We proposed a novel method, using an asymmetric four grating compressor (AFGC) to improve the spatial uniformity of laser beams, to suppress the small-scale self-focusing (SSSF) during the post-compression of ultrahigh peak power lasers. The spatial uniformity is an important factor in performing post-compression, due to the spatial intensity nonuniformity will be enhanced while going through a nonlinear process. And what's more, the strong intensity spikes induced during nonlinear process can seriously damage the subsequent optical components. Moreover, the three-dimensional numerical simulations of the post-compression are implemented based on a petawatt (PW) class laser with a standard compressor and an AFGC. The results show that the post-compression with AFGC can shorten the laser pulses from 30fs to sub-10fs and meanwhile efficiently suppress SSSF. This work provides a promising scheme for the post-compression scaling to PW and even 10PW lasers.

Relativistic vortex particles offer a promising avenue for investigating and manipulating processes in high-energy and nuclear physics, as they provide an additional degree of freedom in the form of orbital-angular-momentum (OAM). Despite the potential benefits, the generation and detection of these particles have proven to be a significant challenge. In this work, we present a new method for producing high-energy vortex electrons and $\gamma$-photons by colliding relativistic electrons with circularly polarized laser pulses in the radiation-dominated quantum electrodynamics (QED) regime. We use the laser-dressed vortex state to develop a nonlinear scattering theory, which allows us to understand the transfer of spin angular momenta (SAM) to intrinsic OAM in the highly nonlinear multi-photon process. The theory shows that electrons in the vortex state carry higher intrinsic OAM when radiation-reaction becomes significant, with the central OAM number proportional to the amount of energy taken by the $\gamma$-photon. This study provides an effective approach to generating high-energy vortex electron beams using laser intensities that are currently achievable. Additionally, the emission spectra of energetic electrons in vortex states are found to exhibit multi-peaks, which sets them apart from plane-wave electrons and makes them easier to distinguish.

Self-compression is a simple method to achieve ultrashort and ultraintense pulses. By solving a modified nonlinear Schrodinger equation considering the fifth-order susceptibility, it is found that self-compression appeared even in normally dispersive media owing to the negative fifth-order susceptibility inducing a mass of negative frequency chirp. Furthermore, negatively pre-chirped pulses help to achieve pulse self-compression at lower input peak intensity which will avoid the damage of media. The optimized-choosing of pre-chirp, input intensity and length of media are numerically analyzed. Proof-of-principle experiments successfully prove the above theoretical findings. Sub-femtosecond x-ray burst is powerful tool for probing and imaging electronic and concomitant atomic motion in attosecond physics. For years, x-ray source (above 2 keV) had mainly been obtained from X-ray free electron laser (XFEL) or synchrotron radiation, which are high energy consumption, high cost and huge volume. Here we propose a low-cost and small-size method to generate X-ray source. We experimentally obtained high photon energy spectrum (~ 5.2 keV) through both atom and multiple valence state ions using a near-infrared 1.45 {\mu}m driving laser interacting with krypton gas, according to our knowledge, which is the highest photon energy generated through high-order harmonic generation up to now. In our scheme, multi-keV photon energy can be achieved with a relaxed requirement on experimental conditions, and make time-resolved studies more accessible to many laboratories that are capable of producing high energy photon extending to hard x-ray region. Research on laser-plasma interaction in the quantum-electrodynamic (QED) regime has been greatly advanced by particle-in-cell & Monte-Carlo simulations (PIC-MC). While these simulations are widely used, we find that noticeable numerical error arises due to inappropriate implementation of the quantum process accounting for hard photon emission and pair production in the PIC-MC codes. The error stems from the low resolution of the QED table used to sample photon energy, which is generated in the logarithmic scale and cannot resolve high energy photons. We propose a new sampling method via Sigmoid function that handles both the low energy and high energy end of the photon emission spectrum. It guarantees the accuracy of PIC-MC algorithms for hard photon radiation and other related processes in the strong-field QED regime., 21 pages, 9 figures

To improve pulse contrast in chirped pulse amplification petawatt laser systems, the regenerative amplifier is substituted with a multipass amplifier at the Shanghai Superintense Ultrafast Laser Facility (SULF). To reduce the consequent angular dispersion of the broadband spectrum, a double-grating stretcher is established in the SULF front end. A grating compressor is set up for the 10-PW front end to obtain 20-TW output. An accurate adjustment method of grating attitude (angular position) is presented, which references the direction of gravity, improving dispersion management and focusing ability of the beam. After a pulse passes the front end compressor, its duration and phase in the frequency domain are measured, and the duration can be continuously compressed to &lt, 24 fs.

