Prediction of summer precipitation in north China (NCP) has long been a challenge partly because its low correlation with previous sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies (SSTA) limits the application of SST in NCP prediction. This study aims to extract optimal predictors of NCP from the SST field using an objective method—empirically optimal screening (EOS). It finds that the optimal precursory signal of NCP lies in the change of SSTA from winter to spring rather than the SSTA itself. This study identifies two optimal precursory signs predicting a positive (negative) NCP anomaly: the anomalous SST cooling (warming) from winter to spring in the coastal area of Somalia and Peru. Interestingly, these two presummer conditions have considerable independence, but they lead to a similar summer development of La Niña (El Niño). In summer, the tropical precipitation anomaly pattern associated with La Niña (El Niño) development excites a meridional wave train over the western Pacific and the circumglobal teleconnection in the Northern Hemisphere. Both of the anomalous wave trains show abnormal high (low) pressure over northeast Asia, which induces the south (north) wind anomalies over north China and produces abundant (deficient) precipitation there. These results highlight the importance of the SST evolution from winter to spring, break through the limitation of SST application in NCP prediction, and thus bring a prospect of improving NCP forecast skills. Significance Statement Sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies are most used as predictors in climate prediction. However, the forecast of summer precipitation in north China is limited by its low correlation with prior SST anomalies. In this paper, we find that the optimal precursory signal of north China precipitation (NCP) is not the SST anomaly itself, but the changes of SST anomalies from winter to spring in the coastal area of Somalia and Peru. These two precursory signals are almost independent yet indicate similar summer situations leading to NCP anomaly. These results highlight the importance of the dynamic evolution of sea surface temperature in improving the forecast skill of NCP.

Purpose: The anti-tumor activity of nab-paclitaxel followed by epirubicin/cyclophosphamide (EC) as neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) in Asian patients remains unclear, particularly in the aggressive subtype triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC). This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of this NAC regimen in TNBC. Methods: In this Simon’s two-stage, phase II study, treatment-naïve patients with resectable unilateral primary invasive TNBC were enrolled. Eligible patients received nab-paclitaxel 125 mg/m2 weekly on day 1 for 12 weeks, followed by dose-dense EC (epirubicin 90 mg/m2; cyclophosphamide 600 mg/m2) on day 1 for four 2-week cycles. The primary endpoint was the total pathological complete response (tpCR, ypT0/is ypN0) rate. Secondary endpoints included breast pathological complete response (bpCR, ypT0/is) rate, objective response rate (ORR), the proportion of patients requiring breast-conserving surgery, and safety. Results: 55 eligible patients were enrolled and treated. After neoadjuvant therapy, tpCR and bpCR were respectively observed in 43.1% (95% CI, 29.3%-57.8%) and 49.0% (95% CI, 3)4.8%-63.4%) of 51 evaluable patients for pathological response evaluation. 44 had an ORR as their best response (80.0%; 95% CI, 67.0%-89.6%). No correlations between clinicopathological variables and pathological/clinical response were observed. Grade 3 or more AEs occurred in 63.6% of 55 patients. The most frequent AEs were alopecia. No treatment-related surgical delay or death occurred. Conclusions: Nab-paclitaxel followed by dose-dense EC as NAC demonstrates promising anti-tumor activity and acceptable tolerability for patients with TNBC. Purpose. This study investigated the correlation between corneal biomechanical parameters and the speed of myopia progression. Methods. This is a retrospective, multicenter study. Both Chinese and Caucasian children were involved. The follow-up time was at least 12 months. Ocular biometry data including the central corneal thickness (CCT), axial length (AL), corneal keratometry (K), anterior chamber depth (ACD), white-to-white (WTW) distance, and pupil size (PS) were measured. The age of onset, speed of progression of spherical equivalent (SE), and speed of AL elongation were calculated. Data were analyzed using the R programming language. Results. This study comprised 306 eyes of 153 myopic children. 122 children were Chinese, and 31 children were Caucasian. The myopia progression was faster in Chinese children than that in the Caucasian group in both SE progression speed and AL elongation speed. The CCT was negatively correlated with the SE speed of progression (correlation coefficient, R = −0.65, and p = 7.25 × 10 − 38 ) and AL speed (R = −0.47 and p = 1.62 × 10 − 18 ). CCT was positively correlated with the age of onset (R = 0.35 and p = 4.53 × 10 − 10 ). No significant correlation (R > 0.3 and p < 0.01 ) was found between other ocular biometries (K, ACD, WTW, and PS) and the onset and speed of the progression of myopia. The same trends were found in both Chinese and Caucasian children and in both the right eye and left eye. Conclusion. CCT was negatively correlated with myopia (SE) progression speed and AL elongation speed. Thin CCT may be associated with faster myopia progression.

