This work focuses on the intensification of BrO3− (200 μg L−1) reduction by TiO2-assisted heterogeneous photocatalysis, using the NETmix mili-photoreactor illuminated by UVA light-emitting diodes (UVA-LEDs). The mili-photoreactor was assembled in two configurations: i) catalyst deposition on the channels and chambers of a back stainless steel slab (SSS) and ii) catalyst deposition on the front borosilicate glass slab (BGS), allowing the study of front-side (FSI) and back-side (BSI) illumination mechanisms, respectively. The BrO3− reduction rate in aqueous solution was assessed as a function of: i) pH; ii) dissolved oxygen (DO); iii) addition of formic acid (CH2O2) as a sacrificial agent (SA); iv) photocatalyst film thickness; v) illumination mechanism; vi) irradiation intensity; vii) temperature; and viii) water matrix. Higher BrO3− reduction rates were observed using the FSI mechanism and lower pH values. Nitrogen injection (to eliminate DO) did not significantly improve the reaction rate and the addition of CH2O2 had a negative effect at pH 6.5. Neither temperature nor irradiance increase showed a considerable improvement on the reduction rate. Moreover, TiO2 film remains stable for at least 13 consecutive reactions without significant catalyst leaching. The chemically pre-treated fresh water (FW) matrix negatively affected the reaction rate when compared with the synthetic water (SW), under the best operational conditions (SSS: pH = 5.5, 287 mg of TiO2, 25 °C, SA absence, [DO] = 232–263 μM). This was associated with the presence of both inorganic and organic matter at much higher concentrations than BrO3−. Notwithstanding, heterogeneous TiO2 photocatalysis, using the NETmix mili-photoreactor, was successfully applied to fresh water, achieving [BrO3−]

The current work focused on the sunlight-driven thermo-photocatalytic reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2), the primary greenhouse gas, by ethane (C2H6), the second most abundant element in shale gas, aiming at the generation of ethanol (EtOH), a renewable fuel. To promote this process, a hybrid catalyst was prepared and properly characterized, comprising of strontium titanate (SrTiO3) co-doped with ruthenium oxide (RuO2) and nickel oxide (NiO). The photocatalytic activity towards EtOH production was assessed in batch-mode and at gas-phase, under the influence of different conditions: (i) dopant loading, (ii) temperature, (iii) optical radiation wavelength, (vi) consecutive uses, and (v) electron scavenger addition. From the results here obtained, it was found that: (i) the functionalization of the SrTiO3 with RuO2 and NiO allows the visible light harvest and narrows the band gap energy (ca. 14–20%), (ii) the selectivity towards EtOH depends on the presence of Ni and irradiation, (iii) the catalyst photoresponse is mainly due to the visible photons, (iv) the photocatalyst loses &gt, 50% efficiency right after the 2nd use, (v) the reaction mechanism is based on the photogenerated electron-hole pair charge separation, and (vi) a maximum yield of 64 μmol EtOH gcat−1 was obtained after 45-min (85 μmol EtOH gcat−1 h−1) of simulated solar irradiation (1000 W m−2) at 200 °C, using 0.4 g L−1 of SrTiO3:RuO2:NiO (0.8 wt.% Ru) with [CO2]:[C2H6] and [Ru]:[Ni] molar ratios of 1:3 and 1:1, respectively. Notwithstanding, despite its exploratory nature, this study offers an alternative route to solar fuels’ synthesis from the underutilized C2H6 and CO2.

The production of biopolymers has been shown to be one of the most viable alternatives for the reduction of the use of conventional plastics. The oat hulls are a by-product with great ability to be incorporated into the production of biopolymers since it is a lignocellulosic compound. The lignin present in its composition can improve the strength of the material, however, it can also hamper its degradation. The aim of this study was to evaluate the degradation levels of composites produced from starch and polylactic acid with absence (T1) and presence of oat hulls (T2) through the Sturm test. In T2 it was a more uniform and smooth biopolymer. In addition, the use of oat hulls favored CO2 production, 8% more than T1. Although the loss of dry mass in T1 was 3% higher, it was possible to observe degradation in T2.

