Future direct imaging missions will primarily observe planets that have been previously detected, mostly via the radial velocity (RV) technique, to characterize planetary atmospheres. In the meantime, direct imaging may discover new planets within existing planetary systems that have bright enough reflected flux, yet with insufficient signals for other methods to detect. Here, we investigate the parameter space within which planets are unlikely to be detected by RV in the near future due to precision limitations, but could be discovered through reflected light with future direct imaging missions. We use the HD 134987 system as a working example, combine RV and direct imaging detection limit curves in the same parameter space through various assumptions, and insert a fictitious planet into the system while ensuring it lies between the RV and imaging detection limits. Planet validity tested through dynamical simulations and retrieval tests revealed that the planet could indeed be detected by imaging while remaining hidden from RV surveys. Direct imaging retrieval was carried out using starshade simulations for two mission concepts: the Starshade Rendezvous Probe that could be coupled with the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, and the Habitable Exoplanet Observatory. This method is applicable to any other systems and high contrast direct imaging instruments, and could help inform future imaging observations and data analysis on the discovery of new exoplanets., 16 pages, 8 figures. A set of simulations with a 3D global climate model are performed to investigate the roles of obliquity and rotation period in the habitability of Earthlike exoplanets. The simulations cover the obliquity–rotation parameter space, from 0° to 90° in obliquity and 1–128 days in rotation period. The simulated global mean temperatures are warmest at 45° obliquity with fast rotations, due to the modification of the greenhouse effect from the spatial redistribution of clouds and water vapor. The slow-moving insolation–cloud mechanism, previously found in simulations with slow rotations and zero obliquity, also produces a cooling trend from intermediate obliquity to high obliquity, with the coldest climate occurring at 90° obliquity for all rotation periods. At low obliquities and fast rotation, persistent snow and sea ice can form, producing cooler temperatures. A Climate Habitability metric is defined, based on temperature and precipitation, which compares well with observations when applied to a simulation using Earth’s obliquity and rotation. Over a wider range of obliquity and rotation period, the Climate Habitability ranges from 10% to 70% of the terrestrial area. Overall, the simulated global mean surface temperature shows a much larger spread across the range of simulated rotation periods at 45° obliquity compared to 0° obliquity. Therefore, we conclude that 3D exoplanet simulations using intermediate obliquities (e.g., 45°) instead of 0° will reveal a wider range of possible climate conditions for specific orbital configurations. In addition, Earth’s climate habitability can increase by 25% if the obliquity increases from 23.°5 to 45°.

Starshade Imaging Simulation Toolkit for Exoplanet Reconnaissance (SISTER) is a versatile tool designed to provide accurate models of the images of exoplanet systems when observed with a starshade positioned to block the light from the host star. SISTER allows one to control a set of observational parameters including: (1) the starshade design, position, orientation, and glint properties; (2) the telescope and optical system pupil, aberrations, bandpass, and throughput including a detector model; (3) the exoplanetary system, including stellar distance and spectral type, parallax and proper motion, planet size, reflection properties, orbital parameters, and exozodiacal dust; and (4) background objects. Additionally, there is a substantial library of built-in plotting software added, but the simulations may be stored on disk and plotted with any other software. We describe SISTER’s algorithms, its operational modules, and how it can be used to generate starshade optical simulations with a high degree of fidelity. We include some imaging examples.

