The management principles expressed in this document are a coherent extension of those described in the ECSGS Science Implementation Plan. The document is compliant with the ECSS standards, as tailored for the Euclid SGS.

We use cosmic microwave background (CMB) and large-scale structure data to constrain cosmological models where the primordial perturbations have both an adiabatic and a cold dark matter (CDM) isocurvature component. We allow for a possible correlation between the adiabatic and isocurvature modes, and for different spectral indices for the power in each mode and for their correlation. We do a likelihood analysis with 11 independent parameters. We discuss the effect of choosing the pivot scale for the definition of amplitude parameters. The upper limit for the isocurvature fraction is 18% around a pivot scale k = 0.01 Mpc^{-1}. For smaller pivot wavenumbers the limit stays about the same. For larger pivot wavenumbers, very large values of the isocurvature spectral index are favored, which makes the analysis problematic, but larger isocurvature fractions seem to be allowed. For large isocurvature spectral indices n_iso > 2 a positive correlation between the adiabatic and isocurvature mode is favored, and for n_iso < 2 a negative correlation is favored. The upper limit to the nonadiabatic contribution to the CMB temperature variance is 7.5%. Of the standard cosmological parameters, determination of the CDM density $\omega_c$ and the sound horizon angle $\theta$ (or the Hubble constant $H_0$) are affected most by a possible presence of a correlated isocurvature contribution. The dark energy in the Universe is described in the context of modified Friedmann equations as a fluid parameterized by the density of dark matter and undergoing an adiabatic expansion. This formulation is applied to the Cardassian model. Choosing then parameters consistent with the supernova observations, it gives a background expansion in which the cosmic temperature fluctuations are calculated. The resulting spectrum is quite similar to what is obtained in the standard concordance model. If the Cardassian fluid is interpreted as a new kind of interacting dark matter, its overdensities are driven into oscillations when the interaction energy is rising in importance. This does not occur in a description of the Cardassian fluctuations motivated by theories of modified gravity. There the energy of the underlying matter is also conserved, which requires appearance of effective shear stress in the late Universe. In both approaches that allow fluctuations the thermal power spectrum at large scales is much too strongly enhanced by the late integrated Sachs-Wolfe effect. With the interacting dark matter assumption, we conclude that the Cardassian model is ruled out by observations, expect in a small neighbourhood of the $\Lambda$CDM limit., Comment: 11 pages, 11 figures, to appear in PRD

I review standard big bang nucleosynthesis and some versions of nonstandard BBN. The abundances of the primordial isotopes D, He-3, and Li-7 produced in standard BBN can be calculated as a function of the baryon density with an accuracy of about 10%. For He-4 the accuracy is better than 1%. The calculated abundances agree fairly well with observations, but the baryon density of the universe cannot be determined with high precision. We explore constraints on various forms for the effective potential during inflation based upon a statistical comparison between inflation-generated fluctuations in the cosmic microwave background temperature and the COBE DMR results. Fits to the COBE 53A+B x 90A+B angular correlation function are obtained using simple analytic forms for the effective potential in chaotic inflation models. Not surprisingly, these fits are optimized for a nearly scale-free fluctuation power spectrum. However, from the chi^2 distribution for the fits we can set upper limits of n le 1.2 and n le 7 at the 1 sigma and 2 sigma confidence levels, respectively, for a V(phi) = lambda phi^n effective potential. Similarly, new limits on parameters for polynomial effective potentials can be determined at the 1 sigma and 2 sigma confidence levels. Modern cosmology has sharpened questions posed for millennia about the origin of our cosmic habitat. The age-old questions have been transformed into two pressing issues primed for attack in the coming decade: How did the Universe begin? and What physical laws govern the Universe at the highest energies? The clearest window onto these questions is the pattern of polarization in the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB), which is uniquely sensitive to primordial gravity waves. A detection of the special pattern produced by gravity waves would be not only an unprecedented discovery, but also a direct probe of physics at the earliest observable instants of our Universe. Experiments which map CMB polarization over the coming decade will lead us on our first steps towards answering these age-old questions.

