The synergistic effects of polar CoO, Co3O4, and metallic Co contribute to accelerating LiPSs conversion and restraining the shuttle effect in the Li–S battery.

Selective hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde (CAL) toward cinnamyl alcohol (COL) is an extremely important and challenging reaction. Herein, a series of PtxFey-Al2O3 bimetallic catalysts with varied Pt to Fe ratios were prepared by incipient wetness impregnation method. The introduction of Fe significantly modifies the electronic and surface properties of Pt, which clearly enhances the C=O hydrogenation selectivity. Among all the catalysts, Pt3Fe-Al2O3 displays the best catalytic performance and the conversion of CAL is 96.6% with 77.2% selectivity of COL within 1 h. In addition, Pt3Fe-Al2O3 had excellent reusability with 76% COL selectivity after five runs of the recycle process. Further characterization of the fresh, used and cycled catalysts revealed that the structure and electronic state of the synthesized PtxFey-Al2O3 are unchanged after hydrogenation reaction. The identical-location transmission electron microscopy (IL-TEM) results revealed that the interaction between the nanoparticles and the supports was strong and the catalyst was relatively stable.

Selective hydrogenation of substituted nitroarenes is an important reaction to obtain amines. Supported metal catalysts are wildly used in this reaction because the surface structure of supports can tune the properties of the supported metal nanoparticles (NPs) and promote the selectivity to amines. Herein, Pt NPs were immobilized on FeOOH, Fe3O4 and α-Fe2O3 nanorods to synthesize a series of iron compounds supported Pt catalysts by liquid phase reduction method. Chemoselective hydrogenation of 3-nitrostyrene to 3-aminostyrene was used as probe reaction to evaluate the performance of the catalysts. The results show that Pt/FeOOH exhibits the highest selectivity and activity. FeOOH support with pores and -OH groups can tune the electronic structure of Pt NPs. The positive charge of Pt NPs supported on FeOOH is key factor for improving the catalytic performance.

Osteoporosis (OP) is characterized by the flaccidity of bones or bone bi-disease caused by kidney deficiency.

Background Chemotherapy resistance is an important bottleneck affecting the efficacy of chemotherapy in colon cancer. Therefore, improving the chemotherapy sensitivity of colorectal cancer cells is of great significance for improving the prognosis of patients with colon cancer. Methods CCK-8 assay was employed to examine the cell viability of colorectal cancer cell lines. Realtime-PCR and western blot were used to explore toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) expression in colorectal cancer cell lines. The functions of TLR4 in the stemness of the colorectal cancer cell lines were analyzed by infecting cells with lentivirus containing TLR4 siRNA. Results We found that aspirin could effectively enhance the chemosensitivity of CT26 and HCT116 colorectal cancer cell lines. Aspirin can also inhibit the stemness of colorectal cancer cell including inhibiting the number of clone formation and reducing the volume and number of cell spheres and inducing the down-regulation of stemness-related genes. Besides that, aspirin also lead to down-regulation of TLR4 expression in colorectal cancer cells. The TLR4 positive colorectal cancer cells demonstrated a higher chemotherapy resistance potential than TLR4 negative colorectal cancer cells. In addition, the stemness of TLR4 positive colorectal cancer cells is stronger than TLR4 negative colorectal cancer cells. Conclusion The results of our study indicate that aspirin increases chemosensitivity of colorectal cancer cells and inhibits the expression of toll-like receptor 4.

In-plane microsupercapacitors (MSCs) hold great promise for microscale power source, due to the extremely high power density and ultra-long cycling life. However, the scalable fabrication of flexible MSCs with high energy density remains a major challenge. Here, we demonstrate the fabrication of vanadium carbide/reduced graphene oxide (V8C7/rGO) MSCs via laser scribing on ammonium metavanadate/graphene oxide (NH4VO3/GO) films, prepared by efficient continuous centrifugal casting method. More than 20 MSCs can be produced on a flexible substrate in 30 min, showing the potential for scalable fabrication. The laser-induced V8C7/rGO shows highly porous microstructure, where vanadium carbide nanoparticles are in-situ synthesized and uniformly decorated on graphene nanosheets. The well-defined architecture endows V8C7/rGO MSCs with excellent electrochemical performance. The areal capacitance of these devices can be as high as 49.5 mF cm−2, 11 times higher than that of rGO MSCs. The volumetric energy density and power density can be up to 3.4 mWh cm−3 and 401 mW cm−3, respectively, competitive with the commercially available energy storage devices and most reported MSCs. In addition, V8C7/rGO MSCs show excellent flexibility and integrability, as well as long cycling life, promising for practical applications.

