2. Further evidence for the decay k+ → π+νν̄

Abstract

The rare kaon decay K+→π+νν̄ was observed in a data set with comparable sensitivity. The observable signature for K+→π+νν̄ decay from kaons involved the π+ track and π+ decay products. The maximum pion momentum from K+→π+νν̄ decay at rest was found to be 227 MeV/c.

Abstract

We made radiation test of an electric motor of a rotation target at Takasaki Advanced Radiation Research Institute. In the view point of the radiation, the electric motor is one of possible weak points of the rotation target. We prepared a commercially available small rotation target with an electric motor. The target was irradiated with 0.63 MGy in the Co-60 gamma-ray irradiation facilities. The dose of 0.63 MGy corresponds to about one ILC (International Linear Collider) year at the electric motor of the ILC positron production target. After the irradiation we tested the rotation of the target and no problem was found.

Abstract

We present a Next-to-Leading order perturbative QCD analysis of world data on the spin dependent structure functions $g_1^p, g_1^n$, and $g_1^d$, including the new experimental information on the $Q^2$ dependence of $g_1^n$. Careful attention is paid to the experimental and theoretical uncertainties. The data constrain the first moments of the polarized valence quark distributions, but only qualitatively constrain the polarized sea quark and gluon distributions. The NLO results are used to determine the $Q^2$ dependence of the ratio $g_1/F_1$ and evolve the experimental data to a constant $Q^2 = 5 GeV^2$. We determine the first moments of the polarized structure functions of the proton and neutron and find agreement with the Bjorken sum rule., Comment: 21 pages, 4 figures; final version to be published in Phys. Abstract

International audience; One of the main challenges for the future linear colliders projects (ILC and CLIC) is to design an efficient positron source taking into account the constraints imposed by the target heating. At present, different schemes have been analysed to produce high energy gammas and to convert them in an amorphous target. One of them considers the possibility to boost the energy of the backscattered photons of a laser pulse by Compton effect. This method is very attractive since the source is independent from the main Linac and since the photon helicity is conserved in Compton scattering and subsequently transferred to the produced pairs. This allows the physics experiments disposing of both positron and electron polarised sources. Different schemes have been proposed to provide the electron beam for the Compton collisions. taking into account the constraint imposed by the low value of the Thomson cross section. One of the explored possibilities is to design an ERL with relatively low repetition frequency, high charge per pulse and then to stack the produced positrons in an accumulation ring. Different considerations on this scheme will be illustrated and the main constraints discussed. MO6RFP069

Compton backscattering happens in a so-called "Compton ring" where an electron beam of 1.06 GeV interacts with a powerful laser beam amplified in an optical resonator. The circularly-polarized gamma rays are sent on to a target, producing pairs of longitudinally polarized electrons and positrons. An Adiabatic Matching Device maximizes the capture of the positrons. A normal-conducting 2 GHz Linac accelerates the beam up to 2.424 GeV before injection into the Pre-Damping Ring (PDR). The nominal CLIC bunch population is 4.4x10**9 particles per bunch. Since the photon flux coming out from a "Compton ring" is not sufficient to obtain the requested charge, a stacking process is required in the PDR. Another option is to use a "Compton Energy Recovery Linac" where a quasi-continual stacking in the PDR could be achieved. A third option is to use a "Compton Linac" which would not require stacking. We describe the overall scheme as well as advantages and constraints of the three different options.

Abstract

International audience; The Compton positron source of a future linear collider must obtain the target bunch population by accumulating a large number of positron packets, arriving either in a number of bursts from a “Compton ring”, with intermediate damping of the scattering electron beam, or quasi-continually from a “Compton energy recovery linac”. We present simulation results for the longitudinal stacking of Compton positrons in the ILC damping ring and the CLIC pre-damping ring, reporting parameter optimization, stacking efficiency, possible further improvements, and outstanding questions.

Abstract

For achieving the high luminosity required at the International Linear Collider (ILC), it is critical to focus the beams to nanometer size with the ILC Beam Delivery System (BDS), and to maintain the beam collision with a nanometer-scale stability. To establish the technologies associated with this ultra-high precision beam handling, it has been proposed to implement an ILC-like final focus optics in an extension of the existing extraction beamline of ATF at KEK. The ATF is considered to be the best platform for this exercise, since it provides an adequate ultra-low emittance electron beam in a manner dedicated to the development of ILC. The two major goals for this facility, called ATF2, are : (A) Achievement of a 37 nm beam size, and (B) control of beam position down to 2 nm level. The scientific justification for the ATF2 project and its technical design have been described in Volume 1 of the ATF2 Proposal [1]. We present here Volume 2 of the ATF2 Proposal, in which we present specifics of the construction plans and the group organization to execute the research programs at ATF2. The sections in this report have been authored by relevant ATF2 subgroups within the International ATF Collaboration. The time line of the project is described in Section 2. Section 3 discuss the structure of the international collaboration. Sections 4 and 5 discuss budget considerations, which are presented as well as the design and construction tasks to be shared by the internationalcollaboration at ATF2. Concluding remarks have been contributed by Dr. Ewan Paterson, Chair of the International Collaboration Board of the ATF collaboration. Abstract

