Attending to the health needs of students with chronic conditions requires a fluid exchange of information and coordination between parents, educators, administrators, and school healthcare professionals. Previous research often omits school nurses in this exchange, although their role is key to successful outcomes. Relational Coordination (RC) theory posits that cohesive relationships help support communication, enabling stakeholders to coordinate their work. This article preliminarily explores whether RC domains might be relevant in school health settings, utilizing existing qualitative data. Responses from focus group sessions were analyzed using a deductive and inductive analytic approach. Data were coded using the 7 RC domains as a priori codes. Frequent, timely, and accurate communication emerged as major themes in the communication domain. Shared knowledge was a major theme within the relationship domain. Problem-solving communication, shared goals, and mutual respect were minor themes. The results suggest that improving interprofessional collaboration (IPC) and health outcomes in children with chronic conditions using RC theory-informed interventions will be important to deepen the understanding of how these different domains interact and influence student health outcomes.

Structured morning rounds have been used to improve communication, provide learning opportunities, and support patient care in various healthcare settings. The leadership team in an inner-city Inpatient Mental Health Unit identified a gap in the structure of morning rounds; to remedy this, a standardized reporting tool and structured morning rounding process were implemented. This short communication reports on an evaluation of staff...s perceptions on the outcomes of using a standardized reporting tool and structured rounding process to improve efficiency and communication regarding patient care among an interprofessional team. Feedback was provided on logistics, attendance, supporting factors that ensured ease of use for the new structure, and benefits of the program. While this evaluation focuses on the opinions of nurses, it serves as an example for leadership in various healthcare units on the benefits of a structured rounding program, and key factors that contribute to making the process successful. This short communication also provides an example for an efficient communication tool that can be adapted to meet the needs of various groups of healthcare disciplines.

In urban areas, numerous barriers exist for children and families to access needed behavioral health care. Compounding the general deficit of behavioral health workers in the United States is lack of access to culturally responsive care. Additional challenges include inherent racism and oppression in our health and human service systems and siloed approaches to behavioral health care training and practice. Integrated care is an emerging field nationally, yet training and education in integrated care is limited. This article provides an overview of the Child/Adolescent Interprofessional Practice and Education (CAIPE) program, a novel training approach in its first year of implementation for behavioral health students that prioritizes trauma-informed and social-justice oriented practice, integrated care, and interprofessional teamwork.This study employs a mixed-methods approach to program evaluation. Data sources include program application materials (demographics and data related to clinical interests, student goals, and preparedness for interprofessional work). Data is also drawn from measures of student outcomes (self-efficacy navigating complex care patients, empathy, and complex care knowledge).Baseline data are reported for demographics, students' goals and interprofessional interests, and student outcomes. Information is also presented relevant to trainings conducted in the grant's first year and planned for subsequent years. Preliminary data and implementation suggest that the program has drawn diverse trainees who are committed to interprofessional, integrated care for underserved youth.Recruitment and program development challenges are discussed, along with grant goals' fit with students' interests and plans for future evaluation. This paper focuses on gaps as the relations of evaluations against the professions with same occupation with those by two professions with different occupations and those against them between nurses, care and welfare professions as terminal care. For example, interprofessional communications（environment where it is easy to communication and information sharing with each expertise）, support based on wills of users and family care givers, one to put user’s need first and necessity of medical knowledge are analyzed. The results are as follows. The gaps that professions with same occupation approach more enough than those with another ones with different occupation as interprofessional communications and putting need of user exist first exist between nurses and care professions. On one hand, the same kind of gaps as guessing user’s will are between nurses and care professions, care and welfare professions. In addition, the same kind of gaps as eliciting desires from family exist between care and welfare professions. Further more, the ratio of opinion that they are not sure to what extent professions with different occupation support users and family care givers exist among nurses and care professions. As necessity of upgrading medical knowledge, more professions with different occupations agree strongly against care and welfare professions than nurses.

Treating those with mental illness frequently requires collaboration among health care providers from different disciplines as well as easy access to care. Neither interprofessional collaboration (IPC) nor accessible care can be assumed to automatically occur or be available in the busy health care environment. Early and deliberate exposure of graduate students in health care disciplines to interprofessional educational activities is imperative to strengthen IPC. Empirical evidence supports the linkage between interprofessional education (IPE) early-on in training and IPC. Additionally, early and focused training of graduate students in health care disciplines to telebehavioral health (TBH) can help promote care access. The current literature supports TBH as an effective treatment approach that enhances access to care. Thus, the creation of educational activities for graduate students in health care disciplines that use early exposure and training in both: IPE and TBH approaches to enhance IPC can position future providers to provide quality patient care, especially given the COVID-19 pandemic implications on health care and education. This article describes the authors' experience in implementing and evaluating an interprofessional, simulation-based educational activity in psychopharmacology using a TBH approach in graduate nursing and psychology students. This quality improvement process used the plan-do-study-act cycle of continuous quality improvement to establish the initial implementation and the 11 steps of the International Nursing Association for Clinical Simulation and Learning standards of best practice to then refine this educational activity. Objectives: To explore student perceptions of learning and interprofessional aspects of obstetric and neonatal emergencies through online simulation-based workshops. Methods: This qualitative study was conducted at Monash University, Australia. Data were obtained from six separate online Obstetric Neonatal Emergency Simulation workshops held between May 2020 and August 2021. A total of 385 students attended and were invited to participate in the study by completing an online survey two-three weeks later. Of the attendees, 144 students completed the survey (95 medical, 45 midwifery), equating to a response rate of 37%. Survey responses were downloaded from online survey platform and separated into medical and midwifery responses. Thematic analysis of data was performed using a coding framework, resulting in development of themes and subthemes. Results: Main themes were adaptability, connectivism, preparedness for practice, experiential learning, learning through modelling and dynamics of online interaction. Students reported that online workshop was a useful alternative method to experience simulation-based learning, increase their readiness for clinical practice and foster positive interprofessional relationships. Consistent with existing literature evaluating similar in-person programs, midwifery students were most interested in interprofessional interaction (predominant theme: dynamics of online interaction), whilst medical students were more concerned with developing clinical skills (predominant themes: learning through modelling, experiential learning). Conclusions: Online learning may be a useful and convenient way of delivering interprofessional simulation-based education during the pandemic, in remote areas and as an adjunct to in-person teaching. Future studies should evaluate the impact of online learning with a mixed methods study and in comparison, to in-person programs.

