Search

A large sub-mm survey with Herschel will enable many exciting science opportunities, especially in an era of wide-field optical and radio surveys and high resolution cosmic microwave background experiments. The Herschel-SPIRE Legacy Survey (HSLS), will lead to imaging data over 4000 sq. degrees at 250, 350, and 500 micron. Major Goals of HSLS are: (a) produce a catalog of 2.5 to 3 million galaxies down to 26, 27 and 33 mJy (50% completeness; 5 sigma confusion noise) at 250, 350 and 500 micron, respectively, in the southern hemisphere (3000 sq. degrees) and in an equatorial strip (1000 sq. degrees), areas which have extensive multi-wavelength coverage and are easily accessible from ALMA. Two thirds of the of the sources are expected to be at z > 1, one third at z > 2 and about a 1000 at z > 5. (b) Remove point source confusion in secondary anisotropy studies with Planck and ground-based CMB data. (c) Find at least 1200 strongly lensed bright sub-mm sources leading to a 2% test of general relativity. (d) Identify 200 proto-cluster regions at z of 2 and perform an unbiased study of the environmental dependence of star formation. (e) Perform an unbiased survey for star formation and dust at high Galactic latitude and make a census of debris disks and dust around AGB stars and white dwarfs., White paper supplement to the proposal submitted by the HSLS science team to ESA for Herschel open-time programs

MOONS is the new Multi-Object Optical and Near-infrared Spectrograph currently under construction for the Very Large Telescope (VLT) at ESO. This remarkable instrument combines, for the first time, the collecting power of an 8-m telescope, 1000 fibres with individual robotic positioners, and both low- and high-resolution simultaneous spectral coverage across the 0.64-1.8 micron wavelength range. This facility will provide the astronomical community with a powerful, world-leading instrument able to serve a wide range of Galactic, extragalactic and cosmological studies. Construction is now proceeding full steam ahead and this overview article presents some of the science goals and the technical description of the MOONS instrument. We present XMM-Newton X-ray observations and analysis of three DES $z>6.5$ quasars (VDES J0020$-$3653 at $z=6.824$, VDES J0244$-$5008 at $z=6.724$ and VDES J0224$-$4711 at $z=6.526$) and six other quasars with $6.438 < z < 6.747$ from the XMM-Newton public archive. Two of the nine quasars are detected at a high ($>$4$��$) significance level: VDES J0224$-$4711(z=6.53) at $9��$ and PSO J159$-$02 ($z=6.38$) at $8��$. They have a photon index of $��=1.82^{+0.29}_{-0.27}$ and $��=1.94^{+0.31}_{-0.29}$ respectively, which is consistent with the mean value of $\sim1.9$ found for quasars at all redshifts. The rest-frame $2-10$ keV luminosity of VDES J0224$-$4711, is $L_{2-10\mathrm{keV}} = (2.92\pm0.43)\times10^{45}\;\mathrm{erg\;s^{-1}}$, which makes this quasar one of the most X-ray luminous quasars at $z>5.5$ and the most X-ray luminous quasar at $z>6.5$, with a luminosity 6 times and 2.5 times larger than ULAS J1120+0641 ($z=7.08$) and ULAS J1342+0928 ($z=7.54$) respectively. The X-ray-to-optical power-law slopes of the nine quasars are consistent with the previously observed anti-correlation of $��_{ox}$ with UV luminosity $L_{2500\mathrm��}$. We find no evidence for evolution of $��_{ox}$ with redshift when the anti-correlation with UV luminosity is taken into account. Similar to previous studies at z$\sim$6 we have found remarkably consistent X-ray spectral properties between low (z$\sim$1) and high-redshift quasars. Our results add further evidence to the picture that the observable properties of high luminosity quasars over the UV to X-ray spectral region have not evolved significantly from $z\sim7$ to the present day and that quasars comparable to local versions existed 800 million years after the big bang., 8 pages; resubmitted to MNRAS

Groups and clusters of galaxies are a current focus of astronomical research owing to their role in determining the environmental effects on galaxies and the constraints they provide to cosmology. The eROSITA X-ray telescope on board the Spectrum Roentgen Gamma observatory will be launched in 2019 and will have completed eight scans of the full sky when 4MOST starts operating. The experiment will detect groups and clusters of galaxies through X-ray emission from the hot intergalactic medium. The purpose of the 4MOST eROSITA Galaxy Cluster Redshift Survey is to provide spectroscopic redshifts of the optical counterparts to the X-ray emission from 40,000 groups and clusters of galaxies so as to perform dynamical estimates of the total mass and to measure the properties of the member galaxies. The survey aims to obtain precise redshift measurements of the photometrically identified brightest cluster galaxies at redshift $z > 0.7$. At lower redshifts ($z < 0.7$), the programme aims to sample over 15 member galaxies per cluster and enable dynamical mass measurements to calibrate the clusters for cosmological experiments. At $z < 0.2$, eROSITA will also detect X-ray emission from galaxy groups and filaments. 4MOST spectroscopic data from the survey will be used for optical identification of galaxy groups down to eROSITA's mass detection limits of $10^{13} M_\odot$, as well as the detection of the largest filaments for pioneering studies of their X-ray emission., Part of the 4MOST issue of The Messenger, published in preparation of the 4MOST Community Workshop, see http://www.eso.org/sci/meetings/2019/4MOST.html

The current status of and motivation for the 4MOST survey strategy, as developed by the Consortium science team, are presented here. Key elements of the strategy are described, such as sky coverage, number of visits and total exposure times in different parts of the sky, and how to deal with different observing conditions. The task of organising the strategy is not simple, with many different surveys that have vastly different target brightnesses and densities, sample completeness levels, and signal-to-noise requirements. We introduce here a number of concepts that we will use to ensure all surveys are optimised. Astronomers who are planning to submit a Participating Survey proposal are strongly encouraged to read this article and any relevant 4MOST Survey articles in this issue of The Messenger such that they can optimally complement and benefit from the planned surveys of the 4MOST Consortium.

