Many head acceleration events (HAEs) observed in youth football emanate from a practice environment. This study aimed to evaluate HAEs in youth football practice drills using a mouthpiece-based sensor, differentiating between inertial and direct HAEs. Head acceleration data were collected from athletes participating on 2 youth football teams (ages 11–13 y) using an instrumented mouthpiece-based sensor during all practice sessions in a single season. Video was recorded and analyzed to verify and assign HAEs to specific practice drill characteristics, including drill intensity, drill classification, and drill type. HAEs were quantified in terms of HAEs per athlete per minute and peak linear and rotational acceleration and rotational velocity. Mixed-effects models were used to evaluate the differences in kinematics, and generalized linear models were used to assess differences in HAE frequency between drill categories. A total of 3237 HAEs were verified and evaluated from 29 football athletes enrolled in this study. Head kinematics varied significantly between drill categorizations. HAEs collected at higher intensities resulted in significantly greater kinematics than lower-intensity drills. The results of this study add to the growing body of evidence informing evidence-based strategies to reduce head impact exposure and concussion risk in youth football practices.

Background: Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) measures of ambient air pollution are associated with accelerated age-related cognitive impairment, and Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD). Objective: We examined associations between air pollution, four cognitive factors, and the moderating role of apolipoprotein E (APOE) genotype in the understudied period of midlife. Methods: Participants were ∼1,100 men in the Vietnam Era Twin Study of Aging. Baseline cognitive assessments were from 2003 to 2007. Measures included past (1993–1999) and recent (3 years prior to baseline assessment) PM2.5 and NO2 exposure, in-person assessment of episodic memory, executive function, verbal fluency, and processing speed, and APOE genotype. Average baseline age was 56 years with a 12-year follow-up. Analyses adjusted for health and lifestyle covariates. Results: Performance in all cognitive domains declined from age 56 to 68. Higher PM2.5 exposures were associated with worse general verbal fluency. We found significant exposure-by-APOE genotype interactions for specific cognitive domains: PM2.5 with executive function and NO2 with episodic memory. Higher PM2.5 exposure was related to worse executive function in APOE ɛ4 carriers, but not in non-carriers. There were no associations with processing speed. Conclusion: These results indicate negative effects of ambient air pollution exposure on fluency alongside intriguing differential modifications of cognitive performance by APOE genotype. APOE ɛ4 carriers appeared more sensitive to environmental differences. The process by which air pollution and its interaction with genetic risk for ADRD affects risk for later life cognitive decline or progression to dementia may begin in midlife.

Stimulation of α1-adrenergic receptors eliminated age-related differences in passive leg movement (PLM) by decreasing PLM-induced vasodilation in the young. Systemic β-blockade attenuated the central hemodynamic component of the PLM response in young individuals. Inhibition of α-adrenergic receptors did not improve the PLM response in older individuals, though withdrawal of α-adrenergic modulation augmented baseline and maximal vasodilation in both groups. Accordingly, α-adrenergic signaling plays a role in modulating the PLM vasodilatory response in young but not in old adults, and elevated α-adrenergic tone does not appear to contribute to the attenuated vascular function with age identified by PLM.

Purpose: Methods for cough elicitation frequently involve aerosolized tussive agents. Here, we sought to determine whether healthy individuals demonstrate a quantifiable cough response after inhaling a volatile ester and if breath control techniques modify this chemically induced cough response. Method: Sixty adult male and female participants inhaled prepared liquid dilutions of ethyl butyrate dissolved in paraffin oil at 20%, 40%, and 60% v/v concentrations in triplicate, with presentation order randomized. We delivered stimuli through a face mask connected to an olfactometer and respiratory pneumotachograph. Participants rated sensations of their urge to cough and pleasantness of the odor while cough airflow was measured. Following baseline testing, participants were randomized to implement pursed-lip breathing or slow-paced breathing after inhaling ethyl butyrate to determine the effects of breath control on cough measures. Results: Inhaled ethyl butyrate elicited cough in 70% of participants. Higher concentrations of ethyl butyrate resulted in significantly greater sensation of the urge to cough, F (2, 80) = 10.72, p < .001, and significantly more generated coughs, F (2, 63) = 13.14, p < .001. Compared to baseline, participants rated significantly decreased urge to cough during breath control techniques, F (1, 40) = 11.01, p = .0019. No significant changes were observed in the number of generated coughs between baseline and breath control techniques, F (1, 31) = 7.23, p = .01. Conclusions: Airborne ethyl butyrate is a tussigenic agent in humans. Our findings provide opportunities for future research directions in normal and disordered cough responses to volatile compounds.