We report on the smallest vertical emittance achieved in single-bunch-mode operation of the ATF. The emittances were measured with a laser-wire beam-profile monitor installed in the damping ring. The bunch length and the momentum spread of the beam were also recorded under the same conditions. The smallest vertical rms emittance measured is 4 pm in the limit of zero current. It increases by a factor of 1.5 for a bunch intensity of 10^10 electrons. There are no discrepancies between the measured data and the calculations of intra-beam scattering.

Abstract

Electron beams with the lowest, normalized transverse emittance recorded so far were produced and confirmed in single-bunch-mode operation of the Accelerator Test Facility at KEK. We established a tuning method of the damping ring which achieves a small vertical dispersion and small x-y orbit coupling. The vertical emittance was less than $1%$ of the horizontal emittance. At the zero-intensity limit, the vertical normalized emittance was less than $2.8\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}8}\mathrm{rad}\mathrm{m}$ at beam energy 1.3 GeV. At high intensity, strong effects of intrabeam scattering were observed, which had been expected in view of the extremely high particle density due to the small transverse emittance.

Abstract

The article of record as published may be found at https://doi.org/10.1016/S0370-2693(02)03015-0 We have measured the spin structure functions g2p and g2d and the virtual photon asymmetries A2p and A2d over the kinematic range 0.02 < x < 0.8 and 0.7 < Q^2 < 20 GeV^2 by scattering 29.1 and 32.3 GeV longitudinally polarized electrons from transversely polarized NH3 and 6LiD targets. Our measured g2 approximately follows the twist-2 Wandzura-Wilczek calculation. The twist-3 reduced matrix elements d2p and d2n are less than two standard deviations from zero. The data are inconsistent with the Burkhardt-Cottingham sum rule if there is no pathological behavior as x->0. The Efremov-Leader-Teryaev integral is consistent with zero within our measured kinematic range. The absolute value of A2 is significantly smaller than the sqrt[R(1+A1)/2] limit.

Abstract

The rare kaon decay K+→π+νν̄ was observed in a data set with comparable sensitivity. The observable signature for K+→π+νν̄ decay from kaons involved the π+ track and π+ decay products. The maximum pion momentum from K+→π+νν̄ decay at rest was found to be 227 MeV/c.

Abstract

KEK-ATF is studying the low-emittance multi-bunch electron beam for the future linear collider. In ATF, thermionic gun is used to generate 20 bunches electron beam with the bunch spacing of 2.8 ns. Due to a distortion of the gun emission and the beam loading effect in the bunching system, the intensity for each bunch is not uniform by up to 40 % at the end of the injector. We have developed a system to correct the gun emission by precisely controlling the cathode voltage with a function generator. For the beam loading effect, we have introduced RF amplitude modulation on Sub Harmonic Buncher, SHB. By these technique, bunch intensity uniformity was improved and beam transmission for later bunches was recovered from 67% to 91%, but intensity for first five bunches is still lower than others., Comment: HEACC01 proceedings

Abstract

KEK-ATF is studying low emittance, multi-bunch electron beam for the future linear collider. The energy instability of the 1.5 GeV linac has been a problem making the beam injection to the damping ring unstable. Because the unstable beam generates also large amount of the radiation, the beam current is limited by the KEK radiation safety policy much lower than what we expect. Stabilizing the S-band linac is therefore important not only to improve the beam quality, but also to clear the radiation safety limit to start the multi-bunch operation. We have made various modifications to solve the problem on the electron gun, modulator, klystron etc. For the modulator, we have developed a feed-forward controlled De-Q module. This module compensates the voltage jitter by controlling the deQ timing with a feed-forward circuit because the amount of the excessive charge up is strongly correlated to the charge up slope that can be measured prior to the deQ timing. The energy stability was examined and was improved by a factor of 3, from 0.6% to 0.2% of itself. Modification for the feed-forward circuit to get more stability was made. The test for the new circuit is in progress. For the long term instability, phase-lock system for klystron RF is being installed. Abstract