The UK's 2008 Climate Change Act sets a legally binding target for reducing territorial greenhouse gas emissions by 80% by 2050, relative to 1990 levels. Four pathways to achieve this target have been developed by the Department of Energy and Climate Change, with all pathways requiring increased us of bioenergy. A significant amount of this could be indigenously sourced from crops, but will increased domestic production of energy crops conflict with other agricultural priorities?To address this question, a coupled analysis of the UK energy system and land use has been developed. The two systems are connected by the production of bioenergy, and are projected forwards in time under the energy pathways, accounting for various constraints on land use for agriculture and ecosystem services.The results show different combinations of crop yield and compositions for the pathways lead to the appropriation of between 7% and 61% of UK's agricultural land for bioenergy production. This could result in competition for land for food production and other land uses, as well as indirect land use change in other countries due to an increase in bioenergy imports. Consequently, the potential role of bioenergy in achieving UK emissions reduction targets may face significant deployment challenges.

Damped Lyman α systems (DLAs), with N(H i) > 2 × 1020 atom cm−2, observed in the spectra of quasars have allowed us to quantify the chemical content of the Universe over cosmological scales. Such studies can be extended to lower column densities, in the sub-DLA range [1019 < N(H i) < 2 × 1020 atom cm−2], which are systems believed to contain a large fraction of the neutral hydrogen at z > 3.5. In this paper, we use a homogeneous sample of sub-DLAs from the European Southern Oberservatory (ESO) Ultraviolet-Visual Echelle Spectrograph (UVES) archives presented in Paper I, to determine observationally for the first time the shape of the column density distribution, ƒ(N), down to N(H i) = 1019 atom cm−2. The results are in good agreement with the predictions from Péroux et al. We also present the kinematic and clustering properties of this survey of sub-DLAs, which appear to be marginally different from the DLAs. We compare low- and high-ionization transition widths and find that the properties of the sub-DLAs span roughly the parameter space of DLAs. We also find hints of an increase of metallicity in systems with larger velocity widths in the metal lines, although the statistical significance of this result is low. Then we analyse the chemical content of this sample in conjunction with a compilation of abundances from 72 DLAs taken from the literature. As previously reported, the individual metallicities traced by [Fe/H] of these systems evolve mildly with redshift. Moreover, we analyse the H i column-density-weighted mean abundance, which is believed to be an indicator of the metallicity of the Universe. Although the number statistics is limited in the current sample, the results suggest a slightly stronger evolution of this quantity in the sub-DLA range. The effect is predominant at z < 2 and most of the evolution observed lies in this redshift range. Observational arguments support the hypothesis that the evolution we probe in the sub-DLA range is not due to their lower dust content. Therefore, these systems might be associated with a different class of objects, which better trace the overall chemical evolution of the Universe. Finally, we present abundance ratios of [Si/Fe], [O/Fe], [C/Fe] and [Al/Fe] for sub-DLAs in conjunction with DLA measurements from the literature. The elemental ratios in sub-DLAs are comparable with those from DLAs. It is difficult to decipher whether the observed values are the effect of nucleosynthesis or are due to differential dust depletion. The metallicities are compared with two different sets of models of galaxy evolution in order to provide constraints on the morphology of quasar absorbers

Absorbers seen in the spectrum of background quasars are a unique tool with which to select H i-rich galaxies at all redshifts. In turns, these galaxies allow us to determine the cosmological evolution of the H i gas ΩHi+Heii, which is a possible indicator of gas consumption as star formation proceeds. The damped Lyman α (Lya) systems (DLAs with NH i = 1020.3 cm−2), in particular, are believed to contain a large fraction of the H i gas but there are also indications that lower column-density systems, called ‘sub-damped Lyα' systems, play a role at high redshift. Here we present the discovery of high-redshift sub-DLAs based on 17 z > 4 quasar spectra observed with the Ultraviolet—Visual Echelle Spectrograph (UVES) on the Very Large Telescope (VLT). This sample is composed of 21 new sub-DLAs which, together with another 10 systems from previous European Southern Observatory archive studies, make up a homogeneous sample. The redshift evolution of the number density of several classes of absorbers is derived and shows that all systems seem to be evolving in the redshift range from z = 5 to z∼ 3. These results are further used to estimate the redshift evolution of the characteristic radius of these classes of absorbers, assuming a Holmberg relation and one unique underlying parent population. DLAs are found to have R* ∼ 20 h−1100 kpc, while sub-DLAs have R*∼ 40 h−1100 kpc. The redshift evolution of the column density distribution, f(N,z), down to NH i = 1019 cm−2 is also presented. A departure from a power law due to a flattening of f(N,z) in the sub-DLA regime is present in the data. f(N,z) is further used to determine the H i gas mass contained in sub-DLAs at z > 2. The complete sample shows that sub-DLAs are important at all redshifts from z = 5 to z = 2. Finally, the possibility that sub-DLAs are less affected by the effects of dust obscuration than classical DLAs is discussed

An accurate method to measure the abundance of high-redshift galaxies involves the observation of absorbers along the line of sight towards a background quasar. Here, we present abundance measurements of 13 z≥ 3 sub-damped Lyman α (sub-DLA) systems (quasar absorbers with H i column density in the range 19 < log N(H i) < 20.3 cm−2) based on high-resolution observations with the VLT UVES spectrograph. These observations more than double the amount of metallicity information for sub-DLAs available at z > 3. These new data, combined with other sub-DLA measurements from the literature, confirm the stronger evolution of metallicity with redshift for sub-DLAs than for the classical damped Lyman α absorbers. In addition, these observations are used to compute for the first time, using photoionization modelling in a sample of sub-DLAs, the fraction of gas that is ionized. Based on these results, we calculate that sub-DLAs contribute no more than 6 per cent of the expected amount of metals at z∼ 2.5. We therefore conclude that, even if sub-DLAs are found to be more metal-rich than classical DLAs, their contribution is insufficient to solve the so-called ‘missing-metals' problem

