Abstract

This BioDT use case covers Wild boar–African Swine Fever (ASF) modelling is one of two Use Cases under the Disease Outbreaks umbrella and with the Pollinators model will populate and demonstrate this part of the Biodiversity Digital Twin. The purpose of this use case is to inform data-driven responses for the management of the spread of wildlife diseases, specificallyAfrican swine fever (ASF).The model is intended to be dynamic – with each detection of the target pathogen in the wildlife population, the model is updated and rerun to produce more robust predictions including spatial mapping of risk, size and timeline of affected host(s), effectiveness of spatially-explicit control measures, and routine update of most suitable response. Although there are multiple potential stakeholders and user groups, the target audience for the initial BioDT application is limited to decision makers and people involved in decision support. Abstract

Their suggested stability towards high-voltage cathode materials makes halide-based solid electrolytes currently an interesting class of ionic conductors for solid-state batteries. Especially the LiMn2O4 spinel cathode active material is of interest due to its slightly higher nominal voltage and more resilience to overcharging compared to LiCoO2 and LiNixMnyCozO2 cathodes. Typically, a standard ratio of active material to solid electrolyte is used in composites for solid-state batteries. However, for ideal transport properties, and thus to achieve balanced and optimal partial-conductivities, this ratio needs to be re-optimized each time the material basis is changed. In this work, we show transport in the composite measured through both DC polarization as well as transmission line modeling of the impedance spectra. By balancing the partial transport parameters of the composite, an optimum capacity of the solid-state batteries is achieved. This work shows characterization and optimization of transport is required for unlocking the full potential of solid-state batteries.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is considered an umbrella concept of emerging technology that subsumes different approaches and bears huge potential for the field of workplace health promotion (WHP). Up to now, no reviews have been focused on the potential and approaches of AI in the context of WHP. Therefore, the present scoping review aims (1) to identify current AI-based technologies in the context of WHP, (2) to identify the use of AI-based technology in WHP-associated fields (e.g. prevention, occupational safety and hazard) and (3) to deduct emerging topics and future research directions for the adoption of AI in WHP.

Um entlang der deutsch-tschechischen Grenze im Falle von Störfällen grenznaher Industriebetriebe auf tschechischer Seite umweltmesstechnische Untersuchungen durchführen zu können, recherchierte und bewertete das Labor für Physik und Umweltmesstechnik der Hochschule Düsseldorf die technischen Möglichkeiten der unbemannten Immissionsmessung. Im Rahmen der Auswertung wurden umfangreiche Hinweise zur Auswahl eines adäquaten Flug- und Messsystems gegeben. Der Fokus lag darauf, den Gefahrenabwehrkräften vor Ort Messtechnik empfehlen zu können, mit der diese dann an repräsentativen Orten in Grenznähe möglichst schnell und ausreichend aussagekräftig überprüfen können, ob es zu einer Schadstoffeinwirkung kommen kann bzw. bereits gekommen ist. Abstract

We investigate the complexity of the reachability problem for (deep) neural networks: does it compute valid output given some valid input? It was recently claimed that the problem is NP-complete for general neural networks and specifications over the input/output dimension given by conjunctions of linear inequalities. We recapitulate the proof and repair some flaws in the original upper and lower bound proofs. Motivated by the general result, we show that NP-hardness already holds for restricted classes of simple specifications and neural networks. Allowing for a single hidden layer and an output dimension of one as well as neural networks with just one negative, zero and one positive weight or bias is sufficient to ensure NP-hardness. Abstract

Verifying properties and interpreting the behaviour of deep neural networks (DNN) is an important task given their ubiquitous use in applications, including safety-critical ones, and their blackbox nature. We propose an automata-theoric approach to tackling problems arising in DNN analysis. We show that the input-output behaviour of a DNN can be captured precisely by a (special) weak B\"uchi automaton of exponential size. We show how these can be used to address common verification and interpretation tasks like adversarial robustness, minimum sufficient reasons etc. We report on a proof-of-concept implementation translating DNN to automata on finite words for better efficiency at the cost of losing precision in analysis.