A micro-meso-structured reactor (NETmix) was used for the first time to promote photochemical UVC/H2O2 processes. The NETmix photoreactor consists of a network of chambers and channels, where the liquid flows, sealed with a quartz slab with high UVC transparency. Due to the small size of channels and chambers, the NETmix presents a uniform irradiance through the entire reactor depth, short molecular diffusion distances and large specific interfacial areas, maximizing the pollutant/oxidant contact. In this study, the NETmix photoreactor was evaluated for As(iii) oxidation to As(v) using a photochemical UVC/H2O2 system. The effect of the UVC lamp power (4, 6 or 11 W), the number of UVC lamps (2 or 3 lamps) and the UVC lamp layout (parallel or perpendicular to the flow direction) was evaluated, in order to ensure uniform irradiation of the entire reaction mixture. The optimum H2O2 concentration for each light distribution system was also evaluated. At the best configuration, 3 lamps of 11 W positioned parallel to the flow direction, total As(iii) oxidation ([As(iii)]0 = 1.33 × 10-2 mM) was achieved in 15 min with an absorbed photon flux density of 1.9 × 10-1 einstein per m3 per s. Significant differences were highlighted between the photon flux actually received in the photoreactor and the radiant power emitted by the lamp. A kinetic model able to represent the As(iii) oxidation employing UVC radiation and H2O2 in a micro-meso-structured reactor was presented. The photochemical space time yield (PSTY) values obtained for the micro-meso-structured reactor are higher than for conventional batch reactors, showing that the NETmix technology can be a good solution for application in photochemical processes.

Despite the proven efficiency of heterogeneous photocatalysis using immobilized catalysts, this process lacks integration with the industry due to limitations on mass and photon transfer. The current study aimed to go up against this scenario by applying for the first time a Kenics® static mixer as catalyst support for heterogeneous photocatalysis in tubular reactors. Stainless steel Kenics® static mixers coated with TiO2 or Fe2O3 photocatalyst were assembled in a borosilicate tube coupled to a compound parabolic collector (CPC) and applied to the degradation of the antibiotic oxytetracycline (OTC) in aqueous solution. The use of the Kenics® static mixer provided intense mixing even under laminar flow, and, beyond that, the use of sunlight and a CPC ensured that the entire photocatalyst surface area was receiving front side illumination. Fe2O3 catalyst showed superiority over TiO2 for OTC degradation, exhibiting a pseudo-first-order kinetic constant 79% higher. However, while no TiO2 leaching occurred, up to around 0.7 mg L−1 of total dissolved iron were leachated. Thus, both homogeneous and heterogeneous photo-Fenton reactions may have contributed to the higher OTC degradation by Fe2O3 photocatalysis. The effect of various parameters on the photocatalytic efficiency was assessed: (i) photocatalyst deposition technique, (ii) photocatalyst dosage, (iii) H2O2 concentration, and (iv) number of static mixing elements. Spray coating technique showed superiority over dip coating. OTC degradation was improved by using 50 mL of TiO2 suspension together with 77 mg L−1 of H2O2, and 75 mL of Fe2O3 suspension together with 154 mg L−1 of H2O2. The increase of the number of Kenics® static mixing elements from two to six did not improve the OTC degradation rate. Furthermore, the reusability of both catalysts was proved.