We present ALMA observations of the [CII] fine structure line and the underlying far-infrared (FIR) dust continuum emission in J1120+0641, the most distant quasar currently known (z=7.1). We also present observations targeting the CO(2-1), CO(7-6) and [CI] 369 micron lines in the same source obtained at the VLA and PdBI. We find a [CII] line flux of F_[CII]=1.11+/-0.10 Jy km/s and a continuum flux density of S_227GHz=0.53+/-0.04 mJy/beam, consistent with previous unresolved measurements. No other source is detected in continuum or [CII] emission in the field covered by ALMA (~25"). At the resolution of our ALMA observations (0.23", or 1.2 kpc, a factor ~70 smaller beam area compared to previous measurements), we find that the majority of the emission is very compact: a high fraction (~80%) of the total line and continuum flux is associated with a region 1-1.5 kpc in diameter. The remaining ~20% of the emission is distributed over a larger area with radius, 10 pages, 4 figures. Accepted for publication in ApJ

We present spectroscopic confirmation of two new gravitationally lensed quasars, discovered in the Dark Energy Survey (DES) and Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) based on their multiband photometry and extended morphology in DES images. Images of DES J0115−5244 show a red galaxy with two blue point sources at either side, which are images of the same quasar at zs = 1.64 as obtained by our long-slit spectroscopic data. The Einstein radius estimated from the DES images is 0.51 arcsec. DES J2146−0047 is in the area of overlap between DES and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Two blue components are visible in the DES and SDSS images. The SDSS fibre spectrum shows a quasar component at zs = 2.38 and absorption by Mg II and Fe II at zl = 0.799, which we tentatively associate with the foreground lens galaxy. Our long-slit spectra show that the blue components are resolved images of the same quasar. The Einstein radius is 0.68 arcsec, corresponding to an enclosed mass of 1.6 × 1011M . Three other candidates were observed and rejected, two being low-redshift pairs of starburst galaxies, and one being a quasar behind a blue star. These first confirmation results provide an important empirical validation of the data mining and model-based selection that is being applied to the entire DES data set.

We present a new population of z>2 dust-reddened, Type 1 quasars with 0.510^{13}L_0), high-redshift dusty quasars to 38. There is no evidence for reddened quasars having significantly different H$��$ equivalent widths relative to unobscured quasars. The average black-hole masses (~10^9-10^10 M_0) and bolometric luminosities (~10^{47} erg/s) are comparable to the most luminous unobscured quasars at the same redshift, but with a tail extending to very high luminosities of ~10^{48} erg/s. Sixty-six per cent of the reddened quasars are detected at $>3��$ at 22um by WISE. The average 6um rest-frame luminosity is log10(L6um/erg/s)=47.1+/-0.4, making the objects among the mid-infrared brightest AGN currently known. The extinction-corrected space-density estimate now extends over three magnitudes (-30 < M_i < -27) and demonstrates that the reddened quasar luminosity function is significantly flatter than that of the unobscured quasar population at z=2-3. At the brightest magnitudes, M_i < -29, the space density of our dust-reddened population exceeds that of unobscured quasars. A model where the probability that a quasar becomes dust-reddened increases at high luminosity is consistent with the observations and such a dependence could be explained by an increase in luminosity and extinction during AGN-fuelling phases. The properties of our obscured Type 1 quasars are distinct from the heavily obscured, Compton-thick AGN that have been identified at much fainter luminosities and we conclude that they likely correspond to a brief evolutionary phase in massive galaxy formation., 16 pages, 9 figures (+ 2 appendices), Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present the Data Release 10 Quasar (DR10Q) catalog from the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey III. The catalog includes all BOSS objects that were targeted as quasar candidates during the first 2.5 years of the survey and that are confirmed as quasars via visual inspection of the spectra. The catalog also includes known quasars (mostly from SDSS-I and II) that were reobserved by BOSS. The catalog contains 166,583 quasars (74,454 are new discoveries since SDSS-DR9) detected over 6,373 deg$^{2}$ with robust identification and redshift measured by a combination of principal component eigenspectra. The number of quasars with $z>2.15$ (117,668) is $\sim$5 times greater than the number of $z>2.15$ quasars known prior to BOSS. Redshifts and FWHMs are provided for the strongest emission lines (CIV, CIII, MgII). The catalog identifies 16,461 broad absorption line quasars and gives their characteristics. For each object, the catalog presents five-band (u, g, r, i, z) CCD-based photometry with typical accuracy of 0.03 mag and information on the optical morphology and selection method. The catalog also contains X-ray, ultraviolet, near-infrared, and radio emission properties of the quasars, when available, from other large-area surveys. The calibrated digital spectra cover the wavelength region 3,600-10,500\AA\ at a spectral resolution in the range 1,300$, Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A. We present a new sample of purely near infra-red selected KVega2.5) quasar candidates at z~2 from 900 sq deg of data in the UKIDSS Large Area Survey (LAS). Five of these are spectroscopically confirmed to be heavily reddened Type 1 AGN with broad emission lines bringing our total sample of reddened quasars from the UKIDSS-LAS to 12 at z=1.4-2.7. At these redshifts, Ha (6563A) is in the K-band. However, the mean Ha equivalent width of the reddened quasars is only ten per cent larger than that of the optically selected population and cannot explain the extreme colours. Instead, dust extinction of Av~2-6 mags is required to reproduce the continuum colours of our sources. This is comparable to the dust extinctions seen in submillimetre galaxies at similar redshifts. We argue that the AGN are likely being observed in a relatively short-lived breakout phase when they are expelling gas and dust following a massive starburst, subsequently turning into UV-luminous quasars. Some of our quasars show direct evidence for strong outflows (v~800-1000 km/s) affecting the Ha line consistent with this scenario. We predict that a larger fraction of reddened quasar hosts are likely to be submillimetre bright compared to the UV-luminous quasar population. We use our sample to place new constraints on the fraction of obscured Type 1 AGN likely to be missed in optical surveys. Taken at face-value our findings suggest that the obscured fraction depends on quasar luminosity. This paper reports an exploratory study of statistical modelling of historical financial reporting and analysis in a sample of small growth enterprises. The study sought to identify those factors that determine whether particular financial reporting and analysis practices are undertaken, and to represent these explanatory factors in expressions that reflect their relative and combined influence. Dichotomous logistic regression is employed to model financial analysis and polytomous logistic regression is used to model financial reporting. The models developed seem moderately encouraging in terms of the statistical significance and predictive ability. The overall classification success for financial analysis is a modest 65 percent; but identifying users of financial ratio analysis is achieved with just below 90 percent accuracy. The overall classification success for a trichotomous financial reporting scale exceeds 70 percent; with anticipation of financial reporting at the highest level being as accurate as 90 percent. External validation of the models remains an important priority.