Atom-by-atom control of a catalyst surface is a central yet challenging topic in heterogeneous catalysis, which enables precisely confined adsorption and oriented approach of reactant molecules. Here, exposed surfaces with either consecutive Pd trimers (Pd 3 ) or isolated Pd atoms (Pd 1 ) are architected for Pd 2 Ga intermetallic nanoparticles (NPs) using reactive metal-support interaction (RMSI). At elevated temperatures under hydrogen, in situ atomic-scale transmission electron microscopy directly visualizes the refacetting of Pd 2 Ga NPs from energetically favorable (013)/(020) facets to (011)/(002). Infrared spectroscopy and acetylene hydrogenation reaction complementarily confirm the evolution from consecutive Pd 3 to Pd 1 sites of Pd 2 Ga catalysts with the concurrent fingerprinting CO adsorption and featured reactivities. Through theoretical calculations and modeling, we reveal that the restructured Pd 2 Ga surface results from the preferential arrangement of additionally reduced Ga atoms on the surface. Our work provides previously unidentified mechanistic insight into temperature-promoted RMSI and possible solutions to control and rearrange the surface atoms of supported intermetallic catalyst.

Lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries are promising candidates for high density electrochemical energy storage systems. However, the poor conductivity of S and the shuttle effect of polysulfides are a bottleneck to practical applications. Herein, a three-dimensional architecture, based on carbon nanotube (CNT) bridged Ti2C MXene nanosheets, was constructed as a sulfur host. This architecture was based on Ti atoms, which can chemically absorb polysulfides. The CNTs are highly conductive and intercalate into the MXene nanosheets to prevent their stacking and construct an interspace for polysulfides. This hybrid, as a host of S, can effectively alleviate the shuttle effect through a combination of physical confinement and chemical adsorption. This resulted in an open internal space, which served as a cathode for the loaded S to promote electron transport and enhance electrochemical kinetics of the polysulfide conversion in Li–S batteries.

The leaching behaviors of gold and silver from a complex sulfide concentrate in copper-tartrate-thiosulfate solutions were investigated in this paper. Experimental parameters, including temperature, initial pulp pH, and concentration of copper, tartrate, and thiosulfate, were systematically studied. The copper-tartrate-thiosulfate leaching system exhibits promising performance in dealing with the complex sulfide concentrate. Thiosulfate consumption could be greatly reduced due to the in-situ generation of thiosulfate derived from sulfur or disulfide ions. Increasing the temperature and concentrations of copper, tartrate, and thiosulfate can promote gold leaching. A low tartrate content and a moderate increase in temperature and copper and thiosulfate concentrations can accelerate silver leaching, but a higher temperature or copper content may depress silver extraction. A suitable pulp pH is critical for gold and silver leaching in copper-tartrate-thiosulfate solutions. An extraction of 74.50% Au and 36.33% Ag was obtained with the direct leaching of the concentrate, while the percentages can be significantly increased up to 82.60% and 70.38%, respectively, when leaching the calcine following the oxidative roasting pretreatment. The recycling of leaching solutions demonstrates that a suitable free tartrate content is of great significance in maintaining the stability of the novel system. As an alternative to the traditional cyanide or copper-ammonia-thiosulfate leaching processes, the copper-tartrate-thiosulfate leaching system provides an environmentally friendly, nontoxic, and relatively low-cost method for gold and silver leaching from ores or concentrates.

