Winter data of surface ocean temperature (SST), salinity (SSS) and CO2 fugacity (fCO(2)) collected on the VOS M/V Nuka Arctica in the subpolar North Atlantic between 2004 and 2017 are used to establish trends, drivers, and interannual variability. Over the period, waters cooled and freshened, and the fCO(2) increased at a rate similar to the atmospheric CO2 growth rate. When accounting for the freshening, the inferred increase in dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) was found to be approximately twice that expected from atmospheric CO2 alone. This is attributed to the cooling. In the Irminger Sea, fCO(2) exhibited additional interannual variations driven by atmospheric forcing through winter mixing. As winter fCO(2) in the region is close to the atmospheric, the subpolar North Atlantic has varied between being slightly supersaturated and slightly undersaturated over the investigated period.

We present the first year-long subpolar trans-Atlantic set of surface seawater CO2 fugacity (fCO2sw) data. The data were obtained aboard the MV Nuka Arctica in 2005 and provide a quasi-continuous picture of the fCO2sw variability between Denmark and Greenland. Complementary real-time high-resolution data of surface chlorophyll-a (chl-a) concentrations and mixed layer depth (MLD) estimates have been collocated with the fCO2sw data. Off-shelf fCO2sw data exhibit a pronounced seasonal cycle. In winter, surface waters are saturated to slightly supersaturated over a wide range of temperatures. Through spring and summer, fCO2sw decreases by approximately 60 μatm, due to biological carbon consumption, which is not fully counteracted by the fCO2sw increase due to summer warming. The changes are synchronous with changes in chl-a concentrations and MLD, both of which are exponentially correlated with fCO2sw in off-shelf regions.

Data from two Voluntary Observing Ship (VOS) (2005–2007) augmented with data subsets from ten cruises (1987–2005) were used to investigate the spatiotemporal variations of the CO2 fugacity in seawater (fCO2sw) in the North Sea at seasonal and inter-annual time scales. The observed seasonal fCO2sw variations were related to variations in sea surface temperature (SST), biology plus mixing, and air-sea CO2 exchange. Over the study period, the seasonal amplitude in fCO2sw induced by SST changes was 0.4–0.75 times those resulting from variations in biology plus mixing. Along a meridional transect, fCO2sw normally decreased northwards (−12 μatm per degree latitude), but the gradient disappeared/reversed during spring as a consequence of an enhanced seasonal amplitude of fCO2sw in southern parts of the North Sea. Along a zonal transect, a weak gradient (−0.8 μatm per degree longitude) was observed in the annual mean fCO2sw. Annually and averaged over the study area, surface waters of the North Sea were CO2 undersaturated and, thus, a sink of atmospheric CO2. However, during summer, surface waters in the region 55.5–54.5° N were CO2 supersaturated and, hence, a source for atmospheric CO2. Comparison of fCO2sw data acquired within two 1°×1° regions in the northern and southern North Sea during different years (1987, 2001, 2002, and 2005–2007) revealed large interannual variations, especially during spring and summer when year-to-year fCO2sw differences (≈160–200 μatm) approached seasonal changes (≈200–250 μatm). The springtime variations resulted from changes in magnitude and timing of the phytoplankton bloom, whereas changes in SST, wind speed and total alkalinity may have contributed to the summertime interannual fCO2sw differences. The lowest interannual variation (10–50 μatm) was observed during fall and early winter. Comparison with data reported in October 1967 suggests that the fCO2sw growth rate in the central North Sea was similar to that in the atmosphere.

