Abstract

This conceptual design report provides a detailed account of the European Spallation Source neutrino Super Beam (ESS$\nu$SB) feasibility study. This facility has been proposed after the measurements reported in 2012 of a relatively large value of the neutrino mixing angle $\theta_{13}$, which raised the possibility of observing potential CP violation in the leptonic sector with conventional neutrino beams. The measured value of $\theta_{13}$ also privileges the $2^{nd}$ oscillation maximum for the discovery of CP violation instead of the more typically studied $1^{st}$ maximum. The sensitivity at this $2^{nd}$ oscillation maximum is about three times higher than at the $1^{st}$ one, which implies a reduced influence of systematic errors. Working at the $2^{nd}$ oscillation maximum requires a very intense neutrino beam with an appropriate energy. The world's most intense pulsed spallation neutron source, the European Spallation Source (ESS), will have a proton linac operating at 5\,MW power, 2\,GeV kinetic energy and 14~Hz repetition rate (3~ms pulse duration, 4\% duty cycle) for neutron production. In this design study it is proposed to double the repetition rate and compress the beam pulses to the level of microseconds in order to provide an additional 5~MW proton beam for neutrino production. The physics performance has been evaluated for such a neutrino super beam, in conjunction with a megaton-scale underground water Cherenkov neutrino detector installed at a distance of 360--550\,km from ESS. The ESS proton linac upgrades, the accumulator ring required for proton-pulse compression, the target station design and optimisation, the near and far detector complexes, and the physics potential of the facility are all described in this report. The ESS linac will be operational by 2025, at which point the implementation of upgrades for the neutrino facility could begin., Comment: 216 pages

Abstract

In this paper, we present the physics performance of the ESSnuSB experiment in the standard three flavor scenario using the updated neutrino flux calculated specifically for the ESSnuSB configuration and updated migration matrices for the far detector. Taking conservative systematic uncertainties corresponding to a normalization error of $$5\%$$ 5 % for signal and $$10\%$$ 10 % for background, we find that there is $$10\sigma $$ 10 σ $$(13\sigma )$$ ( 13 σ ) CP violation discovery sensitivity for the baseline option of 540 km (360 km) at $$\delta _\mathrm{CP} = \pm 90^\circ $$ δ CP = ± 90 ∘ . The corresponding fraction of $$\delta _\mathrm{CP}$$ δ CP for which CP violation can be discovered at more than $$5 \sigma $$ 5 σ is $$70\%$$ 70 % . Regarding CP precision measurements, the $$1\sigma $$ 1 σ error associated with $$\delta _\mathrm{CP} = 0^\circ $$ δ CP = 0 ∘ is around $$5^\circ $$ 5 ∘ and with $$\delta _\mathrm{CP} = -90^\circ $$ δ CP = - 90 ∘ is around $$14^\circ $$ 14 ∘ $$(7^\circ )$$ ( 7 ∘ ) for the baseline option of 540 km (360 km). For hierarchy sensitivity, one can have $$3\sigma $$ 3 σ sensitivity for 540 km baseline except $$\delta _\mathrm{CP} = \pm 90^\circ $$ δ CP = ± 90 ∘ and $$5\sigma $$ 5 σ sensitivity for 360 km baseline for all values of $$\delta _\mathrm{CP}$$ δ CP . The octant of $$\theta _{23}$$ θ 23 can be determined at $$3 \sigma $$ 3 σ for the values of: $$\theta _{23} > 51^\circ $$ θ 23 > 51 ∘ ($$\theta _{23} < 42^\circ $$ θ 23 < 42 ∘ and $$\theta _{23} > 49^\circ $$ θ 23 > 49 ∘ ) for baseline of 540 km (360 km). Regarding measurement precision of the atmospheric mixing parameters, the allowed values at $$3 \sigma $$ 3 σ are: $$40^\circ< \theta _{23} < 52^\circ $$ 40 ∘ < θ 23 < 52 ∘ ($$42^\circ< \theta _{23} < 51.5^\circ $$ 42 ∘ < θ 23 < 51 . 5 ∘ ) and $$2.485 \times 10^{-3}$$ 2.485 × 10 - 3 eV$$^2< \varDelta m^2_{31} < 2.545 \times 10^{-3}$$ 2 < Δ m 31 2 < 2.545 × 10 - 3 eV$$^2$$ 2 ($$2.49 \times 10^{-3}$$ 2.49 × 10 - 3 eV$$^2< \varDelta m^2_{31} < 2.54 \times 10^{-3}$$ 2 < Δ m 31 2 < 2.54 × 10 - 3 eV$$^2$$ 2 ) for the baseline of 540 km (360 km).

