Abstract

The emergence of large-scale replication projects yielding successful rates substantially lower than expected caused the behavioural, cognitive, and social sciences to experience a so-called ‘replication crisis’. In this Perspective, we reframe this ‘crisis’ through the lens of a credibility revolution, focusing on positive structural, procedural and community-driven changes. Second, we outline a path to expand ongoing advances and improvements. The credibility revolution has been an impetus to several substantive changes which will have a positive, long-term impact on our research environment.

Abstract

Study preregistration has become increasingly popular in psychology, but its effectiveness in restricting potentially biasing researcher degrees of freedom remains unclear. We used an extensive protocol to assess the strictness of preregistrations and the consistency between preregistration and publications of 300 preregistered psychology studies. We found that preregistrations often lack methodological details and that undisclosed deviations from preregistered plans are frequent. Combining the strictness and consistency results highlights that biases due to researcher degrees of freedom are prevalent and likely in many preregistered studies. More comprehensive registration templates typically yielded stricter and hence better preregistrations. We did not find that effectiveness of preregistrations differed over time or between original and replication studies. Furthermore, we found that operationalizations of variables were generally more effectively preregistered than other study parts. Inconsistencies between preregistrations and published studies were mainly encountered for data collection procedures, statistical models, and exclusion criteria. Our results indicate that, to unlock the full potential of preregistration, researchers in psychology should aim to write stricter preregistrations, adhere to these preregistrations more faithfully, and more transparently report any deviations from the preregistrations. This could be facilitated by training and education to improve preregistration skills, as well as the development of more comprehensive templates.

Abstract

Above-and-below-average effects are well-known phenomena that arise when comparing oneself to others. Kruger (1999) found that people rate themselves as above average for easy abilities and below average for difficult abilities. We conducted a successful pre-registered replication of Kruger’s (1999) Study 1, the first demonstration of the core phenomenon (N = 756, US MTurk workers). Extending the replication to also include a between-subject design, we added two conditions manipulating easy and difficult interpretations of the original ability domains, and with an additional dependent variable measuring perceived difficulty. We observed an above-average-effect in the easy extension and below-average-effect in the difficult extension, compared to the neutral replication condition. Both extension conditions were perceived as less ambiguous than the original neutral condition. Overall, we conclude strong empirical support for Kruger’s above-and-below-average effects, with boundary conditions laid out in the extensions expanding both generalizability and robustness of the phenomenon.

5. Bio-psycho-social factors’ associations with brain age: a large-scale UK Biobank diffusion study of 35,749 participants

Abstract

Brain age refers to age predicted by brain features. Brain age has previously been associated with various health and disease outcomes and suggested as a potential biomarker of general health. Few previous studies have systematically assessed brain age variability derived from single and multi-shell diffusion magnetic resonance imaging data. Here, we present multivariate models of brain age derived from various diffusion approaches and how they relate to bio-psycho-social variables within the domains of sociodemographic, cognitive, life-satisfaction, as well as health and lifestyle factors in midlife to old age (N = 35,749, 44.6–82.8 years of age). Bio-psycho-social factors could uniquely explain a small proportion of the brain age variance, in a similar pattern across diffusion approaches: cognitive scores, life satisfaction, health and lifestyle factors adding to the variance explained, but not socio-demographics. Consistent brain age associations across models were found for waist-to-hip ratio, diabetes, hypertension, smoking, matrix puzzles solving, and job and health satisfaction and perception. Furthermore, we found large variability in sex and ethnicity group differences in brain age. Our results show that brain age cannot be sufficiently explained by bio-psycho-social variables alone. However, the observed associations suggest to adjust for sex, ethnicity, cognitive factors, as well as health and lifestyle factors, and to observe bio-psycho-social factor interactions’ influence on brain age in future studies. publishedVersion

These questions are related to their thesis (either Bachelor or Master thesis).

Abstract

This study is set out to explore students’ knowledge of responsible research practices (RRPs) and questionable research practices (QRPs), as well as attitudes towards RRPs and QRPs and their usage. RRPs can be defined as a set of practices to increase the quality of research by making it more rigeros, accessible and transparent. However, RRPs are not only focussed on or a guarantee for transparency as they have different foci and can be applied and combined independently from each other. Moreover, RRPs involve a broad spectrum of practices promoted by a community of researchers who want to reduce QRPs and increase scientific rigor. The spectrum stretches from minimal reporting standards, as defined by the American Psychological Association (APA) to a conceptual understanding of statistics, openness, and transparency. This study will help to establish a baseline understanding of the current situation at North European (Norwegian, German, British) universities and might support educators develop their syllabus when teaching statistics and research methods in higher education. It may also be used to raise student awareness of these issues.

Abstract

© The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Limited 2021, corrected publication 2022, The COVID-19 pandemic has increased negative emotions and decreased positive emotions globally. Left unchecked, these emotional changes might have a wide array of adverse impacts. To reduce negative emotions and increase positive emotions, we tested the effectiveness of reappraisal, an emotion-regulation strategy that modifies how one thinks about a situation. Participants from 87 countries and regions (n = 21,644) were randomly assigned to one of two brief reappraisal interventions (reconstrual or repurposing) or one of two control conditions (active or passive). Results revealed that both reappraisal interventions (vesus both control conditions) consistently reduced negative emotions and increased positive emotions across different measures. Reconstrual and repurposing interventions had similar effects. Importantly, planned exploratory analyses indicated that reappraisal interventions did not reduce intentions to practice preventive health behaviours. Abstract

Semantic priming has been studied for nearly 50 years across various experimental manipulations and theoretical frameworks. These studies provide insight into the cognitive underpinnings of semantic representations in both healthy and clinical populations; however, they have suffered from several issues including generally low sample sizes and a lack of diversity in linguistic implementations. Here, we will test the size and the variability of the semantic priming effect across ten languages by creating a large database of semantic priming values, based on an adaptive sampling procedure. Differences in response latencies between related word-pair conditions and unrelated word-pair conditions (i.e., difference score confidence interval is greater than zero) will allow quantifying evidence for semantic priming, whereas improvements in model fit with the addition of a random intercept for language will provide support for variability in semantic priming across languages.

13. Ageing, Grey Matter Loss and Resting-State Effective Connectivity

Abstract

Aldring påvirker kroppen på forskjellige måter. Ikke-patologisk aldring karakteriseres av asymmetrisk tap av grå materie, som påvirker den tjukkere hemisfæren sterkere (Roe et al., 2021). Det er ukjent hvordan disse strukturelle forandringene kan relateres til intrinsisk aktivitet som måles med «resting state» funksjonell magnetresonanstomografi (fMRI). Derfor undersøkte vi sammenhengen mellom sannsynlighetsverdier for grå materie (GMPV) og effektiv konnektivet (EC). De observerte dataene inneholder to tidspunkter, T5 og T6, fra det longitudinelle BETULA prosjektet (N = 227). Canonical Correlation Analysis indikerer relasjoner mellom EC og GMPV innom Default Mode Network og Central Executive Network. Sammenhengen mellom EC og GMPV ble spesifisert ved hjelp av generalized additive models. I tillegg fant vi forskjeller i EC mellom T5 og T6, fra venstre dorsal Prefrontal Cortex til høyre medial Temporal Gyrus og høyre Prefrontal Cortex til venstre Precuneus. Videre predikerte GMPV EC bedre enn kronologisk alder. Sammenhengen mellom strukturell og funksjonell lateralisering i de aktuelle dataene var svak.
