The mediation analysis revealed that the indirect effects of BPD and severe non-respiratory morbidity on the total PedsQL™ GCS score translated into decrements of 1.73 and 17.56, respectively, at Conclusion The findings suggest that HRQoL is particularly impaired by extremely preterm birth and the concomitant complications of preterm birth such as BPD and severe non-respiratory morbidity.

SummaryWhile some COVID-19 patients maintain SARS-CoV-2-specific serum IgGs for more than 6 months post-infection, others, especially mild cases, eventually lose IgG levels. We aimed to assess the persistence of SARS-CoV-2-specific B cells in patients who have lost specific IgGs and analyzed the reactivity of the immunoglobulins produced by these B cells. Circulating IgG memory B cells specific for SARS-CoV-2 were detected in all 16 patients 1–8 months post-infection, and 11 participants had specific IgA B cells. Four patients lost specific serum IgG after 5–8 months but had SARS-CoV-2-specific-B-cell levels comparable to those of seropositive donors. Immunoglobulins produced after in vitro differentiation blocked receptor-binding domain (RBD) binding to the cellular receptor ACE-2, indicating neutralizing activity. Memory-B-cell-derived IgGs recognized the RBD of B.1.1.7 similarly to the wild-type, while reactivity to B.1.351 and P.1. decreased by 30% and 50%, respectively. Memory-B-cell differentiation into antibody-producing cells is a more sensitive method for detecting previous infection than measuring serum antibodies. Circulating SARS-CoV-2 IgG memory B cells persist, even in the absence of specific serum IgG; produce neutralizing antibodies; and show differential cross-reactivity to emerging variants of concern. These features of SARS-CoV-2-specific memory B cells will help to understand and promote long-term protection.

Background: A considerable body of evidence accumulated especially during the last decade, demonstrating that early nutrition and lifestyle have long-term effects on later health and disease (“developmental or metabolic programming”). Methods: Researchers involved in the European Union funded international EarlyNutrition research project consolidated the scientific evidence base and existing recommendations to formulate consensus recommendations on nutrition and lifestyle before and during pregnancy, during infancy and early childhood that take long-term health impact into account. Systematic reviews were performed on published dietary guidelines, standards and recommendations, with special attention to long-term health consequences. In addition, systematic reviews of published systematic reviews on nutritional interventions or exposures in pregnancy and in infants and young children aged up to 3 years that describe effects on subsequent overweight, obesity and body composition were performed. Experts developed consensus recommendations incorporating the wide-ranging expertise from additional 33 stakeholders. Findings: Most current recommendations for pregnant women, particularly obese women, and for young children do not take long-term health consequences of early nutrition into account, although the available evidence for relevant consequences of lifestyle, diet and growth patterns in early life on later health and disease risk is strong. Interpretation: We present updated recommendations for optimized nutrition before and during pregnancy, during lactation, infancy and toddlerhood, with special reference to later health outcomes. These recommendations are developed for affluent populations, such as women and children in Europe, and should contribute to the primary prevention of obesity and associated non-communicable diseases.

Nous présentons la méthode que nous avons suivie lors de la conception d’un jeu sérieux thérapeutique (Serious Game). Ce jeu a pour objectif de stimuler l’attention de patients présentant les premiers symptômes de la maladie Alzheimer en s’appuyant sur un gameplay de jeu de tir en vue subjective. Notre démarche porte sur l’adaptation pour une cible senior de ce type de jeu habituellement conçu pour des joueurs masculins adolescents et jeunes adultes. Peu d’études existent sur les usages des seniors vis à vis des jeux vidéo ce qui rendait ce travail de conception original et délicat.

