Hydroxy-terminated polyoxymethylene-\(\it co\)-polyoxyalkylene multi-block telechels were obtained by a new methodology that allows for the formal substituting of ether units in polyether polyols with oxymethylene moieties. An interesting feature is that, unlike carbonate groups in polycar-bonate and polyethercarbonate polyols, homopolymer blocks of polyoxymethylene moieties can be formed. The regular nature of polyoxymethylene blocks imparts a certain crystallinity to the polymer that can give rise to new properties of polyurethanes derived from such telechels. The synthesis, reaction sequence and kinetics of the formation of oligomeric hydroxy-terminated mul-ti-block telechel polyoxymethylene moieties are discussed in this paper and the preparation of a polyurethane material is demonstrated.

The synthesis, characterization, and catalytic properties of bimetallic cobalt‐rhodium nanoparticles of defined Co:Rh ratios immobilized in an imidazolium‐based supported ionic liquid phase (Co$_x$Rh$_{100−x}$@SILP) are described. Following an organometallic approach, precise control of the Co:Rh ratios is accomplished. Electron microscopy and X‐ray absorption spectroscopy confirm the formation of small, well‐dispersed, and homogeneously alloyed zero‐valent bimetallic nanoparticles in all investigated materials. Benzylideneacetone and various bicyclic heteroaromatics are used as chemical probes to investigate the hydrogenation performances of the Co$_x$Rh$_{100−x}$@SILP materials. The Co:Rh ratio of the nanoparticles is found to have a critical influence on observed activity and selectivity, with clear synergistic effects arising from the combination of the noble metal and its 3d congener. In particular, the ability of Co$_x$Rh$_{100−x}$@SILP catalysts to hydrogenate 6‐membered aromatic rings is found to experience a remarkable sharp switch in a narrow composition range between Co$_{25}$Rh$_{75}$ (full ring hydrogenation) and Co$_{30}$Rh$_{70}$ (no ring hydrogenation).

Die Katalyse ist ein sehr komplexes und interdisziplinäres wissenschaftliches Gebiet, das die effiziente Herstellung einer Vielzahl von Produkten für verschiedene Branchen und in unterschiedlichen Produktionsgrößen ermöglicht. Somit ist die Katalyse eine der Schlüsseltechnologien zur Bewältigung wesentlicher Herausforderungen wie einer nachhaltigen Energieversorgung oder des Klimawandels. Das Datenmanagement in der Katalyse ist derzeit überwiegend auf institutioneller oder Arbeitsgruppenebene organisiert und basiert auf lokalen Konventionen. Übergreifende Repositorien und Standards, wie Daten inklusive Metadaten gespeichert werden sollen, existieren nur in rudimentärer Form. Um den höchstmöglichen Mehrwert aus der Katalyseforschung zu generieren, ist ein grundlegender Wandel in der Katalyseforschung und den katalyseverwandten Wissenschaften wie Chemieingenieurwesen und Verfahrenstechnik erforderlich. Die verschiedenen Disziplinen der Katalyse im Hinblick auf das Datenmanagement zusammenzuführen, ist die zentrale Herausforderung. Aus all diesen Notwendigkeiten heraus wurde im Rahmen der Initiative zur Nationalen Forschungsdateninfrastruktur (NFDI) das NFDI4Cat-Konsortium gegründet. Als eines von derzeit neun geförderten Konsortien konzentriert sich NFDI4Cat auf die Wissenschaften rund um die Katalyse. Dieser Artikel beschreibt die Motivation der Gründungsmitglieder für dieses im Oktober 2020 gestartete Konsortium und wie die Ziele in Bezug auf die Fachcommunity, die technische Infrastruktur und insbesondere das Forschungsdatenmanagement erreicht werden sollen. Darüber hinaus eröffnet die dynamische Entwicklung moderner Technologien zur Erfassung, Bereitstellung und zur Analyse großer Datenmengen neue Möglichkeiten für wissenschaftlichen Fortschritt in den Einzeldisziplinen und insbesondere an deren Nahtstellen.

