Die Fundstellen von Brunn 3 in Österreich und Schwanfeld in Deutschland lassen sich in die frühe Phase der linearbandkeramischen Kultur (LBK) einordnen. Komplexe mit archaischen Keramiktypen definieren ihre Stellung unter den frühesten Fundplätzen, die chronologisch gesehen auf die Formative Phase dieser Kultur folgten. Beide Fundorte weisen seltene gemeinsame Formen von Keramik und Verzierungen auf, sowie Gebäude mit ähnlichen trapezförmigen Grundrissen. Haus 16 der Schwanfelder Siedlung und Haus 38, Fundstelle 3 der Siedlung von Brunn am Gebirge können aufgrund ihrer Übereinstimmungen zu Recht als architektonische Zwillinge bezeichnet werden. Zum ersten Mal stellen wir das Phänomen baugleicher Häuser vor, die geographisch gesehen weit voneinander entfernt liegen. Eine Besonderheit von Haus 16 von Schwanfeld ist sicherlich das sogenannte Gründergrab, bei dem es sich um ein männliches Individuum handelt und von den Ausgräbern aufgrund der Beigaben als Jäger oder Krieger angesprochen wird (Lüning, 2011, 5). Es handelt sich hierbei um eine Sonderbestattung innerhalb einer großen Grube mit einer sehr frühen Datierung von 5484 v. Chr. (Lüning, 2011, 5). Interessanterweise gibt es auch gewisse Parallelen zu den ältesten Häusern der Formativen Phase von Brunn am Gebirge, die sich im Bereich der Fundstelle 2b befinden. Eines dieser Häuser, Haus 11, weist eine Datierung von 5525-5453 v. Chr. auf (Stadler & Minnich, 2021, Tab. 9.2) und zeigt deutliche Parallelen zum Nachbarhaus von Haus 16 aus Schwanfeld, bei dem es sich um Haus 15 handelt. Neben vergleichbaren Radiokarbondaten, die natürlich mit einer gewissen Vorsicht zu behandeln sind, Ähnlichkeiten in der Keramikdekoration und ihren Formen, spielen auch architektonische Übereinstimmungen eine wichtige Rolle, die gegen eine Zufälligkeit sprechen. Drusen are hallmarks of early and intermediate age-related macular degeneration (AMD) but their quantification remains a challenge. We compared automated drusen volume measurements between different OCT devices. We included 380 eyes from 200 individuals with bilateral intermediate (iAMD, n = 126), early (eAMD, n = 25) or no AMD (n = 49) from the MACUSTAR study. We assessed OCT scans from Cirrus (200 × 200 macular cube, 6 × 6 mm; Zeiss Meditec, CA) and Spectralis (20° × 20°, 25 B-scans; 30° × 25°, 241 B-scans; Heidelberg Engineering, Germany) devices. Sensitivity and specificity for drusen detection and differences between modalities were assessed with intra-class correlation coefficients (ICCs) and mean difference in a 5 mm diameter fovea-centered circle. Specificity was > 90% in the three modalities. In eAMD, we observed highest sensitivity in the denser Spectralis scan (68.1). The two different Spectralis modalities showed a significantly higher agreement in quantifying drusen volume in iAMD (ICC 0.993 [0.991–0.994]) than the dense Spectralis with Cirrus scan (ICC 0.807 [0.757–0.847]). Formulae for drusen volume conversion in iAMD between the two devices are provided. Automated drusen volume measures are not interchangeable between devices and softwares and need to be interpreted with the used imaging devices and software in mind. Accounting for systematic difference between methods increases comparability and conversion formulae are provided. Less dense scans did not affect drusen volume measurements in iAMD but decreased sensitivity for medium drusen in eAMD.Trial registration: ClinicalTrials.gov NCT03349801. BACKGROUND: A set of enduring conditions have been reported in the literature involving persistent sexual dysfunction after discontinuation of serotonin reuptake inhibiting antidepressants, 5 alpha-reductase inhibitors and isotretinoin.OBJECTIVE: To develop diagnostic criteria for post-SSRI sexual dysfunction (PSSD), persistent genital arousal disorder (PGAD) following serotonin reuptake inhibitors, post-finasteride syndrome (PFS) and post-retinoid sexual dysfunction (PRSD).METHODS: The original draft was designed using data from two published case series (Hogan et al., 2014 and Healy et al., 2018), which represent the largest public collections of data on these enduring conditions. It was further developed with the involvement of a multidisciplinary panel of experts.RESULTS: A set of criteria were agreed upon for each of the above conditions. Features of PSSD, PFS and PRSD commonly include decreased genital and orgasmic sensation, decreased sexual desire and erectile dysfunction. Ancillary non-sexual symptoms vary depending on the specific condition but can include emotional blunting and cognitive impairment. PGAD presents with an almost mirror image of unwanted sensations of genital arousal or irritability in the absence of sexual desire. A new term, post-SSRI asexuality, is introduced to describe a dampening of sexual interest and pleasure resulting from a pre-natal or pre-teen exposure to a serotonin reuptake inhibitor.CONCLUSIONS: These criteria will help in both clinical and research settings. As with all criteria, they will likely need modification in the light of developments.

