Nutritional and lifestyle interventions for optimizing skeletal health are key adjuncts to pharmacologic therapy in the treatment of osteopenia and osteoporosis. Sufficient calcium and vitamin D intake is critical for maintaining bone homeostasis and dysregulation of their metabolism results in significant bone pathology. Lifestyle interventions such as exercise, smoking cessation, and abstinence from alcohol are also important non-pharmacological interventions for optimizing skeletal health and should be a part of any comprehensive regimen for the treatment of metabolic bone disease. Vitamin K and strontium are additional essential nutrients that are currently being investigated for their role in augmenting bone health. Here we review the data regarding their use and offer insight into the clinical question of to whom and when dietary supplementation with these agents is recommended.
