[ES] Los neutrinos de alta energía son partículas esquivas: no tienen carga, tienen una sección transversal de interacción muy pequeña con la materia ordinaria y su masa es extremadamente pequeña. Los neutrinos son una sonda importante en el estudio del origen de los rayos cósmicos, y también, siguiendo algunos modelos de la física más allá del modelo Stardard, pueden producirse a partir de la propagación de partículas del modelo estándar producidas por la aniquilación de la materia oscura. En el último siglo, se han desarrollado muchos enfoques nuevos en la física de astropartículas, tratando de resolver los enigmas no resueltos del Universo, como el origen de los rayos cósmicos y la existencia de la materia oscura. Entre los diferentes experimentos destacan, sin duda, los telescopios de neutrinos. Los telescopios de neutrinos, consistentes en un gran volumen de un medio transparente monitorizado por sensores ópticos para detectar luz de Cherenkov, pueden detectar neutrinos de alta energía de fuentes galácticas o extragalácticas, y también pueden usarse para el estudio de las propiedades de los neutrinos. ANTARES y su sucesor KM3NeT son dos telescopios de neutrinos ubicados en el mar Mediterráneo. El telescopio ANTARES empezó a estar operativo en 2007 y ha tomado datos de forma casi continua hasta principios de 2022. KM3NeT, aprovechando la experiencia de ANTARES, pretende ser el telescopio de neutrinos más sensible de la próxima generación de detectores. Esta tesis presenta mis contribuciones en ambos detectores. En concreto, la parte técnica del trabajo se ha desarrollado en colaboración con KM3NeT. Está dedicado al estudio de los datos de los sensores de orientación instalados en los módulos de detección ópticos de KM3NeT: desde su calibración antes del despliegue en el mar hasta el análisis de sus datos in situ. Estos sensores permiten una monitorización de los movimientos de los elementos detectores en el mar. Por otro lado, en colaboración con ANTARES se ha desarrollado un análisis de física relacionado con la búsqueda de la aniquilación de la materia oscura en el Sol analizando trece años de datos. Se han obtenido nuevos límites superiores para los flujos de neutrinos y antineutrinos a partir de la aniquilación de materia oscura en el Sol, y a partir de estos, se han derivado límites superiores a la sección eficaz de dispersión de Materia Oscura - Nucleón. Neutrinos are an important probe in the study of the origin of cosmic rays but also, following some models of physics Beyond the Standard Model, they can be produced from the decay of Standard Model particles produced by dark matter annihilation. In the last century, many new approaches have been developed in astroparticle physics, trying to solve the unsolved puzzles of the Universe such as the origin of Cosmic Rays and the existence of Dark Matter. Among the many experiments, neutrino telescopes certainly stand out. Neutrinos telescopes, made of large volume of a transparent medium observed by optical sensors, can detect high energy neutrinos from galactic or extra-galactic sources, and they can also be used for the study of neutrino properties. ANTARES and its successor KM3NeT are two neutrino telescopes located in the Mediterranean sea. ANTARES operations started in 2007 and it has taken data almost continuously until the beginning of 2022. KM3NeT, taking advantage from the experience of ANTARES, aims to be the most sensitive neutrino telescope in the next generation of detectors. This thesis presents my contributions to both detectors. In particular, the technical part of the work has been developed in collaboration with KM3NeT. It is devoted to the the study of data from the compasses installed in the KM3NeT detection elements: from their calibration before deployment to the analysis of their data in the sea. These compasses allow a tracking of the movements of the detector elements in the sea. In collaboration with ANTARES a physics analysis related to the search of dark matter annihilation in the Sun has been developed analyzing thirteen years of data. New upper limits for neutrino and antineutrino fluxes from dark matter annihilation in the Sun have been obtained, and from these upper limits on the Dark Matter - Nucleon scattering cross section have been obtained. These results improve previous ANTARES results by a factor of 2 and are competitive with those obtained by other experiments.

In medical image classification tasks, it is common to find that the number of normal samples far exceeds the number of abnormal samples. In such class-imbalanced situations, reliable training of deep neural networks continues to be a major challenge, therefore biasing the predicted class probabilities toward the majority class. Calibration has been proposed to alleviate some of these effects. However, there is insufficient analysis explaining whether and when calibrating a model would be beneficial. In this study, we perform a systematic analysis of the effect of model calibration on its performance on two medical image modalities, namely, chest X-rays and fundus images, using various deep learning classifier backbones. For this, we study the following variations: (i) the degree of imbalances in the dataset used for training; (ii) calibration methods; and (iii) two classification thresholds, namely, default threshold of 0.5, and optimal threshold from precision-recall (PR) curves. Our results indicate that at the default classification threshold of 0.5, the performance achieved through calibration is significantly superior (p < 0.05) to using uncalibrated probabilities. However, at the PR-guided threshold, these gains are not significantly different (p > 0.05). This observation holds for both image modalities and at varying degrees of imbalance. A systematic review was conducted to identify the range of terminology used in studies to describe maximum walking distance and the exercise testing protocols, and testing modalities used to measure it in patients with intermittent claudication. A secondary aim was to assess the implementation and reporting of the exercise testing protocols. CINAHL, Medline, EMBASE and Cochrane CENTRAL databases were searched. Randomised controlled trials whereby patients with intermittent claudication were randomised to an exercise intervention were included. The terminology used to describe maximal walking distance was recorded, as was the modality and protocol used to measure it. The implementation and reporting quality was also assessed using pre-specified criteria. Sixty-four trials were included in this review. Maximal walking distance was reported using fourteen different terminologies. Twenty-two different treadmill protocols and three different corridor tests were employed to assess maximal walking distance. No single trial satisfied all the implementation and reporting criteria for an exercise testing protocol. Evidence shows that between-study interpretation is difficult given the heterogenous nature of the exercise testing protocols, test endpoints and terminology used to describe maximal walking distance. This is further compounded by poor test reporting and implementation across studies. Comprehensive guidelines need to be provided to enable a standardised approach to exercise testing in patients with intermittent claudication.

A system to differentiate and quantify liquid and headspace vapor leaks from closed system drug-transfer devices (CSTDs) is presented. CSTDs are designed to reduce or eliminate hazardous drug (HD) exposure risk when compounding and administering HDs. CSTDs may leak liquid, headspace, or a mixture of the two. The amount of HD contained in liquid and headspace leaks may be substantially different. Use of a test solution containing two VOCs with differences in ratios of VOC concentrations in the headspace and liquid enables source apportionment of leaked material. SIFT-MS was used to detect VOCs from liquid and headspace leaks in the vapor phase. Included in this report is a novel method to determine the origin and magnitude of leaks from CSTDs. A limit of leak detection of 24 μL of headspace vapor and 0.14 μL of test liquid were found using Selected Ion Flow Tube Mass Spectrometry (SIFT-MS).