The purpose of this article is to describe the development, implementation, and evaluation of a Simulation Interprofessional Education (Sim-IPE) activity for healthcare students from different disciplines (athletic training [AT] and nursing). The objective for the Sim-IPE activity was to engage AT and prelicensure nursing students in a realistic healthcare scenario to enhance knowledge about one another's profession, develop interprofessional skills, collaborate with one another, and communicate effectively as a team as they performed care.This mixed methods study employed a one-time posttest design for a convenience sample of AT and prelicensure nursing students following a simulation intervention. Students completed the Student Perceptions of Interprofessional Clinical Education-Revised (SPICE-R) survey and answered open-ended response questions.Thirteen students (N = 13) from Cohort 1 and 12 students (N = 12) from Cohort 2 completed the SPICE-R survey. Most students strongly agreed/agreed for each of the SPICE-R survey questions. Qualitative findings indicated the students positively perceived the Sim-IPE activity as it helped them discover the value of interprofessional patient care.The quantitative findings indicated that the students found the Sim-IPE an effective learning methodology to achieve the objectives while the qualitative findings gave further insight into the students' perceptions of interprofessional teamwork and the value of the prebrief session conducted before the simulation. The findings will inform future Sim-IPE activities involving additional groups of healthcare students.

Providing high-quality clinical services to patients with neurodevelopmental disabilities (NDDs) requires interprofessional collaboration. This article highlights the importance of collaboration between psychology and developmental-behavioral pediatrics (DBP) to promote diagnosis, treatment recommendations, and integrated care for patients and their families. Interprofessional collaboration requires health care providers to work together toward solutions, including diagnosis, treatment recommendations, and ongoing care coordination. Case examples are presented to capture collaborative practice between psychology and DBP. Several established programs for providing interprofessional collaboration are highlighted, with noted benefits and barriers to collaborative care for NDD patients.

Oncology palliative care (PC) services seek to improve quality of life in patients with cancer. PC providers face significant systemic obstacles, stemming from insufficient collaboration between healthcare providers. This study explores these obstacles and strategies to help facilitate successful collaboration amongst healthcare providers at a systemic level.A multicenter qualitative study was conducted via interviews and focus groups. Fifty employees in Italian-speaking Switzerland were interviewed, along with ten relatives of oncology patients. Framework analysis was used to identify and categorize the most prominent themes.Three main themes were identified: knowledge of and connection to other healthcare approaches; beliefs, attitudes and behavior regarding collaboration; and values, attitudes and beliefs towards life, end-of-life and optimal care approaches for oncology patients.Strategies that promote interprofessional collaboration and oncology PC services should foster a cultural shift towards perceiving these services as a medical specialty, thereby contributing to quality patient care.An overview of potential limitations is provided, in addition to a timeline of interprofessional collaboration which would help to optimize oncology PC services.

Although occupational health and safety programs are expected to prepare graduates to function in an interprofessional collaborative environment, research to support training in this area is far less common in this discipline than among clinical programs. We incorporated interprofessional education (IPE) competencies into an occupational health and safety course for graduate students in diverse disciplines (public health, engineering, nursing) and evaluated effectiveness.We assessed course offerings for content learning and attitudes toward IPE and analyzed data using a mixed-methods approach.In general, students increased their understanding of the role of other disciplines, confidence in working in interprofessional teams, and valuation of IPE.Introducing IPE competencies into graduate education in worker health and safety is feasible and can equip students to more effectively work in occupational health-oriented multidisciplinary teams.

Interprofessional Education (IPE) provides a framework for collaborative education between health care specialties to improve patient care. In 2010, the Interprofessional Education Collaborative Expert Panel established the competencies of communication, ethics, roles and responsibilities, and teams and teamwork. Studies have assessed knowledge and attitudes about IPE in several allied health educational programs including respiratory therapy (RT).We compared RT faculty to athletic training (AT), nutrition (NT), occupational therapy (OT), physical therapy (PT), and dental hygiene (DH) faculty. Faculty were asked to rank the IPE competencies according to importance.RT faculty ranked communication first, then teams and teamwork, roles and responsibilities, and last ethics. A Kruskal-Wallis Dwass-Steel-Chritchlow-Fligner pairwise analysis showed statically significant differences among allied health faculty rankings of IPE competencies. In communication, RT faculty responded statistically higher than AT (RT faculty who teach at different degree levels (associate's degree programs vs bachelor's and master's degree programs) had the same ranking of competencies, but they had a statistically significant difference for teamwork, with associate's degree faculty ranking teamwork lower than bachelor's and master's degree faculty.

