The effects of foliar application of Mo and use of N from cover crops (Crotalaria juncea L. and Canavalia ensiformis (L.) DC) on the performance of common beans were investigated in this study. Field experiments were carried out in a succession planting system (cover crops - common beans), and nitrate reductase activities were evaluated in the laboratory. The production of cover crops was done in a 2 x 4 factorial scheme installed in random blocks with four replications. The two cover crops sunn hemp and jack bean composed the first factor and the molibdenum doses (0, 40, 80, and 120 g ha-1) the second. These doses were applied as foliar fertilization using sodium molybdate (Na2MoO4) as Mo source. For bean cultivation, an unfertilized control treatment was evaluated.. Sunn hemp showed a linear positive response to Mo application in terms of shoot dry matter and N accumulation, while jack bean showed a quadratic negative response for shoot dry matter; for N accumulation, there was no adjustment of the regression models. Nitrate reductase activity in the common beans was up to three times higher at the Mo dose of 0 g ha-1 when compared to the treatments with Mo application to both cover crops. Cover crops or Mo doses had no significant effect on bean productivity.

Farmers are increasing the use of fertilizers in chestnut, the only cash crop produced in the mountainous areas of northeastern Portugal. This calls for more studies to guide them towards a more ecological intensification. The effects of three controlled-release fertilizers, two that release nutrients over three months (BoskGrow 20:05:20_3m, Exactyon 18:05:13_3m) and one over six months (Exactyon 18:05:12_6m), and an organic amendment authorized for organic farming (Humix 12:03:05) were compared with an untreated control during a three-year field trial (2019–2021). BoskGrow 20:05:20_3m, Exactyon 18:05:13_3m and Humix 12:03:05 gave significantly higher nut yields (90.6 to 97.0 kg tree−1, average 2019 + 2021) than Exactyon 18:05:12_6m (66.3 kg tree−1) and the control (69.5 kg tree−1). Leaf concentrations of nitrogen and potassium tended to be higher in the BoskGrow 20:05:20_3m and Exactyon 18:05:13_3m treatments, and they were stated as the most important causes in the establishment of the two productive groups. Humix 12:03:05, although less concentrated in nutrients, led to a chestnut yield at the level of the most productive treatments, possibly due to the multiple positive effects of organic matter on soil and plants. Under the conditions of this experiment, where rainfall is low in the summer, fertilizers whose nutrient release takes a long time, such as Exactyon 18:05:12_6m, seem not to be a good fertilization option due to reduced nutrient uptake and increased levels of soil inorganic nitrogen at the end of the growing season. Humix 12:03:05 emerged as a possible solution for organic producers. The application of fertilizers as a topdressing in maize raises serious concerns because too much fertilizer is retained in the upper leaves, causing burning to the tissues. In this study, the use of a controlled-release and a stabilized fertilizer (with 3, 4-dimethylpyrazole phosphate) was compared with the application of a conventional fertilizer split into two equivalent applications in a forage maize-oats cropping system. In maize, 100 and 200 kg N ha−1 of different fertilizers were used in addition to an unfertilized control. The oat crop was not fertilized, since it served only as a winter catch crop. Maize dry matter (DM) yield increased significantly with N rate only in 2019, being the second growing season, with the control showing the lowest average value (7.1 t ha−1). The most fertilized treatments (200 kg N ha−1) gave the highest DM yields, ranging between 14.2 and 16.7 t ha−1, but with no significant differences between them. Oats had a relevant role as a catch crop recovering residual N that could have potentially been lost from the soil. Stalk nitrate concentration proved to be very sensitive to N fertilization (varying from 150.4 to 1945.6 mg kg−1 in 2018 and 494.9 to 1574.9 mg kg−1 in 2019), showing great potential as a tool of N management. These three fertilization strategies seem to be valid options that farmers can consider, after incorporating technical-economic information related to equipment suitability and the price of fertilizers. System fertilization is characterized by partial or total fertilizer application at the predecessor crop; and it can be a viable practice to soybean crop. This study aimed to determine the fertilizer management and fertilizer levels for black oat-soybean cropping system, in high fertility soils and no-tillage system. The field trial was conducted in a bifactorial scheme, consisting of six environments, by combination of locations (Bom Sucesso do Sul - Paraná, Itapejara d'Oeste - Paraná) and fertilization management (all fertilization in black oat; splitting with 50% in black oat and 50% in soybean, all fertilization in soybean), and four fertilizer levels (0, 100, 200 and 300%) defined according to soil analysis and production expected. The evaluated traits were dry mass production, N, P and K nutrient accumulation of straw, dry mass remaining of black oat crop; and plant height, number of pods per plant, thousand grain weight, grain yield for soybean crop. Higher black oat dry mass production was observed at higher fertilization level. The fertilizer anticipation in black oat crop had better performance. Phosphorus and potassium accumulation increased linearly with fertilizer level increase. For N, the highest accumulated value occurred at the 200%, decreasing at the 300% of fertilizer level. The soybean crop had no influence in grain yield considering fertilization management, anticipation or splitting, and fertilizer levels. Thus, the system fertilization can be a viable practice, and favor black oat dry mass production and soybean development.

Este estudo teve por objetivo avaliar diferentes níveis de suplementação em caprinos, sob pastejo de aveia preta, e sua influência na resistência do solo à penetração e no rendimento de grãos de milho, cultivado em sucessão com crescentes doses de N em cobertura. No inverno os tratamentos se constituíram do uso de suplemento alimentar correspondente a 0, 5, 10 e 15 g kg-1 do peso vivo de fêmeas de caprinos da raça Boer, com 10 meses de idade, em pastejo de aveia preta cv. IAPAR 61 e um tratamento sem pastejo. No verão as parcelas foram subdivididas e aplicadas doses crescentes de N em cobertura na cultura do milho (0, 50, 100 e 150 kg ha-1 de N na forma de ureia). No inverno foram avaliados: altura de dossel, massa de forragem e produção da forragem; carga e ganho de peso animal; e resistência do solo à penetração. No verão foram avaliados os componentes de rendimento do milho. Maiores níveis de suplementação, no inverno, aumenta a capacidade suporte da área de pastagem, o que eleva a intensidade de pisoteio e, consequentemente, a resistência do solo à penetração na camada superficial, sem afetar, no entanto, o rendimento de grãos de milho cultivado em sucessão. O pastejo no inverno, quando realizado respeitando a altura da forragem e adubação, reduz a necessidade de N em cobertura no verão para a obtenção do mesmo rendimento de grãos de milho de áreas sem pastejo no inverno.