Risk models have historically displayed only moderate predictive performance in estimating mortality risk in left ventricular assist device therapy. This study evaluated whether machine learning can improve risk prediction for left ventricular assist devices. Primary durable left ventricular assist devices reported in the Interagency Registry for Mechanically Assisted Circulatory Support between March 1, 2006 and December 31, 2016 were included. The study cohort was randomly divided 3:1 into training and testing sets. Logistic regression and machine learning models (extreme gradient boosting) were created in the training set for 90-day and 1-year mortality and their performance was evaluated after bootstrapping with 1000 replications in the testing set. Differences in model performance were also evaluated in cases of concordance versus discordance in predicted risk between logistic regression and extreme gradient boosting as defined by equal size patient tertiles. A total of 16,120 patients were included. Calibration metrics were comparable between logistic regression and extreme gradient boosting. Commercially available low-cost particulate matter (PM) sensors provide output as total or size-specific particle counts and mass concentrations. These quantities are not measured directly but are estimated by the original equipment manufacturers' (OEM) proprietary algorithms and have inherent limitations since particle scattering depends on their composition, size, shape, and complex index of refraction (CRI). Hence, there is a need to characterize and calibrate their performance under a controlled environment. We present calibration algorithms for Plantower PMS A003 sensor as a function of particle size and concentration. A standardized experimental protocol was used to control the PM level, environmental conditions and to evaluate sensor-to-sensor reproducibility. The calibration was based on tests when PMS A003 were exposed to different polydisperse standardized testing aerosols. The results suggested particle size distribution from PMS A003 was shifted compared to reference instrument measures. For calibration of number concentration, linear model without adjusting aerosol properties corrects the raw PMS A003 measurement for specific size bins with normalized mean absolute error within 4.0% of the reference instrument. Although the Bayesian Information Criterion suggests that models adjusting for particle optical properties and relative humidity are technically superior, they should be used with caution as the particle properties used in fitting were within a narrow range for challenge aerosols. The calibration models adjusted for particle CRI and density account for non-linearity in the OEM's mass concentrations estimates and demonstrated lower error. These results have significant implications for using PMS A003 in high concentration environments, including indoor air quality and occupational/industrial exposure assessments, wildfire smoke, or near-source monitoring scenarios.

Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) experiments like Advanced ACTPol (AdvACT) and Simons Observatory (SO) seek to uncover the physics of the early Universe, just ~10^-32 seconds after its formation, and its evolution since. With just 6 parameters, the Lambda-CDM model of cosmology describes our Universe exceptionally well, but leaves some questions unanswered. The CMB can answer questions left unanswered by Lambda-CDM, including whether the early Universe underwent a period of inflation, if there are particles beyond the Standard Model, the sum of the neutrino masses, and the nature of dark matter and dark energy. However, reaching the level of precision necessary to measure the signals in the CMB that can answer these questions is extremely difficult and requires unprecedented sensitivity, which presents a number of instrumental challenges. Additionally, measurements can be contaminated by polarized foregrounds such as dust and synchrotron emission. To recover the CMB signal, we must characterize and remove these polarized foregrounds with high precision, which requires multiple frequency bands and highly stringent instrument calibration. Previous experiments have never needed to calibrate to such extreme levels, but future experiments seeking to improve CMB measurements will require sub-percent level uncertainties in detector bandpass characterization. This will necessitate new calibration techniques. In this thesis, I present my work towards achieving this unprecedented level of precision in detector bandpass calibration for AdvACT, SO, and future experiments such as CMB-S4, through analyzing current measurements and using novel techniques to improve Fourier transform spectrometer (FTS) bandpass calibration, including characterizing the FTS transfer function, design improvements, and improved coupling optics. I will discuss the viability of these methods for future CMB experiments. This work will improve the frequency calibration needed to remove polarized foregrounds from CMB maps, which will enable CMB measurements that will advance our understanding of the fundamental physics of the Universe.

Objective Evaluate the accuracy and precision of the copd-6 mini-spirometer for FEV1 in a rural Ugandan population. Methods In a cross-sectional study, 171 smallholder farmers performed spirometry with copd-6, and a diagnostic-quality spirometer. Results and discussion The copd-6 underestimated FEV1 at low flows and overestimated FEV1 at high flows. Across all participants, the device slightly overestimated FEV1 by 0.04 [0.02; 0.06] L. Calibration data showed similar patterns. Conclusion The copd-6 could be considered as an affordable tool for research on lung function impairment in resource-constrained settings. With COVID-19 N95 shortages, frontline medical personnel are forced to reuse this disposable–but sophisticated–multilayer respirator. Widely used to decontaminate nonporous surfaces, UV-C light has demonstrated germicidal efficacy on porous, non-planar N95 respirators when all surfaces receive ≥1.0 J/cm2 dose. Of utmost importance across disciplines, translation of empirical evidence to implementation relies upon UV-C measurements frequently confounded by radiometer complexities. To enable rigorous on-respirator measurements, we introduce a photochromic indicator dose quantification technique for: (1) UV-C treatment design and (2) in-process UV-C dose validation. While addressing outstanding indicator limitations of qualitative readout and insufficient dynamic range, our methodology establishes that color-changing dosimetry can achieve the necessary accuracy (>90%), uncertainty (95%) required for UV-C dose measurements. In a measurement infeasible with radiometers, we observe a striking ~20× dose variation over N95s within one decontamination system. Furthermore, we adapt consumer electronics for accessible quantitative readout and use optical attenuators to extend indicator dynamic range >10× to quantify doses relevant for N95 decontamination. By transforming photochromic indicators into quantitative dosimeters, we illuminate critical considerations for both photochromic indicators themselves and UV-C decontamination processes.

Ovaj rad može se podijeliti na pet osnovnih cjelina u kojima je prikazano: 1. Što je kružnost i zašto se mjeri odstupanje od kružnosti; 2. Način ispitivanja kružnosti; 3. Etaloni za umjeravanje uređaja za mjerenje kružnosti; 4. Najčešće korištene metode za umjeravanje uređaja za mjerenje kružnosti i popis znanstvenih radova; 5. Prijedlog novog načina umjeravanja ticala uređaja za mjerenje kružnosti. U prvom dijelu definirani su pojmovi kružnost i odstupanje od kružnosti te je objašnjeno zašto je bitno mjerenje odstupanja od kružnosti. Navedeni su neki od karakterističnih oblika odstupanja od kružnosti te utjecaj odstupanja od kružnosti na funkcionalnost predmeta. U drugom dijelu opisani su tipovi uređaja za mjerenje kružnosti i numeričke metode koje se koriste za računanje odstupanja od kružnosti. Također je prikazan postupak ispitivanja kružnosti u Laboratoriju za precizna mjerenja dužina Fakulteta strojarstva i brodogradnje (LFSB). Treći dio odnosi se na uspostavljanje lanca sljedivosti. Također, prikazani su najčešće korišteni etaloni za umjeravanje uređaja za mjerenje kružnosti. U četvrtom dijelu opisane su najčešće korištene metode umjeravanja uređaja za mjerenje kružnosti te popis znanstvenih radova povezanih s tom temom koji se mogu koristiti za daljnja istraživanja. U posljednjem dijelu opisan je dosadašnji način statičkog umjeravanja uređaja za mjerenje kružnosti u LFSB te je predložen novi dinamički način umjeravanja uređaja. This paper can be divided into five main parts in which the following numbers are explained: 1. What is roundness and why it is important to measure out of roundness; 2. Procedure of out of roundness measurement; 3. Standards used for roundness measuring instrument calibration; 4. Most commonly used methods of roundness measuring instrument calibration and a list of scientific papers; 5. Proposal of a new stylus calibration method of roundness measuring instrument. In the first part, the term roundness is defined. Also, the importance of out of roundness measurement is explained. Several typical forms of roundness errors are listed, as well as the influence of roundness on the functionality of an object. In the second part, two types of roundness measuring instruments and numerical methods that are used for roundness determination are explained. Also, the procedure for roundness measurement in the Laboratory for Precise Measurement of Length (LFSB) of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture is demonstrated, step by step. The third part refers to the establishment of a traceability chain. Also, the most common standards used for calibration of the roundness measuring instrument are illustrated. The fourth part describes the most commonly used methods of calibration of roundness measuring instruments and a list of scientific papers related to this topic that can be used for further research. In the last part, the current method of static calibration of the roundness measuring instrument in the LFSB is described, and a new dynamic method of instrument calibration is proposed.