Interprofessional collaborative practice is a key requirement for the successful implementation of integrated healthcare models. Current interprofessional education opportunities seldom include medical laboratory technologists who oversee the production of data that informs the diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of patients. Errors in the laboratory process mostly occur in the pre-analytical and post-analytical phases, which both involve the need for collaboration between medical laboratory technologists and other healthcare providers. In this article, we introduce and describe an innovative work-integrated virtual learning experience that provides technologists with the opportunity to fully participate in interprofessional education.

INTRODUCTION: Team-based Interprofessional Practice Placements (TIPPs) are innovative training practices. Evidence to substantiate the design of TIPPs is limited. This study explores the design and evaluation of TIPPs to support undergraduate students in gaining a better understanding of the complexity of patient problems in primary care settings and of collaboration within interprofessional teams.METHOD: We implemented TIPPs at a University of Applied Sciences, Belgium based on three principles: (1) authentic tasks with real clients, (2) students collaborated in small interprofessional teams, and (3) students were supported by teachers. TIPPs were evaluated using focus groups (N = 5) that explored teachers' (N = 13) and students' (N = 22) experiences. Data were analysed thematically.RESULTS: Three themes were constructed. First, TIPPs enhance students' understanding of the complexity of clients' problems and what matters to the client. Second, TIPPs support students to value the expertise of interprofessional team members. Finally, to enhance students' learning, TIPPs must strike an appropriate balance between teacher support and student autonomy.CONCLUSION: The three design principles used to underpin the TIPPs were viable. Although students reported to receive sufficient support, they also felt this support should have been gradually withdrawn to offer more opportunities for autonomous learning. Teachers reported difficulties in balancing their support.

This study's objective was to determine if student participation in a co-curricular drug information journal would increase interprofessional education (IPE) competency as measured by a validated survey tool.To encourage interprofessional collaboration, students from diverse professional backgrounds were split into groups to conduct a literature review, draft an article on a topic of their choice, obtain revisions through formal review, and publish their article in a student-led journal, The ARxCH (The Annual Review of Changes in Healthcare). To measure IPE competency, students completed the validated Interprofessional Collaborative Competencies Attainment Survey (ICCAS) at the beginning and end of the study to measure changes in IPE competency scores.Results of the ICCAS survey found that 15 of the 17 IPE competency questions showed significant positive changes from the pre-survey to the post-survey. These findings suggest that The ARxCH publishing process increased IPE competencies when incorporating students from a variety of healthcare backgrounds and leveraging this novel IPE approach of formal manuscript preparation and group discussion.This student-led journal could serve as a prototype for future longitudinal activities designed to enhance student IPE competence through co-curricular activities.

The current article provides an overview of an interprofessional service-learning course that became virtual in the setting of the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic. Telehealth video technologies were used to build an intergenerational, virtual classroom and increase engagement of older adults with interdisciplinary health professional students. The virtual classroom involved group health education sessions, individualized Medicare wellness visits, and a clinical huddle. The course addressed the public health need for reliable health information during the early days of the pandemic, social connection, and meeting the educational goals for health care students and older adults in a novel virtual setting. Lessons learned for the interdisciplinary team and for engaging older adults included the need for preparation reading, team building exercises, training videos, and telehealth competency checklists. Beyond the pandemic, adoption of virtual methods enables hybrid approaches to interprofessional education and builds competencies for delivery of telehealth and computer-based visits in professional practice settings. This article outlines the experiences of a Scottish healthcare chaplain. After a student nurse expressed a dated view of chaplains, I realised it was my responsibility to refresh it. After reflection I planned, developed and implemented an interprofessional education session for nursing, midwifery and allied health professional (NMAHP) students on clinical placement. I had to develop awareness of learning theories, preferences and styles, and explore different methods of delivery. Since NMAHP students can be undergraduate, postgraduate, school leavers or career changers, the session is multi-generational and interprofessional. Attendee feedback was used to review the learning session. This package was developed and shared with my team but may be of value to other healthcare chaplains or spiritual care educators to introduce spiritual care to NMAHP students on clinical placement. It will also be a useful resource for nurses, midwives and allied health professionals to expand their understanding of the role.

IntroductionResearch suggests that interprofessional education, bringing learners together to learn about, with, and from each other, improves health professions education and can improve health outcomes. Little research has measured outcomes of interprofessional education between midwifery students and obstetrics and gynecology residents. The purpose of this study was to examine self-assessed interprofessional and collaborative competencies among midwifery students and obstetrics and gynecology residents.MethodsBaseline self-assessed interprofessional and collaborative competencies were compared with follow-up measurements to evaluate learners' experiences over an 11-month study period. Participants were midwifery students and obstetrics and gynecology residents who experienced interprofessional learning activities. The Interprofessional Education Collaborative Competency Self-Assessment Survey (IPEC Survey) and Interprofessional Collaborative Competency Attainment Survey (ICCAS) were used.ResultsOf 256 learners at 4 demonstration sites, 223 (87%) completed the baseline, and 121 of 237 eligible learners (51%) completed the follow-up surveys. The IPEC Survey total score (t = 2.31, P = .02) and interaction subscale (t = 2.85, P = .005) and ICCAS score (t = 4.04, P = .001) increased for midwifery students but not obstetrics and gynecology residents on the IPEC Survey (t = 0.32, P = .75) and ICCAS (t = -0.05, P = .96) measures. Midwifery students (87%) and residents (57%) reported improved overall ability to collaborate. Learners responding to 3 open-ended questions valued team-based experiences, including learning how to communicate with each other; appreciated learning each other's education and scope of practice; and recommended skills development including uncommon clinical events, case discussions, and direct clinical care.DiscussionThis study advanced knowledge about interprofessional education between midwifery students and obstetrics and gynecology residents. Midwifery students improved in self-assessed interprofessional and collaborative competencies. Most learners reported better interprofessional collaboration skills and were positive about future interprofessional learning. This evaluation approach is available for other programs implementing or extending interprofessional education.