Abstract

Timed Recursive CTL (TRCTL) was recently proposed as a merger of two extensions of the well-known branching-time logic CTL: Timed CTL on one hand is interpreted over real-time systems like timed automata, and Recursive CTL (RecCTL) on the other hand obtains high expressiveness through the introduction of a recursion operator. Model checking for the resulting logic is known to be 2-EXPTIME-complete. The aim of this paper is to investigate the possibility to obtain a fragment of lower complexity without losing too much expressive power. It is obtained by a syntactic property called "tail-recursiveness" that restricts the way that recursive formulas can be built. This restriction is known to decrease the complexity of model checking by half an exponential in the untimed setting. We show that this also works in the real-time world: model checking for the tail-recursive fragment of TRCTL is EXPSPACE-complete. The upper bound is obtained by a standard untiming construction via region graphs, and rests on the known complexity of tail-recursive fragments of higher-order modal logics. 12. Are the supporters of socialism the losers of capitalism? Conformism in East Germany and transition success

Abstract

The empirical literature is inconclusive about whether a country's democratization has a long-lasting impact on former supporters or opponents of the bygone regime. With newly available individual-level data of former residents of the socialist German Democratic Republic (GDR), we analyze how supporters and opponents of the socialist system performed within the market-based democracy after reunification. Protesters, those who helped to overthrow the socialist regime in the Peaceful Revolution show higher life satisfaction and better labor market outcomes in the new politico-economic system. Former members of the ruling socialist party and employees in state-supervised sectors become substantially less satisfied. These results do not seem to be driven by differential reactions in the post-transition period, but rather by the removal of discriminatory practices in the GDR. Additional results indicate that conformism in the GDR also explains political preferences over the almost three decades after the reunification of Germany.

14. Fundamental Limits in Formal Verification of Message-Passing Neural Networks

Abstract

Output reachability and adversarial robustness are among the most relevant safety properties of neural networks. We show that in the context of Message Passing Neural Networks (MPNN), a common Graph Neural Network (GNN) model, formal verification is impossible. In particular, we show that output reachability of graph-classifier MPNN, working over graphs of unbounded size, non-trivial degree and sufficiently expressive node labels, cannot be verified formally: there is no algorithm that answers correctly (with yes or no), given an MPNN, whether there exists some valid input to the MPNN such that the corresponding output satisfies a given specification. However, we also show that output reachability and adversarial robustness of node-classifier MPNN can be verified formally when a limit on the degree of input graphs is given a priori. We discuss the implications of these results, for the purpose of obtaining a complete picture of the principle possibility to formally verify GNN, depending on the expressiveness of the involved GNN models and input-output specifications.

16. The legacy of state socialism on attitudes toward immigration

Abstract

Does the politico-economic system affect preferences for immigration? In this study, I show that individuals exposed to life under state socialism have formed and persistently hold different attitudes toward immigration. By exploiting the division and reunification of Germany, I estimate the influence of state socialism on attitudes toward immigration. Drawing on rich individual panel data, I find that East Germans who lived under state socialism, are 15 percent more likely to oppose immigration than West Germans who spent their entire life in a democratic, capitalist country. This difference in attitudes toward immigration is persistent over time and across space, and largest for cohorts born and raised under state socialism. This gap in attitudes can be traced back to a longer-term deterioration in trust. Evidence from members of a group that opposed the authoritarian system highlights the importance of state socialist ideology for attitude formation.

Abstract

International audience; Higher-Order Fixpoint Logic (HFL) is a modal specification language whose expressive power reaches far beyond that of Monadic Second-Order Logic, achieved through an incorporation of a typed λ-calculus into the modal µ-calculus. Its model checking problem on finite transition systems is decidable, albeit of high complexity, namely k-EXPTIME-complete for formulas that use functions of type order at most k > 0. In this paper we present a fragment with a presumably easier model checking problem. We show that so-called tail-recursive formulas of type order k can be model checked in (k − 1)-EXPSPACE, and also give matching lower bounds. This yields generic results for the complexity of bisimulation-invariant non-regular properties, as these can typically be defined in HFL.

