WOS: 000428114800010 One of the most important environmental problems is municipal solid waste management (MSWM) as a result of the rapid rise in waste generation due to industrialization, economic development, urbanization, and rapid population growth in Turkey. The collection, transportation, and disposal of solid waste are conducted by municipal authorities of Turkey. The waste management problem is getting more serious due to some reasons such as lack of enforcement of regulations, weak technical and financial resources, poor infrastructure, insufficient policies and deficiency of political priorities, poor coordination between authorities. Hence, despite the legislation, municipal solid wastes are managed in an unscientific manner by the municipalities. The SWOT analysis is a perfect tool to discover the possibilities and ways for successfully implementing the MSWM. In this study, SWOT analysis carried out both negative and positive concerns of MSWM. A successful strategic management has been identified from the SWOT analysis for the municipal solid wastes. Further, the study proposes options based on SWOT analysis approach to improve in available waste management practices that could also be adopted by other countries to decrease the adverse effect of MSW on human and environment health.

Objective: The aim of this study was to examine validity and reliability of Turkish version of Yale Food Addiction Scale (YFAS) among Turkish bariatric surgery patients. Methods: The YFAS scale was administered to obese patients (n=171) who were seeking or underwent bariatric surgery. Construct validity of the scale was evaluated with factor analysis and reliability was evaluated with item-total score correlation and repeatability were tested by intraclass correlation (ICC) analysis between test-retest results. Results: Internal concistency was found adequate Kuder-Richardson Formula 20 coefficient (KR-20) 0.822, and Cronbach’s alpha 0.859 for the entire 25-item YFAS. As Bartlett's Test of Sphericity was significant, the factor model developed in the present study was decided appro-priate. Factor analysis extracted six factor in Turkish YFAS that explained for 67.51% of the total variance. Item total correlation coefficients of scale ranged from 0.214-0.666. Conclusion: Our findings support the use of the Turkish YFAS as a reliable measure of food addiction among bariatric surgery patients. © 2015, Cukurova University, Faculty of Medicine. Background Venous thromboembolism (VT) increases mortality and morbidity in cancer patients. The primary aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of VT on the survival of cancer patients and its relationship with serum vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and plasma factor VIII levels. Patients and methods Eighty-two patients with locally advanced or metastatic cancer were included in this study between September 2001 and March 2004, and 31 of them had VT. Fifty-one matched-paired cancer patients without VT were prospectively selected as a control group in the same period. Criteria for the selection of control group patients were having the same malignancy, stage, metastatic site, performance status and age (±5 years) as patients in the VT group. Results Plasma factor VIII and serum D-dimer levels in the VT group were significantly higher than those in the control group (p=0.030 and p=0.016, respectively). However, mean serum VEGF levels were similar in both groups (p=0.199). In the VT group, the median survival of patients who had higher serum VEGF levels (>150 pg/mL) was significantly shorter than that of patients in the same group with lower serum VEGF levels (p=0.005). The median survival of the VT group was 14 months, whereas it was 25 months in the control group (p=0.199). Conclusion There was a worse prognostic trend for cancer patients with VT. Nevertheless, the difference in survival was not statistically significant between the groups. Plasma factor VIII and serum D-dimer levels might have prognostic value in cancer patients with VT. Cancer patients with VT and higher serum VEGF levels had a significantly poorer prognosis.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the reliability and validity of Turkish Version of the Night Eating Questionnaire (NEQ) in psychiatric out-patient population as a measure of severity of the night eating syn-drome (NES). Methods: We examined the factor structure, internal consistency and validity of the NEQ in Turkish. First, we translated NEQ into Turkish and than back-translation into English; correction and semantic adaptation and assessment of the understanding of the questionnaire. We made the diagnosis of NES according to psychiatric examination. We administered the NEQ in 433 patients and the re-test in 141 participants two weeks later. Result: The instrument showed satisfactory internal consistency with an overall Cronbach ? of 0.69. Intraclass correlation for the test re-test total score was 0.96. The ninety seven patients had NES with psychiatric examination. The area under ROC curve defined as 0,904. For cutt-of point of 18 in NEQ both sensitivity and spesificity were as 90.7% and 73.8%. The confirmatory factor analysis of the NEQ yielded a similar four factor solution as the original scale. Conclusions: We found that Turkish version of NEQ is valid and has good diagnostical performance, and high internal consistency.

