An overview of the recent operations and the main results of cesium injection in the Source for the Production of Ions of Deuterium Extracted from Rf plasma (SPIDER) negative ion source are described in this contribution. In experiments without cesium injection, all SPIDER plants were tested to verify the basic expectations on the operational parameters (e.g., electron cooling effectiveness of magnetic filter field) and to determine its operational region. For beam properties, it was shown that the current density varies across the beam in the vertical direction. In preliminary cesium experiments, the expected increase of negative ion current and simultaneous decrease of co-extracted electrons were found, along with the influence of the control parameters (polarization of the plasma electrodes, magnetic filter field) on the SPIDER beam uniformity in the horizontal and vertical directions. It was shown that non-Gaussian tails can be identified in the angular distribution on the plane perpendicular to the beam propagation direction. Stray particles, nonhomogeneous beam and large divergence might result in unexpected heat and particle loads over ITER neutral beam injector (NBI) accelerator grids; it is the goal of SPIDER to assess and possibly to identify suitable methods for controlling these beam features. A major shutdown, planned for late 2021, to solve the issues identified during the operation and to carry out scheduled modifications, is outlined. Such improvements are expected to allow SPIDER to pursue the ITER requirements in terms of negative ion current, electron-to-ion ratio, and beam duration.

The ecoepidemiological panorama of paracoccidioidomycosis (PCM) is dynamic and still ongoing in Brazil. In particular, data about the oral lesions of PCM are barely explored. The aim of this study was to report the clinicopathological features of individuals diagnosed with oral PCM lesions at an oral and maxillofacial pathology service in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in the light of a literature review. A retrospective study was conducted on oral biopsies obtained from 1958 to 2021. Additionally, electronic searches were conducted in PubMed, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science, Latin American and Caribbean Center on Health Sciences Information, and Brazilian Library of Dentistry to gather information from large case series of oral PCM. Ninety-five cases of oral PCM were surveyed. The manifestations were more frequent among males (n=86/90.5%), middle-aged/older adults (n=54/58.7%), and white individuals (n=40/51.9%). The most commonly affected sites were the gingiva/alveolar ridge (n=40/23.4%) and lip/labial commissure (n=33/19.3%); however, one (n=40/42.1%) or multiple sites (n=55/57.9%) could also be affected. In 90 (94.7%) patients, ?mulberry-like? ulcerations/moriform appearance were observed. Data from 21 studies (1,333 cases), mostly Brazilian (90.5%), revealed that men (92.4%; male/female: 11.8:1) and individuals in the fifth and sixth decades of life were the most affected (range: 7-89 years), with the gingiva/alveolar ridge, palate, and lips/labial commissure being the sites most frequently affected. The features of oral PCM lesions are similar to those reported in previous studies from Latin America. Clinicians should be aware of the oral manifestations of PCM, with emphasis on the clinicodemographic aspects and differential diagnoses, especially considering the phenomenon of the emergence of reported cases in rural and/or urban areas of Brazil.

Cosmogenic radio-nuclei are an important source of background for low-energy neutrino experiments. In Borexino, cosmogenic $$^{11}$$ 11 C decays outnumber solar pep and CNO neutrino events by about ten to one. In order to extract the flux of these two neutrino species, a highly efficient identification of this background is mandatory. We present here the details of the most consolidated strategy, used throughout Borexino solar neutrino measurements. It hinges upon finding the space-time correlations between $$^{11}$$ 11 C decays, the preceding parent muons and the accompanying neutrons. This article describes the working principles and evaluates the performance of this Three-Fold Coincidence (TFC) technique in its two current implementations: a hard-cut and a likelihood-based approach. Both show stable performances throughout Borexino Phases II (2012–2016) and III (2016–2020) data sets, with a $$^{11}$$ 11 C tagging efficiency of $$\sim 90$$ ∼ 90 % and $$\sim $$ ∼ 63–66 % of the exposure surviving the tagging. We present also a novel technique that targets specifically $$^{11}$$ 11 C produced in high-multiplicity during major spallation events. Such $$^{11}$$ 11 C appear as a burst of events, whose space-time correlation can be exploited. Burst identification can be combined with the TFC to obtain about the same tagging efficiency of $$\sim 90\%$$ ∼ 90 % but with a higher fraction of the exposure surviving, in the range of $$\sim $$ ∼ 66–68 %.

