Abstract: The science guiding the EUREC⁴A campaign and its measurements is presented. EUREC⁴A comprised roughly 5 weeks of measurements in the downstream winter trades of the North Atlantic – eastward and southeastward of Barbados. Through its ability to characterize processes operating across a wide range of scales, EUREC⁴A marked a turning point in our ability to observationally study factors influencing clouds in the trades, how they will respond to warming, and their link to other components of the earth system, such as upper-ocean processes or the life cycle of particulate matter. This characterization was made possible by thousands (2500) of sondes distributed to measure circulations on meso- (200 km) and larger (500 km) scales, roughly 400 h of flight time by four heavily instrumented research aircraft; four global-class research vessels; an advanced ground-based cloud observatory; scores of autonomous observing platforms operating in the upper ocean (nearly 10 000 profiles), lower atmosphere (continuous profiling), and along the air–sea interface; a network of water stable isotopologue measurements; targeted tasking of satellite remote sensing; and modeling with a new generation of weather and climate models. In addition to providing an outline of the novel measurements and their composition into a unified and coordinated campaign, the six distinct scientific facets that EUREC⁴A explored – from North Brazil Current rings to turbulence-induced clustering of cloud droplets and its influence on warm-rain formation – are presented along with an overview of EUREC⁴A's outreach activities, environmental impact, and guidelines for scientific practice. 2. Carcass Physical Features of Malagasy Chicken: Indigenous Race and Starbro Strain

Abstract: This study aims to compare anatomies of Madagascar chickens (indigenous race and Starbro strain). With 8,262 individuals of either indigenous races or Starbro strain chickens raised in a suburban environment, the weights of different pieces of cut as well as the live weights before slaughter were determined. Results showed that breast development presents a positive linear relationship with thigh development for Starbro strain chickens (fast growing broiler) while the relationship between the two traits is negative for the indigenous races (slow growing chicken). Giblet proportions are similar between these two types of chicken. We found that slaughtering at 1,750g live weight (age 120 to 185 days) is profitable for indigenous race chickens (meat yield = 40.16%, breast yield = 18.10%, thigh yield = 20.15% and abdominal fat yield = 1.90%). For the Starbro strain, ideal weight at slaughter is 1,300-1,450 g, corresponding to 49 to 61 days of age (meat yield = 39.63%, breast yield = 17.85%, thigh yield = 20.27% and abdominal fat yield = 1.51%). The physical features of the cuts are similar between indigenous races and Starbro strain chickens.

Abstract: Purpose Survival after metastatic cancer has improved at the cost of increased presentation with metastatic spinal disease. For patients with pathologic spinal fractures and/or spinal cord compression, surgical intervention may relieve pain and improve quality of life. Surgery is generally considered to be inappropriate if anticipated survival is, 3 months. The aim of this international multicenter study was to analyze data from patients who died within 3 months or 2 years after surgery, to identify preoperative factors associated with poor or good survival, and to avoid inappropriate selection of patients for surgery in the future. Patients and Methods A total of 1,266 patients underwent surgery for impending pathologic fractures and/or neurologic deficits and were prospectively observed. Data collected included tumor characteristics, preoperative fitness (American Society of Anesthesiologists advisory [ASA]), neurologic status (Frankel scale), performance (Karnofsky performance score [KPS]), and quality of life (EuroQol five-dimensions questionnaire [EQ-5D]). Outcomes were survival at 3 months and 2 years postsurgery. Univariable and multivariable logistic regression analyses were used to find preoperative factors associated with short-term and long-term survival. Results In univariable analysis, age, emergency surgery, KPS, EQ-5D, ASA, Frankel, and Tokuhashi/Tomita scores were significantly associated with short survival. In multivariable analysis, KPS and age were significantly associated with short survival (odds ratio [OR], 1.36; 95% CI, 1.15 to 1.62; and OR, 1.14; 95% CI, 1.02 to 1.27, respectively). Associated with longer survival in univariable analysis were age, number of levels included in surgery, KPS, EQ-5D, Frankel, and Tokuhashi/Tomita scores. In multivariable analysis, the number of levels included in surgery (OR, 1.21; 95% CI, 1.06 to 1.38) and primary tumor type were significantly associated with longer survival. Conclusion Poor performance status at presentation is the strongest indicator of poor short-term survival, whereas low disease load and favorable tumor histology are associated with longer-term survival. 7. Medieval art in the Northern Netherlands before Van Eyck: New facts and features

