Abstract The COVID-19 pandemic triggered a surge in demand for N95 or equivalent respirators that the global supply chain was unable to satisfy. This shortage in critical equipment has inspired research that addresses the immediate problems and has accelerated the development of the next-generation filtration media and respirators. This article provides a brief review of the most recent work with regard to face respirators and filtration media. We discuss filtration efficiency of the widely utilized cloth masks. Next, the sterilization of and reuse of existing N95 respirators to extend the existing stockpile is discussed. To expand near-term supplies, optimization of current manufacturing methods, such as melt-blown processes and electrospinning, has been explored. Future manufacturing methods have been investigated to address long-term supply shortages. Novel materials with antiviral and sterilizable properties with the ability for multiple reuses have been developed and will contribute to the development of the next generation of longer lasting multi-use N95 respirators. Finally, additively manufactured respirators are reviewed, which enable a rapidly deployable source of reusable respirators that can use any filtration fabric. Graphic abstract

Cast iron and steel weldments are the most common machine tool base elements. However, both construction methods have associated disadvantages for domestic machine tool manufacturers. This paper documents the investigation of an alternative method for machine tool base production using concrete to fill an additively manufactured polymer mold, where the motion components are attached to the concrete base after the initial concrete curing. Modal testing results for a three-axis, vertical spindle prototype indicate high damping and stiffness can be achieved using the concrete base construction. Advantages are reduced cost and lead time compared to traditional methods.

Defects can result in a failed part and are costly in terms of time and material. This cost is even greater in the context of large-scale additive manufacturing where the objects can be very large. As a result, a great deal of research has focused on defect identification and mitigation. To address defects during object construction, researchers at Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s Manufacturing Demonstration Facility investigated an in-situ control system comprised of two sensors: a thermal camera and laser profilometer. This control system adjusted material flow and build speed to mitigate three types of defects: low layer times, underfill, and overfill. Several test objects were constructed. The control system was found to adjust build parameters to handle low layer times of approximately 15 seconds and height deviations from -100% underfill (the absence of a layer) to 50% overfill. Within two layers, height deviations could be returned to within 10% of the expected layer height. Further, preliminary results suggest the system can compensate for uneven build surfaces.

Oak Ridge National Lab’s (ORNL) Metal Big Area Additive Manufacturing (mBAAM) and Hybrid Manufacturing teams in the Manufacturing Demonstration Facility (MDF) was tasked with developing a part that exceeded 24 inches in length and 100lbs in weight on a laser hotwire welding system. The Mazak VC-500A/5X AM HWD hybrid 5-axis CNC laser hotwire system was leveraged to complete the task. The proposed geometry was manufactured with 410 stainless steel on AISI1018 steel substrate in just over 36 hours of build time. The proposed geometry was sliced and additively manufactured in three segments; the base, and two extrusions measuring 10 inches in length and 14 inches in length. Production of this component demonstrated hybrid capabilities requiring fixed 5-axis rotations to complete geometry that exceeded the defined build volume of the machine. Multiple repairs of the part were conducted in-situ leveraging the additive and subtractive capabilities of the Mazak hybrid system. Significant overbuilding challenges were encountered and manually addressed by leveraging subtractive capabilities of the hybrid system. Future processes are presented for development to reduce overheating of top layers. Final part measurements exceeded 107 lbs. in weight and 24.5 inches in length along the principal axis; the largest and heaviest part created by a hybrid system at the MDF.

Photovoltaic (PV)-generated electricity can participate in renewable grid parity after meeting conditions of low-cost PV materials and economic manufacturing of solar cells. Here, we report low-cost, scalable microbial synthesis of Cu(In,Ga)Se₂ (CIGSe) and Cu(In,Ga)S₂ (CIGS), which are among the promising candidates to serve as light absorbing layers in solar panels. Microbial synthesis uses reducible chalcophiles and empirically stoichiometric metal components to produce CIGSe and CIGS with band gaps and intra- and intercrystallite compositional homogeneity similar to that produced with traditional techniques. Importantly, microbially produced photovoltaic materials described herein use inexpensive precursor materials at moderate temperatures (65 °C). The microbially facilitated processes do not utilize high temperature, vacuum, or toxic organic solvents. The potential to upscale microbial synthesis without loss of material quality is demonstrated here, indicating a high potential for industrial applications of this technology for production of nanomaterials for PV applications. We estimate that a 50 000 gallon fermentor could generate about 100 kg/month of CIGSe nanoparticles, which could be processed into 0.2 MW of PV cells.

