Since 2020, synchrotron radiation facilities in several Asia-Pacific countries have been collaborating in a major project called "SYNAPSE"(Synchrotrons for Neuroscience: an Asia-Pacific Scientific Enterprise). They use x-ray imaging to attack in a coordinated fashion one of the major issues in modern science: the structure of animal and human brains, including neurons and connections. The objective is to develop Google-like maps also including detailed structural and functional information for selected regions of interest. The sheer mass of data needed for the objective poses huge problems for the acquisition, processing, storage and use of images. In order to complete the task within a reasonable time, the key element of the SYNAPSE strategy is the parallel and coordinated work of several facilities on the same specimens. This article reviews different aspects of the enterprise, including the foundations of synchrotron radiation, coherence and of its role in advanced imaging, electron accelerators, x-ray optics and detectors. This will provide the foundation for an extensive presentation of the different components of SYNAPSE, with an overview of results already obtained within the consortium.

Understanding how the alveolar mechanics work in live lungs is essential for comprehending how the lung behaves during breathing. Due to the lack of appropriate imaging tools, previous research has suggested that alveolar morphologies are polyhedral rather than spherical based on a 2D examination of alveoli in fixed lungs. Here, we directly observe high-resolution 3D alveoli in live mice lungs utilizing synchrotron x-ray microtomography to show spherical alveolar morphologies from the live lungs. Our measurements from x-ray microtomography show high sphericity, low packing density, big alveolar size, and low osmotic pressure, indicating that spherical alveolar morphologies are natural in living lungs. The alveolar packing fraction is quite low in live lungs, where the spherical alveoli would behave like free bubbles, while the confinement of alveolar clusters in fixed lungs would lead to significant morphological deformations of the alveoli appearing polyhedral. Direct observations of the spherical alveolar shapes will help understand and treat lung disease and ventilation.

Synchrotron X-rays can be used to obtain highly detailed images of parts of the lung. However, micro-motion artifacts induced by such as cardiac motion impede quantitative visualization of the alveoli in the lungs. This paper proposes a method that applies a neural network for synchrotron X-ray Computed Tomography (CT) data to reconstruct the high-quality 3D structure of alveoli in intact mouse lungs at expiration, without needing ground-truth data. Our approach reconstructs the spatial sequence of CT images by using a deep-image prior with interpolated input latent variables, and in this way significantly enhances the images of alveolar structure compared with the prior art. The approach successfully visualizes 3D alveolar units of intact mouse lungs at expiration and enables us to measure the diameter of the alveoli. We believe that our approach helps to accurately visualize other living organs hampered by micro-motion.

Spatiotemporal pH monitoring of single living cells across rigid cell and organelle membranes has been challenging, despite its significance in understanding cellular heterogeneity. Here, we developed a mechanically robust yet tolerably thin nanowire waveguide that enables in situ monitoring of pH dynamics at desired cellular compartments via direct optical communication. By chemically labeling fluorescein at one end of a poly(vinylbenzyl azide) nanowire, we continuously monitored pH variations of different compartments inside a living cell, successfully observing organelle-exclusive pH homeostasis and stimuli-selective pH regulations. Importantly, it was demonstrated for the first time that, during the mammalian cell cycle, the nucleus displays pH homeostasis in interphase but a tidal pH curve in the mitotic phase, implying the existence of independent pH-regulating activities by the nuclear envelope. The rapid and accurate local pH-reporting capability of our nanowire waveguide would be highly valuable for investigating cellular behaviors under diverse biological situations in living cells.

Mapping the large neural networks of animal and human brains is a fundamental but so far elusive task, because of the massive amount of data and the consequent prohibitively long image taking and processing times. We developed an effective strategy called “AXON” (Accelerated X-ray Observation of Neurons) to solve this problem. AXON can achieve comprehensive whole-brain mapping within a reasonable time by combining fast image taking and processing, plus two other critical performances: three-dimensional (3D) imaging with high and isotropic spatial resolution, and multi-scale resolution. We successfully tested this strategy with coordinated experiments at four synchrotron facilities in Japan, Taiwan, Singapore and Korea on two animal models, Drosophila and mouse. Its performances notably allowed full 3D mapping of the Drosophila brain in a few days. With reasonable improvements, AXON can deliver full mapping of large animal and human brains on a realistic time scale of a few years.

