Abstract

It is desirable for sick children to be hospitalized in a pediatric ward which is properly equipped with the facilities necessary for, and staff who understand and know how to care for children. How-evwr, there are some situations in which hospitalized children have to stay in the same room or in the same ward mixed with adult patients. Mixed wardization is becoming more prevalent, especially in medium and small scale medical institutions.Hence, for the purpose of obtaining insight regarding nursing care and its management with re-gard to hospitalized children in an era of fewer children, this study was undertaken to determine the extent that nurses and the head nurses involved in care of sick children are conscious of stuation, and to understand the actual condition of the hospital environment surrounding such children in a hospital less that 300 beds.The result shows that the number of hospitals with less than 300 beds where a child or children were newly hospitalized amounted to 21 institutions (37wards) during 6 months in Yamanashi pre-fecture. More than 90% were hospitalized in mixed wards. The total number of children who stayed in mixed wards reached about 300 per year. The main reason for hospitalization of these children was pediatric internal diseases. Of the remainder, the majority had fractures, followed by surgical and otorhinolaryncological disorders.It is fact that these are not sufficient facilities or articles indispensable for the care of children in mixed wards, and the nurses assigned to mixed wards are quite busy and anxious that they do not have satiafactory experience or knowledge to take cape of the children.