Employees frequently have to use various media to complete multiple tasks at work, and depression has become a common problem influencing their mental health and work efficiency. We conducted a survey to investigate the relationship between the media multitasking and depression of 490 employees of a state-owned enterprise in China. The results showed that media multitasking was positively correlated with employee depression. Moreover, ego depletion significantly mediated the relationship between media multitasking and depression, and self-control moderated the relationship between ego depletion and depression. Greater self-control may help buffer the effect of ego depletion on depression. These results have theoretical and practical implications for improving employees' mental health during China's enterprise transformation process.

A point cloud is a set of data points in space. Point cloud registration is the process of aligning two or more 3D point clouds collected from different locations of the same scene. Registration enables point cloud data to be transformed into a common coordinate system, forming an integrated dataset representing the scene surveyed. In addition to those reliant on targets being placed in the scene before data capture, there are various registration methods available that are based on using only the point cloud data captured. Until recently, cloud-to-cloud registration methods have generally been centered upon the use of a coarse-to-fine optimization strategy. The challenges and limitations inherent in this process have shaped the development of point cloud registration and the associated software tools over the past three decades. Based on the success of deep learning methods applied to imagery data, attempts at applying these approaches to point cloud datasets have received much attention. This study reviews and comments on more recent developments in point cloud registration without using any targets and explores remaining issues, based on which recommendations on potential future studies in this topic are made.

International audience; Siberian forests are generally thought to have acted as an important carbon sink over recent decades, but exposure to severe droughts and fire disturbances may have impacted their carbon dynamics. Limited available forest inventories mean the carbon balance remains uncertain. Here we analyse annual live and dead above-ground carbon changes derived from low-frequency passive microwave observations from 2010 to 2019. We find that during this period, the carbon balance of Siberian forests was close to neutral, with the forests acting as a small carbon sink of +0.02+0.03+0.01 PgC yr−1. Carbon storage in dead wood increased, but this was largely offset by a decrease in live biomass. Substantial losses of live above-ground carbon are attributed to fire and drought, such as the widespread fires in northern Siberia in 2012 and extreme drought in eastern Siberia in 2015. These live above-ground carbon losses contrast with ‘greening’ trends seen in leaf area index over the same period, a decoupling explained by faster post-disturbance recovery of leaf area than live above-ground carbon. Our study highlights the vulnerability of large forest carbon stores in Siberia to climate-induced disturbances, challenging the persistence of the carbon sink in this region of the globe.

Bioadhesives are widely used in a variety of medical settings due to their ease of use and efficient wound closure and repair. However, achieving both strong adhesion and removability/reusability is highly needed but challenging. Here, we reported an injectable mesoporous bioactive glass nanoparticle (MBGN)-incorporated biopolymer hydrogel bioadhesive that demonstrates a strong adhesion strength (up to 107.55 kPa) at physiological temperatures that is also removable and reusable. The incorporation of MBGNs in the biopolymer hydrogel significantly enhances the tissue adhesive strength due to an increased cohesive and adhesive property compared to the hydrogel adhesive alone. The detachment of bioadhesive results from temperature-induced weakening of interfacial adhesive strength. Moreover, the bioadhesive displays injectability, self-healing, and excellent biocompatibility. We demonstrate potential applications of the bioadhesive in vitro, ex vivo, and in vivo for hemostasis and intestinal leakage closure and accelerated skin wound healing compared to surgical wound closures. This work provides a novel design of strong and removable bioadhesives.

