The continuous growth of elderly population cohorts represents a global phenomenon influencing the design of any country’s economic and social policies. In the present context, an urban development planning challenge is encouraging an active and healthy lifestyle, transforming seniors into an economically and socially active group that further ensures their successful active ageing and respects place attachment values. This study aims to depict an overall image of the possibility to achieve active ageing for Bucharest’s elderly and their perception of this matter. In order to do so, the research appealed to the survey method for a total sample of 402 residents aged 65+ and living in all districts of Bucharest. The research objectives follow the main pillars of the active ageing concept that is assessing: their financial security and reasons motivating them to work after retiring, their capacity and needs for independent living, their access to health services and the enabling environment, which can act both as a facilitator and a barrier. The main results reveal that an active lifestyle depends on socio-economic and psychological characteristics and that the elderly’s contribution to economic life is often a continuation of their previous activities, not necessarily a result of successful policies for achieving active ageing. All these, next to low revenues, low access to health care, and limited usage capacity for ICT tools, define obvious difficulties for designing future urban friendly-ageing policies in Bucharest. This research represents a valuable contribution from the pre-COVID period, which may be complemented by further studies that contrast current perspectives on the topic.

Meudon Observatory was created for Janssen in 1876 for physical astronomy, as a reaction to the conservative Paris Observatory. It merged in 1927 with this observatory, while keeping in practice some autonomy. It was very well equipped, with a great equatorial, a 1-m reflecting telescope and several novel solar instruments, but except for the latter they were not very much used due to lack of personnel and because of technical deficiencies. A modern equatorial table was installed in 1931 and became the main non-solar instrument. A physics laboratory had been installed from the beginning, producing data useful for astronomy; it was the responsibility of a 'Physicist of the Observatory'. In this paper, I describe the life at Meudon until the arrival of radio astronomers in 1956 and the nomination in 1963 of a radio astronomer as director, events that produced considerable changes in Meudon Observatory.

Food supply has been a constant source of concern for mankind. In the present context, with food security a priority of European and national policies, an analysis of pig farming in a representative NUTS2 administrative level of Romania that emphasizes the proportion of households raising at least one pig and the main factors influencing farmers to adopt or give up swine breeding could allow a much clearer understanding of this phenomenon that lies at the border between cultural tradition and socio-economic necessity. This study uses mixed methods that complement each another to help reveal this complex phenomenon in the analyzed territory. Cluster analysis shows the concentration of swine breeding and maps its spread in terms of both subsistence and larger farms, and qualitative interviews prove the motivation of farmers to continue in this occupation. As a primary result, the study visualizes the spatial distribution of pig farming in the rural environment of Vâlcea county, Romania, from a diachronic perspective in the post-communist period. It also reveals areas of differing concentrations of both very small-sized farms, which prioritize meeting their own food needs, and larger farms, which prioritize commercial production to supplement their revenue streams. Both categories, but particularly the latter, are of particular interest in a period in which the socio-economic environment after 1990—marked by economic restructuring, unemployment, population migration, the economic crisis of 2008–2010, the pandemic of 2020–2021, and the most recent energy crisis—periodically highlights the importance of rural areas in ensuring food security and sufficiency at both the local and regional levels.

International audience; Major international practice guidelines recommend the use of a combination of 4 medication classes in the treatment of patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) but do not specify how these treatments should be introduced and up-titrated. Consequently, many patients with HFrEF do not receive an optimized treatment regimen. This review proposes a pragmatic algorithm for treatment optimization designed to be easily applied in routine practice. The first goal is to ensure that all 4 recommended medication classes are initiated as early as possible to establish effective therapy, even at a low dose. This is considered preferable to starting fewer medications at a maximum dose. The second goal is to ensure that the intervals between the introduction of different medications and between different titration steps are as short as possible to ensure patient safety. Specific proposals are made for older patients (> 75 years) who are frail, and for those with cardiac rhythm disorders. Application of this algorithm should allow an optimal treatment protocol to be achieved within 2-months in most patients, which should the treatment goal in HFrEF.