Ultrasonic testing is a useful approach for quantifying the flaws in mechanical components. The height of the flaws in ultrasonic angle beam testing is closely related to the calibration value of the probe refraction angle. In order to reduce the calibration error, some ignored data during the traditional calibration process are reanalyzed and fused to determine the refraction angle. Both arithmetical measurement fusion method and weighted measurement fusion method are applied and compared. Monte Carlo simulation is used to estimate the probability distribution of the refraction angle and obtain the optimal refraction angle weights. Experiments were carried out to verify the results of Monte Carlo simulation. The applicability of data fusion on refraction angles is investigated. It was found in the study that the data fused with the refraction angle is helpful for measuring the height of flaws.

The time-dependent properties of rubber-like synthesized and biological materials are crucial for their applications. Currently, this behavior is mainly measured using axial tensile test, compression test, or indentation. Limited studies performed on using multi-axial loading measurements of time-dependent material behavior exist in the literature. Therefore, the aim of this study is to investigate the viscoelastic response of rubber-like materials under multi-axial loading using cavity expansion and relaxation tests. The tests were performed on PVA hydrogel specimens. Three hyperelasitc models and one term Prony series were used to characterize the viscoelastic response of the hydrogels. Finite element (FE) simulations were performed to verify the validity of the calibrated material coefficients by reproducing the experimental results. The excellent agreement between the experimental, analytical and numerical data proves the capability of the cavity expansion technique to measure the time-dependent behavior of viscoelastic materials.

Single-molecule force spectroscopy (SMFS) instruments (e.g., magnetic and optical tweezers) often use video tracking to measure the three-dimensional position of micron-scale beads under an applied force. The force in these experiments is calibrated by comparing the bead trajectory to a thermal motion-based model with the drag coefficient, γ, and trap spring constant, κ, as parameters. Estimating accurate parameters is complicated by systematic biases from spectral distortions, the camera exposure time, parasitic noise, and least-squares fitting methods. However, while robust calibration methods exist that correct for these biases, they are not always used because they can be complex to implement computationally. To address this barrier, we present Tweezepy: a Python package for calibrating forces in SMFS video-tracking experiments. Tweezepy uses maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) to estimate parameters and their uncertainties from a single bead trajectory via the power spectral density (PSD) and Allan variance (AV). It is well-documented, fast, easy to use, and accounts for most common sources of biases in SMFS video-tracking experiments. Here, we provide a comprehensive overview of Tweezepy’s calibration scheme, including a review of the theory underlying thermal motion-based parameter estimates, a discussion of the PSD, AV, and MLE, and an explanation of their implementation.

Meaningful information on the internal state of a battery can be derived by measuring its impedance. Accordingly, battery management systems based on electrochemical impedance spectroscopy are now recognized as a feasible solutions for online battery control and diagnostic. Since the impedance of a battery is always changing along with its state of charge and aging effects, it is important to have a stable impedance reference in order to calibrate and test a battery management system. In this work we propose a programmable impedance emulator that in principle could be used for the calibration of any battery management system based on electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. A digital finite-impulse-response filter is implemented, whose frequency response is programmed so as to reproduce exactly the impedance of a real battery in the frequency domain. The whole design process of the filter is presented in detail. An analytical expression for the impedance of real battery in the frequency domain is derived from an equivalent circuit model. The model is validated both through numerical simulations and experimental tests. In particular, the filter is implemented on a low-cost microcontroller unit, and the emulated impedance is measured by means of a custom-made electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measuring system, and verified by using standard commercial bench instruments. Results on this prototype show the feasibility of using the proposed emulator as a fully controllable and low-cost reference for calibrating battery impedance measurement systems.

Portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) and Diffuse Reflectance Fourier Transformed Mid-Infrared (DRIFT-MIR) spectroscopy are rapid and cost-effective analytical tools for material characterization. Here, we provide an assessment of these methods for the analysis of total Carbon, Nitrogen and total elemental composition of multiple elements in organic amendments. We developed machine learning methods to rapidly quantify the concentrations of macro- and micronutrient elements present in the samples and propose a novel system for the quality assessment of organic amendments. Two types of machine learning methods, forest regression and extreme gradient boosting, were used with data from both pXRF and DRIFT-MIR spectroscopy. Cross-validation trials were run to evaluate generalizability of models produced on each instrument. Both methods demonstrated similar broad capabilities in estimating nutrients using machine learning, with pXRF being suitable for nutrients and contaminants. The results make portable spectrometry in combination with machine learning a scalable solution to provide comprehensive nutrient analysis for organic amendments.

El Centro Regional de Calibración Brewer para Europa (RBCC-E) en colaboración con el Área de Instrumentación e Investigación Atmosférica del Instituto Nacional de Técnica Aeroespacial (INTA), con el apoyo del programa de Vigilancia de la Atmósfera Global (VAG) de la Organización Meteorológica Mundial (OMM) y la acción COST EUBREWNET ES1207 organizaron la 12.ª campaña europea de intercomparación. En esta campaña, el RBCC-E transfirió al resto de instrumentos participantes su propia calibración absoluta de aparatos de medición de ozono obtenida mediante el método Langley en el Observatorio de Izaña. En la intercomparación participaron un total de 20 espectrofotómetros Brewer de nueve países. Estas campañas de intercomparación, que cuentan con una gran cantidad de instrumentos participantes, ofrecen una visión general del estado actual de las mediciones de ozono realizadas por la red Brewer europea. Los instrumentos se compararon con la referencia del RBCC-E, el Brewer#185, para la medición de ozono y con el patrón de referencia europeo de la unidad QASUME del Centro Radiométrico Mundial (CRM) para la medición de radiación UV.

This work describes the correction method applied to the dataset acquired at the asteroid (4) Vesta by the visible channel of the visible and infrared mapping spectrometer. The rising detector temperature during data acquisitions in the visible wavelengths leads to a spectral slope increase over the whole spectral range. This limits the accuracy of the studies of the Vesta surface in this wavelength range. Electrodermal activity (EDA) is an electrical property of the human skin, correlated with person’s psychological arousal. Nowadays, different types of EDA measuring devices are used in highly versatile fields–from research, health-care and education to entertainment industry. But despite their universal use the quality of their measuring function (their accuracy) is questioned or investigated very seldom. In this paper, we propose a concept of an EDA patient simulator—a device enabling metrological testing of EDA devices by means of a variable resistance. EDA simulator was designed based on a programmable light-controlled resistor with a wide resistance range, capable of simulating skin conductance levels (SCL) and responses (SCR) and was equipped with an artificial hand. The hand included electrically conductive fingers for attachment of EDA device electrodes. A minimal set of tests for evaluating an EDA device was identified, the simulator’s functionality discussed and some testing results presented.