We elucidate the evolution of the entrained air in drop impact on a wide range of liquids, using ultrafast X-ray phase-contrast imaging. We elaborate the retraction mechanism of the entrapped air film in terms of liquid viscosity. We found the criterion for deciding if the entrapped air evolves into single or double bubbles, as determined by competition among inertia, capillarity, and viscosity. Low viscosity and low surface tension induce a small daughter droplet encapsulated by a larger air shell bubble, forming an antibubble. We demonstrate a phase diagram for air evolution regarding hydrodynamics.

The direct optical wiring (DOW) technology which is based on the 3D writing of optically transparent polymer wires using a meniscus-guided method is employed to develop multi-mode optical interconnects for VCSEL-MMF applications. This DOW method, similar in concept to conventional electrical wire bonding, does not require any chemical reactions. DOW bonding is used to optically connect high-speed VCSELs and standard OM3 multi-mode fibers (MMFs). The resulting simplified lens-free transmitter modules show a high coupling efficiency (65%) and 12 Gbit/sec error-free transmission per-channel, which is satisfactory for optical HDMI 2.1 applications. In the presentation, the 4K-60Hz performance transmitted through the HDMI2.1 will be demonstrated and extended single-mode results introduced. We believe that DOW bonding can be a powerful platform technology for optical interconnect and photonic integration for innovative industrial and academic photonic applications.

When a liquid drop impacts on a heated substrate, it can remain deposited, or violently boil in contact, or lift off with or without ever touching the surface. The latter is known as the Leidenfrost effect. The duration and area of the liquid--substrate contact is highly relevant for the heat transfer, as well as other effects such as corrosion. However, most experimental studies rely on side view imaging to determine contact times, and those are often mixed with the time until the drop lifts off from the substrate. Here, we develop and validate a reliable method of contact time determination using high-speed X-ray and Total Internal Reflection measurements. We exemplarily compare contact and lift-off times on flat silicon and sapphire substrates. We show that drops can rebound even without formation of a complete vapor layer, with a wide range of lift-off times. On sapphire, we find a local minimum of lift-off times much shorter than by capillary rebound in the comparatively low-temperature regime of transition boiling / thermal atomization. Microbubbles have been used as a soft template to produce hollow structures for diverse applications in chemistry, materials science, and biomedicine. It is a challenge, however, to control their size and position at single-entity level. We report on an on-demand method to produce and place a single microbubble with programmed size and position. The method exploits scanning an electrolyte-filled micropipette to place a hydrogen (H2) bubble, generated by water electrolysis, on the desired position. The bubble growth is self-limited after the bubble size fits to the pipet aperture, yielding well-controlled bubble size. The bubble growth dynamics within the pipet is successfully investigated by a methodology that combines phase-contrast X-ray imaging and electric-current measurement. We show that the microbubbles, accurately controlled in size and position, can be used for the fabrication of various polypyrrole microcontainer arrays. Highly stretchable polymer composite microtubes of poly(methyl methacrylate)/polypyrrole (PMMA/PPy) were produced as a microarch shape by a meniscus-guided approach using colloidal solutions of the composite polymers. The polymer composite (PMMA/PPy) microarches show high stretchability up to 80% maintaining the electrical properties. Moreover, the microarches endure repeated stretching over 10 4 ( 9 × 10 2 ) cycles at 20% (80%) stretching without degradation of the electrical properties. The stretchable PMMA/PPy microtube arches are demonstrated as gas sensors with persistent sensitivities and response (recovery) times up to 80% stretching for various NH 3 concentrations. These robust properties of the stretchable PMMA/PPy microtube arch sensors can be suitable for portable sensing devices operating under extreme stretching conductions to be used in research laboratories and chemical processing industries for chemical leak detection and environmental monitoring.