Abstract

Fixpoint Logic with Chop (FLC) extends the modal μ-calculus with an operator for sequential composition between predicate transformers. This makes it an expressive modal fixpoint logic which is capable of formalising many non-regular program properties. Its satisfiability problem is highly undecidable. Here we define Visibly Pushdown Fixpoint Logic with Chop, a fragment in which fixpoint formulas are required to be of a certain form resembling visibly pushdown grammars. We give a sound and complete game-theoretic characterisation of FLC’s satisfiability problem and show that the games corresponding to formulas from this fragment are stair-parity games and therefore effectively solvable, resulting in 2EXPTIME-completeness of this fragment. Diese Kurzexpertise untermauert die Bedeutung von ehrenamtlichem Engagement für die Integration von Geflüchteten mit repräsentativen Zahlen. In Regionen mit besonders hohem ehrenamtlichem Engagement können Geflüchtete signifikant häufigeren Kontakt zu Deutschen, eine höhere Lebenszufriedenheit und bessere Deutschkenntnisse vorweisen. Dieser Zusammenhang besteht unabhängig von der lokalen Bevölkerungsstruktur, Wirtschaftskraft und Arbeitsmarktlage. Frauen und Geflüchtete mit niedrigem Bildungsstand profitieren beim Spracherwerb besonders stark von engagierten Ehrenamtlichen vor Ort. Geflüchtete mit Universitätsabschluss hingegen finden durch sie im Durchschnitt besser bezahlte Jobs. Es lässt sich jedoch kein unmittelbarer Zusammenhang zwischen zivilgesellschaftlichem Engagement und der Wahrscheinlichkeit, dass Geflüchtete eine Arbeit finden, feststellen. Die Ergebnisse deuten darauf hin, dass die Unterstützung durch Ehrenamtliche sich auch in einem verbesserten Zugang zu staatlichen Leistungen für Geflüchteten niederschlägt. 21. Spreading the disease: Protest in times of pandemics

Abstract

This study analyzes the impact of COVID-19 deniers on the spread of COVID-19 in Germany. In a first step, we establish a link between regional proxies of COVID-19 deniers and infection rates. We then estimate the causal impact of large anti-lockdown protests on the spread of COVID-19 using an event study framework. Employing novel data on bus stops of travel companies specialized in driving protesters to these gatherings, and exploiting the timing of two large-scale demonstrations in November 2020, we find sizable increases in infection rates in protesters' origin regions after these demonstrations. Individual-level evidence supports the main results by documenting that COVID-19 deniers engage less in health protection behavior. Our results contribute to the debate about the public health costs of individual behavior that has detrimental externalities for the society.

Abstract

The modal μ-calculus can only express bisimulation-invariant properties. It is a simple consequence of Kleene’s Fixpoint Theorem that on structures with finite bisimulation quotients, the fixpoint iteration of any formula converges after finitely many steps. We show that the converse does not hold: we construct a word with an infinite bisimulation quotient that is locally regular so that the iteration for any fixpoint formula of the modal μ-calculus on it converges after finitely many steps. Abstract

With increasing importance of organizational effectivity and efficiency measures like Balanced Scorecard and optimization of employee work behavior to achieve higher organizational efficiency, Human Resource activities concerning leadership development and academic leadership research are growing. Throughout the course of the twentieth century, a multitude of empirical studies show primarily positive relationships between different constructs of leadership models and desirable variables of organizational behavior. It becomes apparent, though, that in academic research the selection of analyzed leadership models and their consequences is very heterogeneous. This Master Thesis has the objective to contribute to Leadership Research by applying a comparative empirical study in the–until today–often neglected study population of in-house and sales personnel within the pharmaceutical industry. For this purpose, an online employee survey with N = 137 participants from a leading pharmaceutical company in Germany was conducted. Based on contemporary leadership theory, a range of Hypotheses regarding consequences of modern leadership models is empirically tested. The results of the study reconfirm Identification with Manager, Trust & Loyalty and Employee Satisfaction as consequences of Authentic as well as Transformational leadership. Work context as in-house vs. sales setting shows moderating effects on some of the leadership-consequences relationships. As the research involves multiple structurally different variables as well as constructs and compares feedback of different study populations, tangible management implications to boost desirable work attitudes and behaviors can be derived and appropriately adapted to match the respective work context. Ramifications for future scientific research are also presented.