Virtual interprofessional education (IPE) has emerged as a promising alternative to traditional in-person IPE. However, theoretical frameworks to support virtual interprofessional learning are not well established. Two theoretical frameworks emerged as relevant to virtual IPE: (1) the Canadian Interprofessional Health Collaborative (CIHC) interprofessional learning framework and (2) Dornan's Experience-Based Learning Model (ExBL) of workplace learning. In this study, we sought to explore virtual IPE using both frameworks to develop new theoretical understandings and identify assumptions, gaps and barriers.This was a qualitative study. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with medical and nursing student participants (n = 14) and facilitators (n = 3) from virtual IPE workshops. Transcripts were analysed using directed content analysis methodology, informed by the CIHC and ExBL frameworks. Themes were explored using mind-mapping transitional coding. Data collection and analysis were continued iteratively until themes with adequate conceptual depth, relevance and plausibility were identified.Three themes were identified: (1) a shift in the balance of personal and professional, (2) blunted sociologic fidelity and (3) uncertainty and threats to interpersonal connections. Professional distinctions and hierarchies are blurred virtually. This contributed to an increased sense of psychological safety among most learners and lowered the threshold for participation. Separation from workplace sociologic complexity facilitated communication and role clarification objectives. However, loss of immersion may limit deeper engagement. Interprofessional objectives that rely on deeper sociological fidelity, such as conflict resolution, may be threatened. Informal interactions between learners are hindered, which may threaten organic development of interprofessional relationships.Role clarification and communication objectives are preserved in virtual IPE. Educators should pay close attention to psychological safety and sociologic fidelity-both to leverage advantages and guard against threats to connection and transferability. Virtual IPE may be well suited as a primer to in-person activities or as scaffolding towards interprofessional workplace practice.

Can an interprofessionally designed and facilitated learning event change the way professionals understand each other's roles, enable them to better work with each other and improve patient care? Pharmacy and dental professionals are contractors to the NHS, providing services to the public. The way both professions are funded encourages them to generally work in isolation from the wider NHS, in contrast to other areas of healthcare and NHS systems. This study explores how working collaboratively at all stages of design, development, facilitation and engagement of a learning event impacts on the professionals taking part. It also explores how learning interprofessionally can change the way dental and pharmacy professionals work together, suggesting this way of learning is beneficial to improving working relationships between the sectors.The study explored the ways that shared learning between professions could be approached and encouraged. Pharmacy professionals expressed that they felt more informed and confident giving dental advice to patients. Dental professionals recognised that pharmacy professionals could help support and manage patients. All professionals could see the importance of multidisciplinary working to improve understanding of the other professionals' role. The workshops showed that shared learning is an important aspect to help engage and integrate healthcare systems.

Health care has shifted to focus less on individual practitioners and more on providing interprofessional and collaborative patient care. A strong working relationship among pharmacists and physicians is imperative for patient care and safety.The objective of this research was to examine physician perspectives of the relationship between physicians and pharmacists, specifically evaluating the qualities and actions necessary for pharmacists to establish trust to provide the best quality of patient care.Semistructured qualitative key informant interviews were conducted with 11 physicians. Questions were designed to gather information about the physicians' experiences with pharmacists and perceived barriers and opportunities for building trust and collaboration. The Unified Theory of Trust and Collaboration was used as a theoretical framework.The ability to cooperate was the most important aspect identified by all 11 physicians in creating effective collaboration along with respect, knowledge, communication, and trust. Common barriers identified with the pharmacist-physician relationship were the lack of identity, rapport, knowledge, positive attitude, and communication.Building trust and narrowing the gaps of communication are crucial in achieving effective collaborative practice among health professionals. Pharmacists and physicians must have the capability to cooperate with one another, understand the common moral responsibility they share, recognize the implications of their personal behavior on their professional relationships, and focus on their scope of practice without crossing boundaries. Through positive behaviors of civility, communication, adaption, and mutual respect in their individual roles, pharmacists and physicians can enhance their relationship and practice collaboratively.

Aim: The aim of this study was to design, deliver and evaluate an interprofessional education programme for healthcare professionals on how to implement a modified version of the safe recovery programme to prevent falls in hospitalized patients. Design: Mixed methods design incorporating pre- and post education surveys and individual semi-structured interviews. Methods: Thirty-four health professional participants attended a 1-h face-to-face or Zoom® interprofessional education session to learn how to deliver an evidence-based patient falls prevention education strategy, the modified Safe Recovery Programme. Results: A 1-hour education session was insufficient to build full confidence to deliver the Safe Recovery Programme. There was no statistically significant change in participant views on interprofessional collaboration. Participants recommended prior consultation and preparation before delivery of IPE, with additional opportunities for discussion and feedback during implementation with patients. The findings highlight the importance of interprofessional education for evidence-based interventions in hospitals. Health professionals value education that is timely, interactive, realistic and engaging.

