Abstract

In this work we map tunnel conductance curves with nanometric spatial resolution, tracking polaronic quasiparticle excitations when cooling across the insulator-to-metal transition in La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 films. In the insulating phase the spectral signature of polarons, a depletion of conductance at low bias flanked by peaks, is detected all over the scanned surface. These features are still observed at the transition and persist on cooling into the metallic phase. Polaron-binding energy maps reveal that polarons are not confined to regions embedded in a highly-conducting matrix but are present over the whole field of view both above and below the transition temperature., 10 pages, 4 figures

10. Tritium spelta L. – Suebian crop? An ethnographic hypothesis on genetic trial

Abstract

Until the 20th century, spelt (Triticum spelta) was the traditional wheat used in the North-West of the Iberian Peninsula. A recently proposed ethnographic thesis states that this cereal was a vestige and heritage of the Germanic Suebi kingdom that established in Gallecia between 410 and 584. The present study aims to verify the mentioned thesis and to draw conclusions about possible migrations routes of the suebians. The genetic comparison included Triticum spelta L. samples of North-West-Iberian origin and a large number of samples from other Eurasian regions, including alleged suebian homeland regions (e.g. Suabia/Germany) before they immigrated in the Peninsula. An approximately 1-kb sequence, including a part of the promoter and the coding region of the high molecular-weight (HMW) glutenin B1-1 subunit gene of 48 accessions were analysed by allelic differentiation. The mutual similarities between all sequences were determined by multiple alignment and using the Neighbor Joining clustering method (Bionumerics software). Our data show that Iberian, Mediterranean and Eurasian varieties clearly shared genetic similarities, whereas the varieties from Central and North Europe grouped in other clusters. We therefore suggest that this cereal was not a vestige of the Germanic Suebi kingdom that established in Gallecia., Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT) - POCI 2010; POCI/HEC/56971/2004., FEDER.

Abstract

PubMed ID: 12829583, Several studies have compared bone marrow (BM) and peripheral blood (PB) as stem cell sources in patients receiving allografts, but the cell doses infused have not been considered, especially for BM. Using the ALWP/EBMT registry, we retrospectively studied 881 adult patients with acute myelocytic leukemia (AML), who received a non-T-depleted allogeneic BM (n = 515) or mobilized PB (n = 366) standard transplant, in first remission (CR1), from an HLA-identical sibling, over a 5-year period from January 1994. The BM cell dose ranged from 0.17 to 29 × 10 8 /kg with a median of 2.7 × 10 8 /kg. The PB cell dose ranged from 0.02 to 77 × 10 8 /kg with a median of 9.3 × 10 8 /kg. The median dose for patients receiving BM (2.7 × 10 8 /kg) gave the greatest discrimination. In multivariate analyses, high-dose BM compared to PB was associated with lower transplant-related mortality (RR = 0.61; 95% CI, 0.39-0.98; P = .04), better leukemia-free survival (RR = 0.65; 95% CI, 0.46-0.91; P = .013), and better overall survival (RR = 0.64; 95% CI, 0.44-0. 92; P = .016). The present study in patients with AML receiving allografts in first remission indicates a better outcome with BM as compared to PB, when the dose of BM infused is rich. © 2003 by The American Society of Hematology.

The Acute Leukemia Working Party (ALWP) of the European Cooperative Group for Blood Marrow Transplantation (EBMT)

Abstract

Several studies have compared bone marrow (BM) and peripheral blood (PB) as stem cell sources in patients receiving allografts, but the cell doses infused have not been considered, especially for BM. Using the ALWP/EBMT registry, we retrospectively studied 881 adult patients with acute myelocytic leukemia (AML), who received a non-T-depleted allogeneic BM (n = 515) or mobilized PB (n = 366) standard transplant, in first remission (CR1), from an HLA-identical sibling, over a 5-year period from January 1994. The BM cell dose ranged from 0.17 to 29 × 108/kg with a median of 2.7 × 108/kg. The PB cell dose ranged from 0.02 to 77 × 10 8/kg with a median of 9.3 × 108/kg. The median dose for patients receiving BM (2.7 × 108/kg) gave the greatest discrimination. In multivariate analyses, high-dose BM compared to PB was associated with lower transplant-related mortality (RR = 0.61; 95% CI, 0.39-0.98; P = .04), better leukemia-free survival (RR = 0.65; 95% CI, 0.46-0.91; P = .013), and better overall survival (RR = 0.64; 95% CI, 0.44-0. 92; P = .016). The present study in patients with AML receiving allografts in first remission indicates a better outcome with BM as compared to PB, when the dose of BM infused is rich. © 2003 by The American Society of Hematology.

13. Current-induced highly dissipative domains in high Tc thin films

Abstract

We have investigated the resistive response of high Tc thin films submitted to a high density of current. For this purpose, current pulses were applied into bridges made of Nd(1.15)Ba(1.85)Cu3O7 and Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8. By recording the time dependent voltage, we observe that at a certain critical current j*, a highly dissipative domain develops somewhere along the bridge. The successive formation of these domains produces stepped I-V characteristics. We present evidences that these domains are not regions with a temperature above Tc, as for hot spots. In fact this phenomenon appears to be analog to the nucleation of phase-slip centers observed in conventional superconductors near Tc, but here in contrast they appear in a wide temperature range. Under some conditions, these domains will propagate and destroy the superconductivity within the whole sample. We have measured the temperature dependence of j* and found a similar behavior in the two investigated compounds. This temperature dependence is just the one expected for the depairing current, but the amplitude is about 100 times smaller., 9 pages, 9 figures, Revtex, to appear in Phys. Rev. B

Abstract

The interaction of 111In-low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and 123I-LDL with human liver-plasma membranes was investigated and compared. LDLs were isolated by sequential ultracentrifugation and radiolabeled either with 123I (using lodogen or iodine-monochloride) each followed by purification with gel-chromatography or dialysis) or 111In (using cyclic DTPA-anhydride). LDL concentrations of 0.1 to 32 micrograms protein/ml were used for direct binding assays investigating the specific binding of labeled LDL (in the presence of a 50-fold excess of unlabeled LDL) to human liver apoB-receptors. In separate experiments, displacement of bound 111In-(123I)-LDL by unlabeled LDL was studied. Human liver plasma membranes bound 239 +/- 26 ng protein of 111In-LDL/mg protein and 148 +/- 18 ng protein of 123I-LDL/mg protein specifically (p less than 0.001). The corresponding dissociation constants were 0.6 +/- 0.2 and 1.2 +/- 0.7 micrograms protein/ml, respectively (p less than 0.001). The capacity of unlabeled LDL to displace bound 111In-LDL was four times higher than that for 123I-LDL (IC50: 1.7 +/- 0.7 versus 7.7 +/- 1.0 micrograms protein/ml). No significant differences among the different methods of iodination of LDL were found. The findings show that 111In-labeled lipoproteins might be a better ligand for lipoprotein-receptor binding studies as compared to radioiodinated lipoprotein products.