Today it is widely accepted that molecular mechanisms triggering cancer initiate with a genetic modification. However, a genetic alteration providing the aberrant clone with a growing advantage over neighboring cells is not sufficient to develop cancer. Currently, tumors are considered a heterogeneous population of cells and an extracellular matrix (ECM) that make up a characteristic microenvironment. Interactions between tumor cells and cancer microenvironment define cancer progression and therapeutic response. To investigate and clarify the role of ECM in the regulation of cancer cell behavior and response to therapy, the decellularization of ECM, a widely used technique in tissue engineering, has been recently employed to develop 3D culture model of disease. In this review, we briefly explore the different components of healthy and pathological ECM and the methods to obtain and characterize the ECM from native bioptic tissue. Finally, we highlight the most relevant applications of ECM in translational cancer research strategies: decellularized ECM, ECM-hydrogel and 3D bioprinting.

Objective Healthcare agencies recommend limited use of aerosol‐generating procedures to mitigate disease (COVID‐19) transmission. However, total dispersion patterns of aerosols, particularly respirable droplets, via dental ultrasonic units is unclear. The purpose of this study was to characterize and map total spatter, droplet and aerosol dispersion during ultrasonic scaling in simulated and clinical contexts. Methods Ultrasonic scaling was performed on dental simulation units using methylene blue dye‐stained water. All resultant stain profiles were photoanalysed to calculate droplet size and travel distance/direction. Airborne particle concentrations were also documented 0–1.2 m (0–4ft.) and 1.2–2.4 m (4–8ft.) from patients during in vivo ultrasonic scaling with a saliva ejector. Results Stain profiles showed droplets between 25 and 50µm in diameter were most common, with smaller droplets closer to the mouth. In‐vivo particle concentrations were uniformly low. The smallest (10 µm, PM10+) particles were most common, especially within 1.2 m (4ft.) of the patient. Respirable particles (PM2.5) were uncommon. Conclusions Tests showed the highest concentration of small droplets in zones nearest the patient. While uncommon, particles were detected up to 2.4 m (8ft.) away. Furthermore, observed particle sizes were consistent with those that can carry infectious agents. Efforts to mitigate the spread of inhalable aerosols should emphasize proximate regions nearest the procedure, including personal protective equipment and the use of evacuation devices.

Neutrinoless double- $$\beta $$ β decay of $$^{76}$$ 76 Ge is searched for with germanium detectors where source and detector of the decay are identical. For the success of future experiments it is important to increase the mass of the detectors. We report here on the characterization and testing of five prototype detectors manufactured in inverted coaxial (IC) geometry from material enriched to 88% in $$^{76}$$ 76 Ge. IC detectors combine the large mass of the traditional semi-coaxial Ge detectors with the superior resolution and pulse shape discrimination power of point contact detectors which exhibited so far much lower mass. Their performance has been found to be satisfactory both when operated in vacuum cryostat and bare in liquid argon within the Gerda setup. The measured resolutions at the Q-value for double- $$\beta $$ β decay of $$^{76}$$ 76 Ge ( $$Q_{\beta \beta }$$ Q β β = 2039 keV) are about 2.1 keV full width at half maximum in vacuum cryostat. After 18 months of operation within the ultra-low background environment of the GERmanium Detector Array (Gerda) experiment and an accumulated exposure of 8.5 kg $$\cdot $$ · year, the background index after analysis cuts is measured to be $$4.9^{+7.3}_{-3.4}\times 10^{-4} \ \text {counts}/(\text {keV} \cdot \text {kg} \cdot \text {year})$$ 4 . 9 - 3.4 + 7.3 × 10 - 4 counts / ( keV · kg · year ) around $$Q_{\beta \beta }$$ Q β β . This work confirms the feasibility of IC detectors for the next-generation experiment Legend.

In this paper we report the observations of HD189733b, Kepler-41b, Kepler-42b, GJ 436b, WASP-77ab, HAT-P-32b and EPIC 211818569 as measured at the Osservatorio Polifunzionale del Chianti, a new astro-nomical site in Italy. Commissioning observing runs have been done in order to test capabilities, systematics and limits of the system and to improve its accuracy. For this purpose, a software algorithm has been developed to estimate the differential photometric error of any transit observation, so that the integration time can be chosen to reach optimal signal-to-noise ratios, and to obtain a picture of what kind of transits this setup can reveal. Currently, the system is able to reach an accuracy of about 1 mmag and so it is ready for the much needed exoplanetary transit follow-up.