Anaerobic digestion of crude glycerol from biodiesel production is a feasible way for methane production. However, crude glycerol (CG) contains impurities, such as long-chain fatty acids (LCFA) that can inhibit methanogenic microorganisms. Ultrasound promotes the hydrolysis of LCFA and deagglomerates the microorganisms in biological flocs. Furthermore, Aspergillus niger and Escherichia coli produce lipases capable of degrading LCFA. This study aims at improving the methane yield from anaerobic digestion by coupling with ultrasound or E. coli/A. niger biodegradation. The effect of the different treatments was first assessed in a perfectly mixed batch reactor (PMBR), using diluted CG at concentrations of 0.2%, 1.7%, and 3.2% (v/v). Later, the best conditions were replicated in an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor to simulate full- scale practical applications. Experiments in the PMBR showed that ultrasound or A. niger biodegradation steps improved methane yield up to 11% for 0.2% CG and 99% for 1.7% CG, respectively. CG biodegradation by E. coli inhibited the subsequent anaerobic digestion for all concentrations tested. Using a UASB digester, ultrasonic treatment of CG led to an average increase of 29% in methane production. The application of ultrasound led to a lower accumulation of propionic acid in the digested material and increased biogas production. On the other hand, an average 77% increase in methane production was achieved using a preliminary CG biodegradation step by A. niger, when operated at a loading rate of 2.9 kg COD m-3 day-1. Under these conditions, an energy gain of 0.48 kWh day-1, with the production of the 0.434 m3 CH4 kg-1 CODremoval and 0.573 m3 CH4 kg-1 VS, and a biogas quality of 73% in methane were obtained. The digested material was analyzed for the detection and quantification of added-value by-products in order to obtain a broad assessment of the CG valorization through anaerobic digestion. In some experiments, propionic and oxalic acid were detected. This study focuses on the kinetic modeling of As(III) oxidation by heterogeneous TiO2 photocatalysis, assisted by ultraviolet light emitting diodes, using a static mixer – NETmix reactor – in two different configurations: back-side illumination and front-side illumination. First, preliminary experimental assays were performed varying the load of TiO2-P25 and the incident radiation flux for each configuration, and the observed pseudo-first-order kinetic constants were obtained. A model was built based on a mechanistic reaction pathway for As(III) oxidation, taking into account the radiation absorption by the catalytic surface. Three kinetic parameters were estimated considering the solution of the material balance for the existing chemical species and the evaluation of the radiation field inside the reactor by solving the Radiative Transfer Equation. The incident radiation flux was determined at every point on the catalyst surface. It was concluded that the initial reaction rate per unit area is similar in both reactor configurations. However, when compared per unit volume, front-side illumination exhibits twice the reaction rate as the back-side illumination. Moreover, according to the obtained parameters, the front-side configuration showed higher As(V) adsorptivity when compared to the back-side. In addition, the dependence of the reaction rate upon the incident radiation level proved to be the same regardless of the illumination mechanism. Nevertheless, considering that the radiation field is not uniform, the complete expression of the dependence with the local incident radiation flux in the reaction rate equations must be used. The results obtained with the model predictions were contrasted with the experimental data regarding As(III) concentrations and showed a good agreement for both reactor configurations.

The application of electrocoagulation (EC) and electroflotation (EF) was investigated for the treatment of poultry slaughterhouse wastewater in a bench scale unit cell electrolyzer with different EC-to-EF ratios at current densities of 3, 9, and 15 mA cm−2. The EC-to-EF ratio was controlled by current reversal using aluminum and graphite electrodes. The electrochemical treatment showed satisfactory removal efficiencies for Al coagulant loads greater than 51.8 mg L−1. The 4/5 EC to EF ratio (69.1 mg L−1 Al and 32.2 NmL L−1 additional EF gas) and 3/5 (51.8 mg L−1 Al/64 NmL L−1 additional EF gas) presented the best results for the removal of COD (76–85%), color (93–99%), and turbidity (95–99%), with the additional benefit of reducing the electrode consumption and sludge disposal costs proportionally to the EC-to-EF ratio. The effects of the EC-to-EF ratio and the current density on efficiency of the electrochemical treatment for the removal of COD, apparent color, turbidity, TSS, TSD, and NH3-N were discussed in the light of the physicochemical and electrochemical processes underlying the removal mechanism for each parameter. In particular, the blow-off mechanism seems to play an important role in the NH3-N removal, whereas indirect electrooxidation mechanism accounts for a fraction of the soluble COD removal for the electrodes configuration used in the treatment.