Abstract: G. J. Hoogewerff (1884-1963), founder and long-term director of the Royal Netherlandish Institute in Rome, was the first to write a comprehensive study of Northern Netherlandish art: De Noord-Nederlandsche Schilderkunst. In 1936, the first of five volumes appeared covering the medieval period up to the end of the fifteenth century. Since then, several discoveries have altered our view of this lesser-known period of art history. Modern scientific methods have deepened our knowledge and raised different questions regarding many works of art. The broadened scope of potential source material has produced new insights and has clarified production methods. The current volume takes Hoogewerff’s groundbreaking work as a starting point, featuring a fine selection of scholars whose task has been to explore the scientific progress that has been made in the decades since, with special emphasis placed on art works made prior to 1420. Contributions on tomb and architectural sculpture - art forms neglected by Hoogewerff, who concentrated solely on painting - signal emerging trends in art historical research. With its many new illustrations, the volume at hand shows the richness and high quality of medieval art production in the Northern Netherlands before Van Eyck.

Abstract: UNLABELLED The author presents a series of 114 cases of lumbo-sacral fusion with a minimum follow-up of 1 year and a mean of 21.7 months.Since the use of the first transpedicular screws (1963 R. Roy-Camille) spinal instrumentation has considerably eased post-operative care in lumbo-sacral fusion as well as fusion rate. Recently, instrumentation has became more and more rigid. But rigidity has it's limits. Pain as well as poor bone grafting frequently occurs eventhough surgery was performed correctly. This is why the author has developed a concept of flexible transpedicular instrumentation. The aims are: - To avoid stress-shielding of the graftsimplify implantation during surgery - Avoid excessive stress on the bone and adjacent disc - Improved short and long term acceptance of instrumentation - Avoid removal of implants. Some elements guided instrumentation design. Low profile - Ease of removal - restricted number of implants and instruments. The system developed is based on transpedicular screws with 2.5 mm rods. Stainless steel was prefered to Titanium because of it's flexibility. The mechanical results of the first prospective series of 114 cases are studied. Follow up ranges from 12 to 39 months maximum with an average of 21.7 months. 65% of the patients are female. Age ranges from 14 to 89 years old with an average of 50 years.•Pathologies are : 74 cases of discopathy with or without associated disc, 8 cases of degenerative lumbar scoliosis and 32 cases of spondylolisthesis with 13 cases of isthmus lysis and 19 cases of degenerative spondylolisthesis.During the post operative period patients stand between 24 and 48 hours. Walking is allowed with twill corset during the day for the first 3 months.•Length of fixation: In 32 cases it is a floating arthrodesis (L4-5 18 cases, others 14 cases). In 82 cases sacrum is included in the fusion (L3-S1.15 cases, L4-S1.35 cases, L5-S1 20 cases, others 12 cases).• COMPLICATIONS No infections were seen. No phlebitis or pulmonary embolism.•Mechanical complications: They are analysed with an average follow up of 21.7 months and a minimum of 12 months. Screw fractures: Only one case occured at 4 months post op in a L4-5 isthmic spondylolisthesis. Fusion was still obtained within the usual 6 months. Patient went back to work on the 8 th post op month without further complication 14th month post operative. Rod fractures: Fracture of the rod is the demonstration of a pseudarthrosis when occuring between 8 to 12 months post-op. The average pseudarthrosis rate is 3.5% (4 cases). In this series we used two different size of rods. The first group consists of 65 cases with 2 mm diameter rods. The second group consists of 49 cases with 2.5 mm rods. All the pseudarthroses occured in the first group (4 cases). In the second group with an average follow up of 17.2 month no pseudarthroses occured.In 4 cases (3.5%) revision surgery was necessary. Two cases were related to pseudarthrosis and 2 cases to remove instrumentation.Fusion rate in this first prospective series is 96.5%. Rod failure in the first post operative year is the demonstration of pseudarthrosis. On the reverse non failure is a way of assessing fusion without doubt.This homogeneous series demontrates the ability of flexible fixation to obtain a high rate of fusion and a good medium term acceptibility for the patient. Instrumentation was removed only in two cases at patient request.