Com a crescente demanda por alimentos, surge a necessidade de intensificação no uso do solo, convergindo para sistemas de produção com características de sustentabilidade. Uma alternativa, aplicada à agricultura, é a adoção de sistemas integrados de produção agropecuária, como exemplo está o sistema silvipastoril. A integração entre sistemas de produções visa maximizar o uso dos recursos naturais e dos insumos, com menos impacto sobre o ambiente e maior ganho em produtividade da área. Nesse sentido, os efeitos em longo prazo, promovidos por sistemas silvipastoris nos atributos físicos do solo, devem ser estudados e relatados na literatura científica. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a resistência mecânica do solo à penetração (RMP) em faixas longitudinais distribuídas entre linhas de árvores plantadas em duas disposições, Leste-Oeste e Norte-Sul, de um solo sob um sistema silvipastoril após 11 anos de sua implantação. A espécie arbórea implantada em 2006 foi a Grevillea robusta e, como espécie forrageira, a Tifton 85 (Cynodon spp.) sob pastejo com lotação rotacionada de bovinos de leite. Para determinação da RMP foram avaliadas as camadas de solo de 0,0-0,05; 0,05-0,10; 0,10-0,20 e 0,20-0,40m de profundidade com auxílio de penetrômetro digital. Utilizou-se o delineamento experimental de blocos ao acaso. As disposições das árvores não foram consideradas como fator experimental e as análises feitas isoladamente dentro das disposições Leste-Oeste e Norte-Sul. Os maiores valores de RMP foram observados na camada de 0,05-0,10 m do solo e nas áreas avaliadas com maior proximidade das árvores, indicando o efeito do animal, que permanece nesses locais por mais tempo devido ao conforto térmico proporcionado pela sobra das árvores. A serapilheira depositada no solo pelas árvores e sistema radicular da espécie forrageira deve ter auxiliado para que os níveis de RMP fossem menores na superfície do solo, considerando o incremento nos teores de matéria orgânica na superfície do solo. O efeito do sistema radicular da espécie arbórea pode ter contribuído para os maiores valores de RMP na profundidade de 0,20 a 0,40m para disposição LesteOeste.

Calcium increases postharvest conservation of apples. Consequently, several calcium foliar sprays are generally applied to apple trees. Due to the low mobility of calcium in the phloem, foliar sprays may have low efficiency to supply calcium in the fruits. This study aimed to evaluate the efficiency of different sources of calcium applied to the soil, compared to the foliar application, on the content of calcium in the soil, leaves and fruits, on yield and fruit quality of ‘Fuji’ apple trees. The following treatments were tested: control, soil application of calcium chloride, gypsum, Nitrabor®, hydrated lime and pulp sludge, and foliar application of calcium chloride. For all sources in the soil, 80 kg of calcium ha-1 year-1 were applied. For the foliar treatment, ten sprays with 0.4 % of calcium chloride were performed. The experiment was conducted in two seasons (2008/2009 and 2009/2010), in a complete randomized blocks design, with four replicates and two apple trees per plot. Even in a soil with high calcium content, the sources of calcium increase the calcium content in the soil and leaves, as well as the firmness of apples stored for 90 days. The use of gypsum and pulp sludge increase the calcium content in the flesh of ‘Fuji’ apples after two successive applications (2009/2010). The sources of calcium applied to the soil can replace the leaf application commonly used in apple orchards, in order to reduce production costs, provided there is no water restriction in the orchard.

Two soil amendments, biochar and zeolites, were evaluated in their potential for increasing crop productivity and agro-system sustainability. The effect of biochar and zeolites, in combination with four nitrogen (N) rates [0 (N0), 50 (N50), 100 (N100), and 200 (N200) kg ha−1], on crop yield, N use efficiency, and soil properties was evaluated in a cropping system of irrigated forage maize (Zea mays L.) grown in summer and oats (Avena sativa L.) grown in winter as a catch crop. Biochar increased soil organic carbon (C), pH, cation exchange capacity (CEC), and extractable phosphorus (P), but strongly reduced N recovery in the set of the four cropping cycles. In biochar-amended plots, N50 had a negative apparent N recovery (− 21%), indicating that less N was recovered by the plants than in the N0 treatment without biochar. Biochar reduced maize dry matter (DM) yield by 15.6% in comparison to the untreated control, indicating N immobilization by biochar at low N rates (N0 and N50). Zeolites did not influence crop productivity or soil properties, except for the increase in extractable K, probably the result of its initial K content. N application to maize significantly increased the productivity of both crops, including that of the non-fertilized oats. Under the conditions of this experiment, biochar and zeolites did not prove to be useful soil amendments to increase crop DM yield in the short-term. The use of biochar increased soil organic C, which associated to a high N rate can enable the dual objective of maintaining productivity and the sustainability of the agro-system. Biofertilizers of mycorrhizal fungi have been mainly tested in nutrient-limited soils or harsh environmental conditions, which have helped to highlight their beneficial role in plant growth. However, their benefits in stress-free growing conditions have not yet been properly proven. In this work, a commercial mycorrhizal fungi, composed of 18 ecto and endomycorrhizal fungi, was tested in a pot experiment with young olive cuttings, under an experimental apparatus allowing the evaluation of dry matter yield and plant nutritional status after one and two years of growth. The results highlighted the role of the mycorrhiza in increasing P bioavailability, either evaluated by soil P labile fraction or through tissue P concentration. The role of mycorrhiza in increasing soil organic C was also relevant (7% higher than the control). Mycorrhiza had little effect on the uptake of other nutrients and on the alleviation of excessive levels of metals, in particular Fe, in the shoots. Instead, olive showed its own exclusion mechanisms, registering root Fe levels 50 times higher than in shoots. Mycorrhiza did not improve plant growth compared to the other fertilized treatments. The increase in plant dry matter observed in the mycorrhiza treatment in comparison to the control was probably due to the initial content of the commercial product of N, P and K (3% N, 3% P2O5 and 3% K2O). Under the conditions of this experiment, the farmer would not benefit from the use of this mycorrhizal fungi, but it nevertheless proved its value for agriculture, suggesting that commercial products should be targeted more towards specific purposes, than for generalized uses. The objective of this work was to evaluate genotypes of wheat depending on doses of N in order to determine the best value of N and the components of productivity of wheat. Experiment was carried out in Pato Branco—PR in soil classified as Eutrophic typical RED LATOSOL. The experimental design was randomized blocks, in 3 × 5 (× N doses genotypes), with three repetitions. The genotypes were: CD 108, CD 115 and BRS 220, and the doses of n were: zero; 20; 40; 80 and 120 kg of N&middotha-1, applied at the beginning of tillering. After harvest assessed number of Spike (NE), Tang (EC) length, grains per Spike (GE), mass of thousand grains (MMG), grain yield (R) and weight/HL (PH), application of N increased the NE and R, and however decreased to MMG. The genotypes differed among themselves, featuring better performance of the NE (the BRS 220), CE (the CD 115) and R (the CD 108). There were positive correlations between the doses of N with the NE and R and be-tween NE with the R, and negative correlation between doses of N with the MMG. It is concluded that the NE is the main factor that affects the R with N supply.