The transit method of exoplanet discovery and characterization has enabled numerous breakthroughs in exoplanetary science. These include measurements of planetary radii, mass-radius relationships, stellar obliquities, bulk density constraints on interior models, and transmission spectroscopy as a means to study planetary atmospheres. The Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) has added to the exoplanet inventory by observing a significant fraction of the celestial sphere, including many stars already known to host exoplanets. Here we describe the science extraction from TESS observations of known exoplanet hosts during the primary mission. These include transit detection of known exoplanets, discovery of additional exoplanets, detection of phase signatures and secondary eclipses, transit ephemeris refinement, and asteroseismology as a means to improve stellar and planetary parameters. We provide the statistics of TESS known host observations during Cycle 1 & 2, and present several examples of TESS photometry for known host stars observed with a long baseline. We outline the major discoveries from observations of known hosts during the primary mission. Some of the most scientifically valuable transiting planets are those that were already known from radial velocity (RV) surveys. This is primarily because their orbits are well characterized and they preferentially orbit bright stars that are the targets of RV surveys. The Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite ({\it TESS}) provides an opportunity to survey most of the known exoplanet systems in a systematic fashion to detect possible transits of their planets. HD~136352 (Nu$^2$~Lupi) is a naked-eye ($V = 5.78$) G-type main-sequence star that was discovered to host three planets with orbital periods of 11.6, 27.6, and 108.1 days via RV monitoring with the HARPS spectrograph. We present the detection and characterization of transits for the two inner planets of the HD~136352 system, revealing radii of $1.482^{+0.058}_{-0.056}$~$R_\oplus$ and $2.608^{+0.078}_{-0.077}$~$R_\oplus$ for planets b and c, respectively. We combine new HARPS observations with RV data from Keck/HIRES and the AAT, along with {\it TESS} photometry from Sector 12, to perform a complete analysis of the system parameters. The combined data analysis results in extracted bulk density values of $\rho_b = 7.8^{+1.2}_{-1.1}$~gcm$^{-3}$ and $\rho_c = 3.50^{+0.41}_{-0.36}$~gcm$^{-3}$ for planets b and c, respectively, thus placing them on either side of the radius valley. Simulations predict that TESS will detect solar-like oscillations in nearly 100 stars already known to host planets. in this paper, we present an asteroseismic analysis of the known red-giant host stars HD;212771 and HD;203949, both systems having a long-period planet detected through radial velocities. These are the first detections of oscillations in previously known exoplanet-host stars by TESS, further showcasing the mission?s potential to conduct asteroseismology of red-giant stars. We estimate the fundamental properties of both stars through a grid-based modeling approach that uses global asteroseismic parameters as input. We discuss the evolutionary state of HD;203949 in depth and note the large discrepancy between its asteroseismic mass (M-* = 1.23 0.15 MM* = 1.00 0.16 M if in the clump) and the mass quoted in the discovery paper (M-* = 2.1 0.1 M), implying a change >30% in the planet?s mass. Assuming HD;203949 to be in the clump, we investigate the planet?s past orbital evolution and discuss how it could have avoided engulfment at the tip of the red-giant branch. Finally, HD;212771 was observed by K2 during its Campaign 3, thus allowing for a preliminary comparison of the asteroseismic performances of TESS and K2. Uncovering the occurrence rate of terrestrial planets within the Habitable Zone (HZ) of their host stars has been a particular focus of exoplanetary science in recent years. The statistics of these occurrence rates have largely been derived from transiting planet discoveries, and have uncovered numerous HZ planets in compact systems around M dwarf host stars. Here we explore the width of the HZ as a function of spectral type, and the dynamical constraints on the number of stable orbits within the HZ for a given star. We show that, although the Hill radius for a given planetary mass increases with larger semi-major axis, the width of the HZ for earlier-type stars allows for more terrestrial planets in the HZ than late-type stars. In general, dynamical constraints allow $\sim$6 HZ Earth-mass planets for stellar masses $\gtrsim 0.7 M_\odot$, depending on the presence of farther out giant planets. As an example, we consider the case of Beta CVn, a nearby bright solar-type star. We present 20 years of radial velocities (RV) from the Keck/HIRES and APF instruments and conduct an injection-recovery analysis of planetary signatures in the data. Our analysis of these RV data rule out planets more massive than Saturn within 10~AU of the star. These system properties are used to calculate the potential dynamical packing of terrestrial planets in the HZ and show that such nearby stellar targets could be particularly lucrative for HZ planet detection by direct imaging exoplanet missions., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in the Astronomical Journal