The near-future of observational cosmology lies in extensive galaxy surveys that will map the dynamic evolution of the Universe for large part of its history. An example of such a survey is the European Space Agencys (ESA) Euclid mission. It is a space telescope scheduled to launch in 2023. The Euclid wide survey will cover 15000 square degrees, which is more than one third of the sky. It is expected to observe photometrically roughly 1.5 billion galaxies for the purposes of weak lensing analysis. In addition, 50 million galaxies will be observed spectroscopically, which will allow accurate determination of their three-dimensional distribution. The spectroscopic measurements will reach above a redshift of 2 - covering over 75% of the history of the Universe -- and photometric measurements to even higher redshifts. An important aspect of measuring the galaxy distribution is that its evolution reflects the expansion history of the Universe. It is thus a powerful tool for understanding the processes that drive the expansion. To be able to compare the evolution of the distribution with predictions from, for example, models of dark energy, we need to extract various statistics of the galaxy distribution. An important quantity is the two-point correlation function, which is a measure of amount of clustering at different spatial scales. Estimators for the two-point correlation functions rely on counting pairs of objects, usually galaxies or their clusters. The large number of galaxies Euclid is going to observe will make the clustering analysis a non-trivial computational task. The situation becomes even more challenging when one needs to estimate the covariance of the two-point correlation function estimates. This is usually done by measuring clustering of mock galaxy samples. To reach the parameter accuracy Euclid is aiming for, the number of samples needed is of the order of many thousands, thus in principle increasing the cost of a two-point correlation function estimate by the same factor. It is therefore of paramount importance to perform this analysis step as efficiently as possible. Two of the three publications included in this thesis deal with this need for efficiency. A central part of methods introduced in them is the so-called random catalog. It is a counterpart to the measured galaxy catalog that is used to model the survey geometry and various selection effects. We show that it is possible to use the random sample in clever ways to significantly speed up the computation with negligible loss of accuracy. We present one method for a single two-point correlation function estimate and another one for its covariance. We show that in a situation representative of a spectroscopic galaxy sample we can reach speed-up by a factor of order of ten -- for each method. The combined factor of hundred could already be decisive in whether the analysis is computationally feasible or not. In the end, the computational efficiency is only a tool for reaching more and more precise scientific results. The third paper in this thesis offers an example of a clustering-based cosmological analysis. Within the current theoretical understanding of the large scale structure of the Universe it is possible to obtain relations between the clustering of clusters of galaxies and the masses of their hosting dark matter halos. Generally, the more massive the halos, the more strongly clustered they are. In the paper we study this connection in detail using an X-ray selected, already-published sample of galaxy clusters. We find that the cosmological predictions for the clustering of clusters gives results that are compatible with the observations and the cosmological parameters inferred from the measurements are consistent with those obtained from the cluster mass function and the Cosmic Microwave Background. Havaitsevan kosmologian tulevaisuus on laajoissa galaksikartoituksissa, joiden avulla saadaan tarkka kuva maailmankaikkeuden laajenemishistoriasta. Yksi esimerkki tällaisesta galaksikartoitushankkeesta on Euroopan avaruusjärjestön ESA:n Euclid avaruusteleskooppi, joka laukaistaan 2023. Euclid tulee kuuden vuoden aikana kuvaamaan noin kolmanneksen taivaasta ja havainnot kattavat yli 75 % maailmankaikkeuden laajenemishistoriasta. Tämän historian puolestaan määrää maailmankaikkeuden aine-energiasisältö, mikä mahdollistaa esimerkiksi pimeän energian luonteen tutkimisen. Oleellisia ovat erilaiset galaksien avaruudellista jakaumaa kuvaavat tilastolliset suureet, joita voidaan verrata pimeän energian malleista saataviin ennusteisiin. Tärkeä esimerkki tällaisesta suureesta on galaksien kaksipistekorrelaatiofunktio, joka kuvaa galaksien klusteroitumisen voimakkuutta. Tämä funktio voidaan määrittää havaitusta galaksiaineistosta numeerisesti laskemalla