International audience; Perpendicular shape anisotropy (PSA) offers a practical solution to downscale spin-transfer torque magnetoresistive random-access memory (STT-MRAM) beyond the sub-20 nm technology node while retaining thermal stability. However, our understanding of the thermomagnetic behavior of PSA-STT-MRAM is often indirect, relying on magnetoresistance measurements and micromagnetic modeling. Here, the magnetism of a NiFe PSA-STT-MRAM nanopillar is investigated using off-axis electron holography, providing spatially resolved magnetic information as a function of temperature. Magnetic induction maps reveal the micromagnetic configuration of the NiFe storage layer (∼60 nm high, ≤20 nm diameter), confirming the PSA induced by its 3:1 aspect ratio. In situ heating demonstrates that the PSA of the storage layer is maintained up to at least 250 °C, and direct quantitative measurements reveal a moderate decrease of magnetic induction. Hence, this study shows explicitly that PSA provides significant stability in STT-MRAM applications that require reliable performance over a range of operating temperatures.

15. Virtual approach of the aesthetical fit between hair colours and skin tones in women of different ethnical origin backgrounds

To determine the aesthetical accordance between a given skin tone and the 11 possible colours of head hairs, covered by a marketed hair colouration product.The photographs of professional top models, representing several ancestries (non-Hispanic European and Euro-American, East Asian, Hispanic Euro-American, and African-American ancestries), were used to virtually modify skin tones (from light, medium to dark) and hair colour by an artificial intelligence (AI)-based algorithm. Hence, 117 modified photographs were then assessed by five local panels of about 60 women each (one in China, one in France and three in US). The same questionnaire was given to the panels, written in their own language, asking which and how both skin tones and hair colours fit preferentially (or not appreciated), asking in addition the reasons of their choices, using fixed wordings.Answers from the five panels differed according to origin or cultural aspects, although some agreements were found among both non-Hispanic European and Euro-American groups. The Hispanic American panel in US globally much appreciated darker hair tones (HTs). Two panels (East Asian in China and African American in US) and part of non-Hispanic European panel in France declared appreciating all HTs, almost irrespective with the skin tone (light, medium and dark). This surprising result is very likely caused by gradings (in %) that differ by too low values, making the establishment of a decisive or significant assessment. By nature highly subjective (culturally and/or fashion driven), the assessments should be more viewed as trends, an unavoidable limit of the present virtual approach. The latter offers nevertheless a full respect of ethical rules as such objective could hardly be conducted in vivo: applying 10 or 11 hair colourations on the same individual is an unthinkable option.The virtual approach developed in the present study that mixes two major facial coloured phenotypes seems at the crossroad of both genetic backgrounds and the secular desire of a modified appearance. Nonetheless, this methodology could afford, at the individual level in total confidentiality, a great help to subjects exposed to some facial skin disorders or afflictions.

International audience; In this paper, we explore the advances made in France in astronomical optics. They were quite important in the seventeenth century thanks to Mersenne, Auzout and Picard. Progress in the eighteenth century was less remarkable and many instruments had to be imported from England, but in the following century the developments were again significant thanks in particular to Arago, Foucault, Fizeau, Loewy and the Henry brothers, working with very competent instrument builders. The French school of optics flourished at the end of the nineteenth century and during the twentieth century, thanks to Fabry, his collaborators and successors, as illustrated by Perot, Chrétien, Lyot, Danjon, Paul, Couder, Courtès, Connes, Labeyrie, Baranne and Lemaitre, among others. However, from time to time there was a trend to build instruments that were too original and with little or no future, at the expense of more conventional but better-adapted instruments.

17. Uptake kinetics of spontaneously emulsified microdroplets at an air–liquid interface

Understanding the transfers occurring at the interfaces between emulsions and air is required to predict the properties of foamed emulsions, used for example as antifoaming lubricants or for oil extraction. Whereas bubbling oil-in-water emulsions have been studied in details, oil-in-oil emulsions have received less attention. We consider a phase-separating mixture of three oils being Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), decane and cyclopentanol. PDMS is dispersed as submicrometer-sized droplets by spontaneous emulsification. In bulk, we show that the time evolution of the emulsion is driven by undelayed coalescence of the Brownian microdroplets. At the freshly created interface of an air bubble created in the emulsion, we use tensiometry measurements to investigate the uptake kinetics of PDMS-rich microdroplets at the air-liquid interface. Specifically, we evidence two mechanisms of uptake: the advection of droplets at the interface during bubble swelling, followed by their diffusion on a longer time scale. We model the growth of the PDMS-rich layer at the interface and, finally, we establish the surface energy of a thin film of PDMS-rich phase squeezed between air and liquid as a function of its thickness.