Physician assistants (PAs) and medical degree students (MDs) often lack training in addressing the social determinants of health (SDOH). Social work students (SWs), meanwhile, have extensive SDOH training; however, few medical professionals have opportunities to engage in interprofessional training with SWs. This study examined the feasibility, acceptability, and students' perceptions of an interprofessional virtual reality (VR) simulated learning environment (SLE) for teaching health professions students about the SDOH.In January 2020, 15 students at Boston University School of Medicine attended web-based video conferences focused on SDOH, health equity, and team-based care. Subsequently, student dyads participated in a case-based learning activity using an immersive VR SLE to develop teamwork skills. Evaluation included a postsurvey and a focus group examining their experiences in the course to gauge feasibility and acceptability. Thematic analysis of open-ended survey responses from the postsurvey and focus group data was conducted.A total of 8 VR simulations were run. Findings indicated both MD and PA students learned patient engagement strategies from SW students, who enhanced their health care leadership capacity. Participants found the means of instruction acceptable, valued the hands-on VR interprofessional training, and expressed interest in learning more about the scope of one another's roles and the community resources available to patients.VR SLE is a feasible and acceptable means of instruction. It allowed students to connect across programmatic and geographic boundaries in a collaborative working environment mimicking the team approach to care they will use in their professional life. This experience illustrated for students the strengths a multidisciplinary team has to offer.

Information sharing, a component of patient and family engagement (PFE), is an important process that may contribute to intensive care unit (ICU) quality of care. Yet, virtually no studies explore how the process of information sharing unfolds in the ICU from the interprofessional team and family member perspectives. To better understand the process of information sharing, we conducted ethnographic fieldwork in a 20-bed medical ICU, focusing on behaviors and interactions of the interprofessional team and family members (May 2016 - October 2016). We completed 17.5 observation hours, 6 shadowing sessions, and 12 semi-structured interviews with 17 total participants. We used thematic content analysis and iterative inductive coding to identify three themes about the information sharing process: 1) family factors (health literacy and past experience with the ICU environment) influence information sharing; 2) clinicians strategies can support engagement in the process of information sharing (assessing families' need for information, understanding a families' hope, using rounds as an opportunity for information sharing); 3) the process of information sharing allows for trust building between families and the ICU team. Our findings suggest that information sharing is a crucial process that may serve as a catalyst for effective patient and family engagement in the ICU.

The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of Team Strategies and Tools to Enhance Performance and Patient Safety (TeamSTEPPS) on student self-perceived competencies and perceptions of interprofessional (IP) communication and teamwork in a clinical case review activity. TeamSTEPPS is an evidence-based curriculum that is used to enhance and support IP healthcare communication.A repeated-measures, pretest/posttest study evaluated physician assistant students' and student pharmacists' perceptions of TeamSTEPPS. Students completed Performance Assessment for Communication and Teamwork (PACT) surveys, evaluating teamwork, knowledge, attitudes, and skills perceptions before and after a TeamSTEPPS lecture and associated activity with peer feedback.Overall, 87.4% (n = 429) completed pre- and post-PACT surveys. Apart from the Mutual Support domain (p = .898), all changes were significantly positive (p.004), with the greatest improvements occurring in the Attitudes and Perceived Skills domains.TeamSTEPPS IP education, application, and peer feedback improved students' perceptions of multiple domains, including effective communication. Using TeamSTEPPS tools in IP formats enabled the students to safely practice and collaborate in preparation for clinical practice.

The care of older adults with complex medical conditions requires effective team-based care.Nursing and social work students need a curriculum that provides them with immersive experiences in geriatrics to prepare them for competent practice.This Geriatric Workforce Enhancement Program supported 5 advanced practice nursing (APN) and 5 master of social work (MSW) student fellows in a 2-semester program, with 3 cohorts completing the fellowship over 3 years (N = 30).By the completion of the fellowship, students had (1) demonstrated increased knowledge of age-related changes and health problems experienced by older adults, (2) developed clinical competencies in providing patient-centered health care for older adults, and (3) assessed the fellowship as helpful in preparing for interprofessional team care.An interprofessional gerontology fellowship for APN and MSW students can develop knowledge and skills in team-based care for older adults. Recommendations for creating a fellowship curriculum are provided.

The purpose of this study was to develop an interprofessional collaboration (IPC) scale for home health care for frail elderly.The first items of the IPC scale included collaboration members' attitudes, awareness, motivation, team strength, communication, relationships, information, care recipients' interests, effects, development, utilization of social resources, contributions to the community, and crisis management. The subjects were 512 care managers who work in home care support offices across Japan. They manage interprofessional collaboration in home health care for frail elderly who need care at 65 years old and above. The scale's construct validity, internal consistency, the validity of known groups, concurrent validity, and test-retest reliability (193 subjects) were examined.The final IPC scale's items consisted of four factors (37 items): the strength of interprofessional teams (16), the management of collaborative systems (7), effects of collaboration (8), and communication (6). Four factors explained 58.6% of the total explained variance. The modified model fit of the scale achieved acceptable levels. The Cronbach's α coefficient for all items was .97. The sum of communication factor in the cities/wards group was lower than those in the towns/villages group. There were differences between the sum and each factor with different levels of ease to collaborate. The intraclass correlation coefficient for all items in the first and second assessments was .875.The validity and reliability of the IPC scale have been verified. This scale can be used to assess the IPC for home health care for frail elderly.