Dynamic changes in flavonoid, total phenol, and antioxidant potential in different Prunus humilis accessions during fruit development stages were studied in order to provide a reference for the optimum harvest time for flavonoid extraction. ‘Nongda 4’, ‘Nongda 5’, ‘DS-1’ and ‘02–16’ were selected as plant materials to determine the content of flavonoid, total phenol and antioxidant indices during six fruit development stages. Changes in total flavonoid content (TFC) and total phenol content (TPC) in different accessions of P. humilis were slightly different depending on the development stage of P. humilis fruit. TFC and TPC in ‘Nongda 5’ fruit showed a trend of continuous decline. There was a small increase in TFC and TPC from the young fruit stage to the stone hardening stage, followed by a decreasing trend, and then to the lowest level at the ripening stage of ‘Nongda 4’, ‘DS-1’, and ‘02–16’ fruits. The trend of antioxidant capacity (ABTS, FRAP, DPPH) with the TFC and TPC of P. humilis fruit was basically the same, and the correlation analysis results showed that the TFC of P. humilis fruit was positively correlated with the antioxidant indices (PP. humilis fruits. Among them, catechin was the most abundant component, accounting for approximately 10%. Myricetin (MC) and quercetin (QC) were generally detected only in the early fruit development stage, but not in the later fruit development stage. Correlation analysis showed that the flavonoid components with TFC, TPC, and antioxidant indices differed between the different accessions. RT, CC, and liquiritigenin (LR) had a stronger correlation with TFC and antioxidant indices. Cyanidin-3-O-glucoside (C3G) was not detected until the coloring stage in two red P. humilis accessions (‘Nongda 4’ and ‘DS-1’), and so it is better to choose a red P. humilis fruit to extract C3G at the ripening stage. Selecting an early stage of fruit development, especially the stone hardening stage, was important for extracting flavonoids, total phenols and other components. We believe that our results will provide basic information and reference for evaluation of fruit nutrition and health benefits, breeding of functional new varieties, and efficient utilization of P. humilis fruit.

Background Preoperative risk prediction is important for guiding clinical decision-making and resource allocation. Clinicians frequently rely solely on their own clinical judgement for risk prediction rather than objective measures. We aimed to compare the accuracy of freely available objective surgical risk tools with subjective clinical assessment in predicting 30-day mortality. Methods and findings We conducted a prospective observational study in 274 hospitals in the United Kingdom (UK), Australia, and New Zealand. For 1 week in 2017, prospective risk, surgical, and outcome data were collected on all adults aged 18 years and over undergoing surgery requiring at least a 1-night stay in hospital. Recruitment bias was avoided through an ethical waiver to patient consent; a mixture of rural, urban, district, and university hospitals participated. We compared subjective assessment with 3 previously published, open-access objective risk tools for predicting 30-day mortality: the Portsmouth-Physiology and Operative Severity Score for the enUmeration of Mortality (P-POSSUM), Surgical Risk Scale (SRS), and Surgical Outcome Risk Tool (SORT). We then developed a logistic regression model combining subjective assessment and the best objective tool and compared its performance to each constituent method alone. We included 22,631 patients in the study: 52.8% were female, median age was 62 years (interquartile range [IQR] 46 to 73 years), median postoperative length of stay was 3 days (IQR 1 to 6), and inpatient 30-day mortality was 1.4%. Clinicians used subjective assessment alone in 88.7% of cases. All methods overpredicted risk, but visual inspection of plots showed the SORT to have the best calibration. The SORT demonstrated the best discrimination of the objective tools (SORT Area Under Receiver Operating Characteristic curve [AUROC] = 0.90, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.88–0.92; P-POSSUM = 0.89, 95% CI 0.88–0.91; SRS = 0.85, 95% CI 0.82–0.87). Subjective assessment demonstrated good discrimination (AUROC = 0.89, 95% CI: 0.86–0.91) that was not different from the SORT (p = 0.309). Combining subjective assessment and the SORT improved discrimination (bootstrap optimism-corrected AUROC = 0.92, 95% CI: 0.90–0.94) and demonstrated continuous Net Reclassification Improvement (NRI = 0.13, 95% CI: 0.06–0.20, p < 0.001) compared with subjective assessment alone. Decision-curve analysis (DCA) confirmed the superiority of the SORT over other previously published models, and the SORT–clinical judgement model again performed best overall. Our study is limited by the low mortality rate, by the lack of blinding in the ‘subjective’ risk assessments, and because we only compared the performance of clinical risk scores as opposed to other prediction tools such as exercise testing or frailty assessment. Conclusions In this study, we observed that the combination of subjective assessment with a parsimonious risk model improved perioperative risk estimation. Over 3 million postoperative deaths occur worldwide per year. Some of these may be avoidable through risk-assessment–based modification of treatment pathways, such as postoperative critical care admission. There are multiple methods for predicting which patients are at high risk of death or complications from surgery, but these are not widely used, with clinicians instead usually relying on their subjective clinical judgement alone. Before this study, there was little information about whether clinical judgement was of better, worse, or equivalent accuracy to objective risk scores. What did the researchers do and find? We conducted a 1-week cohort study in 274 hospitals in the UK, Australia, and New Zealand, during which we collected data on risk and surgical outcome on every patient who had an operation requiring an overnight stay in hospital. The clinical team (surgeons, anaesthetists) looking after the patient were asked to provide a subjective assessment of risk. We compared these assessments with the results of 3 freely available objective risk-assessment tools. We included data from 22,631 patients in our analyses and found that subjective assessment was as accurate as the best of the objective risk tools (the Surgical Outcome Risk Tool or SORT) for predicting death in hospital within 30 days of surgery. However, combining subjective and objective measurement using the SORT provided an even more accurate estimate. What do these findings mean? The new SORT–clinical judgement calculator can be used by clinicians to risk-stratify patients and so identify which individuals are most likely to benefit from limited resources such as access to postoperative critical care. At the policy level, the tool can be used to plan surgical services, including the number of critical care beds required to serve a surgical population. This study is limited by being conducted solely in high-income countries, limiting its global generalisability.

Alongside the campaign, the ATMOZ (Traceability of Atmospheric Total Ozone) project workshop took place at the station. In addition, this event was also used as a demonstration exercise of the calibration methodologies and error assessment developed by the project (Gröbner et al., 2018).