Additive manufacturing (AM) has the potential to reduce costs in the casting industry, particularly for large parts (i.e., components with any dimension > 12 in.). Here, pilot-scale production case studies of hydroelectric and automotive parts were used to evaluate two AM-enabled casting methods: the direct printing of sand molds by binder jet and printing of reusable cope and drag patterns for sand casting. An additional benefit was found when additively manufactured patterns were used in combination with heat-treat free aluminum alloys, to produce castings of complex hydrodynamic surfaces. These parts previously required production via subtractive machining due to part distortion induced by the quench step of heat treatments. The machine types used for the three case studies are sand-binder jet, high-resolution polymer fused deposition modeling (FDM), and big area additive manufacturing (BAAM) FDM in combination with CNC machining. Each method demonstrated distinct advantages over traditional casting practices in particular use cases. Single-use molds show great reductions in start-up cost to produce one-off or legacy parts, and additively manufactured impression patterns show promise for innovating the tooling design process for complex geometry and large castings.

Big Area Additive Manufacturing (BAAM) is a large format additive manufacturing (AM) process. The size scale has enabled many new applications for AM. However, at this scale, lack of high print resolution and extruder flowrate control lead to potentially significant geometric deviations in the printed part. This paper examines strategies to improve geometric quality in BAAM parts. Multi-resolution printing, extrusion diversion, and feedforward extruder control are examined herein. These methods were all found to be effective in mitigating phenomena detrimental to geometric part quality on the BAAM process.

Wire feed metal additive manufacturing offers advantages, such as large build volumes and high build rates, over powder bed and blown powder techniques, but it has its own disadvantages, i.e., lower feature resolution and bead morphology control issues. A new wire feed metal additive manufacturing process called Metal Big Area Additive Manufacturing (mBAAM) uses a Gas Metal Arc Weld system on an articulated robot arm to increase build volume and deposition rate in comparison to powder bed techniques. The high deposition rate implies a low-resolution process; therefore, parts designed for mBAAM must incorporate the use of machining to achieve certain features. This paper presents an introduction to how design rules, such as overhang constraint, large weld bead thickness, and support structure, for mBAAM interact in the context of an excavator arm case study, which was designed using topology optimization.

Ideally, objects are constructed as quickly as possible; however, short build times for a layer can present an issue. Short layer build times do not provide enough time for the material to cool sufficiently. As a result, an object cannot support its own weight nor deal with overhanging features. Additionally, the generation of support structures may be impractical either due to geometry or, in the case of large-scale polymer additive manufacturing, due to being difficult to remove. To address these issues, researchers at Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s Manufacturing Demonstration Facility investigated the use of a thermal camera mounted to a gantry to collect data on an object under construction. This data provided feedback for an in-situ control system to adjust layer build times. Adjustments were made in the form of additional waiting to allow the material to cool to specific thermal thresholds. This additional cooling time allowed the construction of objects with low layer build times or overhanging features that would have otherwise failed.

Additive manufacturing (AM), more commonly referred to as 3D printing, is revolutionizing the manufacturing industry. With any new technology comes new rules and guidelines for the optimal use of said technology. Big Area Additive Manufacturing (BAAM), developed by Cincinnati Incorporated and Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s Manufacturing Demonstration Facility, requires a host of new design parameters compared to small-scale 3D printing to create large-scale parts. However, BAAM also creates new possibilities in material testing and various applications in the manufacturing industry. Most of the design constraints of small-scale polymer 3D printers still apply to BAAM. Beyond those constraints, new rules and limitations exist because BAAM’s large-scale system significantly changes the thermal properties associated with small-scale AM. This work details both physical and software-related design considerations for additive manufacturing. After reading this guide, one will have a better understanding of slicing software’s capabilities and limitations, different physical characteristics of design and how to apply them appropriately for AM, and how to take the inherent nature of AM into consideration during the design process.