Early referral to rheumatology of people with suspected inflammatory arthritis is associated with better outcomes. Typically, these individuals are seen by a family physician who would assess the need for rheumatology referral. However, some may first consult a physical therapist where no physician referral is required. New interprofessional referral pathways, such as direct referral from a physical therapist to a rheumatologist, could enhance early access to a rheumatologist. Our objective was to explore perceptions of clinicians and people with inflammatory arthritis regarding physical therapists referring directly to rheumatologists. We used purposive and snowball sampling to recruit participants for five focus groups: rheumatologists, family physicians, physical therapists, people with inflammatory arthritis, and a mixed group of physical therapists and people with inflammatory arthritis. Thematic analysis revealed four core themes: difficulties accessing care, reluctance of family physicians and rheumatologists toward the new pathway, interprofessional relationships (or lack thereof), and opportunities along the referral pathway. The conclusions are that care must be optimized by ensuring swift referral for those who require it; and that there is a need for knowledge translation to all actors on the advantages of this new pathway.

There are many challenges in providing trauma-informed healthcare to pediatric victims of sexual abuse and their families. We address this through collaborative interprofessional efforts within our hospital facility, located in a Midwestern adult Level 1 and pediatric trauma center. Our sexual assault nurse examiner team is composed of eight nurses and provides 24/7 coverage. The child abuse team located in our hospital includes one board-certified child abuse pediatrician, one certified pediatric nurse practitioner, and a licensed clinical social worker. The application of trauma-informed care using case scenarios involving both teams is described in this article.

This article describes the association of COVID-19 on organizational attributes in primary care among 2 academic-practice partnership interprofessional collaborative practice (IPCP) clinics. Our team used a concurrent, triangulation repeated-measures study design to examine responses to the Survey of Organizational Attitudes of Primary Care (SOAP-C) instrument between January and December 2020. Analysis revealed statistically nonsignificant change over 12 months across all 4 subscales. Study results suggest that IPCP teams can function effectively through adversity. The IPCP model seemed to bolster resilience making it a viable model for ambulatory practices caring for vulnerable populations.

Teamwork quality has been shown to influence patient safety, and simulation-based team-training (SBTT) is an effective means to increase this quality. However, long-term effects are rarely studied. This study aims to investigate the long-term effects of interprofessional SBTT in emergency medicine in terms of global confidence, self-efficacy in interprofessional communication and in emergency medicine situations. Newly graduated doctors, nurses, auxiliary nurses, and medical and nursing students participated. Four emergency medicine scenarios focused on teamwork according to the A-B-C-D-E-strategy. All participants increased their global confidence from 5.3 (CI 4.9-5.8) before to 6.8 (CI 6.4-7.2; p .0001) after SBTT. Confidence in interprofessional communication increased from 5.3 (CI 4.9-5.8) to 7.0 (CI 6.6-7.4; p .0001). Students had the greatest gain. The self-efficacy following the A-B-C-D-E strategy increased from 4.9 (CI 4.4-5.3) to 6.6 (CI 6.2-7.0). Again, students had the steepest increase. Newly graduated doctors achieved a superior increase in global confidence as compared to nurses and auxiliary nurses (p .0001). Their propensity to recommend SBTT to colleagues was 9.9 (CI 9.8-10.0). The positive effects were sustained over a six-month period, indicating that interprofessional SBTT had a positive impact on competence development, and a potential to contribute to increased team quality in emergency medicine care.

This study aims to provide insight into speech-language pathologists' experiences of and preparation for interprofessional collaborative practice across various settings and geographical locations in the United States. We disseminated an online survey via Qualtrics© to reach a representative sample of speech-language pathologists. We questioned respondents about the extend to which they engage in interprofessional collaborative practice, professionals with whom they engage in interprofessional collaborative practice, preparation for interprofessional collaborative practice, and barriers to engaging in interprofessional collaborative practice. Responses from 296 participants were analyzed to describe details regarding speech-language pathologists' experiences in interprofessional collaboration. Quantitative data included means, ranges, standard deviations, and frequency counts. Open-ended responses underwent analysis through a consensual qualitative approach. Most speech-language pathologists in this study (59%) reported feeling prepared for interprofessional collaboration. Participants reported that they engage in interprofessional collaborative practice with other professionals from disciplines such as nursing, occupational therapy, teaching, physical therapy, and school psychology. To best prepare students for future speech-language pathology practice, participants recommended that students engage in interprofessional education to learn about collaborating with these disciplines. These results could have implications for future design and implementation of interprofessional education activities for students and practicing clinicians.

To describe a large-scale, cultural sensitivity-focused interprofessional book club activity that is required in the first-professional year of an accelerated pharmacy curriculum.An interprofessional book club activity, focusing on the need for cultural sensitivity in health care, is conducted annually for students in the acupuncture, pharmacy, physical therapy, physician assistant, and sonography programs. Each year over 400 students are required to attend and are assigned to interprofessional groups to discuss guided questions pertaining to the book written by Anne Fadiman, The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down: A Hmong Child, Her American Doctors, and the Collision of Two Cultures. Pharmacy students complete multiple assignments before and after the activity. Students are administered a post-survey to collect student feedback and self-assessment data. The book club has been run in both synchronous and asynchronous formats.Student survey responses have consistently revealed that the majority of students agreed or strongly agreed that they were better prepared for culturally-diverse patient interactions, the activity allowed for interprofessional learning, and the activity should continue for future students.A book club activity is an effective strategy for delivering content related to cultural sensitivity in an interprofessional format. This activity model can be used to support interactions with multiple professions in different schools within the same university or with multiple professions located at different universities/institutions.

