A neuromorphic event-based camera was fitted to Electro Optic Systems’s 1.8 m telescope at Mount Stromlo in Canberra and used to observe 14 satellites in a variety of orbit regimes. Unique patterns in the fluctuations of each satellite’s event rate were analyzed to assess the utility of event-based sensors for satellite characterization. Event-rate curves were shown to be useful for determining the rotation rate of nonstabilized satellites, constraining the range of possible satellite orientations, and for differentiating between materials responsible for bright specular reflections in some cases.

Many people of African ancestry have lower absolute neutrophil counts (ANCs) without increased risk for infection. This is associated with the Duffy-null phenotype (nonexpression of the Duffy antigen on red blood cells), which is commonly found in those of African descent. Currently, there are no studies that compare the ANC of individuals with Duffy-null phenotype to those with Duffy non-null phenotypes within a self-identified Black population. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of Duffy status on ANCs based on complete blood counts with differential and Duffy testing in a healthy population of self-identified Black individuals at a single primary care center. This study found that 66.7% (80 of 120) of Black individuals have the Duffy-null phenotype and that there is a significant difference in ANCs between Duffy-null and Duffy non-null individuals (median, 2820 cells per μL vs 5005 cells per μL; P < .001). Alpha thalassemia major (ATM) is a hemoglobinopathy that usually results in perinatal demise if in utero transfusions (IUTs) are not performed. We established an international registry (NCT04872179) to evaluate the impact of IUTs on survival to discharge (primary outcome) as well as perinatal and neurodevelopmental secondary outcomes. Forty-nine patients were diagnosed prenatally, 11 were diagnosed postnatally, and all 11 spontaneous survivor genotypes had preserved embryonic zeta-globin levels. We compared 3 groups of patients; group 1, prenatally diagnosed and alive at hospital discharge (n = 14), group 2, prenatally diagnosed and deceased perinatally (n = 5), and group 3, postnatally diagnosed and alive at hospital discharge (n = 11). Group 1 had better outcomes than groups 2 and 3 in terms of the resolution of hydrops, delivery closer to term, shorter hospitalizations, and more frequent average or greater neurodevelopmental outcomes. Earlier IUT initiation was correlated with higher neurodevelopmental (Vineland-3) scores (r = −0.72, P = .02). Preterm delivery after IUT was seen in 3/16 (19%) patients who continued their pregnancy. When we combined our data with those from 2 published series, patients who received ≥2 IUTs had better outcomes than those with 0 to 1 IUT, including resolution of hydrops, delivery at ≥34 weeks gestation, and 5-minute appearance, pulse, grimace, activity, and respiration scores ≥7. Neurodevelopmental assessments were normal in 17/18 of the ≥2 IUT vs 5/13 of the 0 to 1 IUT group (OR 2.74; P = .01). Thus, fetal transfusions enable the survival of patients with ATM and normal neurodevelopment, even in those patients presenting with hydrops. Nondirective prenatal counseling for expectant parents should include the option of IUTs.

Older patients represent an inordinate proportion of intensive care unit (ICU) admissions and ICU mortality associated with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). In this retrospective cohort study, we examine 198 patients, aged 18 years or older, admitted to the ICU from March to June 2020. We aim to understand the relationships between age, number of comorbidities, and independent living prior to admission on outcomes of mortality, length of stay, renal failure, respiratory failure, and shock. In this cohort, we find that overall mortality was associated with respiratory failure severity (for every decrease of P:F by 50, odds ratio (OR) 2.98 (1.65–6.08)), acute renal failure (OR 4.61 (1.2–19.7)), and age 65 or greater (OR: 3.7 (1.86–7.36)). This paper seeks to examine Hobbes’s credentials as a defender of religious freedom along three dimensions. The first section analyzes what might be called Hobbes’s core position on freedom of conscience and worship; it is shown how, by means of a characteristically reductionist strategy, he seeks to persuade the reader that the absolute state allows room for freedom of conscience and worship in all ways that they have reason to care about. The second section turns to Hobbes’s praise of Independency and addresses the issue whether it is consistent with his core position; it is argued that though it supplements this position it does not represent a fundamental departure from it. The final section takes up the perennially fascinating issue of the relationship between Locke’s mature defence of religious toleration and the teachings of his great precursor in the social contract tradition. Without seeking to minimize the differences I argue that Locke is able to adapt Hobbesian themes to his own distinctive purposes.

[Abstract] In spring 2020 due to the COVID–19 pandemic there was a sudden shift to Emergency Remote Teaching (ERT). Although Japan is a technology rich society, the use of technology in education had been limited up until then. This pilot study explores the experiences of Japanese university EFL teachers from spring 2020 until summer 2022. A survey was formulated to investigate: to what extent EFL teachers in Japan are likely to continue using some of the digital tools they started using during ERT, what level of training was provided and if that assistance was found useful by teachers during ERT, and what styles of ERT classes were offered by institutions throughout the three Japanese academic years under investigation and if they indicate any new trends as universities shift away from ERT. This paper will look at the overall results (N=31) of the survey, as well as the voluntary open-ended responses that offer further important insights to the results. Results showed positive attitudes towards continued use of digital tools, but that training and support were lacking during ERT. In concluding the paper, the authors offer suggestions for the future use of technology beyond the pandemic.