We investigate the photon statistics of the light emitted by single self-assembled hybrid gold-CdSe/CdS/CdZnS colloidal nanocrystal supraparticles through the detailed analysis of the intensity autocorrelation function $g^{(2)}(\tau)$. We first reveal that, despite the large number of nanocrystals involved in the supraparticle emission, antibunching can be observed. We then present a model based on non-coherent F\"orster energy transfer and Auger recombination that well captures photon antibunching. Finally, we demonstrate that some supraparticles exhibit a bunching effect at short time scales corresponding to coherent collective emission.

Fluid gels are jammed suspensions made of deformable particles obtained by applying shear during the sol-gel transition of a hydrocolloid. Their rheological properties have been shown to be subject to large uncertainty and to change over time undergoing an ageing process. In the present fluid gel literature, it is not known whether such ageing is due to physical ageing, formation of new ion bridges, gravitational effects, or a type of ripening. Methodologies were developed to understand and quantify the fluctuations in the rheological properties of the systems investigated, which were shown to be intrinsic to their jammed particulated microstructure and reminiscent of granular matter. In addition, the time dependent evolution of the rheological properties of fluid gels have been investigated in detail. For the first time, our work determined that the time evolution of the relaxation time is not due to the ripening of the particles, to new ion bridges, and not caused by gravity-induced effects. Our results instead suggest that is caused by physical ageing which is a behaviour reminiscent of colloidal glasses. In this regard, the present study aims not only to support future systematic rheological analysis, considering the intrinsic fluctuations and the time dependency of the rheological properties, but also serves as an aid to successfully design and scale-up industrial applications.

When the width of the jet, w, is larger than the channel height, H, the surface tension driven Rayleigh-Plateau instability is suppressed so that the 2D (bidimensional)-confined jet is absolutely stable and never collapses into bubbles (or drops) in contrast to what occurs when w ≤ H [Dollet et al., "Role of the channel geometry on the bubble pinch-off in flow-focusing,"Phys. Rev. Lett. 100(3), 034504 (2008); Guillot et al., "Stability of a jet in confined pressure-driven biphasic flows at low Reynolds number in various geometries,"Phys. Rev. E 78(1), 016307 (2008)]. We here demonstrate both experimentally and theoretically that this picture is, indeed, no longer valid when Marangoni effects are considered. We experimentally show that the addition of small length alcohol molecules into the liquid phase destabilizes a 2D-confined gas-water microfluidic stream (w > H), leading to the generation of steady non-linear waves and further to the production of bubbles. Using a simple hydrodynamic model, we show through a linear analysis that the destabilization of the gas stream may result from a Marangoni instability due to the fast adsorption of the alcohol molecules, which occurs on a timescale comparable to that of the microfluidic flow. © 2023 Author(s).

The author belongs to the second generation of radio astronomers. He started observing in 1954 with a German Riese-Würzburg radar transformed into a radio telescope, then in 1959-1963 with a two- Würzburg variable-spacing interferometer. He participated in the construction of the Nançay Large Radio Telescope, and used the Owens Valley Observatory interferometer during a stay in Caltech (1968-1969). He was deeply involved in the genesis of the French-German-Spanish Institute of Radio Astronomy at Millimeter waves (IRAM). His contacts with radio astronomers worldwide are described. In recent years, he participated in a series of seven papers devoted to the history of radio astronomy in France, published in this journal.

When a drop laden with solid particles and suspended in a liquid passes through a narrow pore, its interface experiences strong shear and elongation, and the raft of particles may accumulate toward the back of the drop. Using well controlled formulations of Pickering drops driven at set pressure, we determine the two conditions for which solid particles are expelled from the oil-water interface after a Pickering drop passes a converging-diverging pore: (i) particles accumulation at the rear of the drop is such that surface pressure builds-up at the interface. (ii) Surface pressure relaxation by buckling is impaired by geometrical constraints. These two conditions are rationalized using three non dimensional numbers: the capillary number, the particle to pore size ratio, and the drop to particle size ratio, which allow to account for the viscous shear at the interface, the stability of the lubricating film between the pore wall and the drop, the drag on the raft of particles adsorbed at the interface, and its mechanical behaviour.