The pulse intensity from X-ray free-electron lasers (FELs) can create extreme excitation densities in solids, entering the regime of non-linear X-ray-matter interactions. We show L3-edge absorption spectra of metallic nickel thin films with fluences entering a regime where several X-ray photons are incident per absorption cross-section. The purpose of the thesis is to numerically and analytically predict settlements from a test embankment constructed on MC-reinforced clay in Täby Park. The thesis also provides a description of how the test embankment should be instrumented to enable comparison with the calculated settlements. The main objective is to compare the settlements in the piles versus the clay.The test embankment has not yet been constructed at the time of writing this report. The embankment will be built by Skanska AB and have a width of 15 m and a length of 25 m, measured at the crest of the embankment. The embankment has a slope of 2:1 and a height of 4 m. The MC-columns have a diameter of 800 mm and are spaced at 650 mm between the columns and 2.2 m between the rows. The expected service life of the test embankment is 30 years.The results from the numerical simulations show a total settlement of approximately 120 mm for the 4 m high test embankment. It was also observed that the columns are loaded beyond their failure limit, and no clear difference could be seen between deformations in the clay versus the columns. A 2 m high embankment was simulated to investigate the settlement behavior when the columns were not loaded beyond their failure load. In the case of the 2 m high test embankment, the numerical simulations showed a settlement of approximately 30 mm, which also showed relatively good agreement with the analytical calculations that were performed. A slight difference between the columns and the clay could be observed in this case.It is recommended to instrument the test embankment with settlement markers and settlement gauges to measure the settlements. A total of 8settlement markers will be installed, placed both on the columns and in the clay. Four settlement gauges will be installed, with two measuring settlements along the embankment in the clay and two measuring settlements along the embankment in the columns. Measurements of the embankment are recommended to be conducted daily during the first month after installation.Afterward, measurements can be conducted weekly for the remaining time of the first year. In the following year, measurements should be done on amonthly basis, and then semi-annually.Prior to the construction of the test embankment, a modification should be made to avoid loading the columns beyond their failure load. This can be achieved either by reducing the height of the embankment or by using denser spacing of the columns. Furthermore, it is recommended to conduct additional geotechnical measurements in the area and to manufacture test columns at the site. The test columns should also be subjected to long-term testing to investigate any potential stiffness development.