galaksiparien määriä eri etäisyysskaaloilla. Esimerkiksi Euclidin tuottama suuri havaintoaineisto tekee tästä laskennallisesti raskasta. Tilanne muuttu yhä haastavammaksi, kun ryhdytään laskemaan korrelaatiofunktion hajontaa eli kovarianssia. Tämä tehdään tyypillisesti laskemalla korrelaatiofunktio suuresta määrästä, mahdollisesti useista tuhansista simuloiduista galaksikatalogeista, jolloin laskennallinen vaativuus kasvaa periaatteessa samalla kertoimella. Kaksi väitöskirjaan sisältyvästä kolmesta artikkelista pyrkii vastaamaan tähän haasteeseen tehostamalla korrelaatiofunktion ja sen kovarianssin laskemisessa käytettäviä algoritmeja. Oleellinen osa kehitettyjä menetelmiä on niin sanottu satunnaiskatalogi, jonka avulla mallinnetaan kunkin galaksikartoituksen havaitseman alueen geometriaa ja erilaisia valintaefektejä. Julkaisuissa osoitamme, että muokkaamalla satunnaiskatalogin käyttöä sopivasti voidaan sekä yksittäisen korrelaatiofunktion että sen kovarianssimatriisin määrittämiseen tarvittava laskenta-aika laskea alle kymmenesosaan tarkkuuden kärsimättä. Yhdistettynä nämä menetelmät vähentävät kovarianssin laskentavaativuutta noin tekijällä sata, mikä on ratkaisevan tärkeää esimerkiksi Euclidin data-analyysissä. Väitöskirjaan sisältyvä kolmas julkaisu on esimerkki korrelaatiofunktion käytöstä analyysissä, jossa pyritään määrittämään kosmologisen mallin parametrien arvoja. Analyysissä havaittiin, että galaksijoukkojen (jotka eivät klusteroitumisen puolesta periaatteessa eroa yksittäisistä galakseista) korrelaatiofunktiosta johdetut parametrien arvot ovat yhteensopivia esimerkiksi kosmisesta mikroaaltotaustasta saatujen tulosten kanssa.

The most valuable asset of a space mission like Euclid are the data. Due to their huge volume, the automatic quality control becomes a crucial aspect over the entire lifetime of the experiment. Here we focus on the design strategy for the Science Ground Segment (SGS) Data Quality Common Tools (DQCT), which has the main role to provide software solutions to gather, evaluate, and record quality information about the raw and derived data products from a primarily scientific perspective. The SGS DQCT will provide a quantitative basis for evaluating the application of reduction and calibration reference data, as well as diagnostic tools for quality parameters, flags, trend analysis diagrams and any other metadata parameter produced by the pipeline. In a large programme like Euclid, it is prohibitively expensive to process large amount of data at the pixel level just for the purpose of quality evaluation. Thus, all measures of quality at the pixel level are implemented in the individual pipeline stages, and passed along as metadata in the production. In this sense most of the tasks related to science data quality are delegated to the pipeline stages, even though the responsibility for science data quality is managed at a higher level. The DQCT subsystem of the SGS is currently under development, but its path to full realization will likely be different than that of other subsystems. Primarily because, due to a high level of parallelism and to the wide pipeline processing redundancy, for instance the mechanism of double Science Data Center for each processing function, the data quality tools have not only to be widely spread over all pipeline segments and data levels, but also to minimize the occurrences of potential diversity of solutions implemented for similar functions, ensuring the maximum of coherency and standardization for quality evaluation and reporting in the SGS., 4 pages, to appear in the Proceedings of ADASS 2016, Astronomical Society of the Pacific (ASP) Conference Series

The cosmic microwave background carries a wealth of cosmological information. It originates from the roughly 380,000-year-old Universe, and has traversed through the entire history of the Universe since. The observed radiation contains temperature anisotropies at the level of few times 10^−5 across the sky. By mapping out these temperature anisotropies, and their polarisation over the full sky, we can unravel some fundamental mysteries of our Universe. The cosmic microwave background was discovered by chance in 1965. Ever since the first discovery cosmologists have strived to measure its properties with increasing precision. The latest satellite mission to map the cosmic microwave background has been the European Space Agency s Planck satellite. Planck measured the cosmic sky for four years from 2009 to 2013 with unprecedented combination of sensitivity, angular resolution and frequency coverage. Planck s observations confirm the basic ΛCDM model, which is the most elementary model explaining the observed properties of the Universe. As the precision of measurements has improved, the data volumes have