Abstract

High-altitude Pyrenean lakes are ecosystems far from local pollution sources, and thus they are particularly sensitive to the atmospheric deposition of metals and metalloids. This study aims to quantify the effect of human activity in 18 lakes located in both side of the France–Spain frontier. Sediment cores were collected in summer 2013, sampled at a 1cm resolution and the concentration of 24 elements was measured by ICP-MS. Statistic and chemometric analysis of the results highlights the influence of the geographical position and lithogenic features of each lake basin on trapping pollutants. More than the 80% of the lakes showed values of enrichment factor (EF) above 2 for at least one of the elements investigated in at least one core interval, which corroborates the existence of historical anthropogenic inputs of elements in the studied area. The results demonstrate the natural origin of As and Ti in Pyrenees, together with the significant anthropogenic inputs of Cd, Pb, Sb and Sn from ancient times. The data set points mining activities as the main historical source of pollution and illustrate the large impact of the industrial revolution. The regional variability could reflect also differential long-range transport, followed by dry or wet deposition.

Abstract

International audience; Jezero crater was chosen for exploration and sample collection by Perseverance due to its history as a lake with river deltas, its diverse mineralogy, including carbonates observed from orbit, and as a potential site to calibrate crater counting ages with radiometric dates of samples to be returned to Earth. This presentation focuses on the results of SuperCam, which uses LIBS for remote elemental chemistry, VISIR and remote Raman spectroscopy for mineral compositions and alteration, includes a microphone, and performs high-resolution imaging for textures and morphology. In the first year after landing, SuperCam and other instruments were used to explore Jezero’s floor. We found that all of the floor units are igneous, with lava flows comprising the upper units as part of the Máaz formation, while the lower formation, Séítah, is an olivine cumulate, produced by gravitational settling of olivine crystals in a large melt body. Artuby ridge, just outside the SW portion of Séítah and stratigraphically just above it, contains up to 60% pyroxene. The upper portions of the Máaz formation are more enriched in plagioclase, with the uppermost Ch’al member having the most evolved composition, along with the Content member, pitted rocks directly overlying the main cumulate portion of Séítah. After exploring the floor, Perseverance drove to the delta formation and began a walk-about style of observations starting at Enchanted Lake, just below an arm of the delta formation, and then moving into Hawksbill Gap, climbing 18 m in elevation between Devil’s Tanyard, Sunset Hill, and Hogwallow flats. Delta compositions initially displayed higher phyllosilicate contents, identified by absorptions at 1.4, 1.9, and 2.3 µm, and by higher LIBS H peak areas. Farther up, compositions changed to sulfur-bearing in lower locations within the continuous fine-grained light-toned strata (e.g., Pignut Mountain, Sol 463) and carbonate-rich in upper strata. Veins were observed, consisting of Mg-Fe carbonate (Elder Ridge, Sol 459) and anhydrite (Reid’s Gap, Sol 466). The sulfates suggest precipitation of these salts at a later stage, as the lake was evaporating. Carbonates and sulfates in veins in different locations indicate that groundwater was active in the lithified sediments and had significantly different chemistry at different intervals.

Abstract

Before Perseverance, Jezero crater's floor was variably hypothesized to have a lacustrine, lava, volcanic airfall, or aeolian origin. SuperCam observations in the first 286 Mars days on Mars revealed a volcanic and intrusive terrain with compositional and density stratification.The dominant lithology along the traverse is basaltic, with plagioclase enrichment in stratigraphically higher locations. Stratigraphically lower, layered rocks are richer in normative pyroxene. The lowest observed unit has the highest inferred density and is olivine-rich with coarse (1.5 millimeters) euhedral, relatively unweathered grains, suggesting a cumulate origin. This is the first martian cumulate and shows similarities to martian meteorites, which also express olivine disequilibrium. Alteration materials including carbonates, sulfates, perchlorates, hydrated silicates, and iron oxides are pervasive but low in abundance, suggesting relatively brief lacustrine conditions. Orbital observations link the Jezero floor lithology to the broader Nili-Syrtis region, suggesting that density-driven compositional stratification is a regional characteristic. Abstract

