We present an analytic two-loop calculation within the scalar diquark model of the potential linear and angular momenta, defined as the difference between the Jaffe-Manohar and Ji notions of linear and angular momenta. As expected by parity and time-reversal symmetries, a direct calculation confirms that the potential transverse momentum coincides with the Jaffe-Manohar (or canonical) definition of average quark transverse momentum, also known as the quark Sivers shift. We examine whether initial/final-state interactions at the origin of the Sivers asymmetry can also generate a potential angular momentum in the scalar diquark model., Comment: 20 pages, 6 figures

We present a Machine Learning based approach to the cross section and asymmetries for deeply virtual Compton scattering from an unpolarized proton target using both an unpolarized and polarized electron beam. Machine learning methods are needed to study and eventually interpret the outcome of deeply virtual exclusive experiments since these reactions are characterized by a complex final state with a larger number of kinematic variables and observables, exponentially increasing the difficulty of quantitative analyses. Our deep neural network (FemtoNet) uncovers emergent features in the data and learns an accurate approximation of the cross section that outperforms standard baselines. FemtoNet reveals that the predictions in the unpolarized case systematically show a smaller relative median error than the polarized that can be ascribed to the presence of the Bethe Heitler process. It also suggests that the $t$ dependence can be more easily extrapolated than for the other variables, namely the skewness, $\xi$ and four-momentum transfer, $Q^2$. While twist-2 GPDs allow for a determination of the distribution of partons on the transverse plane, twist-3 GPDs contain quark-gluon correlations that provide information about the average transverse color Lorentz force acting on quarks. One of the challenges of hadronic physics is to fully understand the structure of the proton. In particular, there is nowadays a great interest in the decomposition of its total angular momentum into orbital angular momentum and intrinsic spin, as well as identifying contributions from valence quarks, sea quarks and gluons. The most common decompositions of angular momentum are the Jaffe-Manohar (canonical) and Ji (kinetic) decompositions, which differ in the way contributions are attributed to quarks and gluons. Using perturbation theory, explicit one-loop calculations found that the difference between such decompositions vanishes. We justify within the diquark model in QED that the difference appears at two-loop level, supporting the interpretation of such a difference as originating from the torque exerted by the spectator system on the struck quark., Comment: DIS conference 2019

Generalized parton distributions provide information on the distribution of quarks in impact parameter space. For transversely polarized nucleons, these impact parameter distributions are transversely distorted and this deviation from axial symmetry leads on average to a net transverse force from the spectators on the active quark in a DIS experiment. This force when acting along the whole trajectory of the active quark leads to transverse single-spin asymmetries. For a longitudinally polarized nucleon target, the transverse force implies a torque acting on the quark orbital angular momentum (OAM). The resulting change in OAM as the quark leaves the target equals the difference between the Jaffe–Manohar and Ji OAMs.

We find in one-loop calculations and spectator models that twist-3 generalized parton distributions exhibit discontinuities. In the forward limit, these discontinuities grow into Dirac delta functions which are essential to satisfy the sum rules involving twist-3 parton distribution functions (PDFs). We calculate twist-3 quasi-PDFs as a function of longitudinal momentum and identify the Dirac delta function terms with momentum components in the nucleon state that do not scale as the nucleon is boosted to the infinite momentum frame.

The application of a uniform background magnetic field makes standard quark operators utilising gauge-covariant Gaussian smearing inefficient at isolating the ground state nucleon at nontrivial field strengths. In the absence of QCD interactions, Landau modes govern the quark energy levels. There is evidence that residual Landau mode effects remain when the strong interaction is turned on. Here we introduce novel quark operators constructed from the two-dimensional $U(1)$ Laplacian eigenmodes that describe the Landau levels of a charged particle on a periodic finite lattice. These eigenmode-projected quark operators provide enhanced precision for calculating nucleon energy shifts in a magnetic field. Using asymmetric source and sink operators, we are able to encapsulate the predominant effects of both the QCD and QED interactions in the interpolating fields for the neutron. The neutron magnetic polarizability is calculated using these techniques on the $32^3 \times 64$ dynamical QCD lattices provided by the PACS-CS Collaboration. In conjunction with a chiral effective-field theory analysis, we obtain a neutron magnetic polarizability of $\beta^n = 2.05(25)(19) \times 10^{-4}$ fm$^3$, where the numbers in parentheses describe statistical and systematic uncertainties., Comment: v2:Improved discussion on crucial points, systematics; new version to match published version