Objective: The exposure to negative acts at work is one of the main issues highlighted adverse health effects within the scope of work life's psychosocial dimension. Mobbing is defined as both the most common one among the causes of stress being at work, and also more devastating and damaging than the other stressors of the work. The aim of the present study was to examine the reliability of the Turkish version of the Negative Act Questionnaire (NAQ-TR). Methods: The questionnaire was first translated into Turkish and then back translated into English and the equivalence of both versions was determined. An expert group analyzed the formulation of the translated items and they redrafted some of them according to agreedon criteria. Subsequently, it was administered to 456 workers from 11 different workplaces. The factor structure and internal consistency of the NAQ-TR was examined. Result: The instrument showed satisfactory internal consistency with an overall Cronbach ? of 0.912. The factor analysis, as opposed to the original scale, yielded four factor solution (Personal bullying and isolation, Work-related bullying, destabilization and excessive workload). We found that NAQ-TR has high internal consistency. Conclusions: The Turkish version of NAQ was found to be reliable for mobbing in workplace. It can be used in epidemylogic trials.

Objective: Acute myocardial infarction (MI) has significant and detrimental effects on the lifestyles of the patients. It has been shown that quality of life (QoL) in patients with MI is impaired in every aspect. This study aims to evaluate the impact of depression and physical comorbidity on QoL in Turkish patients with acute first MI. Method: This multi-center cross-sectional study was carried out in 15 centers with 998 patients hospitalized for acute first MI. For detection of depression, Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) was used. For evaluation of QoL, World Health Organization Quality of Life Questionnaire (WHOQOL) was applied. Results: The mean age of the patients was 57.5 +/- 10.1 years and 79.2 % (n = 792) of the patients were men. Patients with comorbid depression (BDI >= 10) and comorbid medical conditions, and female patients had significantly lower scores in every domain of WHOQOL. In the regression analysis model, female gender, low education, comorbid medical conditions, especially comorbid hypertension, and BDI score were found to have a significant effect on the domains of WHOQOL. Conclusions: Female patients are more prone to impairment in quality of life after myocardial infarction. Both comorbid medical conditions and depression have a significant impact on the impairment of QoL in Turkish patients with acute MI. In order to improve the subjective wellbeing of post MI patients, both psychiatric and physical comorbidities must be detected and managed even in the short term.

We presented a case that had self-amputated his penis partly, performed bilateral selforchiectomy and then committed suicide. The case was a-80-year-old male with a urinary catheter for the last year for an urologic problem, who was using alprazolam for a psychiatric disorder. He had history of attempted suicide, one year ago. The victim was found by his wife hanged to the balcony railing. Distal 1/2 part of his penis was amputated and the penis amputate was found beside the body, as well as both of his testicles. In the autopsy examination, macroscopic examination of the amputated items revealed penile ecchymosis around the cut side of the skin and benign prostate hypertrophy and chronic prostatitis was diagnosed with microscopic examination of the prostate gland. The paper discussed the characteristics of the victim and the manner of the presented case; a genital self-amputation case followed by suicide or a failed suicide case completed by hanging method (a complex suicide case). © 2012 by Türkiye Klinikleri.

Objective: This study evaluated the clinical and sociodemographic features associated with concurrent Axis I psychiatric disorders among adult psychiatric outpatients with panic disorder (PD) with or without agoraphobia (AG). Method: This was a retrospective chart review study of 12.980 patients treated for any psychiatric disorders in psychiatric outpatient clinics. Diagnoses of comorbid disorders were determined in a sample of 478 patients with panic disorder as defined in DSM-IV. The subjects were divided into two groups: patients panic disorder with AG (n=221) and panic disorder without AG (n=254). Sociodemographic variables, illness characteristics such as symptoms, duration of illnes and family history of psychiatric disorders were evaluated. Results: Panic disorder was prevalent among 3.7 % of the sample. The most common Axis I psychiatric disorders among groups were major depressive disorder (21.7 %) and generalized anxiety disorder (8.9 %). The prevalence of other psychiatric disorders in present study was as follows: social phobia 7.3 %; obsessive-compulsive disorder 4.6 %; posttraumatic stress disorder 4.6 %; eating disorders 1.46 %; alcohol abuse/dependence 4.6 %; somatoform disorders 0.85 %; bipolar disorder 0.6 %; dysthymic disorder 2.3 % and impulse control disorder 0.4 %. Female subjects have higher comorbid conditions compared to males. Those with more concurrent Axis I conditions had longer histories of PD and younger age of onset. © Universitätsverlag Ulm GmbH 2007.

WOS: 000258174200002, The aim of this study is to investigate the relation between the digit length ratio and aggression in 377 individuals aged between 18-24 years. A digital compass was used for anthropometric measurements using standard methods. The StateTrait Anger Scale (STAS) and Aggression Questionnaire (AQ) were used to evaluate the aggression and anger in participants. All individuals were evaluated by SCL-90-R with respect to general psychopathology. Independent samples test, Pearson Correlation Analysis and Multiple Regression Analysis were used for statistical analyses. 2DAD ratio was found to be lower for males than females. There was a positive correlation between 2DAD ratio and physical aggression in males, but not in females. The relation between 2DAD ratio and physical aggression was observed to be weaker when possible psychopathology, which can be detected with SCL-90-R test, was excluded. The results suggest that 2D:4D digit ratio may be used as a method to assess the degree of aggression. However, the digit ratio may not be an ideal biological marker reflecting the brain development.

