On 17th and 18th March 2016, the annual lecture of the SEPAWA Specialist Group "Professional Cleaning & Care" was held in Rapperswil, Switzerland. The programme, which had the theme “Small But Powerful! – Raw Materials Make It Possible,” explored the particular importance of raw materials, their requirements and their application from different angles. This year's event was attended by about 60 people. A total of eight lectures covered the theme comprehensively and encouraged attendees to think, discuss and act. As a multidisciplinary event, the meeting addressed not only its target group of potential users, but also other actors in the broader chemistry and cleaning sector. These include, for example, manufacturers, chemical formulators, suppliers, industrial companies, commercial cleaners, cleaning and hygiene specialists, authorities, educational establishments and other professionals and executives who are associated with professional cleaning and care. The aim of the event was to stimulate lively conversation about the limits of technically related disciplines. This contribution seeks, and achieves, improved mutual understanding and the transfer of knowledge.

In der letzten Ausgabe berichteten wir bereits über die Vortragsveranstaltung der SEPAWA-­Fachgruppe «Professionelle Reinigung & Pflege», die in Rapperswil stattfand. In deren ­Mittelpunkt standen die ­besondere Bedeutung von Rohstoffen, deren Anforderungen und deren ­Applikation aus verschiedenen ­Blickwinkeln. Hier nun der zweite Teil unseres Rückblicks.

Im Frühjahr fand in Rapperswil die jährlich wiederkehrende Vortragsveranstaltung der ­SEPAWA-Fachgruppe «Professionelle Reinigung & Pflege» statt. Die Veranstaltung unter dem Titel «Klein, aber oho! – Rohstoffe machen’s möglich» befasste sich mit der besonderen ­Bedeutung von ­Rohstoffen, deren Anforderungen und deren Applikation aus verschiedenen ­Blickwinkeln. Erster Teil des Rückblicks auf die Veranstaltung.

Es wurde eine kinetische Modellierung für die Reaktion zwischen Fettsäuremethylestern (FAME) mit Glyzerin zu Monoglyzeriden und Diglyzeriden durchgeführt. Dazu wurden die Tropfengrößen in dem Flüssig-Flüssig-System durch Mikrophotographie sowie die Konzentrations-Zeit-Verläufe der Glyzeride und des FAME durch Gaschromatographie bestimmt. Die Tropfengrößen in dem reaktiven System nehmen mit der Zeit ab, jedoch hat die Tropfengröße keinen Einfluss auf die Reaktionsgeschwindigkeit. Den größten Einfluss auf die Reaktionsgeschwindigkeit hat der Druck, da durch Unterdruck das Koppelprodukt Methanol aus dem Gleichgewicht entfernt wird. Durch eine spezielle Probetechnik wurde zusätzlich die Gleichgewichtszusammensetzung in den einzelnen Phasen bezüglich der Alkohole Methanol und Glyzerin bestimmt. Die Modellierung zeigt, dass ein von der Literatur abweichender Ansatz für die Reaktionsgeschwindigkeit eine bessere Anpassung des Selektivitätsverlaufs erlaubt. Bei den untersuchten Bedingungen mit Temperaturen zwischen 130 und 160 °C ohne Lösungsmittel und Katalysatorkonzentrationen von 1 Gewichtsprozent ist die Reaktion nicht stofftransportkontrolliert. Der sigmoidale Verlauf der Umsatz-Zeit-Kurve entsteht durch eine zunehmende Löslichkeit des Glyzerins in der Methylesterphase, in der die Reaktion stattfindet. Es wurden die Reaktionsgeschwindigkeitskonstanten und die Aktivierungsenergien bestimmt. A kinetic modeling was done for the transesterification reaction of fatty acid methyl esters (FAME) with glycerol. The products are monoglyceride and diglyceride. In the course of this study the drop sizes of the liquid-liquid-system were determined by an endoscopical micro photographic set up. The drop size showed no influence on the reaction rate. Additionally the concentrations of FAME and the glycerides were determined by gas chromatography. The main factor that affects the reaction rate is the pressure because the couple product methanol can be removed from the equilibrium. The concentration of methanol and glycerol was determined by a special sample procedure at equilibrium. The agreement of selectivity data and simulation could be improved by the use of a model different from that in literature. At the reaction conditions in this study between 130 and 160°C, without solvents and a catalyst concentration of 1%wt no mass transfer limitation of the reaction was observed. The sigmoidal shape of the conversion-time plot could be explained by an increase of the solubility of glycerol in the methyl ester layer in which the reaction takes place. Reaction rate constants and activation energies were determined.