International audience; The subleading power of the scattering amplitude for deeply-virtual Compton scattering (DVCS) off the nucleon contains leading-twist and twist-3 generalized parton distributions (GPDs). We point out that in DVCS, at twist-3 accuracy, one cannot address any individual twist-3 GPD. This complication appears on top of the deconvolution issues familiar from the twist-2 DVCS amplitude. Accessible are exclusively linear combinations involving both vector and axial-vector twist-3 GPDs. This implies, in particular, that the (kinetic) orbital angular momentum of quarks can hardly be constrained by twist-3 DVCS observables. Moreover, using the quark-target model, we find that twist-3 GPDs can be discontinuous. The discontinuities however cancel in the DVCS amplitude, which further supports the hypothesis of factorization at twist-3 accuracy.

The magnetic moment and magnetic polarisability of the neutron and proton are investigated using the uniform background-field method and lattice QCD. The results are calculated using $32^3\times64$ dynamical QCD lattices provided by the PACS-CS collaboration through the ILDG. Methods of isolating the energy of the hadrons accounting for Landau level energies are explored. Effective energy shifts are formed from combinations of correlation functions and their efficiency in isolating the magnetic moment and polarisability terms is determined.

The introduction of a uniform background magnetic field breaks three-dimensional spatial symmetry for a charged particle and introduces Landau mode effects. During this meeting at Jefferson Lab we addressed recent theoretical and experimental developments in the spin and the three-dimensional structure of the nucleon (sea quark and gluon spatial distributions, orbital motion, polarization, and their correlations). We consider quark-photon correlations that have been proposed as a source for single-spin asymmetries in inclusive deep-inelastic scattering. A new sum rule for these correlators is derived and its phenomenological consequences are discussed. Several possibilities to relate the $t$-dependence of Generalized Parton Distributions (GPDs) to the distribution of angular momentum in the transverse plane are discussed. Using a simple spectator model we demonstrate that non of them correctly describes the orbital angular momentum distribution that for a longitudinally polarized nucleon obtained directly from light-front wavefunctions., 11 pages, 2 figures

We study the lowest-mass eigenstates of $\phi^4_{1+1}$ theory with both odd and even numbers of constituents. The calculation is carried out as a diagonalization of the light-front Hamiltonian in a Fock-space representation. In each Fock sector a fully symmetric polynomial basis is used to represent the Fock wave function. Convergence is investigated with respect to the number of basis polynomials in each sector and with respect to the number of sectors. The dependence of the spectrum on the coupling strength is used to estimate the critical coupling for the positive-mass-squared case. An apparent discrepancy with equal-time calculations of the critical coupling is resolved by an appropriate mass renormalization., Comment: 18 pages, 8 figures, RevTeX 4.1

We calculate the q q correlation function associated to transverse target lepton-nucleon inclusive deep-inelastic scattering by direct evaluation of the corresponding matrix element. We use the electromagnetic impact parameter potential for a transversely polarized nucleon to define the q q correlation function for each avor in terms of the field components of that avor. The results are compared with the two existing models for the q q correlator. Using the calculated q q correlation function, we estimated the transverse target SSA in IDIS process.

Parton distributions in impact parameter space, which are obtained by Fourier transforming GPDs, exhibit a significant deviation from axial symmetry when the target and/or quark are transversely polarized. Connections between this deformation and transverse single-spin asymmetries as well as with quark–gluon correlations are discussed. The sign of transverse deformation of impact parameter dependent parton distributions in a transversely polarized target can be related to the sign of the contribution from that quark flavor to the nucleon anomalous magnetic moment. Therefore, the signs of the Sivers function for u and d quarks, as well as the signs of quark–gluon correlations embodied in the polarized structure function g 2 can be understood in terms of the proton and neutron anomalous magnetic moments.

For transversely polarized nucleons the distribution of quarks in the transverse plane is transversely shifted and that shift can be described in terms of Generalized Parton Distributions (GPDs). This observation provides a 'partonic' derivation of the Ji-relation for the quark angular momentum in terms of GPDs. Wigner distributions are used to show that the difference between the Jaffe-Manohar definiton of quark orbital angular momentum and that of Ji is equal to the change of orbital angular momentum due to the final state interactions as the struck quark leaves the target in a DIS experiment.

We illustrate, in a semi-classical picture, how the Wilson-line phase factor in the gauge invariantly defined unintegrated parton density can lead to a nonzero single-spin asymmetry (Sivers effect).