Abstract: International audience; Parallel stochastic simulations tend to exploit more and more computing power and they are now also developed for General Purpose Graphics Process Units (GP-GPUs). Conse-quently, they need reliable random sources to feed their applications. We propose a survey of the current Pseudo Random Numbers Generators (PRNG) available on GPU. We give a particular focus to the recent Mersenne Twister for Graphics Processors (MTGP) that has just been released. Our work provides empirically checked statuses designed to initialize a particular configuration of this generator, in order to prevent any potential bias introduced by the parallelization of the PRNG.

23. [Optimal use of lamotrigine in clinical practice: results of an open multicenter trial in refractory epilepsy]

Abstract: The study was designed to evaluate optimal use of add-on lamotrigine in the treatment of children and adults with refractory epilepsy of any type. Because of the available evidence from controlled studies, indicating the large spectrum of action of lamotrigine, we designed this prospective study to investigate the efficacy and safety of lamotrigine in everyday clinical practice, to collect useful information on its action in specific epilepsy syndromes and on the clinical results of specific co-medications. We studied 566 patients with a diagnosis of refractory epilepsy of any type currently receiving stable conventional regimens of antiepileptic therapy. Efficacy analysis was limited to 510 patients (388 patients aged 12 years or more, 122 patients aged 2 to 12 years) for which the exact number of seizures could be evaluated. Seizure characteristics were: simple and/or complex partial seizures in 298 (58p. cent) patients, partial seizures with secondary generalisation in 85 (17p. cent), generalised seizures of any type in 226 (44 percent). Syndromic diagnosis was partial symptomatic or cryptogenic epilepsy in 302 patients (59 percent), generalised symptomatic or cryptogenic epilepsy in 116 (23 percent) and idiopathic generalised epilepsy in 50 (10 percent). The percentage of patients who achieved at least 50 percent reduction in the frequency of seizures was evaluated around 40p. cent for all epilepsy categories, and up to 61 percent in idiopathic generalised epilepsies. Response to treatment with lamotrigine was usually obtained by the end of titration (4 weeks) and remained stable at 48 weeks. Thirty-three patients (7 percent) remained seizure-free at 48 weeks. In the group of patients with partial epilepsy, 19p. cent presented a more than 75 percent reduction in seizure frequency. A more than 50 percent reduction in secondary generalisation of partial seizures was observed in 45 percent of the patients. Efficacy results were similar in both the adult and paediatric age groups. They were better for patients receiving valproate co-medication (45 percent of the responders) as compared to other co-medications (37 percent of the responders), suggesting a synergistic action. Safety has been evaluated for all the patients having received lamotrigine (n=566). The incidence of adverse events attributed to lamotrigine was similar to the results of controlled studies, with somnolence reported in 10p. cent, a cutaneous reaction in 8 percent and episodes of transitory diplopia in 8 percent. A cutaneous reaction was more frequent in patients receiving carbamazepine (10 percent) as compared to valproate comedication (5 percent). However, the adverse event was sufficiently serious to necessitate hospitalisation in 3 patients receiving valproate. Dose escalation was not respected in two. Rash was reversible in all of the patients following discontinuation of the drug. The results of this study contribute to the overall understanding of the spectrum of lamotrigine effectiveness across seizure types and epileptic syndromes. Lamotrigine was well tolerated in children and adults.

