Resumo Introdução: As emoções ocupam um papel fundamental e determinante no desenvolvimento pessoal e profissional dos enfermeiros, assim como na prestação de cuidados que realizam. Objetivos: Conhecer as variáveis sociodemográficas que caraterizam a população em estudo e quais as correlações existentes entre a competência emocional e as suas dimensões. Métodos: Estudo descritivo, exploratório, abordagem quantitativa, desenvolvido num hospital psiquiátrico da Região Norte de Portugal. Para recolha de informação foi utilizada: Escala Veiga da Competência Emocional. A colheita de dados foi realizada durante o mês de dezembro 2021. Foram cumpridos os pressupostos da Comissão de Ética de acordo com Declaração Helsínquia. A população em estudo foi constituída por 40 enfermeiros, sendo os critérios de inclusão: enfermeiros em situação laboral ativa no cuidado à pessoa com doença mental internada. Resultados: Verificou-se que na sua maioria os participantes eram do sexo feminino (58,76%), com idades compreendidas entre 26-55 anos. Quanto às habilitações académicas, a maioria dos participantes (53,4%) apresentava licenciatura, sendo que 38,9% apresentava a especialidade. Relativamente ao grau de importância, atribuído às questões situação profissional, foi considerado numa escala de Likert: 1 “sem importância”, 5 “muito importante”, como sendo, muito importante “relação interpessoal com os outros”, “estabilidade emocional na relação com os outros” e “estabilidade emocional na prestação de cuidados”, 79% (n=31). Conclusão: Verificou-se correlações entre as variáveis sexo/habilitações académicas. No sexo feminino, foi possível verificar que este perceciona-se, “frequentemente”, empático na prestação de cuidados. Enfermeiros com título especialista também se percecionam como profissionais empáticos, quando comparados com enfermeiros de cuidados gerais. Objectives: To explore the sociodemographic variables that characterize the sample under study and the correlations between emotional competence and its dimensions. Methods: Descriptive, exploratory study, quantitative approach, developed in a psychiatric hospital in the Northern Region of Portugal. The collection of information was performed using the Veiga Scale of Emotional Competence. Data collection was carried out in December 2021. The Ethics Committee followed the Helsinki Declaration guidelines. The sample consisted of 40 nurses, and the inclusion criteria were: nurses working with hospitalized people with mental illness. Results: Most participants were female (58.76%), aged between 26 and 55. Regarding academic qualifications, most participants (53.4%) had a degree, and 38.9% had a speciality. Concerning the degree of importance attributed to the professional situation issues, a Likert scale was used: 1 "unimportant", 5 "very important", as being very important, "interpersonal relationship with others", "emotional stability in the relationship with others" and "emotional stability in care delivery", 79% (n=31). Conclusion: Correlations were found between gender and academic qualifications. It was possible to verify that women nurses “often” perceive themselves as empathetic in the provision of care. Nurses with a specialist title also perceive themselves as empathetic professionals compared to general care nurses. Background: Previous findings have shown that neuroticism is a higher-order vulnerability factor in the development and maintenance of sexual dysfunctions and can have an impact on the attentional processing of sexual stimuli; however, the influence of psychosexual dimensions on the early automatic phases of such cognitive processes has not been established yet.Aim: Examine the mediating role of sexual inhibition/excitation propensity in the relationship between neuroticism and automatic attention to visual erotica and identify the neuroelectric correlates of such a process. Methods: We analysed the answers provided by 58 individuals in a sociodemographic questionnaire, in the Neuroticism subscale of the NEO-Personality Inventory-Revised (NEO PI-R) and in the Sexual Inhibition/Excitation Scales (SIS/SES). Event-related potentials (ERP) P1, P2 and N2 were recorded during a modified oddball paradigm containing romantic and sexually explicit pictures. Parallel mediations were performed to simultaneously test the mediating role of sexual inhibition/excitation in the relationship between neuroticism and each ERP of interest. Outcomes: Findings revealed an indirect effect of neuroticism on automatic attention, via sexual inhibition due to threat of performance failure (SIS1), for both romantic and sexually explicit stimuli. This effect was only significant for component N2, which showed increased amplitudes and earlier latencies in participants with high SIS1, as a result of high neuroticism. This suggests that neuroticism is linked to SIS1 which, in turn, impacts how sexual cues are attentively perceived. The neuroelectric signal shows that the highest the SIS1 the more salient and prioritised are the sexual cues.Clinical Translation: Findings suggest that sexual stimuli, due to their emotional valence and arousal potential, could be perceived as virtually threatening by individuals with neuroticism, and trigger maladaptive strategies, such as a stress response. These results provide a better understanding of the relationship between personality and sexual cognition and could help fine-tune clinical interventions for those who experience sexual difficulties. Strengths and Limitations: This was one of the first studies to analyse the neuroelectric activity associated with automatic attention towards sexual stimuli, in relation to personality and sexual excitation/inhibition propensity. Nevertheless, the limited number of participants and the constraints posed by the laboratory apparatus demand caution in the generalization of the results. Conclusion: Our findings suggest that automatic attentional mechanisms can hold a close relationship to personality and sexual-related domains, and open new avenues of research in relation to other automatic cognitive phenomena related to human sexual behaviour.

