Most of our daily life behaviours are affected by culture and regional differences in behaviours are often guided by local cultural factors. The rising field of cultural neuroscience points towards the complex effects of culture on the neurobiological underpinnings of behaviour, including substance use and abuse. While there is substantial evidence that cognitive processes play a role in substance use disorder and that cultural factors could influence both behaviour and brain processes, no research has been conducted to assess how cultural factors play a role in the cognitive processes underlying substance use. In this study we assessed the association between WM performance and related brain activity and how cultural attitudes towards cannabis use affect these associations in (near-)daily cannabis users from Texas (TX-US) and the Netherlands (NL).