Bulk AlN crystals grown by sublimation on SiC substrates exhibit relatively high dislocation densities. The kind of defect formation at early growth stages influences the structural quality of the grown crystals. In this work, the dislocation distribution near to the interface is understood through investigation of thin (≤1.5 mm) continuous (non-cracked) freestanding crystals obtained in one process with the evaporation of the substrates. The AlN specimens were characterized using synchrotron radiation imaging techniques. We revealed by triple-axis X-ray diffraction study that, near to the former interface, randomly distributed dislocations configured to form boundaries between $$\sim $$ 0.02 $$^{\circ }$$ misoriented sub-grains (from [0001] direction). Threading dislocation structure similar to that in epitaxial GaN films was not detected. To explain these observations, a theoretical model of misfit stress relaxation near the interface is suggested.

The physical vapor transport growth of aluminium nitride (AlN) layers was performed in one process with the evaporation of silicon carbide (SiC) substrates. In this paper, we show that the rate of SiC evaporation is slow in a narrow process window for AlN growth but increases in the presence of AlN vapor. The properties of the substrates influence the evaporation process; therefore an investigation is done to understand this phenomenon. We first describe the evaporation behavior of a SiC substrate depending on its size, thickness, structure and polarity. Then we demonstrate the surface morphology and structural quality of the AlN layers grown on C-polar SiC. In the case of a step-flow growth, our method allows us to obtain thin freestanding layers with moderate dislocation densities and rocking curve widths comparable to those of bulk crystals.

Dynamic wetting behaviors on soft solids are important to interpret complex biological processes from cell-substrate interactions. Despite intensive research studies over the past half-century, the underlying mechanisms of spreading behaviors are not clearly understood. The most interesting feature of wetting on soft matter is the formation of a "wetting ridge", a surface deformation by a competition between elasticity and capillarity. Dynamics of the wetting ridge formed at the three-phase contact line underlies the dynamic wetting behaviors, but remains largely unexplored mostly due to limitations in indirect observation. Here, we directly visualize wetting ridge dynamics during continuous- and stick-slip motions on a viscoelastic surface using X-ray microscopy. Strikingly, we discover that the ridge spreads spontaneously during stick and triggers contact line depinning (stick-to-slip transition) by changing the ridge geometry which weakens the contact line pinning. Finally, we clarify 'viscoelastic-braking', 'stick-slipping', and 'stick-breaking' spreading behaviors through the ridge dynamics. In stick-breaking, no ridge-spreading occurs and contact line pinning (hysteresis) is enhanced by cusp-bending while preserving a microscopic equilibrium at the ridge tip. We have furthered the understanding of spreading behaviors on soft solids and demonstrated the value of X-ray microscopy in elucidating various dynamic wetting behaviors on soft solids as well as puzzling biological issues.

By the use of high-resolution X-ray diffractometry and synchrotron radiation topography, the distribution of dislocations in AlN crystals grown on evaporating SiC substrates is studied. The growth of AlN layer in one process with the evaporation of SiC substrate gave the possibility to prevent the relaxation of thermal stresses through cracking of AlN during cooling the structure. The continuous 0.2-1.5 mm thick plates were used as the model objects for the study of dislocation structure near the AlN/SiC interface. Analysis of the broadening of the Bragg reflection peaks, the shape of scattering maps in reciprocal space and topographs showed that dislocations formed the mosaic structure, different from the distribution of threading dislocations in GaN epilayers. A theoretical model for misfit strain relaxation in the growing AlN layer is suggested. The results enable to clarify the dislocation processes during sublimation growth of industrial quality AlN crystals.