Single‐use technology has become important in biopharma processes since many years. Despite all the benefits, the generally rising concerns about single‐use material are hitting industrial bioproduction. The subgroup “Sustainability” of the DECHEMA workgroup “Single‐Use Technologies” aims to investigate any potential to quantify sustainability and identify points of concern or contradiction when applying single‐use material. This essay summarizes some facts about its utilization, past and current efforts to define, measure and increase sustainability and recommendations for potential actions.

In the present study, a tailor-made plug-flow reactor with 3D-printed parts and a multi-position monitoring of the pH-value, conductivity and ORP at the inlet, center and outlet part is introduced and applied in anaerobic digestion in order to investigate whether i) the formation of gradients can be detected, ii) ideal single or multiple spots for the location of sensors during an acidification process can be identified, and iii) the spatial gradient acquisition allows for an indirect monitoring of process performance measures, e.g. the accumulation of short-chain carboxylic acids. During the acidification of a full digestion and in dark fermentation with maize and grass silage, the multi-position monitoring of the liquid phase revealed that the local monitoring of conductivity at the inlet and center, the ORP at the center and outlet and the pH-value at the outlet are relevant to gain information of the process performance, while the spatial gradient monitoring of the conductivity between the inlet and center and of the ORP between the center and outlet are relevant for the early detection of process disturbances.

Volcanic eruptions are, generally, characterized by several recordable signals that can occur before, during and/or after the eruption. Such signals may reflect temporal changes in the seismic structure that can be associated with alterations in the seismic activity, fluid migration or outgassing, useful to track the volcano evolution through its eruptive phases.Cumbre Vieja ridge, in La Palma, is the most active volcanic field in the Canaries. The last eruption occurred at the Tajogaite cone, lasting from 19 September to 13 December 2021. It is considered one of the best-monitored volcanic crises in the Canary Islands, thus allowing us to study the eruption from different scientific perspectives.Ambient seismic noise interferometry has been widely applied to monitor temporal velocity changes, especially at volcanoes before the eruption. However, the causes of these velocity changes are not always fully understood. In this study we use a dataset of three years (2020 to 2022) recorded in two stations operating in La Palma to identify and characterize different physical processes before and after the eruption. For this purpose, we computed phase auto- and cross-correlations and stacked them through the time-frequency phase-weighted stack to create hourly cross-correlation functions.Seismic velocity changes cause phase shifts in the auto- and cross-correlation functions waveforms. The phase shifts can be measured through the waveform similarity, which consists in comparing each correlation function with a reference correlation function trace, in a defined window. The reference trace corresponds to a calm period, in this case, the period before the eruption. We also compared the waveform similarity results with the ground deformation inferred from GPS.Tajogaite eruption provides an opportunity to study the behaviour within the volcanic structure prior to the eruption and its recovery after the eruption and to improve our knowledge of the magmatic fluid migration. Antibiotic treatments have detrimental effects on the microbiome and lead to antibiotic resistance. To develop a phage therapy against a diverse range of clinically relevant Escherichia coli, we screened a library of 162 wild-type (WT) phages, identifying eight phages with broad coverage of E. coli, complementary binding to bacterial surface receptors, and the capability to stably carry inserted cargo. Selected phages were engineered with tail fibers and CRISPR–Cas machinery to specifically target E. coli. We show that engineered phages target bacteria in biofilms, reduce the emergence of phage-tolerant E. coli and out-compete their ancestral WT phages in coculture experiments. A combination of the four most complementary bacteriophages, called SNIPR001, is well tolerated in both mouse models and minipigs and reduces E. coli load in the mouse gut better than its constituent components separately. SNIPR001 is in clinical development to selectively kill E. coli, which may cause fatal infections in hematological cancer patients.

Objective: So far, no original studies explored non-randomized, standardized protocols for COVID-19 associated olfactory dysfunction. The main objective was to determine the efficacy of a new protocol for post-COVID olfactopathy while assessing the benefit of adding adjuvant therapies to olfactory training. Methods: Patients suffering from long-lasting post-COVID-19 olfactory dysfunction were evaluated. A non-randomized protocol based on individual nasal endoscopy findings and patient’s preferences was applied. Patients were assigned for olfactory training alone or olfactory training + adjuvant therapy. Participants performed olfactory objective and subjective evaluations at first consultation and 3 months after treatment, and results were compared. Results: A total of 47 patients were enrolled. All groups showed significant improvement in olfactory thresholds at 3-month follow-up suggesting protocol effectiveness (olfactory training group alone showed a mean threshold difference of 2.9, P Conclusions: This is one of the first studies to demonstrate results in the treatment of post-COVID-19 persistent olfactory impairment. A customized approach based on endoscopy findings and patient’s preferences may be a valid option for the management of persistent post-COVID-19 olfactory disorder. Adjuvant therapy could be considered in addition to olfactory training, but further studies are needed in order to confirm their effectiveness in this setting. There is growing interest on the topic of Sexual Violence (SV) perpetrated by community samples; movements, as the Me Too, have triggered such focus. Researching the validity of core SV measures is now fundamental. Accordingly, this study aimed to assess the structure of the Portuguese version of the Sexually Aggressive Behaviors Scale (SABS-PT) while testing for measurement invariance across gender. The SABS-PT was tested among a sample of 2540 Portuguese college students (48.5% males and 51.5% females). All participants identified as heterosexual, and their ages ranged between 18 and 39 years old. To assess the construct validity and test for measurement invariance across gender, single and multigroup Confirmatory Factor Analyses were performed. Results support the internal consistency and convergent/discriminant validity of the SABS-PT in relation to external variables. Overall, the findings suggest a good fit of data to the model. The partial scalar invariance of the measurement was obtained and further analyses on latent means differences indicated that men scored higher on SV compared to women. The SABS-PT may constitute a useful instrument for screening sexual initiation by aggressive means and associated risk factors and may play an important role as an outcome measure in programs preventing sexual violence.