Interprofessional education (IPE) in Ireland is at an early stage. Currently, there is no data to reflect the amount and type of IPE occurring across the Island of Ireland. To support IPE implementation, data is needed on existing IPE which will identify gaps and foundations on which to build. We designed a cross-sectional, online, anonymous survey to map geographical IPE locations, IPE setting, and type of IPE offered. Results were analyzed by exporting raw data to Microsoft Excel. The survey was completed by 21 participants. Over half of participants (n = 12) came from two professions: physiotherapy and speech and language therapy. Participants were from 4 counties (from a potential 32): Cork, Dublin, Galway, and Limerick. There were twice as many university educator participants (n = 14) as compared to clinical educators (n = 7). Shared modules and guest lectures from other professions were frequent methods of shared learning. At university level the most frequent IPE activity was interprofessional problem-based learning/case study. At clinical sites students interact with a range of qualified professionals and have limited opportunities to work with students from other professions. This may impact the range of collaborative work skills developed and thus readiness for workforce entry.

This study aimed to explore healthcare providers' experiences of their communication and interaction with conscious patients on mechanical ventilation in intensive care. Nurses, physicians, and physiotherapists were interviewed after they had been video recorded in naturally occurring interactions with patients. The interviews were analyzed using a phenomenological-hermeneutical approach. Three themes were identified: The willingness to engage and understand the mechanically ventilated patient, the potential risk of neglecting the patient in the encounters, and provider interdependence as the core of intensive care. The themes elicited how providers handled the dissonance between their own personal ideals of care and their real-world encounters with patients and other professionals. The healthcare providers were aware of how easily patients could be neglected while being non-vocal, and therefore invested time and effort communicating with the patients. Based on their personal ideals of patient participation and autonomy, it was difficult to perform procedures, such as weaning off the ventilator or mobilization, to which the patient was opposed. Interprofessional collaboration was valued by the providers in such situations. The study revealed that providers need to consider the communication barriers that exist on the individual and team levels when interacting with patients on mechanical ventilation.

Despite the increasing emphasis on interprofessional education (IPE) in curricula and the potential benefits for student learning, there appears to be a lack of evidence directing authentic and accurate assessment of student-learning outcomes and translation of assessment data into scores and grades. Given the increasing importance of reflection and simulation in IPE, the purpose of this systematic review was to identify, appraise, and synthesize published literature using reflection and simulation as summative assessment tools to evaluate student outcomes following IPE activities. The Crowe Critical Appraisal Tool was used to appraise the included articles for quality. This systematic review yielded only five studies of marginal quality that could highlight the limited rigorous use of either reflection or simulation for summative assessment purposes. This review has identified a need for summative IPE assessment alongside formative assessments. Furthermore, training needs to be offered to both faculty assessors, to ensure they are competent and results are reproducible, and students, to equip them with the knowledge, critical thinking skills, and attitude for becoming reflective practitioners who are able to practice interprofessionally. The assessment of IPE remains a challenge, and there is a clear gap in the literature where research needs to grow.

Interprofessional education (IPE) often uses collaborative learning for better teamwork among multiple professions. Its theoretical background is social interdependence theory (SIT), and positive interdependence is key for successful collaborative learning. As there is little theoretical knowledge on how to optimize the social interdependence in IPE, educators often struggle to develop an effective program. Therefore, a more specific explanation of the relationship between social interdependence and interprofessional readiness might make IPE more effective. We aimed to elucidate how students' social interdependence in collaborative learning relates to interprofessional readiness. Health profession students (n = 259) undertaking a collaborative IPE program were asked to complete two validated questionnaires: Readiness for Interprofessional Learning Scale and Social Interdependence Scale in Collaborative Learning. A structural equation analysis provided a good fit for the data. Awareness of objectives positively predicted interprofessional collaboration and identity, whereas specific roles as health professionals negatively predicted interprofessional roles and identity. As the current healthcare system is highly specialized, there is a dilemma that the more specific a problem is, the clearer it is which profession is responsible for solving it. Hence, strengthening awareness collaboratively may overcome the dilemma. Also, it is necessary to reconstruct a curriculum based on the premise of interprofessional activities.

Educational training in professional programs forms the foundation for how a person problem-solves throughout their career. However, training focused on only one profession ignores the value realized through collaborations among multiple professions for solving health-related problems. This is at the core of inter-professional education (IPE). Effective IPE programs can result in inter-professional collaboration and translation science endeavors across the health sciences and beyond. Recent events such as the COVID-19 pandemic and the opioid crisis highlight the importance of veterinary medicine in advancing One Health through IPE. The prevalence of IPE programs in veterinary curricula, and the process by which these have been established, has not been widely described in the literature. Through an 18-question survey sent to associate deans (ADs) of 50 veterinary schools, we sought to determine the status of IPE in the veterinary curriculum. Thirty-nine schools agreed to participate, representing primarily United States Doctor of Veterinary Medicine public and private programs with some representation from Canadian, United Kingdom, and Australasian programs. Schools that provide IPE courses developed their programs in collaboration with other health sciences programs across the 4-year curriculum. The perceived barriers for IPE offerings were no different between schools with or without opportunities; however, a lack of faculty and student-perceived value and lack of adequate space in the academic schedule were common threads. Our findings provide a snapshot of the current state of IPE in veterinary medical curricula, with a particular emphasis on the United States, and point to areas of programmatic need for the field.