The morphology of a macrodefect in a single-crystal silicon carbide wafer has been investigated by the computer simulation of an experimental X-ray phase-contrast image. A micropipe, i.e., a long cavity with a small (elliptical in the general case) cross section, in a single crystal has been considered as a macrodefect. A far-field image of micropipe has been measured with the aid of synchrotron radiation without a monochromator. The parameters of micropipe elliptical cross section are determined based on one projection in two directions: parallel and perpendicular to the X-ray beam propagation direction, when scanning along the pipe axis. The results demonstrate the efficiency of the phase contrast method supplemented with computer simulation for studying such macrodefects when the defect position in the sample volume is unknown beforehand.

Quantitative probing of Cu(2+) ions naturally present in single living cells is realized by developing a quantum-dot-embedded nanowire-waveguide probe. The intracellular Cu(2+) ion concentration is quantified by direct monitoring of photoluminescence quenching during the insertion of the nanowire in a living neuron. The measured intracellular Cu(2+) ion concentration is 3.34 ± 1.04 × 10(-6) m (mean ± s.e.m.) in single hippocampal neurons.

Transient dynamics of a Leidenfrost vapor layer in drop impact is studied using x-ray imaging. It is shown that a vapor disk first forms, growing in thickness, following Fourier's law. At a certain thickness, ripples generate near the edge and propagate to the center by capillary waves, improving evaporation.

The characteristics of synchrotron X-ray sources--quite different from those of conventional sources--are exploited by several new imaging techniques. These techniques expand the capabilities of conventional radiology and find interesting application in special cases. We briefly review the basic principle, applications and limitations of the most important of them: monochromatic mammography, two-wavelength digital subtraction angiography, phase-contrast/edge-enhancement imaging, diffraction-enhanced imaging and microtomography.

The optical glow of ceramics that becomes established during the constant state of flash, known as Stage III in flash sintering experiments, is investigated. The specimen temperature in this state is obtained from in situ experiments at the Pohang Light Source II. The measurements of the specimen temperature agree very well with the predictions from the black body radiation model. The optical emission spectrum from the specimen is measured from the visible into the deep infrared, and compared with black body radiation that would have been expected from Joule heating. It is concluded that the specimens radiate by electroluminescence, which is ascribed to electron–hole recombination of excitons. The phenomenon is likely the same as discovered by Nernst at the turn of the twentieth century.

The dendritic planarity of Purkinje cells is critical for cerebellar circuit formation. In the absence of Crk and CrkL, the Reelin pathway does not function resulting in partial Purkinje cell migration and defective dendritogenesis. However, the relationships among Purkinje cell migration, dendritic development and Reelin signaling have not been clearly delineated. Here, we use synchrotron X-ray microscopy to obtain 3-D images of Golgi-stained Purkinje cell dendrites. Purkinje cells that failed to migrate completely exhibited conical dendrites with abnormal 3-D arborization and reduced dendritic complexity. Furthermore, their spines were fewer in number with a distorted morphology. In contrast, Purkinje cells that migrated successfully displayed planar dendritic and spine morphologies similar to normal cells, despite reduced dendritic complexity. These results indicate that, during cerebellar formation, Purkinje cells migrate into an environment that supports development of dendritic planarity and spine formation. While Reelin signaling is important for the migration process, it does not make a direct major contribution to dendrite formation. We report for the first time single nanowires (NWs) with ambipolar (positive/negative) photoresponse that changes sign depending on the illumination wavelength. The single NWs were grown by the meniscus-guided method using inorganic (ZnO nanoparticles)-organic (PEDOT:PSS) hybrid materials. The ambipolar photoresponse of the single NWs enabled us to develop an unprecedented spectrum-discriminating NW photodetector array.

Quantitative probing of the Cu(2+) ions naturally present in single living cells is accomplished by a probe made from a quantum-dot-embedded-nanowire waveguide. After inserting the active nanowire-based waveguide probe into single living cells, J. H. Je and co-workers directly observe photoluminescence (PL) quenching of the embedded quantum dots by the Cu(2+) ions diffused into the probe as described on page 4071. This results in quantitative measurement of intracellular Cu(2+) ions.