- Abstract
Coupling an ensemble of fluorescent emitters with a plasmonic resonator opens opportunities to control their emission properties at the nanoscale. However, synthesis of such hybrid colloidal nanostructures is challenging. In this manuscript, we report the synthesis of compact assemblies of semiconductor quantum dots encapsulated into a gold nanoshell. We discuss how the synthesis parameters enable full control of the architecture of the nanostructure. Optical properties are discussed and compared to theoretical models. Coupling of the emitters to the gold layer is evidenced by an acceleration of the photoluminescence decay and results in an improvement of the photostability.

34. Wolbachiagenomics reveals a potential for a nutrition-based symbiosis in blood-sucking Triatomine bugs

SummaryThe nutritional symbiosis promoted by bacteria is a key determinant for adaptation and evolution of many insect lineages. A complex form of nutritional mutualism that arose in blood-sucking insects critically depends on diverse bacterial symbionts that supplement the diet of their nutrient-poor hosts with B vitamins. For instance, the triatomine bugRhodnius prolixus, one of the main vectors of the Chagas disease in humans, is known to maintain a nutritional symbiosis with the gut symbiontsRhodococcus rhodnii.In this study, we show thatWolbachiasymbionts are also widely distributed in theRhodniusgenus. We have screened a large set ofRhodniusblood-sucking bugs samples belonging to 17 different species and to the three phylogenetic groups,prolixus, pallescensandpictipes. We assembled 13 genomes ofWolbachiainfecting eightRhodniusspecies fromprolixusandpictipesgroups. We demonstrate that theseWolbachiabelong to supergroup F and are closely related toWolbachiainfecting the bedbugCimex lectularius(wCle). Although bedbugs and triatomines are very distantly related hemipteran bugs, the genomes of their respectiveWolbachiawere highly similar, suggesting recent horizontal host switches. We also show thatRhodnius Wolbachiagenomes infecting theprolixusgroup encode intact biotin operon, the hallmark of nutritional symbiosis in bedbugs. This operon is lacking from all the otherWolbachiainfectingR. pictipes. Finally, host genome analyses provide evidence of massiveWolbachia-to-Rhodniusgene transfers in almost samples, providing footprints of past infections that support a widespread and probably ancient symbiotic association betweenWolbachiaand triatomine bugs.Our results suggest that bothWolbachiaandR. rhodniigut symbionts and theirRhodniushost maintain a highly prevalent symbiotic relationship, in which the vertically-inheritedWolbachiahas the metabolic potantial to ensure or complement, the nutritional mutualism provided by the gut symbionts. Specific loss of the biotin operon in some symbiont genomes suggests that the boundaries between obligatory mutualism, facultative mutualism and parasitism inWolbachiaare transient and fluid, supporting a dynamic process of transition and reversion from one state to another.

[Abstract] Aims. This study aimed to assess age‐ and sex‐related differences in management and 1‐year risk for all‐cause mortality and hospitalization in chronic heart failure (HF) patients. Methods and results. Of 16 354 patients included in the European Society of Cardiology Heart Failure Long‐Term Registry, 9428 chronic HF patients were analysed [median age: 66 years; 28.5% women; mean left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) 37%]. Rates of use of guideline‐directed medical therapy (GDMT) were high (angiotensin‐converting enzyme inhibitors/angiotensin receptor blockers, beta‐blockers and mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists: 85.7%, 88.7% and 58.8%, respectively). Crude GDMT utilization rates were lower in women than in men (all differences: P ≤ 0.001), and GDMT use became lower with ageing in both sexes, at baseline and at 1‐year follow‐up. Sex was not an independent predictor of GDMT prescription; however, age >75 years was a significant predictor of GDMT underutilization. Rates of all‐cause mortality were lower in women than in men (7.1% vs. 8.7%; P = 0.015), as were rates of all‐cause hospitalization (21.9% vs. 27.3%; P < 0.001) and there were no differences in causes of death. All‐cause mortality and all‐cause hospitalization increased with greater age in both sexes. Sex was not an independent predictor of 1‐year all‐cause mortality (restricted to patients with LVEF ≤45%). Mortality risk was significantly lower in patients of younger age, compared to patients aged >75 years. Conclusions. There was a decline in GDMT use with advanced age in both sexes. Sex was not an independent predictor of GDMT or adverse outcomes. However, age >75 years independently predicted lower GDMT use and higher all‐cause mortality in patients with LVEF ≤45%.