Postpartum period is a vulnerable period for development of psychiatric disorders. Despite large number of studies focusing on postpartum depression and psychosis, there are few other studies reporting that aggravation or even alleviation of anxiety disorders such as obsessive compulsive disorder in this period. Therefore, the presence of obsessions and/or compulsions should be carefully evaluated among all patients in postpartum period. In this article, the epidemiology, etiology and clinical features of postpartum obsessive compulsive disorder are reviewed and management through cognitive behavioral therapy and pharmacotherapy in comparison with other obsessive compulsive patients are evaluated based on previous literature.

Objective: Recent studies have found a correlation between television viewing and behavior problems in children. This study aimed to examine the extent of children's television-viewing time and its correlation with behavioral problems in a preschool age general population sample. Method: A total of 356 preparatory school students aged 5 to 7 years, were recruited for the study. The questionnaires on children's time spent on watching television, socioeconomic status of family (SES) and the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) were administered to the parents of children's. Results: The overall mean ± SD daily television viewing time was 3.2±1.4 hours. Elevated scores of somatic complaints, depression and anxiety, social problems, thought problems, attention problems, aggressive behaviors, internalization, externalization subscales and total problems were associated with higher television watching times. Overall television viewing time had a positive correlation with social problem, somatic complaints problem, anxious/ depressed problem, internalization, externalization and total problem scores. Conclusion: Television viewing time is positively associated with internalization, externalization and total problems using CBCL in preschool children. Although this study does not suggest that time of the viewing television is one of the most important determinants of children's behavior problems, it indicates that heavy viewing may have a risk of behavioral problems for children. Our findings support the importance of parental monitoring of their children's television watching habits. © Universitätsverlag Ulm GmbH 2006.

Severe depression with suicidal ideation associated with the use of the valsartan, an angiotensin receptor antagonist, is reported. The patient, who was unresponsive to antidepressant medication with two different groups, dramatically recovered following discontinuation of valsartan. Possible mechanisms and related issues of mood changes which caused by angiotensin II receptor antagonists, especially with valsartan are discussed. Clinicians should be aware that valsartan may cause mood changes.

WOS: 000222099200002, PubMed: 15190230, Interferon (IFN) is the most widely prescribed drug of choice for chronic hepatitis B infection, which is a common health problem in our country. Therapy with IFN-alpha may be associated with a number of neuropsychiatric symptoms, such as Parkinsonism, akathisia, seizure, and depressive disorders. In this case report, we present clinical and laboratory findings of a case with chronic hepatitis B that developed acute dystonia soon after the first dose of pegylated interferon alpha. As far as we know, this is the first report in English literature indicating such an adverse effect of pegylated interferon alpha.

To date, no randomized study has compared different doses of recombinant human granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (rhG-CSF) following submyeloablative mobilization chemotherapy. Therefore, we evaluated the effect of different doses of rhG-CSF following mobilization chemotherapy on yields of CD34(+) peripheral blood stem cells (PBSC). Fifty patients were randomized to receive 8 (n = 25) versus 16 mug/kg/d (n = 25) of rhG-CSF following mobilization chemotherapy. The median number of CD34(+) cells collected after 8 mug/kg/d of rhG-CSF was 2.36 x 10(6)/kg (range, 0.21-7.80), compared with 7.99 (2.76-14.89) after 16 mug/kg/d (P < 0.001). Twenty out of 25 (80%) patients in the low-dose and 23 out of 25 (92%) in the high-dose rhG-CSF arm underwent high-dose chemotherapy (RDC) and autologous stein cell transplantation (ASCT). Median days to white blood cell engraftment in patients mobilized with 8 μg/kg and 16 μg/kg of rhG-CSF were 12 (10-20) and 9 (8-11) respectively (P < 0.001). There was no difference between the two groups regarding the other parameters of peritransplant morbidity: days to platelet engraftment (P = 0.10), number of red blood cell (P = 0.56) and platelet transfusions (P = 0.22), days of total parenteral nutrition requirement (P = 0.84), fever (P = 0.93) and antibiotics (P = 0.77), and number of different antibiotics used (P = 0.58). These data showed that higher doses of rhG-CSF following submyeloablative mobilization chemotherapy were associated with a clear dose-response effect based on the collected cell yields. Based on the parameters of peritransplant morbidity, 8 mug/kg/d was as effective as 16 mug/kg/d except for a rapid neutrophil engraftment in the high-dose arm. Therefore, in routine clinical practice, despite some advantage in the use of higher doses of rhG-CSF, lower doses may be used for PBSC collections following chemotherapy-based mobilization regimens in this cost-conscious era.