An exaggerated mean arterial blood pressure (MAP) response to exercise in patients with peripheral artery disease (PAD), likely driven by inflammation and oxidative stress and, perhaps, required to achieve an adequate blood flow response, is well described. However, the blood flow response to exercise in patients with PAD actually remains equivocal. Therefore, eight patients with PAD and eight healthy controls completed 3 min of plantar flexion exercise at both an absolute work rate (WR) (2.7 W, to evaluate blood flow) and a relative intensity (40%WRmax, to evaluate MAP). The exercise-induced change in popliteal artery blood flow (BF, Ultrasound Doppler), MAP (Finapress), and vascular conductance (VC) were quantified. In addition, resting markers of inflammation and oxidative stress were measured in plasma and muscle biopsies. Exercise-induced ΔBF, assessed at 2.7 W, was lower in PAD compared with controls (PAD: 251 ± 150 vs. Controls: 545 ± 187 mL/min, P < 0.001), whereas ΔMAP, assessed at 40%WRmax, was greater for PAD (PAD: 23 ± 14 vs. Controls: 11 ± 6 mmHg, P = 0.028). The exercise-induced ΔVC was lower for PAD during both the absolute WR (PAD: 1.9 ± 1.6 vs. Controls: 4.7 ± 1.9 mL/min/mmHg) and relative intensity exercise (PAD: 1.9 ± 1.8 vs. Controls: 5.0 ± 2.2 mL/min/mmHg) trials (both, P < 0.01). Inflammatory and oxidative stress markers, including plasma interleukin-6 and muscle protein carbonyls, were elevated in PAD (both, P < 0.05), and significantly correlated with the hemodynamic changes during exercise ( r = −0.57 to −0.78, P < 0.05). Thus, despite an exaggerated ΔMAP response, patients with PAD exhibit an impaired exercise-induced ΔBF and ΔVC, and both inflammation and oxidative stress likely play a role in this attenuated hemodynamic response.

This paper sheds light to the crucial role being played by army officers not just in the site of interest which is Philippines but also in almost all countries taking into consideration security practices and Incident Command System on safety procedures. In effect, as to the significant differences in the assessment of the respondents on the internal security practices of the Philippine Army considering variables of the present study where p values are generally higher than the level of significance, has resulted to the acceptance of the null hypothesis of no significant difference. This presupposes that intervening variables move in a somewhat the same direction but different magnitude. In the context of the current academic piece, this implies that respondents are performing satisfactorily their functions in acquiescence to the commanding authority and is compliant with ICS. After careful scrutiny of data, researchers recommend that Philippine Army shall issue relevant policies for authorization of its personnel to visit other offices nationwide. On operational security, the P.A.’s treasury office or finance office shall be secured properly by security personnel or military police. For future researches, relevant studies may be conducted to a widened scope to improve the internal security practices of the P.A. exploring other relevant variables and its compliance to the security management system. As for international security standards, benchmarking on safety practices and procedures among allied countries be cultivated and reinforced to ameliorate its treaty and ensure its international resiliency against potential threat both natural and man-made.

We assessed attraction of pine engraver, Ips pini (Say) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae; Scolytinae), to pheromone-baited funnel traps treated with repellent semiochemicals in ponderosa pine, Pinus ponderosa var. scopulorum Engelm., forests in northern Arizona. Treatments included: 1) baited control (B, ipsdienol + lanierone), 2) 70 g of SPLAT Verb (a flowable, biodegradable formulation containing 10% verbenone, ISCA Technologies Inc., Riverside, CA, USA) + B, 3) 70 g of SPLAT Verb + (E)-2-hexen-1-ol+(Z)-2-hexen-1-ol + acetophenone + B, 4) 7.84-g verbenone pouch (Product #3413, Synergy Semiochemicals Corp., Delta, British Columbia, Canada) + B, and 5) 7.84-g verbenone pouch + (E)-2-hexen-1-ol+(Z)-2-hexen-1-ol + acetophenone + B. In total, 472 I. pini were collected. Trap catches were highest in baited traps and declined significantly with the addition of both formulations of verbenone. Traps treated with SPLAT Verb caught significantly fewer I. pini and male I. pini than those treated with verbenone pouches. The addition of (E)-2-hexen-1-ol+(Z)-2-hexen-1-ol + acetophenone to SPLAT Verb and the verbenone pouch had no effect on trap catch. Verbenone has potential as an effective tool for protecting P. ponderosa trees and slash from I. pini in northern Arizona, but the addition of (E)-2-hexen-1-ol+(Z)-2-hexen-1-ol + acetophenone to verbenone is unwarranted.