Nanoreactors with a delimited void space and a large number of mesoporous structures have attracted great attention as potential heterogeneous catalysts. In this work, a cobalt and nitrogen co-doped binary carbon@silica@carbon hydrophobic nanoreactor was synthesized by an in situ synthesis method. Cobalt porphyrin was used as an active component to construct Co–Nx sites, and the purpose of the double carbon layer coating was to enhance the hydrophobicity of the surface of the nanoreactor. The optimal nanoreactor could achieve 96.9% ethylbenzene conversion and 99.1% acetophenone selectivity and showed outstanding universality to many other aromatic alkanes. The superior performance was mainly due to the presence of double carbon layers and the high content of Co–Nx sites. The double hydrophobic carbon layer coating could not only promote the adsorption of organic molecules, but also implant Co–Nx active sites on both the inner and outer surfaces of the nanoreactor. This work proposed a meaningful strategy to obtain a highly efficient nanoreactor for C–H bond oxidation.

Although MXenes is highly attractive as anode materials of lithium ion batteries, it sets a bottleneck for higher capacity of the V2CTx MXene due to the limited interlayer space and the derived surface terminations. Herein, the cation intercalation and ion-exchange were well employed to achieve a K+ and Ca2+ intercalated V2CTx MXene. A larger interlayer distance and low F surface terminations were thereof obtained, which accelerates the ion transport and promotes the delicate surface of V2CTx MXene. As a result, a package of enhanced capacity, rate performance and cyclability can be achieved. Furthermore, the ion exchange approach can be extended to other 2D layered materials, and both the interlayer control and the surface modification will be achieved.

EMIm+, as a substitute for Li+, can solve the initial problems that accompany lithiation/delithiation processes on an anode. However, the larger size of EMIm+ limits the options when it comes to electrode materials. Herein, a multilayered Ti3C2Tx MXene was electrochemically pre-intercalated with Fe ions to achieve EMIm+ hosting abilities. As a result, a pre-intercalated MXene electrode exhibited enhanced EMIm+ transport and storage capabilities. When integrated with an EMIm+[PF6]− ionic liquid electrolyte, the assembled DIB provides an energy density of 76 W h kg−1 at a power density of 360 W kg−1, and 94.3% of the energy density is retained after 50 cycles. Compared with a pristine example, the Fe pre-intercalated Ti3C2Tx MXene showed a significant increase in electrochemical performance. Employing this approach to optimize layered materials may open up a new route for accurately tuning intercalated materials.

Background Hypertrophic scars (HSs) generally form after injury to the deep layers of the dermis and are characterized by excessive collagen deposition. An increasing amount of evidence has determined that human adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells attenuate fibrosis in various conditions. We explored the effect and possible mechanism of chyle fat-derived stem cells (CFSCs) on HS formation. Methods Hypertrophic scar-derived fibroblasts (HSFs) and CFSCs were isolated from individual patients. Third-passage CFSCs were isolated and cultured using a mechanical emulsification method, and their surface CD markers were analyzed by flow cytometry. The adipogenic and osteogenic differentiation capacity of the CFSCs was determined using oil red O staining and alizarin red S staining, respectively. Then, the effects of CFSCs on HSFs were assessed in vitro. Hypertrophic scar-derived fibroblasts were treated with starvation-induced conditioned medium from the CFSCs (CFSC-CM). The change in HSF cellular behaviors, such as cell proliferation, migration, and protein expression of scar-related molecules, was evaluated by cell counting assay, scratch wound assay, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and western blotting. All data were analyzed using SPSS 17.0. Results The CFSCs expressed CD90, CD105, and CD73 but did not express CD34, CD45, or CD31. The CFSCs differentiated into adipocytes and osteoblasts under the appropriate induction conditions. Chyle fat-derived stem cells conditioned medium inhibited HSF proliferation and migration. The in vitro and ex vivo studies revealed that CFSC-CM decreased type I collagen, type III collagen, and α smooth muscle actin expression. Conclusions Our results suggest that CFSCs are associated with the inhibition of fibrosis in HSFs by a paracrine effect. The use of CFSC-CM may be a novel therapeutic strategy for HSs.