Accurate assessment of anthropogenic carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and their redistribution among the atmosphere, ocean, and terrestrial biosphere - the "global carbon budget" - is important to better understand the global carbon cycle, support the development of climate policies, and project future climate change. Here we describe data sets and methodology to quantify the five major components of the global carbon budget and their uncertainties. Fossil CO2 emissions (E-FF) are based on energy statistics and cement production data, while emissions from land use and land-use change (E-LUC), mainly deforestation, are based on land use and land -use change data and bookkeeping models. Atmospheric CO2 concentration is measured directly and its growth rate (G(ATM)) is computed from the annual changes in concentration. The ocean CO2 sink (S-OCEAN) and terrestrial CO2 sink (S-LAND) are estimated with global process models constrained by observations. The resulting carbon budget imbalance (B-IM), the difference between the estimated total emissions and the estimated changes in the atmosphere, ocean, and terrestrial biosphere, is a measure of imperfect data and understanding of the contemporary carbon cycle. All uncertainties are reported as +/- 1 sigma. For the last decade available (2008-2017), E-FF was 9.4 +/- 0.5 GtC yr(-1), E-LUC 1.5 +/- 0.7 GtC yr(-1), G(ATM) 4.7 +/- 0.02 GtC yr(-1), S-OCEAN 2.4 +/- 0.5 GtC yr(-1), and S-LAND 3.2 +/- 0.8 GtC yr(-1), with a budget imbalance B-IM of 0.5 GtC yr(-1) indicating overestimated emissions and/or underestimated sinks. For the year 2017 alone, the growth in E-FF was about 1.6 % and emissions increased to 9.9 +/- 0.5 GtC yr(-1). Also for 2017, E-LUC was 1.4 +/- 0.7 GtC yr(-1), G(ATM) was 4.6 +/- 0.2 GtC yr(-1), S-OCEAN was 2.5 +/- 0.5 GtC yr(-1), and S-LAND was 3.8 +/- 0.8 GtC yr(-1), with a B-IM of 0.3 GtC. The global atmospheric CO2 concentration reached 405.0 +/- 0.1 ppm averaged over 2017. For 2018, preliminary data for the first 6-9 months indicate a renewed growth in E-FF of +2.7 % (range of 1.8 % to 3.7 %) based on national emission projections for China, the US, the EU, and India and projections of gross domestic product corrected for recent changes in the carbon intensity of the economy for the rest of the world. The analysis presented here shows that the mean and trend in the five components of the global carbon budget are consistently estimated over the period of 1959-2017, but discrepancies of up to 1 GtC yr(-1) persist for the representation of semi-decadal variability in CO2 fluxes. A detailed comparison among individual estimates and the introduction of a broad range of observations show (1) no consensus in the mean and trend in land -use change emissions, (2) a persistent low agreement among the different methods on the magnitude of the land CO2 flux in the northern extra-tropics, and (3) an apparent underestimation of the CO2 variability by ocean models, originating outside the tropics. This living data update documents changes in the methods and data sets used in this new global carbon budget and the progress in understanding the global carbon cycle compared with previous publications of this data set (Le Quere et al., 2018, 2016, 2015a, b, 2014, 2013). This paper takes a macro perspective on quality and safety in elderly care, focusing on the role of the macro level context in two European countries; Norway and the Netherlands. The aim is to conduct a comparison of the healthcare systems as a foundation to understand quality and patient safety improvement efforts in elderly care across the two countries. Our methodological approach is to conduct a review of macro level factors as suggested by previous studies such as governance and financing structure, role of different actors, and types of initiatives taken. Data was collected from open sources such as national statistics, governmental reports, and web pages of key actors at the macro level. The similarities and differences are discussed to highlight the main areas where improvement efforts need to take country-specific factors into account when learning across countries.

Motivation: The BioTIME database contains raw data on species identities and abundances in ecological assemblages through time. These data enable users to calculate temporal trends in biodiversity within and amongst assemblages using a broad range of metrics. BioTIME is being developed as a community-led open-source database of biodiversity time series. Our goal is to accelerate and facilitate quantitative analysis of temporal patterns of biodiversity in the Anthropocene. Main types of variables included: The database contains 8,777,413 species abundance records, from assemblages consistently sampled for a minimum of 2 years, which need not necessarily be consecutive. In addition, the database contains metadata relating to sampling methodology and contextual information about each record. Spatial location and grain: BioTIME is a global database of 547,161 unique sampling locations spanning the marine, freshwater and terrestrial realms. Grain size varies across datasets from 0.0000000158 km(2) (158 cm(2)) to 100 km(2) (1,000,000,000,000 cm(2)). Time period and grainBio: TIME records span from 1874 to 2016. The minimal temporal grain across all datasets in BioTIME is a year. Major taxa and level of measurement: BioTIME includes data from 44,440 species across the plant and animal kingdoms, ranging from plants, plankton and terrestrial invertebrates to small and large vertebrates.