High redshift quasars (HZQs) with redshifts of z >~ 6 are so rare that any photometrically-selected sample of sources with HZQ-like colours is likely to be dominated by Galactic stars and brown dwarfs scattered from the stellar locus. It is impractical to reobserve all such candidates, so an alternative approach was developed in which Bayesian model comparison techniques are used to calculate the probability that a candidate is a HZQ, P_q, by combining models of the quasar and star populations with the photometric measurements of the object. This method was motivated specifically by the large number of HZQ candidates identified by cross-matching the UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS) Large Area Survey (LAS) to the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS): in the ~1900 deg^2 covered by the LAS in the UKIDSS Seventh Data Release (DR7) there are ~10^3 real astronomical point-sources with the measured colours of the target quasars, of which only ~10 are expected to be HZQs. Applying Bayesian model comparison to the sample reveals that most sources with HZQ-like colours have P_q = 0.1; these object were prioritized for reobservation by ranking according to P_q (and their likely redshift, which was also inferred from the photometric data). Most candidates were rejected after one or two (moderate depth) photometric measurements by recalculating P_q using the new data. That left seven confirmed HZQs, three of which were previously identified in the SDSS and four of which were new UKIDSS discoveries. The high efficiency of this Bayesian selection method suggests that it could usefully be extended to other HZQ surveys (e.g. searches by Pan-STARRS or VISTA) as well as to other searches for rare objects., Comment: submitted to MNRAS; 20 pages, 13 figures

The quasar ULAS J1120+0641 at redshift z=7.085 has a highly ionised near zone which is smaller than those around quasars of similar luminosity at z~6. The spectrum also exhibits evidence for a damping wing extending redward of the systemic Lya redshift. We use radiative transfer simulations in a cosmological context to investigate the implications for the ionisation state of the inhomogeneous IGM surrounding this quasar. Our simulations show that the transmission profile is consistent with an IGM in the vicinity of the quasar with a volume averaged HI fraction of f_HI>0.1 and that ULAS J1120+0641 has been bright for 10^6--10^7 yr. The observed spectrum is also consistent with smaller IGM neutral fractions, f_HI ~ 10^-3--10-4, if a damped Lya system in an otherwise highly ionised IGM lies within 5 proper Mpc of the quasar. This is, however, predicted to occur in only ~5 per cent of our simulated sight-lines for a bright phase of 10^6--10^7 yr. Unless ULAS J1120+0641 grows during a previous optically obscured phase, the low age inferred for the quasar adds to the theoretical challenge of forming a 2x10^9 M_sol black hole at this high redshift., 5 pages, 4 figures, accepted to MNRAS letters

