Several phytochemicals, such as extracts and essential oils, are among the ecological alternatives that have been studied for the control of pathogens that affect humans, animals, and plants. Essential oils are aromatic oily liquids obtained from plant material and their use to control pathogens is widespread. However, they can have adverse effects when taken in high concentrations. The aim of this study was to evaluate the survival and palatability of a balanced-energy protein diet with the addition of two essential oils, Lippia junelliana (Mold.) Tronc. and Elionorus muticus (Spreng.) Kuntze, in newly hatched worker bees (Apis mellifera L.) during a period of 15 days. Consumption and number of live bees were measured daily for each treatment. For L. junelliana, our results showed a non-toxic trend in long-term survival trials (15 days) at low concentrations. In the case of E. muticus, a toxic effect with low survival was observed at all concentrations. Both essential oils showed good palatability, even at toxic levels. We study two Bayesian (Reference Intrinsic and Jeffreys prior) and two frequentist (MLE and PWM) approaches to calibrating the Pareto and related distributions. Three of these approaches are compared in a simulation study and all four to investigate how much equity risk capital banks subject to Basel II banking regulations must hold. The Reference Intrinsic approach, which is invariant under one-to-one transformations of the data and parameter, performs better when fitting a generalised Pareto distribution to data simulated from a Pareto distribution and is competitive in the case study on equity capital requirements

Due to freely available, tailored software, Bayesian statistics is fast becoming the dominant paradigm in archaeological chronology construction. Such software provides users with powerful tools for Bayesian inference for chronological models with little need to undertake formal study of statistical modelling or computer programming. This runs the risk that it is reduced to the status of a black-box which is not sensible given the power and complexity of the modelling tools it implements. In this paper we seek to offer intuitive insight to ensure that readers from the archaeological research community who use Bayesian chronological modelling software will be better able to make well educated choices about the tools and techniques they adopt. Our hope is that they will then be both better informed about their own research designs and better prepared to offer constructively critical assessments of the modelling undertaken by others.

Nineteen samples from the aerial parts in bloom of Acantholippia seriphioides (Verbenaceae) were collected in three provinces belonging to the Cuyo region of Argentina. The essential oils were obtained by hydrodistillation, yielding between 0.57 and 2.46% (v/w). On the basis of the 13 main compounds determined by GC-FID-MS, representing the 87.2 and 95.3% of the total identified, four chemotypes were determined: carvacrol, thymol, cis and trans-dihydrocarvone and linalool-geraniol. The co-occurrence of different chemotypes in a same population indicates that the sample collection must be carefully done with the aid of an in situ olfactory testing of the plants, since no morphological differences at first sight were observed among them. The results showed in this study suggest that the pattern of variations for this species exists throughout its natural distribution area. Se colectaron 19 muestras de partes aéreas en floración de Acantholippia seriphioides (Verbenaceae) de tres provincias de la región de Cuyo de la Argentina. Los aceites esenciales fueron obtenidos por hidrodestilación, arrojando rendimientos entre 0.57 y 2.46% (v/p). A partir de la determinación por GC-FID-MS de los 13 compuestos principales, que representaban entre el 87.2 y 95.3% del total de los identificados, fueron determinados cuatro quimiotipos: carvacrol, timol, cis y trans-dihidrocarvona, y linalol-geraniol. La co-ocurrencia de diferentes quimiotipos en una misma población indica que la colecta debe ser realizada con la ayuda de un examen olfatorio in situ de la planta, ya que, a primera vista no se observan diferencias morfológicas entre ellas. OBJETIVOVerificar el efecto analgésico de la saturación sensorial (Sat) y compararlo con la lactancia materna (LM) y un grupo control.MATERIAL Y MÉTODOSEnsayo clínico, randomizado con 167 recién nacidos a término sanos, en quiénes se cuantificó la intensidad de dolor agudo al recibir una vacuna (hepatitis B) a las 48 horas de vida. Se formaron tres grupos de manera aleatoria: grupo 1 (control, sin método analgésico), grupo 2 (analgesia con LM) y grupo 3 (analgesia con Sat); los estímulos sensoriales fueron: táctil (caricias de la madre sobre el rostro y espalda), olfatorio (colonia sin alcohol), auditivo (voz de la madre), gustativo (lactancia materna), visual (rostro de la madre frente a su bebé). Se utilizó la Escala para Dolor Agudo Neonatal (DAN: Douleur Aiguë du Nouveau-né), con un score de dolor del 1 al 10 y 7 categorías de dolor.RESULTADOSEl grupo con saturación sensorial tuvo menos dolor (3.02 en la escala de DAN); el grupo dos (lactancia materna): 4.15, y control: 9.02. Hubo diferencia significativa entre grupos. Dolor extremo, se presentó en 60% del grupo control, 3,8% en el grupo lactancia materna y 0% en el grupo con saturación sensorial. In this paper we propose a model-based method to cluster units within a panel. The underlying model is autoregressive and non-Gaussian, allowing for both skewness and fat tails, and the units are clustered according to their dynamic behaviour and equilibrium level. Inference is addressed from a Bayesian perspective and model comparison is conducted using the formal tool of Bayes factors. Particular attention is paid to prior elicitation and posterior propriety. We suggest priors that require little subjective input from the user and possess hierarchical structures that enhance the robustness of the inference. Two examples illustrate the methodology: one analyses economic growth of OECD countries and the second one investigates employment growth of Spanish manufacturing firms

Several hydrophones have been constructe d exploiting the advantages of the MiniCan design. One of them is unamplifie d and two are amplified. Comparison in sensitivity, self-noise, size a nd price with known and reli able commercial hydrophones yield the following results. The unamplified MiniCan has sensitivity 22 dB re 1 V/μPa higher than a Brüel & Kjær type 8103 up to 20 KHz and the amplified MiniCans are compared to their similar and relatively expensive commercial hydrophones. The self- noise level of the amplified MiniCans is significantly lower than those of the B&K 8106 and Reson TC4032. The size of these preamplif ied MiniCan units is at least 18 times smaller in volume than the largest of the aforementioned. Moreover, the cost of the piezoceramic material and electronics comp onents is around $30 USD, compared to purchase prices of $3095 and $2500 US D for the B&K 8106 and Reson TC4032 respectively. EC funded STriTuVaD project aims to test, through a phase IIb clinical trial, two of the most advanced therapeutic vaccines against tuberculosis. In parallel, we have extended the Universal Immune System Simulator to include all relevant determinants of such clinical trial, to establish its predictive accuracy against the individual patients recruited in the trial, to use it to generate digital patients and predict their response to the HRT being tested, and to combine them to the observations made on physical patients using a new in silico-augmented clinical trial approach that uses a Bayesian adaptive design. This approach, where found effective could drastically reduce the cost of innovation in this critical sector of public healthcare. One of the most challenging task is to develop a methodology to reproduce biological diversity of the subjects that have to be simulated, i.e., provide an appropriate strategy for the generation of libraries of digital patients. This has been achieved through the the creation of the initial immune system repertoire in a stochastic way, and though the identification of a "vector of features" that combines both biological and pathophysiological parameters that personalize the digital patient to reproduce the physiology and the pathophysiology of the subject., 5 pages