The globalatmospheric CO2 concentration is measured directly and itsrate of growth (GATM) is computed from the annual changes inconcentration. The mean ocean CO2 sink (SOCEAN) isbased on observations from the 1990s, while the annual anomalies andtrends are estimated with ocean models. The variability inSOCEAN is evaluated with data products based on surveys ofocean CO2 measurements. The global residual terrestrialCO2 sink (SLAND) is estimated by the difference ofthe other terms of the global carbon budget and compared to results ofindependent Dynamic Global Vegetation Models forced by observed climate,CO2 and land cover change (some including nitrogen-carboninteractions). We compare the variability and mean land and ocean fluxesto estimates from three atmospheric inverse methods for three broadlatitude bands. GATM was high in 2013 reflecting a steadyincrease in EFF and smaller and opposite changes betweenSOCEAN and SLAND compared to the past decade(2004-2013). The global atmospheric CO2 concentration reached395.31 ± 0.10 ppm averaged over 2013. We estimate thatEFF will increase by 2.5% (1.3-3.5%) to 10.1 ± 0.6 GtCin 2014 (37.0 ± 2.2 GtCO2 yr-1), 65% aboveemissions in 1990, based on projections of World Gross Domestic Productand recent changes in the carbon intensity of the economy. From thisprojection of EFF and assumed constant ELUC for2014, cumulative emissions of CO2 will reach about 545± 55 GtC (2000 ± 200 GtCO2) for 1870-2014,about 75% from EFF and 25% from ELUC. Denne rapporten gjelder undersøkelser av havforsuring som er utført av IMR, NIVA og BCCR på oppdrag fra Klif i 2012. Den er basert på målinger på strekningen Oslo-Kiel og Tromsø-Longyearbyen utført av NIVA, vannsøylemålinger langs faste snitt i Nordsjøen (Torungen – Hirtshals), Norskehavet (Svinøy-NW), og to snitt i Barentshavet (Vardø-N og Fugløya-Bjørnøya) utført av Havforskningsinstituttet, og kontinuerlige overflatemålinger av pCO2 i Norskehavet utført av BCCR i 2012. Resultatene fra Barentshavet viser en klar sesongvariasjon i de øvre 100 m av vannsøylen, som for det meste er styrt av primærproduksjon og ferskvannstilførsel gjennom året. I nordøstlige Barentshavet (Vardø-N) lå metningsgrad for aragonitt (Ar) mellom 1,1 og 2,2 med minimumsverdier i polarvannet ved sørspissen av Svalbard. I tillegg påvirkes karboninnholdet her av polarvannet, spesielt tydelig i den nordlige delen av Barentshavet. Mellom Fugløya og Bjørnøya vistes tydelig sesongvariasjon på grunn av ferskvannstilførsel og primærproduksjon. I Norskehavet var det stor variasjon fra kyst til åpent hav og karboninnholdet påvirkes av kystvannet som brer seg vestover i løpet av sommeren. Konklusjonen er at overflatevann i områdene som er studert i denne rapporten er mettet i forhold til både kalsitt og aragonitt. Laveste metningsgrad ble funnet i polarvannet i nordøstlige Barentshavet. Det er i tillegg viktig å merke seg at metningshorisonten i dyphavet stiger, og per i dag er undermetning av aragonitt påvist på 2400 meters dyp i Norskehavet. Hastigheten av havforsuringen bestemmer når undermetning utvikles både i dyphav og overflaten. Hastigheten for utviklingen vil kunne estimeres nøyaktig først når målinger fra flere år foreligger. It has recently been suggested that there is a positive synergistic relationship between herbivorous zooplankton and their algal food, with herbivores stimulating the production of their preferred species while negatively affecting competing algal species. A prerequisite forthis positive interaction hypothesis is that herbivores and phytoplankton coexist in balance in which recycled nutrients from herbivores are immediately utilised by phytoplankton, which, in turn, are grazed by the herbivores. Empirical evidence suggests that this balance is more stable during increasing primary productivity than during its decline. During longer periods of highly stratified water in summer and early autumn, primaryproductivity may decrease because the export of nutrients from the euphotic zone outweighs import. If there is a lag between the decline in primary production and the decline in herbivore biomass, the herbivores may overgraze their preferred algal species, which, in turn, cannot fully utilise the recycled nutrients. Hence, nutrients may become available for non-grazed phytoplankton species that cause red tides and harmful algalblooms (HABs). In other words, it is hypothesised that HABs and red tides are caused by the collapse of the balanced positive (synergistic) relationship between herbivores and their preferred algal food.