ITER envisages the use of two heating neutral beam injectors plus an optional one as part of the auxiliary heating and current drive system, to reach the desired performances during its various phases of operation. The 16.5 MW expected neutral beam power per injector is several notches higher than worldwide existing facilities.In order to enable such development, a Neutral Beam Test Facility (NBTF) was established at Consorzio RFX, exploiting the synergy of two test beds, called SPIDER and MITICA. SPIDER is dedicated developing and char-acterizing large efficient negative ion sources at relevant parameters in ITER-like conditions: source and accel-erator located in the same vacuum where the beam propagates, immunity to electromagnetic interferences of multiple radio-frequency (RF) antennas, avoidance of RF-induced discharges on the outside of the source. Three years of experiments on SPIDER have addressed to the necessary design modifications to enable full perfor-mances. The source is presently under a long shut-down phase to incorporate learnings from the experimental campaign, in particular events/issues occurred during operation, which led to the identification of improvement opportunities/necessities (e.g. RF discharges, local burns, water leaks, other damages, configuration/design upgrades to maximize chances/margin to quest target parameters).Parallelly, developments on MITICA, the full-scale prototype of the ITER Neutral Beam Injector (NBI) featuring a 1 MV accelerator and ion neutralization, are underway including manufacturing of the beam source, accel-erator and the beam line components, while power supplies and auxiliary plants, already installed, are under final testing and commissioning.Integration, commissioning and tests of the 1 MV power supplies are essential for this first-of-kind system, unparalleled both in research and industry field. 1.2 MV dc insulating tests of high voltage components were successfully completed. The integrated test to confirm 1 MV output by combining invertor systems, DC gener-ators and transmission lines extracted errors/accidents in some components. To realize a concrete system for ITER, said events have been addressed and solutions for the repair and the improvement of the system were developed.Hence, NBTF is emerging as a necessary facility, due to the large gap with existing injectors, effectively dedicated to identify issues and find solutions to enable successful ITER NBI operations in a time bound fashion. The lessons learned during the implementation on NBTF and future perspectives are here discussed.

The tokamak à configuration variable (TCV) continues to leverage its unique shaping capabilities, flexible heating systems and modern control system to address critical issues in preparation for ITER and a fusion power plant. For the 2019–20 campaign its configurational flexibility has been enhanced with the installation of removable divertor gas baffles, its diagnostic capabilities with an extensive set of upgrades and its heating systems with new dual frequency gyrotrons. The gas baffles reduce coupling between the divertor and the main chamber and allow for detailed investigations on the role of fuelling in general and, together with upgraded boundary diagnostics, test divertor and edge models in particular. The increased heating capabilities broaden the operational regime to include T e/T i ∼ 1 and have stimulated refocussing studies from L-mode to H-mode across a range of research topics. ITER baseline parameters were reached in type-I ELMy H-modes and alternative regimes with ‘small’ (or no) ELMs explored. Most prominently, negative triangularity was investigated in detail and confirmed as an attractive scenario with H-mode level core confinement but an L-mode edge. Emphasis was also placed on control, where an increased number of observers, actuators and control solutions became available and are now integrated into a generic control framework as will be needed in future devices. The quantity and quality of results of the 2019–20 TCV campaign are a testament to its successful integration within the European research effort alongside a vibrant domestic programme and international collaborations.

The results are presented of an experimental activity performed in the RFX-mod device aimed at characterizing plasma dynamics in the so-called Ultralow-q (ULq) magnetic configuration, which corresponds to edge safety factor values below 1. The role of the edge safety factor in determining plasma dynamics is studied. In particular, a characterization of MHD activity is performed. The results of dedicated non-linear 3D visco-resistive MHD simulations are in good quantitative agreement with the experimental observations. In particular, the predicted tendency for ULq plasmas to be characterized by magnetic spectra dominated by a single mode (either a kink or a double resonant internal mode) is confirmed by experiment. Magnetic reconnection plays a relevant role in determining the dynamics of the magnetic topology. Both almost quiescent and largely fluctuating plasmas are observed with a strong sensitivity on the edge safety factor. The main MHD properties of the ULq are compared to those of RFP and tokamak discharges, also produced in the RFX-mod device. MHD modes exhibit toroidal rotation at a frequency depending on mode amplitude. Differently from what encountered in RFP plasmas at comparable current levels, no wall locking is detected.

Interest in global health is increasing among neurology residents. However, funding, time, and, recently, COVID-19 travel restrictions remain barriers to widespread participation. To meet this need, we instituted virtual global neurology morning reports with the objectives of (1) improving knowledge about neurologic diseases common in sub-Saharan Africa and (2) developing clinical reasoning skills through consideration of diagnostic and therapeutic limitations in resource-limited settings. Interactive case-based sessions were presented from Zambia via videoconference by a Johns Hopkins faculty member or Zambian neurology trainee. An anonymous cross-sectional survey was conducted among Johns Hopkins neurology residents. Of eligible participants, 69% (n = 30) completed the survey, 66% of whom were female, and 33% reported prior in-person global health experience. Although most participants did not anticipate a career in global health, the majority (85%) reported that exposure to global health was important. All but 1 participant (96%) reported satisfaction with the global neurology morning reports, with 100% reporting that they were useful to their clinical knowledge and 86% reporting that they were useful to their clinical practice. All respondents felt that morning reports should continue, and 69% ranked the educational value of the experience in the top quartile of the residency curriculum. Resident satisfaction with and perceived utility of global neurology morning reports were high, although the majority did not plan to pursue global neurology opportunities as part of their career. Remote learning opportunities may increase interest in global health among neurology residents.