Histomonosis has become an important disease of turkeys since the ban of effective feed additives and therapeutics. Some critical risk factors for pathogen introduction into a farm have already been identified but open questions remain. Therefore, a retrospective case–control-study was used to identify the most significant risk factors for Histomonas (H.) meleagridis-introduction into a turkey farm. A total of 113 questionnaires were collected from 73 control-farms and 40 Histomonas-positive case-farms in Germany between 20 April 2021 and 31 January 2022. The data were analysed for possible risk factors by descriptive and univariate, single- and multi-factorial analysis. The presence of earthworms, snails and beetles, as vectors of H. meleagridis, as well as the proximity to other poultry-keeping farms in addition to a frequent observation of wild birds nearby the turkey farm, showed the highest risk potential for histomonosis outbreaks. Furthermore, poor biosecurity measures seem to have increased the probability for an outbreak. Insufficient climate management, straw as litter material and an inadequate litter refill frequency might have promoted a favourable humidity for vector- or pathogen survival providing important areas for improved disease control measures in the future. It is known that reducing or stopping selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) or serotonin norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs) can trigger a variety of symptoms, also known as SSRI withdrawal/discontinuation syndrome, in both adults and children (Fava et al., 2015; Hosenbocus & Chahal, 2011; Offidani et al., 2014). Rosenbaum et al. (1998) assessed withdrawal symptoms using the Discontinuation Emergence Signs and Symptoms (DESS) checklist and classified the patients as having withdrawal syndrome if the number of events on the DESS checklist increased by four or more during the interruption period. The incidence of withdrawal syndrome in fluoxetine-treated patients was significantly lower than the pooled incidence in sertraline-treated and paroxetine-treated patients (14, 60 and 66%, respectively). Definitions of the withdrawal syndrome and diagnostic criteria have been proposed since the late 1990s (e.g. Schatzberg et al., 1997). The suggestion by Black and colleagues (2000) was based on the occurrence of 2 or more of the following symptoms such as: dizziness, light-headedness, dizziness or fainting, shock-like sensations or paresthesia and anxiety (...) that developed within 1 to 7 days after discontinuation or dose reduction of an SSRI after at least one month of use. The symptoms had to cause clinically significant distress or impairment and were not due to a general medical condition or recurrence of a mental disorder. In 2015, Chouinard and Chouinard (2015) proposed a classification into three different diagnoses: 1) new withdrawal symptoms, 2) rebound, and 3) persistent post-withdrawal disorders. New withdrawal symptoms typically occur 36-96 hours after medication discontinuation and can persist for up to six weeks. Typical symptoms include flu-like symptoms, dizziness, palpitations, diarrhea, electroshock-like sensations, confusion, myoclonia, and premature ejaculation. Rebound symptoms also occur approximately 36-96 hours after discontinuation and can last up to six weeks and include the return of the original psychological disorder at a higher intensity. Persistent post-withdrawal disorders, on the other hand, occur 24 hours to 6 weeks after discontinuation and can last several weeks to months. This diagnosis is defined as the recurrence of the original mental disorder with a higher intensity and/or with additional symptoms and/or symptoms associated with new mental disorders. The prevalence of these syndromes is currently unknown because their definition is very recent and diagnostic tools are lacking. No diagnostic interviews have been prepared based on the proposed diagnostic criteria, the only one currently available is the DESS. However, the DESS is a checklist of signs and symptoms of withdrawal behavior that has no diagnostic purpose. In this context, the Diagnostic Clinical Interview for Drug Withdrawal 1 - New Symptoms of SSRIs and SNRIs (DID-W1) was developed (Cosci et al., 2018), a semi-structured clinical interview aimed at diagnosing new withdrawal symptoms, rebound withdrawal and persistent post withdrawal disorder according to the diagnostic criteria of Chouinard & Chouinard (2015). In order to make this interview available in Germany as well, it was translated into German. The goal of the current study is to assess the inter-rater reliability of the DID-W1.

