Background: The nature of asymmetric fission of preactinides is not yet understood in detail, despite intense experimental and theoretical studies carried out at present. Purpose: The study of asymmetric and symmetric fission of Hg180,182,183 and Pt178 nuclei as a function of their excitation energy and isospin. Methods: Mass-energy distributions of fission fragments of Hg180, Pt178 (two protons less than Hg180), and Hg182 (two neutrons more than Hg180) formed in the Ar36+Sm144, Nd142, and Ca40+Nd142 reactions were measured at energies near and above the Coulomb barrier. Fission of Hg183 obtained in the reaction of Ca40 with Nd143 was also investigated to see if one extra neutron could lead to dramatic changes in the fission process due to the shape-staggering effect in radii, known in Hg183. The measurements were performed with the double-arm time-of-flight spectrometer CORSET. Results: The observed peculiarities in the fission fragment mass-energy distributions for all studied nuclei may be explained by the presence of a symmetric fission mode and three asymmetric fission modes, manifested by the different total kinetic energies and fragment mass splits. The yield of symmetric mode grows with increasing excitation energy of compound nucleus. Conclusions: The investigated properties of asymmetric fission of Hg180,182,183 and Pt178 nuclei point out the existence of well-deformed proton shell at Z≈36 and a less deformed proton shell at Z ≈ 46.

Background: Observation of asymmetric fission of Hg180 has led to intensive theoretical and experimental studies of fission of neutron-deficient nuclei in the lead region. Purpose: The study of asymmetric and symmetric fission modes of Hg180,190 and Pb184,192,202 nuclei. Methods: Mass-energy distributions of fission fragments of Hg180,190 and Pb184 formed in the Ar36+Sm144,154 and Ca40+Sm144 reactions, respectively, at energies near the Coulomb barrier have been measured using the double-arm time-of-flight spectrometer CORSET and compared with previously measured Pb192,202 isotopes produced in the Ca48+Sm144,154 reactions. The mass distributions for Hg180,190 and Pb184,192,202 together with old data for Ir187, Au195, Hg198, Tl201, Bi205,207, Po210, and At213 [J. Nucl. Phys. 53, 1225 (1991)] have been decomposed into symmetric and asymmetric fission modes. The total kinetic-energy distributions for different fission fragment mass regions have been analyzed for Hg180,190 and Pb184. Results: The stabilization role of proton numbers at Z≈36, 38, Z≈45, 46, and Z=28/50 in asymmetric fission of excited preactinide nuclei has been observed. The high (≈145-MeV) and the low (≈128-MeV) energy components have been found in the total kinetic-energy distributions of Hg180,190 fission fragments corresponding to the fragments with proton numbers near Z≈46 and Z≈36, respectively. In the case of fission of Pb184 only the low-energy component (≈135MeV) for the fragments with masses corresponding to the proton numbers Z≈36 and 46 has been found. Conclusions: The studied properties of asymmetric fission of Hg180,190 and Pb184,192,202 nuclei point out the existence of well deformed proton shell at Z≈36 and less deformed proton shell at Z≈46.

The competition between the formation of the compound nucleus and the quasifission depends strongly on the reaction entrance channel. Purpose: The investigation of fission and quasifission processes in the formation of Z=120 superheavy composite systems in the 52,54Cr+248Cm and 68Zn+232Th reactions, and their comparison with the 64Ni+238U reaction at energies in the vicinity of the Coulomb barrier. Methods: Mass-energy distributions of fissionlike fragments formed in the reactions 52,54Cr+248Cm and 68Zn+232Th at energies near the Coulomb barrier were measured using the double-arm time-of-flight spectrometer CORSET. Results: Capture cross sections for the reactions under investigation were measured. The most probable fragment masses and total kinetic energies as well as their variances in dependence on the interaction energy were studied for asymmetric and symmetric fragments. The fusion probabilities were estimated from the analysis of mass-energy distributions. Conclusions: The estimated fusion probability drops down by a factor of 103 in the 54Cr+248Cm reaction compared to the reactions of 48Ca ions with actinides. Among the studied reactions, the 54Cr+248Cm is the most favorable one for the production of the superheavy element with Z=120.