The GERmanium Detector Array (Gerda) is a low background experiment located at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso in Italy, which searches for neutrinoless double-beta decay of $$^{76}$$ 76 Ge into $$^{76}$$ 76 Se+2e$$^-$$ - . Gerda has been conceived in two phases. Phase II, which started in December 2015, features several novelties including 30 new 76Ge enriched detectors. These were manufactured according to the Broad Energy Germanium (BEGe) detector design that has a better background discrimination capability and energy resolution compared to formerly widely-used types. Prior to their installation, the new BEGe detectors were mounted in vacuum cryostats and characterized in detail in the Hades underground laboratory in Belgium. This paper describes the properties and the overall performance of these detectors during operation in vacuum. The characterization campaign provided not only direct input for Gerda Phase II data collection and analyses, but also allowed to study detector phenomena, detector correlations as well as to test the accuracy of pulse shape simulation codes.

SPIDER (Source for Production of Ion of Deuterium Extracted from RF plasma) is the full-size prototype of the negative ion source for future ITER neutral beam injectors. With a maximum acceleration voltage of 100 kV, a negative ion beam is extracted and accelerated, and different diagnostics are developed to characterize the performance, shape, and deflection of the beam as well as the width of the beamlets. In particular, the optics of the accelerated beam is studied with a set of 15 cameras installed all around the beam, and they measure the visible emission; the spatial profile of the emission gives an estimate of the beamlets that compose the beam and also information about its optics. In this paper, experiments performed in volume operation (without cesium) are analyzed, studying the role of the extraction and acceleration voltages, polarization of plasma grid and bias plate, and magnetic filter field. It is shown how the width of the beam is not spatially uniform. Two types of non-uniformity are pointed out: a top/bottom asymmetry at large spatial scale and a smaller one at the single driver scale.

Giant negative ion sources for neutral beam injectors deliver huge negative ion currents, thanks to their multi-beamlet configuration. As the single-beamlet optics defines the transmission losses along the beamline, the extraction of a similar current for all beamlets is extremely desirable, in order to facilitate the beam source operation (i.e., around perveance match). This Review investigates the correlation between the vertical profile of beam intensity and the vertical profiles of plasma properties at the extraction region of the source, focusing on the influence of increasing cesium injection. Only by the combined use of all available source diagnostics, described in this Review, can beam features on the scale of the non-uniformities be investigated with a sufficient space resolution. At RF power of 50 kW/driver, with intermediate bias currents and a filter field of 2.4 mT, it is found that the central part of the four vertical beam segments exhibits comparable plasma density and beamlet currents; at the edges of the central segments, both the beam and electron density appear to decrease (probably maintaining fixed electron-to-ion ratio); at the bottom of the source, an increase of cesium injection can compensate for the vertical drifts that cause a much higher presence of electrons and a lower amount of negative ions.

SPIDER is the full-size prototype of ITER Neutral Beam Injector ion source, in operation since June 2018 as part of the ITER Neutral Beam Test Facility located in Padova, Italy. The ion source of SPIDER is composed of eight Radio Frequency drivers operated in low hydrogen gas pressure, 0.3 Pa, driven at 1 MHz with a total nominal power of 800 kW, an extraction and acceleration system is used to produce a negative ion beam with an energy up to 100 keV. RF breakdowns outside the ion source beset the SPIDER experimentation since the beginning of the operations. Such breakdowns could be sustained by the power supplies but in many cases cause the plasma pulses to stop and might cause source damages. The scope of this work is to summarize the experimental pieces of evidence, classify the type of breakdowns and describe the electrical model for these events. Three classes of diagnostics have been used to investigate the RF breakdowns: electrical measure-ments from the Ion Source and Extraction Power Supply, visible cameras (both fast and slow) and optical fibers which collect lights from the rear of the SPIDER experiment. Each of these signals is somehow affected by the RF breakdowns; their comparative analysis allows improving the un-derstanding of this issue and helped the identifications of different types of breakdowns that can occur outside the SPIDER Ion Source. A discussion of the reasons behind the occurrence of the discharges, induced by the Radio Frequency, concludes the work.

We present the first search for bosonic superweakly interacting massive particles (super-WIMPs) as keV-scale dark matter candidates performed with the GERDA experiment. GERDA is a neutrinoless double-β decay experiment which operates high-purity germanium detectors enriched in Ge76 in an ultralow background environment at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS) of INFN in Italy. Searches were performed for pseudoscalar and vector particles in the mass region from 60 keV/c2 to 1 MeV/c2. No evidence for a dark matter signal was observed, and the most stringent constraints on the couplings of super-WIMPs with masses above 120 keV/c2 have been set. As an example, at a mass of 150 keV/c2 the most stringent direct limits on the dimensionless couplings of axionlike particles and dark photons to electrons of gae<3×10−12 and α′/α<6.5×10−24 at 90% credible interval, respectively, were obtained.