[Aims]: We present the optical classification and redshift of 348 X-ray selected sources from the XMM-Newton Bright Serendipitous Survey (XBS), which contains a total of 400 objects (identification level=87%). About 240 are new identifications. In particular, we discuss in detail the classification criteria adopted for the active galactic nuclei (AGNs) population. The remaining sources in both samples are clusters/groups of galaxies and normal galaxies (i.e. probably not powered by an AGN). Furthermore, the percentage of type 2 AGNs (i.e. optically absorbed AGNs with 2$]]> mag) dramatically increases going from the 0.5-4.5 keV sample (%) to the 4.5-7.5 keV sample (%). We finally propose two simple diagnostic plots that can be easily used to obtain the spectral classification for relatively low-redshift AGNs even if the quality of the spectrum is not good. The quest to discover the most distant galaxies has developed rapidly in the last decade. We are now exploring redshifts of 6 and beyond, when the Universe was less than a billion years old, an epoch when the previously-neutral intergalactic medium was reionized. The continuing discovery of galaxies at progressively higher and higher redshifts has been driven by the availability of large telescopes on the ground and in space, improvements in detector technology, and new search strategies. Over the past 4 years, the Lyman break technique has been shown to be effective in isolating z~6 star-forming i'-drop galaxies through spectroscopic confirmation with large ground-based telescopes (Keck, Gemini and the ESO VLTs). Narrow-band imaging, notably with the wide field of the Subaru telescope, has also produced samples of Lyman-alpha emitters at these redshifts. A The discovery of this i'-drop galaxy population has been used to infer the global star formation rate density at this epoch (z~6), and we are now beginning to constrain the contribution to reionization of the UV flux from these galaxies. Infrared data from the Spitzer Space Telescope has been used to determine the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) from the rest-frame UV to the optical, and constrain the previous star formation histories, masses and ages. The indications are that much of the stellar mass of these galaxies might have formed in vigorous bursts at z>6. The next big advances would be to test the population synthesis modelling of these z~6 galaxies through spectroscopy of the rest-frame optical (rather than crude broad-band SEDs), and also to push the observational horizon for galaxies further to directly explore star formation during the reionization epoch. An accurate method to measure the abundance of high-redshift galaxies consists in the observation of absorbers along the line of sight toward a background quasar. Here, we present abundance measurements of 13 z>3 sub-Damped Lyman-alpha Systems (quasar absorbers with HI column density 19 < log N(HI) < 20.3 cm^-2) based on the high resolution observations with VLT UVES spectrograph. These observations more than double the metallicity information for sub-DLAs previously available at z>3. This new data, combined with other sub-DLA measurements from the literature, confirm the stronger metallicity redshift evolution than for the classical Damped Lyman-alpha absorbers. Besides, these observations are used to compute for the first time the fraction of gas ionised from photo-ionisation modelling in a sample of sub-DLAs. Based on these results, we calculate that sub-DLAs contribute no more than 6% of the expected amount of metals at z~2.5. We therefore conclude that even if sub-DLAs are found to be more metal-rich than classical DLAs, they are insufficient to close the so-called ``missing metals problem''., 30 figures, 24 tables. In turns, these allow to determine the cosmological evolution of the HI gas, Omega_HI+HeII, a possible indicator of gas consumption as star formation proceeds. The Damped Lyman-alpha systems (DLAs with N(HI) > 10^20.3 cm^-2), in particular, are believed to contain a large fraction of the HI gas but there are also indications that lower column density systems, named ``sub-Damped Lyman-alpha'' systems play a role at high-redshift. Here we present the discovery of high-redshift sub-DLAs based on 17 z>4 quasar spectra observed with the Ultraviolet-Visual Echelle Spectrograph (UVES) on VLT. This sample is composed of 21 new sub-DLAs which, together with another 10 systems from previous ESO archive studies, make up a homogeneous sample. The redshift evolution of the number density of several classes of absorbers is derived and shows that all systems seem to be evolving in the redshift range from z=5 to z~3. This is further used to estimate the redshift evolution of the characteristic radius of these classes of absorbers assuming a Holmberg relation and one unique underlying parent population. DLAs are found to have R_* ~ 20 h_100^-1 kpc, while sub-DLAs have R_* ~ 40 h_100^-1 kpc. The redshift evolution of the column density distribution, f(N,z), down to N(HI) = 10^19 cm^-2 is also presented. A departure from a power law due to a flattening of f(N,z) in the sub-DLA regime is present in the data. f(N,z) is further used to determine the HI gas mass contained in sub-DLAs at z>2. The complete sample shows that sub-DLAs are important at all redshifts from z=5 to z=2. We report on submillimetre observations of three high redshift (z>6) quasars, made using the SCUBA camera on the JCMT. Only one of the sample was detected at 850um-- SDSS J1148+5251 (z=6.43). It was also detected (>3 sigma significance) at 450um, one of the few z>4 quasars for which this is the case. In combination with existing millimetric data, the submm detections allow us to place limits on the temperature of the submm-emitting dust, hence on the mass of dust to be synthesized under the time constraint imposed by the quasar's redshift., 5 pages, MNRAS, in press

We report results of a deep wide-field narrowband survey for redshift z~5.7 Ly alpha emitters carried out with SuprimeCam on Subaru 8.3-m telescope. Deep narrowband imaging of the SSA22 field through a 120 A bandpass filter centered at 8150 A was combined with deep multicolor RIz' SuprimeCam broadband imaging, and BVRZ imaging taken with CFHT's CFH12K camera to select high-redshift galaxy candidates. Spectroscopic observations were made using the new wide-field multi-object DEIMOS spectrograph on Keck for 22 of the 26 candidate objects. Eighteen objects were identified as z~5.7 Lyman alpha emitters, and a further nineteenth candidate was identified based on an LRIS spectrum. At the 3.3 A resolution of the DEIMOS spectra the asymmetric profile for Ly alpha emission with its steep blue fall-off can be clearly seen. We use this to describe the distribution of equivalent widths and the continuum color break properties for z~5.7 Ly alpha galaxies compared with foreground objects. The large majority (>75%) of Ly alpha lines have rest frame equivalent widths less than 240 A and can be understood in terms of young star forming galaxies with a Salpeter initial mass function for the stars. We measure the surface density of i'-band dropout galaxies at z~6 through wide field HST/ACS imaging and ultra-deep Keck/DEIMOS spectroscopy. Using deep HST/ACS SDSS-i' (F775W) and SDSS-z' (F850LP) imaging from GOODS-N (200 arcmin^2), we identify 9 i'-drops satisfying an (i'-z')_AB>1.5 selection criterion to a depth of z'_AB=25.6 (corresponding to L*_UV at z~3-4). We use HK' imaging data to improve the fidelity of our sample, discriminating against lower redshift red galaxies and cool Galactic stars. Three i'-drops are consistent with M/L/T dwarf stars. We present ultra-deep Keck/DEIMOS spectroscopy of 10 objects from our combined GOODS-N and GOODS-S i'-drop sample. We detect Lyman-alpha emission at z=5.83 from one object in the GOODS-S field, which lies only 8arcmin away (i.e. 3Mpc/h_70) from the z=5.78 object already confirmed by Bunker et al. (2003). One possible Lyman-alpha emitter at z=6.24 is found in the GOODS-N field (although identification of this spatially-offset emission line is ambiguous). Using the rest-frame UV continuum from our 6 candidate z~6 galaxies from the GOODS-N field, we determine a lower limit to the unobscured volume-averaged global star formation rate at z~6 of (5.4+/-2.2)x10^-4 h_70 M_sun/yr/Mpc^3. We find that the cosmic star formation density in galaxies with unobscured star formation rates 15M_sun/yr/h_70^2 falls by a factor of 8 between z~3 and z~6. Hence the luminosity function of LBGs must evolve in this redshift interval: a constant integrated star formation density at $z>3$ requires a much steeper faint-end slope, or a brighter characteristic luminosity. This result is in agreement with our previous measurement from the Chandra Deep Field South (Stanway et al. 2003), indicating that cosmic variance is not a dominant source of uncertainty., to appear in ApJ; replaced with accepted version