A multistage smoothing multistep pulse compressor (MPC) based on a single-pass single-grating-pair (SSGP) main compressor is proposed to simplify the entire petawatt (PW) compressor. Only one grating pair with relatively long distance is used to generate the same amount of spectral dispersion in the main compressor compared with a four-grating main compressor. As the SSGP induces the largest spatial dispersion, it can introduce the best beam-smoothing effect to the laser beam on the last grating. When considering the diffraction loss of only two gratings, the total compression efficiency of the SSGP main compressor is even larger than that of a four-grating main compressor. Furthermore, the spatiotemporal aberration induced by single-grating-pair can be compensated effectively by using deformable mirrors, however it is difficult or complicated to be well compensated in a four-grating compressor. Ultrahigh peak power lasers are important scientific tools for frontier laser-physics researches, in which both the peak power improvement and operating safety are very important meanwhile limited by the damage threshold and size of compression gratings currently. Based on a recent reported method "multistep pulse compressor (MPC)", a multistage smoothing based MPC (MS-MPC) is proposed here to further improve the running safety, operating convenience, and simplify the whole setup of the MPC. In this optimized design, the beam smoothing is not simply executed in the pre-compressor or main-compressor, but separated into multistage. Then, it can protect important optics in every stage directly and reduce the executing difficult of typical MPC at the same time. The prism pair based pre-compressor will induce suitable spatial dispersion which is easier to be achieved and enough to protect the first grating directly. At the same time, the asymmetric four-grating compressor (AFGC) will also induce spatial dispersion to further smooth the laser beam which helps to protect the last grating directly. In this way, 10s-100s PW lasers can be compressed by using current available optics with improved operating safety owing to remove random spatial intensity modulations. Furthermore, an additional beam smoothing stage can be added before the main amplifier to protect the biggest amplification crystal away from damage. This MS-MPC optical design can be easily extended to be used in all exist PW laser facilities to improve their potential compressed pulse energy and running safety., Comment: 15pages, 7 figures

Spatiotemporal optical vortex (STOV) is a unique optical vortex with phase singularity in the space-time domain and the photons in a STOV can carry transverse orbital angular momentum (OAM). The STOV shows many fantastic properties which are worth exploring. Here, we theoretically and experimentally study the diffraction property of STOV, which is a fundamental wave phenomenon. The diffraction behaviors of STOVs are obviously affected by the transverse OAM. The diffraction patterns of STOV pulses diffracted by a grating show multi-lobe structure with each gap corresponding to 1 topological charge. The diffraction properties of lights with transverse OAM are demonstrated clearly and help us understanding the physical properties of STOV, which will be of special applications, such as the realization of fast detection of STOVs with different topological charges, which may pay the way for STOV based optical communication., Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures

In this work using three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations and analytical considerations we demonstrate intense high-order plasma surface harmonics carrying a time-varying orbital angular momentum (OAM) -- the self-torque. We show that by using two laser beams with different OAMs $l_1$ and $l_2$ and a certain delay between each other and shooting them obliquely on an overdense plasma target, one can generate harmonics with OAM spanning $nl_1$ to $nl_2$, where $n$ is the order of the harmonic. Such intense self-torqued harmonics can offer new possibilities in ultrafast spectroscopy., 12 pages, 4 figures