In the last few years, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has begun to target religious institutions—specifically churches—as a means to find and arrest undocumented immigrants. This technique is in legal tension with the First Amendment rights of free exercise of religion and free association. It is unclear, however, how these legal rights protect those most affected by this targeting tactic: undocumented immigrants. Undocumented immigrants may lack standing to challenge ICE’s tactics on their own and may require the help of related parties to protect their interests. This Note explores a potential solution to the ambiguity surrounding undocumented immigrants’ protection under the First Amendment. Specifically, this Note argues that while undocumented immigrants may be barred from filing suits challenging the constitutionality of ICE raids on religious institutions, U.S. citizens who worship alongside these immigrants can and should bring such suits and demand injunctions to end the practice. These citizens not only have the undisputed legal rights to bring such potential claims but also may use those rights to provide a legal and practical shield for undocumented immigrants who seek to attend church without government intrusion.

Reconnection events in high current reversed field pinch plasmas are often associated to the partial or total loss of the helical magnetic topology. The electron temperature collapse during these phenomena is investigated in RFX-mod thanks to high time resolution soft-x-ray diagnostics; these data are used, together with magnetic energy reconstructions, for energy balance analysis. The paper shows that the energy released during reconnection events, similarly to astrophysical plasmas, might be involved in ion heating, the latter being estimated by the energy distribution function of neutral atoms, a rather interesting feature in a reactorial perspective. These issues will be further investigated in RFX-mod2 , an upgrade of the present device starting its operations from 2022, where the modified boundary conditions are expected to increase the helical states duration and reduce the frequency of reconnection events.

Thanks to the progress of neutrino physics, today we are able of exploiting neutrinos as a tool to study astrophysical objects. The latter in turn serve as unique sources of elusive neutrinos, which fundamental properties are still to be understood. This contribution attempts to summarize the latest results obtained by measuring neutrinos emitted from the Sun and geoneutrinos produced in radioactive decays inside the Earth, with a particular focus on a recent discovery of the CNO-cycle solar neutrinos by Borexino. Comprehensive measurement of the pp-chain solar neutrinos and the first directional detection of sub-MeV solar neutrinos by Borexino, the updated 8B solar neutrino results of Super-Kamiokande, as well as the latest Borexino and KamLAND geoneutrino measurements are also discussed.

Borexino is a 280t liquid scintillator detector at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS), Italy. Its main goal is the precision spectroscopy of solar neutrinos down to energies of 0.19 MeV and for this task it features an unprecedented radio-purity and a high scintillation light yield. The solar neutrinos are measured by the elastic scattering off electrons which induce isotropically emitted scintillation photons as well as a sub-dominant number of Cherenkov photons that are detected by photomulitplier tubes. Here we present the first detection of sub-MeV solar neutrinos using their associated Cherenkov photons in a high light yield liquid scintillator detector. In Borexino electrons with E>0.16MeV produce Cherenkov photons, where the ratio of Cherenkov photons from the neutrino scattered electrons is estimated to be < 1% for all PMT hits, so a typical event by event direction reconstruction is not possible. Instead this analysis looks at the integrated signal of the PMT hits of all detected events by correlating the position of each hit PMT relative to the reconstructed position of the event and the well known position of the Sun. In this way it is possible to measure an angular distribution that shows the statistical contribution of Cherenkov photons from the solar neutrino recoil electrons. Using the Geant4-based Borexino Monte Carlo to produce the expected angular distribution for solar neutrinos and background we have measured 8643 − 2058 +2252 neutrino events out of 19904 total events for an energy region around the 7Be edge between 0.53 MeV and 0.74 MeV.

The Borexino detector, located at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso in Italy, is a radiopure 280 ton liquid scintillator detector with a primary goal to measure low-energy solar neutrinos created in the core of the Sun. These neutrinos are a consequence of nuclear fusion reactions in the solar core where Hydrogen is burned into Helium and provide a direct probe of the energy production processes, namely the proton-proton (pp) chain and the Carbon-Nitrogen-Oxygen (CNO) cycle. The fusion of Hydrogen in the case of the CNO cycle, which is expected to contribute in the order of less than 1% to the total solar energy, is catalyzed by Carbon, Nitrogen, and Oxygen directly depending on the abundances of these elements in the solar core. The measurement of CNO neutrinos is challenging due to the high spectral correlation with the decay electrons of the background isotope 210Bi and the pep solar neutrino signal. The experimental achievement of thermal stabilization of the Borexino detector after mid 2016, has opened the possibility to develop a method to constrain the 210Bi rate through its decay daughter and α emitter 210Po which can be identified in Borexino with an efficiency close to 100 percent on an event-by-event basis. Moreover, the flux of pep neutrinos can be constrained precisely through a global analysis of solar neutrino data which is independent of the dataset used for the CNO analysis. This conference contribution is dedicated to the first experimental evidence of neutrinos produced in the CNO fusion cycle in the Sun which is at the same time the dominant energy production mechanism in heavier stars compared to the Sun.