The fountain pen approach, as a means for transferring materials to substrates, has shown numerous incarnations in recent years for creating 2D micro/nanopatterns and even generating 3D free-form nanostructures using a variety of material “inks”. While the idea of filled reservoirs used to deliver material to a substrate via a capillary remains unchanged since antiquity, the advent of precise micromanipulation systems and functional material “inks” allows the extension of this mechanism to more high-tech applications. Herein, the recent growth in meniscus guided fountain pen approaches for benchtop micro/nanofabrication, which has occurred in the last decade, is discussed. Particular attention is given to the theory, equipment, and experimentation encompassing this unique direct writing approach. A detailed exploration of the diverse ink systems and functional device applications borne from this strategy is put forth to reveal its rapid expansion to a broad range of scientific and engineering disciplines. As such, this informative review is provided for researchers considering adoption of this recent advancement of a familiar technology.

Colloids (colloidal particles or nanoparticles) and their in-situ characterizations are important topics in colloid and interface science. In-situ visualization of colloids with X-ray microscopy is a growing frontier. Here, after a brief introduction on the method, we focus on its application for identifying nanoscale wettability of colloidal particles at fluid interfaces, which is a critical factor in colloidal self-assembly. We discuss a quantitative study on colloidal wettability with two microscopic methods: (i) X-ray microscopy by visualizing natural oil–water interfaces and (ii) confocal microscopy by visualizing fluorescently-labeled interfaces. Both methods show consistent estimation results in colloid–fluid interfacial tensions. This comparison strongly suggests a feasibility of X-ray microscopy as a promising in-situ protocol in colloid research, without fluorescent staining. Finally, we address a prospect of X-ray imaging for colloid and interface science.

We propose a theoretical explanation for the experimentally observed feature in phase contrast images of micropipes in silicon carbide in a white synchrotron radiation (SR) beam, which consists in the fact that the contrast of various micropipes or various regions of the same micropipe is of different colors. The contrast is most often white (the intensity is higher than the background) at the center and black at the edges; however, the sign sometimes changes, and the contrast becomes black at the center and white at the edges. We discuss the results of experiments performed at the SR source in Pohang, Republic of Korea. The cause of the contrast change can be a change in the angle between the micropipe axis and the SR beam direction. At not overly small angles, the phase progression in a section of the micropipe is small and the contrast is standard. If the angle becomes very small, the size of the longitudinal section of the micropipe by the beam increases, which leads to wave field oscillations in the region of the section. At large distances in the white beam, these oscillations are averaged, and averaging results in black contrast.

It has been generally accepted that any reaction between micropipes in silicon carbide (SiC) crystals requires a direct contact of the micropipes. We propose a new model of contact-free reactions that are realized through the emission and absorption of full-core dislocations by micropipes. This model can explain the correlated reduction in micropipe radii in the samples with low micropipe densities which has been observed in synchrotron radiation (SR) phase contrast images supported by computer simulations. We provide a theoretical description of a contact-free reaction between two parallel micropipes.

An interesting feature in phase-contrast images of micropipes in silicon carbide in white synchrotron radiation beam was experimentally studied and theoretically explained. This feature consists in that a change in micropipe cross-section sizes does not lead to changes in its image sizes, but has an effect only on the contrast. The experiment was performed on the synchrotron radiation source in Pohang, South Korea. On the one hand, this effect is explained by a small phase progression caused by the micropipe, and, on the other hand, by satisfying the conditions for Fraunhofer diffraction, when the transverse micropipe size is smaller than the first Fresnel zone diameter. As a rule, the near-field conditions are satisfied in X-ray optics when only object edges are imaged. However, micropipes are so small that the standard edge theory is inapplicable. A universal intensity distribution profile was obtained for micropipes with very small cross sections.