Optical sectioning technology has been widely used in various fluorescence microscopes owing to its background removing capability. Here, a virtual HiLo based on edge detection (V-HiLo-ED) is proposed to achieve wide-field optical sectioning, which requires only single wide-field image. Compared with conventional optical sectioning technologies, its imaging speed can be increased by at least twice, meanwhile maintaining nice optical sectioning performance, low cost, and excellent artifact suppression capabilities. Furthermore, the new V-HiLo-ED can also be extended to other non-fluorescence imaging fields. Increasing any degree of freedom of light beam may open a wide application area of this special light beam. Vortex beam with a dimension of orbital angular momentum (OAM) as a useful light source has been widely applied in many fields. Here, unique multicolor concentric ultrafast vortex beams (MUCU-VBs), which are also named ultrafast photonic rainbow, with controllable orbital angular momentum are firstly generated using cascaded four-wave mixing (CFWM) in an yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG) plate. Up to 9 multicolor concentric annular ultrafast vortex sidebands are generated simultaneously. The topological charges of the sidebands, which are controllable by changing the topological charges of the two input pump beams, are measured and in according with the theoretical analysis very well. The novel MUCU-VBs can be manipulated simultaneously in temporal, spatial, spectral domains and OAM state, which open more than one new degree of freedoms of vortex light beam and will be of wide and special applications, such as multicolor pump-probe experiments, simultaneous microparticle manipulation and exploring, and optical communication. High-energy tens (10s) to hundreds (100s) petawatt (PW) lasers are key tools for exploring frontier fundamental researches such as strong-field quantum electrodynamics (QED), and the generation of positron-electron pair from vacuum. Recently, pulse compressor became the main obstacle on achieving higher peak power due to the limitation of damage threshold and size of diffraction gratings. Here, we propose a feasible multistep pulse compressor (MPC) to increase the maximum bearable input and output pulse energies through modifying their spatiotemporal properties. Typically, the new MPC including a prism pair for pre-compression, a four-grating compressor (FGC) for main compression, and a spatiotemporal focusing based self-compressor for post-compression. The prism pair can induce spatial dispersion to smooth and enlarge the laser beam, which increase the maximum input and output pulse energies. As a result, as high as 100 PW laser with single beam or more than 150 PW through combining two beams can be obtained by using MPC and current available optics. This new optical design will simplify the compressor, improve the stability, and save expensive gratings/optics simultaneously. Together with the multi-beam tiled-aperture combining method, the tiled-grating method, larger gratings, or negative chirp pulse based self-compression method, several 100s PW laser beam is expected to be obtained by using this MPC method in the future, which will further extend the ultra-intense laser physics research fields., 18 pages, 10 figures

The peak power improvement and running safety of petawatt (PW) lasers are limited by laser-induced damage of optical components with limited sizes and damage thresholds. Diffraction gratings in pulse compressors have been the shortest stave of PW lasers up to now, as to manufacture a high quality meter-sized grating remains particularly challenging. Here, the asymmetric four-grating compressor (AFGC) with asymmetric configuration is proposed for PW lasers to increase the maximum bearable output pulse energy and running safety without neither additional optical component nor extra control in comparison to a traditional Treacy four-grating compressor (TFGC) with symmetric configuration. In AFGC, suitable spatial dispersion can be introduced in the output laser beam which is able to decrease the laser spatial intensity modulation (LSIM) of the output beam on the final grating. The introduced spatial dispersion can be automatically compensated at the focal plane by using the spatiotemporal focusing technique. Based on this simple AFGC design, not only the damage risk of the final grating can be reduced, but also the maximum output pulse energy can be improved by about 1.8 times theoretically. Supercontinuum (SC) light source has advanced ultrafast laser spectroscopy in condensed matter science, biology, physics, and chemistry. Compared to the frequently used photonic crystal fibers and bulk materials, femtosecond laser filamentation in gases is damage-immune for supercontinuum generation. A bottleneck problem is the strong jitters from filament induced self-heating at kHz repetition rate level. We demonstrate stable kHz supercontinuum generation directly in air with multiple mJ level pulse energy. This is achieved by applying an external DC electric field to the air plasma filament through the effects of plasma wave guiding and Coulomb interaction. Both pointing and intensity jitters of 1 kHz air filament induced SC light are reduced by more than 2 fold. This offers the opportunities for stable intense SC generation and other laser filament based applications in air.

One of the most serious bottleneck on achieving kilojoule-level high-energy petawatt (PW) to hundreds-petawatt (100PW) lasers with ps to fs pulse duration is the requirement of as large as meter-sized gratings in the compressor so as to avoid the laser-induced damage to the gratings. However, this kind of meter-sized grating with high quality is hard to manufacture so far. Here, we propose a new in-house beam-splitting compressor based on the property that the damage threshold of gratings depend on the pulse duration. The new scheme will simultaneously improve the stability, save expensive gratings, and simplify the size of compressor because the split beams share the first two parallel gratings. Furthermore, based on the fact that the transmitted wavefront of a glass plate can be much better and more precisely controlled than that of the diffraction wavefront of a large grating, then glass plates with designed transmitted wavefront are proposed to compensate the wavefront distortion introduced by the second, the third gratings, and other optics in-house such as the beam splitter. This simple and economical method can compensate the space-time distortion in the compressor and then improve the focal intensity, which otherwise cannot be compensated by the deformable mirror outside the compressor due to angular chirp. Together with multi-beams tiled-aperture combining scheme, the novel compressor provides a new scheme to achieve high-energy PW-100PW lasers or even exawatt lasers with relatively small gratings in the future., 6 figures