The Borexino detector at Gran Sasso has now accumulated over ten years of continuous data which represent a magnificent opportunity to study the cosmic muon flux at a deep underground location. We present here a precision measurement of the flux and of the expected seasonal modulation. We present the correlation with the atmospheric temperature variations from global atmospheric models. We measure the correlation parameters and infer the kaon-to-pion ratio in the production of cosmic muons from high energy primaries. We also find evidence of a long term modulation that is not present in the atmospheric data and we investigate a possible positive correlation with the solar activity. Finally we observe a seasonal modulation of the production rate of cosmogenic neutrons that is in phase with the muon modulation but shows a surprisingly larger amplitude.

Borexino is a 280-ton liquid scintillator detector located at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS), Italy and is one of the two detectors that has measured geoneutrinos so far. The unprecedented radio-purity of the scintillator, the shielding with highly purified water, and the placement of the detector at a 3800 m w.e. depth have resulted in very low background levels and has made Borexino an excellent apparatus for geoneutrino measurements. The new update of the Borexino geoneutrino measurement, using the data obtained from December 2007 to April 2019, has been presented. Enhanced analysis techniques, adopted in this measurement, have been also presented (poster presentation #39 by S. Kumaran). The updated statistics and the new elaborate analysis have led to more than a factor two increase in exposure ((1.12 ± 0.05) × 1032 protons × yr) when compared to the latest Borexino result from 2015. The resulting geoneutrino signal of 47.0 − 7.7 + 8.4 ( stat ) − 1.9 + 2.4 ( sys ) TNU has − 17.2 + 18.3 % total precision. The geological interpretations of this measurement have been discussed. In particular, the 99% C.L. observation of the mantle signal by exploiting the relatively well-known lithospheric contribution, the estimation of the radiogenic heat, as well as the comparison of these results to the predictions based on different geological models. The upper limits on the power of a hypothetical georeactor that might be present at different locations inside the Earth have been set.

Addressing the role of scrape off layer filamentary transport is a subject of intense studies in fusion science. Intermittent structures dominate transport in L-Mode and strongly contribute to particle and energy losses in H-mode. The role of convective radial losses has become even more important due to its contribution to the shoulder formation in L-Mode, describing the progressive flattening of the density scrape off layer profile at high density r1- 3s. Investigation of this process revealed the strong relationship between divertor conditions and the upstream profiles, mediated by filaments dynamics which varies according to the downstream conditions. Preliminary investigations suggested that similar mechanisms occur in H-Mode r1s and that filaments contribute the SOL transport in H-mode density limit (HDL) as well r4s. The present contribution will report on results obtained on ASDEXUpgrade and TCV tokamaks, to address the role of filamentary transport in high density regimes both in L- and H-Mode. The combined results enlarge the operational space, from a device with a closed divertor, metallic first wall and cryogenic pumping system to a carbon machine with a completely open divertor. The mechanism of shoulder formation and the role of filaments have been tested against variation of plasma current, magnetic configuration (single and double null plasmas), and divertor neutral densities, through modification of cryopump efficiency. At constant magnetic field the density decay length increases with filament-size independently of the plasma current for both machines in L-mode, consistently with the fact that upstream profiles and divertor neutral pressure exhibit the same trend with normalized Greenwald fraction.

Introduction/Background It has been inferred that stroke-induced alterations of the lower motor neurons and their muscle fibres may contribute to muscle weakness and thus to motor impairment. Although previous accounts have investigated the mechanisms underpinning muscle weakness from muscle fiber conduction velocity estimates, reports about how the global conduction velocity (CV) differ between healthy and paretic muscles post-stroke are uncommon. Thus, in this study we examined side-differences in global CV estimates from biceps brachii muscles of stroke survivors, and their relation with differences between muscles’ functions. Material and method Seven chronic post-stroke patients participated in this study. Surface electromyograms were sampled with a grid of 32 electrodes (8 × 4; 10 mm inter-electrode distance) from biceps brachii. Stimulation electrodes were placed in bipolar configuration as proximally as possible over the muscle. CV values were estimated from differential M waves elicited by supramaximal current pulses. Impairment of biceps brachii functions was assessed with the Fugl-Meyer Assessment scale. Spearman's rank-order correlation was applied to verify the relationship of the healthy/paretic ratio values for CV and Fugl-Meyer values. Results There was a significant negative correlation (Rho = −0.96; P = 0.003; n = 7: Fig. 1 ) between side-differences in CV values and the functional scores. Conclusion Marked differences in CV values estimated for the healthy and paretic limbs were associated with highly impaired, biceps brachii function. Conversely, patients with either preserved or recovered motor function exhibited similar CV values for both limbs. Whether these side-differences in CV may be explained by structural adaptations remains an open issue. Current results reveal however the CV values may constitute a relevant index to assess the degree of motor function in biceps brachii motor units.