O milho e uma cultura de alto potencial produtivo, mas para atingir o seu maximo, a adubacao, em especial a nitrogenada, e fundamental. O nitrogenio (N) e um elemento dinâmico no solo e seu comportamento pode ser alterado em funcao da dose e da epoca de aplicacao. Esse trabalho teve por objetivo avaliar a eficiencia de epocas de aplicacao de N na cultura do milho cultivado no sistema plantio direto. Os tratamentos foram compostos por T1 = 120-30-00, T2 = 90-30-30, T3 = 60-30-60, T4 = 30-30-90 e T5 = 00-30-120, correspondendo a quantidade de N, em kg ha -1 , aplicado em pre-semeadura (4 a 19 dias antes da semeadura), semeadura e cobertura do milho (4 a 6 folhas), respectivamente. Foram avaliados o teor de N na folha indice, componentes do rendimento e o rendimento de graos. As diferentes epocas de aplicacao de N em milho nao influenciaram os teores foliares desse elemento e tambem nao afetaram os componentes de rendimento. Para as condicoes desse estudo, a adubacao nitrogenada de cobertura, aplicada em totalidade na pre-semeadura do milho, foi tao eficiente em produtividade quanto o metodo tradicional de adubacao que preconiza aplicacao de N em cobertura no estadio vegetativo da cultura.

Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) requires good soil fertility. Brazil is characterized by acidic soils which reduce the potential of the crop. Generally, liming is incorporated into the soil, but in tillage systems it is inadvisable. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of the lime application method and dose on pH, Al+3, V % and Ca+Mg in the soil and on dry matter yield of alfalfa cultivated under a consolidated no-tillage system. The experiment was conducted at the Experimental Station of Paraná Agronomic Institute, located in Pato Branco city, in Paraná state. The plots consisted of the types of lime application (plowing+harrowing, subsoil and surface), the sub-plots was the lime dose (0, 2, 4, 6 and 8 Mg ha-1) and the sub-sub-plots were the sampled soil depth (0-5; 5-10; 10-20 and 20-30 cm). The results show the application of lime, even superficially, caused increases in pH, concentration of Ca and Mg and base saturation of the soil, while also reducing the concentration of Al, especially in the surface layers of the soil. The practice of plowing and harrowing or of subsoiling, with the aim of lime incorporation in a consolidated no-tillage system is unnecessary. If it is required, the application of lime to the soil should be done superficially for alfalfa cultivated in this system. A alfafa (Medicago sativa L.) é uma das plantas mais exigentes em nutrientes e em fertilidade do solo. Por sua vez, o Brasil possui solos ácidos que podem reduzir o potencial produtivo das culturas. Recomenda-se que o calcário seja incorporado ao solo, contudo em sistemas de plantio direto isto é desaconselhado. Este trabalho tem por objetivo avaliar doses e formas de aplicação de calcário para alfafa cultivada em sistema plantio direto consolidado. O experimento foi conduzido na Estação Experimental do Instituto Agronômico do Paraná, localizada no Município de Pato Branco - PR. As parcelas constituíram-se das formas de aplicação de calcário (superficial, subsolador, aração+gradagem), as sub-parcelas pelas doses de calcário (0; 2; 4; 6 e 8 Mg ha-1) e as sub-subparcelas pelas profundidades de solo amostradas (0-5; 5-10; 10-20 e 20-30 cm). Os resultados mostraram que a aplicação de calcário, provocou aumentos de pH, dos teores de Ca e de Mg e da saturação por bases do solo até a camada de 20-30 cm de profundidade. Em geral não se constatou influência da forma de aplicação de calcário sobre a taxa de acúmulo de matéria seca. Não houve resposta da taxa de acúmulo diária da alfafa com doses de calcário superiores a 2 Mg ha-1. A prática de aração e gradagem ou de subsolagem, visando à incorporação de calcário no sistema de plantio direto consolidado, é desnecessária recomendando-se que a aplicação de calcário no solo seja feita de forma superficial.

No sul do Brasil, há ocorrência espontânea de papuã (Urochloa plantaginea (Link) R.D. Webster), nas lavouras, no período de verão, sendo que essa planta possui grande potencial forrageiro. Neste trabalho, objetivou-se avaliar as alterações ocorridas nas características físicas e na matéria orgânica do solo, em pasto de papuã, com diferentes alturas de manejo, na presença e na ausência de pisoteio animal. O trabalho foi realizado na Estação Experimental do IAPAR, no município de Pato Branco, Paraná. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi o de blocos casualizados com três repetições. Os tratamentos foram arranjados em esquema bifatorial, com parcelas subdivididas, durante o período de pastejo. As parcelas receberam os níveis do fator altura de manejo de pasto de papuã (0,1; 0,2; 0,3 e 0,4 m), enquanto as subparcelas foram constituídas de áreas com (pastejadas por cabras) e sem pisoteio animal (corte manual). Foram avaliados, após o período de pastejo, os teores de matéria orgânica, a densidade, a porosidade total, a macro e a microporosidades do solo. De maneira geral, a altura de manejo do papuã, na presença, ou não, de pisoteio animal, não alterou significativamente as características físicas e a matéria orgânica do solo, avaliadas após o primeiro ciclo de aplicação dos tratamentos. O pisoteio animal não causou compactação adicional e, mesmo com pastejo animal, os teores de matéria orgânica no solo mantiveram-se altos. In southern Brazil there is spontaneous occurrence of alexandergrass (Urochloa plantaginea (Link) R.D. Webster) in crops during summer, and this plant has great potential forage production. The objective of this study was to evaluate the changes in physical characteristics and soil organic matter in pastures of Alexandergrass with different sward heights, in the presence and absence of animal trampling. The experiment was conducted at the Experimental Station IAPAR, in Pato Branco. The experimental design was randomized blocks with three replications. The treatments were arranged in a split-plot factorial model during the grazing period. The plots consisted of levels of the factor height of pasture management (0.1, 0.2, 0.3 and 0.4 m), while the subplots consisted of areas with (grazed by goats) and without animal trampling (manual cutting). After the grazing period, the variables organic matter levels, bulk density, total porosity, macro and micro porosities of the soil were evaluated. Generally, the management height of alexandergrass, in the presence or absence of trampling, did not significantly affect the physical characteristics and soil organic matter after the first cycle of treatment application. Animal trampling caused no additional compression and even with animal grazing, the organic matter levels in the soil remained high.