Virtual field trips (VFTs) are an effective form of geoscience teaching to support or provide alternatives to in-person field trips. We report on the design and implementation of the Iceland VFT aimed at teaching physical volcanology in a third-year undergraduate course. An evaluation exercise administered following the VFT allowed students to reflect on their learning and provided insights into the student experience. Students found the VFT an interesting and motivating learning experience due to the three-dimensional visualisations, entertaining videos, and being exposed to ‘real life’ volcanic environments. Students made suggestions on how to improve the VFT, including minimising technical difficulties and completing the VFT at home to allow more time for classroom discussions. These suggestions were implemented in the second iteration of the VFT and informed the development of two massive open online courses and switch to a flipped classroom.

Background: The scale of COVID-19 and its well documented long-term sequelae support a need to understand long-term outcomes including frailty. Methods: This prospective cohort study recruited adults who had survived hospitalisation with clinically diagnosed COVID-19 across 35 sites in the UK (PHOSP-COVID). The burden of frailty was objectively measured using Fried's Frailty Phenotype (FFP). The primary outcome was the prevalence of each FFP group—robust (no FFP criteria), pre-frail (one or two FFP criteria) and frail (three or more FFP criteria)—at 5 months and 1 year after discharge from hospital. For inclusion in the primary analysis, participants required complete outcome data for three of the five FFP criteria. Longitudinal changes across frailty domains are reported at 5 months and 1 year post-hospitalisation, along with risk factors for frailty status. Patient-perceived recovery and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) were retrospectively rated for pre-COVID-19 and prospectively rated at the 5 month and 1 year visits. This study is registered with ISRCTN, number ISRCTN10980107. Findings: Between March 5, 2020, and March 31, 2021, 2419 participants were enrolled with FFP data. Mean age was 57.9 (SD 12.6) years, 933 (38.6%) were female, and 429 (17.7%) had received invasive mechanical ventilation. 1785 had measures at both timepoints, of which 240 (13.4%), 1138 (63.8%) and 407 (22.8%) were frail, pre-frail and robust, respectively, at 5 months compared with 123 (6.9%), 1046 (58.6%) and 616 (34.5%) at 1 year. Factors associated with pre-frailty or frailty were invasive mechanical ventilation, older age, female sex, and greater social deprivation. Frail participants had a larger reduction in HRQoL compared with before their COVID-19 illness and were less likely to describe themselves as recovered. Interpretation: Physical frailty and pre-frailty are common following hospitalisation with COVID-19. Improvement in frailty was seen between 5 and 12 months although two-thirds of the population remained pre-frail or frail. This suggests comprehensive assessment and interventions targeting pre-frailty and frailty beyond the initial illness are required. Copyright © 2023 The Author(s). Background: Sleep disturbance is common following hospital admission both for COVID-19 and other causes. The clinical associations of this for recovery after hospital admission are poorly understood despite sleep disturbance contributing to morbidity in other scenarios. We aimed to investigate the prevalence and nature of sleep disturbance after discharge following hospital admission for COVID-19 and to assess whether this was associated with dyspnoea. Methods: CircCOVID was a prospective multicentre cohort substudy designed to investigate the effects of circadian disruption and sleep disturbance on recovery after COVID-19 in a cohort of participants aged 18 years or older, admitted to hospital for COVID-19 in the UK, and discharged between March, 2020, and October, 2021. Participants were recruited from the Post-hospitalisation COVID-19 study (PHOSP-COVID). Follow-up data were collected at two timepoints: an early time point 2–7 months after hospital discharge and a later time point 10–14 months after hospital discharge. Sleep quality was assessed subjectively using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index questionnaire and a numerical rating scale. Sleep quality was also assessed with an accelerometer worn on the wrist (actigraphy) for 14 days. Participants were also clinically phenotyped, including assessment of symptoms (ie, anxiety [Generalised Anxiety Disorder 7-item scale questionnaire], muscle function [SARC-F questionnaire], dyspnoea [Dyspnoea-12 questionnaire] and measurement of lung function), at the early timepoint after discharge. Actigraphy results were also compared to a matched UK Biobank cohort (non-hospitalised individuals and recently hospitalised individuals). Multivariable linear regression was used to define associations of sleep disturbance with the primary outcome of breathlessness and the other clinical symptoms. PHOSP-COVID is registered on the ISRCTN Registry (ISRCTN10980107). Findings: 2320 of 2468 participants in the PHOSP-COVID study attended an early timepoint research visit a median of 5 months (IQR 4–6) following discharge from 83 hospitals in the UK. Data for sleep quality were assessed by subjective measures (the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index questionnaire and the numerical rating scale) for 638 participants at the early time point. Sleep quality was also assessed using device-based measures (actigraphy) a median of 7 months (IQR 5–8 months) after discharge from hospital for 729 participants. After discharge from hospital, the majority (396 [62%] of 638) of participants who had been admitted to hospital for COVID-19 reported poor sleep quality in response to the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index questionnaire. A comparable proportion (338 [53%] of 638) of participants felt their sleep quality had deteriorated following discharge after COVID-19 admission, as assessed by the numerical rating scale. Device-based measurements were compared to an age-matched, sex-matched, BMI-matched, and time from discharge-matched UK Biobank cohort who had recently been admitted to hospital. Compared to the recently hospitalised matched UK Biobank cohort, participants in our study slept on average 65 min (95% CI 59 to 71) longer, had a lower sleep regularity index (–19%; 95% CI –20 to –16), and a lower sleep efficiency (3·83 percentage points; 95% CI 3·40 to 4·26). Similar results were obtained when comparisons were made with the non-hospitalised UK Biobank cohort. Overall sleep quality (unadjusted effect estimate 3·94; 95% CI 2·78 to 5·10), deterioration in sleep quality following hospital admission (3·00; 1·82 to 4·28), and sleep regularity (4·38; 2·10 to 6·65) were associated with higher dyspnoea scores. Poor sleep quality, deterioration in sleep quality, and sleep regularity were also associated with impaired lung function, as assessed by forced vital capacity. Depending on the sleep metric, anxiety mediated 18–39% of the effect of sleep disturbance on dyspnoea, while muscle weakness mediated 27–41% of this effect. Interpretation: Sleep disturbance following hospital admission for COVID-19 is associated with dyspnoea, anxiety, and muscle weakness. Due to the association with multiple symptoms, targeting sleep disturbance might be beneficial in treating the post-COVID-19 condition. Interwar Culture from Adam Matthew is a rich and multidisciplinary resource bringing together numerous periodicals from the interwar period (1919‐1939) and covering a wide range of topics such as fashion, entertainment, home and family life, the women's movement, and children's literature. The collection consists of two modules: one covering the 1920s (which has been released) and another covering the 1930s (which is coming soon, presumably by 2023). Module 1 contains thousands of individual periodical issues from 27 different titles, ranging from the familiar (The Strand, Homes & Gardens) to the less familiar and, in many cases, previously unavailable online (Peg's Paper, Chums). Content ranges from highbrow fashion magazines like Art, Goût, Beauté, and Femina to low-priced homemaking titles such as Woman's Home Companion to children's publications such as The Modern Boy and The Schoolgirls’ Weekly. The collection also includes distinctive titles such as The National Advocate, purportedly the United States’ oldest temperance publication; The Labour Woman and Woman's Weekly, publications aimed specifically at working women; and Time and Tide, a uniquely female-produced publication covering politics and culture. Theatre Magazine, known for its sumptuous color photographs, is another standout title in the collection. The interwar period was a time of great cultural change and technological innovation, and the evolution of entertainment, culture, and fashion can be traced in various ways in the pages of these periodicals. With many of the included titles targeting women in particular, these periodicals helped define as well as record the changing ideas and fashions of this era, such as the move away from Victorian ideals to the more practical ideas and fashions of the flapper generation and the burgeoning world of working women. Boasting visually crisp and clear images from the pages of the original publications and a user-friendly search/browse interface, Interwar Culture has much to offer researchers across numerous disciplines as well as casual users simply interested in the significant and tumultuous years of the 1920s and 1930s.