Mobile, vehicle-installed road weather sensors are becoming ubiquitous. While mobile sensors are often capable of making observations on a high frequency, their reliability and accuracy may vary. Large-scale road weather observation and forecasting are still mostly based on stationary road weather stations (RWS). Though expensive, sparsely located and making observations on a relatively low frequency, RWS’ reliability and accuracy are well-known and accommodated for in the road weather forecasting models. Statistical analysis revealed that road weather conditions indeed have a great effect on how the observations of mobile and stationary road weather temperature sensors differ from each other. Consequently, we calibrated the observations of mobile sensors with a linear mixed model. The mixed model was fitted fusing ca. 20 000 pairs of mobile and RWS observations of the same location at the same time, following a rendezvous model of sensor calibration. The calibration nearly halved the MSE between the observations of the mobile and the RWS sensor types. Computationally very light, the calibration can be embedded directly in the sensors. In this campaign, the Regional Brewer Calibration Center for Europe (RBCC-E) transferred its own absolute ozone calibration obtained from the Langley method at the Izaña Observatory to all other participating instruments. Such intercomparison campaigns, with a large number of participating instruments, provide an overview of the current state of ozone measurements being made by the European Brewer network. The instruments were compared with the RBCC-E standard Brewer#185 for ozone and with the European reference standard from the World Radiation Center (WRC) QASUME unit for UV.

PurposeIn this paper we compared two different 3D ultrasound (US) modes (3D free-hand mode and 3D wobbler mode) to see which is more suitable to perform the 3D-US/3D-US registration for clinical guidance applications. The typical errors with respect to their impact on the final localization error were evaluated step by step.MethodsMulti-point target and Hand-eye calibration methods were used for 3D US calibration together with a newly designed multi-cone phantom. Pointer based and image based methods were used for 2D US calibration. The calibration target error was computed by using a different multi-cone phantom. An egg-shaped phantom was used as ground truth to compare distortions for both 3D modes along with the measurements of the volume. Finally, we compared 3D ultrasound images acquired by 3D wobbler mode and 3D free-hand mode with respect to their 3D-US/3D-US registration accuracy using both, phantom and patient data. A theoretical step by step error analysis was performed and compared to empirical data.ResultsTarget registration errors based on the calibration with the 3D Multi-point and 2D pointer/image method have been found to be comparable (∼1mm). They both outperformed the 3D Hand-eye method (error >2mm). Volume measurements with the 3D free-hand mode were closest to the ground truth (around 6% error compared to 9% with the 3D wobbler mode). Additional scans on phantoms showed a 3D-US/3D-US registration error below 1 mm for both, the 3D free-hand mode and the 3D wobbler mode, respectively. Results with patient data showed greater error with the 3D free-hand mode (6.50mm - 13.37mm) than with the 3D wobbler mode (2.99 ± 1.54 mm). All the measured errors were found to be in accordance to their theoretical upper bounds.ConclusionWhile both 3D volume methods showed comparable results with respect to 3D-US/3D-US registration for phantom images, for patient data registrations the 3D wobbler mode is superior to the 3D free-hand mode. The effect of all error sources could be estimated by theoretical derivations.

Safety and efficiency of human-AI collaboration often depend on how humans could appropriately calibrate their trust towards the AI agents. Over-trusting the autonomous system sometimes causes serious safety issues. Although many studies focused on the importance of system transparency in keeping proper trust calibration, the research in detecting and mitigating improper trust calibration remains very limited. To fill these research gaps, we propose a method of adaptive trust calibration that consists of a framework for detecting the inappropriate calibration status by monitoring the user's reliance behavior and cognitive cues called "trust calibration cues" to prompt the user to reinitiate trust calibration. We evaluated our framework and four types of trust calibration cues in an online experiment using a drone simulator. A total of 116 participants performed pothole inspection tasks by using the drone's automatic inspection, the reliability of which could fluctuate depending upon the weather conditions. The participants needed to decide whether to rely on automatic inspection or to do the inspection manually. The results showed that adaptively presenting simple cues could significantly promote trust calibration during over-trust.

Multi-stage/level sampling designs have been widely used by survey statisticians as a means of obtaining reliable and efficient estimates at a reasonable implementation cost. This method has been particularly useful in National country-wide surveys to assess the costs of delivering public health programs, which are generally originated in different levels of service management and delivery. Unbiased and efficient estimates of costs are essential to adequately allocate resources and inform policy and planning. In recent years, the global health community has become increasingly interested in estimating the costs of immunization programs. In such programs, part of the cost correspond to vaccines and it is in most countries procured at the central level, while the rest of the costs are incurred in states, municipalities and health facilities, respectively. As such, total program cost is a result of adding these costs, and its variance should account for the relation between the totals at the different levels. An additional challenge is the missing information at the various levels. A variety of methods have been developed to compensate for this missing data. Weighting adjustments are often used to make the estimates consistent with readily-available information. For estimation of total program costs this implies adjusting the estimates at each level to comply with the characteristics of the country. In 2014, A National study to estimate the costs of the Brazilian National Immunization Program was initiated, requested by the Ministry of Health and with the support of international partners. We formulate a quick and useful way to compute the variance and deal with missing values at the various levels. Our approach involves calibrating the weights at each level using additional readily-available information such as the total number of doses administered. Taking the Brazilian immunization costing study as an example, this approach results in substantial gains in both efficiency and precision of the cost estimate.

with Igem Interlab Study Contributors; Fluorescent reporters are commonly used to quantify activities or properties of both natural and engineered cells. Fluorescence is still typically reported only in arbitrary or normalized units, however, rather than in units defined using an independent calibrant, which is problematic for scientific reproducibility and even more so when it comes to effective engineering. In this paper, we report an interlaboratory study showing that simple, low-cost unit calibration protocols can remedy this situation, producing comparable units and dramatic improvements in precision over both arbitrary and normalized units. Participants at 92 institutions around the world measured fluorescence from E. coli transformed with three engineered test plasmids, plus positive and negative controls, using simple, low-cost unit calibration protocols designed for use with a plate reader and/or flow cytometer. In addition to providing comparable units, use of an independent calibrant allows quantitative use of positive and negative controls to identify likely instances of protocol failure. The use of independent calibrants thus allows order of magnitude improvements in precision, narrowing the 95% confidence interval of measurements in our study up to 600-fold compared to normalized units.

Object It is increasingly popular to collect as much data as possible in the hospital setting from clinical monitors for research purposes. However, in this setup the data calibration issue is often not discussed and, rather, implicitly assumed, while the clinical monitors might not be designed for the data analysis purpose. We hypothesize that this calibration issue for a secondary analysis may become an important source of artifacts in patient monitor data. We test an off-the-shelf integrated photoplethysmography (PPG) and electrocardiogram (ECG) monitoring device for its ability to yield a reliable pulse transit time (PTT) signal. Approach This is a retrospective clinical study using two databases: one containing 35 subjects who underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy, another containing 22 subjects who underwent spontaneous breathing test in the intensive care unit. All data sets include recordings of PPG and ECG using a commonly deployed patient monitor. We calculated the PTT signal offline. Main results We report a novel constant oscillatory pattern in the PTT signal and identify this pattern as a sawtooth artifact. We apply an approach based on the de-shape method to visualize, quantify and validate this sawtooth artifact. Significance The PPG and ECG signals not designed for the PTT evaluation may contain unwanted artifacts. The PTT signal should be calibrated before analysis to avoid erroneous interpretation of its physiological meaning.