Most transcriptome-wide association studies (TWASs) so far focus on European ancestry and lack diversity. To overcome this limitation, we aggregated genome-wide association study (GWAS) summary statistics, whole-genome sequences and expression quantitative trait locus (eQTL) data from diverse ancestries. We developed a new approach, TESLA (multi-ancestry integrative study using an optimal linear combination of association statistics), to integrate an eQTL dataset with a multi-ancestry GWAS. By exploiting shared phenotypic effects between ancestries and accommodating potential effect heterogeneities, TESLA improves power over other TWAS methods. When applied to tobacco use phenotypes, TESLA identified 273 new genes, up to 55% more compared with alternative TWAS methods. These hits and subsequent fine mapping using TESLA point to target genes with biological relevance. In silico drug-repurposing analyses highlight several drugs with known efficacy, including dextromethorphan and galantamine, and new drugs such as muscle relaxants that may be repurposed for treating nicotine addiction.

We investigate properties of strings which are expressible by canonical types of string constraints. Specifically, we consider a landscape of 20 logical theories, whose syntax is built around combinations of four common elements of string constraints: language membership (e.g. for regular languages), concatenation, equality between string terms, and equality between string-lengths. For a variable x and formula f from a given theory, we consider the set of values for which x may be substituted as part of a satisfying assignment, or in other words, the property f expresses through x. Since we consider string-based logics, this set is a formal language. We firstly consider the relative expressive power of different combinations of string constraints by comparing the classes of languages expressible in the corresponding theories, and are able to establish a mostly complete picture in this regard. Secondly, we consider the question of deciding whether the language or property expressed by a variable/formula in one theory can be expressed in another theory. We establish several negative results which are relevant to preprocessing and normalisation of string constraints in practice. Some of our results have strong connections to important open problems regarding word equations and the theory of string solving.

Soccer, one of the most popular sports in the world, has one of the highest rates of sports-related concussions. Additionally, soccer players are frequently exposed to nonconcussive impacts from intentionally heading the ball, a fundamental component of the sport. There have been many studies on head impact exposure in soccer, but few focus on soccer practices or practice activities. This study aimed to characterize the frequency and magnitude of head impacts in National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I female soccer practice activities using a custom-fit instrumented mouthpiece. Sixteen players were instrumented over the course of 54 practice sessions. Video analysis was performed to verify all mouthpiece-recorded events and classify practice activities. Category groupings of practice activities include technical training, team interaction, set pieces, position-specific, and other. Differences in head impact rates and peak resultant kinematics were observed across activity types and category groupings. Technical training had the highest impact rate compared to other category groupings. Impacts occurring during set piece activities had the highest mean kinematic values. Understanding drill exposure can help inform coaches on training plans aimed to reduce head impact exposure for their athletes.

Plasmon-assisted harmonic generation in highly-doped graphene nanoribbons is strongly enhanced by the nonlocal optical response associated with large electromagnetic field gradients in closely-spaced ribbons that have optimal size and position.