Context House mice (Mus musculus) are the main drivers of biodiversity declines on Gough Island (6500 ha; 40°21′S, 009°53′W), central South Atlantic. A mouse eradication operation was planned, the largest global attempt targeting only this species. Understanding and managing challenges of operating at such scales are crucial for maximising the chance of eradication success. The Gough Island mouse eradication attempt was implemented between June and August 2021, after years of planning and trials. We expected poor weather and negligible non-target bait consumption. Aims We aimed to assess the impact of expected and unexpected challenges faced during the eradication operation on Gough Island, namely poor weather and rapid bait disappearance. Methods We set up bait degradation plots across the primary habitats to monitor the impact of expected heavy rain on bait pellets. In contrast, bait availability monitoring and slug laboratory trials were set up ad hoc in response to unexpected observations of high bait consumption by invasive slugs in the lowlands, where both slugs and mice are more abundant. Key results Bait degradation rates were very different between the highlands and the lowlands, with bait in the highlands lasting about six times longer, despite bait pellets receiving more precipitation and the highlands being persistently under cloud. Bait availability in the lowlands dropped by >80% within a few days of the second and third bait application, down to critically low levels (~2 kg ha−1). Importantly, mouse activity was negligible by this time. Non-native slugs appeared to be the main cause of such a sudden drop in rodent bait availability. Conclusions The expected rainy weather was not a significant direct cause of bait degradation in the short term. In contrast, the unexpected slug interference, overlooked in earlier planning trials, resulted in major adjustments of the baiting strategy. Indeed, the rapid bait disappearance in the lowlands triggered the third bait application over this area, at a higher rate. This was not enough, as mice are still present. Implications This is the first report of slug interference during aerial rodent eradications. Our results illustrate how interference by non-target species could affect future pest eradications using baits and should, as far as possible, be assessed early during planning.