We present a robust method for testing and calibrating the performance of oscillometric non-invasive blood pressure (NIBP) monitors, using an industry standard NIBP simulator to determine the characteristic ratios used, and to explore differences between different devices. Assuming that classical auscultatory sphygmomanometry provides the best approximation to intra-arterial pressure, the results obtained from oscillometric measurements for a range of characteristic ratios are compared against a modified auscultatory method to determine an optimum characteristic ratio, Rs for systolic blood pressure (SBP), which was found to be 0.565. We demonstrate that whilst three Chinese manufactured NIBP monitors we tested used the conventional maximum amplitude algorithm (MAA) with characteristic ratios Rs = 0.4624±0.0303 (Mean±SD) and Rd = 0.6275±0.0222, another three devices manufactured in Germany and Japan either do not implement this standard protocol or used different characteristic ratios. Using a reference database of 304 records from 102 patients, containing both the Korotkoff sounds and the oscillometric waveforms, we showed that none of the devices tested used the optimal value of 0.565 for the characteristic ratio Rs, and as a result, three of the devices tested would underestimate systolic pressure by an average of 4.8mmHg, and three would overestimate the systolic pressure by an average of 6.2 mmHg.

The use of cavity ring-down spectrometer (CRDS) based portable greenhouse gas analyzers (PGAs) in closed-loop configuration to measure small sample volumes (< 1 l) for CH4 and CO2 concentrations is increasing and offers certain advantages over conventional measurement methods in terms of speed as well as the ability to measure directly in field locations. This first systematic assessment of the uncertainties, problems and issues associated with achieving reliable and repeatable measurement with this technique presents the adaptation, measurement range, calibration and maintenance, accuracy and issues of efficient operation, for one example instrument. Regular open-loop calibration, a precise loop volume estimate, leak free system, and a high standard of injection practices are necessary for accurate results. For 100 μl injections, measured values ranging from 4.5 to 9 x104 ppm (CH4), and 1000 ppm to 1 x106 ppm (CO2) are possible with uncertainties ±5.9% and ±3.0%, respectively, beyond 100 ppm CH4 correction may be necessary. Uncertainty arising from variations water vapour content and atmospheric pressure are small (0.24% and -0.9% to +0.5%, respectively). With good practice, individual operator repeatability of 1.9% (CH4) and 2.48% (CO2) can be achieved. Between operator injection error was around 3% for both gases for four operators. Slow syringe plunger operation (> 1s) is recommended; generally delivered more (ca. 3–4%) sample into the closed instrument loop than did rapid operation. Automated value retrieval is recommended; we achieved a 3 to 5-fold time reduction for each injection cycle (ca.

Background Given the dramatic rise in the prevalence of obesity, greater focus on prevention is necessary. We sought to develop and validate a population risk tool for obesity to inform prevention efforts. Methods We developed the Obesity Population Risk Tool (OPoRT) using the longitudinal National Population Health Survey and sex-specific Generalized Estimating Equations to predict the 10-year risk of obesity among adults 18 and older. The model was validated using a bootstrap approach accounting for the survey design. Model performance was measured by the Brier statistic, discrimination was measured by the C-statistic, and calibration was assessed using the Hosmer-Lemeshow Goodness of Fit Chi Square (HL χ2). Results Predictive factors included baseline body mass index, age, time and their interactions, smoking status, living arrangements, education, alcohol consumption, physical activity, and ethnicity. This study aimed to determine the intra- and inter-device accuracy and reliability of wearable athletic tracking devices, under controlled laboratory conditions. A total of nineteen portable accelerometers (Catapult OptimEye S5) were mounted to an aluminum bracket, bolted directly to an Unholtz Dickie 20K electrodynamic shaker table, and subjected to a series of oscillations in each of three orthogonal directions (front-back, side to side, and up-down), at four levels of peak acceleration (0.1g, 0.5g, 1.0g, and 3.0g), each repeated five times resulting in a total of 60 tests per unit, for a total of 1140 records. Data from each accelerometer was recorded at a sampling frequency of 100Hz. Peak accelerations recorded by the devices, Catapult PlayerLoad™, and calculated player load (using Catapult's Cartesian formula) were used for the analysis. The devices demonstrated excellent intradevice reliability and mixed interdevice reliability. Differences were found between devices for mean peak accelerations and PlayerLoad™ for each direction and level of acceleration. Interdevice effect sizes ranged from a mean of 0.54 (95% CI: 0.34-0.74) (small) to 1.20 (95% CI: 1.08-1.30) (large) and ICCs ranged from 0.77 (95% CI: 0.62-0.89) (very large) to 1.0 (95% CI: 0.99-1.0) (nearly perfect) depending upon the magnitude and direction of the applied motion. When compared to the player load determined using the Cartesian formula, the Catapult reported PlayerLoad™ was consistently lower by approximately 15%. These results emphasize the need for industry wide standards in reporting validity, reliability and the magnitude of measurement errors. It is recommended that device reliability and accuracy are periodically quantified.

Analytical ultracentrifugation (AUC) is a first-principles based method for studying macromolecules and particles in solution by monitoring the evolution of their radial concentration distribution as a function of time in the presence of a high centrifugal field. In sedimentation velocity experiments, hydrodynamic properties relating to size, shape, density, and solvation of particles can be measured, at a high hydrodynamic resolution, on polydisperse samples. In a recent multilaboratory benchmark study including data from commercial analytical ultracentrifuges in 67 laboratories, the calibration accuracy of the radial dimension was found to be one of the dominant factors limiting the accuracy of AUC. In the present work, we develop an artifact consisting of an accurately calibrated reflective pattern lithographically deposited onto an AUC window. It serves as a reticle when scanned in AUC control experiments for absolute calibration of radial magnification. After analysis of the pitch between landmarks in scans using different optical systems, we estimate that the residual uncertainty in radial magnification after external calibration with the radial scale artifact is ≈0.2 %, of similar magnitude to other important contributions after external calibration such as the uncertainty in temperature and time. The previous multilaboratory study had found many instruments with errors in radial measurements of 1 % to 2 %, and a few instruments with errors in excess of 15 %, meaning that the use of the artifact developed here could reduce errors by 5-to 10-fold or more. Adoption of external radial calibration is thus an important factor for assuring accuracy in studies related to molecular hydrodynamics and particle size measurements by AUC.

BACKGROUND: Vital sign measurements in hospitalized patients by nurses are time consuming and prone to operational errors. The Checkme, a smart all-in-one device capable of measuring vital signs, could improve daily patient monitoring by reducing measurement time, inter-observer variability, and incorrect inputs in the Electronic Health Record (EHR). We evaluated the accuracy of self measurements by patient using the Checkme in comparison with gold standard and nurse measurements. METHODS AND FINDINGS: This prospective comparative study was conducted at the Internal Medicine ward of an academic hospital in the Netherlands. Fifty non-critically ill patients were enrolled in the study. Time-related measurement sessions were conducted on consecutive patients in a randomized order: vital sign measurement in duplicate by a well-trained investigator (gold standard), a Checkme measurement by the patient, and a routine vital sign measurement by a nurse. In 41 patients (82%), initial calibration of the Checkme was successful and results were eligible for analysis. In total, 69 sessions were conducted for these 41 patients. The temperature results recorded by the patient with the Checkme differed significantly from the gold standard core temperature measurements (mean difference 0.1 +/- 0.3). Obtained differences in vital signs and calculated Modified Early Warning Score (MEWS) were small and were in range with predefined accepted discrepancies. CONCLUSIONS: Patient-calculated MEWS using the Checkme, nurse measurements, and gold standard measurements all correlated well, and the small differences observed between modalities would not have affected clinical decision making. Using the Checkme, patients in a general medical ward setting are able to measure their own vital signs easily and accurately by themselves. This could be time saving for nurses and prevent errors due to manually entering data in the EHR.

Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems (ENDS) offer an alternate means to consume nicotine in a variety of flavored aerosols. Data are needed to better understand the impact of flavors on use behavior. A natural environment observational study was conducted on experienced ENDS users to measure the effect of e-liquid flavor on topography and consumption behavior. The RIT wPUMTM monitor was used to record to record the date and time and puff topography (flow rate, volume, duration) for every puff taken by N = 34 participants over the course of two weeks. All participants used tobacco flavor for one week, and either berry or menthol flavor for one week. Results provide strong evidence that flavor affects the topography behaviors of mean puff flow rate and mean puff volume, and there is insufficient evidence to support an influence of flavor on mean puff duration and mean puff interval. There was insufficient evidence, due to the low power associated with the limited number of observation days, to establish a relationship between flavor and cumulative consumption behavior. While the results indicate that an effect may be evident, additional observation days are required to establish significance.

Non-invasive devices used to estimate central (aortic) systolic pressure (cSBP), pulse pressure (cPP) and forward (Pf) and backward (Pb) wave components from blood pressure (BP) or surrogate signals differ in arteries studied, techniques, data-analysis algorithms and/or calibration schemes (e.g. calibrating to calculated [MBPc] or measured [MBPosc] mean pressure). The aims were to analyze, in children, adolescents and young-adults (1) the agreement between cSBP, cPP, Pf and Pb obtained using carotid (CT) and radial tonometry (RT) and brachial-oscillometry (BOSC); and (2) explanatory factors for the differences between approaches-data and between MBPosc and MBPc.1685 subjects (mean/range age: 14/3-35 y.o.) assigned to three age-related groups (3-12; 12-18; 18-35 y.o.) were included. cSBP, cPP, Pf and Pb were assessed with BOSC (Mobil-O-Graph), CT and RT (SphygmoCor) records. Two calibration schemes were considered: MBPc and MBPosc for calibrations to similar BP levels. Correlation, Bland-Altman tests and multiple regression models were applied. Systematic and proportional errors were observed; errors´ statistical significance and values varied depending on the parameter analyzed, methods compared and group considered. The explanatory factors for the differences between data obtained from the different approaches varied depending on the methods compared. The highest cSBP and cPP were obtained from CT; the lowest from RT. Independently of the technique, parameter or age-group, higher values were obtained calibrating to MBPosc. Age, sex, heart rate, diastolic BP, body weight or height were explanatory factors for the differences in cSBP, cPP, Pf or Pb. Brachial BP levels were explanatory factors for the differences between MBPosc and MBPc.

A complete method for calibrating a two-dimensional flat-panel detector for use in X-ray diffraction is described. The method provides both the beam energy and the sample-to-detector distance. The geometry for the intersection of a cone’s axis and its elliptical conic section is also presented., A complete calibration method to characterize a static planar two-dimensional detector for use in X-ray diffraction at an arbitrary wavelength is described. This method is based upon geometry describing the point of intersection between a cone’s axis and its elliptical conic section. This point of intersection is neither the ellipse centre nor one of the ellipse focal points, but some other point which lies in between. The presented solution is closed form, algebraic and non-iterative in its application, and gives values for the X-ray beam energy, the sample-to-detector distance, the location of the beam centre on the detector surface and the detector tilt relative to the incident beam. Previous techniques have tended to require prior knowledge of either the X-ray beam energy or the sample-to-detector distance, whilst other techniques have been iterative. The new calibration procedure is performed by collecting diffraction data, in the form of diffraction rings from a powder standard, at known displacements of the detector along the beam path.

Wearable physical activity monitors are growing in popularity and provide the opportunity for large numbers of the public to self-monitor physical activity behaviours. The latest generation of these devices feature multiple sensors, ostensibly similar or even superior to advanced research instruments. However, little is known about the accuracy of their energy expenditure estimates. Here, we assessed their performance against criterion measurements in both controlled laboratory conditions (simulated activities of daily living and structured exercise) and over a 24 hour period in free-living conditions. Thirty men (n = 15) and women (n = 15) wore three multi-sensor consumer monitors (Microsoft Band, Apple Watch and Fitbit Charge HR), an accelerometry-only device as a comparison (Jawbone UP24) and validated research-grade multi-sensor devices (BodyMedia Core and individually calibrated Actiheart™). During discrete laboratory activities when compared against indirect calorimetry, the Apple Watch performed similarly to criterion measures. The Fitbit Charge HR was less consistent at measurement of discrete activities, but produced similar free-living estimates to the Apple Watch. Seat comfort is one of the main factors that consumers consider when purchasing a car. In this study, we develop a dummy with a shear-force sensor to evaluate seat comfort. The sensor has dimensions of 25 mm × 25 mm × 26 mm and is made of S45C. Electroless nickel plating is employed to coat its surface in order to prevent corrosion and oxidation. AimsManaging bladder pressure in patients with neurogenic bladders is needed to improve rehabilitation options, avoid upper tract damage, incontinence, and their associated co-morbidities and mortality. Current methods of determining bladder contractions are not amenable to chronic or ambulatory settings. In this study we evaluated detection of bladder contractions using a novel piezoelectric catheter-free pressure sensor placed in a suburothelial bladder location in animals.MethodsWired prototypes of the pressure monitor were implanted into 2 nonsurvival (feline and canine) and one 13-day survival (canine) animal. Vesical pressures were obtained from the device in both suburothelial and intraluminal locations and simultaneously from a pressure sensing catheter in the bladder. Intravesical pressure was monitored in the survival animal over 10 days from the suburothelial location and necropsy was performed to assess migration and erosion.ResultsIn the nonsurvival animals, the average correlation between device and reference catheter data was high during both electrically stimulated bladder contractions and manual compressions (r = 0.93±0.03, r = 0.89±0.03). Measured pressures correlated strongly (r = 0.98±0.02) when the device was placed in the bladder lumen. The survival animal initially recorded physiologic data, but later this deteriorated. However, endstage intraluminal device recordings correlated (r = 0.85±0.13) with the pressure catheter. Significant erosion of the implant through the detrusor was found.ConclusionsThis study confirms correlation between suburothelial pressure readings and intravesical bladder pressures. Due to device erosion during ambulatory studies, a wireless implant is recommended for clinical rehabilitation applications.