The coronagraphic instrument (CGI) on the Wide-Field Infrared Survey Telescope (WFIRST) will demonstrate technologies and methods for high-contrast direct imaging and spectroscopy of exoplanet systems in reflected light, including polarimetry of circumstellar disks. The WFIRST management and CGI engineering and science investigation teams have developed requirements for the instrument, motivated by the objectives and technology development needs of potential future flagship exoplanet characterization missions such as the NASA Habitable Exoplanet Imaging Mission (HabEx) and the Large UV/Optical/IR Surveyor (LUVOIR). The requirements have been refined to support recommendations from the WFIRST Independent External Technical/Management/Cost Review (WIETR) that the WFIRST CGI be classified as a technology demonstration instrument instead of a science instrument. This paper provides a description of how the CGI requirements flow from the top of the overall WFIRST mission structure through the Level 2 requirements, where the focus here is on capturing the detailed context and rationales for the CGI Level 2 requirements. The WFIRST requirements flow starts with the top Program Level Requirements Appendix (PLRA), which contains both high-level mission objectives as well as the CGI-specific baseline technical and data requirements (BTR and BDR, respectively)... We also present the process and collaborative tools used in the L2 requirements development and management, including the collection and organization of science inputs, an open-source approach to managing the requirements database, and automating documentation. The tools created for the CGI L2 requirements have the potential to improve the design and planning of other projects, streamlining requirement management and maintenance. Radial velocity (RV) surveys have detected hundreds of exoplanets through their gravitational interactions with their host stars. Some will be transiting, but most lack sufficient follow-up observations to confidently detect (or rule out) transits. We use published stellar, orbital, and planetary parameters to estimate the transit probabilities for nearly all exoplanets that have been discovered via the RV method. From these probabilities, we predict that $25.5^{+0.7}_{-0.7}$ of the known RV exoplanets should transit their host stars. This prediction is more than double the amount of RV exoplanets that are currently known to transit. The Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) presents a valuable opportunity to explore the transiting nature of many of the known RV exoplanet systems. Based on the anticipated pointing of TESS during its two-year primary mission, we identify the known RV exoplanets that it will observe and predict that $11.7^{+0.3}_{-0.3}$ of them will have transits detected by TESS. However, we only expect the discovery of transits for $\sim$3 of these exoplanets to be novel (i.e., not previously known). We predict that the TESS photometry will yield dispositive null results for the transits of $\sim$125 RV exoplanets. This will represent a substantial increase in the effort to refine ephemerides of known RV exoplanets. We demonstrate that these results are robust to changes in the ecliptic longitudes of future TESS observing sectors. Direct imaging of exoplanets presents both significant challenges and significant gains. The advantages primarily lie in receiving emitted and, with future instruments, reflected photons at phase angles not accessible by other techniques, enabling the potential for atmospheric studies and the detection of rotation and surface features. The challenges are numerous and include coronagraph development and achieving the necessary contrast ratio. Here, we address the specific challenge of determining epochs of maximum angular separation for the star and planet. We compute orbital ephemerides for known transiting and radial velocity planets, taking Keplerian orbital elements into account. We provide analytical expressions for angular star--planet separation as a function of the true anomaly, including the locations of minimum and maximum. These expressions are used to calculate uncertainties for maximum angular separation as a function of time for the known exoplanets, and we provide strategies for improving ephemerides with application to proposed and planned imaging missions., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in the Astronomical Journal

Almost every star in our Galaxy is likely to harbor a terrestrial planet, but accurate measurements of an exoplanet's mass and radius demands accurate knowledge of the properties of its host star. The imminent TESS and CHEOPS missions are slated to discover thousands of new exoplanets. Along with WFIRST, which will directly image nearby planets, these surveys make urgent the need to better characterize stars in the nearby solar neighborhood (< 30 pc). We have compiled the CATalog of Stellar Unified Properties (CATSUP) for 951 stars, including such data as: Gaia astrometry; multiplicity within stellar systems; stellar elemental abundance measurements; standardized spectral types; Ca II H and K stellar activity indices; GALEX NUV and FUV photometry; and X-ray fluxes and luminosities from ROSAT, XMM, and Chandra. We use this data-rich catalog to find correlations, especially between stellar emission indices, colors, and galactic velocity. Additionally, we demonstrate that thick-disk stars in the sample are generally older, have lower activity, and have higher velocities normal to the galactic plane. We anticipate CATSUP will be useful in discerning other trends among stars within the nearby solar neighborhood, for comparing thin-disk vs. thick-disk stars, for comparing stars with and without planets, and for finding correlations between chemical and kinematic properties., 21 pages, 14 figures, 6 tables, full CATSUP database included in source data (datafile6.txt) per breakdown in Table 6 and will also be uploaded on Vizier, accepted for publication in ApJ