Background Transferring critically ill patients with COVID-19 is a challenging task; therefore, well-trained medical team is needed. This study aimed to determine the role of in situ simulation training during pandemic by using high-fidelity manikin to improve interprofessional communication, skills and teamwork in transferring critically ill patients with COVID-19. Methods This single-blinded randomised control trial included 40 subjects allocated into standard low-fidelity simulator (LFS) and high-fidelity simulator (HFS) groups. Subjects, who were not members of multiprofessional team taking care of patients with COVID-19, in each group were assigned into small groups and joined an online interactive lecture session, two sessions of in-situ simulation and a debriefing session with strict health protocols. The first simulation aimed to teach participants the skills and steps needed. The second simulation aimed to assess transfer skills, communication and teamwork performance, that participants had learnt using a validated, comprehensive assessment tool. Data were analysed using unpaired t test or Mann-Whitney test. Results The HFS group showed significantly better overall transfer and communication skills than LFS group (89.70±4.65 vs 77.19±3.6, Conclusion In situ simulation training using HFS significantly showed better performance than the standard training using LFS in regards to overall transfer and communication skills as well as teamwork performance. The training using HFS may provide a valuable adjunct to improve interprofessional skills, communication and teamwork performance in transferring critically ill patients with COVID-19. Many interprofessional education programs are being designed to help students improve their collaborative practice. Traditionally, the evaluation of these programs is focused on attitudes, knowledge and skills, but according to some authors, the evaluation of these activities should be expanded to include the evaluation of the development of an interprofessional identity. The Interprofessional Socialization and Valuing Scale (ISVS) is a self-report tool used to measure interprofessional socialization, but it has not been validated with Spanish students. In this study, the tool was translated into Spanish and administered to a sample of 645 undergraduate students. The data were analyzed to estimate structural validity, internal consistency and convergent validity. Regarding the structural validity, our data supported the unidimensional model found in the English version of the ISVS-21 (normed chi-square = 2.3, RMSEA = 0.045, SRMR = 0.087, CFI = 0.963 and TLI = 0.969). The internal consistency reliability of the scale was adequate, Cronbach α = 0.913 [95% CI 0.903, 0.923]. The Spanish version of the ISVS-21 shows adequate psychometric properties in terms of the construct validity (structural validity and convergent validity) and internal consistency of its scores. This study provides the Spanish-speaking population with an adaptation of the only instrument that has been specifically developed to assess interprofessional socialization. Studies have shown the impact of interprofessional education (IPE) on health professions students' knowledge, skills, and attitudes and, to some extent, its impact on patient and organizational outcomes. This retrospective quasi-experimental study explored the impact of home visits by teams of interprofessional health professions students on the readmission rates of patients recently discharged from the hospital. Patients (20 in the intervention group, 20 in the control group) were in the care of one home health agency during a 7-month period. The patient groups were similar in terms of gender (55% male, 45% female) and age (mean about 73). The model implemented in this study, referred to as hotspotting, is designed to improve patient outcomes, decrease readmissions, and decrease costs. Twelve student participants included two pharmacy, three public health, three occupational therapy, three nursing, and one medical student. Student teams performed 32 total visits. The COVID-19 pandemic required rapid adaptation of multidisciplinary tumor board conferences to a virtual setting; however, there are little data describing the benefits and challenges of using such a platform.An anonymous quality improvement survey was sent to participants of tumor board meetings at a large academic institution. Participants answered questions pertaining to the relative strengths and weaknesses of in-person and virtual settings.A total of 335 responses (23.3% response rate) were recorded, and 253 met inclusion criteria. Respondents represented 25 different tumor board meetings, with colorectal, breast, and liver (18.6%, 17.0%, and 13.0%, respectively) being the most commonly attended. Virtual tumor boards were equivalent to in-person across 9 of 10 domains queried, while a virtual format was preferred for participation in off-site tumor boards. The lack of networking opportunities was ranked by physicians to be a significant challenge of the virtual format. Consistent leadership and organization, engaged participation of all attendees, and upgrading technology infrastructure were considered critical for success of virtual meetings.The implementation of virtual tumor board meetings has been associated with numerous challenges. However, improving several key aspects can improve participant satisfaction and ensure excellent patient care.

A medication plan (MP) provides an overview of a patient's entire medication. In the interprofessional medication management program ARMIN (ARzneiMittelINitiative Sachsen-Thueringen), MPs are jointly generated by general practitioners (GPs) and community pharmacists (CPs). We aimed to assess patients' initial acceptance of the service, how they use the printed MP, and whether they perceived a benefit from it. This was evaluated with mixed-methods: a cross sectional written (quantitative) survey followed by semi-structured (qualitative) interviews. The data were analysed separately and compared. Qualitative data were analysed by thematic analysis. For the survey, 103 patients (mean 73 years) were involved. Benefits indicated were: improved communication between GPs and CPs, safer handling of the medication, and increased knowledge on dosages and indications. Ninety-six percent of the patients used their MP, 51% regularly. Regular use was significantly associated with older age, higher number of drugs, and need for assistance with the medication. Ten patients were interviewed. Results from interviews agreed with the results from the survey but revealed some additional aspects (e.g., patients reported an increased feeling of safety). Health-care professionals should consider providing MPs for their patients. This interprofessional cooperation also meets patient's need for safety in health issues.