BACKGROUND Chyle fat transplantation has shown positive effects on preexisting human hypertrophic scars (HSs) in a nude mouse HS graft model. METHODS Hypertrophic scar fragments were obtained from 5 surgically treated burn patients and implanted into the backs of nude mice in 3 groups: group A, control; group B, triamcinolone; and group C, chyle fat. The specimens were implanted after the corresponding intralesional injection in each group, and the mice were observed for 4 weeks. In total, 18 mice and 72 scar specimens were studied. After 4 weeks, the HSs were removed from the mice. Then, the scar weights, histology, and decorin staining were assessed to evaluate the therapeutic efficacy. RESULTS An obviously significant difference was observed in the HS weight reduction between groups A and C (P < 0.01), and a significant difference in the HS weight reduction was observed between groups A and B (P < 0.05). However, there was no significant difference between groups B and C. The treatment groups (groups B and C) showed strong decorin staining. Furthermore, the decorin staining was much stronger in group C than in group B (P < 0.05). Significant differences in extracellular matrix deposition were observed among the 3 groups, as determined by Masson trichrome staining. Both groups B and C showed significant therapeutic efficacy compared with group A, and group C exhibited a significant therapeutic effect compared with group B (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS This study indicates that chyle fat grafting is beneficial for treating HSs.

MXene has shown distinctive advantages as anode materials of lithium-ion batteries. However, local surface chemistry, which was confirmed that can block ion transfer and limit redox reaction, has a significant effect on electrochemical performance. Herein, annealing MXene under hydrogen was employed for removing −F and turning −OH to −O terminations. We demonstrate that it improves the kinetics of Li-ion transport between the electrolyte and electrode. As a result, a lower interfacial charge transfer impedance was obtained. The electrochemical measurement exhibited that a nearly 2-fold increase of specific capacity was achieved for the annealed MXene.

Ni-promoted electrocatalytic biomass reforming has shown promising prospect in enabling high value-added product synthesis. Here, we developed a novel hybrid catalyst with Ni nanosheet forests anchored on carbon paper. The hybrid catalyst exhibits high efficiency in electrooxidation of HMF to FDCA coupling with H2 production in high purity. The Ni nanosheets have small crystal grain sizes with abundant edges, which is able to deliver an efficient HMF oxidation to FDCA (selectivity >99 %) at low potential of 1.36 VRHE with high stability. The post-reaction structure analysis reveals the Ni nanosheets would transfer electrons to carbon and readily turn into NiOx and Ni(OH)x during the reaction. DFT results suggest high valence Ni species would facilitate the chemical adsorption (activation) of HMF revealing the reaction pathway. This work emphasizes the importance of the precise control of Ni activity via atomic structure engineering.

In this work, g-C3N4/ZIF-8 heterojunction photocatalysts were synthesised by the process by which the metal-organic framework ZIF-8 nanoparticles were grown onto the g-C3N4 layer in situ. Bismuth element was doped into the as-prepared g-C3N4/ZIF-8 material and a new type of Bi@g-C3N4/ZIF-8 composite photocatalysts was manufactured, in which the doping element acts in adjusting the bandgap in the photocatalysts. The prepared photocatalysts were characterised by XRD, FESEM, TEM, FTIR, XPS, UV–VIS DRS, photoluminescence and photo-electrochemical experiments. The results show that the ZIF-8 nanoparticles grown in situ were well-formed onto the g-C3N4 layer, and bismuth was evenly doped into the gaps of the g-C3N4/ZIF-8 framework. The degradation rate of methylene blue by CNZ-1.5(Bi)-12, which was a photocatalyst composed of 12% Bi-doped with g-C3N4/ZIF-8 material (the mass ratio of g-C3N4: ZIF-8 = 1:1.5), reached 86.6% under visible light irradiation within 60 min. The free radical scavenging experiment and electron spin resonance spectroscopy showed that ∙OH was the main active substance. Bismuth doping into the photocatalytic system promotes the excitation of electrons from the valence band to the conduction band and provides a good channel for the transmission of photogenerated carriers as well. It is achieved that intensive visible light absorption, the enhanced separation efficiency of photogenerated carriers, and excellent thermal stability and high recyclability in the novel composite photocatalyst, owing to the synergistic effect of the introduced bismuth with the heterostructure of g-C3N4/ZIF-8. Therefore, the synthesised Bi@g-C3N4/ZIF-8 heterojunction photocatalysts may be used as a good photocatalyst for purifying and degrading organic matter in sewage.