Recently the Institute of Archaeology (Dep. of Pre- and Protohistory) of the University of Innsbruck has undertaken excavation work in the Kleinwalsertal (Vorarlberg). Actually all sites and finds belong to the Mesolithic period. The lithic artefacts are made to a large extend from a red and green radiolarite which has been mined in the very close surroundings. Finds of corresponding raw material in the river gravel of the valley led to the primary layers on precipitous slopes in an altitude of 1600 meters. This place can therefore be defined as the oldest and highest mining site in the Alps. From the actual explorations we can deduce that the so called fresh raw material was stroken off in form of steps. In 2007 a mining tool corresponding to a stone-hammer could be found. The raw-material is of good quality and the localized rich natural deposits in this area permits a kind of small supplying center for the western region of Austrian Alps in the Mesolithic age. Other studies were conducted in the Lechtaler Alps and in the Rofan Mountains in the upper and respectively in the lower Inn Valley of the Tyrol. There Silex resources appear in great quantities so that prehistoric mining is to be expected. Further exploration work is done in the Tuxer Alps where big quartz clefts show traces of prehistoric extractions of rock-crystal. Les travaux de ces dernières décennies ont révélé ques les chasseurs-cueilleurs de l’époque postglaciaire avaient occupé de manière intensive toute la région des Alpes, que ce soit dans les vallées, en moyenne altitude ou vers les sommets. Pour fabriquer leurs outils en pierre, ils puisaient alors dans les différents types de chert. Les outils de meilleure qualité parcouraient souvent de longues distances avec leur propriétaire. Mais où trouver des mines où extraire ces précieux matériaux ? Contrairement aux excavations néolithiques que l’on retrouve dans toutes les Alpes, il n’y a pratiquement pas de traces datant du Mésolithique dans cette région des Alpes autrichiennes. Les travaux récents conduisent à s’intéresser aux zones calcaires du Tyrol et du Vorarlberg. L’institut d’archéologie (département de pré- et protohistoire) de l’Université d’Innsbruck vient de commencer une campagne de fouilles dans le Kleinwalsertal (Vorarlberg). Tous les sites et les objets trouvés remontent de fait à la période mésolithique. Les artefacts lithiques sont pour la plupart fabriqués à partir d’une radiolarite rouge et verte, extraite dans des mines voisines. Les matériaux bruts correspondants trouvés dans le gravier de rivière de la vallée nous ont conduits aux couches primaires présentes sur les pentes escarpées, à 1 600 m d’altitude. Un outil de mineur (maillet en pierre) a été mis au jour sur place en 2007, ce qui pourrait permettre de conclure à la présence, à l’époque Mésolithique, d’un petit centre d’approvisionnement pour la partie occidentale des Alpes autrichiennes. D’autres études ont été effectuées dans les Alpes du Lechtal ainsi que dans les Montagnes du Rofan, se situant dans la vallée supérieure et inférieure de l’Inn au Tyrol. Dans ces régions, des affleurements de silex sont fréquents, une exploitation préhistorique est très probable. D’autres recherches ont lieu dans les Alpes de Tux, où des failles alpines avec présence de cristal de roche démontrent aussi l’évidence d’une exploitation préhistorique.