The Internet is increasingly used to receive health-related information. Not only are query data used by patients to inform themselves about possible adverse drug reactions (ADRs) but also for drug safety surveillance. Although web search query data can't be equated with the true prescription rates, an analysis by Gahr et al. (2015) indicated that web search query volume may be a proxy for corresponding prescription behavior. In Germany, two third of Internet-users make a health-related search query (Eichenberg & Brähler, 2012); a trend which is increasing (McMullan et al., 2019). In total 5% of all Google search queries are health-related (Google, 2015), for 2019 this equates to 3.5 billion queries daily worldwide. Especially when patients develop adverse drug reactions such as side effects or discontinuation emergent symptoms, may cause them to use the internet to receive medical information. For instance, antidepressants received attention regarding ADRs and discontinuation emergent symptoms, such as new withdrawal symptoms, rebound symptoms, persistent post-withdrawal disorders and post-SSRI sexual dysfunction (PSSD; Baghai et al., 2011; Sterke et al., 2012; Mallery et al., 2019; Plöderl & Hengartner, 2019; Hengartnet et al., 2018; Whitaker, 2010; Davies & Read, 2019). The use of internet forums such as SSRIsex@yahoogroups.com played a role in the recognition of syndromes such as PSSD. On the one hand, this development can be seen as a chance for patients as they have easier access to medical information and can therefore make informed health-related decisions (Tan & Goonawardene, 2017). On the other hand, however, health-related information in the World Wide Web often suffer from poor quality or are superficial (Zhang et al., 2015). As Petrescu (2014) suggested in his study regarding organic click-through rates, 71% of the participants choose a result on the first page of Google. The second page of Google results only captures 6% of search traffic clicks. Furthermore, approximately 60% of the participants choose the first website of the search results (Beus, 2015). A consequence of an unreliable first search result may induce nocebo-effects, negative expectations or health-related fears. The current study seeks to document the Google query data regarding the discontinuation of antidepressant medication and to link them to the annual prescription volume in Germany. Further, the keywords used by the first three search results are analyzed. The broader intention is to establish recommendations in order to optimize health-related websites and to generate one website that provides valid information regarding antidepressant discontinuation and associated adverse reactions.

Contrary to the common belief that antidepressant-induced sexual dysfunction resolves upon discontinuation of the medication, Csoka and Shipko (2006) found that the symptoms can persist in a small proportion of patients after discontinuation - a syndrome they called "Post-SSRI Sexual Dysfunction" (PSSD). While the prevalence of sexual side effects during antidepressant treatment ranges from 36% to 98%, there is still no data on the prevalence of PSSD (Bahrick, 2006). PSSD differs from conventional sexual side effects in particular by symptoms such as genital numbness and the lack of euphoria after an orgasm. In addition, patients who are suffering from PSSD also describe emotional and cognitive symptoms that they attribute to taking or stopping the antidepressant (Bala, Nguyen & Hellstrom, 2018). Bahrick (2008) emphasizes that there is currently no optimal diagnostic tool for PSSD. This makes it difficult for patients and treatment providers to make a reliable diagnosis, which in turn can have a negative impact on treatment. Since women are often not sufficiently included in research due to their hormonal fluctuations, a separate consideration of the sexes is necessary in this topic area too - because sexual interest is expressed differently in each cycle phase (Friedrich, Ahrendt, Halstrick, Foth & Probst, 2015). A total of 2 groups are examined in the study. There is one experimental group (PSSD) and one healthy control group. The experimental group consists of female subjects who show PSSD symptoms and have taken SSRIs or SNRIs in the past. The primary aim of the study is to determine if there is a relationship between the menstrual cycle and PSSD symptoms.

The title compound, C17H19NO4, was synthesized by the reaction of 7-(diethylamino)-2-oxo-2H-chromene-3-carboxylic acid with allyl bromide and purified by flash column chromatography on silica gel. Crystals suitable for single-crystal X-ray diffraction were obtained by recrystallization from acetone. The aromatic core of the molecule is not planar with the diethylamino group and with the carboxyl group that are rotated out of the 2-oxo-2H-chromene plane by 6.7 (2)° and 11.4 (2)°. The NC2 unit of the diethylamino group is planar with an angle sum close to 360°. Intermolecular Car—H...Ocarbonyl interactions lead to the formation of chains parallel to the b axis. X-ray powder diffraction analysis proves that the title compound was obtained as a pure phase.