Damped Ly-alpha Systems (DLAs), with N(HI)>2*10^20 cm^{-2}, observed in quasars have allowed us to quantify the chemical content of the Universe over cosmological scales. Such studies can be extended to lower N(HI), in the sub-DLA range (10^193.5. In this paper, we use a homogeneous sample of sub-DLAs from the ESO UVES archives presented in Paper I (Dessauges-Zavadsky et al. 2003), to observationally determine for the first time the column density distribution, f(N), down to N(HI)=10^19 cm^{-2}. The results are in good agreement with the predictions from Peroux et al. (2003). We present the kinematic and clustering properties of this survey. We compare low- and high-ionization transition widths and find that the sub-DLAs properties roughly span the parameter space of DLAs. We analyse the chemical content of this sample in conjunction with abundances from 72 DLAs taken from the literature. We compute the HI column density-weighted mean abundance which is believed to be an indicator of the Universe's metallicity. Although the number statistics is limited, the results suggest a slightly stronger evolution in the sub-DLA range. The evolution we probe is not due to their lower dust content. Therefore these systems might be associated with a different class of objects which better trace the overall chemical evolution of the Universe. Finally, we present abundance ratios of [Si/Fe], [O/Fe], [C/Fe] and [Al/Fe], but it is difficult to decipher whether the observed values are the effect of nucleosynthesis or are due to differential dust depletion. The metallicities are compared with two different sets of models of galaxy evolution in order to provide constraints on the morphology of the absorbers [abridged]., Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures. We present submillimetre continuum observations of a sample of some of the highest redshift quasars currently known, made with the SCUBA bolometer array on the JCMT. The median redshift of the sample is 5.3. Two z>5 objects are strong (6 sigma) detections, with S(850um)>10mJy. A firm (5 sigma) detection is obtained for the z=5.7 quasar SDSS J1044-0125; and SDSS J1306+0356, at z=6.0, is detected with a signal-to-noise approx. 4. For the remainder of the sample we have obtained sensitive (sigma=1.5mJy) upper limits. Submm spectral indices measured for two of the sources are consistent with thermal reradiation from dust, rather than from synchrotron emission. Sensitive 450um upper limits imply that the dust is cool,suggesting large dust masses only 1Gyr after the Big Bang., MNRAS Letters, accepted

We use 29 z>4 quasar spectra to build a homogeneous sample of high-redshift CIV absorbers. We use these data to calculate the number density, n(z), of W_rest(CIV)>0.30 A CIV doublets. We find that n(z) increases with time from z ~ 4.5. In addition, W_rest(CIV)>0.15 A CIV systems are more numerous than the former at all redshifts. On the contrary, n(z) of W_rest(MgII)>0.30 A MgII doublets decreases with time, in agreement with results from studies of LLS number densities. Below z 0.50 A) is found to be approximately constant from z=3.5 to z=2.5 and then to decrease with time. This result suggests that the highest column density absorbers are not sensitive to changes in the ionization continuum., 20 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics. We report the discovery of a redshift z=6.56 galaxy lying behind the cluster Abell 370. The object HCM 6A was found in a narrowband imaging survey using a 118 Angstrom bandpass filter centered at 9152 Ang in the LRIS camera on the 10 m Keck II Telescope. Candidate Lyman alpha emitters were identified by the equivalent width of the emission and the absence of lower wavelength flux in ultradeep broadband images. HCM6A is the first galaxy to be confirmed at redshift z>6, and has W_lambda(observed)=190 Angstroms, flux = 2.7 x 10^-17 erg cm^-2 s^-1. Spectra obtained with LRIS confirm the emission line and the continuum break across the line, and show an asymmetric line profile with steep fall-off on the blue side. Deep Subaru near-infrared CISCO images in J, H and K' which extend the sampled continuum to longer wavelengths give a consistent estimate of the continuum flux density in these line-free regions of 2.6+/-0.7 x 10^-30 erg cm^-2 s^-1 Hz^-1. The line width and strength, asymmetric profile, and very deep spectral break are only consistent with the interpretation of the line as a redshifted Lyman alpha feature. From the detailed lensing model of this cluster, we estimate a lensing amplification of 4.5 for this galaxy, which is located slightly over an arcminute from the center of the cluster, for an unlensed flux of 6.5 x 10^-18 erg cm^-2 s^-1. Quasar absorbers provide a powerful observational tool with which to probe both galaxies and the intergalactic medium up to high redshift. We present a study of the evolution of the column density distribution, f(N,z), and total neutral hydrogen mass in high-column density quasar absorbers using data from a recent high-redshift survey for damped Lyman-α (DLA) and Lyman limit system (LLS) absorbers. Whilst in the redshift range 2 to 3.5, ~90% of the neutral HI mass is in DLAs, we find that at z>3.5 this fraction drops to only 55% and that the remaining 'missing' mass fraction of the neutral gas lies in sub-DLAs with N(HI) 10^(19) - 2 x 10^20 cm^(-2).