Sliced SiC boule grown by physical vapor transport is investigated using synchrotron white beam phase contrast imaging combined with Bragg diffraction. The evolution of defects is revealed. In the early growth stage, foreign polytype inclusions not only induce massive generation of full-core dislocations and dislocated micropipes but also attract them, forming slit-type pores at the boundaries of inclusions. In the intermediate stage, when inclusions stop to grow and become overgrown by the matrix, the pore density significantly reduces, which is attributed to their transformation into new micropipes. In the later stage, the micropipe density decreases, providing evidence for their partial annihilation and healing. Mechanisms for the evolution from inclusions to pores and finally to micropipes during the crystal growth are further discussed.

Heteroepitaxial ZnO films were grown by pulsed laser deposition on various substrates such as GaN-buffered C-Al 2 O 3 , C-Al 2 O 3 , A-Al 2 O 3 , and R-Al 2 O 3 . The epitaxy nature of the films was investigated mainly by synchrotron X-ray diffraction. The results showed that the GaN interlayer plays a positive role in growing an unstrained, well-aligned epitaxial ZnO film on the basal plane of Al 2 O 3 . Importantly, the ZnO film grown on R-Al 2 O 3 has two differently aligned domains. The dominant (1 1 0) oriented domain has much better alignment in the in-plane direction than the minor portion of (0 0 1) oriented domain, while in the out-of-plane direction the two domains have almost the same mosaic distribution.

Crack-free interfaces can be achieved in wafer-bonded Ge/Si by using patterned grooves. Using synchrotron radiation phase-contrast imaging and scanning electron microscopy, we observe cracking that is induced by thermal stresses in thin (hGe ⩽ 0.5hSi) Ge wafers on smooth Si substrates. Theoretical calculation shows a remarkable reduction in thermal stresses in Ge wafer bonded to grooved Si substrate. We demonstrate the fabrication of crack-free Ge/Si (hGe = 0.5hSi) structure by patterned grooves, as confirmed by an ohmic I–V characteristic across the heterojunction.

Au/TiO2 nanocomposite particles were synthesized by a method based on intense X-ray irradiation without adding any reducing agent or stabilizer. The nanocomposite exhibits promising photocatalytic and biological properties at physiologically relevant concentration ([Au] = 0.028 mM, [TiO2] = 0.5 mM). The structure and photocatalysis were examined by X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy demonstrating that gold nanoparticles of 2-5 nm size were successfully deposited on TiO2 nanoparticle surfaces. The nanocomposite exhibited good colloidal stability within a typical cellular environment and was nontoxic to cancer cell according to evaluations under controlled conditions. The Au/TiO2 nanoparticles were also found to enhance the photocatalytic efficiency of UV radiation and even more that of X-ray radiation. In vitro studies indicated that the cell-killing effect under X-ray irradiation is more pronounced with the addition of Au/TiO2 nanoparticles than of bare TiO2 nanoparticles. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. Colloidal Ag nanoparticles were formed by X-ray irradiation in the presence of a polymer. This new synthesis method is simple, rapid and leads to a high production yield. Compared to the citrate-reduced Ag colloidal, polymer-protected Ag nanoparticles are smaller in size and more stable—and therefore suitable for biomedical application—as verified by TEM observation, XAFS measurement and optical characterization. Ag nanoparticles so produced were also visualized in solution and in real time by a visible light microscope based on dark field light scattering. The color-derived size and distribution of Ag nanoparticles correlates well with the hydrodynamic size data.

