This paper presents a study on form-finding of four-stage class one self-equilibrated spine biotensegrity models. Advantageous features such as slenderness and natural curvature of the human spine, as well as the stabilizing network that consists of the spinal column and muscles, were modeled and incorporated in the mathematical formulation of the spine biotensegrity models. Form-finding analysis, which involved determination of independent self-equilibrium stress modes using generalized inverse and their linear combination, was carried out. Form-finding strategy for searching the self-equilibrated models was studied through two approaches: application of various combinations of (1) twist angles and (2) nodal coordinates. A total of three configurations of the spine biotensegrity models with different sizes of triangular cell were successfully established for the first time in this study. All members in the spine biotensegrity models satisfied the assumption of linear elastic material behavior. With the established spine biotensegrity model, the advantageous characteristics of flexibility and versatility of movement can be further studied for potential application in deployable structures and flexible arm in the robotic industry.

Background The 2016 Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM)/European Society of Intensive Care Medicine (ESICM) task force for Sepsis-3 devised new definitions for sepsis, sepsis with organ dysfunction and septic shock. Although Sepsis-3 was data-driven, evidence-based approach, East Asian descents comprised minor portions of the project population. Methods We selected Korean participants from the fever and antipyretics in critically ill patients evaluation (FACE) study, a joint study between Korea and Japan. We calculated the concordance rates for sepsis diagnosis between Sepsis-2 and Sepsis-3 criteria and evaluated mortality rates of sepsis, sepsis with organ dysfunction, and septic shock by Sepsis-3 criteria using the selected data. Results Korean participants of the FACE study were 913 (383 with sepsis and 530 without sepsis by Sepsis-2 criteria). The concordance rate for sepsis diagnosis between Sepsis-2 and Sepsis-3 criteria was 55.4%. The intensive care unit (ICU) and 28-day mortality rates of sepsis, sepsis with organ dysfunction, and septic shock patients according to Sepsis-3 criteria were 26.2% and 31.0%, 27.5% and 32.5%, and 40.8% and 43.4%, respectively. The quick Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (qSOFA) was inferior not only to SOFA but also to systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) for predicting ICU and 28-day mortality. Conclusions The concordance rates for sepsis diagnosis between Sepsis-2 and Sepsis-3 criteria were low. Mortality rate for septic shock in Koreans was consistent with estimates made by the 2016 SCCM/ESICM task force. SOFA and SIRS were better than qSOFA for predicting ICU and 28-day mortality in Korean ICU patients.

최근 급변하는 환경속에서 기업의 장기적인 성장을 위해 리더의 새로운 역할이 강조되고 있으며, 그 이슈가 바로 서번트 리더십이다. 그러나 서번트 리더십과 관련된 선행연구들은 실증연구에 많은 초점을 두고 있어 실무에서 어떻게 적용되는가에 관한 연구결과를 보여주는데 한계점이 있어왔다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 서번트 리더십 개념과 특징을 이해하고 실무에 어떻게 적용하여 기존의 리더십 이론과 차이를 확인하기 위해 중소기업 중 L기업을 선정하여 사례연구 하였다. 연구결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, L기업의 최고경영자는 직원들에게 사내 인트라넷을 이용해 조직의 비전을 제시하고 이를 달성하면 그에 걸 맞는 보상을 연계시킴으로써 직무 몰입을 유도하여 조직의 공동체를 형성하였다. 둘째, L기업의 최고경영자는 조직구성원들이 자율적으로 업무를 수행하도록 권한과 책임을 위임하여 업무를 신속하고 정확하게 할 수 있도록 하였다. 셋째, L기업의 최고경영자는 조직구성원들이 일을 잘 진행할 수 있도록 성장을 지원하고 환경을 조성해주는 노력을 기울여 직원들의 직무열의가 증가하게 되었다. 또한 근무환경의 개선은 외부 인사들로 부터 회사에 대한 신뢰를 향상시켜 영업효과를 가져왔다. 넷째, 최고경영자의 헌신과 다양한 배려는 조직구성원들의 직무만족을 향상시키고 이를 통해 조직성과도 향상되었다. 마지막으로, L기업의 서번트 리더십을 통해 나타난 결과 중 새로운 발견은 수직적이던 조직구조에서 수평적인 조직의 구조로 변화를 통해 변화에 대한 빠른 대응, 조직구성원들의 창의력 개발, 그리고 조직구성원들 간의 협력 등을 유도하여 궁극적으로 조직성과를 개선시키고 있어 최고경영자의 서번트 리더십은 조직구조에 영향을 미칠 수 있는 중요한 요인임을 발견하였다.

Form-finding of membrane surface bordered by Möbius strip is investigated. Möbius strip is a surface with only one side and only one boundary component. In this study, the possibility of adopting the form of Möbius strip as surface shape for membrane structure is studied. The influence of non-orientable characteristic of Möbius strip on the modeling process using finite element procedures is investigated. Non-linear displacement method is used for form-finding analysis. Form and pattern of pre-stress in the resulting membrane surface are studied.

Single-molecule F\"orster resonance energy transfer (smFRET) is increasingly being used to determine distances, structures, and dynamics of biomolecules in vitro and in vivo. However, generalized protocols and FRET standards ensuring both the reproducibility and accuracy of measuring FRET efficiencies are currently lacking. Here we report the results of a worldwide, comparative, blind study, in which 20 labs determined the FRET efficiencies of several dye-labeled DNA duplexes. Using a unified and straightforward method, we show that FRET efficiencies can be obtained with a standard deviation between ${\Delta}$E = +-0.02 and +-0.05. We further suggest an experimental and computational procedure for converting FRET efficiencies into accurate distances. We discuss potential uncertainties in the experiment and the modelling. Our extensive quantitative assessment of intensity-based smFRET measurements and correction procedures serve as an essential step towards validation of distance networks with the ultimate aim to archive reliable structural models of biomolecular systems obtained by smFRET-based hybrid methods., Comment: 27 pages, 5 figures, supplementary material, corrections: p20 last sentence; eqn. 13 & 14