Measurements were made at SLAC of the cross section for scattering 29 GeV electrons from carbon at a laboratory angle of 4.58, corresponding to 0.03-x-0.1 and 1.3-Q2-2.7 GeV2. Values of RssLrsT were extracted in this kinematic range by comparing these data to cross sections measured at a higher beam energy by the NMC collaboration. The results are in reasonable agreement with pQCD calculations and with extrapolations of the R1990 parameterization of previous data. Abstract

Measurements are reported of the proton and deuteron spin structure functions g1 at beam energies of 29.1, 16.2, and 9.7 GeV and g2 at a beam energy of 29.1 GeV. The integrals of g1 over x have been evaluated at fixed Q**2 = 3 (GeV/c)**2 using the full data set. The Q**2 dependence of the ratio g1/F1 was studied and found to be small for Q**2 > 1 (GeV/c)**2. Within experimental precision the g2 data are well-described by the Wandzura-Wilczek twist-2 contribution. Twist-3 matrix elements were extracted and compared to theoretical predictions. The asymmetry A2 was measured and found to be significantly smaller than the positivity limit for both proton and deuteron targets. A2 for the proton is found to be positive and inconsistent with zero. Measurements of g1 in the resonance region show strong variations with x and Q**2, consistent with resonant amplitudes extracted from unpolarized data. These data allow us to study the Q**2 dependence of the first moments of g1 below the scaling region.

Abstract

We have measured the proton and deuteron spin structure functions g[sup p][sub 1] and g[sup d][sub 1] in the region of the nucleon resonances for W2 < 5GeV2 and Q2(similar, equals)0.5 and Q2(similar, equals)1.2GeV2 by inelastically scattering 9.7 GeV polarized electrons off polarized 15NH3 and 15ND3 targets. We observe significant structure in g[sup p][sub 1] in the resonance region. We have used the present results, together with the deep-inelastic data at higher W2, to extract Gamma (Q2)(equivalent)01 g1(x,Q2)dx. This is the first information on the low-Q2 evolution of Gamma toward the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn limit at Q2 = 0.

The nucleon spin structure functions g1 and g2 have been and continue to be intensively studied via deep- inelastic lepton scattering [1–6]; however, they remain largely undetermined in the resonance region, where the squared invariant mass of the final state W2 is less than 4 GeV2.

Abstract

The ratio g1/F1 has been measured over the range 0.031 (GeV/c)2. A trend is observed for g1/F1 to decrease at lower Q2. Fits to world data with and without a possible Q2-dependence in g1/F1 are in agreement with the Bjorken sum rule, but Delta_q is substantially less than the quark-parton model expectation.

Abstract

We report on a high-statistics measurement of'. the deuteron spin structure function g(di) at a beam energy of 29 GeV in the kinematic range 0.029 < x < 0.8 and 1 < Q2 < IO (GeV / c) (2) • The integral r(di) = f(1o) g(di) dx evaluated at fixed Q2 = 3 (GeV/c) 2 gives 0.042 ± 0.003(stat) ± 0.004(syst). Combining this result with our earlier measurement of g(di), we find r(pi) - r(nt) = 0.163 ± O.OIO(stat) ± 0.016(syst), which agrees with the prediction of the Bjorken sum rule with O(a(3x)) corrections, r(pi) - r(ni) = 0.171 ± 0.008. We find the quark contribution to the proton helicity to be liq = 0.30 ± 0.06. Abstract

Abstract

We have measured the neutron structure function g$_{2}^{n}$ and the virtual photon-nucleon asymmetry A$_{2}^{n}$ over the kinematic range $0.014\leq x \leq 0.7$ and $1.0 \leq Q^{2} \leq 17.0$ by scattering 48.3 GeV longitudinally polarized electrons from polarized $^{3}$He. Results for A$_{2}^{n}$ are significantly smaller than the $\sqrt{R}$ positivity limit over most of the measured range and data for g$_2^{n}$ are generally consistent with the twist-2 Wandzura-Wilczek prediction. Using our measured g$_{2}^{n}$ we obtain results for the twist-3 reduced matrix element $d_{2}^{n}$, and the integral $\int$g$_{2}^{n}(x)dx$ in the range $0.014\leq x \leq 1.0$. Data from this experiment are combined with existing data for g$_{2}^{n}$ to obtain an average for $d_{2}^{n}$ and the integral $\int$g$_{2}^{n}(x)dx$., Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures.