We propose a filter method to generate electron beams of high polarization from bubble and blow-out wakefield accelerators. The mechanism is based on the idea to identify all electron-beam subsets with low-polarization and to filter them out by an X-shaped slit placed right behind the plasma accelerator. To find these subsets we investigate the dependence between the initial azimuthal angle and the spin of single electrons during the trapping process. This dependence shows that transverse electron spins preserve their orientation during injection if they are initially aligned parallel or anti-parallel to the local magnetic field. We derive a precise correlation of the local beam polarization as a function of the coordinate and the electron phase angle. Three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations, incorporating classical spin dynamics, show that the beam polarization can be increased from 35% to about 80% after spin filtering. The injected flux is strongly restricted to preserve the beam polarization, e.g.

The upper limit of the laser field strength in perfect vacuum is usually considered as the Schwinger field, corresponding to ~10^29W/cm^2. We investigate such limitations under realistic non-ideal vacuum conditions and find out that intensity suppression appears starting from 10^25W/cm^2, showing an upper threshold at 1026W/cm^2 level if the residual electron density in chamber surpasses 109cm^-^3. This is because the presence of residual electrons triggers the avalanche of quantum-electrodynamics cascade that creates copious electron and positron pairs. The leptons are further trapped within the driving laser field due to radiation-reaction, which significantly depletes the laser energy. The relationship between the attainable intensity and the vacuity is given according to particle-in-cell simulations and theoretical analysis. These results answer a critical problem on the achievable light intensity based on present vacuum conditions and provide a guideline for future 100's-Petawatt class laser development., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures

Young stellar objects/planetary nebula outflow anisotropies usually involve wind-wind interactions and magnetic collimation, but detailed structures of wind and magnetic fields inside collimation region remain undetermined. We numerically investigated its laboratory counterpart, based on poloidal field collimation in magnetocentrifugal launching model. Our analog consist of fast wind: Aluminum plasma generated by laser and magnetized ambient: molecular Helium and B=5-60 Tesla embedded field. Elevating magnetic field strength or decreasing gas density can alter expansion morphology, from sphere to prolonged cavity and ultimately to collimated jet. Outflow patterns can be quantitatively predicted based on the knowledge of its surroundings through a set of external Mach numbers. We conclude that such mixed gas and magnetic field dynamics are consistent with astronomical observations of protostars and planetary nebulae in certain evolution stages, and here provide a scalable framework allowing fitting of flow-field structures in astronomical unresolved regions by assuming their possible geometries on a repeatable laboratory platform., 18 pages with 7 figures and 1 table

The generation of the below threshold harmonics (BTHs) under different driving laser intensities is investigated. The linearly shifting of photon energy and resonantly enhancement of photon yield of the harmonics from 23rd (H23) to 27th (H27) are found by changing the laser intensity around 18.6 TW/cm2. It is identified that this driving laser intensity dependence is due to the transient ac Stark-shifted resonance between the first excited state and the ground state. With this transient ac Stark, the linearly shifting of the photon energy can be interpreted very well by considering the sub-cycle electron dynamics for BTH generation, which shows that the generation of the BTHs is surprisingly similar to the plateau harmonics., 26 pages, 4 figures

A single-shot characterization of the temporal contrast of a petawatt laser pulse with a high dynamic-range, is important not only for improving conditions of the petawatt laser facility itself, but also for various high-intensity laser physics experiments, which is still a difficult problem. In this study, a new idea for improving the dynamic-range of a single-shot temporal contrast measurement using novel temporal contrast reduction techniques is proposed. The proof-of-principle experiments applying single stage of pulse stretching, anti-saturated absorption, or optical Kerr effect successfully reduce the temporal contrast by approximately one order of magnitude. Combining with the SRSI-ETE method, its dynamic-range characterization capability is improved by approximately one order of magnitude to approximately 109. It is expected that a higher dynamic-range temporal contrast can be characterized using cascaded temporal contrast reduction processes., 29 pages, 7 figures

Polarization dependence on clamping intensity inside femtosecond filament was experimentally measured in air. By tuning the laser pulse ellipse from linear polarization to circular polarization, the measured clamping intensity inside laser filament is gradually increased up to 1.7 times. The experimental results are in good agreement with the simulation results by solving the extended nonlinear Schrodinger equation (NLSE). The polarization sensitive clamping intensity inside filaments offers an important factor towards fully understanding the polarization related phenomenon observed so far.