The $t$-dependence of generalized parton distrbutions for $x\to 1$ is discussed. We argue that constituent quark models, where the $t$-dependence for $x\to 1$ is through the product $(1-x)t$, are inconsistent. We discuss some constraints on the $x$ and $t$-dependence of $E(x,0,t)$ that arise from positivity bounds in the impact parameter representation. In addition, we show that $E(x,0,0)$ for the nucleon vanishes for $x\to 1$ at least as rapidly as $(1-x)^4$. Finally we provide an inequality that limits the contribution from $E$ to the angular momentum sum rule., Comment: 3 pages

The Fourier transform of generalized parton distribution functions at xi=0 describes the distribution of partons in the transverse plane. The physical significance of these impact parameter dependent parton distribution functions is discussed. In particular, it is shown that they satisfy positivity constraints which justify their physical interpretation as a probability density. The generalized parton distribution H is related to the impact parameter distribution of unpolarized quarks for an unpolarized nucleon, H-tilde is related to the distribution of longitudinally polarized quarks in a longitudinally polarized nucleon, and $E$ is related to the distortion of the unpolarized quark distribution in the transverse plane when the nucleon has transverse polarization., addtl. corrections, 34 pages

Sum rules for twist-3 distributions are reexamined. Integral relations between twist-3 and twist-2 parton distributions suggest the possibility for a $\delta$-function at $x=0$. We confirm and clarify this result by constructing $h_L$ and $h_L^3$ (quark-gluon interaction dependent part of $h_L$) explicitly from their moments for a one-loop dressed massive quark. The physics of these results is illustrated by calculating $h_L(x,Q^2)$ using light-front time-ordered pQCD to ${\cal O}(\alpha_S)$ on a quark target. A $\delta(x)$ term is also found in $e(x,Q^2)$, but not in $g_T(x,Q^2)$, to this order in ${\cal O}(\alpha_S)$., Comment: 18 pages, typos corrected, references added

We present results from a first study of B-mesons that is based on a transverse lattice formulation of light-front QCD. The shape of the Isgur-Wise form factor is in very good agreement with experimental data. However, the calculations yield rather large values for fB and Λ compared to contemporary calculations based on other techniques.

Definitions of orbital angular momentum based on Wigner distributions are used to discuss the connection between the Ji definition of the quark orbital angular momentum and that of Jaffe and Manohar. The difference between these two definitions can be interpreted as the change in the quark orbital angular momentum as it leaves the target in a DIS experiment. The interaction-dependent part of the ${x}^{2}$ moment of the twist-3 polarized parton distribution ${g}_{2}(x)$ is related to the transverse force acting on the active quark in deep-inelastic scattering off a transversely polarized nucleon immediately after it has absorbed the virtual photon. Similarly, the ${x}^{2}$ moment of the chirally odd twist-3 unpolarized parton distribution $e(x)$ can be related to the transverse force experienced by a transversely polarized quark ejected from a transversely polarized nucleon.

In the light-front (LF) formulation of quantum field theory, nontrivial vacuum structure can appear only in zero-modes. Integrating out zero-mode degrees of freedom leads to an effective LF Hamiltonian, which acts only on nonzero-modes and thus has a trivial vacuum, but is nevertheless equivalent to the Hamiltonian in normal coordinates (with nontrivial vacuum) since the nontrivial vacuum structure enters through the coefficients of the eff. LF Hamiltonian.

We present a continuum formulation for {theta} vacua in the massive Schwinger model on the light front, where {theta} enters as a background electric field. The effective coupling of the external field is partially screened due to vacuum polarization processes. We express the correlation between quark transversity and (total) quark angular momentum in terms of the second moment of chirally odd generalized parton distributions. The resulting relation allows to determine how much quarks of a given transversity contribute to the total angular momentum of the nucleon.