Here we present monthly, basin-wide maps of the partial pressure of carbon dioxide (pCO2) for the North Atlantic on a 1° latitude by 1° longitude grid for years 2004 through 2006 inclusive. The maps have been computed using a neural network technique which reconstructs the non-linear relationships between three biogeochemical parameters and marine pCO2. A self organizing map (SOM) neural network has been trained using 389 000 triplets of the SeaWiFS-MODIS chlorophyll-a concentration, the NCEP/NCAR reanalysis sea surface temperature, and the FOAM mixed layer depth. The trained SOM was labelled with 137 000 underway pCO2 measurements collected in situ during 2004, 2005 and 2006 in the North Atlantic, spanning the range of 208 to 437 μatm. The root mean square error (RMSE) of the neural network fit to the data is 11.6 μatm, which equals to just above 3 per cent of an average pCO2 value in the in situ dataset. The seasonal pCO2 cycle as well as estimates of the interannual variability in the major biogeochemical provinces are presented and discussed. High resolution combined with basin-wide coverage makes the maps a useful tool for several applications such as the monitoring of basin-wide air-sea CO2 fluxes or improvement of seasonal and interannual marine CO2 cycles in future model predictions. The method itself is a valuable alternative to traditional statistical modelling techniques used in geosciences.

In particular, MLD appears to be able to predict open ocean subpolar fCO2sw to within 12 ?atm using a single equation for the whole year. The predictive capability of chl a is around 20% less, with root mean square values of 14.5 ?atm. As fCO2sw extrapolation parameters, both MLD and chl a outperform sea surface temperatures in the open subpolar North Atlantic. However, the situation on the shelves is much more heterogeneous and the fCO2sw?parameter relationships are not as strong as they are off the shelves.

The manganacarborane dianion in [N(PPh(3))(2)][NEt(4)][1,1,1-(CO)(3)-2-Ph-closo-1,2-MnCB(9)H(9)] (1b) reacts with cationic transition metal-ligand fragments to give products in which the electrophilic metal groups (M') are exo-polyhedrally attached to the {closo-1,2-MnCB(9)} cage system via three-center two-electron B-H --> M' linkages and generally also by Mn-M' bonds. With {Cu(PPh(3))}(+), the Cu-Mn-Cu trimetallic species [1,6-{Cu(PPh(3))}-1,7-{Cu(PPh(3))}-6,7-(mu-H)(2)-1,1,1-(CO)(3)-2-Ph-closo-1,2-MnCB(9)H(7)] (3a) is formed, whereas reactions with {M'(dppe)}(2+) (M' = Ni, Pd; dppe = Ph(2)PCH(2)CH(2)PPh(2)) give [1,3-{Ni(dppe)}-3-(mu-H)-1,1,1-(CO)(3)-2-Ph-closo-1,2-MnCB(9)H(8)] (5a) and [1,3,6-{Pd(dppe)}-3,6-(mu-H)(2)-1,1,1-(CO)(3)-2-Ph-closo-1,2-MnCB(9)H(7)] (5b), both of which contain M'-Mn bonds. The latter reaction with M' = Pt affords [3,6-{Pt(dppe)}-3,6-(mu-H)(2)-1,1,1-(CO)(3)-2-Ph-closo-1,2-MnCB(9)H(7)] (6), which lacks a Pt-Mn connectivity. Compound 6 itself spontaneously converts to [1-Ph-2,2,2-(CO)(3)-8,8-(dppe)-hypercloso-8,2,1-PtMnCB(9)H(9)] (7b) and thence to [3,6,7-{Mn(CO)(3)}-3,7-(mu-H)(2)-1-Ph-6,6-(dppe)-closo-6,1-PtCB(8)H(6)] (8). This sequence occurs via initial insertion of the {Pt(dppe)} unit and then extrusion of {Mn(CO)(3)} and one {BH} vertex. In the presence of alcohols ROH, compound 6 is transformed to the 7-OR substituted analogues of 7b. X-ray diffraction studies were essential in elucidating the structures encountered in compounds 5-8 and hence in understanding their behavior.