The production of wet laid (WL) reinforcing fiber mats is adopted from the paper making industry to produce carbon fiber (CF) mats. The resulting mats are prone to defects induced by the mixing regime. This study explores a new mixer design that achieved fully dispersed mats with 20 minutes processing time using 25.4 mm long CF. The proposed mixing method is compared against the traditional method and the density distribution of fibers is characterized using Back Light Scattering (BLS) technique. The mats showed high consistency with less than 8% standard deviation from the data collected from different regions within the mats. The innovative mixer resulted in mats with fiber distribution 70% closer to the theoretical distribution than that of the traditional mixer. This innovative method of preparing nonwoven CF mats will create new opportunities for CF nonwoven composite applications.

Additive manufacturing (AM), commonly referred to as 3D printing, was originally used for rapid prototyping. However, research into new technologies has allowed AM to become applicable far beyond prototype fabrication. Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), sponsored by the Office of Naval Research, has designed and developed an anthropomorphic seven degree-of-freedom (DOF) dual arm hydraulic manipulator using metal AM technologies. The titanium manipulators are designed for subsea use. All electrical and fluidic passageways are printed into each arm. The novel, cam-based design uses low-flow, energy-efficient valves. The hydraulic power unit is built into the base of the hydraulic arms’ mount. This article will detail the novel AM design of the hydraulic manipulator system. It will cover the manipulators’ pitch and rotary link designs, custom valves, hydraulic power unit, and the motivation for a dual arm design. This article will also describe lessons learned throughout the project and draw conclusions for future applications.

This article highlights work at Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s Manufacturing Demonstration Facility to develop closed-loop, feedback control for laser-wire based Directed Energy Deposition, a form of metal Big Area Additive Manufacturing (m-BAAM), a process being developed in partnership with GKN Aerospace specifically for the production of Ti-6Al-4V pre-forms for aerospace components. A large-scale structural demonstrator component is presented as a case-study in which not just control, but the entire 3D printing workflow for m-BAAM is discussed in detail, including design principles for large-format metal AM, toolpath generation, parameter development, process control, and system operation, as well as post-print net-shape geometric analysis and finish machining. In terms of control, a multi-sensor approach has been utilized to measure both layer height and melt pool size, and multiple modes of closed-loop control have been developed to manipulate process parameters (laser power, print speed, deposition rate) to control these variables. Layer height control and melt pool size control have yielded excellent local (intralayer) and global (component-level) geometry control, and the impact of melt pool size control in particular on thermal gradients and material properties is the subject of continuing research. Further, these modes of control have allowed the process to advance to higher deposition rates (exceeding 7.5 lb/hr), larger parts (1-meter scale), shorter build times, and higher overall efficiency. The control modes are examined individually, highlighting their development, demonstration, and lessons learned, and it is shown how they operate concurrently to enable the printing of a large-scale, near net shape Ti-6Al-4V component.

Defect identification and mitigation is an important avenue of research to improve the overall quality of objects created using additive manufacturing (AM) technologies. Identifying and mitigating defects takes on additional importance in large-scale, industrial AM. In large-scale AM, defects that result in failed prints are extremely costly in terms of time spent and material used. To address these issues, researchers at Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s Manufacturing Demonstration Facility investigated the use of a laser profilometer and thermal camera to collect data concerning an object as it was constructed. These data provided feedback for an in situ control system to adjust object construction. Adjustments were made in the form of automated height control. This paper presents results for both a polymer- and metal-based system. Object construction for both systems was improved significantly, and the resulting objects were more geometrically identical to the ideal 3D representation.

Printing high-performance thermoplastics on large scale extrusion-based additive manufacturing platforms requires stability over a range of processing conditions. However, studies on the melt dynamics and processing conditions of these thermoplastics in big area additive manufacturing (BAAM) are limited. This study characterizes the dynamic rheological behavior of polyetherimide (PEI), a high-performance thermoplastic, as well as carbon fiber (CF)-reinforced PEI composites as a BAAM feedstock material. The viscoelastic properties, such as the storage and loss moduli and complex viscosity, are investigated in relation to the BAAM extrusion process. The results show that CF-PEI composites behave like a viscous liquid during BAAM extrusion. The addition of CF to PEI enhances the shear thinning effect and significantly increases the complex viscosity (2.5× increase for 20% CF, and 3× for 30% CF). The increased viscosity increases the torque on the extruder, which may be alleviated by increasing the material processing temperature.