Abstract

Einleitung: Verschiedene Studien konnten eine Verbesserung des Outcomes für erwachsene Patienten mit Infektionen im Falle einer leitliniengerechten antiinfektiven Therapie zeigen. Die vorliegende Studie wurde initiiert, um diesen Effekt auch für pädiatrische Patienten mit einer Pneumonie auf der Intensivstation zu evaluieren. Methodik: Die retrospektive Kohortenstudie wurde auf einer Kinderintensivstation des Universitätsklinikums Charité Berlin für den Zeitraum 2009 bis 2010 durchgeführt. Alle Patienten mit einer Liegedauer über 24 Stunden, einem Alter unter 18 Jahren, einer antiinfektiven Therapie oder dem Nachweis eines relevanten Erregers sowie einer radiologisch bestätigen Pneumonie wurden eingeschlossen. Die Adhärenz der antibiotischen Therapie zur nationalen Leitlinie wurde Tag für Tag geprüft und die Patienten in zwei Kohorten eingeteilt: eine Niedrigadhärenzgruppe (NAG) mit weniger als 70 % leitliniengetreuer Behandlungstage sowie eine Hochadhärenzgruppe (HAG) mit mindestens 70 %. Als primärer Outcomeparameter wurde die intensivstationäre Liegedauer festgelegt. Ergebnisse: Die HAG beinhaltet 65 Patienten und die NAG 61. Alter, Geschlecht, das Vorhandensein einer Immunsuppression sowie die Aufnahmeart waren in beiden Gruppen gleich verteilt. Die univariate Analyse ergab keinen signifikanten Unterschied der Mortalität (n=8 vs. n=8; p=0,892). Die Anzahl der beatmungspflichtigen Patienten zeigte ebenfalls keine signifikante Differenz zwischen HAG und NAG (n=37 vs. n=41; p=0,235). Jedoch konnte in der Hochadhärenzgruppe eine relevant geringere Beatmungsdauer ermittelt werden (8,38 Tage vs. 13,63 Tage; p=0,03). Es zeigte sich eine signifikante Reduktion der Liegedauer in HAG (9,31 vs. 13,66 Tage; p=0,016). Dies konnte mittels binärer logistischer Regressionsanalyse mit einer OddsRatio von 0,446 (95%KI 0,214 – 0,928) bestätigt werden. Schlussfolgerung: Pädiatrische Patienten scheinen von einer leitliniengetreuen antibiotischen Therapie von Lungenentzündungen zu profitieren., Introduction: Different studies dealing with adult patients revealed an outcome improvement for patients treated with high adherence according to guidelines. The present study was initiated to figure out the impact of guideline concordance on outcome of paediatric intensive care unit (PICU) patients suffering from pneumonia. Methods: This is a retrospective cohort study, accomplished on a PICU of a tertiary care University Hospital in Berlin in 2009 and 2010. The inclusion criteria are a length of stay (LOS) > 24 hours, age < 18 years, antimicrobial therapies or at least a positive microbiological finding and a radiologically confirmed diagnosis of pneumonia according to the “Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)” definitions. Adherence to the guideline was evaluated on a daily basis and patients were divided into two groups: High adherence group (HAG) with a concordance of ≥ 70% of all therapy days and low adherence group (LAG) with an occurrence of less than 70% days with guideline based therapy. Length of stay was defined as primary outcome parameter. Results: HAG consists of 65 patients and LAG of 61. Age, sex, immunosuppression and post-operative admission were equally distributed. Univariate analysis showed no significant difference in mortality between the groups (n=8 vs. n=8; p=0.892). Number of patients needing invasive ventilation did not vary between HAG and LAG (n=37 vs. n=41; p=0.235). However the duration of invasive ventilation was shorter in case of high guideline adherence (8.38 days vs. 13.63 days; p=0.03). Regarding the primary outcome parameter there was a significant shorter length of stay in HAG (9.31 vs. 13.66d; p=0.016). Binary logistic regression confirmed this result with an adjusted OddsRatio for HAG vs. LAG of 0.446 (95%CI 0.214 – 0.928). Conclusion: Children with pneumonia seem to benefit from guideline-based therapy with a faster clinical improvement and a shorter length of stay on PICU.

Abstract

There is an increasing need for an assessment of the impacts of land use and land use change (LUCC). In this context, simulation models are valuable tools for investigating the impacts of stakeholder actions or policy decisions. Agricultural landscape generators (ALGs), which systematically and automatically generate realistic but simplified representations of land cover in agricultural landscapes, can provide the input for LUCC models. We reviewed existing ALGs in terms of their objectives, design and scope. We found eight ALGs that met our definition. They were based either on generic mathematical algorithms (pattern-based) or on representations of ecological or land use processes (process-based). Most ALGs integrate only a few landscape metrics, which limits the design of the landscape pattern and thus the range of applications. For example, only a few specific farming systems have been implemented. We conclude that existing ALGs contain useful approaches that can be used for specific purposes, but ideally generic modular ALGs are developed that can be used for a wide range of scenarios, regions and model types. We have compiled features of such generic ALGs and propose a possible software architecture. Considerable joint efforts are required to develop such generic ALGs, but the benefits in terms of a better understanding and development of more efficient agricultural policies would be high.