Objetivo: Analisar os diagnósticos, as intervenções e atividades de enfermagem em pacientes submetidos à hemodiálise secundária à COVID-19. Método: Estudo descritivo, retrospectivo e de natureza quantitativa. A população do estudo foi representada pelos prontuários de pacientes submetidos à hemodiálise secundária à COVID-19, totalizando cerca de 64 registros. Consultaram-se os dados do instrumento de coleta de dados, bem como dados sociodemográficos, clínicos e indicadores dos diagnósticos de enfermagem. Para análise, utilizou-se da estatística descritiva e inferencial. Resultados: Os principais diagnósticos de enfermagem encontrados foram: risco de infecção, risco de volume de líquidos desequilibrado, déficit no autocuidado para banho/higiene íntima e troca de gases prejudicada. As intervenções e atividades assinaladas foram correspondentes aos diagnósticos traçados. Conclusão: O estudo possibilitou identificar os principais diagnósticos, as intervenções e atividades de enfermagem em pacientes acometidos pela COVID-19 que desenvolveram lesão renal aguda.

The immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment constitutes a significant hurdle to immune checkpoint inhibitor responses. Both soluble factors and specialized immune cells, such as regulatory T cells (Treg), are key components of active intratumoral immunosuppression. Inducible costimulatory receptor (ICOS) can be highly expressed in the tumor microenvironment, especially on immunosuppressive Treg, suggesting that it represents a relevant target for preferential depletion of these cells. Here, we performed immune profiling of samples from tumor-bearing mice and patients with cancer to demonstrate differential expression of ICOS in immune T-cell subsets in different tissues. ICOS expression was higher on intratumoral Treg than on effector CD8 T cells. In addition, by immunizing an Icos knockout transgenic mouse line expressing antibodies with human variable domains, we selected a fully human IgG1 antibody called KY1044 that bound ICOS from different species. We showed that KY1044 induced sustained depletion of ICOShigh T cells but was also associated with increased secretion of proinflammatory cytokines from ICOSlow effector T cells (Teff). In syngeneic mouse tumor models, KY1044 depleted ICOShigh Treg and increased the intratumoral TEff:Treg ratio, resulting in increased secretion of IFNγ and TNFα by TEff cells. KY1044 demonstrated monotherapy antitumor efficacy and improved anti–PD-L1 efficacy. In summary, we demonstrated that using KY1044, one can exploit the differential expression of ICOS on T-cell subtypes to improve the intratumoral immune contexture and restore an antitumor immune response.

Transfer RNA fragments (tRFs) have gene silencing effects similarly to miRNAs, can be sorted into extracellular vesicles (EVs) and are emerging as potential circulating biomarkers for cancer diagnosis. We aimed at analyzing the expression of tRFs in gastric cancer (GC) and understanding their potential as biomarkers. We explored miRNA datasets from gastric tumors and normal adjacent tissues (NAT) from TCGA repository, and proprietary 3D-cultured GC cell lines and corresponding EVs, in order to identify differentially represented tRFs using MINTmap and R/Bioconductor packages. Selected tRFs were validated in patient-derived EVs. We found 613 Differentially Expressed (DE)-tRFs in the TCGA dataset, of which 19 were concomitantly upregulated in TCGA gastric tumors and present in 3D-cells and EVs, but barely expressed in NAT. Moreover, 20 tRFs were expressed in 3D-cells and EVs and downregulated in TCGA gastric tumors. Of these 39 DE-tRFs, 9 tRFs were also detected in patient-derived EVs. Interestingly, the targets of these 9 tRFs affect neutrophil activation and degranulation, cadherin binding, focal adhesion and cell-substrate junction, highlighting these pathways as major targets of EV-mediated crosstalk with the tumor microenvironment. Furthermore, as they are present in four distinct GC datasets and can be detected even in low quality patient-EV derived samples, they hold promise as GC biomarkers. By repurposing already available NGS data, we could identify and cross-validate a set of tRFs holding potential as GC diagnosis biomarkers.