No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2016-01-01 The aim of this study was to evaluate the behavior of chemical properties and crop yields during five years after liming, in a consolidated no-tillage system area and indicate a base saturation index to serve as a criterion for recommendation. The experiment was conducted in a randomized complete block design with four repetitions, being the treatments the five lime doses (0, 2.4, 4.8, 7.2 and 9.6 Mg ha-1) applied and maintained on the soil surface. Soil chemical properties were evaluated in eight soil sampling, in the layers 0 to 0.025; 0.025 to 0.05; 0.05 to 0.10; 0.10 to 0.15; 0.15 to 0.20 and 0.20 to 0.40 m, besides crop grain yield (wheat, soybean and corn) and black oat dry matter yield, totaling five years of evaluation. The surface liming in no-tillage system increased the exchangeable magnesium and calcium contents, base saturation and soil pH and reduced the exchangeable aluminum content. The cumulative grain yield (six crops) and black oat dry matter yield (three crops) was not influenced by liming. These results suggested, from this study conditions, that the value of 50% of base saturation should be adopted as a criterion for liming for crops implanted under consolidated no-tillage systems. Poultry litter is an important nutrient source in agriculture, although little information is available regarding its decomposition rate and nutrient release. To evaluate these processes, poultry litter (PL) was applied to the soil to supply 100, 200 and 300 kg ha-1 N contained in 4,953, 9,907 and 14,860 kg ha-1 PL, respectively. The litter bag technique was used to monitor the process of decomposition and nutrient release from the litter. These bags were left on the soil surface and collected periodically (after 15, 30, 60, 90, 120, 150, 180, 210, 240, 270, 300, 330, and 365 days). The dry matter (DM) loss was highest (35 %) after the first 30 days of field incubation. The highest nutrient release occurred in the first 60 days on the field, when 40, 34, 91, and 39 %, respectively, of N, P, K, and Ca of the initial PL dry matter (4,860 kg ha-1) was already released to the soil. In absolute terms, these percentages represent 40, 23, 134, and 69 kg ha-1 of N, P, K, and Ca and these values doubled and tripled as the PL fertilization rates increased to 9,907 and 14,860 kg ha-1, respectively. After one year of field incubation, the residual contents in the litter were 27, 15, 18 and 30 % of the initial DM , and N, P and Ca, respectively. The release rate of K was the fastest and 91 % of the K had been released from the PL after 30 days of field incubation. Cama de aviário é uma importante fonte de nutrientes para a agricultura, porém existem poucas informações em relação à sua taxa de decomposição e liberação de nutrientes. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a taxa de decomposição e liberação de nutrientes da cama de aviário. A adubação foi realizada a fim de suprir 100, 200 e 300 kg ha-1 de N; para isso, foram aplicados ao solo 4.953, 9.907 e 14.860 kg ha-1 de cama. Para monitorar o processo de decomposição e liberação de nutrientes da cama, utilizou-se a técnica dos sacos de decomposição, os quais foram deixados na superfície do solo e recolhidos após 15, 30, 60, 90, 120, 150, 180, 210, 240, 270, 300, 330 e 365 dias. As maiores perdas de matéria seca (MS) (35 %) foram verificadas nos primeiros 30 dias de incubação em campo. As maiores taxas de liberação de nutrientes ocorreram nos primeiros 60 dias de incubação em campo. Nesse período, 40, 34, 91 e 39 % do N, P, K e Ca encontrados na matéria seca inicial da cama (4.860 kg ha-1) já haviam sido liberados ao solo. Em valores absolutos, essas porcentagens representam 40, 23, 134 e 69 kg ha-1 de N, P, K e Ca, que duplicaram e triplicaram à medida que a adubação com cama de aviário passou de 4.953 kg ha-1 para 9.907 e 14.860 kg ha-1. Após um ano de incubação em campo, a cama apresentou residual de 27, 15,7, 18 e 30 % do valor inicial de MS e teor de N, P e Ca, respectivamente. O K apresentou a taxa de liberação mais rápida: após 30 dias de incubação em campo, 91 % do K encontrado na cama já havia sido liberado ao solo.

Brazil southern region edaphoclimatic conditions allow farmers to grow perennial winter legumes. However, at summer, a seasonality occurs in the production of these species allowing the grown of annual crops such as corn. In this way, interference between white clover (Trifolium repens L.) living mulch and corn crop (Zea mays L.) was studied using a clover sward established after one and two growing season in relation to the usual system of corn grown over black oat straw aiming to study the relationships occurring in this intercrop, such as white clover herbicide suppression, competition and its nitrogen effects on corn yield as well as its potential to became perennial after corn harvest. White clover suppression management was established in the main plots and corn nitrogen fertilization (0, 60, 120, 180 kg ha-1) was performed in the subplots (4.2 × 8 m) in a randomized block design with four replications. White clover suppression managements were: (i) partial suppression achieved by mowing the plots at the corn seeding day; (ii) partial suppression achieved by mowing plus chemically broadcast application of 2.4-D; (iii) partial suppression achieved by a chemically broadcast application of glyphosate. Corn grain yields ranged from 3.0 to 12.2 Mg ha-1. Nitrogen input and herbicide management are important elements to reduce white clover competition and increase corn yield. It is possible to manage white clover as living mulch in corn with its full recovery after corn harvest without replanting. Clover with 1 cycle is easier suppressed than perennial clover sward and can be handled in intercropping with corn without affecting grain yield, with ability to resume growth in the next growing season.