The influence mechanism of lignite thermal upgrading on moisture re-adsorption was investigated using analytical techniques such as differential thermal analysis–thermogravimetry, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The results showed that the moisture content of lignite decreased from 44.78 to 25.07% through the drying process. After the moisture in the lignite and the air had reached a dynamic equilibrium, the moisture content of the lignite was 25.75 wt.%. The characteristic functional groups of lignite include hydroxyl, methylene, methyl, carbonyl, carboxyl and ether oxygen. The adsorption distances of the five adsorption sites of carboxyl, phenolic hydroxyl, alcoholic hydroxyl, carbonyl and ether bond to water molecules were 2.081, 2.933, 1.905, 1.860 and 1.881 Å, respectively. The order of the adsorption strength of water molecules on the characteristic functional groups was carbonyl > phenolic hydroxyl > ether oxygen > alcoholic hydroxyl > carboxyl. During the upgrading by drying process, the characteristic functional groups that were prone to hydrogen bonds of water molecules partially decomposed. The reduction of pores and the partial decomposition of hydrophilic functional groups after upgrading in the lignite structure weakened the adsorption capacity of lignite to water molecules. Therefore, the re-absorption of water molecules by lignite was reduced.

Composite solid-state electrolyte (CSSE) with integrated strengths avoids the weaknesses of organic and inorganic electrolytes, and thus become a better choice for all-solid-state lithium battery (ASSLB). However, the poor dispersion of inorganic fillers and the organic/inorganic nature difference leads to their interface incompatibility, which greatly destroys the performance of CSSE and ASSLB. Herein, silane coupling agent (SCA) aminopropyl triethoxysilane (ATS) is introduced to tailor the organic/inorganic interfaces in CSSE by the common chemical bridging effect of SCA and the special amino effect (hydrogen bond and lone pair electron effects). Carbon materials have aroused wide attention in the field of electromagnetic wave absorption because of their advantages of good electrical conductivity, low density and adjustable structure. To obtain enhanced performance of electromagnetic wave absorption, the elaborate design of structures for carbon materials has become essential. In this work, the nitrogen-doped and large diameter carbon nanotubes modified with cobalt nanoparticles (M-Co/C-CNTs) composites were successfully prepared by adsorption and carbonization of the gases generated by organic matter pyrolysis. It is concluded that the enhanced conduction loss and polarization loss are attributed to the interfacial electronic engineering induced by the sensibly loaded cobalt nanoparticles and nitrogen doping. As a result, the samples achieved a broad effective absorption bandwidth of 4.56 GHz, and a strong reflection loss of -52.2 dB with a thin thickness of 2.1 mm. This work proposes a tailored way to fabricate the large diameter carbon nanotube composites and enhance electromagnetic wave absorption through novel structural modulation.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) remains an uncontained, worldwide pandemic. While battling the disease in China, the Chinese government has actively promoted the use of traditional Chinese medicine, and many studies have been conducted to determine the efficacy of traditional Chinese medicine for treating COVID-19. The present review discusses the effectiveness and safety of traditional Chinese medicine in curing COVID-19 and provides clinical evidence from all confirmed cases in China. Applications of traditional Chinese medicine and specific recipes for treating other viral infections, such as those caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus and influenza A viruses (including H1N1), are also discussed. Studies have reported that traditional Chinese medicine treatment plays a significant role in improving clinical symptoms. Therefore, further investigation may be of high translational value in revealing novel targeted therapies for COVID-19.