21. Social Learning of Avoidance Behaviors: Trap Aversion in Captive Coyotes

Social learning can help animals gain knowledge rapidly and may enhance survival. In species that are subjected to capture in foothold traps and then lethally removed, such as the coyote (Canis latrans), learning to avoid traps is critical to survival. Here, we tested social learning of trap avoidance behavior in three experimental scenarios with captive coyotes. In the first experiment, coyotes observed an unfamiliar coyote get captured in a foothold trap (i.e., demonstrator) or did not observe a demonstrator and were therefore naïve to traps. The coyotes that observed a demonstrator showed similar latencies to approach the trap and be captured as coyotes without a demonstrator. In the second experiment, coyotes observed their trap-naïve mate get captured in a foothold trap while housed together. These coyotes had longer latencies to approach the trap and be captured than their mates. In the third experiment, demonstrator coyotes were housed separately in an enclosure adjacent to two other enclosures – one housing their mate and one housing an unfamiliar coyote. Here, unfamiliar coyotes had longer latencies to approach the trap and get captured than the mates of the demonstrator coyotes. These results suggest that coyotes have limited ability to socially learn avoidance behavior, with familiarity and proximity of the demonstrator influencing the ability of coyotes to use social learning. Thus, the different results emerging from this study may reflect behaviors related to territoriality and pair-bonds.

Background No effective pharmacological or non-pharmacological interventions exist for patients with long COVID. We aimed to describe recovery 1 year after hospital discharge for COVID-19, identify factors associated with patient-perceived recovery, and identify potential therapeutic targets by describing the underlying inflammatory profiles of the previously described recovery clusters at 5 months after hospital discharge. Methods The Post-hospitalisation COVID-19 study (PHOSP-COVID) is a prospective, longitudinal cohort study recruiting adults (aged ≥18 years) discharged from hospital with COVID-19 across the UK. Recovery was assessed using patient-reported outcome measures, physical performance, and organ function at 5 months and 1 year after hospital discharge, and stratified by both patient-perceived recovery and recovery cluster. Hierarchical logistic regression modelling was performed for patient-perceived recovery at 1 year. Cluster analysis was done using the clustering large applications k-medoids approach using clinical outcomes at 5 months. Inflammatory protein profiling was analysed from plasma at the 5-month visit. This study is registered on the ISRCTN Registry, ISRCTN10980107, and recruitment is ongoing. Findings 2320 participants discharged from hospital between March 7, 2020, and April 18, 2021, were assessed at 5 months after discharge and 807 (32·7%) participants completed both the 5-month and 1-year visits. 279 (35·6%) of these 807 patients were women and 505 (64·4%) were men, with a mean age of 58·7 (SD 12·5) years, and 224 (27·8%) had received invasive mechanical ventilation (WHO class 7–9). The proportion of patients reporting full recovery was unchanged between 5 months (501 [25·5%] of 1965) and 1 year (232 [28·9%] of 804). Factors associated with being less likely to report full recovery at 1 year were female sex (odds ratio 0·68 [95% CI 0·46–0·99]), obesity (0·50 [0·34–0·74]) and invasive mechanical ventilation (0·42 [0·23–0·76]). Cluster analysis (n=1636) corroborated the previously reported four clusters: very severe, severe, moderate with cognitive impairment, and mild, relating to the severity of physical health, mental health, and cognitive impairment at 5 months. We found increased inflammatory mediators of tissue damage and repair in both the very severe and the moderate with cognitive impairment clusters compared with the mild cluster, including IL-6 concentration, which was increased in both comparisons (n=626 participants). We found a substantial deficit in median EQ-5D-5L utility index from before COVID-19 (retrospective assessment; 0·88 [IQR 0·74–1·00]), at 5 months (0·74 [0·64–0·88]) to 1 year (0·75 [0·62–0·88]), with minimal improvements across all outcome measures at 1 year after discharge in the whole cohort and within each of the four clusters. Interpretation The sequelae of a hospital admission with COVID-19 were substantial 1 year after discharge across a range of health domains, with the minority in our cohort feeling fully recovered. Patient-perceived health-related quality of life was reduced at 1 year compared with before hospital admission. Systematic inflammation and obesity are potential treatable traits that warrant further investigation in clinical trials. Longitudinal analysis is a core aspect of many medical applications for understanding the relationship between an anatomical subject’s function and its trajectory of shape change over time. Whereas mixed-effects (or hierarchical) modeling is the statistical method of choice for analysis of longitudinal data, we here propose its extension as hierarchical geodesic polynomial model (HGPM) for multilevel analyses of longitudinal shape data. 3D shapes are transformed to a non-Euclidean shape space for regression analysis using geodesics on a high dimensional Riemannian manifold. At the subject-wise level, each individual trajectory of shape change is represented by a univariate geodesic polynomial model on timestamps. At the population level, multivariate polynomial expansion is applied to uni/multivariate geodesic polynomial models for both anchor points and tangent vectors. As such, the trajectory of an individual subject’s shape changes over time can be modeled accurately with a reduced number of parameters, and population-level effects from multiple covariates on trajectories can be well captured. The implemented HGPM is validated on synthetic examples of points on a unit 3D sphere. Further tests on clinical 4D right ventricular data show that HGPM is capable of capturing observable effects on shapes attributed to changes in covariates, which are consistent with qualitative clinical evaluations. HGPM demonstrates its effectiveness in modeling shape changes at both subject-wise and population levels, which is promising for future studies of the relationship between shape changes over time and the level of dysfunction severity on anatomical objects associated with disease.

