Three-dimensional carbon-based structures have proven useful for tailoring material properties in structural mechanical and energy storage applications. One approach to obtain them has been by carbonization of selected metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with catalytic metals, but this is not applicable to most common MOF structures. Here, we present a strategy to transform common MOFs, by guest inclusions and high-temperature MOF-guest interactions, into complex carbon-based, diatom-like, hierarchical structures (named for the morphological similarities with the naturally existing diatomaceous species). As an example, we introduce metal salt guests into HKUST-1-type MOFs to generate a family of carbon-based nano-diatoms with two to four levels of structural hierarchy. We report control of the morphology by simple changes in the chemistry of the MOF and guest, with implications for the formation mechanisms. We demonstrate that one of these structures has unique advantages as a fast-charging lithium-ion battery anode. The tunability of composition should enable further studies of reaction mechanisms and result in the growth of a myriad of unprecedented carbon-based structures from the enormous variety of currently available MOF-guest candidates.

The reduction of graphene oxide is one of the most facile methods to fabricate a large amount of graphene and the reduction rate of graphene oxide is related with the quality of synthesized graphene for its possible application. The reduction rate is usually determined by using various spectroscopy measurements such as Raman spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Here we propose that the magnetic data can be used as a means of determining the quality of graphene oxide (GO) and reduced graphene oxide (RGO) by the investigation of close relation between magnetic moment and chemical bonding state. Our experimental findings and previous theoretical studies suggest that hydroxyl functional groups in GO mainly contribute to Langevin paramagnetism, carboxyl functional groups in RGO1 act as the source for Pauli paramagnetism, and sp2 bonding state in RGO2 plays a major role on the diamagnetism. Especially in terms of mass production, the magnetic data is useful for decomposing the chemical bonding electronic states in graphene-like samples and judging their quality., 17 pages, 4 figures

AIM:To report a procedure and results of a two-stage operation to manage intractable extensive orbital implant exposure with a large conjunctival defect which was difficult to treat with dermis fat grafts due to repeated graft necrosis. METHODS:A retrospective chart review of four patients who had extensive orbital implant exposures with large conjunctival defects and had past histories of repeated autologous or preserved dermis graft failures was done. As a first-stage operation, the problematic pre-existing orbital implants were removed and autologous dermis fat grafts alone were performed on the defect area. Four months later, new orbital implants were secondarily inserted after confirmation of graft survival. The size of the conjunctival defects and state of the extraocular muscles were checked preoperatively. Success of the operations and complications were investigated. RESULTS:The mean size of the conjuctival defects was 17.3mm×16.0mm, and the mean time from the initial diagnosis of orbital implant exposure to implant removal and autologous dermis fat graft was 20.8 months. After implant removal and autologous dermis fat graft, no graft necrosis was observed in any patients. Also, implant exposure or fornix shortening was not observed in any patients after new orbital implant insertion. CONCLUSION:The secondary insertion of a new orbital implant after pre-existing implant removal and preceding dermis fat graft is thought to be an another selective management of intractable orbital implant exposure in which dermis fat grafts persistently fail.

Purpose To report a case of one-and-a-half syndrome caused by pontine metastasis of breast cancer. Methods A 46-year-old woman with breast cancer presented with binocular diplopia for 2 month. She had previously been diagnosed with invasive ductal carcinoma in her left breast and had known metastases to the lung. She had undergone a modified radical mastectomy and chemotherapy. Her binocular horizontal diplopia worsened progressively and accompanied ipsilateral facial parethesia. Results Her visual acuity was 10/20 in both eyes and no abnormal findings were detected on anterior segment exam. Her both eyes were fixed in the midline on attempted right gaze. On attempted left gaze, only left eye abduction was preserved and vertical eye movements were normal. Brain MRI revealed that variable sized nodular enhancing lesions at right pons, both cerebral hemispheres, left globus pallidus, right temporal lobe and upper portion of cerebellar vermis. Conclusion Breast cancer is known to be the second most common cause of brain metastasis. We should pay attention to the patient’s medical history who presenting diplopia