Background Multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs) are a reality that can alter the paradigm of treatment and prevention of infection in patients with liver cirrhosis (LC). Objective Identify risk factors for the occurrence of MDROs in patients with LC. Patients and methods Prospective study from October 2017 to March 2018 in consecutively hospitalized patients with decompensated LC with infection. Blood, urine and ascitic fluid cultures were analyzed. A p-value ≤0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results MDROs isolated in 18 of 52 episodes of infection. MDROs were associated with the use of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) (p = 0.0312), antibiotic therapy in the last 90 days (p = 0.0033) and discharge within preceding 30 days or current hospitalization above 48 h (p = 0.0082). There was higher 90-day mortality in patients with MDROs infection (71.4% versus 35.7%, p = 0.0316). Conclusion MDROs infections were prevalent in this cohort and associated with 90-day mortality. Use of PPIs and antibiotics increased the risk of MDROs infections, suggesting that its prescription should be restricted to formal indication. Hospitalization was associated with the onset of MDROs, so LC patients should stay at the hospital the least possible. It is relevant to investigate other factors predisposing to the emergence of these microorganisms, in order to prevent it.

Recent findings suggest that the current COVID-19 pandemic has a potential negative impact in several areas of life, including sexual health. However, less is known about the psychological dimensions that may work as vulnerability/protective factors for the development of sexual problems in the current pandemic. The current study used a longitudinal design to examine the role played by personality trait factors (neuroticism, extraversion) as well as psychosexual factors (sexual beliefs) in predicting sexual functioning and sexual distress across time during the current pandemic crisis. A total of 528 individuals (337 women) completed a web survey assessing sexual health indicators and psychological factors. The first wave was conducted during the confinement period in Portugal (N = 528) between May and June 2020 and the second four months later (N = 146), when strict confinement rules were over. Generalized estimating equations (GEE) were used to examine the ability of psychological factors to predict sexual functioning and distress across time, while controlling for age and gender. Results indicated that sexual distress at time point 2 was lower than during confinement, and men had lower levels of sexual functioning post-confinement while no significant difference was observed for women. Moreover, higher levels of neuroticism and age-related beliefs significantly predicted lower sexual functioning as well as higher sexual distress, whereas lower levels of extraversion predicted lower sexual functioning after controlling for age and gender effects. Findings support the role of psychological vulnerability factors to predict sexual problems across time and may have important implications in the prevention and treatment of sexual dysfunctions.

Chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV) negatively impact cancer patients' quality of life and treatment outcomes. This study evaluated the achievement of complete response to CINV prophylaxis during the first five days after chemotherapy in adult outpatient cancer clinics with solid malignant tumours receiving Moderate or Highly Emetogenic Chemotherapy (MEC or HEC) in Portugal. During the study, patients completed three evaluations, and nausea severity and CINV impact on patients' daily life was assessed. A complete response (no emetic episodes, no use of rescue antiemetic medication, and no more than mild nausea) was observed in 72% of the cycles (N = 161) throughout the five days after chemotherapy. Amongst the patient population, 25% classified their CINV episodes as severe. Though more than half of the patients achieved a complete response, suggesting that a therapeutic effort is being made to minimise this side effect, the overall scenario is barely optimistic. Significantly, new CINV-control measures in MEC/HEC patients should be adopted, specifically avoiding the single use of dexamethasone and 5-HT3 and raising awareness of using NK1-RAs. Thus, it is critical to improve CINV prophylactic treatment and implement practical international antiemetic guidelines in Portuguese clinical practice, envisaging the improvement of supportive care for cancer patients. info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion

ObjectivesAnxiety and depression are relevant comorbidities in asthma, but, in Portugal and Spain, data on this topic are scarce. We assessed, in patients with asthma, the frequency of anxiety and depression using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) and the European Quality of Life Five Dimension Questionnaire (EQ-5D); the level of agreement between these questionnaires, and the factors associated with these symptoms.MethodsThis is a secondary analysis of the INSPIRERS studies. A total of 614 adolescents and adults with persistent asthma (32.6±16.9 years, 64.7% female) were recruited from 30 primary care centres and 32 allergy, pulmonology and paediatric clinics. Demographic and clinical characteristics, HADS and EQ-5D were collected. A score ≥8 on Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale-Anxiety/Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale-Depression or a positive answer to EQ-5D item 5 indicated the presence of these symptoms. Agreement was determined by Cohen’s kappa. Two multivariable logistic regressions were built.ResultsAccording to HADS, 36% of the participants had symptoms of anxiety and 12% of depression. According to EQ-5D, 36% of the participants had anxiety/depression. The agreement between questionnaires in identifying anxiety/depression was moderate (k=0.55, 95% CI 0.48 to 0.62). Late asthma diagnosis, comorbidities and female gender were predictors of anxiety/depression, while better asthma control, health-related quality of life and perception of health were associated with lower odds for anxiety/depression.ConclusionAt least 1/3 of the patients with persistent asthma experience symptoms of anxiety/depression, showing the relevance of screening these disorders in patients with asthma. EQ-5D and HADS questionnaires showed a moderate agreement in the identification of anxiety/depression symptoms. The identified associated factors need to be further investigated in long-term studies.