Strip cleanliness in the industrial cold rolling mill must be controlled by optimizing the roll, strip, lubricant and process parameters. Obtained experimental evidence in this work shows which of these parameters have a significant influence on strip cleanliness. The experiments were carried out on a plate-out tester and on cold rolling pilot mills. New findings were the influence of thickness reduction on strip cleanliness: a high reduction in the first stands of a tandem mill results in poor strip cleanliness, but in the latter stands a high reduction results in a better strip cleanliness than a low reduction. Furthermore the beneficial influence of a chrome coating on the work roll was shown to be related to the better adherence of oil to this type of work roll. This article provides a concise overview of the experimental results achieved and their interpretation.

The convective radial transport effects of SOL turbulence have been estimated using recent turbulence data from the gas puff imaging (GPI) camera diagnostic on Alcator C-Mod. The average radial turbulence speed within the region 1-2 cm outside the separatrix near the outer was calculated by a 2-0 cross-correlation technique to be V-t similar to 0.2-0.3 km/s. Assuming this to be the local convective plasma velocity, the density SOL width lambda(n) was evaluated using a simple convective model to be lambda(n) similar to 4-7 cm, which is similar to 2-3 times higher than that measured using a Langmuir probe. This convective velocity was also similar to 2-3 times lower than the velocities estimated from analytic blob models, but showed a similar scaling with plasma current at constant q(95). The measured blob speeds were lower than both the convective speeds and the analytic blob model speeds.

One of the main issues regarding the design of LFR is the corrosion-erosion behaviour of materials in contact with high temperature and high velocity lead, such as pump impeller and bearing materials. Those materials will worked in Lead at about 480°C with a velocity relative to impeller blade in the magnitude of 10m/s. Ti3 SiC2 , a ternary compound was selected as one of the most promising candidate material, the most significant aspect of Ti3 SiC2 is that it combines some of the most attractive proprieties of ceramics with those of metals. This material was already applied in industry but more effort is needed to qualify its performance when compared with candidate structural stainless steel available in Europe. With the purpose of evaluating the corrosion resistance of Ti3 SiC2 , a preliminary screening test was carried out at ENEA Brasimone in fluent lead under oxidation conditions (oxygen concentration of about 10−6 wt% in the melt), with an average temperature of 500°C and a stream velocity of about 1 m/s.Copyright © 2009 by ASME

Femora of 121 white men were divided into two weight classes based on body mass index (BMI) of the deceased. Five external anteroposterior (AP) and mediolateral (ML) measurements were taken at consistent percentages of diaphyseal length. These were then subject to statistical tests. After controlling for age, multivariate statistics show a significant (p < 0.05) effect of BMI on the femur, with the greatest significance in ML measurements. T-tests confirm these dimensions are significantly larger in the overweight (p < 0.05). The effect of BMI on size-transformed and shape-transformed variables was also evaluated, with ANOVA results showing a significant BMI effect on ML size (p < 0.05), but not shape. Significant size-transformed ML variables were then subject to discriminate function analyses with a cross-validation correction. Results show a correct classification rate of 88% in normal weight and 77% in overweight individuals.

The GERmanium Detector Array (GERDA) experiment is searching for the neutrinoless double beta decay ( 0νββ ) of the isotope 76 Ge. High-purity germanium crystals enriched in 76 Ge, simultaneously used as source and detector, are directly deployed into ultra-pure, cryogenic liquid argon, which acts both as cooling medium and shield against the external radiation. The second phase of the experiment is taking data since end of 2015 with 20 additional kg of custom-made BEGe-type Germanium detectors and an active LAr veto. In this paper we will summarize the results of the last data release of June 2017. No evidence for a possible signal is found: the lower limit for the half-life of 76 Ge is 8.0·1025 yr at 90% CL. The very low residual background found at the Q -value of the decay, about 10-3 cts/(keV · kg · yr), makes Gerda the first experiment in the field to be background-free for the complete design exposure of 100 kg · yr.