Background: Low-energy multinucleon transfer reactions may be used for production of new neutron-enriched heavy nuclei. Purpose: Our aim is to investigate the influence of proton (Z=82) and neutron (N=82, 126) shells as well as orientation effects on the formation of reaction products in the inverse quasifission process in the reactions 156,160Gd + 186W. Methods: Mass, energy, and angular distributions of primary binary fragments formed in the reactions 156Gd+186W at an energy of 878 MeV, and 160Gd+186W at 860 and 935 MeV, have been measured using the double-arm time-of-flight spectrometer CORSET at the U400 cyclotron of the Flerov Laboratory of Nuclear Reactions (FLNR) at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR), Dubna. Results: Enhancement in the yield of products with masses 200–215 u has been found for both reactions. The cross sections of the formation of trans-target fragments with masses around 208 u are found to be about 10μb at the Coulomb barrier energy and reach the level of 0.5 mb at the energy above the barrier for side-to-side collision. Conclusions: The enhanced yield of products with masses heavier than the target mass confirms the important role of the closed shells at Z=82 and N=82, 126 in the inverse quasifission process in low-energy damped collisions. The orientation effect caused by the strong deformation of colliding nuclei can result in a gain in the yield of heavy target-like fragments.

Background: In heavy-ion-induced reactions the mechanism leading to the formation of the compound nucleus and the role of quasifission is still not clear. Purpose: Investigation of the quasifission process of superheavy composite systems with Z = 110-116 and comparison with properties of fusion-fission and quasifission of lighter composite systems. Method: Mass and energy distributions of fissionlike fragments formed in the reactions 48Ca +232 Th, 238U, 244Pu, and 248Cm at energies near the Coulomb barrier have been measured using the double-arm time-of-flight spectrometer CORSET at the U-400 cyclotron of the FLNR JINR. Results: The most probable fragment masses as well as total kinetic energies and their dispersions in dependence on the interaction energies and ion-target combinations have been studied for asymmetric and symmetric fragments formed in the reactions. The capture cross sections were obtained for the reactions 48Ca +244 Pu and 248Cm. The lower limits for fission barriers of 283−286Cn, 289−292Fl, and 293−296Lv compound nuclei were estimated. Conclusions: Analysis of the properties of symmetric fragments has shown that a significant part of these fragments may be attributed to fusion-fission process for the reactions 48Ca+238U, 244Pu, and 248Cm. peerReviewed

Mass-energy and angular distributions of fission fragments for the $^{48}$Ca+$^{144,154}$Sm \to $^{192,202}$Pb, $^{40}$Ca+$^{154}$Sm \to $^{194}$Pb reactions have been measured. Fusion suppression and the presence of quasifission at energies near and below the Coulomb barrier have been observed for the reactions with the deformed target $^{154}$Sm. In the case of the spherical $^{144}$Sm target no evidence of quasifission has been found. Quasifission cross sections have been extracted from total fission-like events by analysis of their mass and angular distributions.

We have studied the mass and energy distributions of fission fragments from the two reactions 12C+204Pb and 48Ca+168Er that lead to the same compound nucleus 216Ra*. Despite the fact that the excitation energy was around 40 MeV in both cases, the contribution from asymmetric fission in the first reaction is only around 1.5% but is about 30% in the second. This marked increase in the yield of asymmetric products is connected to the quasifission process, in which important shell effects become evident. The mass-energy distributions are interpreted in terms of an independent decay mode competing with the normal fusion-fission process and possibly leading to a significant suppression of the fusion cross section itself.

The capture-fission cross-sections in an energy range of 206-242 MeV of 48Ca-projectiles and mass-energy distributions (MEDs) of reaction products in an energy range of 211-242 MeV have been measured in the 48Ca+208Pb reaction using the double-arm time-of-flight spectrometer CORSET. The MEDs of fragments for heated fission were shown to consist of two components. One component, which is due to classical fusion-fission, is associated with the symmetric fission of the 256No compound nucleus. The other component, which appears as ''shoulders'', is associated with the quasi-fission process and can be named ''quasi-fission shoulders''. Those quasi-fission shoulders enclose light fragments whose masses are 60-90 a.m.u. The total kinetic energy (TKE) of the fragments that belong to the shoulders is higher than the value expected for a classical fusion-fission process. We have come to the conclusion that in quasi-fission, spherical shells with Z=28 and N=50 play a great role. It has also been demonstrated that the properties of the MEDs of fragments formally agree with a well-known hypothesis of two independent fission modes; in this case the modes are normal fusion-fission and quasi-fission processes. A high-energetic Super-Short mode of classical fission has been found at low excitation energies in the mass range of heavy fragments M = 130-135 and TKE = 233 MeV; however the yield associated with this mode is small., Comment: 33 pages, 24 eps figures, RevTeX4, submitted to Phys. This article aims at demonstrating that the study of statistical distributions in information sciences provides the tools to apprehend and define concepts related with information use and production. One will briefly outline what should be infometrics laws, then one will define what is in our sense duality and statistic information field. Simple mathematical milestones will be given. The study relies on data gathered in libraries, in a document supplier, on Web site visits. These data allow to formalize and modelize processes of information use and production . Thus, these data lead to define the concept of infometric field of use and production, with help of mathematics.