Precipitation in Europe shows natural fluctuations that differ considerably between seasons and geographical regions. A number of studies have linked local or seasonal rainfall variability to various long-distance air pressure differences in north–south or west–east direction. This paper presents the first continent-wide analysis of European rainfall variability on a month-by-month and country-by-country basis. We calculated Pearson r values for unsmoothed monthly rainfall data of 39 European countries over the period 1950–2019 with five potential climatic drivers, namely the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), the Arctic Oscillation (AO), the North Sea Caspian Pattern (NCP), and two indices of Mediterranean Oscillation (MOI2, WeMOI). For a variety of countries and months we found substantial and statistically significant r values of up to r = 0.7 and more. The dynamic temporal-spatial evolution of the Pearson correlations was mapped out across the continent, tracking the gradual or abrupt expansion, displacement and subsequent waning of the various effects over the course of the year. The correlation analysis was complemented by best subset multiple regression, controlling for intercorrelation of the potential drivers. Our results may help to improve short- to midterm rainfall prognoses in Europe and provide important calibration data for the further refinement of climate models.

ZusammenfassungIn dieser Online-Befragung wird erforscht, ob eine OMT-Weiterbildung (orthopädische manuelle/manipulative Physiotherapie) die Employability (Beschäftigungsfähigkeit) verbessert und woran man eine Verbesserung erkennen könnte. Veränderungen durch die OMT-Weiterbildung, deren Vor- und Nachteile und weitere Themen waren Bestandteile der Befragung. Die statistische Auswertung erfolgte deskriptiv. 190 Fragebögen wurden ausgewertet, die Rücklaufquote lag bei 44,6 %.Die Befragung zeigte, dass die OMT-Weiterbildung teilweise Vorteile mit sich bringt. Die Vorteile sind laut den Befragten eine verbesserte Behandlung und Beratung von Patienten, mehr Spaß und Motivation bei der Arbeit und eine erhöhte Patientenzufriedenheit. Keine Vorteile sind hingegen in Bezug auf eine bessere professionelle Position, Mehrverdienst oder eine verbesserte Zusammenarbeit mit den Krankenkassen zu erkennen. Zudem ist die Zufriedenheit mit dem Dachverband OMT-Deutschland eher gering. Dennoch würden über 90 % die OMT-Weiterbildung weiterempfehlen.Es sollten weitere Studien in Bezug auf die Employability von Physiotherapeuten mit bestimmten Fort-/Weiterbildungen durchgeführt werden. Nach Aussagen der OMT-zertifizierten Physiotherapeuten nimmt die Employability nach der OMT-Weiterbildung zu. Die Beziehung zu dem Dachverband OMT-Deutschland scheint eher schwierig oder nicht vorhanden zu sein.

Since the ban of effective feed additives and therapeutics, histomonosis has become an important disease and, subsequently, a welfare issue for turkey production. We conducted an interview-based case series study to generate hypotheses about possible disease-favouring conditions in 31 H. meleagridis-infected flocks. The determined parameters were related to the general farm (flock management, biosecurity measures, etc.) as well as the histomonosis-specific disease management. Some inadequate biosecurity measures were observed. An inappropriate usage of the hygiene lock and cleaning as well as the disinfection frequency of equipment, clothes, and the hygiene lock could possibly be histomonosis-favouring conditions. These factors could increase the risk for the introduction of H. meleagridis and the risk of a pathogen spread on an affected farm. Insects, wild birds, litter materials, and contaminated dung could be potential vectors of H. meleagridis. Predisposing gastrointestinal diseases were observed in 71% of the affected flocks. Additionally, stress events related to higher temperature, movement of birds, and vaccination were documented in association with clinical histomonosis. The results emphasise the need for both good disease control and health management to ensure sustainable animal health and welfare.