AUFWIND (A lgenproduktion und U mwandlung in F lugzeugtreibstoffe: WI rtschaftlichkeit, N achhaltigkeit, D emonstration) was a German, governmental funded approach to investigate the feasibility of bio - jet fuel from algae. It originated in 2010, was finally granted in 2013 and then running until the end of 2016. Aim of AUFWIND was to go beyond the laboratory scale and test the “status quo” of microalgae cultivation and processing, on a scale to over 1500m², about two orders of magnitude larger. Therefore, a process chain from cultivation over processing to refining was built and established on this scale. Although a further commercial upscale of algae for fuel production seems unlikely in short-term not only in Germany -bottlenecks along the process chain have been identified and will be addressed in the next years. Additionally, the consortium is convinced that the topic will be revisited in the future due to technology advances. Also the increased interest in added-value process pathways from microalgae will contribute to facilitate their bio-energy viability in mid- to long term. Accordingly, our research results were collected and published in one document to serve as a public, solid foundation for future research: The attached report is structured in 2 parts. The first part (A – Projektübersicht: p. A-4 to p. A-20) gives an overlook, a summary and an outlook, sorted by topics (workpackages - Arbeitspaket): Administration (AP1), Cultivation (AP2), Extraction and cell disruption (AP3), Processing and refining of the extract (AP4), Utilization of side streams and remainders (AP5) and drawing of balances (AP6). In the second part (B – detaillierte Abschlussberichte), the results are structured by contributions of the individual partners (Teilvorhaben = TV). Each partner is involved in at least one work package; an overview is given on p. A-4 and p. A-5. AUFWIND (A lgenproduktion und U mwandlung in F lugzeugtreibstoffe: WI rtschaftlichkeit, N achhaltigkeit, D emonstration) war eine Machbarkeitsstudie zur Produktion von Bio-Kerosin aus Algen und wurde maßgeblich vom Bundesministerium für Landwirtschaft finanziert. Die Vorbereitungen starteten 2010; 2013 wurde das Projekt bewilligt und lief von Mitte 2013 bis Ende 2016. Ziel des Projektes war es, den Labormaßstab hinter sich zu lassen und den „Status quo“ der Kerosinerzeugung aus Algen im Pilotmaßstab auf 1500m² zu testen. Dazu wurde eine Prozesskette von Kultivierung im PBR über die Downstream-Behandlung bis hin zur Veredelung in der Raffinerie aufgebaut und getestet. Auch wenn eine weitere kommerzielle Hoch-Skalierung von Algen zur Treibstoffproduktion in naher Zukunft nicht nur in Deutschland unwahrscheinlich ist, wurden entscheidende Engpässe in der Prozesskette identifiziert und können in den kommenden Jahren bearbeitet werden. Des Weiteren ist das Konsortium überzeugt, dass Algentreibstoff auch in Zukunft wieder interessant wird. Das steigende Interesse an Wertstoffprozessen aus Mikroalgen und die begleitende technische Weiterentwicklung werden zukünftig auch zur Wirtschaftlichkeit des Bioenergieaspektes beitragen. Deswegen haben wir die Ergebnisse an einem Ort gesammelt und möchten sie dem interessierten Leser öffentlich zur Verfügung stellen: Der Report ist in zwei Abschnitte geteilt, Teil A (A – Projektübersicht: Seite A-6 bis Seite A-20) gibt ein Überblick, eine Zusammenfassung und einen Ausblick sortiert nach Forschungsthemen (Arbeitspakete): Administration (AP1), Kultivierung (AP2), Extraktion und Zellaufschluss (AP3), Verarbeitung und Raffinierung des Extrakts (AP4), Nutzung von Reststoffen (AP5) sowie Bilanzierung (AP6). This report provides perspectives on CO2 utilisation from a variety of angles: interviews with scientists, essays on business, environment and social impact, as well as stories from CO2-utilising companies. While the authors’ views differ on whether and how CO2 utilisation could be done, all agree that large-scale CO2 utilisation would have a significant impact: It could not only change the way fossil resources and renewable energies are used, but CO2 utilisation could even lead to market changes in chemicals, fuels and materials and to new value chains. Such a fundamental societal change requires favourable preconditions in the four fields of technology, market, societal impact and policy. The future impact of CO2 utilisation remains to be decided. Whether utilisation markets will be niche or large-scale is debated and dependent on the right requirements.

The hydrogenation of CO2 to methanol using a recyclable molecular organometallic catalyst in the absence of an alcohol additive is demonstrated for the first time., The hydrogenation of CO2 to methanol can be achieved using a single molecular organometallic catalyst. Whereas homogeneous catalysts were previously believed to allow the hydrogenation only via formate esters as stable intermediates, the present mechanistic study demonstrates that the multistep transformation can occur directly on the Ru–Triphos (Triphos = 1,1,1-tris(diphenylphosphinomethyl)ethane) centre. The cationic formate complex [(Triphos)Ru(η2-O2CH)(S)]+ (S = solvent) was identified as the key intermediate, leading to the synthesis of the analogous acetate complex as a robust and stable precursor for the catalytic transformation. A detailed mechanistic study using DFT calculations shows that a sequential series of hydride transfer and protonolysis steps can account for the transformation of CO2via formate/formic acid to hydroxymethanolate/formaldehyde and finally methanolate/methanol within the coordination sphere of a single Ru–Triphos-fragment. All experimental results of the systematic parameter optimisation are fully consistent with this mechanistic picture. Based on these findings, a biphasic system consisting of H2O and 2-MTHF was developed, in which the active cationic Ru-complex resides in the organic phase for recycling and methanol is extracted with the aqueous phase.