A study is performed of the asymmetric fission of neutron-deficient mercury 180, 190Hg isotopes obtained in the reactions of 36Ar + 144, 154Sm and 68Zn + 112Sn at incident energies near and above the Coulomb barrier. The relative contributions from asymmetric and symmetric fission change along with the excitation energy of the fissile compound nucleus. The effect the characteristics of the entrance channel have on the dynamics of the reaction is studied.

International audience; The mass, energy and angular distributions of binary fragments formed in the reactions $^{64}$Ni + $^{238}$U, $^{58}$Fe + $^{244}$Pu, $^{52}$Cr + $^{248}$Cm, $^{54}$Cr + $^{248}$Cm at energies near the Coulomb barrier have been measured. The analysis of energy distributions of the symmetric fragments with mass numbers ${{{{A}_{{{\text{CN}}}}}} \mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {{{{A}_{{{\text{CN}}}}}} 2}} \right. \kern-0em} 2} \pm 20$ formed in these reactions have been applied to separate compound nucleus fission and quasi-fission. The estimated fusion probability for the reactions Cr, Fe, and Ni ions with actinide targets shows an exponential dependence on the mean fissility parameter of the system and shows also that reaction with Cr ions is more favorable for production of the super heavy element with Z = 120.

The pathway toward the production of superheavy elements (SHE) crosses with the one of an in-depth study of the fission and quasifission processes. Quasifission affects the probability of forming a compound nucleus (CN) after capture and fission plays a decisive role during the cooling of the CN. To search for optimal reactions to produce SHE in fusion reactions and to provide an estimate of their production cross section measurements of the capture and fusion cross sections along with the survival probabilities are a mandatory task. Here an overview of the impact of fission and quasifission over the synthesis of SHE is discussed along with the need to perform measurements over a wide range of masses and energies.

The mass-energy distributions and cross sections of proton-induced fission of Th-232 have been measured at the proton energies of 7, 10, 13, 20, 40, and 55 MeV. Experiments were carried out at the proton beam of the K-130 cyclotron of the JYFL Accelerator Laboratory of the University of Jyvakyla and U-150m cyclotron of the Institute of Nuclear Physics, Ministry of Energy of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The yields of fission fragments in the mass range A = 60- 170 a.m.u. have been measured up to the level of 10(-4)%. The three humped shape of the mass distribution up has been observed at higher proton energies. The contribution of the symmetric component grows up with increasing proton incident energy; although even at 55 MeV of proton energy the shoulders in the mass energy distribution clearly indicate the asymmetric fission peaks. Evolution of shell structure was observed in the fission fragment mass distributions even at high excitation energy.

The scope of this review is to summarize the main advancements in the search of signatures of the compound nucleus fission and quasifission processes in heavy and superheavy systems. The understanding of fusion and fission in heavy and superheavy elements is needed for tracing paths aimed at reaching the island of stability situated near Z = 114-122 and N = 184. With increasing charge of the interacting nuclei other processes, like quasifission, emerge and compete against fusion. Hence also their study must be pursued. After a brief look at the experimental techniques, the behavior of several observables is extracted from the most recent data to aid in the disentanglement of the various competing processes which hinder the production of superheavy elements. Mass and energy distributions of fission fragments obtained in the reactions 22Ne + 249Cf, 26Mg + 248Cm, and 22Ne + 238U have been measured. A special attention will be paid on the properties of mass-energy distribution of fission fragments obtained in the reaction 26Mg + 248Cm at an excitation energy of 35 MeV. At this energy shell effects should become more effective in fission, the TKE distribution of symmetric fragments obtained in the reaction 26Mg + 248Cm differs strongly from a Gaussian shape. Besides a low-energy component, a high-energy component, not foreseen in the LDM, arises. This is attributed to the fact that both fission fragments are close to the spherical neutron shell N 82. It means that for the compound nucleus 274Hs*, formed in the reaction 26Mg + 248Cm, the phenomenon of bimodal fission was observed for the first time. For the compound nucleus 260No* formed in the reaction 22Ne + 238U at the initial excitation energy of 41 MeV the bimodal fission as well as superasymmetric fission were observed. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd., SCOPUS: cp.j, info:eu-repo/semantics/published