grown rapidly. Modern-sized datasets require sophisticated algorithms to tackle the challenges in the data analysis. In this thesis we will discuss two data analysis themes: map-making and residual noise estimation. Specifically, we will answer the following questions: how to produce sky maps, and low-resolution maps with corresponding noise covariance matrices from the Planck Low Frequency Instrument data. The low-resolution maps and the noise covariance matrices are required in the analysis of the largest structures of the microwave sky. The sky maps for the Stokes I, Q, and U components from the Planck Low Frequency Instrument data are built using the Madam map-maker. Madam is based on the generalised destriping principle. In the destriping the correlated part of the instrumental noise is modelled as a sequence of constant offsets, called baselines. Further, a generalised destriper is able to employ prior information on the instrumental noise properties to enhance the accuracy of noise removal. We achieved nearly optimal noise removal by destriping the data at the HEALPix resolution of Nside = 1024 using 0.25 s baselines for the 30 GHz channel, and 1 s baselines for the 44 and 70 GHz channels provided that a destriping mask, horn-uniform weighting and horn-uniform flagging was applied. For the low-l analysis we also provide maps at the resolution of Nside = 16. These low-resolution maps were downgraded from the high-resolution maps using a noise-weighted downgrading scheme combined with the Gaussian smoothing for the temperature component. The resulting maps were adequate for the Planck 2015 data release, but for the final round of Planck data analysis the downgrading scheme will need to be revised. The estimated maps will always contain some degree of residual noise. The analysis steps after the map-making, component separation and power spectrum estimation, require solid understanding of those residuals. We have three complementary methods at our disposal: half-ring noise maps, noise Monte Carlo simulations, and the noise covariance matrices. The half-ring noise maps characterise the residual noise directly at the map level, while the other methods rely on noise estimates. The noise covariance matrices describe pixel-pixel correlations of the residual noise, and they are needed especially in the low-l likelihood analysis. Hence, it is sufficient to calculate them at the highest feasible resolution of Nside = 64, and subsequently downgrade them to the target resolution of Nside = 16 using the same downgrading scheme as for the maps. The different residual noise estimates seem to show good agreement. Kosminen taustasäteily on lämpösäteilyä, joka juontaa juurensa varhaiseen maailmankaikkeuteen. Fotonien siroaminen vapaista elektroneista lisäksi polarisoi taustasäteilyn. Se on lämpötilavaihtelujakin heikompi ilmiö, mutta täydentää niiden kertomaa kuvaa varhaisesta maailmankaikkeudesta. Kosminen taustasäteily havaittiin ensimmäisen kerran vuonna 1965, jonka jälkeen sitä on tutkittu viidenkymmenen vuoden ajan kuumeisesti sekä maanpäältä että avaruudesta käsin. Yksi tärkeä lenkki pitkässä havaintojen ketjussa on toukokuussa 2009 avaruuteen laukaistu Euroopan avaruusjärjestön Planck-satelliitti. Planck mittasi neljän vuoden ajan, aina lokakuuhun 2013 asti, aiempaa tarkemmin taustasäteilyn voimakkuutta, ja myös sen polarisaatiota. Edeltäjiinsä verrattuna Planck oli herkempi ja tarkempi, sekä havainnoi laajemmalla aallonpituusalueella. Taustasäteilyn lisäksi Planck näki myös muut mikroaaltoaallonpituuksilla säteilevät kohteet: kaukaisista galaksijoukoista, Linnunrataan ja aurinkokunnan kohteisiin saakka. Planckin havainnoista on voitu koostaa tarkimmat kartat eri mikroaaltolähteistä maailmankaikkeudessa sekä lämpötilalle että polarisaatiolle. Planck-yhteisö on julkistanut kerättyä dataa kolmesti. Näistä ensimmäinen julkistus vuonna 2011 tarjosi dataa tähtitieteilijöiden käyttöön, kun taas kaksi jälkimmäistä keväällä 2013 ja 2015 keskittyivät erityisesti kosmologiaan. Planckin tulokset vahvistavat osaltaan kosmologian standardimallia. Kosmologian standardimalli on yksinkertaisin malli, joka selittää maailmankaikkeuden havaitut ominaisuudet: kosmisen taustasäteilyn, kevyiden alkuaineiden määrät, suuren mittakaavan rakenteen ja maailmankaikkeuden kiihtyvän laajenemisen. Mitattu data käy läpi monivaiheisen analyysiketjun tiedonjyvästen esiin kaivamiseksi. Tämä väitöskirja käsittelee erityisesti kuinka Planckin matalien taajuuksien instrumentin datasta koostetaan taivaankarttoja sekä kuinka kartoissa jäljellä olevaa kohinaa mallinnetaan myöhemmissä analyysivaiheissa. Planck-yhteisö hioo edelleenkin sekä analyysimenetelmiä että ymmärrystä itse datasta tarkemmiksi. Lopullisia tuloksia projektista odotetaan vuoden 2016 aikana.