As the application space for large-scale 3D printed components continues to grow, it is necessary to identify appropriate processing conditions for high-performance thermoplastics on large format Additive Manufacturing (LFAM) systems. This study compares the rheological behavior of a high-performance thermoplastic, polyphenylsulfone (PPSU), with that of a commonly used low-temperature polymer, acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), to identify suitable processing conditions for large format AM systems. The linear viscoelastic properties (complex viscosity, storage modulus, loss modulus, and tan delta) of these materials are evaluated as a function of temperature, angular frequency, and carbon fiber content. Over the range of frequencies of interest to LFAM (10–100 rad/s), ABS behaves more like an elastic solid whereas PPSU behaves more like a viscous liquid. The addition of 20–35% by weight of carbon fiber increased the shear thinning effect of both thermoplastics, showing a potential variation of 2–3 x over the range of expected LFAM extrusion shear rates (10–100 s−1).

Low alloy carbon manganese (C-Mn) steel builds were fabricated using a wire based additive manufacturing system developed at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Specimens were fabricated in the X,Y and Z direction and detailed mechanical testing was performed. The mechanical testing results showed a significant scatter in tensile ductility and significant variation in Charpy toughness. Further detailed microstructure characterization showed significant microstructural heterogeneity in builds fabricated in each direction. The scatter in mechanical properties was then rationalized based on the microstructural observations and the underlying changes in the local heat transfer conditions. The results indicate that when fabricating parts using C-Mn low alloy steel welds the process parameters and tool path should be chosen such that the cooling rate from 800 °C to 500 °C is greater than 30 s to avoid formation of martensite austenite (MA) phases, which leads to toughness reductions.

As additive manufacturing (AM) continues to develop and become a standardized manufacturing method, there will be a continued need to provide in-situ monitoring during the manufacturing of polymer composite printed components. Thermal residual stress is a primary cause of failures such as interlayer disbonds or delamination, micro cracking, and dimensional instability, which can occur during or after the build. This study reports a novel digital image correlation (DIC) adaptation to monitor thermal residual stresses during the entire print process for large-scale AM. In this work, DIC has been investigated (a) by the natural speckle produced by the polymer surface for correlation, (b) to monitor AM build, and (c) to evaluate the effect of thermal residual stress on warpage of the printed component. The natural speckle pattern of the AM material resulted in a respectable 3.57% error compared to the traditional painted speckle pattern of 3.05% error. DIC measured a 190% increase in vertical displacement at the edge of the wall compared to the center, indicating warpage during AM. This work is a step towards a non-intrusive residual stress measuring technique using DIC for large-scale AM.

At the onset of the COVID-19 (Coronavirus Disease 2019) pandemic, USA faced supply chain issues causing a nationwide shortage of N95 respirators and PAPR devices. Researchers at Oak Ridge National Laboratory's (ORNL) Manufacturing Demonstration Facility (MDF) were sent to work from home to help slow the spread of the pandemic, and during that time they were tasked with using their manufacturing expertise to research alternative methods of producing face masks. To rapidly iterate on face mask designs without access to a research or manufacturing facility, 3D (3-Dimensional) printing and silicone casting were used. Molds and components for the masks are modeled with computer-aided design (CAD), printed with common home desktop 3D printers, and test poured with skin-safe silicone rubber. The resultant masks are form fitting and comfortable to wear. To ease the shortage of N95 filter media, the masks are designed to use existing filter materials such as home HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) filters. The masks can be sanitized, and the filter replaced to allow the same mask to be reused. The result is not equivalent to an N95 mask, and not meant to be a replacement, but is meant to be a stopgap mask that is still able to provide the wearer filtered protection. Filtration testing has not been performed because it is not the intention of the authors to make medical claims. This research is meant to demonstrate the rapid design, iteration, and manufacturing processes of a stopgap mask.

The incremental deposition process utilized by most additive manufacturing (AM) technologies presents significant challenges related to residual stresses and warping which arise from repeated deposition of hot material onto cooler material. These issues are magnified at larger scale, where even a small thermal strain can correspond to several millimeters of deformation. In this work we investigate the thermal evolution in thin walls of carbon fiber/acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (CF/ABS) composite materials fabricated via Big Area Additive Manufacturing (BAAM). We measure the thermal evolution of composite parts during the build process using infrared imaging, and develop a simple 1D transient thermal model to describe the build process. The model predictions are in excellent agreement with the observed temperature profiles and from the results we develop criteria to guide deposition parameter selection to minimize the likelihood of cracking during printing.