2016 fand die erste Reallabor Befragung von Geflüchteten in der Rhein-Neckar-Region zu einem breiten Themenspektrum statt. Ende 2017 wurden die Befragten erneut mit einer Follow-up-Umfrage kontaktiert, um den Fortschritt ihrer Integration in den Arbeitsmarkt zu erfassen. Der vorliegende Bericht beschreibt diese Folgebefragung. Die Stichprobe ist nicht repräsentativ. Alle Ergebnisse beziehen sich ausschließlich auf männliche Asylsuchende, die im Sommer 2016 in Wiesloch und Sinsheim gelebt haben. Die Befragten der Folgebefragung sind tendenziell positiv selektiert insbesondere im Hinblick auf ihre frühere Beschäftigungsquote. Die Beschäftigungsquote stieg unter den Befragten von 20,5 Prozent in 2016 auf 38,6 Prozent Ende 2017. Der überwiegende Teil ist in Vollzeit beschäftigt, wobei auch Minijobs, Teilzeit, Ausbildung und Praktika eine gewisse Rolle spielen. In der Tendenz zeigen sich höhere Beschäftigungsquoten bei höherem Bildungsniveau. Die statistische Auswertung deutet darauf hin, dass neben Herkunftsland, Bildung und Sprachkenntnissen, andere Aspekte eine signifikante Rolle für die Aufnahme einer Beschäftigung spielen, insbesondere der Kontakt mit Deutschen sowie die Kosten der Flucht. Erfahrungen aus der Praxis bestätigen und ergänzen die statistischen Auswertungen, insbesondere mit Blick auf die große Bedeutung des Kontaktes zu Deutschen für den erfolgreichen Integrationsprozess. Abstract

We propose to use data-driven, unsupervised clustering techniques based on Autoencoder Networks (AEN) combined with Gaussian Mixture Models (GMM) to cluster EEG recordings from patients with Disorders of Consciousness (DoC). We evaluate the results by investigating the structures obtained after clustering and compare them between individual patients. We observe a good stability of cluster assignments throughout time. For some patients clusters arise which specif- ically cover the onsets of auditory stimulation.

Im Rahmen der Asylmigration sind in den letzten Jahren Menschen aus unterschiedlichsten Gründen nach Deutschland gekommen. Deutschland steht vor der Aufgabe, die Geflüchteten unterzubringen und ihnen neue Lebensperspektiven zu eröffnen. Dabei bilden die Menschen, die in den vergangenen Jahren nach Deutschland gekommen sind keine homogene Gruppe. So vielfältig die Gruppe der Neuzugewanderten ist, so vielfältig gestalten Städte und Kommunen die Maßnahmen zur Integration. Das Reallabor Asylsuchende in der Rhein-Neckar-Region analysiert seit 2016 Erfolgsfaktoren für eine nachhaltige gesellschaftliche Teilhabe von Geflüchteten und gestaltet Teilhabemöglichkeiten. Die vorliegenden Handlungsempfehlungen fassen die Ergebnisse der vielschichtigen Beobachtungen, Realexperimente, Befragungen und themenzentrierten Interviews zusammen und geben einen Überblick über Empfehlungen, die eine gesellschaftliche Teilhabe von Menschen mit Fluchthintergrund unterstützen.

Im Rhein-Neckar-Kreis finden sich vielfältige Akteure und Netzwerke, die die Arbeitsmarktintegration von Geflüchteten unterstützen. Auch wenn die konkreten Maßnahmen zur Arbeitsmarktintegration, die sich hier als erfolgreich erwiesen haben, kommunal spezifisch sind, so zeigen die Teilstudien zur Arbeitsmarktintegration im Rhein-Neckar-Kreis doch, dass für eine erfolgreiche Integration eine gute Passung mit den lokalen Bedingungen förderlich ist. Entscheidend sind die kommunalen Vernetzungs- und Unterstützungsstrukturen unter Berücksichtigung der Leistungen, Aufgaben und Möglichkeiten aller beteiligten Akteure. Die systematische Zusammenarbeit von Praxis und Wissenschaft im Rahmen des Reallabors Asylsuchende in der Rhein-Neckar-Region soll dazu beitragen, die Komplexität von Netzwerken und Herausforderungen vor Ort besser zu verstehen und damit die Integration zu befördern.