Background Acute heart failure (AHF) is a common serious condition that contributes to about 5% of all emergency hospital admissions in Europe. Hypothesis To assess the type and chronology of the first AHF symptoms before hospitalization and to examine the French healthcare system pathways before, during and after hospitalization. Material and Methods A retrospective observational study including patients hospitalized for AHF Results 793 patients were included, 59.0% were men, 45.6% identified heart failure (HF) as the main cause of hospitalization; 36.0% were unaware of their HF. Mean age was 72.9 ± 14.5 years. The symptoms occurring the most before hospitalization were dyspnea (64.7%) and lower limb edema (27.7%). Prior to hospitalization, 47% had already experienced symptoms for 15 days; 32% of them for 2 months. Referral to hospital was made by the emergency medical assistance service (SAMU, 41.6%), a general practitioner (GP, 22.3%), a cardiologist (19.5%), or the patient (16.6%). The modality of referral depended more on symptom acuteness than on type of symptoms. A sudden onset of AHF symptoms led to making an emergency call or to spontaneously attending an emergency room (ER), whereas cardiologists were consulted when symptoms had already been present for over 15 days. Cardiologists referred more patients to cardiology departments and fewer patients to the ER than general practitioners or the SAMU. Conclusion This study described the French healthcare system pathways before, during and after hospitalization AHF. AHF clinic network should be developed to provide adequate care for all HF patients and create awareness regarding AHF symptoms.

International audience; Dynamics with an orientational degree of freedom are fundamental in biological events. Probes with polarized luminescence enable a determination of the orientation. Lanthanide-doped nanocrystals can provide more precise analysis than quantum dots due to the non-photoblinking/bleaching nature and the multiple line-shaped emission. However, the intrinsic polarization property of the original nanocrystals often deteriorates in complex physiological environments, because the colloidal stability easily breaks and the probes aggregate in the media with abundant salts and macromolecules. Engineering the surface chemistry of the probes is thus essential to be compatible with biosystems, which has remained a challenging task that should be exclusively addressed for each specific probe. Here, we demonstrate a facile and efficient surface functionalization of lanthanide-doped nanorods by zwitterionic block copolymers. Due to the steric interaction and the intrinsic zwitterionic nature of the polymers, high colloidal stability of the zwitterionic nanorod suspension is achieved over wide ranges of pH and concentration of salts, even giving rise to the lyotropic liquid crystalline behavior of the nanorods in physiological media. The shear-aligned ability is shown to be unaltered by the coated polymers and thus the strongly polarized emission of Eu 3+ is preserved. Besides, biological experiments reveal good biocompatibility of the zwitterionic nanorods with negligible non-specific binding. This study is a stepping stone for the use of the nanorods as orientation probes in biofluids and validates the strategy of coupling zwitterions to lanthanide-doped nanocrystals for various bio-applications.

Foams and bubbles formed in liquid mixtures have lifetimes longer by several orders of magnitude than in pure liquids of similar viscosities. We have shown recently that this effect results from slight differences in molecular concentrations between bulk and surfaces, which give rise to a thickness-dependent surface tension of liquid films. We present a quantitative description of the enhanced stability of liquid films in binary mixtures, based on experimental data and theoretical analysis. Experiments were performed with mixtures of different natures and compositions: foams of stationary heights were obtained by continuous injection of gas, on one hand, and single bubbles were swollen under the surface of a liquid bath, on the other hand. Remarkably, the lifetimes measured in both experiments exhibit the same variations with mixture composition, and follow a power law with the microscopic length that characterises the amplitude of the thickness-dependent surface tension. In addition, the lifetimes vary with the squared film thicknesses at the onset of bursting. We suggest that two stages occur between the birth of liquid films and their rupture. We show how the thickness-dependent surface tension allows an equilibrium shape to be reached at the end of a first stretching stage. We give an analytical description of this shape, which is fully consistent with experimental findings. We suggest a possible mechanism for final rupture of the film, and discuss it in light of existing theoretical predictions. Finally, we compare the properties of liquid mixtures and surfactant solutions, and in particular their surface rheology.