Titanium anodization has been shown to produce crystalline oxides exhibiting photocatalytic reactions that form reactive oxygen species (ROS) when exposed to UV light. The ROS subsequently attack bacteria cells, and thus reduce bacteria attachment on titanium implant surfaces. Polyaniline (PANI) is a conductive polymer that has shown antibacterial properties when electropolymerized onto titanium. Our research group hypothesized the addition of PANI to crystalline titanium oxide surfaces would increase the available free electrons and thus increase photocatalytic activity (PCA). This research led to the development of a novel single-step anodization approach for PANI doping crystalline titanium oxide layers. The objective of the present study was to determine the proper aniline electrolyte concentration needed to maximize the PCA and reduce bacterial attachment on the formed oxides. Aniline concentrations up to 1 M were added into a 1 M sulfuric acid electrolyte. The formed oxides exhibited increased PANI surface coverage but decreased anatase and rutile crystalline titanium oxide phase formation with increasing aniline electrolyte concentrations. Despite exhibiting the lowest levels of anatase and rutile formation, the 0.75 M and 1 M aniline oxides with the greatest PANI surface coverage also exhibited the highest PCA levels. 1 M aniline oxides showed significantly higher PCA under UVA irradiation compared to oxides formed from aniline concentrations up to 0.5 M (p 0.001). 0.75 M aniline oxides exhibited significant reductions in Staphylococcus aureus attachment with or without UVA irradiation compared to control oxides without PANI. MTT and live/dead assays confirmed cytocompatibility and nearly 100% cell viability for the PANI doped oxides.

This study investigated the atmospheric deposition of microplastics (MPs) in Auckland, New Zealand, from two sampling sites over a 9-week period. The sizes, morphologies, number counts, and mass concentrations of specific polymers were determined for airborne MPs using a combination of a Nile Red-assisted automated fluorescence microscopy technique in series with pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (Pyr-GC/MS). This enabled a larger number of MPs to be analyzed from each sample compared to traditional spectroscopic techniques. Microplastic number concentrations increased exponentially with decreasing size. The results show the importance of using consistent methodologies and size cutoffs when comparing microplastic data between studies. Eight polymers were quantified in the atmospheric deposition samples, with polyethylene (PE), polycarbonate (PC), and poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) being the most commonly observed. Foreign body ingestions are a common presentation in the emergency department (ED), particularly in young children.We sought to determine whether the COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns had an effect on the proportion of foreign body ingestions.We performed a retrospective review of the Pediatric Health Information System for patients younger than 19 years who were identified by International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision codes for foreign body ingestion. We analyzed patients in the following three groups: young children (younger than 5 years), school-aged children (5-12 years), and adolescents (13 years and older), using an interrupted time series analysis. Our primary outcome was the difference in proportion of foreign body ingestions. We compared 1 year after the declaration of the COVID-19 pandemic (March 13, 2020 to March 31, 2021) with the previous 3 years (March 1, 2017 to March 12, 2020).Total pediatric ED encounters decreased in the post period (p0.01); 4902 patients per year presented for foreign body ingestion pre-COVID-19 shutdown vs. 5235 patients per year post-COVID-19 shutdown. In all three age groups (young children, school-age children, and adolescents), there was a higher proportion of foreign body ingestions post-COVID-19 shutdown (p0.01, p0.01, and p = 0.028, respectively), driven primarily by the decrease in total ED encounters. In the youngest age group (younger than 5 years), there was also a significant increase in slope for foreign body ingestions post-COVID-19 (p = 0.010).The proportion of foreign body ingestions increased after the declaration of the COVID-19 pandemic, primarily driven by an overall decrease in total ED volume.

Here, we identify, confirm, and replicate the biomarker performance characteristics of candidate proteins in patients with DILI at onset (DO; n = 133) and follow-up (n = 120), acute non-DILI at onset (NDO; n = 63) and follow-up (n = 42), and healthy volunteers (HV; n = 104). Area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) for cytoplasmic aconitate hydratase, argininosuccinate synthase, carbamoylphosphate synthase, fumarylacetoacetase, fructose-1,6-bisphosphatase 1 (FBP1) across cohorts achieved near complete separation (range: 0.94-0.99) of DO and HV. In addition, we show that FBP1, alone or in combination with glutathione S-transferase A1 and leukocyte cell-derived chemotaxin 2, could potentially assist in clinical diagnosis by distinguishing NDO from DO (AUC range: 0.65-0.78), but further technical and clinical validation of these candidate biomarkers is needed.