I 1995 ble Groosefjorden undersøkt for å dokumentere tilstanden før igangsetting av nytt biologisk renseanlegg. Det ble også gjort undersøkelser i andre kystområder i Grimstad kommune for å vurdere tilstanden. Undersøkelsene omfattet vannkjemiske målinger (oksygen, næringssalter, temperatur og saltholdighet), bløtbunnprøver, hardbunnundersøkelser (strandsone og dykk) samt undersøkelse av fiskeforekomster. Undersøkelsene viste at bunnområdene i Groosefjorden var tydelig påvirket av det kommunale utslippet på Groos. Bunnvannet hadde lave oksygenkonsentrasjoner og nær utslippet var bløtbunnsfaunaen dominert av arter som opptrer ved tung organisk belastning, men det var ingen større endringer i tilstanden siden forrige undersøkelse på 1980-tallet. Ved dykking ble det i tillegg registrert hydrogensulfid i sedimentene ved utslippspunktet. I overflatelaget ble det kun funnet svake effekter av utslippet. I Homborsund var det ingen større effekter av utslippet, men resultatene tyder på at området er sårbart for økning i tilførslene. Grimstad kommune

Skogsfjorden, Bongstøvann og Rona ble undersøkt sommeren og høsten 1995 for å vurdere effektene av gjennomførte fjordbedringstiltak. Siden 1987/88 har bobleanlegg vært i drift både i Skogsfjorden og Bongstøvann for å bedre oksygenforholdene. Undersøkelsen omfatter hydrokjemiske/hydrografiske analyser, kvalitativ og kvantitativ undersøkelse av bløtbunnsfauna, kvalitativ og semi-kvantitativ undersøkelse av strandsonesamfunn (planter og dyr på grunt vann), planteplanktontellinger og undersøkelse av fiskeforekomster. Undersøkelsen viste at dypvannet i Skogsfjorden og Bongstøvann har endret seg fra å være anoksisk til stort sett å ha gode oksygenforhold som følge av bobleanleggene. Perioder med anoksisk bunnvann har imidlertid opprettholdt hydrogensulfidholdige bunnsedimenter og begrenset etableringen av en permanent bløtbunnsfauna. Det har ikke vært større endringer i fastsittende alger og dyr i strandsonen siden 1987. Fjordene hadde forhøyet innhold av næringssalter, og hadde en noe særpreget fiskefauna og forekomst av planteplankton. Fylkesmannen i Vest-Agder, Miljøvernavdelingen Mandal kommune

