Abstract

We report on the performance of the MINOS Time Projection Chamber developed as a vertex tracker to study exotic nuclei produced from hydrogen-induced knockout via in-beam γ -ray and invariant-mass spectroscopy . In-beam measurements with 4 He and 20Ne beams at 200 and 350 MeV/nucleon, respectively, were performed at the HIMAC facility. The tracking algorithm for protons after quasi-free scattering is described. Realistic simulations and physics experiments are compared and show a good agreement. The vertex position resolution reaches 5 mm FWHM, mostly from re-scattering with the target and the Aluminum reaction chamber. The overall efficiency of vertex reconstruction is also benchmarked with the first experimental campaign data performed at the RIBF, confirming an overall efficiency better than 90% for physics experiments.

Abstract

Expérience GANIL; International audience; A high-purity co-axial germanium detector has been calibrated in efficiency to a precision of about 0.15% over a wide energy range. High-precision scans of the detector crystal and gamma-ray source measurements have been compared to Monte-Carlo simulations to adjust the dimensions of a detector model. For this purpose, standard calibration sources and short-lived on-line sources have been used. The resulting efficiency calibration reaches the precision needed e.g. for branching ratio measurements of super-allowed beta decays for tests of the weak-interaction standard model.

Abstract

In an experiment at the LISE3 facility of GANIL, we have studied with high precision the $0^{+}\rightarrow 0^{+}$ $ \beta$ decay of 38Ca. The LISE3 facility allowed to produce close to pure samples of the nuclide of interest. We measured the half-life of this nucleus to be 443.63(35)ms, whereas the super-allowed branching ratio was determined to be 77.14(35)%. Both data are in nice agreement with previous high-precision measurements and thus improve the overall precision of the experimental inputs to determine the corrected $F t$ value for this nucleus. We also compare the experimental Gamow-Teller strength distribution with theoretical shell-model predictions. Finally, future opportunities at LISE3 are discussed.

International audience; MINOS is a new apparatus dedicated to in-beam nuclear structure experiments with lowintensityexotic beams in inverse kinematics at intermediate energies above 150MeV/nucleon. The deviceis composed of a thick liquid-hydrogen target coupled to a compact time projection chamber (TPC) servingas a vertex tracker. Either used for in-beam gamma spectroscopy of bound excited states or invariant-massspectroscopy of unbound states, MINOS aims at improving the luminosity by a very significant factorcompared to standard solid-target material experiments while improving experimental resolutions.

Abstract

Inclusive multineutron and multiproton removal cross sections from 112Sn and 104Sn at relativistic energies have been measured. The data show two distinct regimes of the reaction process that depend on the nucleon evaporation cost of the final nucleus. This behavior is universal by regarding the mass or asymmetry of the initial system or target composition. A state-of-the-art cascade and deexcitation model reproduces the observed trend but systematically fails in reproducing cross sections for the removal of the more bound nucleon species. © 2013 American Physical Society., A. First observations were indirect measurements, using standard silicon detector devices. Since then, a new generation of experiments allowed for a direct observation, and opened the eld of more detailed studies, using tracking devices for the detection of the emitted protons.

International audience; The two-proton radioactivity has been evidenced experimentally in 2002 in the ground-state decay of 45Fe, while this new decay mode was predicted since the 60's. The first observations have been done indirectly, from various global quantities measured in the decay process (half-file, Q-value, daughter decay,...). Since then, new devices have been developed in order to perform energy and angular measurements of the emitted particles. The comparison of full experimental observations with theoretical models opens a new access to nuclear structure a the drip-line.

Abstract

Expérience GANIL/LISE3; The two-proton radioactivity of 45Fe was studied experimentally with a time projection chamber. The aim of the experiment was the reconstruction of the proton tracks in three dimensions. Energy and angular correlations have been determined and the data are compared with theoretical models, in particular with a three-body model. Moreover, the decay of 43Cr was studied and β-delayed one-, two- and threeproton emission could be established. The correlations observed for β-delayed two-proton emission favour a sequential emission. Finally, β-delayed two-proton emission was observed for the first time for 51Ni.

Abstract

The half-life of the mirror \(\beta\) decay of 31S has been measured at the IGISOL facility at the University of Jyvaskyla. The value obtained is \(T_{1/2}(^{31}S)=(2553.4\pm 1.8)\) ms, in agreement with previous measurements, but with a precision that is better by a factor of ten than the literature value previously adopted. When the new result is combined with the QEC value measured recently at JYFLTRAP, a precision of better than \(10^{-3}\) is obtained for the ft value.