We constrain cosmological models where the primordial perturbations have an adiabatic and a (possi- bly correlated) cold dark matter (CDI), neutrino density (NDI) or neutrino velocity (NVI) isocurvature component. We use both a phenomenological approach, where the power spectra of primordial per- turbations are parametrized with two amplitudes at two different scales, and a slow-roll two-field inflation approach where inflation slow-roll parameters are used as primary parameters, determining the spectral indices and the ratio of tensor perturbations to scalar perturbations. We use WMAP 7- year and 9-year data combined with other CMB data and Planck 2013 CMB temperature anisotropy data. Bayesian methods indicate no preference for any of the isocurvature modes: the CMB data set tight upper bounds on any non-adiabatic contribution to the observed CMB temperature variance. We show that allowing for a primordial tensor contribution has a negligible effect on the determi- nation of the non-adiabatic contribution and vice versa, as long as the tensor spectral index obeys the first inflationary consistency relation. On large scales, the WMAP CMB data seem to constrain isocurvature tighter than the Planck data. This is due to the lack of power at low multipoles, l ∼ 2...40, in the Planck data compared to the prediction of the best-fitting adiabatic ΛCDM model. Hence the Planck data prefer a power-reducing mechanism, which the mixed adiabatic and isocurva- ture models with negative correlation or full anticorrelation can offer. With WMAP 9-year data we find that in the NDI and NVI cases larger isocurvature fractions are allowed than in the correspond- ing models with CDI. For uncorrelated perturbations, the upper limit to the primordial NDI (NVI) fraction is 24% (20%) at k = 0.002Mpc−1 and 28% (16%) at k = 0.01Mpc−1. For maximally correlated (anticorrelated) perturbations, the upper limit to the NDI fraction is 3.0% (0.9%). The non-adiabatic contribution to the CMB temperature variance can be 10% ( 13%) for the NDI (NVI) modes. For Planck data the non-adiabatic contribution to the temperature variance can be up to 7%, 9%, 5% in the CDI, NDI, NVI models. The Planck data constrain the primordial CDI fraction in specific curvaton and axion scenarios to 0.25% and 3.9%, respectively. All bounds above are at 95% CL. With the WMAP data, relaxing the pure adiabaticity assumption leads to large shifts of the preferred values of standard cosmological parameters and broadening of their posterior probability distributions. In contrast, as the Planck data determines the acoustic peak structure precisely up to the sixth acoustic peak, allowing for a mixture of the primordial adiabatic and an isocurvature mode does not significantly affect the determination of standard cosmological parameters. Isokurvatuurihäiriöt (vakiokaarevuushäiriö) puolestaan säilyttävät kokonaistiheyden vakiona ja häiriöt ovat ainoastaan aineosien suhteellisia vaihteluja. Alkuräjähdysteorian mukaan maailmankaikkeus on laajennut jatkuvasti. Aluksi laajenemisen uskotaan olleen eksponentiaalisen nopeaa. Tätä vaihetta kutsutaan kosmologiseksi inflaatioksi. Kvanttimekaniikan lakien mukaan mikroskooppisen pienille alueille syntyy väistämättä häiriöitä, kvanttifluktuaatioita. Inflaatio laajentaa nämä pienen alueen kvanttifluktuaatiot kosmologisiin mittakaavoihin. Mikäli voimme havainnoin määritellä kosmologisten tiheysvaihteluiden luonteen, voimme myös päätellä, minkä tyyppiset fysiikan lainalaisuudet hallitsivat näiden häiriöiden syntyhetkellä, inflaation aikakautena, ja näin arvioida erilaisten teoreettisten inflaatiomallien todennäköisyyksiä. Kosminen mikroaaltotausta (CMB) on varhaisen maailmankaikkeuden lähettämä kuva meille ajalta, jolloin valo vapautui muusta aineesta eli maailmankaikkeus tuli