Perpendicular shape anisotropy (PSA) and double magnetic tunnel junctions (DMTJ) offer practical solutions to downscale spin-transfer-torque Magnetic Random-Access Memory (STT-MRAM) beyond 20 nm technology nodes, whilst retaining their thermal stability and reducing critical currents applied. However, as these modern devices become smaller and three-dimensionally (3D) complex, our understanding of their functional magnetic behavior is often indirect, relying on magnetoresistance measurements and micromagnetic modelling. In this paper, we review recent work that was performed on these structures using a range of advanced electron microscopy techniques, focusing on aspects specific to the 3D and nanoscale nature of such elements. We present the methodology for the systematic transfer of individual SST-MRAM nano-pillars from large-scale arrays to image their magnetic configurations directly using off-axis electron holography. We show that improved phase sensitivity through stacking of electron holograms can be used to image subtle variations in DMTJs and the thermal stability of < 20 nm PSA-STT-MRAM nano-pillars during in-situ heating. The experimental practicalities, benefits and limits of using electron holography for analysis of MRAM devices are discussed, unlocking practical pathways for direct imaging of the functional magnetic performance of these systems with high spatial resolution and sensitivity., 22 pages, 7 figures

Food supply has been a constant source of concern for mankind. In the present context, with food security a priority of European and national policies, an analysis of pig farming in a representative NUTS2 administrative level of Romania that emphasizes the proportion of households raising at least one pig and the main factors influencing farmers to adopt or give up swine breeding could allow a much clearer understanding of this phenomenon that lies at the border between cultural tradition and socio-economic necessity. This study uses mixed methods that complement each another to help reveal this complex phenomenon in the analyzed territory. Cluster analysis shows the concentration of swine breeding and maps its spread in terms of both subsistence and larger farms, and qualitative interviews prove the motivation of farmers to continue in this occupation. As a primary result, the study visualizes the spatial distribution of pig farming in the rural environment of Vâlcea county, Romania, from a diachronic perspective in the post-communist period. It also reveals areas of differing concentrations of both very small-sized farms, which prioritize meeting their own food needs, and larger farms, which prioritize commercial production to supplement their revenue streams. Both categories, but particularly the latter, are of particular interest in a period in which the socio-economic environment after 1990—marked by economic restructuring, unemployment, population migration, the economic crisis of 2008–2010, the pandemic of 2020–2021, and the most recent energy crisis—periodically highlights the importance of rural areas in ensuring food security and sufficiency at both the local and regional levels.

Resume A l’ere du photo depistage, une actualisation des recommandations sur les methodes de depistage visuel chez l’enfant devenait necessaire. Nous exposons dans cet article les recommandations etablies suite au travail d’un groupe d’experts de l’AFSOP en fevrier 2019. Les enfants a risque de developper une amblyopie organique precoce doivent beneficier d’un examen ophtalmologique au cours du premier mois de vie. Les enfants a risque de developper une amblyopie fonctionnelle doivent beneficier d’un examen ophtalmologique avec mesure de la refraction sous cycloplegie entre l’âge de 12 et 15 mois. A tout âge, un enfant presentant des signes d’appel de pathologie oculaire ou des signes fonctionnels doit beneficier d’un examen ophtalmologique dans un delai rapide. Pour les enfants ne presentant ni facteur de risque ni signe d’appel, un examen de depistage systematique doit etre realise par un orthoptiste entre l’âge de 3 et 4 ans. Cet examen doit comprendre une mesure de l’acuite visuelle, un test a l’ecran et une mesure de la refraction par appareil de photo depistage. L’enfant est adresse a l’ophtalmologiste uniquement en cas d’anomalie a l’examen de depistage, selon les criteres suivants : acuite visuelle +2,5 D pour la sphere, > 1,5 D pour l’astigmatisme et > 1 D d’anisometropie. Enfin, une mise au point sur les normes refractives de l’enfant en fonction de l’âge et les conditions d’utilisation des appareils de photo depistage est egalement realisee.
