In this paper we investigate the connections between population development, socio-economic status and the sense of belonging, in the understanding of social life in places. The article is based on a mixed-method study that includes register-based demographic data on inhabitants in the municipality of Aalborg in Denmark, survey data, and findings from fifty qualitative ethnographic interviews. We argue that local belonging is important to people, although increasingly complex and varied across local neighbourhoods. The conceptualization of the relations between demographic change, neighbourhood development and belonging is influenced by the Human Ecology (Park & Burgess 1925) that offers useful but also premature theoretical contributions in this field. A statistical age-period-cohort model was used to depict second-time birth rates and the spacing between the first and second child in Denmark, including 524,316 one-child mothers who gave birth to 296,923 second children 1980-1994. The spacing between the first and second child varies according to age, as older women had shorter duration from first to second child than younger women. Our results emphasize the importance of including an interaction between age and duration since first birth when analysing second-birth rates.

Kapitlet beskriver og diskuterer nogle dokumenterede forskelle i helbred, sygelighed kontaktmønster med sundhedsvæsenet mellem kvinder og mænd. Indledningsvist præsenteres ’køn’ som begreb, efterfulgt af et afsnit om kønsforskellene i dødeligheden og hvilke konsekvenser, dette har. Dernæst ses på kønsforskelle i sygdomsforekomst og der fokuseres på nogle få sygdomme, hvor der er udprægede forskelle mellem kønnene: Hjerte-kar sygdomme og depression. Desuden belyses omfanget af ulykker og vold blandt de to køn samt de to køns medicinforbrug og kontakt til sundhedsvæsenet. Dernæst følger et afsnit om reproduktiv sundhed, som er relateret til sundhed inden for alle aspekter af det reproduktive system og dets funktion og processer. Kapitlet afsluttes med en diskussion af de to køn i relation til familie, arbejde og sundhed.

The purpose of this article is to pose some theoretical questions to the relations between local community, mobility and belonging. In continuation the methodological implications of the theoretical debate are discussed. The article also outlines different perspectives on local neighbourhoods, recent developments in the understandings of mobility and local communities, and presents different theoretical views on local belonging. These questions highlight the necessity to discuss and investigate two overall narratives in social theory about the connection between space and social relations. Namely, 1) that social relations in the late modern society has been lifted from a local geographical context and restructured in a global context, because individuals’ attachment to geographical place has been eroded. 2) We want to question the traditional assumptions connected to socio-­‐economic segregation labelling the marginalised groups as contained in local neighbourhoods, while ascribing freedom and reflexivity exclusively to the middle and upper classes. The study of local communities in urban environments has a long tradition in the science of sociology and it is concluded that revitalizing and methodologically updating the classic Chicago school of sociology can create a productive approach to the study of local community, mobility and belonging., Tidsskrift for Kortlægning og Arealforvaltning, Vol 119 No 46 (2011)

In a perspective of socio-geographic segregation and it’s socio-demographic consequences, depopulation of specific rural areas in the outskirts of Denmark has become an issue of increasing importance in public debate and in part of the research community. The question of depopulation is also part of the research question for an ongoing study on ‘Local community, mobility and belonging’ in Aalborg, from which we report. Contemporary municipality of Aalborg, which is the third largest in Denmark, comprises many various types of communities – from partly segregated neighbourhoods in the City, through the surrounding villages’ more mixed populations to depopulated small towns in the periphery. We are exploring the association between characteristics of the local communities and the inhabitants’ sense of belonging. As characteristics of the areas is included information on mobility (moving in-and out of the area), formations and dissolutions of families, being either marriages or co-resident couples and sociodemographic background. The pivot for the study is that there is a lack of knowledge about whether local communities differ from neighbourhood to neighbourhood, how they are influenced by the inhabitants’ mobility and finally, how they are influenced by the inhabitants’ sense of belonging. The study applies a two-step- method: 1) Neighbourhoods are identified by use of GIS-data and characteristics of the population throughout 25 years (from national population-based registers) are used to calculate aggregate measures of the neighbourhoods’ stability regarding population composition, family structures and migration patterns, and, subsequently, 2) Qualitative interviews focusing on sense of belonging are conducted with individuals selected from the knowledge on the characteristics of the neighbourhoods. What is presented here is the sociodemographic characteristics of the neighbourhoods in Aalborg municipality as identified by a combination of GIS and individual register data, the selection of communities for and preliminary results from the qualitative part of the study.

Objective: The focus of this paper is to study, on a national basis, how the event of an inducedabortion modifies the transition to first birth for Danish women aged 20-39 years in the period1982-2001, taking into account also educational level, family situation, and urbanisation.Data and methods: The data are obtained by linking several national public registers in Denmark,using the unique personal identification number. Initially, a logistic regression analysis is employedin order to model the first birth probability in a given year. Secondly, the long-term effect of aninduced abortion is examined by cumulative first birth probabilities, derived from a life tableanalysis.Main findings and conclusion: Previous abortions increased the first birth probability, though thiseffect was almost entirely confined to single women. For cohabiting and married women, previousabortions had a minimal or no effect on the first birth probability.