In particular, FELs have strongly enhanced the capabilities of several analytical techniques, which have taken advantage of the high degree of transverse coherence provided. Free-electron lasers based on the harmonic up-conversion of an external coherent source (seed) are characterized also by a high degree of longitudinal coherence, since electrons inherit the coherence properties of the seed. For the state of the art, the shortest wavelength delivered to user experiments by an externally seeded FEL light source is about 4 nm. In this paper we demonstrate that pulses with a high longitudinal degree of coherence (first and second order) covering the water window and with photon energy extending up to 790 eV can be generated by exploiting the so-called nonlinear harmonic regime, which allows generation of radiation at harmonics of the resonant FEL wavelength. In order to show the suitability of the nonlinear harmonics generated by a seeded FEL for research in the water window and beyond, we report the results of two proof-of-principle experiments: one measuring the oxygen $K$-edge absorption in water (∼$530$ eV) and the other analyzing the spin dynamics of Fe and Co through magnetic small-angle x-ray scattering at their $L$ edges (707 and 780 eV, respectively)., Published by Inst., Woodbury, NY

Quantification of the relative ellipsoid zone reflectivity (rEZR) might be a structural surrogate parameter for an early disease progression in the context of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Within the European multicenter, cross-sectional MACUSTAR study, we have devised an automatic approach to determine the mean rEZR [arbitrary units, AU] at two independent visits in SD-OCT volume scans in study participants. Linear mixed-effects models were applied to analyze the association of AMD stage and AMD associated high-risk features including presence of pigmentary abnormalities, reticular pseudodrusen (RPD), volume of the retinal-pigment-epithelial–drusenoid-complex (RPEDC) with the rEZR. Intra-class correlation coefficients (ICC) were determined for rEZR reliability analysis. Within the overall study cohort (301 participants), we could observe decreased rEZR values (coefficient estimate ± standard error) of − 8.05 ± 2.44 AU (p = 0.0011) in the intermediate and of − 22.35 ± 3.28 AU (p < 0.0001) in the late AMD group. RPD presence was significantly associated with the rEZR in iAMD eyes (− 6.49 ± 3.14 AU; p = 0.0403), while there was a good ICC of 0.846 (95% confidence interval: 0.809; 0.876) in the overall study cohort. This study showed an association of rEZR with increasing disease severity and the presence of iAMD high-risk features. Further studies are necessary to evaluate the rEZR’s value as a novel biomarker for AMD and disease progression.

Precipitation in Europe shows natural fluctuations that differ considerably between seasons and geographical regions. A number of studies have linked local or seasonal rainfall variability to various long-distance air pressure differences in north-south or west-east direction. This paper presents the first continent-wide analysis of European rainfall variability on a month-by-month and country-by-country basis. We calculated Pearson r values for unsmoothed monthly rainfall data of 39 European countries over the period 1950-2019 with five potential climatic drivers, namely the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), the Arctic Oscillation (AO), the North Sea Caspian Pattern (NCP), and two indices of Mediterranean Oscillation (MOI2, WeMOI). For a variety of countries and months we found substantial and statistically significant r values of up to r = 0.7 and more. The dynamic temporal-spatial evolution of the Pearson correlations was mapped out across the continent, tracking the gradual or abrupt expansion, displacement and subsequent waning of the various effects over the course of the year. The correlation analysis was complemented by best subset multiple regression, controlling for intercorrelation of the potential drivers. Our results may help to improve short- to midterm rainfall prognoses in Europe and provide important calibration data for the further refinement of climate models.