We present the first results on the identifications of a medium sensitivity survey (X-ray flux limit 2 × 10-14 erg cm-2s-1 in the 0.5-4.5 keV band) at high galactic latitude (|b| > 20°) carried out with the XMM-Newton X-ray observatory within the AXIS observing programme. This study is being conducted as part of the XMM-Newton Survey Science Centre activities towards the identification of the sources in the X-ray serendipitous sky survey. The sample contains 29 X-ray sources in a solid angle of 0.26 deg2 (source density 113±21 sources deg-2), out of which 27 (93%) have been identified. The majority of the sources are broad-line AGN (19), followed by narrow emission line X-ray emitting galaxies (6, all of which turn out to be AGN), 1 nearby non-emission line galaxy (NGC 4291) and 1 active coronal star. Among the identified sources we find 2 broad-absorption line QSOs (z ∼ 1.8 and z ∼ 1.9), which constitute ∼10% of the AGN population at this flux level, similar to optically selected samples. Identifications of a further 10 X-ray sources fainter than our survey limit are also presented., XB, FJC, MTC and SM acknowledge financial support by the Spanish MCYT under project AYA2000-1690. We describe the InfraRed Data Reduction (IRDR) software package, a small ANSI C library of fast image processing routines for automated pipeline reduction of infrared (dithered) observations. We developed the software to satisfy certain design requirements not met in existing packages (e.g., full weight map handling) and to optimize the software for large data sets (non-interactive tasks that are CPU and disk efficient). The software includes stand-alone C programs for tasks such as running sky frame subtraction with object masking, image registration and coaddition with weight maps, dither offset measurement using cross-correlation, and object mask dilation. Although we currently use the software to process data taken with CIRSI (a near-IR mosaic imager), the software is modular and concise and should be easy to adapt/reuse for other work. The cosmological evolution of neutral hydrogen is an efficient way of tracing structure formation with redshift. It indicates the rate of evolution of gas into stars and hence the gas consumption and rate star formation history of the Universe. In measuring HI, quasar absorbers have proven to be an ideal tool and we use observations from a recent survey for high-redshift quasar absorption systems together with data gathered from the literature to measure the cosmological comoving mass density of neutral gas. This paper describes the performance of XMM-Newton for serendipitous surveys and summarises the scope and potential of the XMM-Newton Serendipitous Survey. The role of the Survey Science Centre (SSC) in the XMM-Newton project is outlined. The SCC's follow-up and identification programme for the XMM-Newton serendipitous survey is described together with the presentation of some of the first results. We present initial results of a new, systematic search for massive star-formation in the host galaxies of the most luminous and probably most massive z>=4 radio-quiet quasars (M(B) 10^13Lsun). A total of 38 z>=4 radio-quiet quasars have been observed at the JCMT using SCUBA at 850microns: 8 were detected (>3sigma) with S(850microns)>~ 10mJy (submillimetre-loud). The new detections almost triple the number of optically selected, submillimetre-loud z>~4 radio-quiet quasars known to date. We include a detailed description of how our quasar sample is defined in terms of radio and optical properties. There is no strong evidence for trends in either detectability or 850microns flux with absolute magnitude, M(B). We find that the weighted mean flux of the undetected sources is 2.0 +/- 0.6mJy, consistent with an earlier estimate of \~3mJy based on more sensitive observations of a sample z>~4 radio-quiet quasars (McMahon et al., 1999). This corresponds to an inferred starformation rate of \~1000Msun/yr, similar to Arp220. The typical starformation timescale for the submillimetre-bright sources is ~1Gyr, 10 times longer than the typical accretion-driven e-folding timescale of ~5x10^7 years. Our 850micron detection of the z=4.4 quasar PSS J1048+4407 when analysed in conjunction with 1.2mm single-dish and interferometric observations suggests that this source is resolved on angular scales of 1-2" (6-12 kpc). In addition, we present a new optical spectrum of this source, identifying it as a broad absorption line (BAL) quasar. The new redshift is outside that covered in a recent CO line search by Guilloteau et al., (1999), highlighting the need for accurate redshifts for the obervation and interpretation of high-redshift line studies., 16 pages, 11 figures. This paper describes the automated optical APM identification of radio sources from the Jodrell Bank - VLA Astrometric Survey (JVAS), as used for the search for distant radio-loud quasars. The sample has been used to investigate possible relations between optical and radio properties of flat spectrum radio sources. From the 915 sources in the sample, 756 have an optical APM identification at a red (e) and/or blue (o) plate,resulting in an identification fraction of 83% with a completeness and reliability of 98% and 99% respectively. About 20% are optically identified with extended APM objects on the red plates, e.g. galaxies. However the distinction between galaxies and quasars can not be done properly near the magnitude limit of the POSS-I plates. The identification fraction appears to decrease from >90% for sources with a 5 GHz flux density of >1 Jy, to, LaTex, 17 pages, 5 gif figures, 4 tables. Accepted for publication in MNRAS. We present a study of the evolution of the column density distribution, f(N,z), and total neutral hydrogen mass in high-column density quasar absorbers using candidates from a recent high-redshift survey for damped Lyman-alpha (DLA) and Lyman limit system (LLS) absorbers. The observed number of LLS (N(HI)> 1.6 * 10^{17} atom/cm^2) is used to constrain f(N,z) below the classical DLA Wolfe et al. (1986) definition of 2 * 10^{20} atom/cm^2. The joint LLS-DLA analysis shows unambiguously that f(N,z) deviates significantly from a single power law and that a Gamma-law distribution of the form f(N,z)=(f_*/N_*)(N/N_*)^{-Beta} exp(-N/N_*) provides a better description of the observations. These results are used to determine the amount of neutral gas contained in DLAs and in systems with lower column density. Whilst in the redshift range 2 to 3.5, ~90% of the neutral HI mass is in DLAs, we find that at z>3.5 this fraction drops to only 55% and that the remaining 'missing' mass fraction of the neutral gas lies in sub-DLAs with N(HI) 10^{19} - 2 * 10^{20} atom/cm^2. The characteristic column density, N_*, changes from 1.6 * 10^{21} atom/cm^2 at z3.5, supporting a picture where at z>3.5, we are directly observing the formation of high column density neutral hydrogen DLA systems from lower column density units. Moreover since current metallicity studies of DLA systems focus on the higher column density systems they may be giving a biased or incomplete view of global galactic chemical evolution at z>3. After correcting the observed mass in HI for the ``missing'' neutral gas the comoving mass density now shows no evidence for a decrease above z=2. We present high signal-to-noise, 5 A resolution (FWHM) spectra of 66 z \ga 4 bright quasars obtained with the 4 m Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory and 4.2 m William Hershel telescopes. The primary goal of these observations was to undertake a new survey for intervening absorption systems detected in the spectra of background quasars. We look for both Lyman-limit systems (column densities N(HI) > 1.6 * 10^{17} atoms cm-2) and damped Ly-alpha systems (column densities N(HI) > 2 * 10^{20} atoms cm-2). This work resulted in the discovery of 49 Lyman-limit systems, 15 of which are within 3000 km s-1 of the quasar emission and thus might be associated with the quasar itself, 26 new damped Ly-alpha absorption candidates, 15 of which have z>3.5 and numerous metal absorption systems. In addition ten of the quasars presented here exhibit intrinsic broad absorption lines., Accepted for publication in Astronomical Journal. We report on the search for distant radio-loud quasars in the Cosmic Lens All Sky Survey (CLASS) of flat spectrum radio sources with S_5GHz>30 mJy. Unresolved optical counterparts were selected from APM scans of POSS-I plates, with e2.0 colours, in an effective area of ~6400 deg^2. Four sources were found to be quasars with z>4, of which one was previously known. This sample bridges the gap between the strong radio surveys with S_5GHz>200 mJy and the samples of radio-weak quasars that can be generated via radio observations of optically selected quasars. In addition, 4 new quasars at z>3 have been found. The selection criteria result in a success-rate of ~1:7 for radio-loud quasars at z>4, which is a significant improvement over previous studies. This search yields a surface density of 1 per 1600 deg^2, which is about a factor of ~15 lower than that found in a similar search for radio-quiet quasars at z>4. FIRBACK is a one of the deepest surveys performed at 170 microns with ISOPHOT onboard ISO, and is aimed at the study of cosmic far infrared background sources. About 300 galaxies are detected in an area of four square degrees, and source counts present a strong slope of 2.2 on an integral "logN-logS" plot, which cannot be due to cosmological evolution if no K-correction is present. The resolved sources account for less than 10% of the Cosmic Infrared Background at 170 microns. In order to understand the nature of the sources contributing to the CIB, and to explain deep source counts at other wavelengths, we have developed a phenomenological model, which constrains in a simple way the luminosity function evolution with redshift, and fits all the existing deep source counts from the mid-infrared to the submillimetre range. We assess the feasibility of detecting star formation in damped Lyman-alpha systems (DLAs) at z>1 through near-infrared spectroscopy using the forthcoming integral field units on 8m-class telescopes. Although their relation to galaxies is not well established, high-z DLAs contain most of the neutral gas in the Universe, and this reservoir is depleted with time - presumably through star formation. Line emission should be an indicator of star formation activity, but searches based on Lyman-alpha are unreliable because of the selective extinction of this resonant UV line. Using more robust lines such as H-alpha forces a move to the near-infrared at z>1. For line emission searches, spectroscopy is more sensitive than imaging, but previous long-slit spectroscopic searches have been hampered by the likelihood that any star forming region in the DLA galaxy disk would fall outside the narrow slit. The new integral field units such as CIRPASS on Gemini will cover sufficient solid angles to intercept these, even in the extreme case of large galactic disks at high redshift. We present the spectra, positions, and finding charts for 31 bright (R4.5. The majority are in the southern sky (dec 2.5) colours from UK or POSSII Schmidt Plates scanned at the Automated Plate Measuring facility in Cambridge. Low resolution (~> 10A) spectra were obtained to identify the quasars, primarily at the Las Campanas Observatory. The highest redshift quasar in our survey is at z ~ 4.8 (R = 18.7) and its spectrum shows a damped Lyman-alpha absorption system at z = 4.46. This is currently the highest redshift damped Lyman-alpha absorber detected. Five of these quasars exhibit intrinsic broad absorption line features. Combined with the previously published results from the first part of the APM UKST survey we have now surveyed a total of ~8000 squ deg of sky i.e. 40% of the high galactic latitude (|b|>30 deg) sky, resulting in 59 optically selected quasars in the redshift range 3.85 to 4.78; 49 of which have z>=4.00., to appear in MNRAS, 14 pages, 5 figures (figures 1 and 2 are large)