Real-time single-shot measurement of the femtosecond electron beam duration in laser wakefield accelerators is discussed for both experimental design and theoretical analysis that combines polarimetry and interferometry. The probe pulse polarization is rotated by the azimuthal magnetic field of the electron beam and then introduced into a Michelson-type interferometer for self-interference. The electron beam duration is obtained from the region size of the interference fringes, which is independent of the pulse width of the probe laser. Using a larger magnification system or incident angle, the measurement resolution can be less than 1 fs.

Based upon experimental observation in the laboratory, we propose that ionic wind from corona discharge inside a thundercloud would play an important role in producing a rain gush. A cyclic chain of events inside a super-saturated environment in a thundercloud is proposed, each event enhancing the successive ones until lightning occurs. These successive events are collision between snowflakes and rimers, charge separation, corona discharge, avalanche ionization, ionic wind originating from the positively and negatively charged masses of cloud, vortex motion and turbulence when mixed with the updraft, more collision, more charge separation, stronger corona discharge, and so on. Meanwhile, avalanche ionization would produce more CCN (cloud condensation nuclei) resulting in more precipitation and hence rimers formation in the super-saturated environment. More collision in the buoyant turbulence would lead to more fusion of droplets and the formation of larger rimers. The cyclic processes would repeat themselves until the electric field between the two oppositely charged masses of cloud was strong enough to induce a breakdown. The latter would create a sudden short circuit between the two charged masses of cloud neutralizing the charges. There would be no more ionic wind, hence, much less buoyant turbulence. The updraft alone would not be sufficiently strong to support larger rimers which would fall down 'suddenly' to the earth surface as a rain gush.

The laser-plasma accelerator has attracted great interest for constituting an alternative in the production of the relativistic electron beams of high peak current. But the generated electron beam has poor monochrome and emittance, which make it difficult to produce high brightness radiation. Here we propose a compact flexible laser undulator based on ponderomotive force to constitute a millimeter-sized synchrotron radiation source of X-ray. We demonstrate that it can produce bright radiation with tens of keV energies. This opens a new path to compact synchrotron source with high power laser., 9 pages, 5 figures

A carrier envelope phase stable near-single cycle mid-infrared laser based on optical parametric chirped pulse amplification and hollow-core-fiber compression is demonstrated. 4 ��m laser pulses with 11.8 mJ energy are delivered from a KTA based OPCPA with 100 Hz repetition rate, and compressed to be ~105 fs by a two-grating compressor with efficiency over 50%. Subsequently, the pulse spectrum is broadened by employing a krypton gas-filled hollow-core-fiber (HCF). Then, the pulse duration is further compressed to 21.5 fs through a CaF2 bulk material with energy of 2.6 mJ and stability of 0.9% RMS, which is about 1.6 cycle for 4 ��m laser pulse. The near-single cycle 4 ��m laser pulse CEP is passively stabilized with ~370 mrad based on a CEP stable 4 ��m OPA injection.

We theoretically investigate the generation of intense keV attosecond pulses in an orthogonally polarized multicycle midinfrared two-color laser field. It is demonstrated that multiple continuum-like humps, which have a spectral width of about twenty orders of harmonics and an intensity of about one order higher than adjacent normal harmonic peaks, are generated under proper two-color delays, owing to the reduction of the number of electron-ion recollisions and suppression of inter-half-cycle interference effect of multiple electron trajectories when the long wavelength midinfrared driving field is used. Using the semiclassical trajectory model, we have revealed the two-dimensional manipulation of the electron-ion recollision process, which agrees well with the time frequency analysis. By filtering these humps, intense isolated attosecond pulses are directly generated without any phase compensation. We demonstrated for the first time the condensation and precipitation (or snowfall) induced by a corona discharge inside a cloud chamber. Ionic wind was found to have played a more significant role than ions as extra Cloud Condensation Nuclei (CCN). 2.25 g of net snow enhancement was measured after applying a 30 kV corona discharge for 25 min. In comparison with another newly emerging femtosecond laser filamentation method, the snow precipitation induced by the corona discharge has about 4 orders of magnitude higher wall-plug efficiency under similar conditions., An articles with 21 pages and 5 figures on corona discharge induced snowfall