O Esterco líquido de suínos (ELS) pode ser usado como fertilizante orgânico, mas seu uso incorreto pode contaminar o solo e os mananciais de água. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o efeito da adição de nutrientes ao solo, através do ELS, sobre a produção de matéria seca (MS) e o acúmulo de nutrientes de uma pastagem de aveia branca+azevém (Avena sativa + Lolium multiflorum). Um experimento foi realizado de 2004 a 2006, no campo experimental da UTFPR, em Pato Branco, Paraná, Brasil. O solo era um Latossolo Vermelho distroférrico. Diferentes doses (0, 20, 40, 80 e 120m³ ha-1) de ELS foram aplicadas na pastagem, aos 20 e 61 dias após a emergência (DAE) da pastagem, em 2004, e aos 30 e 67DAE, em 2005. Outras duas aplicações foram realizadas nas culturas de verão, milho em 2004 e soja em 2005, respectivamente. A maior produção de MS foi obtida com a dose de 120m³ ha-1 de ELS, tanto no primeiro, quanto no segundo ano. A produção de matéria seca de pastagens anuais de inverno normalmente é baixa em virtude da limitação de nutrientes disponíveis no solo, a qual pode ser corrigida com o uso de esterco líquido de suínos (ELS). Realizou-se um experimento, de maio a novembro de 2003, visando avaliar a eficiência do esterco líquido de suínos sobre a produção de matéria seca e N-cobertura vegetal da mistura de aveia e azevém, bem como sobre alguns atributos químicos de um Latossolo Vermelho distroférrico, nas camadas de 0-5, 5-10 e 10-20 cm. O delineamento experimental foi o de blocos ao acaso, com quatro repetições, sendo constituído por quatro tratamentos, 0, 20, 40 e 80 m³ ha-1 de ELS, aplicados aos 48 e aos 116 dias após emergência das culturas. A aplicação de 80 m³ ha-1 resultou em aumento de 34 % de matéria seca acumulada em relação à testemunha. À medida que as doses de ELS foram aplicadas, houve aumento dos teores de N mineral apenas na camada de solo de 0-5 cm de profundidade. A aplicação de ELS influenciou o aumento dos teores de K no solo apenas na camada de 0-5 cm de profundidade e provocou aumento no pH e diminuição do Al3+ trocável até 20 cm de profundidade. Houve aumento na quantidade de N na cobertura vegetal conforme as doses de ELS aplicadas, com acréscimo de 0,09 mg dm-3 para cada m³ de ELS aplicado.Dry matter production of winter annual pastures is usually low due to the limited soil nutrient availability, which can be amended by the use of liquid swine manure (LSM). This experiment, carried out from May to November 2003, aimed to evaluate the efficiency of LSM in the production and accumulation of dry matter, and N-leaf concentration of an oat/Italian rye grass mixture, as well as the effect on some chemical attributes of an Oxisol in the soil layers 0-5, 5-10 and 10-20 cm soil layers. The experiment was arranged in a complete randomized block design with four replications. The treatments were four LSM doses (0; 20; 40 and 80 m³ ha-1), applied 48 and 116 days after crop emergence. The application of 80 m³ ha-1 of SLM resulted in a 34 %increase in accumulated dry matter as compared to the control treatment (no SLM application). It was observed that higher LSM doses increased mineral nitrogen concentration only in the 0-5 cm soil layer. LSM application increased K concentration only in the 0-5 cm soil layer, increased the pH and reduced the Al3+ concentration up to 20 soil depth. LSM doses increased leaf nitrogen concentration by 0.09 mg km for each m³ of applied LSM.

Este trabalho foi realizado com o objetivo de avaliar o efeito da inclusão de plantas de trevo (Trifolium spp) sob pastejo em sistema de integração lavoura-pecuária sobre a quantidade de N fixada, a produtividade, os componentes de rendimento da cultura de milho e os teores de nitrato no solo. O delineamento utilizado foi de blocos ao acaso, com três repetições, em que as parcelas foram constituídas dos resíduos de espécie forrageira (trevo e aveia) e as subparcelas, das quatro doses de N em cobertura (0; 60; 120; e 240 kg/ha). Durante o período de cultivo do milho (2004/2005), as parcelas contendo resíduo de trevo apresentaram maiores de teores de N-nitrato na profundidade de 0-5 cm em comparação àquelas cultivadas anteriormente com aveia, indicando que a cultura de milho encontraria praticamente todo o suprimento de nitrogênio, em decorrência do cultivo anterior de trevos pastejados. Não foram observados indícios de lixiviação de nitratos provocados pelos resíduos de leguminosas até a camada de 20 cm de profundidade do solo. No segundo ano de experimento, plantas de trevo pastejadas contribuíram, no mínimo, com suprimento de N de 90 kg/ha, como resultado da fixação biológica para a cultura de milho. No entanto, plantas de milho cultivadas sobre resíduos de aveia apresentaram máxima produtividade de grãos com aplicação de 180 kg/ha de N.The objective of this research was to study the effect of including grazed clover plants, in crop-pasture systems, on the amount of N fixed, maize productivity and yield components, and soil nitrate concentration. It was used a split-plot arrangement in a complete randomized block design, with three replications per treatment. The main plots were formed by two types of residues of winter pastures (oat and clover) and the split-plots were formed by different doses of broadcasted N in the urea form (0, 60, 120, and 240 kg/ha N). The effect of the previous residue was observed during all periods of the corn crop (2004/2005). All plots that contained clover residue presented greater N-nitrate concentration in the soil layer of 0-5 cm compared to those plots cultivated previously with oats. These results showed that the white clover residues after grazing would provide practically all nitrogen demand by the maize crop. It was not observed nitrate leaching caused by legume residues until the depth of 20 cm. In the second experimental year, the clover residue contributed, at the very least, with 90 kg/ha of N, resultant from the N biological fixation, to the corn crop. However, maize plants cultivated on oat residual mulch showed maximum grain yield under 180 kg/ha of N-fertilizer.