Ketogenic medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs) with profound health benefits are commonly found in dairy products, palm kernel oil and coconut oil. We hypothesize that magnesium (Mg) supplementation leads to enhanced gut microbial production of MCFAs and, in turn, increased circulating MCFAs levels.We tested this hypothesis in the Personalized Prevention of Colorectal Cancer Trial (PPCCT) (NCT01105169), a double-blind 2 × 2 factorial randomized controlled trial enrolling 240 participants. Six 24-h dietary recalls were performed for all participants at the baseline and during the intervention period. Based on the baseline 24-h dietary recalls, the Mg treatment used a personalized dose of Mg supplementation that would reduce the calcium (Ca): Mg intake ratio to around 2.3. We measured plasma MCFAs, sugars, ketone bodies and tricarboxylic acid cycle (TCA cycle) metabolites using the Metabolon's global Precision Metabolomics™ LC-MS platform. Whole-genome shotgun metagenomics (WGS) sequencing was performed to assess microbiota in stool samples, rectal swabs, and rectal biopsies.Personalized Mg treatment (mean dose 205.58 mg/day with a range from 77.25 to 389.55 mg/day) significantly increased the plasma levels of C7:0, C8:0, and combined C7:0 and C8:0 by 18.45%, 25.28%, and 24.20%, respectively, compared to 14.15%, 10.12%, and 12.62% decreases in the placebo arm. The effects remain significant after adjusting for age, sex, race and baseline level (P = 0.0126, P = 0.0162, and P = 0.0031, respectively) and FDR correction at 0.05 (q = 0.0324 for both C7:0 and C8:0). Mg treatment significantly reduced the plasma level of sucrose compared to the placebo arm (P = 0.0036 for multivariable-adjusted and P = 0.0216 for additional FDR correction model) whereas alterations in daily intakes of sucrose, fructose, glucose, maltose and C8:0 from baseline to the end of trial did not differ between two arms. Mediation analysis showed that combined C7:0 and C8:0 partially mediated the effects of Mg treatment on total and individual ketone bodies (P for indirect effect = 0.0045, 0.0043, and 0.03, respectively). The changes in plasma levels of C7:0 and C8:0 were significantly and positively correlated with the alterations in stool microbiome α diversity (r = 0.51, p = 0.0023 and r = 0.34, p = 0.0497, respectively) as well as in stool abundance for the signatures of MCFAs-related microbiota with acyl-ACP thioesterase gene producing C7:0 (r = 0.46, p = 0.0067) and C8:0 (r = 0.49, p = 0.003), respectively, following Mg treatment.Optimizing Ca:Mg intake ratios to around 2.3 through 12-week personalized Mg supplementation leads to increased circulating levels of MCFAs (i.e. C7:0 and C8:0), which is attributed to enhanced production from gut microbial fermentation and, maybe, sucrose consumption.

Background: Little is known about the long-term risks of stroke and ischemic heart disease (IHD) in women who had a hysterectomy alone (HA) or with bilateral oophorectomy (HBO) for benign diseases, particularly in China where the burden of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) is high. We assessed mean levels of cardiovascular risk factors and relative risks of stroke and IHD in Chinese women who had a HA or HBO. Methods: A total of 302 510 women, aged 30 to 79 years were enrolled in the China Kadoorie Biobank from 2004 to 2008 and followed up for a mean of 9.8 years. The analysis involved premenopausal women without prior cardiovascular disease or cancer at enrollment. We calculated adjusted hazard ratios for incident cases of CVD and their pathological types (ischemic stroke, hemorrhagic stroke, and IHD) after HA and HBO. Analyses were stratified by age and region and adjusted for levels of education, household income, smoking status, alcohol consumption, physical activity, body mass index, systolic blood pressure, diabetes, self-reported health, and number of pregnancies. Results: Among 282 722 eligible women, 8478 had HA, and 1360 had HBO. Women who had HA had 9% higher risk of CVD after HA (hazard ratio, 1.09 [95% CI, 1.06–1.12]) and 19% higher risk of CVD after HBO (1.19 [95% CI, 1.12–1.26]) compared with women who did not. Both HA and HBO were associated with higher risks of ischemic stroke and IHD but not with hemorrhagic stroke. The relative risks of CVD associated with HA and HBO were more extreme at younger age of surgery. Conclusions: Women who had either HA or HBO have higher risks of ischemic stroke and IHD, and these risks should be evaluated when discussing these interventions. Additional screening for risk factors for CVD should be considered in women following HA and HBO operations, especially if such operations are performed at younger age.

The etiology of chronic kidney disease of unclear etiology, also known as Mesoamerican nephropathy, remains unclear. We investigated potential etiologies for Mesoamerican nephropathy in an immigrant dialysis population.Migrants with Mesoamerican nephropathy kidney failure (Patients with Mesoamerican nephropathy and kidney failure were young agricultural workers, almost exclusively men; the majority were from Mexico and El Salvador; and they had prior exposures to agrochemicals, including paraquat (27%). After adjustment for age/sex, exposure to any agrochemical or paraquat was associated with Mesoamerican nephropathy kidney failure (odds ratio, 4.86; 95% confidence interval, 1.82 to 12.96;Exposure to agrochemicals is associated with Mesoamerican nephropathy, and chronic exposure of mice to paraquat, a prototypical oxidant, induced kidney failure similar to Mesoamerican nephropathy.
