Low mass stars ($\leq 1$ M$_{\odot}$) are some of the best candidates for hosting planets with detectable life because of these stars' long lifetimes and relative planet to star mass and radius ratios. An important aspect of these stars to consider is the amount of ultraviolet (UV) and X-ray radiation incident on planets in the habitable zones due to the ability of UV and X-ray radiation to alter the chemistry and evolution of planetary atmospheres. In this work, we build on the results of the HAZMAT I (Shkolnik & Barman 2014) and HAZMAT III (Schneider & Shkolnik 2018) M star studies to determine the intrinsic UV and X-ray flux evolution with age for M stars using Gaia parallactic distances. We then compare these results to the intrinsic fluxes of K stars adapted from HAZMAT V (Richey-Yowell et al. 2019). We find that although the intrinsic M star UV flux is 10 to 100 times lower than that of K stars, the UV fluxes in their respective habitable zone are similar. However, the habitable zone X-ray flux evolutions are slightly more distinguishable with a factor of 3 -- 15 times larger X-ray flux for late-M stars than for K stars. These results suggest that there may not be a K dwarf advantage compared to M stars in the UV, but one may still exist in the X-ray., 16 pages, 14 figures

Stellar variability is a limiting factor for planet detection and characterization, particularly around active M-type stars. Here we revisit one of the most active stars from the Kepler mission, the M4 star GJ 1243, and use a sample of 414 flare events from 11 months of 1-minute cadence light curves to study the empirical morphology of white-light stellar flares. We use a Gaussian process detrending technique to account for the underlying starspots. We present an improved analytic, continuous flare template that is generated by stacking the flares onto a scaled time and amplitude and uses a Markov Chain Monte Carlo analysis to fit the model. Our model is defined using classical flare events, but can also be used to model complex, multi-peaked flare events. We demonstrate the utility of our model using TESS data at the 10-minute, 2-minute and 20-second cadence modes. Efforts to discover and characterize habitable zone planets have primarily focused on Sun-like stars and M dwarfs. Yet the intermediate K stars provide an appealing compromise between these two extremes that has been relatively unexplored. Compared to solar-type stars, K stars are more abundant, maintain longer main-sequence lifetimes, and their planets are more suitable to observations based on the mass and radius ratios of the planet to star. While M stars also excel in these regards, they have been observed to have frequent flares with ultraviolet (UV) energies over 100 times greater than anything observed in the recent history of our Sun. Therefore, K stars may provide "super-habitable" environments for exoplanets that are more easily detectable and characterizable. Understanding the UV radiation incident on planets is pivotal in determining the habitability of any planets orbiting these stars, as well as our ability to observe any potential biosignatures in their atmospheres. With this aim, we observed a sample of K stars in the near-UV and far-UV at three representative ages using the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) to spectroscopically analyze the UV evolution of K stars. Here, we present the first results of this HST program. Context. Planetary population analysis gives us insight into formation and evolution processes. For short-period planets, the sub-Jovian desert has been discussed in recent years with regard to the planet population in the mass/period and radius/period parameter space without taking stellar parameters into account. The Next Generation Transit Survey (NGTS) is optimised for detecting planets in this regime, which allows for further analysis of the sub-Jovian desert. Aims. With high-precision photometric surveys (e.g. with NGTS and TESS), which aim to detect short period planets especially around M/K-type host stars, stellar parameters need to be accounted for when empirical data are compared to model predictions. Presenting a newly discovered planet at the boundary of the sub-Jovian desert, we analyse its bulk properties and use it to show the properties of exoplanets that border the sub-Jovian desert. Methods. Using NGTS light curve and spectroscopic follow-up observations, we confirm the planetary nature of planet NGTS-5b and determine its mass. Using exoplanet archives, we set the planet in context with other discoveries. Results. NGTS-5b is a short-period planet with an orbital period of 3.3569866 +/- 0.0000026 days. With a mass of 0.229 +/- 0.037 M-Jup and a radius of 1.136 +/- 0.023 R-Jup, it is highly inflated. Its mass places it at the upper boundary of the sub-Jovian desert. Because the host is a K2 dwarf, we need to account for the stellar parameters when NGTS-5b is analysed with regard to planet populations. Conclusions. With red-sensitive surveys (e.g. with NGTS and TESS), we expect many more planets around late-type stars to be detected. An empirical analysis of the sub-Jovian desert should therefore take stellar parameters into account.