Calcium increases postharvest conservation of apples. Consequently, several calcium foliar sprays are generally applied to apple trees. Due to the low mobility of calcium in the phloem, foliar sprays may have low efficiency to supply calcium in the fruits. This study aimed to evaluate the efficiency of different sources of calcium applied to the soil, compared to the foliar application, on the content of calcium in the soil, leaves and fruits, on yield and fruit quality of ‘Fuji’ apple trees. The following treatments were tested: control, soil application of calcium chloride, gypsum, Nitrabor®, hydrated lime and pulp sludge, and foliar application of calcium chloride. For all sources in the soil, 80 kg of calcium ha-1 year-1 were applied. For the foliar treatment, ten sprays with 0.4 % of calcium chloride were performed. The experiment was conducted in two seasons (2008/2009 and 2009/2010), in a complete randomized blocks design, with four replicates and two apple trees per plot. Even in a soil with high calcium content, the sources of calcium increase the calcium content in the soil and leaves, as well as the firmness of apples stored for 90 days. The use of gypsum and pulp sludge increase the calcium content in the flesh of ‘Fuji’ apples after two successive applications (2009/2010). The sources of calcium applied to the soil can replace the leaf application commonly used in apple orchards, in order to reduce production costs, provided there is no water restriction in the orchard. RESUMOO cálcio aumenta a conservação pós-colheita de maçãs. Por isso, são realizadas várias pulverizações via foliar em macieira. Devido à baixa mobilidade do cálcio no floema, a aplicação foliar pode ter baixa eficiência para suprir o cálcio nos frutos. Este trabalho objetivou verificar a eficiência de diferentes fontes de cálcio aplicadas ao solo, em comparação à aplicação foliar, nos teores de cálcio no solo, folhas e frutos, na produtividade e na qualidade de frutos de macieira ‘Fuji’. Foram aplicados os seguintes tratamentos: controle, cloreto de cálcio, gesso agrícola, Nitrabor®, cal hidratada e borra de celulose via solo e cloreto de cálcio via foliar. Para todas as fontes utilizadas no solo, aplicaram-se 80 kg de cálcio ha-1 ano-1. No tratamento via foliar foram realizadas dez pulverizações com cloreto de cálcio 0,4 %, durante o ciclo. O experimento foi conduzido em duas safras (2008/2009 e 2009/2010), utilizando-se o delineamento em blocos ao acaso, com quatro repetições, contendo duas macieiras por unidade experimental. Mesmo em solo com alto teor de cálcio, as fontes de cálcio aplicadas aumentam o teor de cálcio no solo e folhas, bem como a firmeza de maçãs armazenadas por 90 dias. O uso de gesso agrícola e de borra de celulose incrementam o cálcio na polpa de maçãs ‘Fuji’ após duas aplicações sucessivas (2009/2010). As fontes de cálcio aplicadas ao solo podem substituir a aplicação foliar comumente utilizada em pomares de macieira, visando a reduzir os custos de produção, desde que não haja restrição hídrica no pomar.

Os tratamentos consistiram de quatro níveis de adubação nitrogenada: sem adição de nitrogênio, 40, 80 e 120 kg ha-1 e seis manejos outonais: quatro com o cultivo de espécies de cobertura (ervilha forrageira, ervilhaca comum, nabo forrageiro e tremoço), um cultivo de feijoeiro com fins comerciais e outro com a permanência em pousio no período compreendido entre a colheita do milho e a semeadura do trigo. O delineamento experimental foi o de blocos ao acaso em esquema fatorial, com três repetições. O rendimento de proteína aumentou linearmente com a aplicação de nitrogênio mineral. As doses de 80 e 120 kg ha-1 de nitrogênio afetaram positivamente o desempenho dos parâmetros indicativos da qualidade industrial. A ervilha forrageira, o nabo forrageiro e a ervilhaca comum permitem combinar indíces de qualidade tecnológica ideais para panificação e satisfatórios patamares de produtividade de grãos, reduzindo a demanda de adubação nitrogenada mineral. The nitrogen rates of 80 and 120 kg ha-1 improved the baking wheat quality. The forage pea, oilseed radish and common pea allowed ideal index of baking quality and satisfactory crop yield, reducing the demand for mineral N fertilization.

Pouco se sabe sobre os benefícios do cultivo de adubos verdes sobre o desempenho da cultura do trigo, cultivada em sucessão e, até que ponto, pode substituir ou reduzir a adubação nitrogenada mineral. Objetivou-se com o presente trabalho avaliar a produção e decomposição de matéria seca bem como o acúmulo e liberação de nutrientes de plantas de cobertura de solo (nabo forrageiro, ervilhaca comum, ervilha forrageira, tremoço e feijoeiro) e quantificar seus efeitos sobre o desempenho da cultura do trigo, cultivada em sucessão, sob diferentes doses de adubação nitrogenada (sem adição de nitrogênio, 40, 80 e 120 kg ha-1). O experimento foi desenvolvido no município de Pato Branco (PR), em duas safras agrícolas, em sistema de plantio direto. O nabo forrageiro e o tremoço acumularam as maiores quantidades de cálcio e potássio. A ervilha forrageira e o nabo forrageiro destacam-se pela produção de matéria seca, acúmulo de nitrogênio, fósforo, potássio, bem como pela decomposição e liberação de nitrogênio para a cultura do trigo em estádios fenológicos de maior demanda deste nutriente. A relação C/N (superior a 40) dos restos culturais do milho e feijoeiro não possibilitou equilíbrio entre os processos de mineralização e imobilização. Os adubos verdes promoveram acréscimos significativos na produtividade de grãos em comparação ao pousio. Houve resposta do trigo à aplicação de nitrogênio mineral, e esta foi dependente da planta de cobertura antecessora.There are few studies about the benefits of green manure on wheat performance grown in succession as source of nitrogen. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the dry matter production and nutrient accumulation in wheat and the dry matter decomposition and nutrient release of cover crops forage turnip, common vetch, forage pea, lupine and bean and quantify their effects over wheat crop performance sown in succession under different nitrogen rates (without N addition, 40, 80 and 120 kg ha-1). The experiment was carried out in Pato Branco (PR, Brazil) during two crop seasons in no-tillage system. Oilseed radish and lupine accumulated the largest amounts of calcium and potassium. Forage pea and oilseed radish stand out with the highest dry matter production, nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium accumulation. Forage pea and oilseed radish also decomposed faster and released nitrogen to wheat at growth stages with high demand for this nutrient. The C/N ratio (above at 40) as evidenced by the maize straw and bean residue did not allow the adequate balance between mineralization and immobilization process. Cover crops promoted significant increases in wheat grain yield compared to fallow. There was a wheat response to mineral nitrogen rates, and this was dependent on the green manures cultivated before wheat.