Målsettingen har vært å sammefatte relevant kunnskap til en beskrivelse av de økologiske samfunn på hard- og bløtbunn langs kyststrekningen Fulehuk (Oslofjorden) - Stad (Vestlandet), med hovedvekt på forhold som kan gi grunnlag for å vurdere eutrofitilstand og utvikling. Det er store forskjeller i de naturlige miljøforholdene for planter og dyr på kyststrekningen. Likeledes er det nødvendig å ha oversikt over naturlige svigninger for å unngå feiltolkninger. For Vestlandet har sammenlikninger med 100 år gamle data gitt en sterk indikasjon på at fjæresamfunnene i de ytre kystområder ikke er eutrofibelastet. På Skagerrakkysten reduserer mangelen på kvantitative data muligheten for å gi en tilsvarende vurdering, men en svakere eutrofieringbelastning kan ikke utelukkes. Med bakgrunn i de naturgitte forhold vil Skagerrakområdet være mer sårbart for påvirkning enn områder lenger vest. Bløtbunnsamfunnene fra Jomfruland til Stad hadde generelt høy diversitet. Ytre dype stasjoner utenfor Portør, Lyngør, Tromøy, Jøssingfjorden og Håsteinfjorden, representerer muligens spesielle deposisjonsområder. Forekomstene av torsk-, lyr- og hvitting-yngel i Skagerrak har vist kraftige svingninger i bestandene siden 20-årene. På 30-tallet ble bestandene av torsk og lyr kraftig redusert, økte igjen i 50 årene, men i midten, av 70-årene inntraff et nytt dramatisk fall for alle tre artene. Etter en rekke svake årsklasser har torsk hatt god rekruttering i både 1995 og 96. Statens forurensningstilsyn (SFT)

Prosjektet har hatt som mål å vurdere hypoteser om årsaker til nedgang i forekomsten av yngel av torskefisk på Skagerrakkysten, samt avklare om det finnes metodikk og data for å kunne belyse sammenhenger med tilførsler av forurensende stoff. De foreliggende data synes å peke i retning av en eutrofieffekt, evt. med andre samvirkende mekanismer i markert forurensede fjordområder. For flere aktuelle fjordområder bør det være grunnlag for å beregne tidsutvikling for tilførsler av næringssalter og miljøgifter. En videreføring av forprosjektet foreslås. The lack of a firm relationship between wind speed (U10) and gas transfer velocity (k) is considered to be one of the factors that hinders accurate quantification of interannual variations of ocean–atmosphere CO2 fluxes. In this paper the interannual variations of k of using four different k–U10 parametrizations are examined using wind speed data from the NCEP/NCAR reanalysis project. The extent to which interannual variations are faithfully reproduced in the NCEP/NCAR data is also investigated. This is carried out through comparison with QuikSCAT data. Compared with 4 yr of QuikSCAT data, NCEP/NCAR data reproduce interannual k variations, although the absolute magnitude of k is underestimated. Interannual k variation shows great sensitivity to selection of k–U10 parametrization, and in the Westerlies it changes by a factor of three depending on k–U10 parametrization. Use of monthly mean winds speeds leads to overestimation of interannual k variations compared with k variations computed using 6-hourly wind speeds and the appropriate k–U10 parametrization. Even though the effect of changing k–U10 parametrization is large enough to be an issue that needs to be considered when computing interannual air–sea CO2 flux variations through combining estimates of k with data for the air–sea CO2 gradient, it is not sufficient to bridge the gap between such estimates and estimates based on analyses of atmospheric oxygen, CO2 and δ13C data. Finally it is shown that the ambiguity in the relationship between wind speed and k introduces an uncertainty in interannual flux variations comparable to a bias of interannual ΔpCO2 variations of at most ±5 µatm.

The Surface Ocean CO₂ Atlas (SOCAT), an activity of the international marine carbon research community, provides access to synthesis and gridded fCO₂ (fugacity of carbon dioxide) products for the surface oceans. Version 2 of SOCAT is an update of the previous release (version 1) with more data (increased from 6.3 million to 10.1 million surface water fCO₂ values) and extended data coverage (from 1968–2007 to 1968–2011). The quality control criteria, while identical in both versions, have been applied more strictly in version 2 than in version 1. The SOCAT website (http://www.socat.info/) has links to quality control comments, metadata, individual data set files, and synthesis and gridded data products. Interactive online tools allow visitors to explore the richness of the data. Applications of SOCAT include process studies, quantification of the ocean carbon sink and its spatial, seasonal, year-to-year and longerterm variation, as well as initialisation or validation of ocean carbon models and coupled climate-carbon models.