Runaway Electrons (REs) are beams of electrons within a tokamak plasma, accelerated to velocities close to the speed of light. They represent a major concern in tokamaks because they are lost to the first wall, resulting in significant local energy deposition, local melting and damage of plasma-facing components. Key to the successful operation of tokamaks, and in particular of ITER and future energy-generation reactors such a DEMO, is the ability to avoid and control REs to mitigate their impact on the machine operation. A comprehensive experimental program on the study of REs has been developed at FTU by the integration of diagnostic, hardware and software tools in real-time (RT) plasma control system, including the CO2 scanning interferometer for RE position control, a fission chamber to monitor RE interactions with plasma-facing components and the hard x-ray radial profile monitor for the measurement of in-plasma bremsstrahlung from REs. Further, two new diagnostics have been developed specifically to measure in-flight and lost REs, respectively, the RE Imaging Spectrometer system (REIS) and a Cherenkov probe. The REIS provides both image and (visible and infrared) spectra of RE synchrotron emission, providing information on the RE energy distribution function. The Cherenkov probe, installed within the plasma scrape-off layer, detects RE losses, enabling the study of RE dynamics in the presence of magnetic islands. This probe provided also first evidence of RE losses in the presence of beta induced Alfvén eigenmodes using a non-magnetic diagnostics. A three-channel Cherenkov probe is being installed, to permit energy discrimination and simultaneous data collection from different toroidal/poloidal positions. SPIDER is one of the two projects of the ITER Neutral Beam Test Facility (NBTF) under construction in Padova, Italy, at Consorzio RFX premises; it is the full-size prototype of the radiofrequency (RF) ion source for ITER Neutral Beam Injector (NBI), with beam energy of 100keV, designed to operate with pulse length up to 3600 s, featuring ITER-like filter field configuration, caesium oven layout and a wide set of diagnostics. These features will allow reproducing the ion source operation like in ITER as cannot be done in any other existing test facility. SPIDER realization is well advanced and the first operation is expected at the beginning of 2018, with the mission to prove the possibility of achieving the ITER NBI ion source target requirements and of improving its performance in terms of reliability and availability. This paper mainly focuses on the preparation of the first SPIDER operations: integration and testing of SPIDER components, completion and implementation of diagnostics and control and workout of operation and research plan, based on a staged strategy.

This paper describes the tensile test results of martensitic steels EUROFER 97 and T91 after exposure to flowing Pb–17Li and Pb–55.5Bi alloy, respectively. The corrosion tests were performed in LIFUS II loop (Pb–17Li) and LECOR loop (Pb–55.5Bi) located in the ENEA Brasimone Center. Tensile test were carried in SYNTECH test machine under Ar atmosphere with an extension rate of 2 mm/min, and test temperature for EUROFER and T91 steels were at 480 and 400 °C respectively. The exposure of EUROFER steel to the liquid Pb–17Li did not affect its mechanical properties, while the ductility of T91 steel was deteriorated after exposed to flowing liquid Pb–55.5Bi.

Purpose To analyze the genetic variability in a variable number of tandem repeats (VNTR) in the thymidylate synthase (TS) enhancer promoter region and assess the influence of functional alterations in mismatch repair genes by analyzing constitutional and tumoral DNA from patients with colorectal adenocarcinoma with a high microsatellite instability (MSI-H) or microsatellite stability (MSS) status. Patients and methods Patients who underwent surgery for colorectal adenocarcinoma were selected from the colorectal database of our institute and, on the basis of MSI status, assigned to a study group and a control group: group A, MSI-H; group B, MSS. Microsatellite status was investigated using the Bethesda recommended panel (BAT-26, BAT-25, D2S123, D5S346, D17S250). In MSI-H patients an additional analysis was made of the microsatellite loci D18S61 and D18S58, both mapping in the region containing the TS gene (18p11.2–11.32). Based on the number of altered microsatellites (≥2, 1, or 0), tumors were considered as having high (MSI-H) or low (MSI-L) instability or microsatellite stability (MSS), respectively. Genotyping for thymidylate synthase promoter polymorphism was carried out on constitutional and tumor DNA of each patient by PCR amplification of the polymorphic region. Results MSI-H was found in 55 patients (group A) and MSS in 50 patients (group B). In none of the MSI-H patients was microsatellite instability found in the additional D18S61 and D18S58 loci. In five group A and ten group B cases the analysis was not performed because constitutional DNA and/or tumoral DNA were not amplifiable. Homozygotes for the triple repeat variant (3R/3R) displayed only the large PCR product, homozygotes for the double repeat variant (2R/2R) displayed only the smaller PCR product, while heterozygotes (2R/3R) displayed both the larger and smaller PCR products. In 3/50 (6%) group A patients and 5/40 (12%) group B patients repeat variations were found in tumoral DNA. Conclusion Our findings demonstrate that there is genetic homogeneity between constitutional and tumoral DNA but do not support the hypothesis that mismatch repair genes are involved in VNTR recombinant events in TS gene variability.