Shrimp farming in South‐East Asian and Latin American coastal regions generates economic benefits for the producer countries and contributes to a healthy nutrition of consumers. However, shrimp farming uses great amounts of fish meal and fish oil in the feed for the provision of essential proteins and polyunsaturated fatty acids during growth. This practice contributes to the environmental burden of the production process, as it is estimated that 25% of the total wild capture fish is used to produce these compounds. Also, intensive brackish water farming in coastal regions promotes the shrinkage of mangrove forests and the contamination of surrounding soil and water resources, causing further environmental degradation. In this work, several concepts for wastewater and sludge treatment in brackish water aquaculture are reviewed, and a novel concept that combines aquaculture with the production of macroalgae and microalgae is proposed to achieve a circular system. Macroalgae can assimilate nitrogen and phosphorus in the wastewater stream, which enables the recirculation of the salty water. Solid residues are converted via anaerobic digestion into several short‐chain carboxylic acids and methane. While methane can be used for electric energy and heat provision, the acids can be consumed by heterotrophic microalgae. Both macroalgae and microalgae can be applied as feed additives in shrimp aquaculture, providing proteins and polyunsaturated fatty acid sources. This integrated concept can enable the production of shrimp without the addition of fish meal and oil, enhance nutrient recycling in brackish aquaculture, and minimize the contamination of coastal land and water.

INTRODUÇÃO: Síndrome de Burnout (SB) representa o esgotamento físico e mental intenso, na condição de uma tensão emocional crônica causada por se lidar excessivamente com pessoas, causando impactos em distintos domínios da vida. OBJETIVOS: Identificar os fatores associados à SB, bem como sumarizar a sua prevalência em discentes de escolas medicas brasileiras. MÉTODOS: A partir de buscas sistemáticas em cinco bases de dados, Google Acadêmico e em listas de referências, foi realizada uma revisão sistemática, a fim de identificar estudos originais que avaliaram fatores associados e prevalências da SB em discentes de escolas médicas brasileiras. Em um segundo momento, foi conduzida metanálise para sumarização das prevalências. RESULTADOS: A partir dos dados de 13 artigos originais, conduzidos em oito estados brasileiros, identificou-se que as variáveis “falha nos exames”, “não ter percepção de aquisição de habilidades” e o “desconforto em relação às atividades do curso” estão associadas como risco à SB. A metanálise apresentou a prevalência de SB acumulada de 17% (IC95% = 0,12; 0,23; n = 3.613; I2 = 95%). CONCLUSÃO: Considerando a abrangência das consequências relacionadas à SB, assim como o fato que questões inerentes ao curso de medicina podem desencadear a SB, é importante que as diretrizes de formação médica também sobre a estrutura dos cursos, abrangendo pontos como a ampliação de espaços de lazer e oferta de serviços de apoio psicológico aos discentes ao longo da formação inicial.

Background Falls in older adults are considered a major public health problem. Declines in cognitive and physical functions, as measured by parameters including reaction time, mobility, and dual-task performance, have been reported to be important risk factors for falls. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of two multimodal programs on reaction time, mobility, and dual-task performance in community-dwelling older adults at risk of falling. Methods In this randomized controlled trial, fifty-one participants (75.4 ± 5.6 years) were allocated into two experimental groups (EGs) (with sessions 3 times per week for 24 weeks), and a control group: EG1 was enrolled in a psychomotor intervention program, EG2 was enrolled in a combined exercise program (psychomotor intervention program + whole-body vibration program), and the control group maintained their usual daily activities. The participants were assessed at baseline, after the intervention, and after a 12-week no-intervention follow-up period. Results The comparisons revealed significant improvements in mobility and dual-task performance after the intervention in EG1, while there were improvements in reaction time, mobility, and dual-task performance in EG2 (p ≤ 0.05). The size of the interventions’ clinical effect was medium in EG1 and ranged from medium to large in EG2. The comparisons also showed a reduction in the fall rate in both EGs (EG1: -44.2%; EG2: − 63.0%, p ≤ 0.05) from baseline to post-intervention. The interventions’ effects on reaction time, mobility, and dual-task performance were no longer evident after the 12-week no-intervention follow-up period. Conclusions The results suggest that multimodal psychomotor programs were well tolerated by community-dwelling older adults and were effective for fall prevention, as well as for the prevention of cognitive and physical functional decline, particularly if the programs are combined with whole-body vibration exercise. The discontinuation of these programs could lead to the fast reversal of the positive outcomes achieved. Trial registration ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT03446352. In search of a more sustainable society, humanity has been looking to reduce the environmental impacts caused by its various activities. The energy sector corresponds to one of the most impactful activities since most energies produced come from fossil fuels, such as oil and coal, which are finite resources. Moreover, their inherent processes to convert energy into electricity emit various pollutants, which are responsible for global warming, eutrophication, and acidification of soil and marine environments. Biofuels are one of the alternatives to fossil fuels, and the raw material used for their production includes vegetable oils, wood and agricultural waste, municipal waste, and waste cooking oils (WCOs). The conventional route for WCO valorization is the production of biodiesel, which, as all recovery technologies, presents advantages and disadvantages that must be explored from a technical and economic perspective. Despite its successful use in the production of biodiesel, it should be noticed that there are other approaches to use WCO. Among them, thermochemical technologies can be applied to produce alternative fuels through cracking or hydrocracking, pyrolysis, and gasification processes. For each technology, the best conditions were identified, and finally, projects and companies that work with this type of technology and use WCO were identified.

