At the center of our research is the 'Paprykarz' (Paprikash—fish and rice sandwich pate), local fish food which is an example of the relations and networks in a field of maritime culture. These relations address both the question of the social memory of national fishing industry and a regional identity. Sold originally in a tin, ‘Paprykarz’ was an export hit in the 1980s, In fact, it was a domesticated version of a Senegalese dish, called Tiep bou dienn Sénégalais, Thieboudienne, The story of paprikash is an unusually interesting one for those researching ethnic food, due to the complexity of its case. The many intersecting narratives about paprikash include stories from the food and fisheries industries; stories of political transformation, domestication, Soviet colonialism, and Creolisation; stories, too, about creating local identity, about nutritional habits, and the idea of slow food.

The time of COVID-19 lockdown has given us an opportunity to practice experimental methodologies of cultural geography. I use early-20th-century Polish guides to Rome, Italy, to provide exercises in auto-geography. The aim of these exercises is to enrich the practice of cultural geography by opening up to self-exploration and combining lectures and imagination with distanced spaces. These exercises relate to finding the hidden narrator, understanding locational formulations, and assessing the role of our own assumptions and memories in studying urban narratives. Although travel guides are typically read as sources of historical and cultural knowledge, I propose also reading them to better understand the relationship between reading practice and the researcher’s prior knowledge.

The article explores problem of exposing walking research methods (WRMs) to misuse, criticism and framing as “non-scientific”. According to authors, WRMs are framed as “non-scientific”: (1) by researchers and their rigorous top-down approach, (2) by research participants and their lack of interest in providing quantitative indicators, (3) by public authorities as they are can be interested in simple answers to non-scientific questions. The problem of misuses and framing of the WRMs as “non-scientific” is discussed by referring to two examples: using WRMs to support art projects and local fieldwork activities and adapting WRMs as a diagnostic tool for the local policy projects such as the development of strategies for urban development, pedestrian policy-making, and urban renewal projects.

Although complaining is well-recognized by psychologists and economists, its political potential is still far from obvious. Dissatisfaction with social services, non-democratic relationships between authorities and citizens, and the ignoring of significant social identities are communicated in everyday conversations. Even when complaining is perceived as ‘grumbling’, the informal nature of the communicated inconveniences may be more important than the formal participatory instruments through which collective claims are placed. Criticism and communication of grievances can lead to political activism only in particular circumstances. This article provides a conceptual frame of complaining enhancing into political claims. The proposed frame distinguishes between inactive complaining and complaining aimed at making a change, which may be reinforced or reduced. The essential role in this process of complaining is given to the objects of complaints/addresses, and agents such as media, politicians, institutions such as NGOs, social movements, whistleblowers, activists and leaders.

Celem artykulu jest charakterystyka najbardziej typowych problemow spolecznych gmin doświadczających suburbanizacji. Na podstawie rezultatow badania pt. Diagnoza problemow spolecznych w Gminie Dobra, przeprowadzonego w 2015 roku, autorzy zidentyfikowali najistotniejsze zjawiska o charakterze problemow spolecznych w gminie. Jako „stare problemy spoleczne” autorzy wskazują dysfunkcje istniejące przed naplywem migracyjnym, bedące udzialem i doświadczane przez „zasiedzialych” mieszkancow gminy. Problemy „nowe” natomiast pojawiają sie w miejscowościach doświadczających intensywnego wzrostu liczby mieszkancow i przeksztalcen przestrzeni, wynikające ze szczegolnej sytuacji suburbanizacji.

W niniejszym tekście przedstawiono przegląd wybranych badań opisujących polityczne znaczenia estetyki karnawału. Celem artykułu było wskazanie możliwych konsekwencji karnawalizacji protestu, począwszy od stosowania karnawałowego repertuaru w celu generowania zainteresowania mediów i mobilizowania uczestników, a skończywszy na efekcie osłabienia politycznej wymowy tych ruchów społecznych, które wykorzystują opisywane w tekście taktyki. Zdaniem autora w wielu przypadkach niemożliwe jest oddzielenie stosowanej taktyki od przesłania ruchów społecznych, dlatego też badanie skuteczności stosowania karnawalizacji protestu powinno uwzględniać także przeobrażenia tożsamości zbiorowej i celów definiowanych przez protestujących.

Authors present an estimation of articulo-trochanteric-distance (ATD) and ATD index in patients with Perthes disease and if there is any correlation between ATD and ATD index and age at the onset, gender, type of treatment, Herring and Stulberg classification. The study population consisted of 242 patients (35 female and 207 male) who had reached skeletal maturity at last follow up. The mean age at the onset of symptoms was 7 years and 4 months. All patients were treated by containment methods (bed rest and traction in abduction, brace, Petri cast, varus osteotomy, Salter osteotomy and shelf operation). ATD was estimated according to the Edgren methods and ATD index was calculated as relation ATD on Perthes site to ATD in normal joint. The late results were classified according to the Stulberg classification. Statistical analysis did not revealed any correlation between the age at the onset, gender and ATD index and ATD during last follow up. Both parameters decreased with poor results according to the Stulberg classifications. ATD index and ATD were statistically significant less after surgical treatment than after non-operative treatment. The same relations were seen between patients with leg length discrepancy (LLD) and without LLD. Patients in Herring group A had statistically significant bigger both parameters than patients in group B, C and patients in Herring group B than C. Articulo-trochanteric-distance and ATD index decreased during follow up and ATD decreased also in normal joint. In our opinion ATD index is a more reliable radiological parameter than ATD. ATD index decreases with bigger necrosis of the femoral head and poor result according to the Stulberg classification. This parameter is an evidence of the dysfunction proximal femoral growth plate in patients with LLD. The most decreased ATD index was observed after surgical treatment. There was no correlation between the age at the onset, gender and ATD index at last follow up.