European hydroclimate shows a high degree of variability on every time scale. The variability is controlled by natural processes such as Atlantic ocean cycles, changes in solar activity, volcanic eruptions and anthropogenic factors. This contribution concentrates on the solar influence on European precipitation, a relationship which has been documented by a large body of published case studies. Here we are concentrating on the period 1901–2015 for which we compare sunspot data with monthly precipitation series of 39 European countries by calculating Pearson correlation coefficients for a multi-year cross-correlation window. The coefficients have been mapped out across Europe with the aim to identify areas in which solar activity may have influenced precipitation. Results show that February precipitation in Central and Western Europe yields the strongest solar response with coefficients reaching up to +0.61. Rainfall in June–July is equally co-driven by solar activity changes, whereby the solar-influenced zone of rainfall shifts from the British Isles towards Eastern Europe during the course of summer. Other months with noteworthy solar responses are April, May and December. On a decadal scale, the correlation between precipitation and solar activity in central Europe appears to be mostly positive, both statistically and by visual curve comparison. Yet, best positive correlations coefficients of February, June, July and December are typically reached when the solar signal lags rainfall by 1.5–2 years. Taking into account cause and effect, it is suspected that increases in Central European rainfall are actually triggered by the solar minimum some 3–4 years before the rainfall month, rather than the lagging solar maximum. Similar lags of a few years occur between solar activity and the solar-synchronized North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) due to memory effects in the Atlantic. The literature review demonstrates that most multidecadal studies from Central Europe encountered a negative correlation between solar activity and rainfall, probably because short time lags of a few years are negligible on timescales beyond the 11 year solar Schwabe cycle. Flood frequency typically increases during times of low solar activity associated with NAO- conditions and more frequent blocking.

Study region Africa Study focus African rainfall shows significant year-to-year natural fluctuations that in part are linked to teleconnections associated with modes of variability in the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian oceans. A better understanding of African rainfall variability and potential drivers would help to better prepare African societies for anticipated droughts and floods by taking early precautionary action. Here we are presenting the first continent-wide analysis of African rainfall variability on a month-by-month and country-by-country basis. We have calculated Pearson r values for smoothed monthly rainfall data of 49 African countries over the period 1901–2017 which we compared to six potential climatic drivers of natural variability, namely AMO, NAO, ENSO (El Nino Southern Oscillation), Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO), Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) and solar activity changes. We allowed time lags of up to 11 months for each potential driver (66 months for solar activity). New hydrological insights for the region The dynamic temporal-spatial evolution of the seasonal Pearson correlations was mapped out across the continent, tracking the gradual or abrupt expansion, displacement and subsequent waning of the various effects over the course of the year. Relationships are complicated by characteristic time lags, non-stationary correlations and occasional phase shifts. Our empirical results may help to further improve short- to midterm rainfall prognoses in Africa and provide important calibration data for the further improvement of climate models.

Background Recruiting asymptomatic participants with early disease stages into studies is challenging and only little is known about facilitators and barriers to screening and recruitment of study participants. Thus we assessed factors associated with screening rates in the MACUSTAR study, a multi-centre, low-interventional cohort study of early stages of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Methods Screening rates per clinical site and per week were compiled and applicable recruitment factors were assigned to respective time periods. A generalized linear mixed-effects model including the most relevant recruitment factors identified via in-depth interviews with study personnel was fitted to the screening data. Only participants with intermediate AMD were considered. Results A total of 766 individual screenings within 87 weeks were available for analysis. The mean screening rate was 0.6 ± 0.9 screenings per week among all sites. The participation at investigator teleconferences (relative risk increase 1.466, 95% CI [1.018–2.112]), public holidays (relative risk decrease 0.466, 95% CI [0.367–0.591]) and reaching 80% of the site’s recruitment target (relative risk decrease 0.699, 95% CI [0.367–0.591]) were associated with the number of screenings at an individual site level. Conclusions Careful planning of screening activities is necessary when recruiting early disease stages in multi-centre observational or low-interventional studies. Conducting teleconferences with local investigators can increase screening rates. When planning recruitment, seasonal and saturation effects at clinical site level need to be taken into account.