25. Assessing volcanism during the PETM based on mercury isotope and abundance data

- Abstract
The Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM, ∼56 Ma) was an abrupt hyperthermal event that has been linked to carbon release from volcanism associated with the North Atlantic Igneous Province (NAIP). Anomalously high sedimentary mercury (Hg) concentrations, a proxy for volcanism, have been recorded across the PETM from some locations, supporting this link. Nevertheless, Hg concentration data alone offer little insight into emplacement mechanisms and carbon source(s), and can be influenced by depositional conditions and post-depositional alteration. To help address this issue, and more critically evaluate the efficacy of Hg as a volcanism proxy, Hg-isotope data have been obtained across a thick, deep-marine sedimentary record of the PETM from the North Sea that was deposited in close proximity to active NAIP volcanism. These data are combined with a new global compilation of Hg concertation data across the PETM, which includes new Hg concentration data obtained from five globally distributed sites. Analysis of all the data demonstrates extensive and at least intercontinental Hg enrichments during the onset of the PETM carbon-isotope excursion, and that this was related to a major transient pulse of extrusive volcanism. Hg-isotope data support protracted volcanism through the PETM, but the evidence for sustained Hg enrichment from volcanism through the entirety of the PETM is equivocal. Towards the end of, and after, the PETM, the data suggest an overall waning influence of volcanogenic Hg.

26. Researching the use of virtual Field trips as a flexible multipurpose teaching resource

- Abstract
Virtual field trips (VFTs) are a means to give learners a genuine experience and feeling of what itwould be like to participate in in-person fieldtrips but can also act as a teaching resource to meet otherlearning outcomes that are not necessarily related to fieldwork. These virtual experiences can providegreater accessibility for people that cannot participate in in-person field trips for reasons such aslogistics, cost, or physical ability. Using internet browsers, we have been able to create online contentthat is interactive with mapping activities, communication exercises, animations, 360° videos, virtualrocks, detailed thin sections of rocks, and questions with automated feedback. These VFTs have beenused as more than just a replica of an in-person field trip, they can be used in a variety of contexts. Asan example, our research group has used them as: 1) flexible knowledge resources to replace lecturesand supplement hands-on laboratory classes and tutorials; 2) fieldwork preparation resources thatteach content and allow students to explore outcrops they will visit in person; and 3) a self-guidedfield trip when group field trips are impractical or impossible (e.g., student illness).We have found that VFTs allow educators to take students to places they would otherwise not be ableto go, to familiarize students with field skills and content before going into the field to maximizelearning on in-person field trips. Our research results from student interviews, focus groups and pre-post measures of learning show that students enjoy and engage well with the digital content, althoughwe are still far from an immersive in-person field experience. Looking to the future, we are continuingto develop new ways for students to genuinely explore and discover on a VFT, making use of mixedreality, which has the potential to provide students with an even more immersive experience. Suchinteractive VFTs can be suitable replacements for lecture content in a flipped classroom or aspreparatory exercises for in-person fieldtrips, but they should only replace in-person fieldtrips aftercareful consideration.

27. Terrestrial Early Eocene Volcanic Paleoenvironment of the Skoll High, Mid-Norwegian Margin, Based on New High-Resolution 3D Seismic Geomorphology