läpinäkyväksi. Avaruuden laajeneminen on muuttanut tämän näkyvän (keltaisen) aallonpituuden valon mikroaaltosäteilyksi. Mittaamalla tarkkaan CMB:n voimakkuutta (kirkkautta) eri suunnissa taivaalla saamme tietoa varhaisen maailmankaikkeuden lämpötilavaihteluista, joista taas voidaan laskea tiheysvaihtelut. WMAP- ja Planck-satelliittihankkeet ovat kartoittaneet taivaan CMB:tä. Väitöskirjassa esitetään näistä CMB kartoituksista tilastollisin menetelmin arvioituja isokurvatuurihäiriöiden ylärajoja suhteessa adiabaattiseen häiriöön. Työssä tarkastellaan eri tyyppisiä isokurvatuurihäiriöitä, kuten kylmän pimeän aineen (CDM) ja säteilyn välinen tiheysvaihtelu (CDI), neutriinojen tiheyden ja säteilyn välinen vaihtelu (NDI) ja neutriinojen nopeuden vaihtelu suhteessa säteilyn keskimääräiseen nopeuteen (NVI). Väitöskirjan tuloksena esitetään, että yksinkertainen inflaatiomalli riittää selittämään havaitut CMB mittaukset ja niistä johdetut arviot isokurvatuurihäiriöiden suuruudelle. CDI, NDI tai NVI häiriöiden lisääminen kosmologiseen malliin, ei lisää mallin todennäköisyyttä verrattuna yksinkertaiseen adiabaattiseen häiriömalliin.

The first quarter of the 20th century witnessed a rebirth of cosmology, study of our Universe, as a field of scientific research with testable theoretical predictions. The amount of available cosmological data grew slowly from a few galaxy redshift measurements, rotation curves and local light element abundances into the first detection of the cos- mic microwave background (CMB) in 1965. By the turn of the century the amount of data exploded incorporating fields of new, exciting cosmological observables such as lensing, Lyman alpha forests, type Ia supernovae, baryon acoustic oscillations and Sunyaev-Zeldovich regions to name a few. -- CMB, the ubiquitous afterglow of the Big Bang, carries with it a wealth of cosmological information. Unfortunately, that information, delicate intensity variations, turned out hard to extract from the overall temperature. Since the first detection, it took nearly 30 years before first evidence of fluctuations on the microwave background were presented. At present, high precision cosmology is solidly based on precise measurements of the CMB anisotropy making it possible to pinpoint cosmological parameters to one-in-a-hundred level precision. The progress has made it possible to build and test models of the Universe that differ in the way the cosmos evolved some fraction of the first second since the Big Bang. -- This thesis is concerned with the high precision CMB observations. It presents three selected topics along a CMB experiment analysis pipeline. Map-making and residual noise estimation are studied using an approach called destriping. The studied approximate methods are invaluable for the large datasets of any modern CMB experiment and will undoubtedly become even more so when the next generation of experiments reach the operational stage. -- We begin with a brief overview of cosmological observations and describe the general relativistic perturbation theory. Next we discuss the map-making problem of a CMB experiment and the characterization of residual noise present in the maps. In the end, the use of modern cosmological data is presented in the study of an extended cosmological model, the correlated isocurvature fluctuations. Current available data is shown to indicate that future experiments are certainly needed to provide more information on these extra degrees of freedom. Any solid evidence of the isocurvature modes would have a considerable impact due to their power in model selection. Väitöskirjassa tarkastellaan kosmisen mikroaaltotaustan (cosmic microwave background, CMB) mittaamista ja analysointia. Modernien mittausten tuottamat informaatiomäärät ovat niin suuria, että niiden