Abstract

Backward proton and $\pi^-$ production has been studied in $\nu_{\mu}CC$ interactions with carbon nuclei. Detailed analyses of the momentum distributions, of the production rates, and of the general features of events with a backward going particle, have been carried out in order to understand the mechanism producing these particles. The backward proton data have been compared with the predictions of the reinteraction and the short range correlation models.

Abstract

We have studied the muon neutrino and antineutrino quasi-elastic (QEL) scattering reactions ($\nu_\mu n\to \mu^- p$ and $\bar{\nu}_\mu p\to \mu^+ n$) using a set of experimental data collected by the NOMAD collaboration. We have performed measurements of the cross-section of these processes on a nuclear target (mainly Carbon) normalizing it to the total $\nu_\mu$ ($\bar{\nu}_\mu$) charged current cross-section. The results for the flux averaged QEL cross-sections in the (anti)neutrino energy interval 3-100 GeV are $\sigma^{qel}_{\nu_\mu} = (0.92 \pm 0.02 (stat) \pm 0.06 (syst))\times 10^{-38} \cm^2$ and $\sigma{qel}_{\bar{\nu}_\mu} = (0.81 \pm 0.05 (stat) \pm 0.08 (syst))\times 10^{-38} \cm^2$ for neutrino and antineutrino, respectively. The axial mass parameter $M_A$ was extracted from the measured quasi-elastic neutrino cross-section. The corresponding result is $M_A = 1.05 \pm 0.02 (stat) \pm 0.06 (syst) GeV$. It is consistent with the axial mass values recalculated from the antineutrino cross-section and extracted from the pure $Q^2$ shape analysis of the high purity sample of $\nu_\mu$ quasi-elastic 2-track events, but has smaller systematic error and should be quoted as the main result of this work. Our measured $M_A$ is found to be in good agreement with the world average value obtained in previous deuterium filled bubble chamber experiments. The NOMAD measurement of $M_A$ is lower than those recently published by K2K and MiniBooNE collaborations. However, within the large errors quoted by these experiments on $M_A$, these results are compatible with the more precise NOMAD value., Comment: 26 pages, 18 figures, submitted to Eur.Phys.J.C

Abstract

A search was made for a new light gauge boson $X$ which might be produced in $\pi^{0}\to\gamma + X$ decay from neutral pions generated by 450-GeV protons in the CERN SPS neutrino target. The X's would penetrate the downstream shielding and be observed in the NOMAD detector via the Primakoff effect, in the process of $X \to\pi^{0}$ conversion in the external Coulomb field of a nucleus. With $1.45\times10^{18}$ protons on target, 20 candidate events with energy between 8 and 140 GeV were found from the analysis of neutrino data. This number is in agreement with the expectation of 18.1$\pm$2.8 background events from standard neutrino processes. A new 90% C.L. upper limit on the branching ratio $Br(\pi^{0}\to\gamma + X)< (3.3 to 1.9) \times10^{-5}$ for $X$ masses ranging from 0 to 120 MeV/c^2 is obtained., Comment: 15 pages, LaTex, 6 eps figures included, submitted to Physics Letters B

Abstract

Anorexia nervosa is a psychiatric disorder with a prevalence of circa five percent in young women population, with an increased tendency of frequent occurrence over the past twenty years. Although the diagnosis is relatively simple and straightforward, the treatment of these patients is often time-consuming and challenging for clinicians, as the occurrence of malignant and persistent forms of the condition is becoming ever more common. Resistant clinical diagnoses usually arise through comorbidity with other psychiatric disorders. Counted among them, first of all, are personality disorders. A.N. is treated by means of using various groups of psychopharmacological drugs in combination with psychotherapeutic treatment, with intention to establish a favorable therapeutic relationship and stability of the patient. Psychotherapeutic part of the treatment gains in importance when the condition occurs in comorbidity with personality disorders. Supportive treatment measures, namely aggressive rehydration, caloric values compensation via probes and and catheters are often an integral part of the treatment, and become particularly important when faced with treating malignant forms of the condition. Presented case will show that the malignant forms of Anorexia Nervosa can only be understood through insight into the psychological foundations of personality and frequently accompanying disorders on Axis II (DSM-IV). The female patient in question displays a base borderline personality structure with dominant narcissistic tendencies which prompted the development of a malignant form of the condition and thus made the treatment significantly more difficult. Only early intervention with emphasis on the psychotherapy treatment can ensure a better long-term prognosis in such cases.