Abstract

The b \beta -decay half-life and the ground-state-to-ground-state Q EC -value of 30S were measured with a relative precision of 14 and 2 parts in 104, respectively. The half-life measurement yields a value of 1175.9(17)ms which is in agreement with previous measurements but has a precision that is better by a factor of three. The new super-allowed Q EC -value 5464.32(20)keV is 20 times more precise and slightly larger than the previously adopted value. The experiment was performed at the IGISOL facility at the Accelerator Laboratory of the University of Jyväskylä., This work was supported in part by the Conseil Regional d’Aquitaine. Abstract

International audience; Studies of -delayed emission of protons for 43Cr and 51Ni were performed with a Time Projection Chamber. This detection setup allows to reconstruct in the three-dimensional space the tracks of the protons emitted. For the first time, -delayed emission of two protons is directly observed for 43Cr and 51Ni. The question about correlations between protons can be accessed. Finally, we show that 43Cr can emit up to three delayed protons.

Accepted for publication in Physical Review Letters, Expérience au GANIL E457b (juillet 2008), LISE3 Commune au CENBG avec ACEN, MECA, INSTRU et ELEC; The two protons emitted in the decay of 54Zn have been individually observed for the rst time in a Time Projection Chamber. The total decay energy and the half-life measured in this work agree with the results obtained in a previous experiment. Angular and energy correlations between the two protons are determined and compared to theoretical distributions of a three-body model. Within the shell model framework, the relative decay probabilities show a strong contribution of the p2 con guration for the two-proton emission. After 45Fe, the present result on 54Zn constitutes only the second case of a direct observation of the ground state two-proton decay of a long-lived isotope.

Abstract

Two‐proton radioactivity is an exotic decay mode for very proton‐rich nuclei. It was observed experimentally for the first time in 2002 for the nucleus 45Fe but the two protons could not be directly detected. So a new detector has been developed, a Time Projection Chamber, to individually observe the two protons emitted. It was used successfully during two experiments for the study of 45Fe and 54Zn. Energy correlations have been studied and the relative angle between the two protons is calculated.

However, the experiments performed at that time did not allow the observation of the two protons directly. We present here a new setup based on the principle of a time-projection chamber that enabled us for the first time to identify directly the two protons. The new setup permits the observation and reconstruction in three dimensions of the traces of the protons and to determine thus their individual energies and their relative angle. We will discuss the setup in all necessary details and describe its performances in the context of two-proton radioactivity and β-delayed two-proton emission studies.

Abstract

The half-life, the branching ratio, and the decay $Q$ value of the superallowed $\ensuremath{\beta}$ emitter $^{42}\mathrm{Ti}$ were measured in an experiment performed at the JYFLTRAP facility of the Accelerator Laboratory of the University of Jyv\"askyl\"a. $^{42}\mathrm{Ti}$ is the heaviest ${T}_{z}=\ensuremath{-}1$ nucleus for which high-precision measurements of these quantities have been tried. The half-life (${T}_{1/2}=208.14\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.45$ ms) and the $Q$ value [${Q}_{\mathrm{EC}}=7016.83(25)$ keV] are close to or reach the required precision of about 0.1%. The branching ratio for the superallowed decay branch [$\mathrm{BR}=47.7(12)%$], a by-product of the half-life measurement, does not reach the necessary precision yet. Nonetheless, these results allow one to determine the experimental $\mathit{ft}$ value and the corrected $\mathcal{F}t$ value to be 3114(79) and 3122(79) s, respectively.

Abstract

Commune avec INSTRU et ELEC; International audience; Two decay modes were predicted for nuclei at the proton drip-line by Goldanskii[ in the early 60's: the 1-proton radioactivity for odd-Z nuclei and the 2-proton radioactivity for even-Z nuclei. The first one was discovered experimentally in the 80's, while the 2-proton decay was observedfor the first time in 2002 in the decay of 45Fe at GANIL and GSI. This was confirmed by a recent GANIL experiment, that also stated 54Zn as a precursor of this decay model. This new radioactivity may provide many experimental pieces of information about masses for nuclei beyond the drip-line, single particle levels sequence, tunnelling processes or the pairing interaction. The challenging goal for experimental two-proton studies is then to perform a more extensive analysis of the decay process by measuring energy and angular correlations between the two emitted particles. This should allow for a comparison with models taking into account the structure of involved nuclei and the decay mechanism. For this purpose, a Time Projection Chamber detector has been developed at CENBG. It has been used successfully in an experiment performed at GANIL in September 2006, leading to the first direct observation of individual protons emitted in the decay of 45Fe. The experimental set-up and the first results of this experiment will be presented.