täysimittainen hyödyntäminen muodostaa haastavan tieteellisen ongelman. Informaation oikeaoppinen käsittely poistaa datasta merkityksettömiä vapausasteita (kohinaa) ja suotuisissa olosuhteissa pienentää jatkoanalysoitavan informaation määrää useilla kertaluokilla. Tässä tutkimuksessa työskennellään mikroaaltotaustamittauksista laskettavien taivaankarttojen, niissä jäljellä olevan instrumenttikohinan ja kosmologisten parametrien piirissä. Työmenetelminä käytetään erilaisia tilastollisia työkaluja, joilla taivaanmittauksen aikajärjestetystä informaatiosta erotellaan korreloitunut kohinakomponentti. Työn toisessa osassa tutkitaan jäljelle jääneen korreloituneen kohinan vaikutusta taivaankarttoihin ja niiden myöhempään analyysiin. Työn seurauksena kehitetty työkalu kohinan tilastollisen kuvauksen laskemiseksi on välttämätön nykyaikaisen mittauksen analyysissä. Kolmannessa osassa esitellään erään laajennetun kosmologisen mallin parametrien määritys nykyaikaisesta, koko taivaan kattavasta mittauksesta. Nykyisin saatavilla olevan datan osoitetaan hiuksen hienosti suosivan tarkasteltua, laajennettua mallia yli standardin kosmologisen mallin. Tämä tekee paraikaa käynnistyvästä Euroopan avaruusjärjestön Planck-satelliittimittauksesta erityisen mielenkiintoisen.

The increased accuracy in the cosmological observations, especially in the measurements of the comic microwave background, allow us to study the primordial perturbations in grater detail. In this thesis, we allow the possibility for a correlated isocurvature perturbations alongside the usual adiabatic perturbations. Thus far the simplest six parameter \Lambda CDM model has been able to accommodate all the observational data rather well. However, we find that the 3-year WMAP data and the 2006 Boomerang data favour a nonzero nonadiabatic contribution to the CMB angular power sprctrum. This is primordial isocurvature perturbation that is positively correlated with the primordial curvature perturbation. Compared with the adiabatic \Lambda CMD model we have four additional parameters describing the increased complexity if the primordial perturbations. Our best-fit model has a 4% nonadiabatic contribution to the CMB temperature variance and the fit is improved by \Delta\chi^2 = 9.7. We can attribute this preference for isocurvature to a feature in the peak structure of the angular power spectrum, namely, the widths of the second and third acoustic peak. Along the way, we have improved our analysis methods by identifying some issues with the parametrisation of the primordial perturbation spectra and suggesting ways to handle these. Due to the improvements, the convergence of our Markov chains is improved. The change of parametrisation has an effect on the MCMC analysis because of the change in priors. We have checked our results against this and find only marginal differences between our parametrisation. Kosmologisten havaintojen määrä ja tarkkuus on huomattavasti kasvanut viime vuosien aikana. Tämä on erityisen huomattavaa kosmisen mikroaaltotaustan mittauksissa. Paremman tarkkuuden ansiosta nykyään on mahdollista tutkia varhaisen maailmankaikkeuden energiatiheyden häiriöiden tilastollista jakaumaa huomattavasti tarkemmin. Yksinkertaisimmissa kosmologisissa malleissa varhaisessa maailmankaikkeudessa on vain adiabaattisia eli kaarevuushäiriöitä. Väitöskirjassa tutkimme mahdollisuutta toisen tyyppiseen häiriöön, niin kutsuttuun isokurvatuurihäiriöön. Analyysimme perusteella varhaisen maailmankaikkeuden tiheyshäiriöt ovat pääosin adiabaattisia, mutta mukana on myös pieni isokurvatuuri-komponentti. Tämän havainnon mukaan niiden fysikaalisten prosessien, jotka tuottavat nämä pienet häiriöt varhaisessa maailmankaikkeudessa, täytyy olla hiukan monipuolisempia kuin puhtaasti adiabaattiset mallit sallisivat.