8. Ponašanje pesticida u vodenoj sredini. II. hidroliza diklorvosa u modelnom sistemu i u riječnoj vodi

Abstract

An attempt has been made to elucidate the unusually fast decay of dichlorvos in the water of the Kupa river as compared to the behaviour of this pesticide in other river waters. The effects of pH, temperature, different ion species, organic components and concentration of dichlorvos on the decay rate were tested in a model system. The concentration of hydrogen ions and temperature were found to be rate determining. Different ion species could have a considerable effect on the rate of hydrolysis of dichlorvos but only if present in large quantities., Zapažena je vrlo brza razgradnja diklorvosa u vodi rijeke Kupe za razliku od ponašanja tog pesticida u vodi rijeke Save. U modelnom sustavu ispitani su utjecaji temperature, pH, različitih ionskih vrsta, organskih komponenti, te koncentracije diklorvosa na brzinu razgradnje diklorvosa. Temperatura i pH su faktori koji znatno utječu na brzinu razgradnje dok različite ionske vrste mogu imati značajan utjecaj samo ako su im koncentracije vrlo visoke. Usporedbom rezultata provedenih kemijskih analiza vode rijeka Save i Kupe nije nađeno nikakvo značajno odstupanje te je stoga teško izdvojiti ijedan ispitani kemijski pokazatelj kao osnovni uzrok brze razgradnje diklorvosa u vodi rijeke Kupe. Nasuprot tome biološki i bakteriološki profili ovih rijeka znatno se razlikuju te bi se brza razgradnja diklorvosa u vodi rijeke Kupe mogla objasniti njezinom većom moći samoočišćenja.

9. Ponašanje pesticida u vodenoj okolini. I. Postojanost nekih organskofosfornih pesticida u riječnoj vodi

Abstract

Uspoređena je efikasnost akumuliranja organskofosfornih spojeva, koji su kao mikropolutanti prisutni u riječnim vodama, metodom ekstrakcije s organskim otapalima i adsorpcijom na mikrokoloni aktivnog ugljena. Postupak adsorpcije i eluiranja s kolone aktivnog ugljena primijenjen je za određivanje postojanosti organskofosfornih pesticida - diklorvosa, malationa i parationa - u riječnoj vodi različitog stupnja čistoće. Koncentracija svih dodanih spojeva tokom vremena opada u svim uzorcima riječnih voda, ali na različite načine, dok se stajanjem u redestiliranoj vodi bitno ne mijenja količina niti jednog spoja. Međutim, u usporedbi s objavljenim vremenima poluraspada od 0,7-28 sati spojevi prisutni u koncentracijama 60-100 µg/l su se pokazali relativno postojanima. Vremena poluraspada su u svim uzorcima voda bila dulja od 72 sata s još mnogo sporijim daljnjim opadanjem. Izuzetak je brza razgradnja diklorvosa u vodi rijeke Kupe. Diklorvos nije detektiran ni u filtratu nakon propuštanja vode kroz aktivni ugljen ni u talogu nastalom stajanjem vode. Totalni ugljik i totalni organski ugljik, određeni kao parametri onečišćenja vode, pokazali su se nedovoljnim za objašnjenje te činjenice. Razrada postupka za određivanje organskofosfornih pesticida nužno se mora povezati sa sistematskim ispitivanjem svih činilaca koji utječu na stupanj njihove hidrolize i što potpunijom analizom vode.

Abstract

We report on a search for heavy neutrinos ($\nus$) produced in the decay $D_s\to \tau \nus$ at the SPS proton target followed by the decay $\nudecay$ in the NOMAD detector. Both decays are expected to occur if $\nus$ is a component of $\nu_{\tau}$.\ From the analysis of the data collected during the 1996-1998 runs with $4.1\times10^{19}$ protons on target, a single candidate event consistent with background expectations was found. This allows to derive an upper limit on the mixing strength between the heavy neutrino and the tau neutrino in the $\nus$ mass range from 10 to 190 $\rm MeV$. Windows between the SN1987a and Big Bang Nucleosynthesis lower limits and our result are still open for future experimental searches. The results obtained are used to constrain an interpretation of the time anomaly observed in the KARMEN1 detector.\, Comment: 20 pages, 7 figures, a few comments added
