1. Exploring Venus: next generation missions beyond those currently planned

Abstract

As of mid-2023 at least ten missions are in development or being planned to explore Venus in the next 2 decades. Most of these emphasize atmospheric chemistry and surface/interior scientific objectives and only a few directly address past and present habitability of Venus as a primary science goal. All of the missions employ previously flight-tested platforms—Orbiters and general atmospheric probes, yet none (as of yet) plan to utilize longer-lived atmospheric platforms (e.g., balloons or airships) or landers. Thus several key questions about Venus will necessarily remain unanswered after the current wave of missions in development which will explore Venus starting in 2029 and continuing throughout the 2030s. This future-oriented perspective outlines the major scientific questions that the next-generation of missions to Venus should address for a better understanding of the planet as a system and provide a reliable comparative basis for the Venus-analogue exoplanets which can be investigated only by means of remote observations such as from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). This next generation of Venus missions may require long lived atmospheric platforms that either float or which “fly” at different altitudes, longer lived surface stations, and eventually samples of the atmosphere/cloud particles (aerosols) and surface returned to Earth laboratories. Although ideas for aerial platforms, long-lived landers, and missions to return atmospheric and surface samples are being conceptualized at present to be ready for upcoming international competed opportunities (e.g., NASA, ESA, ISRO, JAXA), they await further investment in technologies to provide the combination of scientific measurement capabilities and flight-system performance to make the breakthroughs that the community will expect, guided by longstanding science priorities.

Abstract

We present a significantly updated CO$_2$ altitude profile for Venus (64.2-0.9 km) and provide support for a potential deep lower atmospheric haze of particles (17 km and lower). We extracted this information by developing a new analytical model for mass spectra obtained by the Pioneer Venus Large Probe (PVLP) Neutral Mass Spectrometer (LNMS). Our model accounts for changes in LNMS configuration and output during descent and enables the disentanglement of isobaric species via a data fitting routine that adjusts for mass-dependent changes in peak shape. The model yields CO$_2$ in units of density (kg m-3), isotope ratios for $^{13}$C/$^{12}$C and $^{18}$O/$^{16}$O, and 14 measures of CO$_2$ density across 55.4-0.9 km, which represents the most complete altitude profile for CO$_2$ at 60 km towards the surface to date. The CO$_2$ density profile is also consistent with the pressure, temperature, and volumetric gas measurements from the PVLP and VeNeRa spacecraft. Nominal and low-noise operations for the LNMS mass analyzer are supported by the behaviors (e.g., ionization yields, fragmentation yields, and peak shapes) of several internal standards (e.g., CH$^{3+}$, CH$^{4+}$, $^{40}$Ar$^+$, $^{136}$Xe$^{2+}$, and $^{136}$Xe$^+$), which were tracked across the descent. Lastly, our review of the CO$_2$ profile and LNMS spectra reveals hitherto unreported partial and rapidly clearing clogs of the inlet in the lower atmosphere, along with several ensuing data spikes at multiple masses. Together, these observations suggest that atmospheric intake was impacted by particles at 17 km (and lower) and that rapid particle degradation at the inlet yielded a temporary influx of mass signals into the LNMS., Accepted, Nov. 2022

3. How waves and turbulence maintain the super-rotation of Venus' atmosphere

Abstract

Venus has a thick atmosphere that rotates 60 times as fast as the surface, a phenomenon known as superrotation. We use data obtained from the orbiting Akatsuki spacecraft to investigate how the super-rotation is maintained in the cloud layer, where the rotation speed is highest. A thermally induced latitudinal-vertical circulation acts to homogenize the distribution of the angular momentum around the rotational axis. Maintaining the super-rotation requires this to be counteracted by atmospheric waves and turbulence. Among those effects, thermal tides transport the angular momentum, which maintains the rotation peak, near the cloud top at low latitudes. Other planetary-scale waves and large-scale turbulence act in the opposite direction. We suggest that hydrodynamic instabilities adjust the angular-momentum distribution at mid-latitudes.

Abstract

It is known that the ideal gas equation of state is not valid in the lower atmosphere of Venus where surface pressures reach 9 MPa and surface temperatures approach 750K. Moreover, the presence of a small amount of nitrogen slightly complicates the calculation of thermodynamic properties of the real gas mixture present in the atmosphere. Previous calculations of the adiabatic lapse rate in the Venus atmosphere have used approximations to estimate the adiabatic lapse rate. Here, we calculate the adiabatic lapse rate more accurately by using multi-parameter mixture models formulated in reduced Helmholtz free energy to account for the real gas mixture effects. Our results show small differences from the Seiff et al. (1980) values for the adiabatic lapse rate which may be significant where the Venus atmosphere is close to being neutral. For accurate knowledge of the static stability for atmosphere circulation, a local value of the adiabatic lapse rate is necessary.

Abstract

International audience; Venus is completely enveloped by clouds. The main cloud layers stretch from altitudes of 48 – 75 km, with additional tenuous hazes found at altitudes 30 – 100 km. Clouds play a crucial role in governing atmospheric circulation, chemistry and climate on all planets, but particularly so on Venus due to the optical thickness of the atmosphere. The European Space Agency’s Venus Express (VEx) satellite has carried out a wealth of observations of Venus clouds since its arrival at Venus in April 2006. Many VEx observations are relevant to cloud science – from imagers and spectrometers to solar, stellar and radio occultation – each covering different altitude ranges, spectral ranges and atmospheric constituents.We have formed an International Team at the International Space Science Institute to bring together scientists from each of the relevant Venus Express investigation teams as well as from previous missions, as well as those developing computational and analytical models of clouds and hazes. The aims of the project are (1) to perform intercomparisons of cloud parameters measured using different techniques, (1) to create self-consistent reference cloud/haze models which capture not only a mean cloud structure but also its main modes of variability; and (2) to bring together modelers and observers, to reach an understanding of clouds and hazes on Venus which matches all observables and is physically consistent.This talk will present an overview of Venus Express cloud observations of all different types, and discuss progress towards a new reference cloud model to be submitted to an update of the Venus International Reference Atmosphere.