As águas subterrâneas têm um papel relevante para o abastecimento humano. Na cidade de Curitiba-PR mais de 400.000 mil habitantes são abastecidos diariamente pelos sistemas aquíferos Cárstico (Karst), Cristalino e Guabirotuba. À medida que aumenta a demanda de água pela população, a necessidade de estudos que avaliem os processos de gestão e monitoramento da qualidade das águas subterrâneas ganham importância. O estudo teve como objetivo analisar a classificação química das águas subterrâneas de Curitiba-PR e calcular estimativas de potencialidade hidráulica. Foi realizado o levantamento de um do banco de dados de poços tubulares que exploram às águas subterrâneas na região de estudo disponibilizados pelo Sistema de Informação Geográfica de Águas Subterrâneas (SIAGAS), a fim de relacionar as características hidroquímicas dos diferentes aquíferos e seu contexto geológico regional. Para o estudo do balanço e classificação hidroquímica foi utilizado o software livre Qualigraf. O diagrama Piper e diagramas de Stiff evidenciou predominância de águas Bicarbonatadas Cálcicas ou Magnesianas e Bicarbonatadas Sódicas, resultados esses coerentes com as características geológicas da região estudada. Alguns parâmetros como fluoreto, nitrato e ferro foram encontrados em níveis acima dos permitidos pela legislação, podendo indicar contaminação antrópica. Já a vazão específica calculada ficou, predominantemente, entre 0,1 a 0,5 m3 /h/m.

The accelerated growth of the population brings with it an increase in the generation of agro-industrial effluents. The inadequate discharge of these effluents significantly affects the quality of water resources. In this way, it becomes important to invest in treatment processes for agro-industrial effluents, particularly low-cost ones. In this context, the present study includes the design and construction of an UASB reactor and optimization of the anaerobic digestion treatment of the raw effluent from sweet chestnut production in the agro-industrial company Sortegel. The efficiency of the system was evaluated through the determination / monitoring of oxygen chemical oxygen demand (COD), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5), total suspended solids (TSS), biogas production rate and quality (% methane). The reactor was fed for 25 weeks and operated under mesophilic conditions (temperature 30-40 °C). Different values were tested for the hydraulic retention time (HRT) and volumetric flow rate (VF): 0.66 days (VF=1509 L.m-3.d-1); 1.33 days (VF=755 L.m-3.d-1); 2.41 d days (VF=415 L.m-3.d-1). The average COD removal efficiency reached values of 69%, 82% and 75%, respectively, and simultaneously the associated BOD5 removal efficiency was 84%, 91% and 70%. As regards TSS, removal values were 78%, 94% and 63%. In addition, high methane production rates were obtained, between 2500 and 4800 L CH4.kg-1 COD removed d-1. For all the hydraulic retention times tested, high concentrations of methane in the biogas were recorded: 66-75%, 70% and 75% for HRT of 0.66, 1.33 and 2.41 days, respectively. info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion

World production and trade of fruits generate losses in the harvest, post-harvest, handling, distribution and consumption phases, corresponding to 6.8% of total production. These residues present high potential as a substrate for the anaerobic digestion process and biogas generation. Thus, the energy valuation of the agro-industrial residues of kiwi production was evaluated by anaerobic digestion, aiming at optimizing the biogas production and its quality. Ten assays were carried out in a batch reactor (500 mL) under mesophilic conditions and varying a number of operational factors: different substrate/inoculum ratios; four distinct values for C: N ratio; inoculum from different digesters; and inoculum collected at different times of the year. The following parameters were used to control and monitor the process: pH, alkalinity, volatile fatty acids (VFA), volatile solids (VS) and chemical oxygen demand (COD). Among the tests performed, the best result obtained for the biogas production corresponded to the use of 2 g of substrate and 98 mL of inoculum of the anaerobic digester of the Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) of Bragança, with addition of 150 mg of bicarbonate leading to a production of 1628 L biogas.kg-1 VS (57% methane). In relation to the biogas quality, the best result was obtained with 20 g of substrate and 380 mL of inoculum from the anaerobic digester sludge of WWTP of Ave (with addition 600 mg of sodium bicarbonate), presenting a value of 85% of CH4, with a production of 464 L biogas.kg-1 VS.