Extensive magmatism during the NE Atlantic break-up generated about 6-10 million cubic kilometers of magma in the Paleogene. Magmatic degassing and explosive discharge of thermogenic gases by contact metamorphism is implicated in triggering the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM; 56 Ma). In 2022, the CAGE22-5 research cruise collected high-resolution seismic, sub-bottom profiler, and multibeam data across the central and northern Vøring Plateau to tie IODP Expedition 396 Sites U1571 to U1574. One high-resolution P-Cable 3D seismic cube (10.3 by 1.8 km) was collected on the Skoll High, covering both sites U1571 and U1572. The data were fast-track processed with a bin size of 6.1 x 6.1 m. Four Cenozoic sedimentary horizons and the Top Basalt horizon were subsequently interpreted, followed by horizon attribute analyses. The Top Basalt horizon reveals unprecedented details of the nature of the volcanic paleosurface. A faulted and eroded lava horizon characterizes the southeastern part of the cube at 150-250 m below sea floor (bsf) around the U1571 site location. In contrast, in the northwestern part of the cube, the Top Basalt attribute maps reveal a pitted surface and lobate structures with linear ridges with characteristic inter-ridge spacings of a few tens of meters. The pitted basalt surface is mapped in an area of about 5.5 km2 at depths of 250-350 m bsf and drilled by Site U1572. About 270 individual pits have been mapped with radius ranging from about six meters, within the horizontal resolution of the data, to about 50 meters with a mean radius of c. 16 meters. The holes are interpreted as rootless cones, which comprise volcanic craters resulting from the explosive reaction between lava flows which flow over water-saturated sediments. The dimensions of the rootless cones in the Skoll 3D survey are comparable with the field analogue of rootless cones mapped in the Myvatn lake area of NE Iceland. Unlike at Myvatn and at other field analogues, the Skoll3D data allow unique 3D imaging of the rootless cones revealing internal structures and geometries including the base of the cone structures. The cone depths vary from meters to a few tens of meters. The lobate structures are interpreted as separate subaerial lava flows with compressional ridges. These lava flows are similar to outcrop analogue lava flows and compressional ridges imaged by elevation model ISN2016 with a 2x2 m resolution near the Myvatn lake. In conclusion, the interpreted patterns of the basaltic pitted surface within the Skoll3D suggest a wet terrestrial paleoenvironment during effusive volcanism. Unlike in the eastern faulted area of the survey, the extremely well imaged pitted basalt surface of the Skoll3D area did not experience significant erosion, suggesting rapid subsidence and drowning of the paleo-land surface in a low-energy coastal environment. This study demonstrates the unprecedented detail that is possible when high resolution 3D seismic data acquisition is applied to buried volcanic landscapes and opens the potential for unique associated insights in the Northeast Atlantic and further afield.

PHOSP-COVID is a national UK multi-centre cohort study of patients who were hospitalised for COVID-19 and subsequently discharged.PHOSP-COVID was established to investigate the medium- and long-term sequelae of severe COVID-19 requiring hospitalisation, understand the underlying mechanisms of these sequelae, evaluate the medium- and long-term effects of COVID-19 treatments, and to serve as a platform to enable future studies, including clinical trials.Data collected covered a wide range of physical measures, biological samples, and Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs).Participants could join the cohort either in Tier 1 only with remote data collection using hospital records, a PROMs app and postal saliva sample for DNA, or in Tier 2 where they were invited to attend two specific research visits for further data collection and biological research sampling. These research visits occurred at five (range 2-7) months and 12 (range 10-14) months post-discharge. Participants could also participate in specific nested studies (Tier 3) at selected sites.All participants were asked to consent to further follow-up for 25 years via linkage to their electronic healthcare records and to be re-contacted for further research.In total, 7935 participants were recruited from 83 UK sites: 5238 to Tier 1 and 2697 to Tier 2, between August 2020 and March 2022.Cohort data are held in a Trusted Research Environment and samples stored in a central biobank. Data and samples can be accessed upon request and subject to approvals.

The Jurassic to Cretaceous strata exposed in the Rollrock Section, Sverdrup Basin, Arctic Canada, represent one of the northernmost continuous outcrops spanning this poorly understood transition. The Oxfordian–Valanginian mudstones of the Rollrock Section were deposited in a shallow marine environment and, as such, provide the ideal lithology to investigate the response of high latitude dinoflagellate cyst populations to the frequent environmental perturbations of this time. Using a multivariate statistical approach, distinct palaeoecologically significant groups are identified and directly linked to time and palaeoenvironments, allowing for the reconstruction of underlying long term palaeoenvironmental trends. These palaeoenvironmental trends are identified to be driven by sequence stratigraphic cycles. For the first time, fourth order sequences are recorded from this pivotal period in the Sverdrup Basin and reveal an additional level of short term climatic events that complicate the identification of long term trends. The relationship existing between marine phytoplankton and climate is utilised to decipher the interplay of long-term and short-term climate fluctuations, distinguishing them from evolutionary trends. Two groups of dinoflagellate cysts, identified by process morphology, are recorded to act as environmental proxies. High percentages of proximochorate dinoflagellate cysts, such as Trichodinium erinaceoides, indicate more proximal, high energy, nutrient rich conditions and are dominant in fourth order transgressive systems tracts. High percentages of chorate dinoflagellate cysts, such as Oligosphaeridium complex, signify distal, low energy, nutrient depleted conditions and are dominant in fourth order highstand systems tracts.