© 2018 The authors The 1st Snow Data Assimilation Workshop, organized under the COST Action ESSEM 1404 HarmoSnow, took place in Offenbach, Germany, on 8-9 March 2017. Of particular relevance for the workshop were thematic sessions on i) data assimilation methods and the use of snow observations, ii) snow observations and evaluation, iii) snow observations and physical snow models, and iv) snow observations and hydrological models. This report summarizes the scientific contributions presented at the workshop. The discussions mainly focused on methods for combining satellite observations with conventional in-situ snow measurements and modeling results, as well as on errors in the spatial and temporal representation of snow measurements for data assimilation in NWP and hydrological models. It has been shown that the assimilation of in-situ and satellite-based snow observations improves the quality of the snow analysis and forecast. Abstract

This study analyses the selection of recently arrived asylum seekers from Middle Eastern and African countries in Germany. The findings suggest that, on average, asylum seekers have 22 percent more years of schooling - the indicator used for human capital - when compared to same-aged persons from their country of origin. In addition, it is shown that asylum seekers in the sample often accumulated rather low or relatively high levels of schooling compared to same-aged persons in their countries of origin. This phenomenon is even more pronounced for parental education. It is demonstrated that the indicators of individual and parental human capital influence short-run integration outcomes in Germany, while work experience in the home country does not. The paper discusses potential economic explanations for the findings on immigrant selection and integration outcomes.

Abstract

BACKGROUND Degludec is an ultralong-Acting, once-daily basal insulin that is approved for use in adults, adolescents, and children with diabetes. Previous open-label studies have shown lower day-To-day variability in the glucose-lowering effect and lower rates of hypoglycemia among patients who received degludec than among those who received basal insulin glargine. However, data are lacking on the cardiovascular safety of degludec. METHODS We randomly assigned 7637 patients with type 2 diabetes to receive either insulin degludec (3818 patients) or insulin glargine U100 (3819 patients) once daily between dinner and bedtime in a double-blind, treat-To-Target, event-driven cardiovascular outcomes trial. The primary composite outcome in the time-To-event analysis was the first occurrence of an adjudicated major cardiovascular event (death from cardiovascular causes, nonfatal myocardial infarction, or nonfatal stroke) with a prespecified noninferiority margin of 1.3. Adjudicated severe hypoglycemia, as defined by the American Diabetes Association, was the prespecified, multiplicity-Adjusted secondary outcome. RESULTS Of the patients who underwent randomization, 6509 (85.2%) had established cardiovascular disease, chronic kidney disease, or both. At baseline, the mean age was 65.0 years, the mean duration of diabetes was 16.4 years, and the mean (±SD) glycated hemoglobin level was 8.4±1.7%; 83.9% of the patients were receiving insulin. Abstract

Im September 2016 konnte das Reallabor Asylsuchende im Rhein-Neckar-Kreis in zwei Gemeinschaftsunterkünften eine Befragung bei Geflüchteten durchführen. Insgesamt nahmen 370 Personen an der Befragung teil, darunter überwiegend junge Männer aus Afrika, Vorder- und Zentralasien. Die Befragung deckte ein breites Spektrum an Themen der Integration ab: Bildungshintergrund, Arbeitserfahrungen und derzeitige Arbeitsaktivitäten, soziale Netze und Aktionsräume in Deutschland, Dauer und Kosten der Flucht, Sprachkompetenzen und Gesundheitszustand. Die Ergebnisse aus Analysen verschiedener Teilstichproben zeigen einen nach Herkunftsregion unterschiedlichen Bildungshintergrund. Die Geflüchteten aus Vorderasien (Syrien, Türkei, u.a.) haben die meisten Bildungsjahre und auch die höchsten Bildungsabschlüsse. Viele Geflüchtete haben Schulden in der Größenordnung von mehreren Tausend Euro als Folge der Flucht. Rund drei Viertel der Befragten bezeichnen ihren Gesundheitszustand als subjektiv gut oder sehr gut, 12 Prozent der Befragten gehen (in teilweise wohl geringem Umfang) bezahlter Arbeit nach. Trotz der Schulden in Folge der Flucht ist die weit überwiegende Zahl der Befragten bereit in Deutschland eine Ausbildung zu absolvieren. Auch die subjektive Zukunftsperspektive der Befragten scheint durchweg positiv: rund 80 Prozent glauben, dass sie in den nächsten zwei Jahren einer bezahlten Arbeit in Deutschland nachgehen werden. Wichtige Teile der Integration finden im Alltag statt. Geflüchtete, die schon zu Besuch bei Deutschen gewesen sind, verfügen auch über bessere deutsche Sprachkenntnisse. Dieses Forschungsprojekt ist Teil des 'Reallabor Asylsuchende in der Rhein-Neckar-Region'. Ein gemeinsames Projekt der Pädagogischen Hochschule Heidelberg, des ZEW Mannheim und der Universität Heidelberg.