Abstract: International audience; This article presents a solution to ensure repeatability at software level when using pseudorandom numbers in parallel computations. This is achieved automatically to ease the developer, without inducing performance loss compared to a manual approach thanks to template metaprogramming.Based on the data flow mechanism proposed in a previous work to design and execute algorithmic skeletons, we automate the correct usage of Pseudorandom Number Generator (PRNG) streams. This mechanism makes it possible to assign a PRNG stream to any part of an algorithm, and reaching repeatability can be done by providing the same random number sequence to any parallelizable task, whether it is in a parallel run, regardless of the degree of parallelism, or in a sequential one. Parallelizable tasks can easily be identified within algorithmic skeletons as they provide information about each component of their structure, accessible at compile-time.We illustrate our solution on a metaheuristic to solve an Operational Research (OR) problem that allows several levels of parallelism.

Abstract: New potential High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) cable insulation materials based on nanocomposites are developed in this study. The nanocomposites are produced by blending of polypropylene (PP), propylene-ethylene copolymer (PP–HI) and a modified fumed silica (A-silica) in a concentration of 1 and 2 wt %. The A-silica is successfully modified with (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (APTES) via a solvent-free method, as proven by infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetry and transmission electron microscope mapping. A-silica in the polymer matrix acts as a nucleating agent resulting in an increase of the crystallization temperature of the polymers and a smaller crystal size. Moreover, the silica addition modified the crystals morphology of the unfilled PP/PP-HI blend. The composite containing A-silica with 2 wt% contains bigger-size silica clusters than the composite filled with 1 wt%. The composite with the higher A-silica concentration shows lower space charge accumulation and a lower charge current value. Besides, much deeper traps and lower trap density are observed in the composite with 2 wt% A-silica addition compared to the one with a lower concentration. Surprisingly, the presence of silica clusters with dimensions of more than 200 nm exhibit a positive effect on reducing the space charge accumulation. However, the real cause of this improvement might be due to change of the electron distribution stemming from the amine-amine hydrogen bond formation, or the change of the chain mobility due to the presence of occluded polymer macromolecules constrained inside the high structure silica clusters. Both phenomena may lead to a higher energetic barrier of charge de-trapping, thus increasing the depth of the charge traps. publishedVersion

Abstract: This study compares different polymer-nanofiller blends concerning their suitability for application as insulating thermoplastic composites for High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) cable application. Two polymer blends, PP/EOC (polypropylene/ethylene-octene copolymer) and PP/PP-HI (polypropylene/ propylene - ethylene copolymer) and their nanocomposites filled with 2 wt.% of fumed silica modified with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane were studied. Morphology, thermal stability, crystallization behavior dynamic relaxation, conductivity, charge trap distribution and space charge behavior were studied respectively. The results showed that the comprehensive performance of the PP/PP-HI composite is better than the one of the PP/EOC composite due to better polymer miscibility and flexibility, as well as lower charging current density and space charge accumulation. Nanosilica addition improves the thermal stability and dielectric properties of both polymer blends. The filler acts as nucleating agent increasing the crystallization temperature, but decreasing the degree of crystallinity. Dynamic mechanical analysis results revealed three polymer relaxation transitions: PP glass transition ( $\beta$ ), weak crystal reorientation ( $\alpha 1$ ) and melting ( $\alpha 2$ ). The nanosilica introduced deep traps in the polymer blends and suppressed space charge accumulation, but slightly increased the conductivity. A hypothesis for the correlation of charge trap distribution and polymer chain transition peaks is developed: In unfilled PP/EOC and PP/PP-HI matrices, charges are mostly located at the crystalline-amorphous interface, whereas in the filled PP/EOC/silica and PP/PP-HI /silica composites, charges are mostly located at the nanosilica-polymer interface. Overall, the PP/PP-HI (55/45) nanocomposite with 2 wt.% modified silica and 0.3 wt.% of antioxidants making it $a$ promising material for PP based HVDC cable insulation application with $a$ reduced space charge accumulation and good mechanical properties.