The elliptical micropipes in SiC are studied using computer simulation of the phase contrast images. The experimental measurements of "white beam" images are performed at third-generation synchrotron radiation source in Pohang, Korea. We reveal that the transmitted X-ray spectrum of a high brilliance with a pronounced maximum at 16 keV enables to form partially coherent images even for transparent objects. The computer simulation allows one to automatically determine the diameters of elliptical cross-sections based on best matches between calculated and experimental intensity profiles. We show that the micropipes studied here have extended elliptical cross-sections, sometimes rotating around the micropipe axis.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to evaluate the feasibility of phase contrast X-ray microtomography and microradiography, using a polychromatic synchrotron X-ray, for analysis of the mouse lung microstructure. Materials and Methods Normal mice were used for experiments. Some of the mouse lungs were prepared by the lung fixation-inflation method. The resulting sponge-like inflated lung samples were used for microtomography. The remaining mouse lungs were cut into 10 um sections and were used for microradiography and optical microscopic correlation. The experiments on mouse lung samples were performed at the 7B2 beamline of the Pohang Light Source in Korea. Results Phase contrast X-ray microtomography of inflated lung samples showed individual alveolar structure on 3-D reconstruction. Phase contrast microradiographs of thin lung samples showed microstructure of lung, such as alveoli and bronchioles, and were well correlated with optical microscopic images. Conclusions The results indicate that the phase contrast X-ray microtomography and microradiography using polychromatic synchrotron X-ray is feasible for evaluation of microstructure of the lung.

A method of computer simulation of phase-contrast images in white synchrotron radiation has been developed to determine the section parameters of micropipes in silicon carbide. The experiments have been carried out using the third-generation synchrotron radiation source the Pohang Light Source (South Korea). The effective spectrum of the synchrotron radiation that forms of an image has been shown to have a relatively sharp maximum at an energy of 16 keV, which makes it possible to conserve coherency within the required limits. A computer program has been developed that automatically determines the diameters of an elliptic section of a micropipe from the condition of coincidence of calculated and experimental profiles. It has been shown that the studied micropipes have a strongly stretched elliptic section that can twist when moving along the pipe axis.

The advanced characteristics of synchrotron light has led in recent years to the development of a series of new experimental techniques to investigate chemical and physical properties on a microscopic scale. Although originally developed for materials science and biomedical research, such techniques find increasing applications in other domains – and could be quite useful for the study and conservation of cultural heritage. Specifically, they can nondestructively provide detailed chemical composition information that can be useful for the identification of specimens, for the discovery of historical links based on the sources of chemical raw materials and on chemical processes, for the analysis of damage, their causes and remedies and for many other issues. Likewise, morphological and structural information on a microscopic scale is useful for the identification, study and preservation of many different cultural and historical specimens. We concentrate here on two classes of techniques: in the first case, photoemission spectromicroscopy. This is the result of the advanced evolution of photoemission techniques like ESCA (Electron Microscopy for Chemical Analysis). By combining high lateral resolution to spectroscopy, photoemission spectromicroscopy can deliver fine chemical information on a microscopic scale in a nondestructive fashion. The second class of techniques exploits the high lateral coherence of modern synchrotron sources, a byproduct of the quest for high brightness or brilliance. We will see that such techniques now push radiology into the submicron scale and the submillisecond time domain. Furthermore, they can be implemented in a tomographic mode, increasing the information and becoming potentially quite useful for the analysis of cultural heritage specimens.

The existence of maximum human lifespan remains a puzzle in aging research. Maximum human lifespan is believed to be around 125 years, whereas current demographic trends seem to show no limitation. To reconcile this contrast, the estimation of maximum human lifespan requires an adequate mathematical model. However, sparse data of available old-age mortality pattern make the estimation impossible. Here we suggest an extended Weibull model for the estimation using a proper mathematical method based on survival probability pattern. We find a tendency that survival probability is maximized in modern human survival curves. Based on such tendency, we develop an estimation method for maximum human lifespan and indeed obtain about 126 years from periodic life tables for Swedish female between 1950 and 2005. Despite uncertainty from available mortality data, our approach may offer quantitative biodemographic opportunities linking aging and survival kinetics.

We present the three-dimensional (3D) growth of polypyrrole (PPy) microstructures with high aspect ratios (HAR) by a localized electropolymerization. The radicals formed by an oxidation of Py monomer is localized on the targeting area due to a confinement of electric field, forming a PPy structure. We found that a reversal point at which the relative field strengths of E-c (center of the grown structure) and E-e (edge) are reversed is a critical factor in determining the growth characteristic of the 3D PPy structure. A porous structure with open and closed pores is produced below the reversal point by the hydrogen bubble trapping in a gap between the microelectrode and the grown structure. Above the reversal point, a structure with dense and uniform features is obtained by a steady supply of monomer in the gap without bubble trapping.

