This article describes a teaching strategy that synergizes computing and management, aimed at the running of complex projects in industry and academia, in the areas of civil engineering, physics, geosciences, and a number of other related fields. The course derived from this strategy includes four parts: (a) Computing with a selected set of modern paradigms—the stress is on Control Flow and Data Flow computing paradigms, but paradigms conditionally referred to as Energy Flow and Diffusion Flow are also covered; (b) Project management that is holistic—the stress is on the wide plethora of issues spanning from the preparation of project proposals, all the way to incorporation activities to follow after the completion of a successful project; (c) Examples from past research and development experiences—the stress is on experiences of leading experts from academia and industry; (d) Student projects that stimulate creativity—the stress is on methods that educators could use to induce and accelerate the creativity of students in general. Finally, the article ends with selected pearls of wisdom that could be treated as suggestions for further elaboration.

This article presents a taxonomy and represents a repository of open problems in computing for numerically and logically intensive problems in a number of disciplines that have to synergize for the best performance of simulation-based feasibility studies on nature-oriented engineering in general and civil engineering in particular. Topics include but are not limited to: Nature-based construction, genomics supporting nature-based construction, earthquake engineering, and other types of geophysical disaster prevention activities, as well as the studies of processes and materials of interest for the above. In all these fields, problems are discussed that generate huge amounts of Big Data and are characterized with mathematically highly complex Iterative Algorithms. In the domain of applications, it has been stressed that problems could be made less computationally demanding if the number of computing iterations is made smaller (with the help of Artificial Intelligence or Conditional Algorithms), or if each computing iteration is made shorter in time (with the help of Data Filtration and Data Quantization). In the domain of computing, it has been stressed that computing could be made more powerful if the implementation technology is changed (Si, GaAs, etc.…), or if the computing paradigm is changed (Control Flow, Data Flow, etc.…).

The Mermin-Wagner theorem~\cite{Mermin1966} states that long-range {magnetic} order does not exist in one- or two-dimensional (2D) isotropic magnets with short-ranged interactions. The theorem has been a milestone on magnetism and has been driving the research of recently discovered 2D van der waals (vdW) magnetic materials\cite{gong_discovery_2017,firstCrI3} from fundamentals up to potential applications\cite{Genome22}. In such systems, the existence of magnetic ordering is typically attributed to the presence of a significant magnetic anisotropy, which is known to introduce a spin-wave gap and circumvent the core assumption of the theorem\cite{Bogolyubov,Mermin1966,Hohenberg}. Here we show that in finite-size 2D vdW magnets typically found in lab setups ({\it e.g.,} within millimetres), short-range interactions can be large enough to allow the stabilisation of magnetic order at finite temperatures without any magnetic anisotropy for practical implementations. We demonstrate that magnetic ordering can be created in flakes of 2D materials despite of the lattice symmetry due to the intrinsic nature of the spin exchange interactions and finite-size effects in two-dimensions. Surprisingly we find that the crossover temperature, where the intrinsic magnetisation changes from superparamagnetic to a completely disordered paramagnetic regime, is weakly dependent on the system length requiring giant sizes ({\it e.g.,} of the order of the observable universe $\sim$10$^{26}$ m) to be reconcilable with the Mermin-Wagner theorem for zero magnetic ordering at finite temperatures. Our findings indicate exchange interactions as the main driving force behind the stabilisation of short-range order in 2D magnetism and broaden the horizons of possibilities for exploration of compounds with low anisotropy at an atomically thin level.

Miniature gas chromatography (GC) columns of length 6m were fabricated in silicon using eutectic bonding to achieve a column with improved temperature control. The micro GC column includes an integrated platinum thin film heater and temperature sensors for closed loop temperature programing. In order to achieve low power operation the GC column was mounted inside the vacuum chamber of an ion-trap mass spectrometer. This approach provides much lower power consumption than a laboratory instrument. The ion trap electronics were miniaturized and operate at lower power, to demonstrate a portable instrument able to operate at with less than 25W, including vacuum pumps. This instrument will have a range of applications from environmental monitoring, to food safety and medical diagnostics, including breath analysis. Static coating of the stationary phase in the microfabricated column was carried out by injection using a solvent and extraction at reduced pressure to improve resolution. This paper reports the results of different stationary phases investigated to separate mixtures of volatile organic compounds, specifically OV-1 and OV-215. The properties of the stationary phases where characterized using a novel probe mixture for microcolumn evaluation and six McReynolds probes to identify the Kovats indices and the polarity of the column. The dependence of polarity on the coating technique and temperature of the column during analysis was also investigated. Results are presented with both an FID and ion-trap mass spectrometer to achieve rapid temperature programmed analysis of mixtures of up to 18 organic compounds.

The Central Iberian Zone presents an exceptional geological interest for its great exploration potential for a number of elements including gold. Metallogeny within the area is mainly related to regional metamorphism and late magmatic activity during the Variscan orogeny. In 2013-2014 junior company Mineral Exploration Network Ltd. has carried out an extensive prospecting field work with a primarily view to discover Au within the area around Logrosan granitic pluton (Caceres, Spain). The main output of the survey was a localization and presorting of potentially mineralized territory unites at the extensive spatial scale (more than 240 sq. km). The known gold showings in the Central Iberian zone are considered to be synorogenic with a mainly metamorphic fluid source. As arsenic commonly forms widespread geochemical haloes near practically all orogenic gold deposits and appears to be easily and credibly measured by express analytical methods (XRF), it was selected as one of the major pathfinder elements for the initial prospecting. Designed geochemical survey allowed delineating potential target area with contrastive complex As-W-Zn-Pb anomaly in soil sediments and significant quantities of gold particles in heavy mineral concentrates. Placer gold particles analyses and their typomorphic features confirmed nearby primary gold source existence. The suggested scope of work proved to be efficient for assessing mineralization potential and selecting perspective target areas for a detailed drilling.

The goal of the work presented in this article was to provide a preliminary screening for a novel fluorinated compound, oxalyl fluoride, C 2 O 2 F 2 (F-(C=O)-(C=O)-F), as a potential replacement for perfluorocompounds in dielectric etch applications. Both process and emissions data were collected and the results were compared to those provided by a process utilizing a standard perfluorinated etch chemistry (C 2 F 6 ). In this evaluation, oxalyl fluoride produced very low quantities of global warming compounds under the conditions in which it was tested, as compared to the C 2 F 6 process A preliminary evaluation of the compound's process performance was also carried out. Patterned tetraethoxysilane-deposited silicon oxide masked with deep UV photoresist having 0.6, 0.45, and 0.35 μm via hole features was used as the test vehicle. Although C 2 O 2 F 2 was capable of etching silicon dioxide, low oxide etch rate and poor selectivity to the mask layer were observed. Finally, in addition to the experimental work performed, a set of ab initio quantum chemical calculations was undertaken to obtain enthalpies of dissociation for each of the bonds in the oxalyl fluoride molecule in order to better understand its dissociation pathways in plasma environments.

1- and 2-iodoheptafluoropropane were characterized extensively as potential replacement etchants for perfluorocompounds used in an oxide etch application. In the present study, via holes of critical dimension down to 0.35 μm were etched in an inductively coupled high density plasma tool. Oxide etch rate, mask and stop layer selectivities, and feature profile were among the principal metrics used to evaluate the performance of these compounds. A conventional (C3F8-based) etch process was used as a reference. Process behavior as a function of a number of variables—namely source power, bias power, etch gas flow, additive gas CH3F) flow, roof, wall, and chiller temperatures, and pressure was studied. While good etch rates and feature profiles were obtained, mask and stop layer selectivity was found to be limited.