Acceleration of the universe has been established but not explained. During the past few years precise cosmological experiments have confirmed the standard big bang scenario of a flat universe undergoing an inflationary expansion in its earliest stages, where the perturbations are generated that eventually form into galaxies and other structure in matter, most of which is non-baryonic dark matter. Curiously, the universe has presently entered into another period of acceleration. Such a result is inferred from observations of extra-galactic supernovae and is independently supported by the cosmic microwave background radiation and large scale structure data. It seems there is a positive cosmological constant speeding up the universal expansion of space. Then the vacuum energy density the constant describes should be about a dozen times the present energy density in visible matter, but particle physics scales are enormously larger than that. This is the cosmological constant problem, perhaps the greatest mystery of contemporary cosmology. In this thesis we will explore alternative agents of the acceleration. Generically, such are called dark energy. If some symmetry turns off vacuum energy, its value is not a problem but one needs some dark energy. Such could be a scalar field dynamically evolving in its potential, or some other exotic constituent exhibiting negative pressure. Another option is to assume that gravity at cosmological scales is not well described by general relativity. In a modified theory of gravity one might find the expansion rate increasing in a universe filled by just dark matter and baryons. Such possibilities are taken here under investigation. The main goal is to uncover observational consequences of different models of dark energy, the emphasis being on their implications for the formation of large-scale structure of the universe. Possible properties of dark energy are investigated using phenomenological paramaterizations, but several specific models are also considered in detail. Difficulties in unifying dark matter and dark energy into a single concept are pointed out. Considerable attention is on modifications of gravity resulting in second order field equations. It is shown that in a general class of such models the viable ones represent effectively the cosmological constant, while from another class one might find interesting modifications of the standard cosmological scenario yet allowed by observations. The thesis consists of seven research papers preceded by an introductory discussion. Universumin laajenemisen kiihtyminen on näytetty toteen, mutta sitä ei ole selitetty. Täsmälliset kosmologiset kokeet ovat vahvistaneet, että elämme alkuräjähdysteorian mukaisessa maailmankaikkeudessa, missä aikaisen inflaation häiriöt ovat kehittyneet galakseiksi ja muuksi rakenteeksi materiassa, josta suurin osa on pimeää ainetta. Nykyisten havaintojen perusteella tapahtumain kulkuun on luettava myöhäisempikin inflaatio, ja tuntemattomiin tekijöihin on lisättävä sen aiheuttaja, pimeä energia. Yksinkertaisin selitys olisi kosmologinen vakio, mutta silloin tämän vakion tulisi olla tavattomasti pienempi kuin fysiikan perusteorioiden arvellaan ennustavan. Pimeää energiaa usein kuvataan skalaarikentällä tai muulla aineella, jonka energiatiheys muuttuu hitaasti muttei alati pysyttele vakiona. Vaihtoehtoisesti voidaan universumin kiihtyminen mallintaa muuntamalla painovoimalakeja kosmologissa mittakaavoissa. Tässä väitöskirjassa tarkastellaan erilaisia pimeän energian malleja, erityisesti silmälläpitäen niiden havaittavia seuraamuksia. Häiriöteoreettisten laskelmien merkitystä tähdennetään. Laajennetaan pimeän energian malleja huomioiden mahdollinen fluidin anisotrooppisuus. Tutkitaan, miten pimeän energian mahdollisia ominaisuuksia voidaan rajoittaa vertaamalla teoreettisia ennusteita kosmisen taustasäteilyn ja materiajakauman suuren skaalan rakenteen mittauksiin. Näin voidaan osoittaa, että useat pimeän aineen ja pimeän energian vuorovaikutuksiin perustuvat mallit eivät johda havaitunkaltaiseen rakenteeseen. Väitöskirjassa tarkastellaan myös yleisen suhteellisuusteorian laajennuksia, soveltaen eri variaatiomenetelmiä. Teoreettisista syistä eniten huomiota kiinnitetään kenttäyhtälöiden kertaluvun säilyttäviin laajennuksiin. Niiden todetaan joissain tapauksissa olevan mielenkiintoisia pimeän energian ongelman kannalta. Väitöskirja koostuu seitsemästä tutkimusartikkelista ja niiden aihepiiriin johdattelevasta yleiskatsauksesta.