Abstract. Experiences of bullying in the workplace can increase anxiety, paranoia, and hypervigilance to threat in victims. Such factors are also associated with conspiracy beliefs. Two preregistered studies (cross-sectional and experimental) tested whether bullying experiences may be linked to the development of conspiracy beliefs. Study 1 ( n = 273) demonstrated that experiences of workplace bullying were positively associated with conspiracy beliefs, an effect that could be explained by paranoia. In Study 2 ( n = 206), participants who imagined being bullied (vs. supported) reported increased belief in conspiracy theories. Our research uncovers another antecedent of conspiracy beliefs: workplace bullying. Future research should endeavor to explore how best to support victims and avert the link between being bullied and conspiracy theorizing emerging.

39. Basic income: a 50-state economic impact analysis

Purpose This paper aims to estimate the economic impact of a basic income for each state in the USA. Design/methodology/approach Building on existing pilot studies of basic income in the USA, this paper presumes a $500 per month basic income for individuals earning less than $25,000 in annual income. Using impact analysis for planning (IMPLAN) input–output modeling software, estimated increase in gross state product and employment are provided on a state-by-state basis. Findings A $6,000 annual basic income ($500 per month) to adult persons earning less than $25,000 annually results in an increase in gross state product (e.g. gross “regional” product in IMPLAN terminology) ranging from 0.7% (District of Columbia) to 5.7% (Florida). Likewise, this increase in household spending will create demand for employment across these states, resulting in an increase in employment from 0.9% (District of Columbia) to 5.8% (Florida). Originality/value To date, to the best of the author’s knowledge, this is the first state-by-state analysis of the economic impact of a basic income provision to lower-income individuals.

Clostridioides difficile remains a key cause of healthcare-associated infection, with multidrug-resistant (MDR) lineages causing high-mortality (≥20%) outbreaks. Cephalosporin treatment is a long-established risk factor, and antimicrobial stewardship is a key control. A mechanism underlying raised cephalosporin MICs has not been identified in C. difficile, but among other species, this is often acquired via amino acid substitutions in cell wall transpeptidases (penicillin binding proteins [PBPs]). Here, we investigated five C. difficile transpeptidases (PBP1 to PBP5) for recent substitutions, associated cephalosporin MICs, and co-occurrence with fluoroquinolone resistance. Previously published genome assemblies (n = 7,096) were obtained, representing 16 geographically widespread lineages, including healthcare-associated ST1(027). Recent amino acid substitutions were found within PBP1 (n = 50) and PBP3 (n = 48), ranging from 1 to 10 substitutions per genome. β-Lactam MICs were measured for closely related pairs of wild-type and PBP-substituted isolates separated by 20 to 273 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). Recombination-corrected phylogenies were constructed to date substitution acquisition. Key substitutions such as PBP3 V497L and PBP1 T674I/N/V emerged independently across multiple lineages. They were associated with extremely high cephalosporin MICs; 1 to 4 doubling dilutions >wild-type, up to 1,506 μg/mL. Substitution patterns varied by lineage and clade, showed geographic structure, and occurred post-1990, coincident with the gyrA and/or gyrB substitutions conferring fluoroquinolone resistance. In conclusion, recent PBP1 and PBP3 substitutions are associated with raised cephalosporin MICs in C. difficile. Their co-occurrence with fluoroquinolone resistance hinders attempts to understand the relative importance of these drugs in the dissemination of epidemic lineages. Further controlled studies of cephalosporin and fluoroquinolone stewardship are needed to determine their relative effectiveness in outbreak control. IMPORTANCE Fluoroquinolone and cephalosporin use in healthcare settings has triggered outbreaks of high-mortality, multidrug-resistant C. difficile infection. Here, we identify a mechanism associated with raised cephalosporin MICs in C. difficile comprising amino acid substitutions in two cell wall transpeptidase enzymes (penicillin binding proteins). The higher the number of substitutions, the greater the impact on phenotype. Dated phylogenies revealed that substitutions associated with raised cephalosporin and fluoroquinolone MICs were co-acquired immediately before clinically important outbreak strains emerged. PBP substitutions were geographically structured within genetic lineages, suggesting adaptation to local antimicrobial prescribing. Antimicrobial stewardship of cephalosporins and fluoroquinolones is an effective means of C. difficile outbreak control. Genetic changes associated with raised MIC may impart a “fitness cost” after antibiotic withdrawal. Our study therefore identifies a mechanism that may explain the contribution of cephalosporin stewardship to resolving outbreak conditions. However, due to the co-occurrence of raised cephalosporin MICs and fluoroquinolone resistance, further work is needed to determine the relative importance of each.