Bilateral optic disc swelling is a common finding but rarely associated with multiple cranial neuropathies. In this case, an 18-year-old man presented with subacute sequential hearing loss followed by subacute sequential visual loss. Clinical examination revealed bilateral optic disc swelling. Lumbar puncture revealed a normal opening pressure of 15 cmH2o. This case discusses a rare but important cause of bilateral optic disc swelling in the context of hearing loss, disequilibrium, and a normal CSF opening pressure. An overview of the literature is provided, and treatment options are discussed to guide further management of similar cases.

Peripheral artery disease (PAD) causes lower extremity dysfunction and is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular mortality and morbidity. In this study, we analyzed how non-invasive 2-dimensional-phase-contrast magnetic resonance imaging (2D-PC-MRI) measured velocity markers of the distal superficial femoral artery (SFA) are associated with clinical and functional characteristics of PAD. A total of 70 (27 diabetic and 43 non-diabetic) PAD patients were included in this secondary analysis of data collected from the Effect of Lipid Modification on Peripheral Artery Disease after Endovascular Intervention Trial (ELIMIT). Electrocardiographically (ECG)-gated 2D-PC-MRI was performed at a proximal and a distal imaging location of the distal SFA. Baseline characteristics did not differ between diabetic and non-diabetic PAD patients. Claudication onset time (COT) was shorter in diabetic PAD patients compared to non-diabetics (0.56 (inter quartile range (IQR): 0.3, 2.04) minutes vs. 1.30 (IQR: 1.13, 2.15) minutes, p = 0.025). In a pooled analysis of all 70 PAD patients, maximum velocity was significantly higher in the proximal compared with the distal SFA segment (43.97 (interquartile range (IQR): 20.4, 65.2) cm/s; vs. 34.9 (IQR: 16.87, 51.71) cm/s; p 0.001). The maximum velocities in both the proximal and distal SFA segments were significantly higher in diabetic PAD patients compared with non-diabetics (proximal: 53.6 (IQR: 38.73, 89.43) cm/s vs. 41.49 (IQR: 60.75, 15.9) cm/s, p = 0.033; distal: 40.8 (IQR: 23.7, 71.90) cm/s vs. 27.4 (IQR: 41.67, 12.54) cm/s, p = 0.012). Intra-observer variability, as assessed by intraclass correlation (ICC) analysis, was excellent for SFA mean and maximum velocities (0.996 (confidence interval [CI]: 0.996, 0.997); 0.999 (CI: 0.999, 0.999)). In conclusion, 2D-PC-MRI SFA velocity measures are reproducible and may be of interest in assessing diabetic and non-diabetic PAD patients.

Background: This brief report provides an overview of the Active Healthy Kids Global Alliance (AHKGA); an introduction to the Global Matrix 4.0; an explanation of the value and opportunities that the AHKGA efforts and assets provide to the physical activity research, policy, practice, and advocacy community; an outline of the series of papers related to the Global Matrix 4.0 in this issue of the Journal of Physical Activity and Health; and an invitation for future involvement. Methods: The AHKGA was formed to help power the global movement to get kids moving. In 2019–2021, we recruited countries to participate in the Global Matrix 4.0, a worldwide initiative to assess, compare, and contrast the physical activity of children and adolescents. Results: A total of 57 countries/jurisdictions (hereafter referred to as countries for simplicity) were recruited. The current activities of the AHKGA are summarized. The overall findings of the Global Matrix 4.0 are presented in a series of papers in this issue of the Journal of Physical Activity and Health. Conclusions: The Global Matrix 4.0 and other assets of the AHKGA are publicly available, and physical activity researchers, practitioners, policy makers, and advocates are encouraged to exploit these resources to further their efforts.

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is a leading cause of chronic liver disease, cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma in humans, and afflicts more than 58 million people worldwide. The HCV envelope E1 and E2 glycoproteins are essential for viral entry and infection, and comprise the primary antigenic target for neutralizing antibody responses. The molecular mechanisms of E1E2 assembly, as well as how the E1E2 heterodimer binds broadly neutralizing antibodies, remains elusive. We present the cryo-electron microscopy (cryoEM) structure of the membrane-extracted full-length E1E2 heterodimer in complex with broadly neutralizing antibodies (bNAbs) AR4A, AT12009 and IGH505 at ∼3.5 Å resolution. We resolve the long sought-after interface between the E1 and E2 ectodomains and reveal how it is stabilized by hydrophobic interactions and glycans. This structure deepens our understanding of the HCV fusion glycoprotein and delivers a blueprint for the rational design of novel vaccine immunogens and anti-viral drugs.