A atividade leiteira é fundamental para a pequena propriedade do sudoeste do Paraná. Este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar o efeito de épocas de corte de pastagem de aveia e azevém, com e sem adubação nitrogenada, sobre a produção de matéria seca e a qualidade da pastagem. O experimento foi conduzido em Pato Branco, PR, num delineamento de blocos ao acaso, com parcelas subdivididas e quatro repetições. Nas parcelas, fez-se uso de adubação nitrogenada de cobertura (0 e 100 Kg de N ha-1), na forma de ureia, e, nas subparcelas, foram avaliadas três épocas de corte de pastagem de aveia e azevém (30, 45 e 60 dias após a emergência). A aplicação de nitrogênio proporcionou um acúmulo de massa de 1133 Kg de MS ha-1, aos 45 dias após a emergência, próximo daquele considerado ideal para início de pastejo. O primeiro corte nessa época, combinado com o uso de nitrogênio, também favoreceu a capacidade de rebrota da pastagem, pois 30 dias após esse corte, o acúmulo de massa alcançou 2398 Kg de MS ha- 1. A adubação nitrogenada aumentou a quantidade de folhas de aveia na pastagem, fato que contribuiu para que o teor de proteína bruta fosse de 27%, indicando alta qualidade do material. Dairy farming represents an important activity to small farmers, in south-west of Parana State, Brazil. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of the harvest period of oat and rye grass pastures, with and without nitrogen fertilization, on dry matter and pasture quality in order to determine the best time to start grazing. The experiment was carried out in Pato Branco, PR, in a randomized block design in split plot arrangement, with four repetitions. The main plot consisted of nitrogen fertilization levels (0 and 100 kg ha-1 of N), in the form of urea. The sub plots consisted of three cutting times of oat and rye grass pasture (30, 45 and 60 days after plants cropping up). The nitrogen applied provided dry mass accumulation of 1133 kg DM ha-1 45 days after emergence, close to the amount considered adequate to start grazing. The first cutting, at this time, in association with the use of nitrogen also influenced the pasture regrowth capacity, which was indicated by the dry mass accumulation of 2398 kg of DM ha-1 obtained 30 days after this cutting. Nitrogen fertilization increased the number of oat leaves , which contributed to the high level of crude protein content (27%), showing the high quality of the material.

Conduziu-se um experimento, em casa de vegetação, com o objetivo de avaliar a influência de fungos MVA nativos de solo ácido, na absorção de fósforo de fonte de baixa solubilidade. Dez plantas/vaso de trevo vesiculoso (Trifolium vesiculosum Savi) foram cultivadas até início do florescimento, utilizando-se amostra superficial de um solo Podzólico Vermelho-Escuro (Palehumult), num esquema fatorial 2x4+1, com pH 4,2 e 5,1; zero, 35 ppm de P2O5 (SFT), 70ppm de P2O5 FBS (fração insolúvel em ácido cítrico a 2% de fosfato de Araxá parcialmente acidulado) e 70ppm de P2O5 deste último fosfato aplicado em cultivo anterior de comichão. Estes tratamentos foram inoculados com esporos de fMVA nativos. Usou-se também um tratamento com solo fumigado, com pH 4,2 e sem fósforo. O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente ao acaso com cinco repetições. Os tratamentos com pH 4,2 apresentaram sintomas de toxidez de manganês. A fumigação agravou estes sintomas, impedindo o estabelecimento das plântulas de trevo vesiculoso. Não houve diferenças significativas na produção de matéria seca, absorção de fósforo e taxa de colonização micorrízica, quando se adicionou FBS, quando comparados a FBS ou SFT, mas tiveram, estes parâmetros, valores superiores aos verificados para o tratamento sem adição de fósforo. Em pH 5,1 a colonização micorrízica atingiu níveis superiores a 80%, porém sem influência do fósforo. A produção de matéria seca e fósforo absorvido no tratamento sem adição de P foram semelhantes a FBS residual. A aplicação de 70ppm de FBS em efeito imediato, embora tenha duplicado o fósforo acumulado, foi inferior ao obtido com 35ppm de SFT, evidenciando que a FBS contém uma porção de fósforo solúvel e que os fMVA nativos podem contribuir para a nutrição fosfatada do trevo vesiculoso. Yuchi) were used, till flowering initiation, in each pot filled with surface soil from a Dark Red Podzolic (Palehumult), in a 2x4+1 factorial arrangement, at pH 4.2 and 5.1, with zero, 35ppm of concentrated superphosphate, 70ppm of P2O5 from a low solubility source - LLS - (fraction insoluble in citric acid at 2% of partially acidulated Araxá phosphate), and 70ppm of P2O5 from the LLS applied to a precedent crop, residual effect. These treatments were inoculated with VAM fungi spores. A fumigated, pH 4.2 and without phosphorus addition treatment was used as control. The experimental arrangement was a complete randomized plot design with five replications, and 9 treatments. The pH 4.2 treatment showed manganese toxicity symptons, not allowing the establishment of the trifolium seedlings. There were no differences in dry matter yield, phosphorus uptake and mycorrhizal colonization rate when the low solubility source was used, as compared to its residual effect or to the concetrated superphosphate, but those parameters were higher than the treatment without phosphorus. For pH 5.1, the mycorrhizal colonization rate reached values higher than 80%, but without phosphorus effects. Dry matter yield and phosphorus uptake for the zero phosphorus phosphorus source. The 70ppm treatment of this source doubled the accumulated phosphorus, but was lower than that of the 35ppm concentrated superphosphate, showing that the low solubility source has a fraction of soluble phosphorus and that the indigenous VAM fungi can contribute to the phosphorus nutrition of trifolium.