We present two state-of-the-art models of the solar system, one corresponding to the present day and one to the Archean Eon 3.5 billion years ago. Each model contains spatial and spectral information for the star, the planets, and the interplanetary dust, extending to 50 AU from the sun and covering the wavelength range 0.3 to 2.5 micron. In addition, we created a spectral image cube representative of the astronomical backgrounds that will be seen behind deep observations of extrasolar planetary systems, including galaxies and Milky Way stars. These models are intended as inputs to high-fidelity simulations of direct observations of exoplanetary systems using telescopes equipped with high-contrast capability. They will help improve the realism of observation and instrument parameters that are required inputs to statistical observatory yield calculations, as well as guide development of post-processing algorithms for telescopes capable of directly imaging Earth-like planets., Comment: Accepted for publication in PASP

The field of exoplanetary science has seen discovery rates increase dramatically over recent years, due largely to the data from the Kepler mission. Even so, individual discoveries of planets orbiting nearby stars are very important for studies of characterization and near-term follow-up prospects. The recent discovery of a terrestrial planet candidate orbiting Proxima Centauri presents numerous opportunities for studying a Super-Earth within our own stellar backyard. One of the remaining ambiguities of the discovery is the true mass of the planet since the discovery signature was obtained via radial velocities. Here we describe the effect of orbital inclination on the Proxima Centauri planet, in terms of mass, radius, atmosphere, and albedo. We calculate the astrometric, angular separation, and reflected light properties of the planet including the effects of orbital eccentricity. We further provide dynamical simulations that show how the presence of additional terrestrial planets within the Habitable Zone varies as a function of inclination. Finally, we discuss these effects in the context of future space-based photometry and imaging missions that could potentially detect the planetary signature and resolve the inclination and mass ambiguity of the planet., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in AJ, references updated

As part of NASA's mission to explore habitable planets orbiting nearby stars, this paper explores the detection and characterization capabilities of a 4-m space telescope plus 50-m starshade located at the Earth-Sun L2 point, a.k.a. the New Worlds Observer (NWO). Our calculations include the true spectral types and distribution of stars on the sky, an iterative target selection protocol designed to maximize efficiency based on prior detections, and realistic mission constraints. We carry out both analytical calculations and simulated observing runs for a wide range in exozodiacal background levels ({\epsilon} = 1 - 100 times the local zodi brightness) and overall prevalence of Earth-like terrestrial planets ({\eta}\oplus = 0.1 - 1). We find that even without any return visits, the NWO baseline architecture (IWA = 65 mas, limiting FPB = 4\times10-11) can achieve a 95% probability of detecting and spectrally characterizing at least one habitable Earth-like planet, and an expectation value of ~3 planets found, within the mission lifetime and {\Delta}V budgets, even in the worst-case scenario ({\eta}\oplus = 0.1 and {\epsilon} = 100 zodis for every target). This achievement requires about one year of integration time spread over the 5 year mission, leaving the remainder of the telescope time for UV-NIR General Astrophysics. To characterize the spectrum of Earth viewed as an extrasolar planet, we observed the spatially integrated near-infrared (0.7-2.4 μm) reflection spectrum of Earth via the dark side of the Moon (earthshine). After contributions from the Sun, Moon, and local atmosphere were removed, the resulting spectrum was fitted with a simple model of the reflectivity of Earth. The best model fit is dominated by the reflection spectrum of the atmosphere above medium-altitude water clouds, with lesser contributions from high-altitude ice clouds and from the ground. The spectral features seen are H2O (six strong band structures from 0.7 to 2.0 μm), CO2 (six moderate-strength features from 1.4 to 2.1 μm), O2 (two moderate-strength features at 0.76 and 1.26 μm), and several weak CH4 features. Interpreted as a spectrum of an extrasolar planet, we would confidently conclude that this is a habitable planet, based on the presence of strong water bands. Furthermore, the simultaneous presence of oxygen and methane is a strong indicator of biological activity. We might also conclude that the planet is geologically active, based on the presence of CO2, water, and a dynamic atmosphere (inferred from cirrus clouds, cumulus clouds, and clear-air fractions in our model fit). This suggests that it would be valuable for the Terrestrial Planet Finder-Coronagraph (TPF-C) mission to include near-infrared spectroscopy capability. On the basis of the present work, we suggest that future long-term monitoring of the earthshine would allow us to discern how the globally integrated spectrum changes with planet rotation, cloud cover, and seasons.