Abstract: The science guiding the EUREC4A campaign and its measurements is presented. EUREC4A comprised roughly 5 weeks of measurements in the downstream winter trades of the North Atlantic – eastward and southeastward of Barbados. Through its ability to characterize processes operating across a wide range of scales, EUREC4A marked a turning point in our ability to observationally study factors influencing clouds in the trades, how they will respond to warming, and their link to other components of the earth system, such as upper-ocean processes or the life cycle of particulate matter. This characterization was made possible by thousands (2500) of sondes distributed to measure circulations on meso- (200 km) and larger (500 km) scales, roughly 400 h of flight time by four heavily instrumented research aircraft; four global-class research vessels; an advanced ground-based cloud observatory; scores of autonomous observing platforms operating in the upper ocean (nearly 10 000 profiles), lower atmosphere (continuous profiling), and along the air–sea interface; a network of water stable isotopologue measurements; targeted tasking of satellite remote sensing; and modeling with a new generation of weather and climate models. In addition to providing an outline of the novel measurements and their composition into a unified and coordinated campaign, the six distinct scientific facets that EUREC4A explored – from North Brazil Current rings to turbulence-induced clustering of cloud droplets and its influence on warm-rain formation – are presented along with an overview of EUREC4A's outreach activities, environmental impact, and guidelines for scientific practice. Abstract: Objective: We reviewed our 8-year experience with en bloc partial and total vertebrectomy for lung cancer invading the spine and report outcome and survival. Methods: Nineteen patients with lung cancers involving the spine underwent en bloc resection. Eleven received induction treatment (chemotherapy, n=5; chemoradiotherapy, n=4; and radiation, n=2). Pneumonectomy was performed in 3 patients, lobectomy in 13 patients, and wedge resection in 3 patients. Hemivertebrectomy was performed in 15 patients, and total vertebrectomy was performed in 4 patients. The median number of resected vertebral bodies was 3 (range, 1-4). Tumor stage was IIIB in 14 patients, IIIA in 1 patient, and IIB in 4 patients (hemivertebrectomy is performed in the case of T3 disease to obtain free margins). Surgical nodal status was N0 in 13 patients, N1 in 3 patients, N2 in 1 patient, and N3 (supraclavicular) in 2 patients. Complete macroscopic and microscopic resection was achieved in 15 (79%) patients. Results: There was no immediate postoperative mortality. Morbidity was observed in 10 patients, including 4 (21%) complications related to the spinal surgery. The median hospital stay was 30 days. Seven patients were alive after a mean follow-up of 26 months (range, 7-74 months). The 1- and 5-year predicted survivals (updated) are 59% and 14%, respectively. Nine local recurrences were observed. Conclusions: En bloc resection of chest tumors with vertebrectomy is technically demanding, and postoperative morbidity should be critically addressed with this aggressive surgical intervention. However, an encouraging long-term survival observed in this series suggests that en bloc resection could be a valid option in selected patients with vertebral involvement of chest tumors.

Abstract: As elsewhere in the Middle East, the Mosul area witnessed a flourishing of Christian art during the thirteenth century. Discussing both art-historical and written sources, this book examines the role of art in expressing the identity of Mosul’s Syrian Orthodox community, and explores the relationship between Christian and Islamic art. Christian-Muslim relations in the Middle East during the medieval period have often been seen in terms of conflict and violent opposition, a presumed dichotomy which focuses almost exclusively on theological differences and fails to take account of the social complexities of daily life. The present study challenges these simplistic views of division along religious lines, seeing the boundaries between the Christian and Muslim communities as areas of intermingling rather than separation. A detailed comparative analysis between Christian and Islamic art provides a far more nuanced picture of extensive cultural interaction, in which the Christians were fully integrated into their environment while still retaining their own exclusive religious and communal identity.