Objetivou-se avaliar o efeito de duas intensidades de pastejo sobre a produção animal em pastagem natural sobressemeada com espécies leguminosas exóticas (trevo branco, Trifolium repens; trevo vermelho, Trifolium pratense; e cornichão, Lotus corniculatus) sob pastejo contínuo com taxa de lotação variável. Os tratamentos consistiram de duas massas de forragem: baixa massa de forragem (MB) (1.021 kg de MS/ha) e alta massa de forragem (MA) (1.751 kg de MS/ha). As avaliações da pastagem e dos animais foram realizadas em intervalos de aproximadamente 30 dias. Houve forte interação tratamento ´ período experimental para a variável carga animal, que apresentou médias de 690 e 437 kg de MS/ha para MB e MA, respectivamente. O tratamento de MA (480 g/animal/dia) resultou em ganho de peso médio diário superior ao MB (282 g/animal/dia). Não houve diferença significativa entre os tratamentos para produção animal total por área, observando-se valores de 231 e 207 kg/ha para MA e MB, respectivamente. Este resultados indicam que o manejo das pastagens nativas deve ser conduzido com valores de massa de forragem próximos a 1.700 kg MS/ha, pois mantêm satisfatória taxa de ganho dos animais. A grazing trial was carried out to evaluate the effect of two forage masses on the animal yield from natural pasture over-sown with exotic legumes species (white clover - Trifolium repens, red clover - Trifolium pratense and birdsfoottrifoil - Lotus corniculatus). The grazing method consisted of a variable continuous stocking rate over the period from July 2003 to April 2004. The experimental treatments were two forage masses: low forage mass (LFM) (1,021 kg of DM/ha) and high forage mass (HFM) (1,751 kg of DM/ha). Pasture and animal evaluations were accomplished nearly at 30 days intervals. Heavy treatment ´ experimental period interaction was observed for the stocking rate that showed an average of 690 and 437 kg of DM/ha to LFM and HFM respectively. Forage mass affected the animal average daily gain estimates of 480 and 262 g/animal/day for HFM and LFM, respectively, but had no effect on animal body weight yield per unit of land area estimates of 231 and 207 kg/ha for the LFM and HFM, respectively. These results point out that the improved natural pasture management must be accomplished under herbage mass valus near to 1,700 DM/ha, because it maintain good weight gain rate.

RESUMO Com o objetivo de avaliar o efeito da calagem, e da adubação com fósforo e com zinco no rendimento da pensacola (Paspaium notatum Flugge var. saurae P.) em solo franco arenoso, conduziu-se uni experimento em casa de vegetação na UFSM, utilizando-se delineamento inteiramente casualizado com quatro repetições. Os tratamentos foram a combinação de três doses de zinco (zero, 4 e 20ppm de Zn) e três doses de fósforo (zero, 30 e 150ppm de P2O5) com e sem acidez corrigida com calcário. Os resultados foram avaliados pelo rendimento de matéria seca, fósforo e zinco absorvidos pela planta. Observou-se interação entre calagem e fósforo e entre zinco e fósforo. O aumento de pH do solo pela calagem de 4,8 para 6,5, diminuiu o rendimento de matéria seca e o fósforo absorvido nas doses zero e 30ppm de P2O5, mas não diferiu na dose de 150ppm. No tratamento com dose zero de fósforo, onde foi corrigida a acidez (pH 6,5), a cultura não se estabeleceu e na dose de 30ppm foi inferior ao do pH 4,8. A aplicação de zinco teve efeito negativo no rendimento de matéria seca e absorção de fósforo nas doses zero e 30ppm de fósforo, mas este efeito depressivo foi anulado com a aplicação de fósforo na dose de 150ppm e/ou aplicação de calcário para pH 6,5. O nível crítico de zinco na planta parece situar-se entre 12 e 20ppm. SUMMARY This work aimed to evaluate the lime, phosphorus and zinc effect on bahia grass (Paspalurn notatum Flugge var. saurae) dry matter. A greenhouse experiment was carried out using 2.5L pots with 3kg of sandy loam soil sample (Red yellow Podzolic - Paleudalf), in a factorial experimental design (3 x 3 x 2): two rates of lime (to reach pH 4.5 and 6.5), three zinc rates (0; 4 and 20ppm) and three phosphate rates (0; 30 and 150ppm P2O5). The dry matter production decreased when pH was raised to 6.5 for zero and 30ppm P2O5 rates. For zero ppm P2O5 ali seediings died and for 150 there were no differences in dry matter as compared to pH 4.5. The bahia grass dry matter production and phosphorus uptake for pH 4.5 treatament aiso decreased with zinc use when the rates of P2O5 was zero and 30ppm. This depressivo effect was anulated by the use of lime to reach soil pH 6.5 or 150ppm of P2O5 The zinc critical level for bahia grass was between 12 and 20ppm.

Pouco se sabe sobre os benefícios do cultivo de adubos verdes sobre o desempenho da cultura do trigo, cultivada em sucessão e, até que ponto, pode substituir ou reduzir a adubação nitrogenada mineral. Objetivou-se com o presente trabalho avaliar a produção e decomposição de matéria seca bem como o acúmulo e liberação de nutrientes de plantas de cobertura de solo (nabo forrageiro, ervilhaca comum, ervilha forrageira, tremoço e feijoeiro) e quantificar seus efeitos sobre o desempenho da cultura do trigo, cultivada em sucessão, sob diferentes doses de adubação nitrogenada (sem adição de nitrogênio, 40, 80 e 120 kg ha-1). O experimento foi desenvolvido no município de Pato Branco (PR), em duas safras agrícolas, em sistema de plantio direto. O nabo forrageiro e o tremoço acumularam as maiores quantidades de cálcio e potássio. A ervilha forrageira e o nabo forrageiro destacam-se pela produção de matéria seca, acúmulo de nitrogênio, fósforo, potássio, bem como pela decomposição e liberação de nitrogênio para a cultura do trigo em estádios fenológicos de maior demanda deste nutriente. A relação C/N (superior a 40) dos restos culturais do milho e feijoeiro não possibilitou equilíbrio entre os processos de mineralização e imobilização. Os adubos verdes promoveram acréscimos significativos na produtividade de grãos em comparação ao pousio. Houve resposta do trigo à aplicação de nitrogênio mineral, e esta foi dependente da planta de cobertura antecessora. There are few studies about the benefits of green manure on wheat performance grown in succession as source of nitrogen. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the dry matter production and nutrient accumulation in wheat and the dry matter decomposition and nutrient release of cover crops forage turnip, common vetch, forage pea, lupine and bean and quantify their effects over wheat crop performance sown in succession under different nitrogen rates (without N addition, 40, 80 and 120 kg ha-1). The experiment was carried out in Pato Branco (PR, Brazil) during two crop seasons in no-tillage system. Oilseed radish and lupine accumulated the largest amounts of calcium and potassium. Forage pea and oilseed radish stand out with the highest dry matter production, nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium accumulation. Forage pea and oilseed radish also decomposed faster and released nitrogen to wheat at growth stages with high demand for this nutrient. The C/N ratio (above at 40) as evidenced by the maize straw and bean residue did not allow the adequate balance between mineralization and immobilization process. Cover crops promoted significant increases in wheat grain yield compared to fallow. There was a wheat response to mineral nitrogen rates, and this was dependent on the green manures cultivated before wheat.