The results of a new spectroscopic survey of 66 $z \simgt 4$ quasars for Damped Lyman-alpha absorption systems are presented. The search led to the discovery of 30 new DLA candidates which are analysed in order to compute the comoving mass density of neutral gas in a non-zero lambda Universe. The possible sources of uncertainty are discussed and the implications of our results for the theories of galaxy formation and evolution are emphasized. A subsequent paper will present details of the calculations summarised here and a more extensive explanation of the consequences of our observations for the understanding of the nature of DLAs., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures. We report results from the first 1000 square arc-minutes of the Las Campanas IR survey. We have imaged 1 square degree of high latitude sky in six distinct fields to a 5-sigma H-band depth of 20.5 (Vega). Optical imaging in the V,R,I,and z' bands allow us to select color subsets and photometric-redshift-defined shells. We show that the angular clustering of faint red galaxies (18 < H < 20.5, I - H > 3) is an order of magnitude stronger than that of the complete H-selected field sample. We employ three approaches to estimate $n(z)$ in order to invert w(theta) to derive r_0. We find that our n(z) is well described by a Gaussian with = 1.2, sigma(z) = 0.15. From this we derive a value for r_0 of 7 (+2,-1) co-moving H^{-1} Mpc at = 1.2. This is a factor of ~ 2 larger than the clustering length for Lyman break galaxies and is similar to the expectation for early type galaxies at this epoch., 5 pages, 2 figures, 1 table.