Abstract

We consider the hybridisation of the mu-calculus through the addition of nominals, binder and jump. Especially the use of the binder differentiates our approach from earlier hybridisations of the mu-calculus and also results in a more involved formal semantics. We then investigate the model checking problem and obtain ExpTime-completeness for the full logic and the same complexity as the modal mu-calculus for a fixed number of variables. We also show that this logic is invariant under hybrid bisimulation and use this result to show that - contrary to the non-hybrid case - the hybrid extension of the full branching time logic CTL* is not a fragment of the fully hybrid mu-calculus.

Abstract

The study analyses data collected among a group of young male refugees who participated in a randomized experiment. Refugees were randomly assigned to a soccer project, which aimed at facilitating labour market integration, or to a control group. We evaluate the randomization process, we discuss the survey design and implementation, and we summarize the main findings of the survey, focusing on labour market activity, pre-migration characteristics, and the monetary costs of the escape. In addition, we provide a preliminary outlook on the effectiveness of the course.

The 22nd International Symposium on Temporal Representation and Reasoning (TIME 2015) was held in Kassel, Germany, between the 23rd and the 25th of September 2015. The TIME Symposium series aims to bring together researchers interested in reasoning about temporal aspects of information in any area of Computer Science. The symposium series has a wide remit and intends to cater both for theoretical aspects and well-founded applications. One of the key aspects of the TIME symposium is its interdisciplinarity with attendees from distinct areas such as artificial intelligence, database management, logic and verification, and beyond.

Abstract

The study analyses data from a survey conducted in July 2016 in the German Rhine-Neckar region among a group of male refugees who participate in a small inclusive soccer project or are part of a control group. Our main findings with respect to labour market integration and the effect of program participation can be summarized as follows. The total group of 81 responding male asylum seekers is on average 23 years old, has on average spent nearly nine years in education and already accumulated five years of work experience in their home countries or on their way to Germany. They report on average a good health and are fairly optimistic about finding work in Germany. However, although they are on average already nine months in Germany only 36 percent were searching for a job, while 14 percent report that they were working at the time of the survey. Thus, it seems that the responding refugees are equipped with a good health, reasonable work experience and motivation, and a low level of education, comparted to Germans of the same age group. 28 survey participants engaged in the soccer project. Most of them indicated that they would like to participate more frequently. Responding refugees, who participate in the soccer project report that they visit German natives in their homes more often than the control groups, which hints at some initial positive short run integration effects. According to our experience respondents enjoyed collaboration in the survey. Since the number of respondents is small our findings are preliminary in nature. Future research that intends to more deeply assess causal impacts needs to rest on significantly larger samples and panel data. This research has been conducted as part of "Real World Laboratory: Asylum Seekers" - A joint research project of Heidelberg University of Education and ZEW Mannheim.

Abstract

We present the Sequent Calculus Trainer, a tool that supports students in learning how to correctly construct proofs in the sequent calculus for first-order logic with equality. It is a proof assistant fostering the understanding of all the syntactic principles that need to be obeyed in constructing correct proofs. It does not provide any help in finding good proof strategies. Instead it aims at understanding the sequent calculus on a lower syntactic level that needs to be mastered before one can consider proof strategies. Its main feature is a proper feedback system embedded in a graphical user interface.