We present the results of a 21 cm line study of the environment of two Seyfert galaxies: NGC 6764 and Mrk 1126. Both galaxies are embedded in large and slightly distorted gaseous disks that extend 2-4 times farther than their optical diameters. The asymmetry of the H I distribution and profile is indicative of a weak perturbation, although one that is not strong enough to disturb either the gas or the stars in the inner parts of the galaxies. Whereas Mrk 1126 does have a nearby companion, MCG -02-58-017, the gravitational interaction between the two galaxies is quite weak, and it is unlikely that MCG -02-58-017 is responsible for driving the nuclear activity in Mrk 1126. NGC 6764 has no companions within a radius of 160 kpc. We conclude that the nuclear activity in NGC 6764 and Mrk 1126 is unrelated to the galaxies' immediate environment.

We describe model calculations of optical and near-infrared scattered light images expected from class II T Tauri starsEthe star-plus-disk systems. The parameters controlling the disk shape, size, and mass are chosen to be within theoretically and observationally derived limits. We restrict our models to nearly edge-on disks, since for lower inclinations the central starlight is many orders of magnitude greater than the radiation scattered in the disk. In addition to model Nux images, we calculate spectral energy dis- tributions for pole-on viewing using approximations for Nat and Nared disks. We -nd that direct imaging of edge-on disks can provide only estimates of the scale height at large distances from the central star and an estimate of the disk mass. The images are rather insensitive to the inner disk radius and the degree of Naring, provided the scale height is -xed at large radii. Spectral energy distribution modeling is required to constrain the inner disk radius and the degree of Naring. We apply our models to recent Hubble Space Telescope (HST ) images of HH 30 IRS and investigate whether the scattered light images could have been produced by starlight scattering o† the walls of jet- carved cavities in infalling envelopes associated with the embedded class I sources. We -nd that while the class I infalling envelope plus cavity model qualitatively resembles the HST images, the spatial extent of the model images is too large. Edge-on disk models appear to provide better -ts to the data and enable us to determine the disk scale height at large distances from the central star. However, the assumption of axisymmetry and uniform illumination is clearly inadequate for this variable source. In addition to producing Nux images, our radiation-transfer simulations predict the spatially resolved polar- ization structure of HH 30. We have also performed K-band simulations for HH 30 in anticipation of high-resolution infrared imaging polarimetry. Perhaps the most compelling piece of science and exploration now under discussion for future space missions is the direct study of planets circling other stars. Indirect means have established planets as common in the universe but have given us a limited view of their actual characteristics. Direct observation holds the potential to map entire planetary systems, view newly forming planets, find Earth-like planets and perform photometry to search for major surface features. Direct observations will also enable spectroscopy of exoplanets and the search for evidence of simple life in the universe. Recent advances in the design of external occulters - starshades that block the light from the star while passing exoplanet light - have lowered their cost and improved their performance to the point where we can now envision a New Worlds Observer that is both buildable and affordable with today's technology. In this paper we explore the comparison of scientific capability of external occulters relative to indirect means and to internal coronagraph missions. We conclude that external occulters logically provide the architecture for the next space mission for exoplanet studies.

The orbital light curve of a terrestrial exoplanet will likely contain valuable information about the surface and atmospheric features of the planet, both in its overall shape and hourly variations. We have constructed an empirically based code capable of simulating observations with a New Worlds Observatory of Earth from any orientation, at any time of year with continuously updated cloud and terrain coverage. By simulating these observations over a full orbital revolution we determine that the detection of liquid surface water is possible during crescent phases of planetary systems at high inclinations, while the detection of an obliquity / seasonal terrain change is possible at low inclinations. A New Worlds Observer can accurately determine the rotation rate of the planet more than 50% of the time given only 5 days of observations with a S/N of ~10.