Laser driven particle acceleration has shown remarkable progresses in generating multi-GeV electron bunches and 10s of MeV ion beams based on high-power laser facilities. Intense laser pulse offers the acceleration field of 1012 Volt per meter, several orders of magnitude larger than that in conventional accelerators, enabling compact devices. Here we report that a highly-collimated argon ion beam with narrow energy spread is produced by irradiating a 45-fs fully-relativistic laser pulse onto an argon cluster target. The highly-charged (Argon ion with charge state of 16+) heavy ion beam has a minimum absolute energy spread of 0.19 MeV per nucleon at the energy peak of 0.39 MeV per nucleon. we identify a novel scheme from particle-in-cell simulations that greatly reduces the beam energy spread. The laser-driven intense plasma wakefield has a strong modulation on the ion beam in a way that the low energy part is cut off. The pre-accelerated argon ion beam from Coulomb explosion thus becomes more mono-energetic and collimated., It contains 4 figures in 9 pages

The electronic dynamics of collective motion is revealed from the high harmonic generation of gaseous clusters, and the contribution of plasma oscillation to the terahertz emission is discussed in jet plasma source condition. Article not available.

Atomic clusters presents an isolated system that models the bulk materials whose mechanism of HHG remains uncertain, and a promising medium to produce HHG beyond the limited conversion efficiency for gaseous atoms. Here we reveal that the oscillation of collective electron motion within clusters develops after the interaction of intense laser fields, and it significantly enhances the harmonic dipole and increases the quantum phase of the harmonics. Experimentally, the phase matching conditions of HHG from nanometer xenon clusters and atoms are distinguished, which confirms the enhanced internal field that was proposed theoretically a decade ago. The separation of HHG from atoms and clusters allows the determination of the amplitude of the HHG for clusters to be 5 orders higher, corresponding to 4 times higher conversion efficiency for atomic response. The finding provides an insight on the HHG mechanism of bulk materials and a means by which an efficient coherent X-ray source can be developed.

We demonstrate the generation of waveform-controlled THz radiation from air plasma that is produced when carrier envelope phase (CEP) stabilized few-cycle laser pulses undergoes filamentation in ambient air. Elliptically polarized THz waves are generated from air plasma induced by circularly polarized few-cycle laser pulses. Our results reveal that electric field asymmetry in rotating directions of the circularly polarized few-cycle laser pulses produces the enhanced broadband transient currents, and the phase difference of perpendicular laser field components is partially inherited in the generation process of THz emission.

Extreme ultraviolet (XUV) attosecond pulses, generated by a process known as laser-induced electron recollision, are a key ingredient for attosecond metrology, providing a tool to precisely initiate and probe sub-femtosecond dynamics in the microcosms of atoms, molecules and solids[1]. However, with the current technology, extending attosecond metrology to scrutinize the dynamics of the inner-shell electrons is a challenge, that is because of the lower efficiency in generating the required soft x-ray \hbar\omega>300 eV attosecond bursts and the lower absorption cross-sections in this spectral range. A way around this problem is to use the recolliding electron to directly initiate the desired inner-shell process, instead of using the currently low flux x-ray attosecond sources.Such an excitation process occurs in a sub-femtosecond timescale, and may provide the necessary "pump" step in a pump-probe experiment[2]. Here we used a few cycle infrared \lambda_{0}~1800nm source[3] and observed direct evidences for inner-shell excitations through the laser-induced electron recollision process. K-shell X-ray emission from a Cu nanowire target irradiated by an ultraintense femtosecond laser pulse is studied using an elliptically bent quartz crystal and imaging plate. The designed bent crystal spectrometer has better spectral resolution, which is higher than 1 000. The absolute K radiation photon yields are obtained from the experimental results and the Monte-Carlo model. The conversion efficiency of the Cu K line is estimated to be 0.019% from the interaction of 4 J, 50-fs laser pulse irradiated on a Cu nanowire target. The high yield of K shell X-ray has important applications in X-ray emission source.

We demonstrated a novel and simple device for femtosecond pulses characterization which combined both FROG and the self-referenced spectral interferometry methods. Then, it can be used to characterize femtosecond pulses at different conditions.

We demonstrate that the coherent control of unimolecular reactions by using a waveform-controlled laser fields can lead to a strong modulation on the yield of the reaction. By using a synthesized ω (1800-nm) and 3ω (600-nm) two-color laser field, the probability of photodissociation of H2+ can be strongly modulated by varying the relative phase between the two colors. The dissociation probability maximizes at different relative phases for protons with different kinetic energy, and such energy dependence can also be qualitatively reproduced by our simulation. We attribute the observed dissociation probability modulation to the interference between two different dissociation pathways which start from the same electronic states and end with the same kinetic energy.