Background Portable direct-reading instruments by light-scattering method are increasingly used in airborne fine particulate matter (PM2.5) monitoring. However, there are limited calibration studies on such instruments by applying the gravimetric method as reference method in field tests. Methods An 8-month sampling was performed and 96 pairs of PM2.5 data by both the gravimetric method and the simultaneous light-scattering real-time monitoring (QT-50) were obtained from July, 2015 to February, 2016 in Shanghai. Temperature and relative humidity (RH) were recorded. Mann-Whitney U nonparametric test and Spearman correlation were used to investigate the differences between the two measurements. Multiple linear regression (MLR) model was applied to set up the calibration model for the light-scattering device. Results The average PM2.5 concentration (median) was 48.1μg/m3 (min-max 10.4–95.8μg/m3) by the gravimetric method and 58.1μg/m3 (19.2–315.9μg/m3) by the light-scattering method, respectively. We present the in-flight scalar calibration and characterisation of the Swarm magnetometry package consisting of the absolute scalar magnetometer, the vector magnetometer, and the spacecraft structure supporting the instruments. A significant improvement in the scalar residuals between the pairs of magnetometers is demonstrated, confirming the high performance of these instruments. The results presented here, including the characterisation of a Sun-driven disturbance field, form the basis of the correction of the magnetic vector measurements from Swarm which is applied to the Swarm Level 1b magnetic data.

SMOS is the acronym for the Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity mission by the European Space Agency (ESA) [1]. Its single payload, the Microwave Imaging Radiometer using Aperture Synthesis (MIRAS), was successfully launched in November 2009. Along more than six years of operation, SMOS calibration and imaging algorithms have undergone a continuous evolution to further improve the accuracy of the retrieved geophysical parameters for a variety of scientific applications related with soil moisture and ocean salinity [2]. This paper analyzes a simplified iterative image reconstruction method that exclusively takes into account the dominant terms in the full-polarimetric equation [3]. This simplified method, that reduces computation time up to 50% at the cost of small radiometric performance degradation, is useful to the L1 teams to fine tune the calibration of the instrument when processing a large amount of data is required.

Advanced air quality control requires real-time monitoring of particulate matter size and concentration, which can only be done using optical instruments. However, such techniques need regular calibration with reference samples. In this study, we suggest that puffball fungus (Lycoperdon pyriforme) spores can be utilized as a reference standard having a monodisperse size distribution. We compare the Lycoperdon pyriforme spores with the other commonly used reference samples, such as Al2O3 powder and polystyrene latex (PSL) microspheres. Here we demonstrate that the puffball spores do not coagulate and, thus, maintain the same particle size in the aerosol state for at least 15 minutes, which is enough for instrument calibration. Moreover, the puffball mushrooms can be stored for several years and no agglomeration of the spores occurs. They are also much cheaper than other calibration samples and no additional devices are needed for aerosol generation since the fungal fruiting body acts as an atomizer itself. The aforementioned features make the fungal spores a highly promising substance for calibration and validation of particle size analyzers, which outperforms the existing, artificially produced particles for aerosol sampling. Furthermore, the L. pyriforme spores are convenient for basic research and development of new optical measurement techniques, taking into account their uniform particle size and absent coagulation in the aerosol.

Hypothetical bias is a persistent problem in stated preference studies. We propose and test a method for reducing hypothetical bias based on the cognitive dissonance literature in social psychology. A central element of this literature is that people prefer not to take inconsistent stands and will change their attitudes and behaviour to make them consistent. We find that participants in a stated preference willingness-to-pay study, when told that a nonhypothetical study of similar goods would follow, state significantly lower willingness to pay (WTP) than participants not so informed. In other words, participants adjust their stated WTP to avoid cognitive dissonance, that is, taking inconsistent stands on their WTP for the good being offered. Introduction Wound surface area measurement is important as therapeutic decisions may depend on the change of wound surface area over time. Digital planimetry is a popular technique in wound area measurement. It is accurate and repeatable when calibration is performed with 2 rulers placed at opposite sides of a wound. The aim of the current study was improving accuracy and precision of wound area measurement using capabilities of smart devices. Methods The correction of area measurement based on calculated camera tilt angle and the calculation of calibration coefficient of linear dimensions as weighted average were proposed. These and other improvements were applied in the Planimator app for Android, which was then used in the study. Accuracy and precision of the Planimator app were compared to the Visitrak device, the SilhouetteMobile device, the AreaMe software, and to the digital planimetry based on 2-ruler calibration with pictures taken by the smartphone, compact, and D-SLR cameras. Areas of 40 wound shapes of area ranged from 0.14 to 31.72 cm2 were measured with each device. Medians of relative errors (REs) were compared in the accuracy tests and standard deviations (SDs) of relative differences (RDs) were compared in the tests of precision. Results The median of REs for the Planimator app was not significantly different from the medians of REs for the digital planimetry based on pictures from the compact or D-SLR cameras, but it was significantly lower than the medians of REs for the Visitrak and SilhouetteMobile devices, the AreaMe software and the digital planimetry based on pictures from a smartphone camera. The SD of RDs for the Planimator app was not significantly different from the SDs of RDs for the digital planimetry based on pictures from the compact or D-SLR cameras, but it was significantly lower than the SDs of RDs for the Visitrak and SilhouetteMobile devices, the AreaMe software and the digital planimetry based on pictures from a smartphone camera. The Planimator app installed at a smartphone revealed to be 2-fold more accurate and 1.5-fold more precise than the measurements with using ImageJ software based on pictures taken with the same smartphone. Conclusions The Planimator app occurred to have the same accuracy and precision as measurements with digital planimetry with 2-ruler calibration and based on pictures from a compact camera or a D-SLR camera. This app showed better accuracy and precision than the Visitrak and SilhouetteMobile devices, the AreaMe software and the digital planimetry based on pictures from a smartphone camera.

Advances in light shaping techniques are leading to new tools for optical trapping and micromanipulation. For example, optical tweezers made from Laguerre-Gaussian or donut beams display an increased axial trap strength and can impart angular momentum to rotate a specimen. However, the application of donut beam optical tweezers to precision, biophysical measurements remains limited due to a lack of methods for calibrating such devices sufficiently. For instance, one notable complication, not present when trapping with a Gaussian beam, is that the polarization of the trap light can significantly affect the tweezers' strength as well as the location of the trap. In this article, we show how to precisely calibrate the axial trap strength as a function of height above the coverslip surface while accounting for focal shifts in the trap position arising from radiation pressure, mismatches in the index of refraction, and polarization induced intensity variations. This provides a foundation for implementing a donut beam optical tweezers capable of applying precise axial forces.

For future exploration of the solar system, the European Space Agency (ESA) is planning missions to Mercury (BepiColombo), the Sun (SolarOrbiter) and to the moons of Jupiter and Saturn. The expected intensity of radiation during such missions is hazardous for the scientific instruments and the satellite. To extend the lifetime of the satellite and its payload a multifunctional particle spectrometer (MPS) is being developed. The basic function of the MPS is to send an alarm signal to the satellite control system during periods of high radiation. In addition the MPS is a scientific instrument that will unfold the composition of the different contributing particles on-line by the dE/dx versus E method. The energy spectrum and angular distribution of the particles will be recorded as well. This article describes the main requirements and the base line design for the MPS. A readout scheme consisting of a 32 channel ASIC from IDEAS is proposed and the signal filtering algorithm will run on a digital signal processor based on FPGA technology.