Eine wachsende Anzahl wissenschaftlicher und kommerzieller Institutionen beschäftigen sich mit der Nutzbarmachung menschlicher Regungen für eine Effizienzsteigerung in der Mensch-Maschine-Kommunikation. Betrachtet man Affective Computing Systeme aus systemischer Sicht, so ist festzustellen, dass sie eine große Anzahl von hoch spezialisierten Komponenten umfassen, die in den meisten Fällen in Form unabhängiger, eigenständiger Anwendungen implementiert sind. Die nachträgliche Integration solcher Komponenten in ein übergeordnetes System oder ihre Wiederverwendung innerhalb sich ständig verändernder Experimentalsysteme ist mit nicht unbeträchtlichem Aufwand verbunden. Um einen Weg zur Integration und Wiederverwendbarkeit dieser Komponenten aufzuzeigen, wird in diesem Beitrag ein Framework vorgestellt, das den Aufbau experimenteller Systeme zur Sammlung, Analyse und Evaluierung affektbezogener Daten zu unterstützen vermag.

The UK Schmidt Telescope (UKST) of the Anglo-Australian Observatory completed a narrow-band H-alpha plus [NII] 6548, 6584A survey of the Southern Galactic Plane and Magellanic Clouds in late 2003. The survey, which was the last UKST wide-field photographic survey, and the only one undertaken in a narrow band, is now an on-line digital data product of the Wide-Field Astronomy Unit of the Royal Observatory Edinburgh (ROE). The survey utilised a high specification, monolithic H-alpha interference band-pass filter of exceptional quality. In conjunction with the fine grained Tech-Pan film as a detector it has produced a survey with a powerful combination of area coverage (4000 square degrees), resolution (~1 arcsecond) and sensitivity (, 33 pages, 23 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present a new accurate measurement of the HI mass function of galaxies from the HIPASS Bright Galaxy Catalog, a sample of 1000 galaxies with the highest HI peak flux densities in the southern hemisphere (Koribalski et al. 2003). This sample spans nearly four orders of magnitude in HI mass (from log M_HI/M_sun=6.8 to 10.6, H0=75) and is the largest sample of HI selected galaxies to date. We develop a bivariate maximum likelihood technique to measure the space density of galaxies, and show that this is a robust method, insensitive to the effects of large scale structure. The resulting HI mass function can be fitted satisfactorily with a Schechter function with faint-end slope alpha=-1.30. This slope is found to be dependent on morphological type, with later type galaxies giving steeper slopes. We extensively test various effects that potentially bias the determination of the HI mass function, including peculiar motions of galaxies, large scale structure, selection bias, and inclination effects, and quantify these biases. The large sample of galaxies enables an accurate measurement of the cosmological mass density of neutral gas: Omega_HI=(3.8 +/- 0.6) x 10^{-4}. Estrogen receptor (ER)-positive human breast cancer cells are hormonally regulated and are inhibited by retinoids, whereas most ER-negative breast cancer cells are not. Here, we compared retinoid-induced transcriptional activation and growth inhibition in the ER-negative breast cancer cell line MDA-MB-231, stably transfected to express wild-type ER (S30), with that of the ER-positive MCF-7 line and the ER-negative parental line. Retinoids inhibited growth of the ER-expressing S30 clone but not of the parental MDA-MB-231 cells. Unlike a previously reported MDA-MD-231 subclone that was transfected to express a mutated ER (G400V), S30 did not express increased levels of retinoid receptor RNA or protein, nor was there increased binding activity to retinoid-responsive DNA elements. However, stable expression of ER increased retinoid activation of transcription of a retinoic acid (RA) response elements from the low level in MDA-MB-231 to approach the level of MCF-7. The restored growth inhibition and transcriptional regulation by RA were unaffected by treatment with ER agonists or antagonists. Transient expression of ER but not of other nuclear receptors in MDA-MB-231 cells also activated retinoid-induced transcription, showing that this response is specific to ER. Furthermore, the effect of exogenously expressed ER on retinoid response was much greater than that obtained by overexpression of RA receptor alpha and/or retinoid X receptor alpha. Finally, a panel of ER mutants showed that enhancement of retinoid-induced transcriptional activity was dependent on the integrity of the DNA binding domain.