The fabrication of gold Fresnel zone plates, by a combination of e-beam lithography and electrodeposition, with a 30 nm outermost zone width and a 450 nm-thick structure is described. The e-beam lithography process was implemented with a careful evaluation of applied dosage, tests of different bake-out temperatures and durations for the photoresist, and the use of a developer without methylisobutylketone. Electrodeposition with a pulsed current mode and with a specially designed apparatus produced the desired high-aspect-ratio nanostructures. The fabricated zone plates were examined by electron microscopy and their performances were assessed using a transmission X-ray microscope. The results specifically demonstrated an image resolution of 40 nm.

Experiments performed using the novel technique of real-time microradiography with coherent X-rays provided clear experimental evidence of the “fibrilization” phenomenon of electrical conductive microspheres between a copper microelectrode (anode) and platinum plate (cathode) in electrorheological fluids under an applied voltage (about 2 kV/mm). The surface-conductive polymeric microspheres were prepared by the adsorption of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) on the surface of poly(methylmethacrylate) microspheres (6.5 μm). We also observed the process of MWCNT adsorption on the polymeric microspheres in the MWCNT dispersion containing surfactants and the assembly of MWCNTs-coated microspheres during their sedimentation in real-time by microradiography.

We have investigated the atomic arrangement of a barium (Ba)-induced Si(111)-3×2 surface by using surface-sensitive synchrotron X-ray scattering. In-plane fractional-order reflections obtained from three rotational domains of 3×1 symmetry have been used to examine several competing structural models including the honeycomb-chain-channel (HCC) and the double-π-bonded chain (DπC) models. By fitting two different data sets, both the goodness-of-the fits χ2 and the residuum R-factor strongly favor the HCC over the DπC model. We conclude that a Ba-paired HCC structure with a \(\frac{1}{3}\) monolayer of Ba coverage best describes the Ba-induced 3×2 surface with a Ba-Ba interatomic spacing d = 1.93 A.

Reductant, stabilizer-free colloidal gold solutions were fabricated by a new room-temperature synchrotron X-ray irradiation method. The influence of process parameters such as the pH value and the exposure time on the structure of gold nanoparticles was investigated. The mechanisms underlying the X-ray-triggered reduction of gold ions and the formation of gold clusters are discussed in detail. The X-ray irradiation derived highly concentrated gold nanoparticles are readily to be re-dispersed and possess suitable colloidal stability within cellular environment. The characterization included a study of the possible cytotoxicity for the EMT-6 tumor cell line: the negative results indicate that the gold clusters produced with our approach are biocompatible.

The formation of colloidal unmodified (naked) gold nanoparticles is investigated by irradiation of a precursor solution with X-rays from a synchrotron source. An interesting morphological evolution as a function of exposure time, from cross-linked network-like structure to individual particles, has been discovered. The particle size decreased with the exposure time and was influenced by the ionic strength of the precursor solution. Contrary to gamma-ray exposure, an OH radical scavenger was not required for cluster formation.

Adverse health effects are associated with the inhalation of a variety of atmospheric particles. To study the lung injuries caused by aerosol PM2.5, synchrotron radiation (SR) X-ray phase-contrast imaging technique was used. Nude mice were inoculated with PM2.5 samples collected from suburban area (JD), industrial area (BS) and traffic tunnel (DPQ) of Shanghai. From X-ray phase-contrast images of lung tissues, apart from blood vessels and structures of alveoli, even hemorrhage spots of several microns caused by the inflammation were clearly observed. The studies showed that the PM2.5 samples collected from the traffic tunnel (DPQ) produced higher level of lung injury, followed by the aerosol samples collected from industrial area (BS) and suburban area (JD).
