In attaining the cold plasma condition at the divertor target via gas puffing and/or nitrogen seeding, a large variation in the pressure-momentum and cooling losses has, for the first time, been demonstrated on JET with the ITER-like wall, leveraging novel target electron temperature measurements and JET's unique capability for disentangling the main-ion-driven net dissipation effects from impurity radiation. These observations provide key insights into the dependence of volumetric losses on the dominant dissipation mechanisms, whether due to neutral-plasma interaction processes, impurity radiation induced detachment, and their interplay. While numerical code studies indicate that both volumetric cooling and pressure-momentum losses in the scrape-off layer (SOL) are essential for detachment to occur, experimental confirmation has been largely lacking, in large part due to diagnostic limitations. In the present assessment of L-mode discharges in the diagnostically optimized outer horizontal target configuration, the onset of pressure-momentum losses in nitrogen seeding scans in low recycling conditions is shown to occur at relatively high target electron temperature of 10 eV compared to pure deuterium pressure scans, leading to a more pronounced reduction in the target heat flux, and demonstrating for the first time the importance of momentum losses in impurity radiation dominated dissipative divertors in the absence of strong neutral-plasma interactions. Conversely, a relatively constant target heat flux response is observed above Te,t = 5 eV in pure deuterium density ramps, where the decrease in Te,t is balanced by a rise in target pressure prior to the ion flux rollover, coinciding with the pressure-momentum loss onset. While in practice the relative strength of each dissipation channel will be driven by integrated scenario requirements and core plasma performance constraints, this work demonstrates that there is no universal form of the fmom-loss and fcooling volumetric loss factors and their correlation. Moreover, the results confirm the theoretical and code predictions that both volumetric loss processes are required for detachment, while also resolving an apparent, but counter-intuitive, finding of the code results that volumetric power loss is insensitive to the presence of impurities, demonstrating that this is not the case experimentally. Further interpretive modelling is required to elucidate the dominant momentum and cooling loss channels in the observed trends.

Strongly radiating and detached high-power discharges in present-day full-metal tokamaks have a characteristic radiation pattern involving condensation of radiation near the X-point, with significant radiative losses above the X-point. In contrast, Demonstration Fusion Power Plant (DEMO) divertor exhaust scoping studies using reduced physics models, including a fluid description for the neutrals, place the strongest radiation fronts in the divertor legs, near the separatrix. The present contribution studies sensitivity of the radiation pattern corresponding to maximal divertor impurity radiation to those physics models that are typically neglected in the simulations due to their computational expense: cross-field drifts, complex impurity models and kinetic neutrals. Model benchmarking is carried out in comparison to L-mode discharges, which are shown to feature both divertor and X-point radiation. The simulated plasma conditions with maximal divertor radiation have in–out asymmetries in the divertor legs and at the divertor entrance, and the asymmetries and the radiation patterns are observed to be sensitive to both cross-field drift effects and the neutral model. DEMO simulations, carried out using SOLPS-ITER, show an impact of cross-field drifts on the divertor asymmetries, but the impact is not large enough to move the radiation front from the divertor legs to regions above the X-point.

Effects of N-seeding in L-mode experiments in ASDEX Upgrade and JET are analysed numerically with the SOLPS5.0 code package. The modelling yields 3 qualitatively different radiative regimes with increasing N concentration, when initially attached outer divertor conditions are studied. The radiation pattern is observed to evolve asymmetrically, with radiation increasing first in the inner divertor, then in the outer divertor, and finally on closed field lines above the X-point. The properties of these radiative regimes are observed to be sensitive to cross-field drifts and they differ between the two devices. The modelled scaling of the divertor radiated power with the divertor neutral pressure is similar to an experimental scaling law for H-mode radiation. The same parametric dependencies are not observed in simulations without drifts.

For the past several years, the JET scientific programme (Pamela et al 2007 Fusion Eng. Des. 82 590) has been engaged in a multi-campaign effort, including experiments in D, H and T,leading up to 2020 and the first experiments with 50%/50% D–T mixtures since 1997 and the first ever D–T plasmas with the ITER mix of plasma-facing component materials. For this purpose, a concerted physics and technology programme was launched with a view to prepare the D–T campaign (DTE2). This paper addresses the key elements developed by the JET programme directly contributing to the D–T preparation. This intense preparation includes the review of the physics basis for the D–T operational scenarios, including the fusion power predictions through first principle and integrated modelling, and the impact of isotopes in the operation and physics of D–T plasmas (thermal and particle transport, high confinement mode (H-mode) access, Be and W erosion, fuel recovery, etc). This effort also requires improving several aspects of plasma operation for DTE2, such as real time control schemes, heat load control, disruption avoidance and a mitigation system (including the installation of a new shattered pellet injector), novel ion cyclotron resonance heating schemes (such as the threeions scheme), new diagnostics (neutron camera and spectrometer, active Alfvèn eigenmode antennas, neutral gauges, radiation hard imaging systems…) and the calibration of the JET neutron diagnostics at 14 MeV for accurate fusion power measurement. The active preparation of JET for the 2020 D–T campaign provides an incomparable source of information and a basis for the future D–T operation of ITER, and it is also foreseen that a large number of key physics issues will be addressed in support of burning plasmas.