Primary purpose was to identify relationships between performance-based measures onto both computerized adaptive testing [Physical Function-Computer Adaptive Testing (PF-CAT)] and joint-specific legacy [Knee injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score-Activities of Daily Living (KOOS-ADL)] instruments pre- and 12-month post-TKA.The PF-CAT and KOOS-ADL were identified as outcomes and performance on the 40-m fast-paced walking test, stair climb test and chair stand test were identified as predictors. Linear regression was used for all comparisons after adjusting for confounders.Sixty-eight people with TKA (56.7% male) were tested. Better scores on the 40-m fast-paced walking (KOOS-ADL,Self-reported instruments are a moderate, but inconsistent surrogate to performance-based measures pre- and post-TKA. Our findings indicate that both self-reported and performance-based measures are necessary to fully characterize physical function and should be used jointly to aid in the recovery analysis of people undergoing TKA.Implications for RehabilitationMonitoring the trajectory of pre- to post-total knee arthroplasty (TKA) physical function is important as it directly relates to mortality, morbidity and poorer quality of life in older adults.Both self-reported and performance-based measures of physical function are used to determine progress in recovery for patients pre- and post- TKA.This study provides evidence that perceived physical function measures are a moderate, but an inconsistent, surrogate to objective physical function measures pre- and post-TKA.Joint specific deficits in knee range of motion and quadriceps strength were weakly associated with deficits in function measures pre-TKA, but no association was observed 12-month post-TKA.Our findings indicate that both self-reported and performance-based measures are necessary to fully characterize physical function and should be used jointly to aid in the complete recovery analysis of people undergoing TKA.

This paper is a synopsis of an invited lecture entitled, The Future of Renal Nutrition, that was presented at the Japanese Society of Dialysis Therapy, July 2022. The purpose of this presentation is to suggest some of the advances in the field of renal nutrition that the authors think are likely to occur during the next several years. There will be continued development of methods for precisely diagnosing and classifying protein-energy wasting and developing methods to treat this disorder. Why weight loss commonly occurs when the GFR decreases to about 30–35 mL/min/1.73 m2 and why substantial weight loss (>5%/year) is associated with increased mortality will be investigated. Clinical consequences of the interactions between gut microbiota, nutrient intake and other environmental influences will continue to be examined. The clinical value of diets high in fruits and vegetables or other plants for chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients will continue to be studied. Our knowledge of how different diets and medicines affect intestinal absorption, metabolism and excretion of nutrients will expand. Precision medicine will be extended to precision nutrition. There will be more focus on the effects of nutritional disorders and dietary treatment on the emotional status and quality of life of people with kidney disease and their families. Nutritional centers that provide centralized nutritional assessment and dietary counselling for CKD patients may develop in more urban centers. More clinical trials will be conducted to test whether nutritional management improves clinical outcomes in people with kidney disease. It is hoped that the foregoing comments will encourage more research on these topics.

Adverse hemodynamic responses to exercise in patients with hypertension, despite antihypertensive medication, indicate a sustained cardiovascular risk. The efficacy of dietary nitrate to improve limb vascular conductance during exercise was inversely dependent on the magnitude of exercising limb vascular conductance at baseline, rather than antihypertensive medication status. The effects of dietary nitrate on hemodynamics during exercise in patients with hypertension are dependent on the values at baseline and independent of antihypertensive medication status.