Rapid vehicle and powertrain development has become essential to for the design and implementation of vehicles that meet and exceed the fuel efficiency, cost, and performance targets expected by today’s consumer while keeping pace with reduced development cycle and more frequent product releases. Recently, advances in large-scale additive manufacturing have provided the means to bridge hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) experimentation and preproduction mule chassis evaluation. This paper details the accelerated development of a printed range-extended electric vehicle (REEV) by Oak Ridge National Laboratory, by paralleling hardware-in-the-loop development of the powertrain with rapid chassis prototyping using big area additive manufacturing (BAAM). BAAM’s ability to accelerate the mule vehicle development from computer-aided design to vehicle build is explored. The use of a hardware-in-the-loop laboratory is described as it is applied to the design of a range-extended electric powertrain to be installed in a printed prototype vehicle. The integration of the powertrain and the opportunities and challenges it presents are described in this work. A comparison of offline simulation, HIL and chassis rolls results is presented to validate the development process. Chassis dynamometer results for battery electric and range extender operation are analyzed to show the benefits of the architecture.

Purpose This paper aims to investigate the deposited structure and mechanical performance of printed materials obtained during initial development of the Big Area Additive Manufacturing (BAAM) system at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Issues unique to large-scale polymer deposition are identified and presented to reduce the learning curve for the development of similar systems. Design/methodology/approach Although the BAAM’s individual extruded bead is 10-20× larger (∼9 mm) than the typical small-scale systems, the overall characteristics of the deposited material are very similar. This study relates the structure of BAAM materials to the material composition, deposition parameters and resulting mechanical performance. Findings Materials investigated during initial trials are suitable for stiffness-limited applications. The strength of printed materials can be significantly reduced by voids and imperfect fusion between layers. Deposited material was found to have voids between adjacent beads and micro-porosity within a given bead. Failure generally occurs at interfaces between adjacent beads and successive layers, indicating imperfect contact area and polymer fusion. Practical implications The incorporation of second-phase reinforcement in printed materials can significantly improve stiffness but can result in notable anisotropy that needs to be accounted for in the design of BAAM-printed structures. Originality/value This initial evaluation of BAAM-deposited structures and mechanical performance will guide the current research effort for improving interlaminar strength and process control.

In this research, closed-loop melt pool size control for large-scale, laser wire-based directed energy deposition is demonstrated with a novel modification, i.e., site-specific changes to the controller setpoint were commanded at trigger points, the locations of which were generated by the projection of a secondary geometry onto the primary three-dimensional (3D) printed component geometry. The present work shows that, through this technique, it is possible to print a specific geometry that occurs beyond the actual toolpath of the print head. This is denoted as extra-toolpath geometry and is fundamentally different from other methods of generating component features in metal AM. A proof-of-principle experiment is presented in which a complex oak leaf geometry was embossed on an otherwise ordinary double-bead wall made from Ti-6Al-4V. The process is introduced and characterized primarily from a controls perspective with reports on the performance of the control system, the melt pool size response, and the resulting geometry. The implications of this capability, which extend beyond localized control of bead geometry to the potential mitigations of defects and functional grading of component properties, are discussed.

This paper describes how a relatively new manufacturing technology known as additive manufacturing (AM) can enable creation of more mass efficient components when compared to those created by conventional or subtractive manufacturing (SM). An important element in the use of AM is re-thinking the design approach when completely new shape possibilities are enabled. Similarly, creative use of AM also can enable significant part count reduction. In order to make the case for the potential of AM, the more common AM processes are described and illustrated. As with any new technology, there come challenges during the reduction to practice phase of AM. Some of these challenges have been addressed and solved. Others are a work in progress and the approach to possible solutions to some of these is described.