Context The present summary of the European Association of Urology (EAU) guidelines is based on the latest guidelines on male sexual health published in March 2021, with a last comprehensive update in January 2021. Objective To present a summary of the 2021 version of the EAU guidelines on sexual and reproductive health. Evidence acquisition A literature review was performed up to January 2021. The guidelines were updated, and a strength rating for each recommendation was included based on either a systematic review of the evidence or a consensus opinion from the expert panel. Evidence synthesis Late-onset hypogonadism is a clinical condition in the ageing male combining low levels of circulating testosterone and specific symptoms associated with impaired hormone production and/or action. A comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic work-up, along with screening recommendations and contraindications, is provided. Erectile dysfunction (ED) is the persistent inability to attain and maintain an erection sufficient to permit satisfactory sexual performance. Along with a detailed basic and advanced diagnostic approach, a novel decision-making algorithm for treating ED in order to better tailor therapy to individual patients is provided. The EAU guidelines have adopted the definition of premature ejaculation (PE), which has been developed by the International Society for Sexual Medicine. After the subtype of PE has been defined, patient’s expectations should be discussed thoroughly and pharmacotherapy must be considered as the first-line treatment for patients with lifelong PE, whereas treating the underlying cause must be the initial goal for patients with acquired PE. Haemospermia is defined as the appearance of blood in the ejaculate. Several reasons of haemospermia have been acknowledged; the primary goal over the management work-up is to exclude malignant conditions and treat any other underlying cause. Conclusions The 2021 guidelines on sexual and reproductive health summarise the most recent findings, and advise in terms of diagnosis and treatment of male hypogonadism and sexual dysfunction for their use in clinical practice. These guidelines reflect the multidisciplinary nature of their management. Patient summary Updated European Association of Urology guidelines on sexual and reproductive health are presented, addressing the diagnosis and treatment of the most prevalent conditions in men. Patients must be fully informed of all relevant diagnostic and therapeutic options and, together with their treating physicians, decide on optimal personalised management strategies.

Technological advances have highly facilitated the accession of health-related information. As the public search on hospital websites for information and services is increasing, hospitals need to upgrade their websites to meet the high standards and demands of health-care consumers. Today, many hospital websites use a patient-centric approach to promote engagement and encourage interaction for better health-related decision making. However, little is known about the current state of hospital websites in Portugal. This study aims to assess hospital websites in Portugal and offer improvement insights. In this paper, the websites of 132 selected hospitals were thoroughly examined and assessed according to a predefined list of indicators and sub indicators, based on four criteria: technology, content, services and community interaction, defined in the Health Sector Website Assessment Index (HSWAI) instrument. Most of the websites scored satisfactorily in the technology criterion, performed fairly well in providing fundamental content, but showed shortcomings in quality metrics data and online patient services, and most of them fell short in community interaction elements. Overall, the results show that each hospital website must be improved in specific features in order to become effective and efficient. Several of the identified assessment elements (indicators/sub indicators) fall under Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3, United Nations health-focused goal, and could be used by governments to assess their progress toward achieving that specific goal. Therefore, this study not only provides a comprehensive and systematic approach that quantitatively measures hospital websites' overall performance, but also contributes to practical applications in terms of worthwhile recommendations for a website that meets patient's demands and hospital's operational needs.

Transfer RNA fragments (tRFs) have gene silencing effects similarly to miRNAs, can be sorted into extracellular vesicles (EVs) and are emerging as potential circulating biomarkers for cancer diagnoses. We aimed at analyzing the expression of tRFs in gastric cancer (GC) and understanding their potential as biomarkers. We explored miRNA datasets from gastric tumors and normal adjacent tissues (NATs) from TCGA repository, as well as proprietary 3D-cultured GC cell lines and corresponding EVs, in order to identify differentially represented tRFs using MINTmap and R/Bioconductor packages. Selected tRFs were validated in patient-derived EVs. We found 613 Differentially Expressed (DE)-tRFs in the TCGA dataset, of which 19 were concomitantly upregulated in TCGA gastric tumors and present in 3D cells and EVs, but barely expressed in NATs. Moreover, 20 tRFs were expressed in 3D cells and EVs and downregulated in TCGA gastric tumors. Of these 39 DE-tRFs, 9 tRFs were also detected in patient-derived EVs. Interestingly, the targets of these 9 tRFs affect neutrophil activation and degranulation, cadherin binding, focal adhesion and the cell–substrate junction, highlighting these pathways as major targets of EV-mediated crosstalk with the tumor microenvironment. Furthermore, as they are present in four distinct GC datasets and can be detected even in low quality patient-derived EV samples, they hold promise as GC biomarkers. By repurposing already available NGS data, we could identify and cross-validate a set of tRFs holding potential as GC diagnosis biomarkers.