Una de las principales razones por las que los gases de efecto invernadero han aumentado, se debe a la actividad humana a través del uso de combustibles fósiles para mantener los requerimientos sociales. La contaminación y la escasez de los combustibles fósiles se han convertido en un gasto ambiental y económico para la sociedad. Este proyecto busca darle una solución energética de manera óptima y que resulte más económica a largo plazo al problema descrito con anterioridad al sistema de transporte rápido masivo de Barranquilla. De esta forma se reducirían los gases de efecto invernadero que contribuyen a la contaminación en la ciudad. Se seleccionara un vehículo que cumpla con las condiciones y requisitos de transporte para Barranquilla, que además tenga un índice de contaminación menor que los utilizados en la actualidad, buses diésel. Siguiente, se diseñara el sistema de recarga para los autobuses y se explorara la utilización de energías no convencionales para la energía requerida por las baterías de los vehículos híbridos. Como resultados esperados del proyecto se espera un impulso al desarrollo e inversión en tecnologías asociadas a los vehículos eléctricos, los cuales en el momento resultarían costosos pero con su implementación se reduciría el precio haciéndose asequible para los sistemas de transporte masivo. One of the main reasons why greenhouse gases have increased is due to human activity through the use of fossil fuels to maintain social requirements. Pollution and the scarcity of fossil fuels have become an environmental and economic expense for society. This project seeks to provide an energy solution in an optimal way and that is more economical in the long term to the problem described earlier to the mass rapid transport system of Barranquilla. This would reduce the greenhouse gases that contribute to pollution in the city. It will select a vehicle that meets the conditions and transportation requirements for Barranquilla, which also has a lower contamination index than those currently used, diesel buses. Next, the recharging system for buses will be designed and the use of unconventional energy for the energy required by the batteries of the hybrid vehicles will be explored. As results of the project is expected to boost development and investment in technologies associated with electric vehicles, which at the time would be costly but with its implementation would reduce the price making it affordable for mass transit systems.

Abstract

International audience; El proceso que va del descubrimiento de una pieza arqueológica a su musealización pasa necesariamente por una fase de restauración. En el caso de piezas de naturaleza metálica la restauración puede comportar la eliminación mecánica de las costras de degradación más externas. Los fragmentos eliminados contienen una gran cantidad de información que, si es extrapolada, puede ayudar a los restauradores a elegir los tratamientos más adecuados de conservación. Por esta razón, con el presente trabajo se pretende desarrollar un nuevo método que permita semicuantificar de manera rápida y fiable las fases de corrosión contenidas en los residuos de limpieza de hierros arqueológicos. Para realizar el trabajo ha sido utilizado el software PALME para el tratamiento de los resultados obtenidos mediante espectroscopia infrarroja (FTIR) sobre mezclas de corrosiones puras a concentración conocida. Gracias a los resultados obtenidos se puede afirmar que el método desarrollado, una vez optimizado, representará una herramienta útil para la rápida semicuantificación de las corrosiones que normalmente afectan los hierros arqueológicos.

Abstract

International audience; Weathering steel was designed to resist against the atmospheric impact due to the development of a characteristic rust layer that protects the metal by reducing the corrosion rate. This rust layer is formed by different iron (oxy-hydr)oxides that acts as a barrier and provides the protective ability. In order to check the conservation state trough the protective capability, it is necessary to calculate the so-called protective ability index (PAI). It mainly takes into account the ratio (α/γ) between the mass of goethite (α-FeOOH) and lepidocrocite (γ-FeOOH), present in the rust layer of weathering steel. Raman spectroscopy, apart from a qualitative technique, is recently becoming a semi quantitative approach. Therefore, it is a valuable tool for the calculation of the mentioned index. This paper is a widening of a previous work in which it was uncovered a problem in different weathering steel sculptures which are exposed to a Cl− and SO2-rich urban atmosphere because they present different esthetical problems on their surfaces, such as detachments of steel chips, discolorations and irregularities. In order to relate these problems on the surface and the rust layer composition, PAI calculations were performed from the phase identification obtained from Raman imaging and using spectra decomposition to quantify each compounds. Although goethite and lepidocrocite were the most commonly detected compounds, hematite, akaganeite and magnetite were also identified. Hematite is a sub product formed in rich SO2 atmospheres; therefore, a PAI with its content is proposed. Protective indexes obtained for the different artworks exposed in different places provide quantitative clues for the conservation diagnosis of weathering steel structures.