Angelicae Sinensis Radix, also called Dang-Gui in Chinese, is an important and widely used natural product in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) formulae with therapeutic properties of “menstrual regulation”. However, the underlying mechanisms on the molecular-interaction-level are still under exploration. In this study, based on evidenced bioactive compounds, targeted genes and proteins, different level functional annotations on gene ontology biological processes (GOBP) was deployed and then validated with microarray data. As a result, participating-fold analysis of targeted proteins revealed that the rhythmic process is the top GOBP. Further analysis indicated that the ovulation cycle process is associated with both the rhythmic process and TCM clinical relevance. After that, a kernel candidate regulation network was constructed towards the therapeutic properties of menstrual regulation identified in TCM that is delivered by Dang-Gui.

Ginseng is an important herbal medicine in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) with therapeutic properties of “reinforcing primary qi” and “pulse restoring and blocking depletion” that are mentioned in both TCM textbooks and the Pharmacopoeia of the People’s Republic of China. However, the underlying mechanisms are still under exploration. In this study, based on evidenced bioactive compounds and targeted genes/proteins, top-level functional annotation towards gene ontology biological processes was deployed and then validated with transcript microarray data. As a result, a kernel candidate regulation network was constructed towards the therapeutic properties of ginseng identified in TCM. Functional annotation indicated three associated biological processes e.g. (1) cell killing, (2) rhythmic process, and (3) growth. In short, through regulating the three processes, the therapeutic properties of “reinforcing primary qi” and “pulse restoring and blocking depletion” identified in TCM can be roughly elaborated and validated.

Dioscoreae Rhizoma, also called Shan-Yao in Chinese, is a tonic food and herbal medicine in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). Recent biomedical researches on Shan-Yao mainly focused on cancer and immune responses that are scattered in the literature. To build a holistic view of the immunoregulation functions delivered by Shan-Yao, the dispersed experimental knowledge items were collected, integrated, analyzed, and demonstrated. As a result, a candidate regulation network was constructed towards the immunoregulation. This network was composed of Shan-Yao, bioactive compounds, target proteins, protein interactions, pathway enrichment, and functional annotations. Functional annotations demonstrated the cell killing process is tightly associated with immunoregulation scenarios under different conditions via pathway enrichment, all are participated by the same target proteins of Shan-Yao.

Astragali Radix, called Huang-Qi in Chinese, is a widely used traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) with therapeutic effects of “tonifying qi” that is identified in both TCM formulae, textbooks, and the Pharmacopoeia of the People’s Republic of China. However, the underlying mechanisms of the bioactive compounds and target proteins are still under exploration. In this study, based on evidenced bioactive compounds and targeted genes/proteins, different level functional annotations towards gene ontology biological processes and KEGG pathways were deployed and validated. As a result, the candidate molecular regulation network was constructed towards the “tonifying qi”. Functional annotation indicated one outstanding biological process called cell killing which is tightly associated with immunoenhancement. In short, the “tonifying qi” effect identified in TCM on Astragali Radix might be associated with immunoenhancement by various modern bio-medical studies.

Nonmetallic heteroatoms found in carbon nanomaterials act as active sites and exhibit excellent catalytic performance. Owing to structural complexity and the limitations of characterization technology, the identification of active sites in nanocarbon is challenging and controversial. Electron energy-loss spectroscopy is an electron microscope technique with high spatial resolution and a powerful tool for identifying the arrangement of heteroatoms. However, structural information regarding the configuration and distribution of heteroatoms is difficult to obtain using existing analytical methods. Herein, we have developed a method for the quantitative analysis of electron energy-loss near-edge structures to identify accurately nitrogen species in nanocarbon. Based on this approach, the relative amounts of nitrogen species were obtained from linear regression with calculated spectra. The concentration distribution of nanocarbon obtained by this method was consistent with the result of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis at different depths. Therefore, this fitting method can be used for the quantitative analysis of nitrogen K-edge structures. This provides a new strategy for studying the structure–activity relationships of carbon-based materials and the further design of custom nanocarbon catalysts with high active site densities.