We present the detection of an energetic flare on the pre-main sequence M3 star NGTS J121939.5-355557, which we estimate as only 2 Myr old. The flare had an energy of $3.2\pm^{0.4}_{0.3}\times 10^{36}$erg and a fractional amplitude of $7.2\pm0.8$, making it one of the most energetic flares seen on an M star. The star is also X-ray active, in the saturated regime with $log L_{X}/L_{Bol} = -3.1$. In the flare peak we have identified multi-mode quasi-periodic pulsations formed of two statistically significant periods of approximately 320 and 660 seconds. This flare is one of the largest amplitude events to exhibit such pulsations. The shorter period mode is observed to start after a short-lived spike in flux lasting around 30 seconds, which would not have been resolved in Kepler or TESS short cadence modes. Our data shows how the high cadence of NGTS can be used to apply solar techniques to stellar flares and identify potential causes of the observed oscillations. Stellar flares are explosive phenomena caused by reconnection events in the magnetic fields of stars. They emit across a wide range of wavelengths but notably in the optical, UV and in X-rays. They are some of the highest energy events seen from other stars and they regularly dwarf those seen from the Sun. They are regularly seen on low mass stars and provide a way of studying the magnetic activity of these systems. Their role in exoplanet habitability (in particular for low mass stars) has become increasingly relevant in recent years, necessitating studies of their energies and occurrence rates. \ud \ud In this thesis I present observations and analysis of stellar flares detected with the Next Generation Transit Survey (NGTS). These flares come from stars ranging from G to L spectral type. I also present the detection and analysis of the transiting brown dwarf NGTS-7Ab, discovered in part because of the multiple flares detected from the M dwarf host star. \ud \ud These flare detections include the first ground-based CCD detections of superflares from a G-type star, NGTS J030834.9-211322. I used the high cadence NGTS observations to apply a Solar inspired empirical flare model, one which does not require arbitrary break points between the flare rise and decay. \ud \ud I also present the detection of a giant flare from a pre-main sequence M star. This flare was one of the most energetic detected from an M star and displayed quasi-periodic pulsations in the flare peak. I apply solar techniques to analyse these oscillations and identify their cause. \ud \ud I present the first detection of a white-light flare from an L2.5 dwarf. This is the coolest star to ever show a white-light flare to date and shows strong tranxiii sient magnetic activity can persist to the brown dwarf boundary. I also show how full frame images in wide-field exoplanet surveys, provided they are a high enough cadence, can be used to detect flares from the faintest and coolest stars. \ud \ud I present the detection of NGTS-7Ab, an ultra-short period brown dwarf around a tidally locked and active M star. I analyse the entire system, showing through a kinematic and photometric analysis that it is likely a hierarchical triple system formed of two active M stars (NGTS-7A and NGTS-7B) and a transiting brown dwarf (NGTS-7Ab). This is the shortest period transiting brown dwarf discovered to date and it has spun up and tidally locked its host star, placing the system in a state of spin-orbit synchronisation. \ud \ud Finally, I discuss the detection of white-light flares from pre-main sequence stars associated with the Orion complex. These stars have an average age of 4 Myr. I measure the average flare occurrence rate for M0-M3 stars, finding a non-linear relationship between flare occurrence rate and cluster age. \ud \ud My work shows how the ground-based NGTS observations can rival those available from space for high energy white-light flare events. Throughout this work I also discuss the possible effects flares may have on nearby exoplanets, along with how the detected flare events relate to other signs of magnetic activity such as starspots.

We report the discovery of NGTS-4b, a sub-Neptune-sized planet transiting a 13th magnitude K-dwarf in a 1.34 d orbit. NGTS-4b has a mass M = 20.6 ± 3.0 M⊕ and radius R = 3.18 ± 0.26 R⊕, which places it well within the so-called ‘Neptunian Desert’. The mean density of the planet (3.45 ± 0.95 g cm−3) is consistent with a composition of 100 per cent H2O or a rocky core with a volatile envelope. NGTS-4b is likely to suffer significant mass loss due to relatively strong EUV/X-ray irradiation. Its survival in the Neptunian desert may be due to an unusually high-core mass, or it may have avoided the most intense X-ray irradiation by migrating after the initial activity of its host star had subsided. With a transit depth of 0.13 ± 0.02 per cent, NGTS-4b represents the shallowest transiting system ever discovered from the ground, and is the smallest planet discovered in a wide-field ground-based photometric survey.