Here we present monthly, basin-wide maps of the partial pressure of carbon dioxide (pCO2) for the North Atlantic on a 1° latitude by 1° longitude grid for years 2004 through 2006 inclusive. The maps have been computed using a neural network technique which reconstructs the non-linear relationships between three biogeochemical parameters and marine pCO2. A self organizing map (SOM) neural network has been trained using 389 000 triplets of the SeaWiFS-MODIS chlorophyll-a concentration, the NCEP/NCAR reanalysis sea surface temperature, and the FOAM mixed layer depth. The trained SOM was labelled with 137 000 underway pCO2 measurements collected in situ during 2004, 2005 and 2006 in the North Atlantic, spanning the range of 208 to 437 μatm. The root mean square error (RMSE) of the neural network fit to the data is 11.6 μatm, which equals to just above 3 per cent of an average pCO2 value in the in situ dataset. The seasonal pCO2 cycle as well as estimates of the interannual variability in the major biogeochemical provinces are presented and discussed. High resolution combined with basin-wide coverage makes the maps a useful tool for several applications such as the monitoring of basin-wide air-sea CO2 fluxes or improvement of seasonal and interannual marine CO2 cycles in future model predictions. The method itself is a valuable alternative to traditional statistical modelling techniques used in geosciences.

8 pages, 2 figures, Research Infrastructures (RIs) are large-scale facilities encompassing instruments, resources, data and services used by the scientific community to conduct high-level research in their respective fields. The development and integration of marine environmental RIs as European Research Vessel Operators [ERVO] (2020) is the response of the European Commission (EC) to global marine challenges through research, technological development and innovation. These infrastructures (EMSO ERIC, Euro-Argo ERIC, ICOS-ERIC Marine, LifeWatch ERIC, and EMBRC-ERIC) include specialized vessels, fixed-point monitoring systems, Lagrangian floats, test facilities, genomics observatories, bio-sensing, and Virtual Research Environments (VREs), among others. Marine ecosystems are vital for life on Earth. Global climate change is progressing rapidly, and geo-hazards, such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and tsunamis, cause large losses of human life and have massive worldwide socio-economic impacts. Enhancing our marine environmental monitoring and prediction capabilities will increase our ability to respond adequately to major challenges and efficiently. Collaboration among European marine RIs aligns with and has contributed to the OceanObs’19 Conference statement and the objectives of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021–2030). This collaboration actively participates and supports concrete actions to increase the quality and quantity of more integrated and sustained observations in the ocean worldwide. From an innovation perspective, the next decade will increasingly count on marine RIs to support the development of new technologies and their validation in the field, increasing market uptake and produce a shift in observing capabilities and strategies, Parts of this paper have been supported by EU projects EMSODEV contract 676555 (see EMSODEV, 2020), and EMSO-Link contract 731036

Motivation The BioTIME database contains raw data on species identities and abundances in ecological assemblages through time. These data enable users to calculate temporal trends in biodiversity within and amongst assemblages using a broad range of metrics. BioTIME is being developed as a community-led open-source database of biodiversity time series. Our goal is to accelerate and facilitate quantitative analysis of temporal patterns of biodiversity in the Anthropocene. Main types of variables included The database contains 8,777,413 species abundance records, from assemblages consistently sampled for a minimum of 2 years, which need not necessarily be consecutive. In addition, the database contains metadata relating to sampling methodology and contextual information about each record. Spatial location and grain BioTIME is a global database of 547,161 unique sampling locations spanning the marine, freshwater and terrestrial realms. Grain size varies across datasets from 0.0000000158 km2 (158 cm2) to 100 km2 (1,000,000,000,000 cm2). Time period and grain BioTIME records span from 1874 to 2016. The minimal temporal grain across all datasets in BioTIME is a year. Major taxa and level of measurement BioTIME includes data from 44,440 species across the plant and animal kingdoms, ranging from plants, plankton and terrestrial invertebrates to small and large vertebrates.