A phenomenological model for the quark structure of mesons is considered. The model is based on the tube model for QCD, where all quanta with nonzero transverse momenta are neglected. In the limit that the mass term of the gluons goes to infinity, the model is equivalent to a combination of the {close_quote}t Hooft and Gross-Neveu models and can be solved semianalytically. The model has the properties of confinement, chiral symmetry breaking, and asymptotic freedom and thus resembles QCD in three key respects. We investigate a 3+1 dimensional toy model that exhibits spontaneous breakdown of chiral symmetry, both in a light-front (LF) Hamiltonian and in a Euclidean Schwinger-Dyson (SD) formulation. We show that both formulations are completely equivalent --- provided the renormalization is properly done. For the model considered, this means that if one uses the same transverse momentum cutoff on the SD and LF formulations then the vertex mass in the LF calculation must be taken to be the same as the current quark mass in the SD calculation. The kinetic mass term in the LF calculation is renormalized non-trivially, which is eventually responsible for the mass generation of the physical fermion of the model., 6 pages, REVTEX

Fourier transforms of GPDs describe the distribution of partons in the transverse plane. The 2nd moment of GPDs has been identified by X.Ji with the angular momentum (orbital plus spin) carried by the quarks - a fundamental result that is being widely utilized in the spin decomposition of a longitudinally polarized nucleon. We propose the tube model as a first step in solving the bound state problem in light-front QCD. In this approach we neglect transverse variations of the fields, producing a model with 1+1 dimensional dynamics. We then solve the two, three, and four particle sectors of the model for the case of pure glue SU(3). We study convergence to the continuum limit and various properties of the spectrum., Comment: 29 pages

We compute the light-cone momentum distributions of pions in the nucleon in chiral effective theory using both pseudovector and pseudoscalar pion-nucleon couplings. For the pseudovector coupling we identify \delta-function contributions associated with end-point singularities arising from the pion-nucleon rainbow diagrams, as well as from pion bubble and tadpole diagrams which are not present in the pseudoscalar model. Gauge invariance is demonstrated, to all orders in the pion mass, with the inclusion of Kroll-Ruderman couplings involving operator insertions at the \pi NN vertex. A new method to perform numerical simulations of light-front Hamiltonians formulated on transverse lattices is introduced. The method is based on a DLCQ formulation for the (continuous) longitudinal directions. The hopping term in the transverse direction introduces couplings between fields defined on neighboring (1+1)-dimensional sheets. Within each sheet, the light-cone imaginary time evolution operator is calculated numerically with high precision using DLCQ. The coupling between neighboring sheets is taken into account using an initial value random walk algorithm based on the ensemble projector Monte Carlo technique and a checkerboard decomposition for the time evolution operator. The structure functions of $\ensuremath{\lambda}{\ensuremath{\varphi}}^{4}$ theory in 2+1 dimensions are studied as a trial application. The calculations are performed with up to 64 transverse lattice sites. No Tamm-Dancoff truncations are necessary.

We compare the orbital angular momentum of the 'quark' in the scalar diquark model as well as that of the electron in QED (to order {\alpha}) obtained from the Jaffe-Manohar de- composition to that obtained from the Ji relation. We estimate the importance of the vector potential in the definition of orbital angular momentum.

We present a summary of a recent workshop held at Duke University on Partonic Transverse Momentum in Hadrons: Quark Spin-Orbit Correlations and Quark-Gluon Interactions. The transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions (TMDs), parton-to-hadron fragmentation functions, and multi-parton correlation functions, were discussed extensively at the Duke workshop. In this paper, we summarize first the theoretical issues concerning the study of partonic structure of hadrons at a future electron-ion collider (EIC) with emphasis on the TMDs. We then present simulation results on experimental studies of TMDs through measurements of single spin asymmetries (SSA) from semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering (SIDIS) processes with an EIC, and discuss the requirement of the detector for SIDIS measurements. The dynamics of parton correlations in the nucleon is further explored via a study of SSA in D (`D) production at large transverse momenta with the aim of accessing the unexplored tri-gluon correlation functions. The workshop participants identified the SSA measurements in SIDIS as a golden program to study TMDs in both the sea and valence quark regions and to study the role of gluons, with the Sivers asymmetry measurements as examples. An ultraviolet regularization and renormalization procedure of light-cone perturbation theory which is suitable for a numerical application is discussed. The fourth-order correction to the anomalous magnetic moment of the electron in the light-cone gauge is computed. Several regularizations of the associated light-cone gauge singularity are explored. Local counterterms are constructed to remove the quadratic light-cone divergences from the formalism. Problems of discrete light-cone quantization (DLCQ), beyond one-photon exchange, are also described.

Parton distributions in impact parameter space, which are obtained by Fourier transforming GPDs, exhibit a significant deviation from axial symmetry when the target and/or quark are transversely polarized. Connections between this deformation and single-spin asymmetries as well as with quark-gluon correlations are discussed.