KRAS-targeted inhibition yielded promising, yet far from ideal, clinical responses, revealing that cancer cells easily bypass KRAS loss. Therefore, we aim to understand how mutant KRAS cancer cells tolerate so well the loss of a key oncogene to which they were addicted to. KRAS expression was silenced through siRNAs in colorectal cancer (CRC) cell lines that carry KRAS mutations. The proteome characterization was obtained by mass spectrometry and the expression of significantly altered proteins was validated by western blotting. Chromatin states were investigated using electron microscopy. Upon KRAS inhibition, there was a significant reduction in the cell number, accompanied by changes in cell cycle, thus supporting KRAS-dependency. Proteomics analysis revealed that KRAS inhibition-tolerant cells upregulated several proteins associated with the extracellular exosome or nuclear compartments. Molecular function and biological process gene ontology terms revealed an up-regulation of proteins mainly associated with binding activities (RNA, protein, nucleosome, and core promoter binding) as well as gene expression regulation, mRNA splicing and processing, and nucleosome assembly and repositioning. In addition, the proteomics data also revealed an upregulation of proteins associated with active chromatin states. Moreover, KRAS-silenced persister cells also presented alterations in some histone post-translational modifications and in chromatin packing, both suggesting that transcription is impacted. Overall, our results suggest an epigenetic mechanism underlying tolerance to KRAS inhibition that involves chromatin structural changes and transcription alterations, which we are currently pursuing. While previous research has argued that neuroticism is a vulnerability factor for the experience of sexual difficulties, the basic cognitive processes associated with the impact of such a personality trait on the processing of sexually explicit stimuli are less understood. The current study examined the influence of neuroticism on the attentional processes and its neurophysiological correlates during the perception of sexual and non-sexual images. Event-related potentials from 30 women and 28 men were recorded during a modified oddball paradigm in which participants of both sexes visualized stimuli from three different categories (sexual, non-sexual positive, and non-sexual negative), and two arousal levels (high and low arousal). A P1 latency effect was found for female participants, in which high neuroticism was associated with longer latencies for pornographic compared to romantic sexual images. Higher levels of neuroticism were also associated with higher P3 amplitudes for highly arousing images, with both sexual and non-sexual content. Results were interpreted in light of the information processing model of sexual arousal and showed that neuroticism seems to impact both automatic and conscious pathways of processing of sexual stimuli.

The prevalence of hypertension in the pediatric age range is estimated at 1–5% worldwide, with higher rates in adolescence. Although primary hypertension is more common, due to the increasing prevalence of obesity and metabolic syndrome among adolescents, secondary hypertension should be always considered and excluded. We present the case of an adolescent with secondary hypertension and a challenging diagnosis associated with coarctation of aorta and Turner Mosaicism.

This study investigates the psychometric properties of the Sexually Aggressive Behaviors Scale (SABS) in a sample of 1,632 heterosexual Portuguese female college students, aged between 18 and 39 years old ( M = 22.40; SD = 4.31). The internal structure of the scale was investigated, along with analyses of the internal consistency, and validity evidence in relation to external variables. Participants completed an online survey that was disseminated using Portuguese universities’ mailing lists and social networks. Results supported a single factor solution consisting of 10 items. Evidence was gathered in favor of the internal consistency and convergent/discriminant validity in relation to other variables, such as rape myths, psychopathic traits, and perception of intimacy. This study adds to the evidence of the SABS being an appropriate evaluation tool with female college students, allowing the rigorous assessment of sexual violence as committed by community women against a reluctant male partner.

Genetic alterations influence the malignant potential of cancer cells, and so does the tumor microenvironment. Herein, we combined the study of KRAS oncogenic effects in colorectal cancer cells with the influence of fibroblast-derived factors. Results revealed that mutant KRAS regulates cell fate through both autonomous and nonautonomous signaling mechanisms. Specifically, processes such as proliferation and cell-cell aggregation were autonomously controlled by mutant KRAS independently of the stimulation with fibroblasts conditioned media. However, cancer cell invasion revealed to be a KRAS-dependent nonautonomous effect, resulting from the cooperation between fibroblast-derived HGF and mutant KRAS regulation of C-MET expression. C-MET downregulation upon KRAS silencing rendered cells less responsive to HGF and thus less invasive. Yet, in one cell line, KRAS inhibition triggered invasion upon stimulation with fibroblasts conditioned media. Inhibition of PIK3CA oncogene did not promote invasion, thus showing a KRAS-specific effect. Moreover, the invasive capacity also depended on the HGF-C-MET axis. Overall, our study awards oncogenic KRAS an important role in modulating the response to fibroblast-secreted factors either by promoting or impairing invasion, and depicts the HGF-C-MET axis as a putative therapeutic target to impair the invasive properties of mutant KRAS cancer cells.

The degree to which the adult human visual cortex retains the ability to functionally adapt to damage at the level of the eye remains ill-understood. Previous studies on cortical neuroplasticity primarily focused on the consequences of foveal visual field defects (VFD), yet these findings may not generalize to peripheral defects such as occur in glaucoma. Moreover, recent findings on neuroplasticity are often based on population receptive field (pRF) mapping, but interpreting these results is complicated in the absence of appropriate control conditions. Here, we used fMRI-based neural modeling to assess putative changes in pRFs associated with glaucomatous VFD. We compared the fMRI-signals and pRF estimates in participants with glaucoma to those of controls with case-matched simulated VFD. We found that the amplitude of the fMRI-signal is reduced in glaucoma compared to control participants and correlated with disease severity. Furthermore, while coarse retinotopic structure is maintained in all participants with glaucoma, we observed local pRF shifts and enlargements in early visual areas, relative to control participants. These differences imply that the adult brain retains local neuroplasticity. This finding has translational relevance, as it is consistent with VFD masking, which prevents glaucoma patients from noticing their VFD and seeking timely treatment.

