Which functionalities should be provided by a tool for graphical modeling with HCM-L? And how is it possible to distinguish between different behavioral units, cluster them thematically and show their relationships? This thesis was written within the AAL project HBMS (Human Behavior Monitoring and Support, funded by the Klaus Tschira Stiftung, Heidelberg). The project aims at prolonging the personal autonomy of a person by providing support with a cognitive model of this persons' former behavior.