Structure probing combined with next-generation sequencing (NGS) has provided novel insights into RNA structure-function relationships. To date such studies have focused largely on bacteria and eukaryotes, with little attention given to the third domain of life, archaea. Furthermore, functional RNAs have not been extensively studied in archaea, leaving open questions about RNA structure and function within this domain of life. With archaeal species being diverse and having many similarities to both bacteria and eukaryotes, the archaea domain has the potential to be an evolutionary bridge. In this study, we introduce a method for probing RNA structurein vivoin the archaea domain of life. We investigated the structure of ribosomal RNA (rRNA) fromMethanosarcina acetivorans, a well-studied anaerobic archaeal species, grown with either methanol or acetate. After probing the RNAin vivowith dimethyl sulfate (DMS), Structure-seq2 libraries were generated, sequenced, and analyzed. We mapped the reactivity of DMS onto the secondary structure of the ribosome, which we determined independently with comparative analysis, and confirmed the accuracy of DMS probing inM. acetivorans. Accessibility of the rRNA to DMS in the two carbon sources was found to be quite similar, although some differences were found. Overall, this study establishes the Structure-seq2 pipeline in the archaea domain of life and informs about ribosomal structure withinM. acetivorans.

Background Around 10% of school-aged children experience mental health difficulties. Many more are ‘vulnerable’: experiencing emotional and/or behavioural problems reaching clinical levels, and thus at greatest risk of future mental illness. The trial aim is to evaluate the effectiveness of the CUES for schools programme in reducing emotional and behavioural problems in vulnerable children. Methods The “CUES for Schools” study is a multicentre cluster randomised controlled trial in primary schools in south east England. Schools will be randomised to receive the usual school curriculum, or the CUES programme (1:1). We aim to enrol 74 schools (5550 children including 2220 vulnerable children). CUES is a whole-class teacher-facilitated interactive digital cognitive-behavioural intervention, delivered as 24 short (20-min) modules over 12 weeks, targeting emotional/behavioural regulation skills. Children self-report emotional/behavioural problems at baseline, 8, and 16 weeks, and wellbeing and cognitive vulnerability at 0 and 16 weeks. Adverse events are assessed at 8 and 16 weeks. Teachers rate classroom behaviour at baseline and 16 weeks. School senior leadership teams and individual teachers consent to involvement in the study; parents can opt their child out of CUES sessions, assessments, or research. Children can similarly opt out and assent to research participation. The primary objective of this trial is to evaluate the effectiveness of CUES for schools compared to the usual school curriculum in improving emotional/behavioural problems for vulnerable Year 4 (8–9 years old) children at 16 weeks post-randomisation, as measured using a standardised questionnaire designed for primary schools. The secondary objective is to investigate the impact of the CUES for schools programme on both vulnerable and non-vulnerable children on wellbeing and teacher-rated classroom behaviour. Discussion The study will show whether CUES for schools is more effective than the usual curriculum in reducing emotional and behavioural problems in vulnerable Year 4 children, and thus reducing the risk of mental health difficulties in later adolescent and adult life. As a digital, teacher-facilitated intervention, CUES for schools can be readily implemented, at minimal cost. If effective, CUES for schools therefore has the potential to reduce the impact of emotional/behavioural difficulties on children’s learning, behaviour, and relationships and the burden of future mental health morbidity. Streptococcus mitisis a common oral commensal and an opportunistic pathogen that causes bacteremia and infective endocarditis; however, the species has received little attention compared to other pathogenic streptococcal species. Effective and easy-to-use molecular typing tools are essential for understanding bacterial population diversity and biology, but schemes specific forS. mitisare not currently available. We therefore developed a multilocus sequence typing (MLST) scheme and defined sequence clusters or lineages ofS. mitisusing a comprehensive global data set of 322 genomes (148 publicly available and 174 newly sequenced). We used internal 450-bp sequence fragments of seven housekeeping genes (accA,gki,hom,oppC,patB,rlmN, andtsf) to define the MLST scheme and derived the globalS. mitissequence clusters using the PopPUNK clustering algorithm. We identified an initial set of 259 sequence types (STs) and 258 global sequence clusters. The schemes showed high concordance (100%), capturing extensiveS. mitisdiversity with strains assigned to multiple unique STs and global sequence clusters. The tools also identified extensive within- and between-hostS. mitisgenetic diversity among isolates sampled from a cohort of healthy individuals, together with potential transmission events, supported by both phylogeny and pairwise single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) distances. Our novel molecular typing and strain clustering schemes forS. mitisallow for the integration of new strain data, are electronically portable at the PubMLST database (https://pubmlst.org/smitis), and offer a standardized approach to understanding the population structure ofS. mitis. These robust tools will enable new insights into the epidemiology ofS. mitiscolonization, disease and transmission.

A description is given of recent progress in the understanding of mechanisms in fluid-body interactions where the motion of a body and the motion of the surrounding fluid affect each other substantially. The mathematical modelling of such unsteady interactions is for internal channel and external near-wall flows in two spatial dimensions and time. The emphasis throughout is on analytical developments with accompanying reduced computation. The successive aspects studied here are interactions and impacts in inviscid flows, skimming and sinking, the lift-off, fly-away or bouncing of a body, and viscous effects including especially the interplay between viscous and inviscid contributions. The main findings are concerned with physical and mechanical insights into impact times, lift-off criteria, the borders between impact and fly-away, the principal parameters and their ranges and the influences from body shape and mass.