Diffusion MRI (dMRI) provides unique insights into the neural tissue milieu by probing interactions between diffusing molecules and tissue microstructure. Most dMRI techniques focus on white matter (WM) tissues, nevertheless, interest in gray matter characterizations is growing. The Soma and Neurite Density MRI (SANDI) methodology harnesses a model incorporating water diffusion in spherical objects (assumed to be associated with cell bodies) and in impermeable “sticks” (assumed to represent neurites), which potentially enables the characterization of cellular and neurite densities. Recognising the importance of rodents in animal models of development, aging, plasticity, and disease, we here employ SANDI for in-vivo preclinical imaging and provide a first validation of the methodology by comparing SANDI metrics with cellular density reflected by the Allen mouse brain atlas. SANDI was implemented on a 9.4T scanner equipped with a cryogenic coil, and in-vivo experiments were carried out on N = 6 mice. Pixelwise, ROI-based, and atlas comparisons were performed, magnitude vs. real-valued analyses were compared, and shorter acquisitions with reduced the number of b-value shells were investigated. Our findings reveal good reproducibility of the SANDI parameters, including the sphere and stick fractions, as well as sphere size (CoV < 7%, 12% and 3%, respectively). Additionally, we find a very good rank correlation between SANDI-driven sphere fraction and Allen mouse brain atlas contrast that represents cellular density. We conclude that SANDI is a viable preclinical MRI technique that can greatly contribute to research on brain tissue microstructure.

We present a seismic ambient noise tomography of the Cape Verde archipelago, located in the Atlantic Ocean, approximately 600 km west of Senegal. We used 38 seismic broad-band stations that continuously recorded for 10 months, in order to construct the first 3-D model of Sv-wave velocities for the crust and uppermost mantle beneath the Cape Verde region. We started by computing phase cross-correlations for vertical component recordings using all possible inter-island station pairs. Next, a time–frequency phase-weighted stack was applied to obtain robust Rayleigh-wave group-velocity dispersion curves in the period band between 10 and 24 s. Group-velocity maps at different periods are obtained by inverting the dispersion curves. We then inverted the group-velocity maps to obtain the 3-D shear wave velocity structure of the crust and uppermost mantle beneath Cape Verde. The final 3-D model extends from 8 km down to 23 km and has a lateral resolution of about 50 km. The crust in the southwestern sector, encompassing Fogo, presents lower S-wave velocities that may be caused by the presence of melt pockets and/or hydrothermal fluids circulation. The uppermost mantle beneath the northwestern sector is characterized by higher S-wave velocities in agreement with previous results obtained from Ps and Sp receiver functions. Those high-velocity anomalies can reflect non-altered crust or remnants of magma chambers or solidified basaltic intrusions, which fed the volcanism in these islands. Frailty is a complex condition that emerges from dysregulation in multiple physiological systems. Increasing evidence suggests the potential role of age-related energy dysregulation as a key driver of frailty. Exercise is considered the most efficacious intervention to prevent and even ameliorate frailty as it up-tunes and improves the function of several related systems. However, the mechanisms and molecules responsible for these intersystem benefits are not fully understood. The skeletal muscle is considered a secretory organ with endocrine functions that can produce and secrete exercise-related molecules such as myokines. These molecules are cytokines and other peptides released by muscle fibers in response to acute and/or chronic exercise. The available evidence supports that several myokines can elicit autocrine, paracrine, or endocrine effects, partly mediating inter-organ crosstalk and also having a critical role in improving cardiovascular, metabolic, immune, and neurological health. This review describes the current evidence about the potential link between energy metabolism dysregulation and frailty and provides a theoretical framework for the potential role of myokines (via exercise) in counteracting frailty. It also summarizes the physiological role of selected myokines and their response to different acute and chronic exercise protocols in older adults.

Understanding the dynamics of stability/plasticity balances during adulthood and how they are sculpted by sensory experience is pivotal for learning, disease, and recovery from injury. Although invasive recordings suggest that sensory experience promotes single-cell and population-level plasticity in adults, the brain-wide topography of sensory remapping remains unknown. Here, we investigated topographic remapping in the adult rodent visual pathway using functional MRI (fMRI) coupled with a first-of-its-kind setup for delivering patterned visual stimuli in the scanner. Using this novel setup, and coupled with biologically-inspired computational models, we were able to noninvasively map brain-wide properties (receptive fields (RFs) and spatial frequency (SF) tuning curves) that were insofar only available from invasive electrophysiology or optical imaging. We then tracked the RF dynamics in the chronic Visual Deprivation Model (VDM), and found that light exposure progressively promoted a large-scale topographic remapping in adults. Upon light exposure, the initially unspecialized visual pathway progressively evidenced sharpened RFs (smaller and more spatially selective) and enhanced bandpass filters in SF tuning curves. Our findings reveal that visual experience following VDM reshapes the structure and function of the visual system and shifts the stability/plasticity balance in adults.