Hybrid manufacturing is a combination of additive (deposition) and subtractive (machining) manufacturing in a single machine tool. Such a system can be used for near net shape manufacturing and component repair using either similar or dissimilar materials. Integrated into a single system, transition between additive and subtractive manufacturing can occur immediately and be leveraged to generate large components by alternating between the processes. This investigation shows how the interleaved capabilities can reduce overall cycle time by up to 68 %, improve average relative elongation to failure by 71 %, and reduce the average relative porosity fraction by 83 % when compared to traditional additive manufactured components. Results from this investigation builds the foundation needed for hybrid manufacturing to be applicable towards the manufacture of large complex components such as nosecones and marine propulsors.

Richard Feynman’s famous words, “there’s plenty of room at the bottom,” referred to the opportunities for revolutionizing the electronics industry by developing the science and technology of how to manufacture very small components (sub-micron to nanometer sized features) (Feynman, 1959) [ 1 ]. In additive manufacturing (AM), the opposite may be true: There’s plenty of room at the top. AM’s strength is in the low volume production of complex components, which is demanded in big industries such as oil and gas, construction, tooling, wind and water turbines, and infrastructure. Is AM’s ‘big’ future in the manufacture of large structures? This special issue surveys the technical challenges and enormous opportunities associated with large scale additive manufacturing while discussing the materials, processes and applications that are enabled by scaling to much larger structures, much faster speeds and lower manufacturing costs. The authors believe that, if Professor Feynman was alive, he’d say “There’s plenty of room at the top.”

The International Friendship Bell Pavilion located in the City of Oak Ridge, Tennessee symbolizes the spirit of the peace and friendship shared by the city of Oak Ridge and city of Naka, Japan. The Bell Pavilion features an 8000-pound bronze cast bell along with futuristic materials and advanced manufacturing technologies. The team has developed innovative overbraided carbon fiber arched beams in conjunction with the bronze bell. Carbon fiber was utilized in these beams because of its lightweight, strong, stiff, and durable characteristics. A sandwich design used a high-performance foam core, overbraided with triaxial carbon fibers. This is the world’s largest overbraided composite structure for parks and recreation. For the first time in such an application, 17 free floating, 33-foot (10 m) long arched carbon fiber composite beams cantilever from a central concrete-steel superstructure over the bronze bell. The arc radius of the bottom of each beam is uniquely different giving an appearance of an open dome when standing underneath the structure.

A 3D printed, structured packed-bed device has been developed to facilitate mass and heat transfer in multiphase-flow systems. This multifunctional device is compatible with commercially available packing elements used to effectively contact gas–liquid or liquid–liquid systems, and can be positioned along a packed bed to remove excess heat or supply thermal energy to a reactive system. The device is investigated for process intensification of CO2 absorption by aqueous amines. The design, manufacturing, and functional characterization of the device are reported here. Its hydrodynamic properties are measured and compared to a polymer print of the same design. Pressure drop measurements are obtained for a dry system at various gas flow rates and also for an irrigated system at six liquid flow rates. The heat transfer properties of the process intensification device were explored by studying the behavior of the temperature profile inside the column for a gas only system before and after cooling. The behavior of the temperature profile was subsequently studied for an irrigated system. In order to better understand the physical behavior of the system, we developed a rigorous heat-transfer model using MFIX, a multiphase computational fluid dynamics software, and compared modeling results to experimental data. The overall heat transfer coefficient under various flow conditions was determined to be between 32 and 35 W/°C-m2.

Direct Energy Deposition (DED) systems are currently used to repair and maintain existing parts in the aerospace and automotive industries. This paper discusses an effort to scale up the DED technique in order to Additively Manufacture (AM) molds and dies used in the composite manufacturing industry. The US molds and dies market has been in a rapid decline over the last decade due to outsourcing to non-US entities. Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), Wolf Robotics and Lincoln Electric have developed a Metal Big Area Additive Manufacturing (MBAAM) system that uses a high deposition rate and a low-cost wire feedstock material. In this work we used the MBAAM system with a mild steel wire, ER70S-6, to fabricate a compression molding mold for composite structures used in automotive and mass-transit applications. In addition, the mechanical properties of the AM structure were investigated, and it was found that the MBAAM process delivers parts with high planar isotropic behavior. The paper investigates the microstructure and grain of the printed articles to confirm the roots of the observed planar isotropic properties. The manufactured AM mold was used to fabricate 50 composite parts with no observed mold deformations.