International audience; The partial replacement of ruthenium by iron (“dilution”) provided enhanced catalytic activities and selectivities for bimetallic iron–ruthenium nanoparticles immobilized on a supported ionic liquid phase (FeRuNPs@SILP). An organometallic synthetic approach to the preparation of FeRuNPs@SILP allowed for a controlled and flexible incorporation of Fe into bimetallic FeRu NPs. The hydrogenation of substituted aromatic substrates using bimetallic FeRuNPs@SILP showed high catalytic activities and selectivities for the reduction of a variety of unsaturated moieties without saturation of the aromatic ring. The formation of a bimetallic phase not only leads to an enhanced differentiation of the hydrogenation selectivity, but even reversed the order of functional group hydrogenation in certain cases. In particular, bimetallic FeRuNPs@SILP (Fe:Ru = 25:75) were found to exhibit accelerated reaction rates for C═O hydrogenation within furan-based substrates which were >4 times faster than monometallic RuNPs@SILP. Thus, the controlled incorporation of the non-noble metal into the bimetallic phase provided novel catalytic properties that could not be obtained using either of the monometallic catalysts.

1. Motivation und Hintergrund: Die Emission von anthropogen erzeugtem Kohlendioxid (CO$_{2}$) beträgt derzeit weltweit ca. 29 Mrd. t/a. Die derzeitige Nutzung von CO$_{2}$ als Industriegas liegt demgegenüber bei ca. 20 Mio. t/a, als Chemierohstoff etwa bei 110 Mio. t/a. Beide Nutzungsbereiche leisten damit einen willkommenen, jedoch begrenzten Beitrag zur Reduktion der Kohlendioxidemission. Das Interesse an der Nutzung von Kohlendioxid (Carbon Capture and Re-use: CCR) liegt vielmehr darin begründet, dass mit CO$_{2}$ ein potenzieller Wertstoff mit einem interessanten Anwendungsprofil und Wertschöpfungspotenzial für die chemische Industrie vorliegt, dessen wirtschaftliche Verwendung sich auch positiv auf die Bewertung von Strategien zur Reduktion von CO$_{2}$- Emissionen mittels Abscheidung, Transport und Speicherung von CO$_{2}$ (CCS) auswirken kann. The stepwise catalytic reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) to formic acid, formaldehyde, and methanol opens non-fossil pathways to important platform chemicals. The present article aims at identifying molecular control parameters to steer the selectivity to the three distinct reduction levels using organometallic catalysts of earth-abundant first-row metals. A linear scaling relationship was developed to map the intrinsic reactivity of 3d transition metal pincer complexes to their activity and selectivity in CO2 hydrosilylation. The hydride affinity of the catalysts was used as a descriptor to predict activity/selectivity trends in a composite volcano picture, and the outstanding properties of cobalt complexes bearing bis(phosphino)triazine PNP-type pincer ligands to reach the three reduction levels selectively under different reaction conditions could thus be rationalized. The implications of the composite volcano picture were successfully experimentally validated with selected catalysts, and the challenging intermediate level of formaldehyde could be accessed in over 80% yield with the cobalt complex 6. The results underpin the potential of tandem computational-experimental approaches to propel catalyst design for CO2-based chemical transformations.

The invention relates to methods for separating mixtures of branched and linear aldehydes, by the selective extraction of branched aldehyde isomers from mixtures containing their corresponding linear isomers. The invention is characterised in that compressed carbon dioxide (CO2) is used as an extraction agent.

The invention relates to the production of epoxy resins by oxidizing olefins with molecular oxygen using an aldehyde additive. The inventive method is characterized by carrying out the oxidation in compressed carbonic acid that is oxidation-stable, that reduces the explosion hazard and that is toxicologically and ecologically safe vis-à-vis many conventional organic solvents.