Transient absorption (TA) spectroscopy has proved fundamental to our understanding of energy and charge transfer in biological systems, allowing measurements of photoactive proteins on sub-picosecond timescales. Recently, ultrafast TA spectroscopy has been applied in vivo, providing sub-picosecond measurements of photosynthetic light harvesting and electron transfer processes within living photosynthetic microorganisms. The analysis of the resultant data is hindered by the number of different photoactive pigments and the associated complexity of photoactive reaction schemes within living cells. Here we show how in vivo ultrafast TA spectroscopy can be applied to a diverse array of organisms from the tree of life, both photosynthetic and non-photosynthetic. We have developed a series of software tools for performing global, lifetime and target analysis of in vivo TA datasets. More than two dozen MERMAIDs floating in the South Pacific recorded the hydro- and seismo-acoustic signals excited by the 15 January 2022 Hunga Tonga Hunga Ha’apai eruption. MERMAID, short for Mobile Earthquake Recording in Marine Areas by Independent Divers, is an oceanic mid-column float designed to autonomously record and report high-frequency (~1 Hz) teleseismic P waves useful for global tomography. MERMAID is a diver: it records acoustic data streams via its hydrophone at depth and surfaces roughly once a week to transmit those data via satellite. Its algorithms prioritize the isolation of short (minutes-long) data segments containing P waves. However, MERMAID's data buffer remains retrievable via two-way Iridium communication for one year. We made first-of-their kind multi-hour requests to capture the eruptive process recorded across the South Pacific Plume Imaging and Modeling array. We primarily focus on the high-frequency (5+ Hz) T-wave signals, broadly described as a double-peaked onset followed by a sustained high-SNR ``rumble'' lasting roughly 30 minutes. Many MERMAIDs across the array — at varied distances and backazimuths — exhibit high correlations of this main wave packet, however some do not. We investigate the reasons for intra-array variability in the shape and amplitude of the main wave packet, with particular emphasis given to understanding the role of bathymetry. Finally we discuss the public MERMAID data set currently available through EarthScope, and their accompanying new metadata standard called GeoCSV, which was recently approved for implementation by the FDSN Working Group 5 to track our, and other, moving seismometers., The 28th IUGG General Assembly (IUGG2023) (Berlin 2023)

The foraging (for) gene of Drosophila melanogaster encodes a cGMP-dependent protein kinase (PKG), which is a major effector of the cGMP signaling pathway involved in the regulation of behaviour and metabolic traits. Despite being well studied at the transcript level, little is known about the for gene at the protein level. Here, we provide a detailed characterization of the for gene protein (FOR) products and present new tools for their study, including five isoform-specific antibodies and a transgenic strain that carries an HA-labelled for allele (forBAC::HA). Our results showed that multiple FOR isoforms were expressed in the larval and adult stages of D. melanogaster and that the majority of whole-body FOR expression arises from three (P1, P1α, and P3) of eight putative protein isoforms. We found that FOR expression differed between the larval and adult stages and between the dissected larval organs we analyzed, which included the central nervous system (CNS), fat body, carcass, and intestine. Moreover, we showed that the FOR expression differed between two allelic variants of the for gene, namely, fors (sitter) and forR (rover), that are known to differ in many food-related traits. Together, our in vivo identification of FOR isoforms and the existence of temporal, spatial, and genetic differences in their expression lay the groundwork for determining their functional significance.

The objective of this study was to utilize an instrumented mouthpiece sensor to characterize head kinematics experienced by grassroots dirt track race car drivers.Four dirt track race car drivers (ages 16-19) were instrumented with custom mouthpiece sensors capable of accurately measuring head motion during racing. Sensors were deployed before races and recorded tri-axial linear acceleration and rotational velocity for approximately 10 min at 200 Hz. Film review was performed to identify data associated with racing laps. For each lap, moving average kinematics were computed and subtracted from the head motion signals to obtain 'adjusted' head motion accounting for lower frequency variance due to periodic motion around the track. From adjusted data, linear and angular head perturbations (i.e., deviations from moving average) were extracted using a custom algorithm.Data was collected during 400 driver-races. A total of 2438 laps were segmented from mouthpiece recordings. The median (95th percentile) peak linear acceleration, rotational velocity, and rotational acceleration of all laps were 5.33 (8.28) g, 2.89 (4.60) rad/s, and 179 (310) rad/sMouthpiece sensors can be used to measure head kinematics during active racing. Laps, head perturbations, and crashes may be useful units of observation to describe typical head kinematic exposure experienced by drivers while racing. Subsequent research is needed to understand the associations between repetitive racing exposure and neurological function. Higher magnitude events (i.e., crashes) are not uncommon and may result in concussion or more severe injury. Results represent novel characterizations of head kinematic exposure experienced in a dirt track racing environment. This information may inform evidence-based strategies (e.g., vehicle/seat design) to improve driver safety.