Carbon transport in the ASDEX Upgrade outer divertor plasma is investigated in numerical simulations. The SOLPS5.0 code package is used to model the scrape-off layer plasma in a set of repeated lower-single-null L-mode discharges. Special emphasis is given to replicate the plasma conditions measured in the full tungsten, vertical outer target of ASDEX Upgrade, and solutions with and without the effect of drifts are presented. First ERO simulations of hydrocarbon transport in a SOLPS plasma background including drifts are carried out, and significantly closer match to the experimental 13C deposition pattern is obtained than with the solution without drifts. The 2D divertor electric field predicted by SOLPS is applied to the ERO modelling, and it is observed to result in a poloidal hydrocarbon drift that agrees well with the experiment. The heat flux to the target plates qp is a crucial design parameter for fusion machines. In attached regimes the majority of the power entering the SOL across the separatrix flows to a narrow region on the divertor target plates. Predictions of heat loads in future machines are typically based on scaling laws derived from experimental data. qp can be measured by infrared (IR) cameras viewing the target plates. Alternatively, Langmuir probes can be used to determine qp from the temperature and particle flux measured at the sheath edge in close proximity to the target plates (<

The ASDEX Upgrade programme is directed towards physics input to critical elements of the ITER design and the preparation of ITER operation, as well as addressing physics issues for a future DEMO design. After the finalization of the tungsten coating of the plasma facing components, the re-availability of all flywheel-generators allowed high-power operation with up to 20 MW heating power at I p up to 1.2 MA. Implementation of alternative ECRH schemes (140 GHz O2- and X3-mode) facilitated central heating above n e = 1.2 × 1020 m−3 and low q 95 operation at B t = 1.8 T. Central O2-mode heating was successfully used in high P/R discharges with 20 MW total heating power and divertor load control with nitrogen seeding. Improved energy confinement is obtained with nitrogen seeding both for type-I and type-III ELMy conditions. The main contributor is increased plasma temperature, no significant changes in the density profile have been observed. This behaviour may be explained by higher pedestal temperatures caused by ion dilution in combination with a pressure limited pedestal and hollow nitrogen profiles. Core particle transport simulations with gyrokinetic calculations have been benchmarked by dedicated discharges using variations of the ECRH deposition location. The reaction of normalized electron density gradients to variations of temperature gradients and the T e/T i ratio could be well reproduced. Doppler reflectometry studies at the L–H transition allowed the disentanglement of the interplay between the oscillatory geodesic acoustic modes, turbulent fluctuations and the mean equilibrium E × B flow in the edge negative E r well region just inside the separatrix. Improved pedestal diagnostics revealed also a refined picture of the pedestal transport in the fully developed H-mode type-I ELM cycle. Impurity ion transport turned out to be neoclassical in between ELMs. Electron and energy transport remain anomalous, but exhibit different recovery time scales after an ELM. After recovery of the pre-ELM profiles, strong fluctuations develop in the gradients of n e and T e. The occurrence of the next ELM cannot be explained by the local current diffusion time scale, since this turns out to be too short. Fast ion losses induced by shear Alfvén eigenmodes have been investigated by time-resolved energy and pitch angle measurements. This allowed the separation of the convective and diffusive loss mechanisms.

The 2004 tracer experiment of JET with the injection of 13CH4 into H-mode plasma at the outer divertor has been modelled with the Monte Carlo impurity transport code ERO. EDGE2D solutions for inter-ELM and ELM-peak phases were used as plasma backgrounds. Local two-dimensional (2D) deposition patterns at the vertical outer divertor target plate were obtained for comparison with post-mortem surface analyses. ERO also provides emission profiles for comparison with radially resolved spectroscopic measurements. Modelling indicates that enhanced re-erosion of deposited carbon layers is essential in explaining the amount of local deposition. Assuming negligible effective sticking of hydrocarbons, the measured local deposition of 20–34% is reproduced if re-erosion of deposits is enhanced by a factor of 2.5–7 compared to graphite erosion. If deposits are treated like the substrate, the modelled deposition is 55%. Deposition measurements at the shadowed area around injectors can be well explained by assuming negligible re-erosion but similar sticking behaviour there as on plasma-wetted surfaces.

The JET 2019–2020 scientific and technological programme exploited the results of years of concerted scientific and engineering work, including the ITER-like wall (ILW: Be wall and W divertor) installed in 2010, improved diagnostic capabilities now fully available, a major neutral beam injection upgrade providing record power in 2019–2020, and tested the technical and procedural preparation for safe operation with tritium. Research along three complementary axes yielded a wealth of new results. Firstly, the JET plasma programme delivered scenarios suitable for high fusion power and alpha particle (a) physics in the coming D–T campaign (DTE2), with record sustained neutron rates, as well as plasmas for clarifying the impact of isotope mass on plasma core, edge and plasma-wall interactions, and for ITER pre-fusion power operation. The efficacy of the newly installed shattered pellet injector for mitigating disruption forces and runaway electrons was demonstrated. Secondly, research on the consequences of long-term exposure to JET-ILW plasma was completed, with emphasis on wall damage and fuel retention, and with analyses of wall materials and dust particles that will help validate assumptions and codes for design and operation of ITER and DEMO. Thirdly, the nuclear technology programme aiming to deliver maximum technological return from operations in D, T and D–T benefited from the highest D–D neutron yield in years, securing results for validating radiation transport and activation codes, and nuclear data for ITER.
